Dr. Poon is extremely fair. No favorites. He is a good teacher. You can do well as he affords you every opportunity to do well. You must study to do well.
Dr. Poon is a good professor. Do the homework and the practice tests and you will do fine in his class. Just don't ask stupid questions in class, he doesn't have much patience for stupidy/ignorance when you should know the answer.
I cant understand the guy. He has favorites.
He is a smart guy but not a good teacher. He has no patience for students when asked questions during the class. He needs to learn how to be a teacher not just a smart guy!

if you like hard accents (chinese), surprises questions on exams that were never reviewed in class and his horrible humor of "hahaha I trick you" take him...if not take hoyt at least he is fair
sorry I had to rate this guy one more time. DO NOT TAKE HIM...he is sooo horrible. My God if I had only known how much of hell he could make my life I would have never signed up for this course. DROP him if you have him...wait an extra semester to graduat
People who do bad in this class are just retards. Maybe they wouldn't be able to cut it in the business world, so they should change their major.
VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH IS HORRIBLE AND SO ARE THE TESTS. THE PRATICE EXAMS DO NOT HELP BECAUSE THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE EXAM IF YOU CAN WAIT TO TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN.
HE'S NOT HARD. I THINK THOSE WHO DO BAD IN THIS CLASS SHOULD THINK OF TKNG ANOTHER COURSE. HIS TESTS IS BASED ON THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND ARE VERY FAIR. HE DOESNT CURVE, YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN...
Accent is no problem- over half the prof in the school have difficult-to-understand accents!! Deal with it. Good prof, went over everything on the tests in class. Not a flyby class but no class in Finance is! Of course you have to study. Sometimes allows "cheat sheets" for tests.
Poon does not answer questions that are asked in class. he simply responds with a joke about the student not understanding the subject. haha funny. but no help to students. and makes you not want to ask questions
He's not hard, very very nice person.
I love this professor, he is very nice, and smiles all the time. The class is not easy, however if you printed out the notes from the WebCT, and do the practice exam. You should be fine!
I love his rabbit teeths, especially when he says "nokes"... but that's about it.... He teaches you nothing about real world investing. His tests always have surprized questions. He hates answering questions.
I love this guy!
Great professor, if you study for his material, you will be ok on the exams.
I've a 3.2 GPA through 3yrs. of UNLV and this guy is not even slightly easy. Stay away unless you're a math wiz. His reviews are totally different from the tests. I don't recommend him; plus his English is very bad...
great professor! easy grader, gives hardly any homework, and always lets out early!
He's hard to understand. He teaches based off of a financial calculator. It gets harder as the semester goes along. Try to keep up with his lectures. He's a pretty funny guy.
His English wasn't bad. I doubt you'll find a single typo in his handouts, practice tests, or exams. People that don't do well in this class are just lazy and expect him to spoon feed answers, and should reconsider their major. Finance isn't supposed to be that easy!
This teacher is not for everyone, but he's one of my favorites. I'd definitely take his class again. He does not like to repeat himself, and he hates stupid questions- he will make fun of you and not give you an answer. But if you do the work and pay attention, this is a pretty easy class. I really like his method for presenting the material.
Best quote ever: "I'm not Korean, I'm CHINESE!"
Not as hard to understand as everyone thinks. Willing to give extra help and is on top of his game. Made finance bearable. He loves world cup soccer
Take this guy. I have been failing FIN 301. He is by far the easiest teacher I have ever had. Ya he's Chinese but he does not have a strong accent. Just come into class and always pay attention
Good teacher. He was very clear and helpful. Test questions are very similar to homework questions. Show up to class and study!
Provides helpful handouts, yet will not take any questions and doesn't like to explain himself. Attendence is a must to do well. Tests are difficult as frequently there are problems that were not discussed in the homework.
No need to buy textbook for his class. He does post all the notes on Web campus, and the tests come from the material covered in notes. He's funny when he kept saying "Am I talking in Chinese to you all" to wake up the class.
Hes a champion. he gives you pre prepared lecture notes, lets you bring a piece of paper with notes to the tests, and hes an incredible teacher. He does expect you to show up and make an effort. this isnt a class you can skip regularly. show up, pay attention, do the homework, and youll get an A. would recommend to anyone
HE IS A GOOD PROFESSOR, YOU WILL GET AN A IF U GO TO CLASS AND DO THE HOMEWORKS AND PRACTICE EXAM. WOULD RECOMMEND FOR THOSE WHO NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS
Professor Poon is professional and extremely sharp. Go to class everyday, take good notes, do every homework problem, and do the practice exams and will do well. Dr. Poon doesn't want to see anyone do poorly, so give it your best and it will pay off.
Must attend class. He expects you to do your homework and try to do it before you ask questions.
Poon is a great teacher. He gives real life examples of finance. he tests right off his notes and he covers everything in his notes. MUST go to class and do all outside work. not available for help outside of class.
He is terrible, he teaches you one thing then tests you on something completely different. He also grades very harshly. His study guides for the tests are useless. He is not very helpful, puts people on the spot for asking questions, and just says read your notes. Class average for his tests were 40% and 60% and he does not curve!
Professor Poon is a very nice guy. The class is somewhat difficult because of the subject. Go to class, do the homework and actually make the attempt to understand what each homework problem situation, ie what you have to do when a company is long, how to hedge agaisnt that. If you do that youll be fine. Professor was excellent.
Stick with the book, attend class and form your own study group. Tests are difficult and grading is subjective.
Took his summer FIN 312 class. He jumps around during lecture, writes numbers on the board expecting you to know how he got it. He'll explain if you ask. There were three exams: first one was easy, second one was hard, and third even harder. Read. Go to class. Ask questions.
Just took it over the summer. Not a easy course, but he tries his best (at least for first 2 exams) to cover every question you might have in his notes. In fact, for the first two exams (out of 3), all you really need to learn is how to master the financial calculator. The final exam, the teacher lecture notes were spotty.
Professor Poon's willing to review concepts multiple times. His notes are SO GOOD. They come from the textbook, which is easy 2 follow. 3 assignments, 2 tests+Final. Allows 8.5 X 11 notecard for exams. Attendance not mandatory but not recommended you skip. Certainly approachable. If u read the book & go to class, u can get a good grade. TAKE HIM!
Textbook is NEEDED if you want a good grade. You have to work the problems before the test to do well. If you don't, expect to drop like the other 40% of students that did after the first exam. IT IS A HARD CLASS, NOT AN EASY A, B, OR EVEN C!!! I'm a near straight A student, and it was a very hard class that requires dedication to pass.
Mr. Poon made his lectures interesting by giving real life examples. He grades you on things that are covered in homework problems, and on his lectures. He gives partial credit for missed answers on exams as long as you show your work. I definitely recommend him for Fin 301.
Read the book before class and do the hw before he goes over it in class. The key to passing his class is to take it serious. Great person and professor.
I thought he was a solid professor. His accent was a little difficult to understand at times, but it wasn't a big issue. Lectures were interesting and all the exam material was covered in the lectures and practice problems done in class so there were no surprises. Class material was hard but I thought he explained everything well.
I had taken this class before with another professor, but Professor Poon was the one who helped me understand the subject! Amazing professor, I wish I had taken him first.
I am not an English speaker, so I have to prepare well and read all the books before all my classes. However, I did not read the book and I could totally understand the materials in this class. Prof. Poon was great. He made every clearly in the class. The book was useless, except for homework. I easily got an A for this class without much effort
I took this class over the summer along with other classes so in the beginning I struggled, and failed the first exam. Only graded by the three exams, I managed to pass the class with a B in the end. My advice: make sure you do the homework before he goes over it, and study the notes and the quizzes he gives. He truly doesn't want anyone to fail.
Amazing professor. Took this class in summer session 2 and passed it with a B. Pay attention in class, read the chapters assigned and chapter overview before class, study your notes and quiz's and you should pass the class. Again, make sure you pay attention to everything he says. Fin301 is formula and concept heavy. Once you know it, you know it.
Professor Poon is excellent, one of the best professors on campus. He doesn't read off a powerpoint, he actually teaches. The material is tough and confusing at times, but Poon is able to dumb it down for those who don't have a PHD. You need to attend class to pass. If you ever have the opportunity to take him, do it, you won't regret it.
Poon is funny but he really knows his stuff well. Will definately take his class again.
If you do below a C on 1st test, get out. Gives you points, but the level of difficulty on tests 2 and final goes from hard to hardest. He tricks you on tests by mixing up homework questions into quiz ones making you figure out something new. So it makes your studying on homework, book, and quiz useless. All test @ 100 each. No extra makeup work.
TAKE PERCY POON! He's a great finance professor. He only teaches Summer Term session I. The grading criteria is three exams worth 100 points ea. Do the HW and take-home quizzes. It will be similar to the exams. Be sure to do well on the first two exams (which were easy) because of the final is hard!
For non-FIN or ACC majors: This class is difficult, but Dr. Poons teaching style is designed to help you out. He will simplify concepts to where you will understand them For FIN or ACC majors, Dr. Poon Is an absolute treat. Find any oppertunity to take him Watch out though, 3 tests are your only grades for the class, so practice frequently
3 exams, 3 chapters covered in each exam. It is important that you do the practice quizzes he gives you. Since youre only being graded on 3 exams your room for error is small. Print his lectures, he really makes it simple just comes down to effort.
Professor Poon is an AMAZING professor! He provides lecture notes for you which makes his lectures easy to follow. Make sure to ask questions if youre confused though and practice, practice, practice. Hes always willing to help. Would definitely take his class again if I could!
light class, book not necessary but he makes it seem like it is. better get the online version. 2 tests 100 each, plus final 100 as well. if you have basic algebra knowledge you'd get at least a B. 2 first tests are easier (2 chap each) third a bit harder (3chaps). Do and understand hmwks and you should get at least a B. Very kind and nice prof.
He is very caring and his exam is really easy probably because the entire grade is depend on three exams but also, he makes it really easy for you to understand the materials.
His exams are really easy. Not many chapters to study. Plus he cares about students a lot. I loved his lecture.
Professor Poon is amazing! He cares about his students a lot and he gives EXTENSIVELY GREAT feedback on our exams. He makes sure everyone understand the lecture and explains things really well. The textbook is mostly needed for homework problems. I highly recommend taking FIN 301 in the summer and especially with Professor Poon, then you're golden
Just listen to what he says to the tea and you should be fine. I second guessed myself too much and it will mess you over in this course. He is great professor. Gives you everything you need for 100%.
Professor Poon is very fair. He clearly goes over all of the content, and provides plenty of example problems. The class is difficult, but Professor Poon offers all the help you need in order to pass.
Poon is a great professor! He cares and wants you to learn the material. It's not an easy class, but will give you useful tools for life. This semester was affected by COVID so it went virtual, and we had to self teach ourselves which was hard. Had that not happened it would have been an even better class. Take Poon! You won't be disappointed!
Prof Poon is a great teacher and his dry sense of humor makes class go by faster. He does a great job with class pace and provides lecture outlines that you can reference through out the semester. He is available in office hours and in email to discuss any questions. He keeps in mind areas his past students struggled for his current students
Hard subject but amazing professor. He lets you know straightway this is what you need to pass, if you don't take the tip you will fail. He is very helpful in helping you understand the concept with a dash of humor. I recommend forming study groups they really help as the key according to him is "practice, practice, practice," until it's drilled.
I took Fin 301 class and yes, it was hard but Prof Poon really cares about his students. He would go out of his way to explain things to you and gives you plenty of resources to prepare you for the exams. He is by far the most caring professor Ive had at UNLV. And those are hard to come by. He is straight to the point and teaches that way too.
not saying hes a bad professor, but maybe online is not for him. He doesnt teach us at all. Gives outlines for chapter and A homework assignment. We only had one webex meeting before our exam to ask questions. Your grades are based solely off of the 4 exams. No extra credit, homework,or assignments. You learn based off the book. Teaching yourself
Definitely would not recommend if you are taking his class online. Your grade is based only on four exams. All the material is basically teach yourself and there are no mandatory webex meetings. He provides notes for each chapter but the material can be quite difficult to learn on your own. The exams are taken on lockdown browser.
Sounds like he's a better professor in person, but he is horrible for an online professor. You're pretty much paying to teach all the material yourself if you take him with remote learning. Finance is not an easy subject either so it can be quite challenging. He provides notes but they're a lot, you're better off reading and learning from the book.
worst class i've ever taken at UNLV. grade is based on exams, no homework or extra credit. if you do bad on the exams you'll fail the entire semester. There's only 20 questions to each exam so you're limited to how many you can miss in order to pass. Take it with someone else!!
He supplies everything he wants you to know for his exams in his notes that he provides for you. Just read his notes and study the practice homework problems and quizzes that he assigns and you should be ok in his class. If you reach out to him he gets back to you fast and is very helpful if you do have questions on the material being covered
HORRIBLE professor for remote learning. Finance is a difficult subject already and with professor Poon you are pretty much teaching yourself the whole semester. Grade is solely based on four exams only. Each exam only has 20 questions so you can only miss a few questions in order to pass.
He is straight forward, come to class and practice, and you'll pass. The class is 3 test so make sure you form a study group it helps, a lot. The professor is funny and caring with his students passing, if he sees that you are trying. Lol, don't come late he will put you on the spot, bring him coffee that's the secret.
This class was online which probably makes it 2x harder but Professor Poon makes the best notes, gives homework questions, and practice quizzes that help you prepare for tests. If you read everything and practice the material you should get a fair grade. He's also super helpful.
Amazing lecture notes! Very hands-off teaching style, but is available whenever you need it. No hw or quizzes, just 4 exams, so if you know you can't handle self-study no accountability until exam time, then I wouldn't recommend it. If you have the discipline and favor flexibility, then take Prof. Poon for sure.
I took his online summer course for FIN 303 and thought it was good. Basically he gave us the notes for the chapter and we were responsible to learn the material. He has 4 class meetings online a week, but its basically a Q/A time not a lecture. He gave 4 exams and curved every one 3-7%. He allowed us to use notes as well so if you fail, your fault
LISTEN! Many classmates would complain way too much about how hard it is. That's because they do not practice the examples and rush it in one day. I took this over the summer and this class can be done in literally 2 weeks. It is only 4 tests and you only need to spend 2 days on each test. Read his notes and do all the problems, please! EASY A
This class is only graded by 4 exams and there's no lectures, the WebEx meetings are more like additional help. His lecture notes are more important than the textbook and he makes it really easy to understand. As long as you study the notes really well, the class is not too bad. He's a sweet guy and is willing to help when you need it!!
Whatever you do, take his class! The class grade is based purely on noncumulative exams, with no homework. The tests are open note. There is a textbook, but he only uses it for practice problems. All you have to do is read his notes from Canvas and practice the problems on a continual basis. He has a good sense of humor and lectures are helpful.
I took the class this summer term. The grade depends on 4 exams. Light homework, not graded. HW helps you understand the concept. He provides lecture notes for each chapter. Go through all the lecture notes(especially the practice quiz) he provides and you will get a good grade. Exams are not difficult if you review the lecture notes carefully.
Professor Poon is a very nice guy, less of an asshole than most professors are. I don't know about his other classes, but his FIN 308 class is RIDICULOUSLY easy. If you know how to convert 1 USD to EUR you already know 75% of what you're going to learn. However, his lectures are INSANELY boring. So be prepared for that. Class is easy AF tho.
The class was graded on 4 tests, all non-cumulative, and the equations were provided on the exams. Very easy grader. If you have the right formula/idea written on the exam even though the answer is wrong, he'll only take of 1-2 points of 9 per question. Took no notes in class as everything is provided with examples of how to do it.
Should've studied harder for the exams but they weren't too difficult. He only counts the final if it helps your grade so it is optional. His accent may be difficult to understand at times but overall he's a nice guy and a solid professor who will answer questions and explain if needed. Take this class if you want a decent grade w/ minimalish work.
Professor Poon is one of the best Finance professors at UNLV. He really cares about his students. His class is graded on 4 non-cumulative exams and he provides an equation sheet for each exam. He also creates his own notes for each chapter and they're extremely easy to understand. His practice quizzes are very similar to the actual exams.
Nice guy but overly complicates simpler questions and expects you to work out his way on the exam. Class grade was 100% exams. You don't need the book just study his notes and class handouts and follow his steps on the exam. He is very generous with partial credit you will pass no problem.
I was dreading FIN 301 but professor Poon made it enjoyable! He makes the material understandable and fun!! May seem like a lot at first, but if you stay motivated, come to class and study for the exams you will do just fine. One of my new favorite professors!
Prof. Poon was a great professor to take. He himself is not what's hard about this class, it's finance that's hard and the fact that your grade is based only only 3 exams (2 midterms and 1 final). However, he provides his own notes to study and do practice problems, that will be VERY identical to the exam. Form study group, and you will be okay!
Do not take this professor if you have a 9-5 job. The hours are awful. if you are not in class prepare to fail. When studying for exams, in the notes the prof states "Why is this the case? Who knows? Just assume it is" Wtf kind of teaching is that? This prof is for people who go to school with their mommy and daddy money. Not for students who work.
Professor Poon did an amazing job at teaching FIN 301. He is a good professor; the material of the class is what is difficult. If you don't show up, it will be difficult to pass. He has a sense of humor, so that helps the class go by faster. If you have a question, ask BEFORE he moves on to another topic, or you'll be lost. Overall, 8.8/10.
Professor Poon is a pretty straightforward teacher. I took his FIN 301 class over the summer and it was really easy. All you have to do is study the material and understand it. If you don't, just ask! He's also really funny. Grades are only a few exams, no HW at all. Just memorize the notes he gives you and how to do the problems and its an easy A.
Professor Poon is such a sweet old man. He has an accent but nothing too difficult to understand. Attendance isn't mandatory but I'd highly recommend showing up or you might fall behind. Textbook is mainly used for hw but not graded. Only have 3 exams that make up our grade, very generous with grading and will explain patiently. 10/10 recommend
Prof. Poon is awesome. This is a more difficult course but he makes it easy. You're graded only on 3 exams. Lecture notes are easy to understand and exams are based solely on lecture notes, hw, & practice quizzes. Textbook is only for hw (not graded). He gives extra points on exams too. He makes jokes and is very kind. Take him!!
Amazing professor I would definitely recommend him!!!!!!
For starters, great professor and cared about the material and your learning, however, the class was set up the worst way possible in my opinion. You only got 3 exams, THATS IT. No homework, no extra credit, and on top of it, the study guides on the material were nothing like the actual exam. Huge waste of money and huge waste of time.
Professor Poon is great. Whole grade is based on 4 exams but as long as you pay attention and study his notes you'll be fine. Definitely show up to class and pay attention to lectures. Overall, definitely recommend him!
Professor Poon is nice and quite funny. The only grades in the class are exams but they are quite easy to do. My one critique is that he can come off as rude when responding to class questions. He also doesn't post grades. Other than that, his class was a breeze, I highly recommend.
