take this lady she's wonderful!
She's a great teacher. Her class is easy if you pay attention and come to class. Tests are easy. And she gives out extra credit. I would recommend her to anyone.
by not being an art major i found the class to be a tad boring and seemed to drag sometimes. i didnt like how she made fun of students for mispronouncing words and such
Very knowledgeable. The class is fun if you have even a slight interest in art through history. Good teacher in general.
easy class but very boring, she spits when she speaks so don't sit in the front row
Tends to give quizzes and tests on material not covered. My class was three hours and she keeps you for every minute of it. She believes that most people know art? There is probably an easier art history prof.
always lets us out of nite class like a half hour to an hour early. lets us use cheat sheets for tests and no real other assignments
Nice lady who makes art history alot more interesting than it actually is. Very few out of class assignments, and allows the use of a full page of nots on exams. Also assigns alot of extra credit.
She's a very good teacher who you can tell really knows what she is talking about. She always lets her night class out early and lets us use notes on exams. If you have any interest in art history, this class will be a breeze.
She makes the subject of art history more interesting than it actually is. Exams are not that difficult, and there are very few out of class assignments. If you go to class and give it a little effort, you will walk away with an A.
Great educator. Attendance policy though.
shes a great professor.. and makes art history interesting. always lets her 1.5 hour class out a half hour early
undeniably strong, could throw a bologna sandwich through a brick wall. if youre capable of getting beyond the super foxy nature of this bionic feline you will succeed.
no worries with this class, quizzes are very elementary and full page front & back cheatsheet for exams.
she's boring.
Shes a huge twit! I can not stand listening to her talk. She gave our class 8 out of class assignments when the sylabus only said there would be 3. tests arent too hard, but you better be prepared to sit thru the whole class bcs you arnt getng out early
I think she is a very boring teacher but it's not too bad considering you get a 8 /12 x 11 cheet sheet for all exams and usually lets classes out 20-30 minutes early
worst teacher ever
Super easy class but kind of boring, the quizzes are really easy and you are allowed to bring a full page of notes to the tests, she is a weirdo about assigned seats but the class is extremely easy as long as you pay attention, she always lets us out earl
Good class. Shows photos of art on screen while teaching. Quizes are easy, (she tell's you what to study for). You are allowed a cheat sheet for the exams. Go to class, pay attention, you'll do well.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!! BORING AND LOVES TO MAKE WORK BORING AND NOT FUN!!! THE THREE HOUR CLASS WAS HELL!
She made the class fun..but you walk out thinking you knew all the answers to the exam, and you go into class finding out you only got 70% right. Weird...but overall its a blow off class if you attend
really big on attendance and her stupid seating chart.. overall its a blow off class... but you will fail if you never show up!
Awful teacher. When I asked her for help, she told me that she didn't have time...I thought that was her job!! She is extremely boring, and like the others said, she is a maniac with her seating chart. However, I would -NOT- recommend her.
she is a character and she is nuts about her seating chart. overall if you attend each class you shouldnt fail unless u are really dumb
Remember, she's always right, you are always wrong
She's easy if u go to class...cheat sheets allowed and tells you the whole quiz before hand. But she is crazy..assigned seats and shes rude...if you make a peep in class, she flips
Extremely easy class, she lets you use a cheat sheet for exams. The class itself is boring, i always fell asleep. Also make sure your phone is off, if it rings she'll kick you out. Sometimes when she talks she gets out of breath, which is kind of funny.
kinda boring, but some material is actually interesting, quizzes are easy, and you can use a cheat sheet for tests, she breaths really hard, and is anal about her seating chart..but for the most part, an easy class if you look over your notes and you have to go to class b/c she takes attendence.
She's kind of strange, but her lectures are not that bad since she uses power point. You are allowed to use a cheat sheet on tests, and the quizzes are easy as long as you can identify the photos learned in class. Not the most interesting subject though, try to avoid this class if you can! BORING!
horrible class, very boring get to use cheat sheet on test but it doesn't help you at all since you don't even go over half the material on the tests avoid at all costs
DONT TAKE HER CLASS!
This class is very easy and you should have no problem gettind an A. If you attend class and study what on the syllabus your good to go. Plus she lets you us cheat sheets on all the exams! If you fail this class you need some serious help.
Cold auditorium and watch slides the entire class. SOO boring.
She's rather strict and requires you to sit in the same seat, but I don't think that's neccesarily a bad thing. The classes (usually in Sprowls Auditorium) are large so she has no tolerance for gabbers and cel-kiddies unless you want to see her temper. Really gave me an interest in the subject! :)
She acts too superior to students and she was rude to me numerous times when i was just asking a question. Easy class, but she makes it very boring and drags it out for you...plus she is rude. So, lets just say the bad outweighs the good.
No tolerance for stupid people, but she's very detailed about the artwork and explains things if you listen. V. easy to get a good grade if you pay attention and do the work. A hot temper though, will chew people out who gab all the time or try to use celphones in her class. More or less worth it
This is NOT a film class even though it says it is. Once you get in there it's just another Japanese Art History course and sometimes you watch films. The movies also get wrecked because you have to write papers about them that she edits like a hawk. When you answer in class she looks at you funny.
The class was pretty boring, and you can't skip or sleep because she takes attendance in an auditorium class, seriously. But, for all the big tests you get to use a study sheet while taking the test, you can write anything you want on it. So if you fail a test, it's probably your fault. She's not the nicest, but the class wasnt' too hard.
God awful. Says it's an art/film class, but spends 90% of the class talking about religion. Assigns WAY too much reading that is boring and unhelpful. Papers are dumb and pulled apart. Says you will have choice in films we watch, but this is untrue. If you don't like Anime, she will annoy you. Her tests are pretty hard too.
make sure you dont bring any sharp objects to her class. Not only because its illegal, but youll want to stab yourself in the pupil.
probaly one of the most boring classes ever...i would contemplate running full speed into a barbed wire fence before i take her as a professor again
She is definately a nut ball... but was nice and made the subject interesting bc she has a passion for it... you really have to work for your grade in this class and the readings were challenging... id take another class with her tho
I hate this class. She's boring and it's just a lame class.
Do your self a favor and never take this class. Penny is passionate about what she does but the class is boring to the point you want to kill yourself. Penny sucks and cant teach for****.
Her Intro to Asian art class is amazing and I admire her professionalism.
Not as bad as students make her out to seem. She's a good professor with a strong interest in what she teaches. Tests are a bit hard but if you make a study guide and study what she tells you too you'll do just fine.
She definitley makes the 101 class well above 100 level, so be prepared to take tedious notes and attend every class if you take her and try not to fall asleep even though you'll want to if you aren't an art major. She's very passionate about it and will try and help you but her tests are so detailed and complicated that several people walked out.
Very passionate about class, but the class is awful...don't take it!
i had penny for asain art history. i had no prior to asain studies and i found the class really hard. however, penny was more the willing to help me with studying and what not and i think the class ended on a good note. there was no text, we had to print off information that we found which made it difficult so make sure to have lots of ink!!

Easy class just take notes and youll pass the test. she is nice and loves what she teaches. it can be interesting
Very well organized PowerPoint class in an auditorium environment. Very good diction and volume for an auditorium class. LOTS of visual aids, unlike some art classes I have had in the past. The book is fairly important since she will sometimes give short quizes on the material. Overall, a great professor.
I absolutly loved this class. She's fantastic and gives you interesting and useful information. She has powerpoints for every class and puts study guides online. Take this as your fine arts requirement!
goes at a boring pace but overall a cool class
Shes pretty nice, but can get a bit edgy if she feels that her students aren't taking the course seriously. She gives TONS AND TONS of extra credit so try to go to class if you can. I took her as a night class which actually made going to class easier. Overall, I liked her and would reccomend her for your fine arts requirement.
I loved her! She is a really good professor. She shows so much interest in her subject and she tries her hardest to make you understand everything. Make sure to take notes during class, she always gives bonus at the end of each class. Shes amazing!
she was awesome....gave a study guides, extra credit, and power points. she was very passionate about the subject and passed that on to the students....as long as you put some effort into studying for the exams...ur golden
Easy class, make sure you attend and do the homework. Quizzes are based off homework and given almost every class. She gives study guides towards the exam and everything on the study guide is on the test. She can be ****y at times, but overall she's very smart and helpful. Very easy class and interesting!
Relatively easy class. Tests are super easy if you look at the study guide.
She is an easy professor. Take notes and do the study guide and you will get A's on the exams and you will pass. Nothing really that negative to say about her, though she is a little wild at times like some others have said.
She is a really nice professor. She is helpful if you have a problem and her class and tests are extremely easy. The class is enjoyable because she has a passion for what she teaches.
Not going to lie, Penny Rode drove me insane this semester! Sure, her tests are easy to pass as long as you take enough time to finish the god awful study guides. They're usually pretty long and based entirely on class powerpoints. I had to struggle to stay awake while she lectured. All in all, I say take another prof for this class.
I have taken Penny Rode for just about every course she teaches. She is my favorite professor at IUP and I am not even an art history major. She is very helpful and loves what she teaches. To all the people who give her bad ratings you must not be doing anything because it is impossible to do bad if you do the work and keep up with the reading.
She does seem a bit jaded from having to teach students with no real interest in art but I never had a problem with her. The study guides are great. Overall, an easy class.
I really enjoyed her class! So long as you have a love for Asian and Indian artXD Try to stay awake in her class, take plenty of notes, study in advance and you will do just fine. That much is guaranteed!!
Study guides before exams. Remembering dates on works of art is very important on exams. Seems to always be out of breath. Very boring class, but not difficult. Lots of extra credit offered throughout semester. She wouldn't be my first choice, but I guess I would take her again.
Her tests were ridiculous. She expected you to know what paintings were made out of what material and exact dates. Studied way too much for tests and still only got a C. Plus she makes these weird and distracting breathing noises..I recommend finding a better professor.
She is an awesome professor. Really just attend every class and take good notes. She gives bonus point quizzes based on the notes and readings. Plus she will answer all your questions. I would recommended her!!!!
Very easy to get an A but you have to go to class and take good notes to do well on the assignments, study guides, and tests. She gives study guides and the tests come directly from them. Good teacher though, interesting class, and she knows what she is talking about.
Decent teacher, easy class. I had no interest in Art History before, but I did learn a lot in this class and some of it is intresting. Test are easy if you do the study guide.
Go to class and take notes, she gives open-note quizzes at the end of class based on her lectures. Tests are multiple choice and very easy, don't need to know exact dates for most things. If you have to take a makeup exam it is NOT multiple choice and is harder so try not to miss class on exam days. Gives extra credit quizzes on exam review days

Study guides were LONG and hard. Tests were mostly off the study guide so work hard on completing them, they help. She wouldn't answer questions if u couldn't find an answer in the study guide which sucked. Only got the B because xtra credit brought me up from a C. Would not be my first choice teacher to ever take again.
Penny Rode is the worst art teacher I have ever seen. She makes weird noises and it is next to impossible to stay up in her classes. Her study guides are very long and take forever to complete. I would not wish this professor on my worst enemy.
I found ARHI 101 with Dr. Rode to be a very interesting class. She gives you textbook readings over the weekend, but they're not too long. She has a bit of a stern personality, but if you do well and give her your attention she's a nice lady. Her study guides are a bit long, but they are extremely helpful on tests,
Professor rode is a tough but fair teacher. She will throw you out for being on your phone or talking at the wrong time. Her tests are fairly hard and require studying, but the class is very passable. This is a requirement for all students at Iup and I recommend taking her for it. I got a b with moderate effort.
Dr. Rode is very clear. Her classes are hard to fail. She assigns a lot of reading but only to ensure that you you can get all of the information required to pass the course. I would recommend her to anyone.
She really isn't bad at all. This class was my GPA booster! The only thing I didn't like is the readings she would post on D2L.. if you didn't see they were assigned, you got 0/3 points which happened to me a lot. Her tests are straightforward and easy especially if you study. She puts up a study guide online too. TAKE NOTES IN CLASS!!!
Took as an elective. Lectures are very long and pointless. Get ready to take a lot of notes, quizzes twice a class. Make sure to take notes during class, you will need them. Tests are done by powerpoints and are extremely hard, make sure you study a lot.
Dr. Rode is a great professor! In order to pass this class you must attend lectures in order to get the information to pass the exam. The book is somewhat helpful but the info on the exams mostly comes from the lectures. She is willing to help and wants you to pass the class. As long as you study using notecards you will get an A or B in the class!
Took her for ARHI101. I thought the class was really boring to be honest, but she told us what would be on the test and gave us study guides of the questions she would be asking us on it. If you pay attention it's an easy A.
I withdrawal this class Introduction of Art history . She will not give you any grade instead of the exams. Believe me if you could not do great in exams you will not pass her class as she said.
Due to a low grade last semester I am retaking this course. If I would have rated her before I probably would have given her a poor review but I have come to realize she is a great professor. Sure, her class can be extremely boring if you're not into the material but it's your fault if you fail. Take notes and do the study guide you're golden.
Literally all you have to do is show up and take notes. The lectures aren't bad at all and alot of the time she lets class out early. There are several quizzes through out the semester. She gives study guides before exams and the class after the exam is dedicated to 10 extra credit points. Super easy class if you just show up.
