I am an A student, I currently have a low B. Reviews and powerpoint exercises he does in class are nothing compared to the type of questions he puts on the test. Wish I just took CHM2045, it would probably be the same difficulty as this class. Good teacher, Very foreign/twisted test Q's, which is very frustrating when you know the material well.
Please do yourself a favor and dont take his Chem 1A class. Supposedly an easy chem but he makes it so much harder and so much more difficult with his unorganized powerpoints. When he lectures, hes just reading off of them. Exams are significantly more difficult than the examples he provide.
Reads right off the power points. Doesn't explain stuff really. Gives really easy examples in class but gives extremely hard questions on tests and quizzes.
Professor has an extremely thick accent so his is difficult to understand. The only grades you receive are test grades so if you get a bad grade it is hard to recover. Test questions are way more complex then examples given during class or the limited homework. He wants we to memorize a large amount of information.
DO NOT take this professor if you are an auditory learner. His accent makes anything super difficult to understand. When he gives lectures it is almost impossible to make out what he is saying. If you do not need to listen to learn, he is a good professor, but because chemistry is hard to learn visually, I do not recommend this professor at all.
Take this class with any other professor if you can. It is graded only on a little bit of tests and they are a lot harder than his lectures.
never take this professor, i promise you will suffer nearly the entire time. assignments are not posted on the calendar, they are only in modules. teacher has very thick accent that is hard to understand. THE TESTS ARE NOTHING LIKE THE ASSIGNMENTS. PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
Awful professor. Highly recommend not to take any of his classes. Very few assignments, only one zoom meeting a week to answer questions where he doesnt look at the comments. Extremely hard to understand in lectures and does not teach whatsoever
Not very willing to talk with students when they ask how to get grades up, at least not in my case
He was an awful professor and the course was very difficult bc of him
His homework and lectures were nothing like the test. Wouldnt read the comments in zooms to answer questions.
Despite flying through Chem I and II Honors in high school, I struggled with this class. Professor Marzal seems like a nice enough person but his teaching style is terrible. He moves super quickly and he doesn't go in-depth into concepts. The tests are super hard. Don't be afraid to take advantage of SARC. I regret waiting so long. RIP to my GPA.

Almost failed this class despite pouring in hours of work. Absolutely horrible and rude. Im surprised he hasnt been released from the university.
Literally the WORST experience of my life. The fact that I took this class in person and couldnt understand him and took it online due to COVID (thinking it would be easier), I was wrong. The class is messy, his notes are messy, everything is messy. I need this class for a requirement and this is the only professor available.
I dropped this class out of pure frustration the first week.. I know it is not his fault but I cannot understand a word he was saying. Messaged him a question about the discounted e book not working and he was not helpful. No organization.
Worst professor Ive ever taken, he teaches in a way where he can understand. Barely understand his English which is frustrating. Post no study guide for exams and exam questions do not reflect what is on the actual test. This professor is horrible.
Horrible HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. If I could give 0 I would. He does not teach, cant understand his accent and the exams are nothing like the notes. He will over talk you and doesnt teach. He explains things very fast and doesnt want to slow down to actually teach. Horrible horrible horrible.
Unfortunately a truly HORRIBLE professor! He has a VERY thick accent and it's extremely difficult to understand him. His class is only 6 quizzes and 4 tests, absolutely no classwork to help you better learn the material. I asked him once to slow down during a lecture and he flat out told me NO, I left the zoom after that because I wasn't learning.
AWFUL! He is a HORRIBLE professor whose sole purpose is to make you FAIL MISERABLY. He not give ANY homework, only grades in the class consist of 4 tests and 6 quizzes. The class meet days are scheduled Tues/Thurs however this man only holds class on Thurs. Even if your able to understand him thro his accent, he lacks the ability to actually teach
This teacher is truly awful. If you have no chemistry background, a class with this dude is likely gonna be rough because hes just so bad at teaching. Dont waste your time on his lectures, read the textbook or watch videos instead cause this dude cant teach. He also consistently has wrong answers on quizzes and tests and wont change them. Awful
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! Absolutely the worst semester of my life. It is impossible to learn due to his thick accent so you are forced to teach yourself. Tests are nothing like the lectures and questions are no where near the examples provided. Save yourself the frustration and find another professor.
Hard to understand him speaking in the lectures (heavy accent) The video quality is fine but the audio is so low that your volume could be at 100 and you cant hear it. Has only quizzes and tests. Won't provide answers for the review for the test as he said it was for us to do not him. The student averages for each test were 51-55.
The material is pretty hard stuff and he doesnt make it very easy to understand. There is no classwork or homework so if you do bad on the quizzes or exams, your grades dont have much hope. I wouldnt recommend if youre expecting to get a good chem grade.
This class is the first class I have ever failed in my life. This professor engaged so little with his students that it felt like I was learning the material from Khan Academy and other online tutoring services. His lectures contained no detail, and I could never understand a word he was saying. His office hours were just as awful. Worst semester.
Prof is knowledgeable but that knowledge is just for him. It is extremely difficult to understand him. Since this was an online class due to COVID, it was very easy to lose interest in the lecture videos when 95% of the time I could barely understand his words. Exam heavy (not similar to quizzes), no study guides, just lecture and exam, DON'T TAKE
Could not have had a worse experience in this class, I even asked my husband who has degrees in mathematics and physics for help. Even was confused by what the professor was saying due to his poor teaching ability. The only way to get extra credit was by having super fast internet and being one of his favorites (yes both conditions had to be met).
HOW DOES THIS GUY STILL HAVE A JOB! This is class is entry level chem, but this professor makes it the most difficult. He just reads off his powerpoints during classes. If I was giving a presentation the same way this guy teaches, I would get a failing grade! Why would I get a failing grade on a presentation grade while this guy still has a job!
The worst teacher I've had, his lectures are just him reading off poorly typed slides and not elaborating enough on any of the content. He only assigns tests and quizzes which are far more difficult than the final exam and he doesn't allow you to see the problems you missed either. If you want to pass, your only hope is to go to tutoring.
This class was very challenging, but l did not attend office hours and stopped attending online lecture a few weeks in because it was evident to me I wouldn't get anything out of it. Instead, I learned straight from the (amazing) textbook and did really well with the material! Use the textbook reading and practice and you're absolutely golden.
Worst prof. Ive ever had, half of his reviews for tests are wrong. To get points back for test answers (you probably got right but the answers were wrong) you have to wait in a Zoom wait room for 2 hours. Only grades on quizzes and tests, then the cumulative final. This will be my first college course Ive gotten a C in. Do NOT recommended.
Don't take this professor. I had to take him twice, and that's time i'll never get back in my life. WORST professor at UCF in my opinion. Grammar and spelling mistakes on his tests, quizzes, and lectures, is rude and refuses to work with you to find the correct answers. If you need a class and he's the only one, wait another semester.
Oh my god. If youre taking this professor you are making a mistake. Im almost done with the course and have been at an 89 the whole time. Our only grades are tests, quizzes, and ALEKS homework that doesnt even correlate. Ive stopped going to class because his lectures overcomplicate the simple material. Pray for my grade, every review is true.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This is the worst professor I will ever have. I read other reviews thinking I would just suck it up, but there is no way to succeed. Only quizzes and tests (cumulative final) with TONS of online hw. This man has no personality or empathy and just tells his students to memorize everything. Don't make the mistake I did.
Had to write a 2nd review bc I have so much to say. Just take Chem 1 instead of this. He makes so many errors on tests, quizzes, and reviews. So few students come to class that he provides extra points at the end of class just so there's an incentive. UCF you disappoint me. There are years of awful reviews and they're all true. I should've dropped.
super hard class, super hard test
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. IT IS NOT WORTH IT. PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF WHATEVER YOU BELIEVE IN DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. WORST ONE AT UCF.
Make sure to sit as close as possible.
The professor was pretty rude the times I tried to personally speak with him, VERY exam heavy with nothing to offset those grades. Would frequently include material not discussed on those exams Reads directly off slides and refuses to elaborate. Average/above average students WILL NOT pass this class, even with tutoring. Waste of a semester. :(
Does not give practice, when there is practice, he doesn't give the solutions. The powerpoint are read off of in class and is the same thing as textbook. No homework, lecture isn't mandatory. Test based and quizzes are online but not enough time is given to solve the problems. Hard to understand, isn't very helpful. Don't take.
Reading the reviews prior to selecting this professor made me anxious taking this class. I am not good at chemistry but I think the reviews are a little overdramatic on how hard this class really is. Coming from someone who doesn't attend lectures, it is very easy to pass if you study the slides and reviews that he posts.
Originally reading through the reviews before taking this Professor I thought student were being over dramatic or lazy, but this professor does not respect students. Even if you self teach and can perform the material, he does not give you enough time on the tests. He does not speak good English and can not answer questions you have.
This class wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be based on the reviews. Grade is 8 online quizzes, 4 exams, and a cumulative final. He isn't horrible, but I wish I took Chem 1 instead. Kind of boring and reads off the PowerPoints during lecture. However, he will sometimes give out extra credit during class that will go towards the tests.
worst class I've taken. Low quality lectures, hard to understand. Assignments ask for info unavailable in textbook & powerpoint slides, taking multiple attempts. Proctored Exams require camera. Completely self-taught myself. This is chem for non-sci majors, but friends believed it was harder than normal chem. He does responds quick though.
His accent makes it somewhat difficult to understand what he's saying during lectures but his powerpoints generally convey the information anyway and the quiz/exam questions are quite straightforward. Much of the semester grade comes from the exams so you cannot bomb those.
Attendance: Not for a grade, good to attend either way, he has a heavy accent. Assignments: 1 syllabus quiz, 9 Quizzes (two attempts), 4 tests (lowest is dropped), 1 final, and practices (infinite tries) to take before each quiz. Textbook: He provides a pdf and easy enough to find online (read and take notes), No Extra Credit
CHM1032, not 1020. Only lectures based off powerpoints. Thick accent, can not understand the vague material being taught. still uses lockdown browser. does not allow notes of any kind. Little to no help from the professor himself.
He is a really nice professor who does give you extra points towards your exam for participation and even just showing him your putting in the effort by asking questions. His exams are very heavy and this class is not easy so you do have to put in extra time to study for those exams. He even has a designated tutor for the course.
Had to take his class because of scheduling conflicts. Not the worst professor in the world, but not the best. If I had a choice, I would not choose his class because of boring lectures, not tech savvy. Reads off powerpoint slides.Though, he will explain questions in very simple and repetitive terms for beginning learners of chemistry.
Professor is very hard to understand and does not understand his students well. His Canvas quizzes require Lockdown Browser. Exams are in class and you have to bring your own scantrons. If you teach yourself how to do the math and do the optional practice quizzes, you'll perform fine in this class. Do not recommend this professor.
I took this professor back in Spring of 2023 and honestly, he was not a bad professor. My chem 1 teacher was way worse. Hard to understand but if you are good at teaching yourself than you should be fine. He gives some extra credit opportunities and if you study you should be fine on the tests. The SI instructors are also really helpful so use it!
CHM1032, not 1025. Professor is a heavy test/exam grader. His quizzes are required on the Lockdown Browser. He's not AS difficult to understand during his lectures how people make him seem to be, but he does have a heavy accent. Was surprised I was still able to pass his class. Personally, I don't recommend anyone taking his class.
It is very hard to understand him sometimes. He has a very heavy accent. His lectures are all through powerpoints and he post them all online. He gives about an average amount of homework. He gives online quizzes that require lockdown browser and webcam. All exams are in person.
His accent is so incredibly thick, I stopped attending classes and just taught myself. Also because of this, a lot of his online work has a LOT of typos. Tests always have at least one question regarding something that was never reviewed, so it's impossible to receive anything above an 80-90%. Even if he's your only option, don't.
Can barely understand what he says, if it were not for him posting the lectures I would have failed. I highly recommend trying your best on chem placement exam so you can skip this class.
Heavy accent and teaches in a monotone voice. His accent is understandable after the first class, but he only reads off the powerpoint. Assignments are consistent though, 10 question hw and 5 question quiz once a week. No exams dropped, 4 exams and 1 cumulative final. Use the SI tutors and watch youtube videos to pass!
Professor Percy is qualified in his field but is impossible to understand in lecture or at office hours. Mistakes are common in his PowerPoint slides and make you second guess what you learned from Materia and the textbook. Get ready to teach yourself every weekend! Extra credit is sometimes available in lecture through answering participation/WS.
Genuinely the worst professor I have had at UCF. So rude and not helpful. Doesn't care about whether or not his students succeed. Manages to make what should be a simple class difficult. Nothing really matters unless you do good on the exams and the final. He does drop a quiz and 2 homework's. Be ready to teach the class to yourself. Good. Luck.
he's a nice guy but very thick accent. the only reason i passed was because i read the textbook rather than his notes. be prepared to study a lot. very test heavy class, doesn't drop anything either but he did round my 89 to an A so that's something. exams are a mix of super easy to difficult questions.
I am not going to deny, the class is very complicated but the teacher does the presentations very well and if you go to class in some cases he says that specifically what we must learn, the exams are not so complicated if you understand the presentations along with the other assignments. .
He is very helpful if you have any questions about the material. But it is important to practice the material to learn it. He does a good job teaching the material in his lectures.
Chem1032. Lectures were boring, had trouble focusing. You really have to teach yourself the material. 50% of grade is tests and 25% final. Really dedicate your time to studying for this class and be disciplined. There is weekly online proctored quizzes. This class was hard for me, but manageable to pass. good luck lol
This class is so hard considering it's an intro class. Attendance isn't mandatory but sometimes he would give extra credit in lecture. He was hard to understand but nice at least. He makes you memorize more than any other chem teacher though. If you have to take this class, go to the SI/SARC sessions cause that's the only way you'll pass.
Do not take this class with this professor. Even if he's the only one available trust me, just wait. Your grade is 90% off of Tests. He teaches by reading off the power point. The only reason why I passed was because of the TA tutoring sessions.
Not sure why his ratings are so low, he's one of the better chem professors for sure. His exams were pretty straight forward and he doesn't try to trick you and he does extra credit before exams and bonus questions.overall I thought he was a good professor if you do bad in his class it's because you didn't put in enough effort.
Accent is very thick. If you are learning English or it is not your native language- good luck. However, I recommend no one take him. Boring lectures with no inspiration. He's a nice guy but lacks charisma to engage students. He gives a lot of practice for more difficult topics but never looks up from power point and all tests/quizzes are closed.
RUN!! the worst professor out there has no compassion towards his students. he DOES NOT care. he was the only professor available so i had to take his class and i truly regret it. he is the reason i am changing from an engineering major. i hated his class and he does not know how to teach all he does is read off of slides and his exams are hell.
"First off, this class shouldn't have been difficult—I'm usually very good at chemistry. In fact, I did better than most, consistently scoring in the top 25% on all tests and the final, and around average on the quizzes. Yet, I barely passed with a C. I believe the class has about a 30% pass rate. There are 4 tests, 12 quizzes, and 1 final exam.
Your grade is only based on exams and quizzes, which are difficult. He is incredibly hard to understand and moves through powerpoints FAST. I would not take this professor unless you absolutely have to.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I took him for CHM1032 TWICE and failed both times. He reads the PowerPoints word for word and does not extra explaining. He does not care about his students. The only things counted toward your grade are 5 test (1 gets dropped), 12 quizzes (2 get dropped) and a final. Take this class at Seminole state. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Absolutely awful professor. His lectures are insanely boring and he is very hard to understand. I had to teach myself all the material. Avoid at all costs
W professor if you study you will pass.
At first, it is intimidating because he has a thick accent, and if you are worried about chemistry, it can be scary. attend every lecture and take notes and study throughout the week, you can pass the class. I am not good at math or chem and I finished with a b; I just had to consistently study. He had 4 tests + final. He drops quizzes and a test
His class is honestly not that hard. He does read off the PowerPoint for lectures but he gives out extra credit test point if you answer questions in class. Test are 20 multiple choice questions and they are very straightforward. Put in effort to understand and you'll be fine
Avoid at all costs. Very test heavy, very poor quality lectures, and a very unforgiving professor. Wait a semester for Dixon to open up or take at Valencia, do not risk it.
Percy had moments where he demonstrated motivation to actually teach the class, however most of his classes consisted of reading a powerpoint. Most of his grading is on the 4 tests that you take, although one is dropped it doesn't change its 60% over grade percentage. You can do great in the quizzes and still end with a C-. Would not recommend.
CHS1440 is fairly easy content-wise, but Dr.Marzal "presents" information in an unorganized and convoluted way through reading powerpoints word-for-word way too quickly. There is little incentive to go to lectures other than random extra-credit for the tests. Most teaching is done by the TA in the discussion section, do not skip it.
Get ready to TRY to understand him… you'll have to teach yourself.
His strong accent can make him hard to understand, and his lectures mostly involve reading directly from the PowerPoints, which have occasional minor errors. There isn't much additional explanation beyond the slides, so it can be difficult to fully engage with the material. I'd recommend considering other professors.
This professor is not good at teaching imo. He is not only difficult to understand but poorly explains the content. his lectures and powerpoints are useless because they expect you to already understand the content. Marzal teaches his class like it is English 101 instead of chemistry. I wish UCF would offer a different professor for CHM1032
he's chill but boring and his accent is very strong
This class should also count as a language course. Not only will you be able understand 2 words of every sentence that comes out of his mouth, you will also have learn some hard concepts by urself. Pure English needs to be a requirment for every professor!
Would not recommend. He barely speaks english and has an awful, thick, accent. Unkind, inflexible—even with a doctor's note. Teaches very little; you teach yourself. Tests are 50% of your grade, final is 25%. Last test is 1 week before the final. We had a test two days after spring break ended, and two assignments that monday we came back.
Genuinely the worst professor i have ever had in my years of college. I took this class because i needed the credit for my degree and it genuinely made me rethink my major. Not only is it hard to understand him (not THAT big of a deal) it is also impossible to learn anything from his lectures. He literally copy and pastes from the textbook.
I took this class with this professor because it was the only one offered. I have made some terrible decisions in my life, but this was the worst one. You cannot understand what this guy is saying and will have to teach yourself everything. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN HELP IT! If you do bad on tests, prepare to fail. Not a lot of HW tho.
Honestly the professor its not that bad, I was really scared coming into this class because of these reviews. His accents is not that thick, I would say the key to getting a good grade ion this class is too stay on top of studying and to make sure that you are reviewing stuff. Was this the best professor I had, no, but this was my only option.
Percy is by far the worst professor I have ever been "taught" by. The in class lectures are ONLY reviewing slides that are posted online anyways so there is barely a point in even showing up. On top of that he has an extremely heavy accent that makes it hard to understand anything. CHS1440 should be an easy course, Percy makes it difficult.
PLEASE DONT PICK HIM! I took this class for a gep, it was AWFUL. his accent is so strong you cant understand anything. he just reads off a pp and goes through them too quickly. The slides are confusing to read them urself. tests are chill if you actually study, but you have to learn everything yourself. Also my final was a day after the last exam.
if you value ur sanity do not take this class. for one there were multiple instances where he would speak spanish and english during lectures. he reads off the pp which is verbatim the same thing as the textbook. he isn't helpful towards students and comes off extremely condescending. find another prof or take 2035 at valencia instead.
Pearson will be your best friend in this course, as I used it daily. You are graded mostly on four tests and a final. Homework will barely make a dent in your grade. Study early, and make sure you are constantly reviewing material. Use ChatGPT to help make practice tests and explain deeper topics. This class is doable, but it's low-key hard.
Don't take his class if you can help it. This was the only professor available for me, but I still regret taking his class. During lectures he just reads off a pp, and frequently throws in spanish words at random. He barely explains how to do any of the math. Grade in the class relies almost entirely on tests. I'm honestly still surprised I passed
Quizzes and homework are online but make up a small part of your grade. Your grade mostly depends on tests. The quizzes are lockdown with webcam. I ended with an A by attending all the lecture and copying down all the powers points since the tests were very similar to them. It's all self teaching though
Tests are straight forward with no trick questions and are essentially very similar to the his slides. You will likely have to teach yourself bc he blitzes through the PowerPoints. Tests make up most your grade but he does give extra credit. Take notes before class so the lectures are review it's how I passed without studying.
this class is graded by few things. you have 12 quizzes (honor locked) and homeworks, lowest 2 are dropped. 4 tests and lowest one is replaced by final if you score higher than on previous tests. he has a very thick accent and can be hard to understand, use Pearson, it's a lifesaver. you can get an A if you try hard enough and use your resources.
everyone is exaggerating. First of all his accent isn't even bad. His PowerPoints are AMAZING i barely attended the lectures because his PowerPoints were all I needed. Pay attention to the practice problems on them they're on the test. put the work. chem is supposed to be hard. don't expect to pass a hard course if you don't study.
Just don't, be ready to study a lot by yourself because he goes through the material so fast that you never understand it. Gives extra credit before every exam so be ready the 2 previous classes and you'll be fine, beware the ACS CHM final if you have it.
He isn't even that bad. Grading is based on 12 homework and 12 quizzes (honorlock). There are 5 tests that are in person and a cumultive final. I recommend doing flashcards of the main topics of each chapter which is found in the syllabus. For the final, he does provide a key concept list - chem requires lots of work on your own time, be prepared.
I get the other ratings for him, however for CHS 1440 he didn't try to twist any of the questions to make you fail. He made his tests pretty clear. I'm not as strong in chemistry and he went over all of the questions I had during his office hours and actually tries to get you to understand. Offered multiple extra credit options. Not easy or hard
He has an incredibly thick accent, barely speaks English, and speaks in a monotone manner making his lectures very difficult to follow. He presents course content in a complicated way through his powerpoints which he does not explain, only reads out loud word-for-word during lecture time. The course is extremely test heavy.
Do not know why his ratings are so low. Tests are very straight forward and do not trick you. If you just put in the time studying the power point practice problems, you should get a good grade on every test. He gives extra credit if you attend lecture and was nice in office hours.
I'm here before the first exam. Quite frankly, I really don't recommend chemistry professors at all at UCF. His accent makes it quite hard to listen to and understand him. I can't do SI which saved my grade last time and it's moreso an online class cause you just teach yourself. Man I'm so done with chem.
Absolutely terrible! He would just read off the slides. Then he doesn't speak clear English so it is hard to understand what he is trying to say. For tests, he gave us a practice test and told us the test will look exactly like the practice one. It didn't !!! Everyone did terrible on the test. You'll end up teaching yourself. RUN!
There's literally no point to lecture. You'll do fine as long as you read the powerpoints on your own time and teach yourself with the practice problems but as an actual lecturer he is unintelligible. Heavy accent + he mumbles more than he talks
Never taking this professor ever again. The only people who rate him above 2 or 3 are ableists saying just "try harder", "study more", etc - yeah try saying that to someone with Dyslexia or ADHD. I honestly wished I had dropped sooner as not only are his tests and quizzes atrocious but EVERY HOMEWORK has problems that mark a right answer wrong.
Personally I'm not a fan of gen chem 2 but he did okay explaining things mostly read off of the slides. He's always ready to help a student understand a concept they're not sure of though. Tests weigh heavy so study and do well. Personally his accent wasn't bad.
Please dont take this professor. You will be paying to teach yourself for the entire semester, because nothing he does has any benefit to us whatsoever. Its like he's actively trying to make us fail, and doesn't do anything that could potentially help us succeed. Please don't do it, take literally ANYONE ELSE
Very hard to understand and doesn't use correct grammar. Save yourself. Go to Valencia or somewhere else for this course. Test heavy, NO extra credit. I went to office hours to ask him questions before our test; he told me that he would not answer anything. Lots of extra busy work in each chapter of the test and fails to post PowerPoints on time.
Very heavy accent, can barley understand him and he rushes through the powerpoints like he is just reading a book. Tests are majority of your grade and will sink your grade.
He seems like a nice guy unfortunately he is not a good professor he reads off slides and is not super engaging he has an accent so be mindful he leaves pearson to be the professor and it is more of a self teaching class heavily lean on SARC/Tas for help he has made chm 1032 more difficult than it needs to be, exams are 50% of grade no EC or curve
His accent is very heavy and hard to understand him most of the time. He just reads off of the slides. I would take a different professor if possible. Most people don't go to his lectures and teach themselves the material. He will give "extra credit" paper before the exams but will only give you 20 mins for 10 questions that you have to show work
He has a very strong accent He cares more about getting through all of the slides then explaining them and making sure it is understandable. I spend hours teaching myself the material. His tests are difficult and is weird about ec if you have any other option take a different teacher if you take him read the chapters and do all the textbook problem
Heavy accent, can barely understand him. Most of the students don't go to lecture and teach themselves the material. 4 tests and a final, and they pretty much determine your grade. Just reads off the powerpoint and is very disengaging. Did not enjoy having him as my first college chemistry teacher. I learned only from our GTA's zoom reviews.
do not take him.
This class is not hard to succeed in if you base your education on outside sources. Percy is unreliable; his accent should make this class count for a language credit, and he can be downright disrespectful. I stopped attending his lectures because that time could be used much more efficiently outside of his class.
I've never met someone who hates teaching more in my life. He constantly accused our class of using AI, which led him to make the course/ exams/ HW unnecessarily hard with zero support. No extra credit, no explanations during lectures, no answering questions, nothing. It reflects poorly on him and honestly makes UCF look even worse for hiring him.
whatever you do, DO NOT take this professor for chemistry, and if he's the only one left, wait until the next semester. Cant understand his lectures had to teach myself. Constantly making up new rules that arent in the syllabus. AND DOESNT CURVE THE ACS FINAL!! genuinely think he hates his job or the students he teaches.TAKE ANYONE ELSE SAVE URSELF
I have never met a professor that simultaneously cannot teach, and refuses to actually respond to student inquiries in an academic and professional manner
I've been sitting in my room crying trying to do this homework for the past 3 hours. He doesn't teach well and I'm contemplating on dropping out of school. DO NOT take him for chem 2.
WARNING..... This Professor does not want to teach and should be struck off by the UCF Board of Directors. How this man is still teaching is beyond me. He wants YOU to FAIL; he will not help you when you ask for help, he will set a deadline date for Sunday, and then without notice, he will change the deadline date to a Friday. WORST TEACHER EVER!!
I'm a straight A student in my third year and passed gen chem 1 with a 93. I am genuinely terrified I'm going to fail this class I don't have an appetite anymore. I'm not religious but I'm praying. If you somehow end up in his class, I suggest you start praying too.
tests are way too hard
genuinely miserable professor. one of the worst if not THE worst i've taken in my time at UCF
Tests are SO hard. It feels like he goes out of his way to purposefully pick the hardest questions possible. He reads off the powerpoints and posts them after, but there will be stuff that wasn't mentioned on there so make sure you read the textbook. No curves at all for anything, and barelyyy any extra credit. Genuinely just take anyone else.
This person is not a professor. He isn't. He knows the material well but he does not teach. He believes all the students are cheating and refuses any curves. He makes it a scavenger hunt for tests because you are actively searching for what to study. It isn't even balanced. Most of the test can be on one chapter and little on others.
SAVE YOURSELF. Everyone that has had him has said he was the worst teacher they ever had. He has a THICK Spanish accent that cannot be understood in the slightest and he says words in Spanish not even English? It was so frustrating, and he tries to teach an entire unit in 50 minutes. No extra credit, no curve on tests and long homework. Worst ever.
Literally the worst teacher ever, he has a thick accent that is very hard to understand and on top of that he has a very bad microphone to go along with it. He accuses students of cheating all the time and makes it seem like its always the students fault if they are struggling, reads off power points only DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER
NEVER take chem with my man percy. You will be left more confused leaving lecture than when you came in. You cannot understand a word he says and he rushes through the powerpoints. Prayers and love put to those who have suffered with him.
None of these reviews are exaggerating. THICK accent, some words in Spanish. Homework will take you hours and you will still fail the tests. Average grade on our last test was a 57. Go to tutoring to actually learn the material or use the text book to teach yourself. Embarrassing that UCF hired him but I know he may be your only option. Good luck!
whatever you do DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF . dont say i didnt warn you
Homework,“practice exams”, suggested practice problems, 4-6 parts for each lecture, and does not finish lectures on time before exams. You'll find yourself scrambling to understand which material is necessary for the exams. Also changes the due dates quite often, and usually does so after 12am.
Listen to me, nobody else. Yes, your grade is 75% tests. No, I never went to class. I literally just read the textbook and looked at his power-points and got A's. I was so scared coming into this class because of the reviews, but he is not THAT bad. Just put in some effort, plus he gives extra credit in the last few classes before each test.
do not take if you want to literally teach yourself all semester. homework literally takes hours to do and you also have quizzes on top of that. Lecture consists of 4-6 powerpoints with almost 30 slides sometimes for one chapter. He literally teaches till the last day leaving no time for review and doesn't even finish. Use textbook to learn.
This Professor means well, he is a great person outside of class and I can tell he is passionate about chemistry. However, he has a very thick accent which means he is hard to understand. The homework's are harder than the study guides and tests. The lecture slides are overwhelmingly long and he speeds through it. Might as well teach it to yourself
Does not curve any exams, randomly gives bonus points in lecture, reads off powerpoint slides and doesn't explain things well. Can barely speak english so is very hard to understand him. Exams are pretty difficult because he doesn't create them. Overall just an awful professor and would not recommend taking him at all!
Very good professor. He is a light in my life. Don't listen to the haters.
RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN!! missed out on halloween and family time on thanksgiving to study for the exams that are MUCH harder than the homework. I ended with an 69%, HE WILL NOT ROUND UP. I unfortunately have to retake this god awful course. I can't even understand the man bc of the heavy accent. YOU WILL LOSE QUALITY OF LIFE. Seek a therapist now!
Ive never rated before but i gotta rate to say dont take this dude, anyone who says he's not bad is lying, horrible unclear communicator, rude, and doesn't curve + hard tests. I got an A & I can tell you this was ridiculous harder than it ever needed to be, people who say he's good are on an ego trip & glazing. Avoid at all costs
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!
do not take. does not curve, does not drop, absolutely horrible. i agree it is a self study course and college entails at, but provides ZERO help to anything. powerpoint slides are confusing. please save yourself and take gemma. did i say don't take him?
Already a hard class, then he has to go and make it more difficult. Don't think you're getting an extension! Your mom dying is not important to him. Also, and I know this isn't his fault, but you cannot understand him. He's from Brazil, so he's got quite an accent, but somehow his accent sounds Indian. He has a lisp. He speaks monotone. DONT TAKE!
I could've gotten an A if I studied by myself a bit more I do understand that. Do not bother to take this professor as this is the equivalent of an online course. He does not teach. He accuses you of cheating. He makes things unexpectedly hard. Take any other professor. Don't trust the good reviews as they are too nice about him.
super difficult tests, absolutely no curve on anything (including acs final), doesn't read emails and is overall just so rude. constantly has an attitude. please just take literally anyone else. never in my life have i ever been worried about failing a class before this guy
Gen Chem 2 is hard, and if you don't have a good teacher, you're screwed (like me, but luckily I passed with the skin of my teeth). Very hard to understand. Doesn't answer questions correctly—rude, lowkey (and I am not the sensitive type). Just don't take him, take anyone else. Please, for your own sake.
Do not take this professor . His class was so difficult and u was studying for full days up to the exam from 9-9 and still wouldn't get an A. The homework has 40 questions every week and his accent makes it hard to understand the class during lectures . The Acs final wasn't curved and overall this is the hardest class ive taken at ucf thus fa.
It is almost funny how terrible of a professor he is. No extra credit, No curves, no nothing. The course I took, at least, wasn't that hard so i managed to pass, but if it would've been slightly harder I would have failed. His only saving grace is that the tests are not too difficult if you study.
RUN. IF U CAN HELP IT DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS DO IT TRANSIENTLY! Very test-heavy, I studied for the final for 100+ hrs, just made an 80%. BARELY finished with a C, u have to learn everything on ur own. He goes fast in lecture + has a thick accent so you might not be able to completely understand him. He's a good teacher 1-on-1 tho go to office hours!
His own tests are hard and the concepts covered in class are not guaranteed to be on them. So you can waste your time studying half the content when only the first have is on the actual exam. He has poor communication with students in the few emails he does respond to. Scored 50% on 2 exams. :(
Taking AP chem in high school heavily prepared me for this course. Without it, the class would have been much harder. Be ready to teach a lot of material to yourself as it is often rushed in class in order to finish the required material for test. A good grade is achievable if the hard work is put in. Tests are not too bad but aren't the easiest.
pretty much teach yourself so unless you prefer that I wouldnt recommend him. We were given practice tests for the exam which was a huge help but that was pretty much the only help given.emailed him for advice asking which ways of studying would he recommend for the final exam and he gave me a rude, passive-aggressive email. i was in deep shock lol
Hard professor but gives out a lot of extra credit
His class is pretty boring, he gives extra credit the class before a test if you do the work there but otherwise it's not really worth it to go to his class. His accent is pretty thick which makes him hard to understand if you do go but he really just reads off the slides. If you study you'll probably be fine.
Just know that if you have this professor, you are fighting an uphill battle. He is a terrible professor with an extremely thick, hard to understand accent. HW takes hours for only a tiny fraction of your grade. Extremely test heavy and does not provide sufficient time or study materials. Take this class transiently if you can.
If it was not for countless hours of self study I would not have passed this course, i attended every lecture. He reads off of the slides and does not necessarily seem to know what he is teaching the class. He gives out “extra credit” the day before every exam, HOWEVER, as someone who completed all of them, it was never applied to my grade.
I understand the other reviews, however his tests were straight forward and gave a formula sheet with everything you needed to know. Lectures were decent. His slides were detailed and covered everything that would be on the test. My only complaint was “extra credit”, 15 minutes to do 10 questions and get all right. All in all decent professor.
I'm not sure why he gets so much hate I took him my freshman year after getting a NC my first time and then I passed with him as long as you pay attention and use your resources such as SI and go over the PowerPoints you should be fine.
Truly I don't understand all the hate. Were some parts of this class frustrating as hell? naturally. it's a hard class no matter the professor. As long as you study and do the work, you will be fine. as for his accent? yes, it is a little difficult in the beginning, but you get used to it. use the practice tests he gives you. good luck!
PLS DO NOT PICK HIM. Choose any other professor while you still can. Speeds through powerpoint lectures, gives lots of homework, accuses students of cheating often, and never spells correctly in his emails and announcements (also has such a heavy accent). Overall does not care about the success of students.
I would drive to this class with my seatbelt off because anything was better than trying to understand what he talking about. The content is easy so just study of the slides but going to the lecture is a waste of time.
I would not take this class again. Almost half of your grade consists of 3 tests and the professor is difficult to understand. I utilized the textbook and free tutoring much more than the lectures.
This professor is not as bad as the reviews are, I know what you may be thinking as I had the same reaction upon entering this class. His grading is strict and mostly based on tests, but the tests are very straightforward and he doesn't try to trick you at all. A lot of people in this section need to take accountability as well, myself included.
