She wanders through her outlines with no clear direction or point. She has a very annoying halting way of speaking as well. If you can take this class with anyone else - do it!
Be very wary of taking this class...if you can find a way around it, take that route by all means. The class is unclear, rambling. She jumps from one topic to the next, answers unrelated questions from annoying students. Basically you don't learn much.
Perez cannot lecture, nor follow her own outline. Bring something to amuse yourself with during her ramblings, because attendance is taken. She regularly admits she simply doesn't know the answer to questions posed during the lectures. Not recommended.
You learn nothing from Perez. You are better off bringing all the course material to class and just reading it. She is monotonous and does not understand the dynamics of teaching a large lecture. Many times she admits ignorance on relevant subjects.
do not take this class if you can avoid it. she is boring, an incompetent lecturer, and overall mean. i feel bad for her TF's. i just witnessed last tuesday nearly 20 people walk out of her horrible lecture. grade= 1 midterm+1 final+ attendance
Save yourself...if you can avoid this class then do so. Perez doesn't understand how to teach a lecture or disperse information in an engaging or productive manner. Her lectures are painfully boring and you're better off bringing the material w/u to read.
she's all over the place with her lectures and structure of course. don't learn anything from her, oblivious to student's needs.learned more from the (overload) of readings about the course than her. grade is based on a mid, final&att. only. broad tests.
Don't bother sleeping anymore; you'll get plenty in her class.
She CAN NOT lecture! There is no point in even going anymore. Just read and you'll do fine.
SHE SUCKS
Ok, she is a horrible teacher. Our TF basically just reteaches everything she attempted to teach during the week. He has actually apologized to our class multiple times because she is such a crappy teacher! Worst lecturer ever, we learn nothing.
Her lectures are the worst I've ever seen. Class is useless, read the book, but attendance is taken. She also calls on obnoxious students, so shoot down the annoying people in your class on the first day and maybe theyll shut up afterwards.
Really boring class. If attendance wasn't necessary you could do well if you just read the book and never went to class. Also she makes you read the Financial Times and tests current events on her exams (30%).. don't do it!
Pointless, rambling lectures. Even though attendance is necessary I STILL don't bother showing up...it's THAT pointless. She calls on the annoying people who sit in the front..and we get to hear them ramble instead. The book is all you really need.
She seems like a very nice person, and is very intelligent, but she rambles on and on in lecture and is impossible to follow - then bases the final exam mostly on lectures! Avoid this class if you can.
Stay as far away from this course as humanly possible. Awful lecturer, wastes time on things that are either easy to comprehend or unnecessary. Doesn't know when to cut off comments from the class. Don't waste your tuition $ on a class of hers.
95 on midterm- b for final grade?effthat. never seen so many ppl get up slowly, put on their coats, sigh loudly, and walk out. i really liked the material, sadly. collective hatred by the clasfor the three or four losers in the front.
she is great. best intro course you can take
Prof. Perez is extremely knowledgeable--knows her subject backwards and forwards.
The course is interesting and she is knowledgeable about her field but she is a bad lecturer. The fact that some annoying people in front talk all the time and bore everybody is true and she does not stop it. My TA was great which saved me a lot.
She´s great and knows how to hold your attention. And this intro is the best prep you can get for upper level Po courses. I did great in my middle east and latin am cours last sem because I took this intro with her. Best choice I could have made as sophm
Great teacher. Extremely knowledgeable. I learned a lot and it is great to hear a perspective from a non-American professor.
Good class, especially if you are planning to spend a semester abroad. I did the Paris program and would have been lost if I had not taken her class. Definitely "hot" too.
Thank God for one enlightened view on world politics! Thisclass is different. Take it!
OK, yes, hot in a depressed sort of way. Perhaps she should do something other than teaching? Perez looks and sounds out of it half the time. It's profs like this that give the profession a bad name. That said, she seems to know something about the subject?
wow.. don't take her, she's a really nice, pretty lady, but boring as hell. You will fall asleep even before u get to class. She's unprepared, goes WAYYYY off topic, and sometimes, espcially when it comes to the US she doesn't know basic facts. oy vey stay away!
A frequent complaint I hear about Professor Perez is that she is "unclear" or "rambling." Nothing could be further from the truth. If you cannot follow her clearly established outlines for every lecture and direct, unpretentious style of speaking, then you must be **** or asleep. Plus: sO fine...
She definitely knows her stuff, but lectures can be somewhat boring, and tests aren't bad as long as you study your notes. Not necessarily a hard class, just quite boring.
Perez knows her material very well and although she may drift off topic sometimes during lecture, she spells out very clearly main concepts and ideas. Some may see her as boring, but Perez holds my interest. For extra help, go to office hours and speak with her after class - she is a great resource.
PLEASE tell this lady to move on to another profession! She cannot teach, is dull, and should never be within 50 yards of a classroom!
very challenging class but she teaches it well. tends to get off topic and thus cuts a lot out of the syllabus. grade is only based on midterm and final, so listen up, she doesn't base tests on the readings, mostly on her lectures and the "financial times". consistantly 5-10 minutes late to class.
She doesn't have a very organized teaching style
Knowledgable, no doubt, but not the world's greatest teacher. Has a tendency to wander off topic and to be inconcise, but is much clearer during office hours. However, she is smoking hot...
Although sometimes unorganized, she got the point across. She sometimes tried too hard to answer questions when the answer was obvious. Some students just could not grasp basic ideas, and they took a lot of our time away. She needs to learn to say no more often. But otherwise, good, nice professor.
An interesting class if you're really interested in politics at the international level. Prof. Perez is not always clear and tends to ramble, but she knows her material and is helpful if you see her during office hours. Just get a good TA and you will be fine.
Very stimulating class, professor, especially for an intro. She has interesting ideas, ways of looking at politics. Some students in class just kept asking dumb questions.. And definitely a hot pepper...
One of the easiest classes offered. She does tend to ramble and get way off topic, and she didn't seem to know about certain topics she was teaching, but she is still very intelligent and really nice. The Financial Times can be a pain though. She's consistently 5-10 minutes late to class.
Ultra smart and knowledgeable. Keeps class interesting. Even though readings were not too heavy, I feel like I learned a lot about Europe in this class. She means it though when she makes you read the FT. Current events are included on the tests.
Professor Perez is a great professor. She really knows her stuff, even though she deals with a huge number of countries. Even though she likes to start with questions and uses class discussion, if you follow her overheads, you'll always see where she is going. Good class if you are thinking of doing a program abroad in Europe. But exams are challen
Lecture topics are very broad and tests are easy if you go to class and read the texts every once and a while. Cannot budget class time at all; consistently late and panders to students who ask redundant questions and like to hear themselves speak.
she talks very fast and is not very approachable.
Some people should not teach. She maybe one of these people. It's been 2 months now, she still doesn't know how to work the lights. Her outlines are actually outlines of outlines. She's too "busy" to put them up on the site, which wasn't put up until a week before the test. But luckily her tests are pretty easy and the TA's know their stuff.
She talks extremely slow. Goes off on tangents. Her outlines are unbelievably broad. Basically her lectures make no sense at all. She needs to learn how to teach.
Perez cares about one person... Perez. She is extremely full of herself and is a lousy teacher. Half the class is either sleeping or playing solitaire and she seems to care less. She is unapproachable. Her Research is number 1, and it seems like teaching is like a disruption in her day. I would rather bang my head against the wall 500 times.
God I hate this class...
Professor Perez's class is interesting, but this is in no way stimulated by her. She can be extremely boring and its sometimes difficult to understand the purpose of what she is talking about. The TF's are great--if it weren't for them the class would be completely confusing. On the other hand, the class is very easy and tests are very broad.
Worst PO class I have ever taken. Prof. was boring and unorganized, making the lectures unbearable. The readings were only marginally better, as was my TF. Do not take this class unless you have to!
do not take her class! she is so bad. so very very bad. the book is terrible. her lectures are so unorganized its a joke. she discourages questions and cannot answer them even when they are allowed. she always runs out of time at the end of class and tries to fit like 2 days worth of notes into 4 mins. STAY FAR AWAY!
This class was a joke. i learned practically nothing. the book is awful and lectures are either obvious and boring, or extensive and unnecessary.
Superb class!
An amazing class, one of my best at BU. You actually learn alot of interesting and applicable things and if you put in a decent effort you will do well. Fair grading and a pleasure to go to class.
Easily, the best political science class I've taken at BU!
Professor Perez is awful. Her lectures are disorganized and she never explains topics clearly. She lets too many students ask questions and waste time on info that is unrelated to the subject or assignments. The Financial Times tests are pretty simple. She never covers everything she needs to and asks you questions on the material anyway.
Intro Comp Pol - She panders to people who ask the most ridiculous questions just so you give her a good review at the end of the year. She reminded us of her office hours right before handing the review out. She is painfully boring and her lectures are everywhere and hard to follow. Goes out of way to not tell what is on exam. Unpleasant Woman
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Just don't do it. Take Political Theory. This class was an ugly mess and Prof Perez is the worst lecturer I have ever had to sit through. Half the time nobody has any idea what she's talking about. You have no idea what your exams are going to be like b/c she contradicts herself so much and won't tell you anything. Stay away
As a PO major, Perez is definetly a great intro prof to have. As long as you do the readings and show up to class (and section) its a breeze. A very easy, but worthwhile class.
How this person keeps her job is beyond comprehension. She is BORING and BU should use other criteria than whatever they are for keeping someone like her. She might be a good bureaucrat (guess) but an awful teacher. Simply cannot keep anyone interested in what she is saying.
Perez is a very approachable, cordial, and informed professor. Her lectures can be a bit boring, but most of the time her content is interesting. She gives good reviews before exams in which she basically told us what essay questions will be about. I highly recommend her for both Intro to Comp Pol and European Politics.
Very intelligent, very nice, but somewhat boring. I would doze off during class and feel like I missed something important. The tests are pretty easy if you study, but the financial times is incredibly annoying.
Ay Sofia! you are a smart lady but oh so messy! class notes are a challenge to organize afterwards, at times I just gave up and tried to listen without taking down anything
This class is very easy and requires a minimal amount of reading aside from the FTs. Prof Perez tends to go off on tangents but she's hot and that makes up for it.
She is a really smart and engaging teacher. Her outlines are very clear and if you go back to them, it is easy to review teh lecture material even if she sometimes does go off on tangents in response to student questions. Extremely helpful outside of class.
Very approachable, smart professor. I highly recommend this class if you are planning to do a semester in Europe. I took it after the London program and which I had taken it before. I would have been much better prepared. Reading load is average. I liked her focus on current events.
I've had her in both European Politics and Intro to CP. She is great in the Europe course, knows the subject inside out and keeps a good balance between lecturing and discussion. I highly recommend the course.
Great class. It was great prep for the London program. Perez is extremely knowledgeable and once you get to know her, you'll notice she has a great sense of humor.
Definitely a great class. Perez is super knowledgeable. Great prep for any study abroad in Europe
Don't do it. Whatever reason you think you have for taking this class- no. She's horrifically disorganized, a terrible lecturer and frequently responds to questions with "I don't know". Perez's class is a waste of your time. The material isn't all that challenging but staying conscious in lecture is. TA's weren't very helpful either.
Extremely smart, except lecture tend to be boring and disorganized. Work load is manageable. Test grades are completely up your ta's which can mean bad news if you have a bad ta.
Anyone who says she is a good professor is INSANE. She says she's going to discuss one thing, puts up an outline (of an outline) of another, and then talks nothing about either. I honestly don't know what she thought she was teaching. I learned NOTHING from her, only from reading the books. Do not take this class, it is painful to sit through.
She is great. I've learned more in this class than in any other intro. Anywone who doesn't know how to follow her lectures is just out of it or plain ignorant.
Anyone who thinks this class was anything but terrible is sadly mistaken. Her lectures are completely disorganized and vague. The only reason attendance is mandatory is because no one would go to class otherwise. The material is really interesting - the only positive thing about PO251. Perez is nice but she just CANNOT lecture. Be smart & stay away
I agree with the comments below. I would advise Political Science majors, however, to take the class because it is such an interesting subject and necessary to take upper level classes. If you thinking of taking it for divisional studies or for any other reason, I would strongly advise you to reconsider
It really doesn't matter how interested you are in the subject matter, the fact is that Perez cannot give engaging lectures. She's a nice woman, and she seems to know her stuff, but she presents material in a muddled way that is just not conducive to learning. Take it if you want to specialize in comparative politics, there's no other reason to.
I could not agree less with some of the comments here. Maybe it is because I am a foreign student from South East Asia and I was better able to appreciate Perez teaching style. She has been by far the most sophisticated PoliSci prof I´ve had here. She actually knows a lot about a lot of places and does not resort to easy stereotyping (beware of thi
SUCH a boring class. She is very impressive with her knowledge on the subject and doesn't use any notes, yet her explanations are incomprehensible and makes taking notes in class near impossible- had to read a lot to get anything. Actually makes discussions useful though. I wouldn't recommend the class.
Terrible class. Lecture consists of the professor putting up the most vague outline possible on the board (she doesn't even put these online) and then loosely following. About five minutes in, someone will ask a question which sidetrack the professor and she'll ramble on about something that doesn't relate to what you're learning. Stay away!
Perez is pretty smart. I'm a bit biased because I really liked the material, but I thought her classes were interesting. The sidetracking questions people asked was pretty frustrating, although that's not all her fault. I thought it was worth taking.
Terrible professor. She talks about very specific stories about a huge range of countries and it is hard to decipher what you are supposed to take notes on and what is a side point. Therefore she overwhelms you with information and does not "teach." The class is great if you want to go into polisci, but I wish a better professor taught it.
I dont know how anyone can complain about this class, because honestly I had ordered the wrong book. Meaning, i did none of the readings. I got an A. She obviously knows her stuff. My recommendation: take a lap top. Its the easy solution to her disorganization since you can add things after the fact. Beyond that, the class was very interesting.
Perez is basically a horrible professor. I love Political Science but this class from the first day was so unorganized and messy and hard to explain. She frequently starts talking about something and then loses her track of thought. Don't need the textbook. To the person under me, I brought a laptop and still had trouble, so disorganized.
Most unorganized professor I've ever had. Spent the first 15 minutes of every class trying to figure out how to use her computer. Tried to cover WAY too much in one semester. The last part of the class is on the European Union and she only made a very complex and complicated system more confusing.
Obviously a nice lady BUT completely disorganized, incredibly hard to follow, and you basically have to teach yourself for the exams. Worst politics professor I've had at BU.
Professor Perez is a really nice lady, but probably the most disorganized professor I've ever had. Her lectures are all over the place, most of the time you have no idea what topic she's lecturing on. The material on exams isn't hard, but its impossible to know what will be on the exams. 30% midterm, 15% exam on current events, 40% final, 15% part.
Perez is great. Although this class tended to get off topic, she was more concerned with us learning the material than sticking to the syllabus. The tests were fair and the lectures were pretty interesting
I really enjoyed this class. Perez is very knowlegeable and helpful and the material was very interesting. I would recommend to any PO or IR major above freshman level.
Great Comparative PO class that also covers the US. Perez is a great teacher and the class was small so there was plenty of opportunity for discussion.
