Amazing! Brilliant plus a sense of humor. Best class I've ever had at SDSU
Dr. Atterton's classes really made me think about things.
Great - enjoy it alot
The best class I've had at SDSU so far. Atterton is amazing
Intelligent, charming, and articulate. Makes me get up in the morning.
sexiest accent...great taste in music, very intelligent, witty, and charming.
Gorgeous, intelligent, dashing:)
Great teacher!! but you wont be able to take him coz he s leaving
a handsome, young Anthony Hopkins type; uniquely talented.
Amazing! Sexy, brilliant, mesmerizing - YUM!
great sense of humor. Nice guy

Great lecturer, Interesting Material, Wish I could have spent more time with him
Great class and great professor. Interesting and fun. There's an attendance policy.
my favorite professor, take him if possible
Wow, this guy manages to be brilliant and funny, strange huh? I guess british people are interesting!
Great teacher. Knows his stuff and breaks it down so you can share in the goodies. Reasonable grader. I learned a lot. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
Excellent teacher. Deserves a full-time gig. I'd take him for another class if I had the chance. Highly recommended.
One of THE best professors I ever had. I'm a second year law student now, and I cant tell you, his class prepared me more than any other I have ever taken.
Professor Atterton is without a doubt the greatest professor ive ever had...his MMW class was so great and i love his thoughts on animal rights. Plus, he is HOT HOT HOT!! I love Atterton!!!!!
UCSD are idiots for letting him go. I had him for my second and third year in college, and as a philosophy major i can say that he is a great philosphy teacher that doesn't hide behind his PhD: he is down to earth, honest, and human.
Funny, quick-witted...great prof! (BTW He still teaches at UCSD.)
WE thought Sister Atterton was an NJ at the beginning of the semester but in making a gum christmas tree, we realized how hot he is! YOU dont understand what hes saying, but it doesnt matter...Logic doesnt always have to be so logical, it can be sexy...we love you dr A. can i have a logic check up?
I recommend to take this class. I learned so much from this class. This is an easy "A" if you want one. You will have to read but not much. Before exams, he will give you a list of questions of what you can write about. The final is an essay. You have a total of 3 exams (including final).Very h/f
One of the most important and informative classes I've ever taken. You will walk away wanting to make the world a better place.
Atterton is brilliant. Makes you feel empassioned about every facet of what he teaches.State scored getting him back. Take as many of his classes as you can. You will never regret it.
he is fantastical. I would attend his classes I was not even enrolled in. The phil depart. @ucsd should have given him tenure immediately. If you don't appreciate his class it's probably because your hang-overs from constant frat parties prevented you from attending.
if you like fair argumentation, sober minded thought, atterton is not your man. if you like rhetoric, and something snazzy, okay. but if you like truth, goodness, and beauty, go elsewhere.
Great class, very interesting lectures. Makes even Heidegger interesting!
Atterton's great; his lectures are always interesting (even on dull issues), and he's always prepared to talk about issues one-on-one. He likes to challenge you to think, by taking the opposite view from most people in the class, so if you don't like someone disagreeing with you, you might not like his classes.
Some topics in Medical Ethics can be boring but he does his best to be excited about it. its not an easy class... encourages you to think outside the box

Professor Atterton is a brillant professor. Passionate and his lectures are okay. Go to class and do the readings. Pretty funny to listen to his accent.
Great teacher. Easy A if attend class and read books. Must attend class to understand material though.
Passionate, interesting, great to listen to. Material is intelligent and thought provoking. So are his lectures. Should attend because his tests are mostly lecture, also material. Good GE class to take.
Easy class if you go. I didn't, just read the book, and got a B- thanks to the curve. His lectures are interesting, definitely knows what he's talking about, nice accent :D, sarcastically funny. It was an alright class.
Hate the subject but I think he's a pretty good professor especially if you enjoy philosophy. Grade is completely based on 4 exams, none cumulative. First 2 exams are MC T/F, third is short answer and essay and final is MC and essay. i'd recommend reading the books. doesn't post pwr pt and goes fast through slides at times.
Quite dull really
You don't need the book at all for this guy, his TA provides study seccessions in which she tells you what's going to be on the test. just grasp the concept of it and you should be great. class average is a C though, so study hard. GO TO THOSE STUDY SESSIONS and take all the notes you can:)
This class is interesting and easy - go to class (it's mandatory) and you won't need any of the books. Tests are easy mult choice and essay questions. Good guy, knows his stuff. No homework.
Oh yes, and those study sessions are a complete waste of time if you go to class. :)
He's a cool guy. I really liked his accent and he had his funny moments. Lectures were boring since philosophy didnt interest me at all. I never used the books once and theres no homework. The TA's review sessions were really helpful since I didnt pay much attention in class. 3 midterms and an essay final.
He's an amazing professor. His lectures are captivating and interesting. He made me fall in love with Philosophy.
Really good teacher! Go to class (you get points for attendance) and take notes- you wont even need the textbooks! Tests are pretty much all based on notes.
Professor Atterton is interesting, handsome, and has a sexy accent. He goes through really interesting philosophies, and likes to hear his student's opinions and is always willing to help you after class. His powerpoint presentations are easy to understand and you don't need your book... just write fast because he goes through them quickly.
Good teacher, challenging class. i'm not too much into philosophy and he really got me thinking about it. Attendance required, you miss one class and need to catch up fast. All the material is in the PPoint presentations. He's willing to help you and motivate you. If you are an open minded person, this is your class!
Although the subject matter was fairly difficult, professor Atterton's lectures made most of the material digestible. Lost of reading involved but that is expected from a grad level class. A tough grader and expects a lot from his students. 2 exams (questions provided ahead of time) and one paper.
He teaches really well: clear, makes complex topics understandable, funny. Go to the lectures. Attendance can affect grade a little (if I went to at least 80% of the classes--only went to half--I'd have an A). Tests aren't really hard; just review the notes & assigned reading, especially the book by Cover & Garns.
I love Prof. Atterton!! The lectures make material understandable and most of the time it is not boring! Very interesting, actually!! I did not read a book just went to the lectures (skipped 3) and got A-/B+ on test and A- in the class. The tests and class is curved! For Philosophy - take him! You'll enjoy the class!!!
Great teacher, made class so interesting. Even if philosophy is not your cup of coffee you'll love it after taking it with Atterton. He lectures are interesting and he makes it worth listening to. He doesn't post his lecture so you have to come to class. Take him!
Best teacher at State. Makes class worth coming to and explains topics with enthusiasm and intellect. I got a A- by studying the night before, so the class is not that hard. Take him over any other philosophy teacher.
This is definitely my favorite teacher and favorite class. He really makes complex subjects very easy to learn and remember. He answers any questions and objections you have and really explains everything exremeley well. I hightly recomment any class with this professor.
He's really funny and his english accent is great! He likes to make jokes to keep people interested. It's an interesting class but really confusing too. He doesn't post the lectures online so it's important to go to class. The tests are hard because there's a TON of information. Reviewing a lot right before the test is key
This professor is the worst professor I have had at San Diego State. He is completely degrading and egotistical. I would not recommend taking him. Makes you feel like you can never state your true opinion in class. Not to mention, hard to understand due to his British accent and speaks too fast during lecture.
Overall, he IS a good teacher. Attendance is mandatory. If you don't take good notes or read the text, you're screwed. 3 midterms, and the last one has an essay...the final is mult.choice and an essay.
Plan on attending every class because you are penalized if you miss one and its key to take good notes for the test. Don't plan on taking if you want a A.....lots of reading and studying and tests are extremely hard. I'm an straight A student and got a B-. Turned out to be a one sided, rude professor that slashes your beliefs if they are not in line
He is the most awesome professor I have ever taken. Amusing, great British accent and really knows his stuff. He really made me feel like I am now at Uni! If you are NOT smart, and want to be treated like you are still in High School, then avoid. If you're prepared to think, looking for a professor that will inspire and challenge you, enroll.
Cute, British Prof. Could listen to him all day long!Totally hot, intelligent, humorous, prof ever. Life has never been the same since I listened to his words of wisdom.Shame he is married!Luv this Prof!
Loves animals! You will never eat meat agin.
Awesome guy. My favorite teacher so far. Makes difficult concepts easy to grasp. It is easy to tell he enjoys teaching. Definitely take him.
Awesome class. Very interesting subjects discussed in class. MUST read the book and attend class. Class is challenging but very interesting. University level class. Do not take if you're not ready to read, listen, and do work.
He is extremely dull. straight lecture and at times goes past the class time. Quotes from the readings OFTEN. His handwriting is atrocious!
Truly an amazing professor, one of my favorite so far at state. He's one of the only professors that lectures well without being dreadfully boring! You dont need to read the text, but its interesting nevertheless. Take good notes in his class, and enjoy the sweet sound of his british accent ;)
Prof. Atterton is really great & the course interesting. You need to come to class to understand, but he gives amazing lectures so its not that bad most of the time. The grade is on 4 tests & two of the tests have essays so you need to put in a bit of study time outside but its not that bad.
BEST PROF. EVER! His lectures were so good that I went to every single lecture (he made you want to go) and I got As and high Bs on the exams! You should read the readings though. GAVE STUDY GUIDES/ESSAY PROMPTS BEFOREHAND ! I would definitely take him again! Plus, he's from England so you can understand perfectly, and uses funny English idioms :)
LOVE HIM (and i'm a kines major)! His lectures are so interesting and he's super funny. Make sure you do the study guides he gives you and GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! They really help with clarifying the material. Overall, I would definitely choose to take this class for a GE. Be ready to work, though!
I do not think he is mean so this is nothing against him, just my thoughts. I personally hated this class. The book is not easy to comprehend. This topic is already confusing as it is. The tests are hard and the essays are even harder. I dont think he understands the concept of a power point. Personally I would not recommend it.
He doesnt explain clearly, talks way too fast, exams are hard, essays was not to bad but the grading was unfair and the reading is even harder.
Excellent professor. Make sure you keep an open mind when taking this class though as he seems to take a pro-atheist stance. Also, it helps to know how to write a paper. He is a fair grader, so don't complain if you fail. The book is used frequently. I didn't read much of it and still got a B.
Smart! Coolest Professor I've ever had. Classes are a real pleasure. Material thought provoking and Prof. is entertaining! Highly recommend, you will learn something in in this class.
he is arrogant and does not explain the material in a way that the students are able to understand what he is talking about. yes, some lectures are interesting but overall i found his class to be hard to understand. the study guides are the ONLY thing that helped me pass the class. he is not helpful and an extremely harsh essay grader.
2 multiple choice midterm, an essay, and a final that consists of a multiple choice questions and an essay question
Take this class. Not too difficult, inspiring, hot prof. Nice accent.
To the person that said the prof. didnt "explain" things:YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DO THE READINGS. IF YOU READ YOU WOULDNT NEED EXPLANATIONS. To the person who said the prof.'s "essays was hard"its WERE hard, they were probably hard because you cant write. This class was amazing, challenging and interesting. Youre in school to learn not to get easy A's
I loved this class. He is of SDSU's best professors. This class really makes you critically think the environment. The class is VERY challenging though. I got an A- and I haven't got less than an A in 3 years across science and nursing classes to put it into perspective. 2 multiple choice midterms, 1 half multiple choice, half essay final.
The prof knows the material. Be sure to read it. 2 tests, 1 essay. E.C. would have been nice. If you have a diff opinion think B4 U share it.
really hott teacher with a wonderful accent, and his lectures are interesting, but if you dont do the reading youre absolutely screwed, his tests are tough, and theres NO extra credit.
great professor, knows his stuff backwards and forwards! Test are hard ONLY if you don't do the assigned readings and the essay may be tough for you if you don't have the adequate writing skills! BUT do take his class! excellent class to take to broaden your philosophical stand. Great professor!
This is my third class with him and he is absolutely fantastic. The reading can be difficult at times but he will always explain the key points during the following lecture. First two exams were MC, final is MC and essay but he gives you all the essay questions in advance. If you are going to take philosophy, take his class! 330 and 332 both great.
I also had him for 102 a few years ago & he's even better than I remember. He's funny, explains topics extremely well, & keeps the class engaged (love the accent, too). Exams are based on the lectures & text but the readings are interesting so it's not a drag. Got an A- overall but took the class cr/nc. Read the book & it won't be difficult.
If you can get over his darling English accent, he can be your favorite Philosophy professor yet! If you're not into staring into a book, avoid! Tests were pretty easy. He has four tests; for the two tests with essays he gives you the essay prompt so you have plenty of time to prepare it before. Plenty of work, but worth what you pay in tuition.
I got an A- and I barely read the book. I only used to book for quotes for the essay tests. He basically gives you all of the information in his lectures so take good notes since he doesn't post them on blackboard.
he is very helpful. we explored each topic as full as we can. during class arguments, he would challenge you. the material really makes you think. tests, you really must read to prepare for because they are not easy. its a challenging but interesting class so be prepared. decent amount of reading. over all a great professor and will take him again.
very interesting class. it will change the way you view things. Atterton is amazing but you must read or you will get lost. tests are challenging but if you read and attend to class you will do fine.
class was cake, 3-5 lectures over 3+ weeks, assignments were graded fairly, drops lowest test grade. take good lecture notes and do the 1 page summaries you can get a A-B no problem, i barely read and i got a b+, no complaints, just associate names with their ethical opinions.
Amazing teacher. If you read before lecture and give it a real try, you will understand the class. Two bluebook exams (midterm &final) and one paper. Go to class, read, take notes, put in a good effort, and you will do GREAT. Love this teacher, he cares about your grade.
Took it Online. As an online class, it's very well structured, but definitely a challenge since I usually do better in person lectures. Just be diligent&disciplined, and you should do well. You learn a lot if you put in the effort. Listened to maybe one lecture of his (which was great) but I still did well just reading the articles. Textbook needed
I earned an A, but this course was not easy. 6 tests (drops lowest), 50 questions and 75 minutes to complete on Respondus browser. 6 summaries (1-page single spaced, only three are graded). 1000-word essay (no research or citations required). 2% of your grade for making a good post on a discussion board. 2% of your grade is syllabus quiz. Good luck
I have had Prof. Atterton for several classes, and there is good reason for that. The material is never easy (c'mon, its philosophy) but his lectures are informative, clear, and inspiring. He cares about his students; his demands are challenging but not unreasonable; and he wants you to succeed. I would take philosophy of boredom with Atterton.
Interesting course that changes the way you look at Metaphysics, Ontology, and existence in general. Great selection of readings. He is passionate about the material, and really knows his stuff.
Professor Atterton is wonderful! He is passionate about what he teaches and this passion makes his lectures incredibly fascinating. He is by far the best professor I've had at SDSU.
He was one of the best Philosophy professors I had while at State. He isn't necessarily easy, but if you do all the reading and participate in assignments, you are certain to get an A or B. Because of his passion, I'm have to admit I've been persuaded to the "dark side".
Professor Atterton is fantastic. I've taken 2 of his classes now and while they're far from easy, he really does bring the material to life. I always look forward to his lectures and hope to take him again in the fall.
This class was super interesting and, if you paid attention in class, you'd definitely get a good grade. He explains things really clearly. Also, if you asked questions during class or office hours, he'll go above and beyond to clarify anything you didn't get or discuss any concerns you have. I recommend taking his class!
Professor Atterton is an outstanding lecturer and professor. If you are willing to put in the work you will take a lot from his course. His expertise in 20th Century Continental Philosophy makes this a course well worth taking. However, being open to a philosophical approach that strives for new and untraditional ways of thinking is crucial.
Amazing prof, straight forward on what he wants and expects of you. Do the reading before class and after lecture everything will make perfect sense. He really cares about his students. Work hard and you wont regret it.
Great prof and really interesting. lectures were long but he tried to keep you entertained. It was at 2pm so I got supppper sleepy. There was clicker questions with 3 exams and a paper. He might change it next semester because someone shared the the final exam essay with the class. Make friends in that class and talk to the TA, Kevin.
Assigns 4 summaries but only grades 2(picked randomly)-waste of student's time. A lot of reading. Tests are hard, tricky and very specific(like he picks a sentence from the book/lecture and you're supposed to fill in the blank- that kind of specific). Extremely strict for an online class. Grades are not posted on time due to weird grading system.
The content was interesting, but you really have to work for an A because he is SUPER SPECIFIC in how he grades. Especially the summaries, you have to write four, but only two get graded and he doesn't tell you the grades to ensure you try hard on all of them. He is not understanding or lenient so if you miss something you're out of luck. T
Beware of the essay. He is very critical while grading it, and it largely determines your overall grade. I'd probably recommend finding a different UD Gen Ed course.
This is a clicker class, 1 point for answering and another for getting it correct based on the reading. His lectures are very good, and he clearly knows his stuff. He has a british accent. The class itself covers some very interesting topics. Understanding the theories can be hard at times though. There are 2 papers, and 3 exams, no extra credit.
He does assign a lot of reading, but I took screen shots of his lecture powerpoints and got B's on most of the tests (actually doing the reading and watching the videos probably would have gotten me an A in the course). On the essay, I did it the night before it was due and I barely understood the readings it was on, but still got a 97 on it.
6 online, multiple choice exams and he drops your lowest score. None are cumulative. There's a 1000 word essay but I did it the night before and got 100% so pretty easy. 4 summaries on chapters but he only grades 2. Feels like unnecessary busy work but it's all easy and doesn't take much time. I never opened my book once. Easy A.
Good solid teacher. Textbook only necessary if you want full clicker points; otherwise, guessing will get you at least half the clicker points. Lectures with PowerPoint presentations are super helpful and necessary for passing this course. Ask for a study guide for every midterm, just to be safe. If not, review all PowerPoint presentations.
Lectures are clear and easy to understand. Textbook and heavy use of the textbook is to be expected in his class. Many items on the tests are not mentioned in the lectures, but are mentioned in the readings. I got the feeling that he had a clear understanding and passion for the subject.
Some readings are confusing and most are boring and long. Not a hard class but feels like a writing class. 1 page summaries and an essay that make up most of your grade. Was excited to take this class but now just dread all the assignments. Nice prof. but wish there was more discussion & less writing that is graded mostly on grammar and not content
If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the course for you. I had taken online GE courses before and none were as challenging as this course. Atterton was a great lecturer and the material is interesting but the grading on the summaries and essays were too tough. However it is his TAs who grade them so there's that.
Thought class would be fun. NO WAY. WORST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN at SDSU. MATERIAL IS SO DULL AND BORING. TESTS ARE HARD AND CONFUSING. LAYOUT OF CLASS IS TERRIBLE
Not the nicest human I've ever dealt with. I would email him asking for him to explain something and he would either give a rude/short answer or forward my email to his TAs. It's interesting content, but SO CONFUSING ONLINE. Lockdown browser and short test time limit. I recommend you take SUSTN/PHIL 332 not online, but in a real class setting.
Dr. Atterton is an excellent professor. His class was certainly not easy, but it was worth the effort because I was challenged in ways that motivated me to grapple with difficult philosophies and emerge with a solid understanding of the concepts. His lectures were enlightening and full of passion, and I looked forward to every single class.
Best class I have ever taken. Dr. Atterton is inspirational and a master lecturer. This class is a lot of work, but is so worth it. There is so much to get out of the class and Dr. Atterton is a master at bringing out the best in his class. Truly a special class. One of a kind. If it was offered every semester, I would take it every semester.
If highly interested in Existentialism, and willing to spend a great deal of time reading, then this is the perfect course for you. A stellar lecturer, not only does he explain the reading, but provides real-world examples that help clarify the subject, and his passion for existentialism shines through in class. Challenging and thought-provoking!
Spent more time on this class than my major classes...6 (50 Q) tests on the 400+ page book and video modules, 1 strictly graded thesis, 4 monotonous one-page summaries. If you mess up more than once chances are you ain't getting an A. Some of the readings were interesting though. BTW do well on the thesis or you are toast
This class was great, but not easy if you expect to never do reading and skim by. He was also very responsive to email whenever I needed to contact him.
I enjoyed this class. Reading the material is essential. I suggest you do the readings first and then watch the accompanying lecture video. His narration is pretty spot-on and he has a cool English accent which makes it kind of fun to listen to. This class is not an Easy A by any means, but you will find all the material is treated fairly/equally.
Prof. Atterton made a difficult topic easier to understand, as he is an amazing and engaging teacher. Lectures were really interesting and his passion made me pay attention every class .
This class is extremely hard to follow along with. the first unit we did was way more interesting than the others and after the first one i got so bored. i think he overcomplicates lectures and the material he is trying to teach. this is a 100 level class but definitely feels way more complicated than that. dont take it if you wan an easy A.
Nice guy in and out of class. Textbook is one he wrote himself, where he compiled a bunch of philosophical readings. A tough grader for the essay and his tests are pretty hard if you're not good at philosophy. But, no complaints about him. Good guy and very passionate.
He is clearly very passionate about this subject which makes his lectures very interesting and thought-provoking. Easy to pass as long as you listen during lectures, answer clicker questions, and do a moderate amount of studying before tests.
This class is a bit hard to follow if you aren't already familiar with existentialism. Had to purchase (and find free copies) of 9 books total, and yes you will need them all to pass the class. Quiz every class time 30 quizzes total. No recordings or slideshows. He does mark you down for absences. One essay. He's pretty pretentious.
I thought this class could have been super fun and insightful. However, he is super strict with the test and writing deadlines and this is the majority of the grade. Make sure you watch and review the PowerPoint and lectures because that is the whole PowerPoint is on the test. Don't know how I would be able to pass this class without being online.
This class was kinda ridiculous. I was excited to take it, but absolutely regretted it. Prof makes tests Q's more tricky than they need to be. Also, strict on syllabus: Essay; 1 pg, single-spaced, no more, no less) then marks off for not going into more detail. Which is it? Losing points for not following essay guidelines or not detailed enough?
Professor Atterton is one of those professors that is a hard grader, but you leave the class better for it. Philosophy is not an easy subject and his soothing British accent makes the lectures easy to listen to. The class was very intriguing and made me think about a lot of things in a new way. There are two papers and a few tests, that's it.
A lot of people complain about this class/professor but it's really not that bad. There are 6 tests, the one with the lowest score is dropped. Then there's a summary and an essay. Just watch the videos, create a group study guide and open google during the tests (they're open notes). I never read the book, only when I had to write the essay+summary
I took this class for SUST and realized quickly it's more of a PHIL class. Each module is a different philosopher's take on an environmental topic, all presented objectively. Once I got used to the PHIL type lectures it was reasonable. Had to take a lot of notes and study a lot. Word heavy slides. You can do well, you just have to put effort in
MUST READ THE CHAPTERS TO SUCCEED ON TESTS. Pretty boring lectures but take good notes and read and you can easily get 100 on every test. 8 tests one dropped and lots of lectures. 1 summary and 1 essay that are easy just follow the rubric. Everything counts do not slack off.
Interesting content is discussed, and I was initially interested in the course concepts. This being a fully online course, expect to teach yourself all the content. Professor does little to provide any help or feedback. Not encouraged to understand course content but to regurgitate facts and information from readings and lecture videos.
Lessons each week consist of a lot of readings with an attached pre recorded lecture that won't teach you much. The wording on the biweekly tests are very weird and will trick you up, but if you do all the readings you should pass the class with ease.
If you are not interested in philosophy this class is HARD. Material is very interesting and important but it was too difficult for me:( Lectures are monotone and hard to watch, A LOT OF READING and it is a hard reading! The tests are tricky which is annoying for a philosophy class that should be based on the discussion.
Horrible and unforgiving
By far one of the more difficult classes taken. Lectures are pretty useless as he reads it with no explanation. You need to read the book/articles given as exams are based on the readings. Emailed him a couple of times for help/solutions and his responses were belittling in my opinion.
He's a knowledgeable professor. Seems like an honest guy and a class act. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Just because it's not an easy class doesn't mean he's a bad professor. However, test questions can be tricky therefore read carefully lectures/readings. Not the grade I wanted but I learned about environmental ethics.
The BEST professor I've ever had. I DO NOT understand all of the negative feedback. Can chalk it up to individuals who only care about easy A's. If you're interested in TRULY learning phil., Atterton will blow you away. He is passionate & his lectures were deep & collaborative. He's also available 1-1 which I highly recommend taking advantage of.
As someone going to law school, I recommended for anyone who cares about their GPA to not take this class. No one got full scores on the essays assigned, which makes one wonder what the hell he's looking for and how you could. Tests are okay, some questions obfuscated yet each point is so important if you want an A. I wouldn't recommend.
Outstanding professor! His knowledge and passion for the subject matter was evident in his energetic and highly informative lectures. It is a 500 level course so be prepared to read and attend lectures but if you do the work none of the quizzes or essays are particularly difficult. If you're a philosophy major you should take this course!
I heavily enjoyed the readings of Levinas and Derrida, especially the Animal. Great information. Only wished that he didn't dock points for not showing up. Overall this class was very useful for my research. He's very willing to accomadate to what's going on with you.
Took asynchronous over the summer. Easily the best recorded lectures I've had in 3 years of classes! Dr Atterton is a great lecturer and extremely knowledgeable on the subject. Very available and responsive with lots of office hours. 30-40 pages a week for the summer schedule. Weekly quizzes, 4 posts, and a short summery paper for the grade.
The class is structured around weekly tests that are open note. There is a lot of reading, however it most cases to answer questions on the test it's not relevant. Watching the lectures is the best option. Overall, the material is very interesting to learn about and the tests are fairly easy if you watch the lectures.
This professor is one of the worst professors I have had ever since being at SDSU. Very little assignments to make up grade. DO NOT TAKE PHIL332 WITH PETER.
The multiple-choice tests are extremely difficult. Your grade is 5 tests, one essay, and one article summary Somewhat tough grader on the essay and the summary. He is not flexible or understanding at all. It's not hard but it is time-consuming.
Dr. Atterton is passionate about the topics he lectures on. Unlike some professors, Atterton does not go off on tangents. The lectures are very straightforward, yet detailed. Be prepared for the quizzes and keep up on your readings. For the short summary assignment, make sure to not procrastinate. I highly recommend taking A. at least once!
Take Dr. Atterton if you care about philosophy. Absolutely brilliant lecturer, very knowledgeable, and hilarious. The criteria for your grade is very simple and clear. There are weekly quizzes but they are easy if you read/attend lectures. Bottom line: If you want an easy A and don't really care about philosophy, then Dr. Atterton is not for you.
Dr. Atterton's upper division courses are consistent and focused. Atterton rarely goes off-topic and the lectures are dense but very informative. The difficulty level for his 500 courses is appropriate. Be prepared to do a lot of reading, an adequate amount of writing, and substantial studying. Atterton is approachable in and out of class.
Atterton made an engaging topic disinteresting and structured the course poorly. Not a super difficult class, but I didn't learn what I hoped to learn and the prof was not really accessible, either.
I wouldn't take this class again even if it were my only option. He himself might not be a horrible person, but this class was only graded on 7 tests, and he stated that even though it was an online class, it shouldn't be less than 6-9 hours of work a week.
Lectures are super long and boring and he gets upset at people who use the restroom during class. He has no extra credit at all and there are 3 multiple choice midterms.Apart from the midterms there is participation points for doing clicker questions in class, 1 point received for attempting the question and1 point for getting the question correct.
He does not allow laptops in class and his lectures aren't the best. He lectures forever and is hard to understand sometimes because of his accent. His classes are so boring and its hard to not zone out because you can' t really take notes for this class. Our class score average for our first midterm was 63.
I'd rather run up and down the stairs at Parking Lot 15 over 100 times than take this class again
Took asynch last summer. MCQ exams + discussion posts. Recorded lectures were engaging (mostly bc of the British accent) but many outdated materials were irrelevant to modern enviro ethics. 1 exam asked us to select the world population but 8 billion wasn't even an option. Prof hides what you got wrong on tests bc he knows his questions are defunct
Very good lectures he makes it very comprehendable. All you have to do is show up and look at the power points he posts to get a decent grade in the class. A little effort can get you a long way.
I am a 3.8 student, I literally have no issue reading a lot and studying material, but 100+ pages of reading and 1-2 hrs of lectures a module is insane. I did all the work but this class is impossible. Grade is based off 7 tests, NOTHING ELSE. AFTER add/drop passed, he suddenly decided to use lockdown browser. Questions are worded super confusing.
This is genuinely my first C in my entire life. He changed his grading policy to be with webcams and eye detection on lockdown browser. My entire class averages 35/50 on the tests as seen in the scoring, and he does not care. I have never studied so much in my life for a class and this is literally online. He told us to retake during intersession.
No assignments only midterms and a final. The tests are HEAVY. He isn't a bad professor but he's not a great one either. I wouldn't recommend. His lectures are from 2010, and the textbook is written by him. I would avoid this class if you can. It was my most difficult class and it's literally PHILOSOPHY.
An hour and 15 mins of straight talking, with occasional attendance marking questions to make sure you're actually there. He's passionate about the material but all the lectures, in my opinion, are super boring. 3 midterms, 1 final. A lot of readings in order to understand the material, but no homework. He doesn't curve exams but no study guides.
Professor Atterton is very knowledgable about philosophy and does try to make the class interesting. However, if you are taking this for an easy GE credit, I would not recommend. The amount of studying is moderate but excessive for a GE class. If you put in 1-2 hours of studying and regularly go to lecture, you can easily get a B.
Professor Atterton is a great professor, and this is a fun class if you're actually interested in philosophy. If you care less about philosophy, don't take it, it's not your easy A GE. You will learn a lot in this class if you apply yourself, do the readings, and study for the tests. I personally found it very interesting and would take it again.
there was hw but it was optional; the only thing that counts are the tests. It was 7 tests total, and drops lowest test score. i would say take this class if you want easy A
Grade is based on 7 tests, if you fail one almost impossible to raise your grade. The lectures were good and not to long but not being able to have lower point assignments really makes it hard to do well on the tests and raise your grade.
