The people who complain dont know anything, and they probably dont even come to class anymore. Yes, he gives quizzes and you have to attend, but he wants you to learn and doesnt give grades you dont earn. Hes a good teacher, but some students think college is easy and its not.

Everyone who stuck it out in my class passed the course and the exam the school made us take to get into comp 1. This guy really knows what he doing, or we wouldn't of past the course. Period.

okay this guy is a really good prof. everyone who says he sucks gives stupid examples like "oh you must attend the classes and he gives you quizzes." ITS COLLEGE PEOPLE ITS NOT GOING TO BE EASY. If You want to laugh, do some work, and learn the material than take this guy. Funny and Helpful, just a tad strict but its to your own benefit!

I don't know what all of you other raters are talking about, but this teacher immensely improved my writing skills. Also, he is very funny and is like a friend. He really does care about your improvement. If you stick it out and do your damn work you won't regret it. Take his classes!

I really like Professor Helff. He made my writing improve drastically. Yeah he was a little sarcastic and u the truth about your work, but overall he was good. If you listen and you come to class youll pass. Also what more do you expect from a college professor. Youre just a lazy person if you cant pass his class.

This teacher is hard but he really makes u think. Iam a good writer i just hate writing but this guy actually made me intrested in the material even Poetry!!! If ur willing to do some work and learn take this guy if not dont take him cuz ur gonna fail

He has the to be the funniest professor i've encountered, every time i go in his class i just laugh with all my might, up, may be he was hard before but now he's great, you just gotta really pay attention and do your work, and you'll be good....

hes a pretty funny guy, keeps you entertained. hes a pretty tough grader, he failed me on an essay bc it didnt follow exactly what he wanted. only one absence allowed.

he is such a cool teacher. makes you laugh through out the whole class and makes teaching fun.more teachers should be like him. he makes you think a lot and is very helpful when needed. homework is expected the same time class begins and nothing late is accepted but that makes you more responsible.

He is a great teacher. He is funny and smart and you can get a fix for eye candy all throughout class. His class has everything. Also, my writing actually improved throughout the semester. He's great and I have him again in fall, two times a week and I'm very happy about that. Take him, you will not regret it.

He is so hot. Other than that he is a great teacher. My writing improved so much during the semester. He is so smart and so funny and so sexy. He was great and I recommend this professor to everyone and anyone. His class has it all: learning, something sexy to look at, and fun. Take it you won't regret it.

when he says he won't accept a paper less than 4 pages 2x spaced and you hand in 3, don't expect to get a grade higher than an F. he's not hard, but he does expect you to follow the rules and read the assigned readings. he did, however make the midterm fill-in-the-blank without warning...probably out of frustration to those not working

I took Prof Helff's online course, and though it's a lot of work, if you actually do what he asks of you, you'll become an excellent writer. When I needed help he was more than willing to sit down with me during office hours, and he is one of funniest, most intelligent teachers at BCC. Definitely worth taking.

Not sure what the person who dropped the clas is talkin about. How can u know a prof in one week? Helff is great; willing to help ANYONE who reaches outr (like me). Encouraging and fair, but doesn't care about your grade if you dont. My friends told me to take him and that I would be a better writer and 1/2 way through the semester I know I am.

He is GREAT! If you're here to learn, then YES! TAKE HIS CLASS. If you think its going to be easy and you don't have to show up for class or do any home work...look for another professor. He will make you work and you will see progress. HELPFUL just ask. Take the challenge and learn something. I will miss him. ;)

One of the best professors I have ever had.

Clear and concise with his demands. Work load is really not too tasking but he is strict with his dead-lines and rightfully so. The material he assigns is solid although one is mostly limited to the literature in the big ole green book. Take him.

Excellent teacher. Encourages independent thought. If you can back up your analysis of the readings, you can't be wrong. All you have to do is follow instructions for papers, read what's assigned, and participate in class, and you'll do ok. Funny guy. Great class discussions. And he's always willing to help a student in any way he can.

Intelligence + hilarious sense of humor + lewdness + great taste in literature = one hot, amazing professor. The selections from the anthology were great as was the other material required (Vonnegut). If you LIKE TO READ, he helps you develop analytical techniques. If you're looking for an easy grade, drop out of college and flip my burgers.

It's obvious he is passionate about the art of literature & desires to show students how to go about analyzing/understanding written works. He's so different because he also teaches you that it's okay to have a mind of your own. Awesome sense of humor. Class discussions are useful & entertaining. Who doesn't find an intellectual guy hot? ;)

Professor Helff is about as funny and witty and unique as a professor gets. Just follow everything he asks and you are well on your way. Plus, even if you hate reading, you'll hate yourself even more for not reading since the discussions in class can be fun. Like any class, stay on top of things and your fine.

Took it as a summer class-- thought it would be super easy... hated lit and all english classes. Took Helff and LOVED IT. I have never liked a lit class so much in my life. He is extremely smart and hilarious. Do your work and you'll be fine. Do the readings and the quizzes and tests are super easy. If I had another lit req, I WOULD TAKE HIM AGAIN!

he is funny, cool and very helpful but his literature class 201 in summer is the hardest class i ever took.... the kind of questions that he does in his quizzes are ridiculously hard ....there is A LOT of reading so DO NOT TAKE HIM ON SUMMER!!!!!

Professor Helff is very witty and comical. Class discussions are very entertaining yet educational. Make sure you do what he asks and you will do well. Don't ever be late! He is fair to all students and encourages all to participate in class discussions. He is a little over enthusiastic about failing students though.

If you actually do the work and follow his instructions completely you will pass. He is a hard teacher if you dont try. Dont drop the class b/c its a little hard,life is hard. Amazing would be an understatement. He's not an easy A, and he's very strict on deadlines. Very easy to get along with and talk to. If you want to learn then take him. If you're not dedicated to doing work then do not, because he's not a professor that will sit there and take your s**t.

His class is very enjoyable, he's very funny and fair. The only reason some people don't like him would be because they think they're in high school and they think they can extend the date when an assigment in due or just not do anything and still get a passing grade anyway.

Helff is, hands down, the best english professor at bergen. strict with deadlines however you do NOT need to be a good looking girl to take the class. need to put effort into your work He grades on improvement so you dont need a grad school paper you just need to show that your trying. and he is a terrific teacher and phenominal writer TAKE HIS CLA

Great teacher! I knew nothing about literature before taking his class. He gives a fair amount of work just make sure to do it and you will pass. Always keep up with the reading and deadlines.

I had Professor Helff for three semesters, WRT-101,201&LIT-204.To say that his classes are easy would be a lie, he wants his students to grow and actually learn through their education.He is very understanding and a wonderful person.He is very willing to answer any questions you may have.If college is more than a joke to you, please TAKE HIM!

Prof. Helff is an awesome guy. I had him for creative writing, and I really thought it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. He isn't afraid to tell you what he doesn't like about your work, but he does it in very constructive way. Anyone who says that he is a tough grader probably expected a high school level class. If you do your work and take your education seriously, you will love his class.

This was one of my favorite classes. Helff is really funny and makes the class entertaining with his witty comments about everything. Work load is not too much but not too little either, perfect amount. Make sure you pay attention to the reading and in class discussions. As long as you show him you want to work, he will help you with anything.

He's a great and funny teacher. Currently taking his class. Definitely learned a lot from this class. Handing in assignments and essays on time is a MUST. Make sure you type the citations in MLA format correctly or you'll regret it. He helps out every student and makes sure that no one fails the class. Definitely recommend this professor!

I took his class last semester and he was a really good and helpful professor. He is a tough grader when it comes to MLA formatting he wants everything a certain way. If you get lower than a B you have a chance to redo essay's and journals given and is willing to help you with revision. Not many tests or quizzes if the whole class participates.

One of the best professors I've had, his class was structured in a way that sets you up for success in the future. He really helped me with being thorough with my papers and really helped me become a better writer. I would recommend him to anyone who is up for a challenge and willing to buckle down and do a ton of work that will benefit you.

He is the one of the best professor! He clearly explains how the essay or research paper needs to be. He step by step teaches you how to write and read. There are few papers to write but he helps you a lot to write.

Not an Easy A class, pretty strict professor but he is clear on what he wants. If you follow his instructions and heed his feedback (which he does give, all the time), not only will you most likely finish with a high grade, but you will leave the class knowing much more. Do not take if you aren't prepared to work for it. Would recommend.

Great Professor. At first he might not be as you expected at but over semester he will change. gives outlines on what is expected in essays. All of his essays must be in MLA format or your grade will pay the price. Do not expect an easy grade if you do not do the work that is required. would recommend this professor to anybody.

Professor Helff definitely makes you work for your grade but it's worth it in the end. I would take him again although the online class was tough. Once you know what his expectations are you will be good as long as you follow them. Overall I got a B + and couldn't be happier. There are numerous Assignments, but they are all connected in some way. It seems complicated at first, but as you go along, it gets simpler. He is an excellent Prof who is very helpful and understanding. He offers many extra credits, and he also grades fairly. Overall, if you want to learn, I highly recommend taking his class.

Professor Helff is a tough but fair professor. He will help those who show up. I took his class during as a summer course so I knew the workload was going to be heavy. Definitely prepares you for future writing classes. Really good feedback and you can tell he really cares about writing. With that being said be ready to write a lot. Essay + an essay about the essay, and an essay reviewing someone else's essay.
