At first I thought Peter was a nice guy, until I received my essay back, which I failed...Go to him and show him things before they are due and you are guaranteed to improve. If you can't write an essay you're ROYALLY SCREWED!
This guy is a great teacher, he is tough but fair. If you go to him for help he will be honest and give you as much help as he can. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to novel and plays. He has good taste in lit, NO SCI-FI!!!

He is a nice person but when you get your essay back don't except a good mark. He is a tough marker and is very picky . It doesn't matter if you get help from the learning commons or if you show him the essay in advance cause you'll most likly get an "F". That's what most people get
If you can, drop this course. No matter how well you've ever done in an english class there is no way to do well in this one. Be prepard to receive terrible and unfair grades. Drop this course or you might just fail because that's generally what happens with this teacher.
Awful teacher, all comments about him on this site are true. Even if you know how to write an essay, he'll royally screw you over. Going to him won't help, he'll give you a few suggestions and when you follow them, he'll fail it.. just like everyone else here.

Never failed an essay in my life... he failed one of mine, the next I got a D on. I dropped the class and took it in night school, got an A. He expects perfect papers from everyone, and a B in his class is equivalent to an A+ by anyone else. If ya get stuck w/ this dude, just drop the class.
Never come across such horrible teacher in my life. Although you don't have choise, drop him. He is not going to pass you no matter how well you write. He will find out a tiny mistake in your essay. He will ask you to rewrite again and again but not give U chance to pass the course. Do not suicide.
Peter is a nice person. He is a hard marker; however, his being so is definitely unselfish, and will only work for your good. He motivated me to work hard, think and learn. It was great to be his student. Thank you Peter. :)

He is a hard marker it's true, but he is very fair. If you get a failing grade on your paper it is probably because you can't write an essay. He is a great person and will work hard to see you pass if you deserve it. Don't despair take his class and you will come out a stronger writer. Go Peter!!!
after taking his course and seeing my grade I can honestly say I hate him with a passion...and I have never hated anyone in my entire life! I have been a straight "a" student for the past 3 semesters and I barely passed his course, he cost me thousands of dollars in scholorships!!!Thanks alot Peter!

He is the worst teacher at seneca. IF English is your second language there is no way you will pass his course. The corse is very boring, you just sit and read the book outloud with him for two hours. Then you have the test and you fail it. Drop that teacher ASAP. Very , very hard marker. Seems to be a pretty hard marker, not to helpful. I liked his accent tho.
I took Gothic Horror stories with him and it is nothing what i expected at all. He is a very hard marking, inconsistant marking style! It is hard to find what he is looking...I learned nothing..not to mention the "C+" he gave me ruined my A and B only college record!

I had "Witches and Witchhunts" with him, easy class! We read 2 easy and short plays and watched them on film, plus a couple of other movies. Only had 2 tests, and wrote like 3 essays, one on each plays and one on the other movie... He's very helpful when explaining the subjects for essays, and gives lot of extentions, and help on them! Cute accent!

I certainly was not expecting such a hard marker, and no matter what i did, i still got bad marks. Not my favourite teacher. I was interested in the course topic, but it just ended up being so difficult in getting a good mark that my interest waned.
The worst teacher I have had throughout the duration of my studies. Had I been aware of ratemyprofessor.com prior to taking a course taught by Peter Austin, I would certainly not have chosen any class conducted by him. A word of caution to you all, DO NOT select any course taught by this professor.

This teacher is the hardest marker ever! He gives a word limit on the essays, but wants tons of information! If you miss 1 assignment, he will fail you automatically without telling you! And its true, when you take HIS critisizm, he STILL gives you a bad grade. Avoid if possible!!!
honestly, i kno my writing isn't perfect but i didn't even receive any helpful criticsm in this class. i felt very helpless, and received one failing grade after another. even a woman who taught english in japan got failing grades! i love to read and write, but i felt very defeated, and eventually dropped this class.
agreed the man is NOT human. he writes comments like..."this is rubbish", "this is a waste of words","if you think you will pass you are wrong", "if i cut out half of the words this would still be a terrible essay"...ok, this man has made my friends re-think college as a whole. if you value your sanity dont take his class.

He failed all of my essays (except for the first one, he gave me a C). I rewrote every essay he failed me on, at least 3 or 4 times at home, but he FAILS ME ON MY REWRITES TOO. I wasted so much of my time at home on his pathetic essays. I didn't think I deserved to fail the course and just because of him, I have to stay behind and do EAC AGAIN.
Im trying really hard to keep this comment clean. This is a warning to those taking or wanting to take this course. Switch out of it if you have this prof. He is rude and 99.9% of his studnts fail. His marking is very unfair as he is very judgmental. His comments are "rubbish" and do not assist you in any way. Dont take any course with this prof.

This teacher turned my usual A into a D. I rewrote my first essay and followed all suggestions to get one grade higher and my second essay I listened to his previous comments so that I could improve and still nearly failed. Explains essay topics and quiz info well but lacks in explaining how to improve an essay. He doesn't know what he wants.
He is an extremely nice man, but a very unfair marker. I not that great with essays, but I usually get B's. Even though I tried extra hard on his, I still got C's and D's.
taking this class was a huge mistake. he marks everything extremely hard and dont expect higher than a c if you do somehow manage to pass
Worst prof by far i go from mid 80s in gr 12 U english to a 55 in his course... the class started with 30 or so people and ended with 10 all of us got D's i think there was one C- switch from his class while you have a chance

STAY AWAY! you've been warned he's the worse, he gives something so easy like a grade 2 in class assignment, and then hits you with two essays worth 20% each. and fails more than 80% of the class.

I had this prof for my Criminal Intent class. At first i was excited, then i got my first essay back. I did not do well. I'm not the best English student but i have always done good. Usually i got 70s and 80s on essays but in his class no matter how hard i tried i could not get any higher then a D. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS U R A GENIUS!!!

I had taken Peter Austin for my Criminal Intent class. I was looking forward to this course, and thought I would do very well. I am typically a very good student as far as English is concerned, but Peter makes me think otherwise. I have always been an A student in English, but with this course, I am getting C+ AT BEST!

i never took gen ed and other "such" courses with a grain of salt befor taking his class.. i mean,, my grades in writing classes were always 80+. His class was the hardest EVER, and this says a lot cuz im doing an engineering program. Over-all I ended up with a B, although my first few essays were all F's (rewrote some of them :D )
I dropped his eac150 class 3 semesters ago. If you still foolishly choose him after reading all the previous posts about him, you may be decepted by his seemingly good teaching, but wait til you get your first piece of work graded. If thats not enough to convince you to leave, then you better drop the course before the mark goes on your transcript

I HATE HIM! IN GRADE 12 ENGLISH I GOT AN 80%.. I LOVED this professor. i've had two classes with him and loved it. he lets your imagination run with the readings by making you read so ALWAYS bring your book. I really enjoyed this class. Funny looking guy, nice but really hard marker! (almost everyone was failing the course and 2 had to go back and do english 149) doesn't really teach he reads loudly and talks about it and says there will be an essay next class about that. Rather drop it than failing it! Not even a fun class.

Although I had a hard time with this course, I will always be grateful with him.I had to do extra work, like getting a tutor and getting some books on how to write essays.I improved a lot my writing.
As a Canadian whose first language is English, I find this course quite easy, I cannot speak for ESL students though. For me he is very clear, funny, and explains things fairly well. Most classes are spent reading out loud, so if you miss some classes it's quite easy to catch up. When marking tests and essays, I think he is very fair.
He never really teach in the class, just read the book which is an expensive piece of junk. If you wanna keep your GPA, just avoid him
Marked up my essays a bit but the final marks were no different from what I usually get. Really surprised by the other reviews, he let people re-do their work a lot and I still got a B while missing one essay and mucking up my exam. Not ESL friendly perhaps?
AMAZING prof. walked into class hearing bad reviews and even though i got an F on my first essay he gives you the chance to re-do ALL your essays. you MUST go to him and talk to him and he will be more than willing to help. finished with an A. always available for contact via email so you can send him your essay and he will be send his input back.

Adequate grader. I took basic college English course - you are obligated to write at some sort of professional level - clear, concise and correct. He will teach you that. Gives ample time to go over work, with all students, is readily available for any clarifications, as well as post course advice.
He's doesn't follow an academic grading scheme and fails students simply because he feels like it. He's on a power high. He has favourites and only those students get fair grades.
Wow. At first I this class because I was hoping it'll be interesting and easy for a gen ed. But boy, I was wrong. He fails half of his class with his 20% worth essays. He makes you re write it though you have to ask him for his suggestions. If you can drop this class as early as you can, please do. This class messed my gpa so much.

He is an amazing professor, and even though the readings don't always make sense, he does an EXCELLENT job at going over them afterwards and explaining them thoroughly. He makes essays seem easy; he breaks everything down, which helps a lot. Even if he is a "hard marker" he is still a fair and accurate marker. Work hard and you will get results.
Peter is great! He helped me a lot and made me improve my writing, if you are willing to pay attention, and follow his simple instructions, it will be easy to get a good grade. Make sure to take notes while he is explaining the stories, because they you can use them while writing the essays.
Peter is an awesome professor. Though he is a tough marker he gives TONS of chances to everyone to bring up their grade and re-write essays that you failed. He literally sits through and tells you exactly what he expects from each of your essays. Follow instructions and you're going to do great.
Professor Austin is amazing. He is a very nice person, quick marker but he is tough. But it is easy to get an A - just listen. He will go over exactly what he expects in each essay paragraph by paragraph; if you do exactly what he says you'll get an A. Just don't add a lot of "filler" words and cut to the chase.
I failed my first essay written in his class. At the time I despised him. I knew another professor would have given me a better grade which would not have given me the determination to do better and to actually learn. He gave me a chance to rewrite and I ended up a better writer because of him. Most people failed his class, deservingly so.

Although, he is hard and picky marker, for me, it really motivates you to better yourself and earn the grade. He is very clear on what he wants in class on assignments. His feedback when written is vague, but clear if you ask him in person and he will tell you how to better yourself. Take him you want a challenge and improve yourself.

I loved his class. He is a great teacher and his lectures are very interesting. His grading makes you a better writer, and he's always there to help you if you need it. He's hilarious and very blunt so if you take everything personally you might not like him. I would definitely take his class again, probably one of the best professors I've had.
An interesting and very friendly person but not a very good teacher. When you meet him he's laid back and friendly, he makes plenty of jokes. Sadly he doesn't teach very much. 2 out of 3 lectures we read the stories and discussed the essay topics and 3rd lecture we wrote an in-class essay. Not great if you want to learn or get a decent grade.
Why is Peter teaching at Seneca? Many students have asked that at least once when taking his classes. He is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He rarely gives chances. I am excellent at writing so when he graded me a "C" I found that to be offensive and fought him for an appropriate grade. I dropped his course as his teaching is ridiculous
