Funny. Tries to make it interesting. Careful about not confusing students.
Good teacher, but want you to know WAY TOO much. expects you to memorize text.
auctioned off muffins
Cool persona. Auctioned off chocolate bars. He expects you to know the entire text. His exams are nothing like what he prepares you for. Watch out!
Awesome Awesome Prof.. Take Econ 202 from him if you can!!! :)
Awesome prof! Reminds me of the good old high school days 'cause he actually cares if you do good or bad! Really clear and fair, will curve and adjust test length/difficulty if necessary.
Very nice prof! I had trouble in this class but he was always there to help out students even if it took hours!! I'd definitely recommend him to others.
He was very good, tests were hard but he curved the marks.
Great teacher, does what he can to make econmics fun. Has pretty hard tests, but it makes you learn a lot more in the end. Amazing teacher, highly recomended!!!!!!!!
He is a very nice guy that is always willing to help. However his exam can be tricky.
Great prof, tests aren't too difficult, and he knows how to teach the material.
Great professor, easy to approach for help. Assignments and exams are hard, however, he is fair. Make sure you read the text, and actually understand.Expects you to really know your stuff. Will sometimes bribe you with food, ie. muffin or chocolate. For sure, anyone interested in Econ he's great.
Is also a highschool teacher so he knows how to teach. Tests are fair, but be prepared to apply the concepts that you have studied
Great prof. Explains things well.

He's a good prof and explains things well but he makes his midterms and finals harder because he wants to keep the overall average around 65%. So if you want a really good mark in his class you have to work hard for it. Oh yeah, and double check your assignments to make sure the marker doesn't dock you marks for no apparent reason.
Very nice person. His exams are pretty hard but he does help any student who is willing to take the time to learn. Probably the best prof I've run into at the university. Take a class from him.
Great prof. Helpful examples, encourages class participation. Curves grades though in order to get 65 (department says to) but in this class it went up.
Perry explains everything really well and uses relevent examples. However, the assignments and exams are pretty challenging so you will need to study hard. I really like him as a prof though and you should definitely take one of his classes.
Perry is a stellar prof. His class is HARD though so if you want to understand econ, take him, but if you just want to pass, good luck. He makes sure he's available for help though, and he does what he can to make sure you understand.
I thought this class was really pretty easy-- for economics, and as a class in general. I suspect that people didn't make much use of the book; definitely read (and study!) the chapters before going to the class. As for p. Martens, he's the nicest, most helpful professor I've ever had. Take the class, study, and don't whine.
Very Good Prof. The final and the midterm were pretty hard, alot of studying required. In class the material was farely well taught except he keeps the class there for the entire 3.5 hours which is hard to get through.
Interesting class and he's good at engaging the group. Horrific tests however.
Perry is one of my favourite profs. He knows his stuff and makes his lectures interesting. He gets students involved and gets you to think about how things work for yourself. I've learnt a lot in his class.
Fair marker, midterms were easy, the final was quite difficult. Assignments were fairly easy. Overall highly recommended. A fair amount of studying is definetely required. Recommended
Awesome class. This guys is so nuce and helpful and explains everything to you. He grades fair and if you get higher on your final than the rest of the class he will weight your final 80% of your overall mark!!!!
Very helpful, and a very nice guy who tries to make class fun. Tries to trick you on hard multiple choice questions. I gave him 1 for clarity because on the final there was a Q worth 8 marks that he had previously said would be a bonus Q, and multiple chice is too tricky, and not practical. To me this is serious, and I won't take this prof again.
Perry is a great prof!!! He made very dry material interesting with his class discussions and examples. If you are serious about learning take perry. Although his tests are very very difficult, in no way are they unfair. he gets you to apply the theory in practical situations. Great Prof but not recommended unless your willing to work hard.
Martens gives students real life examples of how Economics work in Canada and in other countries.
I have taken over 40 classes at the UofR... Perry is easily the best prof that I have ever had. The order of prof greatness in my student career... Perry Martens, Dr. Fuller, Dr. Pfieffer, Dr. Probert, Jim McKenzie.
Perry is a hoot! Makes an effort to have some fun with really dry material. Tests are really quite difficult but if you prepare there should be no problem. Better prof for 202 than any of the others I have heard of. Very helpful guy.
Not a bad guy, with a good personality. However, he makes econ harder than it needs to be. His tests are actually pretty challenging, and the multiple choice are ridiculous. Unless you have a future in econ, I would suggest getting an easier prof. However, you can do pretty good in his class if you study the assignments and know your stuff.
Very good at explaining concepts. Engages class in discussion. His notes from web CT had a few typos and one error. An excellent teacher who obviously has a passion for his subject, and an interest in communicating this with students.
He is very nice and offers many examples from real life, however, he teaches some methods that are not in the book and is not clear if they would be used in the exams so this makes it hard to do well in them. It would be helpfull if he had a bit of more structure in his class and detailed examples on how he likes questions answered in exams.
Awesome proff. Really engages the class, and very clear on what he expects. His expectations are high but fair, and his tests are hard but fair. If you actually want to LEARN something, and have fun LEARNING, Marten's is your guy. If all you want to do is memorize some theory, and puke it up on a test, probably take a different proff.
ECON 202: Perry's tests are a killer; seriously. If you study everything covered in class and the assignments and the text, you will still not fully comprehend his exams. You will however gain a deeper understanding of the subject and be better off in terms of knowledge gained vs grade point avg forgone.
Very good teacher, helps when ever you need it, tests will hurt the GPA. Mastery of the text is expected, so if u do your work, go to class, you will do fine. Laziness is magnified in ur final grade. How ever you actually will learn something from him!
Class starts off being pretty boring, but do your work because when it gets interesting it also becomes super complicated if you dont get the basics!! Enjoyable class. Tests arent as bad as people say, study a lot and all will be well. Overall: good class, awsome proff.
We used the 7th edition of the text but he kept referencing the 6th(which less than 10% of the class had)causing annoyances for all that were difficult to overcome and a waste of time trying to correlate the two!
Best Prof at the UofR, dont understand why there are not more like him.
Worst professor at the U of R. He is never avialable (doesn't answer e-mails for weeks and has NO office hours). Didn't seem phased that half the class failed the midterm. He cannot teach, he just reads notes off the screen. I am a honours student and worked so hard in this class. I will be lucky to get above 60 for a final grade. AVOID!!!!!!!!!
Horrible! Never take a class from this guy. Worst prof I have ever had in my entire university experience. Found out from others that there are better profs -- wish I would have known not to take classes with him.
Martens spends a lot of time each class ensuring that anyone and everyone that has a question gets it answered. He introduces his ideas logically, and explains them thoroughly. Whoever said "he just reads straight from his notes" has obviously not attended his class. He's a great prof, and I'll definitely be taking him again.
Worst prof ever! I agree with the person who said he justs reads his notes. Although he tries to do a few examples before class, they are rushed and not fully explained. He is not willing to put the time into teaching this class that it requires. I mean really--no office hours, leaves e-mails unanswered for weeks and shows up late. One word..AVOID!
Great professor! I did not want to take econ 100 but it was a requirement for me and I am so glad I did!!!! He relates everything he teaches to things going on currently (we even talked about news in class a few times). Also he explains obvious things to make sure everyone understands the concepts. Take him! 3 tiny quizzes and 2 assign. no midterms
My grade was not reflective of the class ( I didn't do enough homework). The class was introductory theory, I was hoping to relate it more to current economic climate. Instructor was well spoken and communicated well. Exams were tough but fair.
He is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is a high school teacher as well, so he really knows his material, and how to teach it. Put the work in and you will enjoy the class and do well.
Great guy but a rotten prof for 201. His lectures are better than the textbook he uses, but it's rushed, and he's not great at alternate ways of explaining concepts so if you don't catch on the first time it's very stressful. Others had him for 100 & 202 and loved him, but like me are finding 201 a challenge. Who knows, maybe it's just this class..
Being a nice guy doesn't make up for his disorganization, out-of-text questions on assignments and tests, and cramming several chapters into the last class of the semester.
For all those who say he's a bad prof, Econ 201 is just a hard class. I read over his notes, re-did all his assignments, read the text, and did the online labs and got above an 85. The 3 hour class goes by in 5 minutes because he's so interesting to listen to. If you're willing to work a bit, Martens is your guy.
One of the few good Econ profs! Yes, Econ 201 is a tough class.. but Perry makes it interesting and as easy as possible. I would highly recommend him, and would even take another night class just to have him as prof. Great guy!
Um... ok this is the deal. I would not ever take a class from him again. You have to work your butt off. I took a math and stats along with this class because I#m a transfer student who needed those classes to get out of the qualifying program. I was pretty darn busy. I didn#t really appreciate the added pressure and extra workload.
This prof is a really nice guy and pretty funny, but his teaching style could use some improvement. He needs to give more examples & be more clear on what to focus on for exams (you will discuss whole chapters in class, but the exams usually only concern a few specific concepts from each). Textbook is a must.
This prof uses real life examples to illustrate his point. He is easy to connect with and will be very helpful to those who contribute to the class. If you're a sit-in-the-back-of-the-room-until-finals-and-then-bombard-with-questions type of student, this prof is not for you
This prof uses real life examples to illustrate his point. He is easy to connect with and will be very helpful when asked a question. I can't wait to take another class with him
Absolute Great Guy! Amazing personality, He's super helpful when he's available although doesn't reply Emails on time. His classes are awesome, interactive with very good real life examples. Tests could be tough but he'll let you know what to expect on the finals. I think he's one of the best econs prof! Take it!
The most enthusiastic prof I have ever had. I spent a 3 hour class with hime every week and it seems to go by faster than my 1 hour classes!
One of the best Econ profs. I'm an engineering student, know nothing about econ but he helped me understand almost 100% of the material. Super helpful. Lectures were interesting. However, exams were pretty hard.
A really interesting teacher. if you want to fail this class, that's your best choice
Great guy and pretty good teacher. If you're looking to boost your GPA avoid him; his tests are very difficult.
Perry Martens is a very clear and friendly professor. His teaching is thorough, and he can engage your interest for 3 hours straight! If you have any questions, he will be there for you. However, the last few classes have been rushed, and we needed one more assignment to prepare for the final. Exams are quite tough!
I took a class with him he was super helpful and a great prof ever so friendly and the most important thing his skills of teaching ECON he got the ability of taking you through lecture which was an about 3 hours without feeling bored.
Worst prof ive ever taken. Will make u feel like ur passing and BOOM u end up with a 49 some how! Very tough marker and goes thru chapters TOO FAST. Only very few things to be graded on.. will never take his class again
Awesome. He really make you understand fundamentals of economics. If you attention to his class then its very easy to get good score in final.
He is a great lecturer, that always kept things funny! Near the end it seemed crammed in, and because of it the course got harder. He's a great guy and very kind... I suggest you go get help from him when you need It, and even when you don't. This way he knows you're trying! I'd take his class again!
Perry is a great guy. He is probably one of the nicest prof in this university. What i dont like about him is he just read the notes from the ppt slide but whenever he writes on the board we understood the course better. 2 assignments, 3 quizzes and a final. His quizzes are hard especially the multiple choice. Goodluck
test are hard and he is always late for lectures
he just read the notes from the PPT slide. always late. tests are hard especially the multiple choice. avoid this prof and take econ100 with Carmen if possible.
tough grade
Perry is a great person and is an entertainer lecturer that knows his stuff, but his tests are pretty hard and for that reason I wouldnt take a class from him again.
Great prof! Love his lectures!
Perry is a really funny prof. He takes an extremely long time to get back to you if you try to contact him, and doesn't do his own grading, so sometimes it can be tough. He uses a lot of analogies to try to make Economics easier to understand which is appreciated though!
Perry's a good guy teaching a difficult class. In the lectures he makes it seem simple and then the midterms are extremely difficult. If you're going to take his class be prepared to do a lot of studying outside the class to understand the content.
Tough grader Lots of assignments He just read the slides and dont provide notes online Tests are really hard
Tests r much harder than the assignments
Ok prof. Doesn't do his own marking at all, online assignments are easy. Gives good examples in class to help you to understand. Hard tests and require lots of studying. 3 midterms and a final. Drops your lowest midterm and takes best 12/16 assignments. Attendance is mandatory, takes forever to reply to emails
Honestly, a hilarious and truly amazing teacher. He can be a very hard marker, but if you honestly want his feedback, itll help you become a better student. Most of the people on this site are leaving terrible reviews because they failed his class and didnt put in the effort. Take his class to raise your educational standards. Great teacher
Perry is a very intelligent guy and really knows his stuff. However, he should not be teaching intro level Econ because his expectations of student understanding are too high. He would be better suited for a 400 lvl class. Really nice guy though
He should teach econ 400 something not intro level.
Perry gives very interesting lectures and explains things clearly. However, his tests are super hard.
He is a very great professor. I already took economy 201 before his. I figured out he is a hard-marker but he taught very deep of economy, not like other professors. Of course, I did not get a good mark than I expected. However, I do not regret because I finally understand and interested in basic of economics.
Great prof
Does not teach you what you need to know for his exams. Do no take this prof ever. He is so unorganized and has no idea what he is doing.
Worst university class I've attended and worst grade I've ever received. He is extremely disorganized and dysfunctional. His tests, midterms, and finals set you up for failure as they are not at all close to anything he teaches you and gives you a fraction of the time to complete it. Save yourself the stress GPA fall and do NOT take his class.
Absolutely terrible. I have had many teachers and instructors in high school and university classes, I have one of the best teachers from my high school, worst teachers list was still empty. Thank you for filling that void of my 'the worst teacher'. He doesn't teach, comes with an instructor's solution manual and reads from it.
He teach nothing, the worst professor.
Perry is a nice guy and he's funny too. His midterm and final are on the tougher side but if you study you'll be fine. Videos are long but you'll learn a lot if you listen to him and use your Sapling. Lecture classes were used as tutorials to explain concepts other than that, all videos were on UR courses available for use.
Perry is an amazing guy and cares about his students. If you use sapling and listen to the lectures you will understand the material, but unfortunately nothing can prepare you for the tests. The tests are ridiculously hard, be prepared for him to ask things that werent on assignments.
Perry was pretty good, the only thing that was kinda frustrating was the lectures and exams. It was much easier to follow along the notes on your own and the short answer of the exams were not like any other questions we did in the semester. However Perry was very understanding and may change the weighting of some things if needed.
I would not recommend you take Perry Martens for Econ 202. Midterm and final literally have nothing to do with the class. Very lecture heavy. Overall he's nice, but this class is not it.
Perry is a really nice guy but I strongly recommend you don't take this class. His midterms and finals are IMPOSSIBLE and I mean truly the hardest tests I have ever taken in my life. You are almost guaranteed to fail. So if you don't mind getting a very bad grade or wasting money on a class you will probably fail, this class is for you!
His class pulls down my whole average
I would say the professor is dedicated to his profession. Students are good to go with him. Moreover, I took a web-based course so I am not that much sure about his way to teach students as in in-person classes. Overall, he is awesome.
it was an online course so not sure about the in-person experience with him. overall, not bad if you are thinking of taking it.
Professor Martens writes exam questions that are difficult, vague, unrelated to the course material, or completely incoherent. However, marks outside the exams are so easy that they're basically "free" marks.
Surprisingly difficult quizzes and final exam. Watching videos was more helpful than the lectures tbh. Do not consider this class as an elective.
Sells hyperinflated muffins as a side gig. Great guy, amazing lectures.
