boring, awful quizzes!! 4/5 = fail?!? high expectations, has amusing moments though.
Unlike most eglish profs he actually teaches you what he expects from you ... you will like his class
great teacher, very fair, teaches you things you actually need to know makes class fun.
love the class
sooo nice...best english teacher/before him never knew how to use punctuation..very helpful but a little tough...overall..excellent...thoroughly enjoy his class
awesome teacher, empasizes clarity and writing mechanics which most teachers do NOT teach; the mechanics is also what he grades on, so he is a fair teacher. if you dont learn the stuff, or dont try, then its your fault that you fail
hard marker but good teacher
I don't know anything aboout this guy, but he is totally hot!
Very approachable prof, always willing to listen to your views on the material. Likes people to participate in class, so SPEAK UP! overall a really nice guy. easy on the eyes too.
Love this man, want to marry him! Excellent teacher, teaches you how to write, and helps you improve. Very cute. Great class! Fair marker.
Excellent teacher! Tries to get the class involved and cares about how his students do on essays. If you have any questions, he will glady answer them. Fair marker, and really knows his material. I hated English, but he made it interesting!
Awsome teacher... great methods and not a hard marker, hope he stays another year
Best english prof ever. at first i thought he demanded too much but he's awesome. makes class interesting and funny always willing to help interesting note- eng 1129-his class is the first one full- bad luck for me
Great prof. He is always willing to go over your work with you and explain what you lost marks for. Only complaint is that his comments are a little on the messy side sometimes.
I've always hated English class, but I honestly look forward to my lectures because of him. He comes across like a jerk, but it's all part of his game, and I love playing it. He's reviting, concerned, philosophically deep, and quite captivating.
Nice teacher. Watch out if you don't participate cause he's very into class invovlment. Lectures are very helpful, expects original ideas. His notes are very messy. Hard marker. Marks as if not a first year english course but, a second year course.
Don't read these peoples comment unless there telling you he's hard because he really is. He's not a regular Langara faculty member, usually teaches at UBC. If you are looking for an easy English prof, I strongly suggest you should not take him then!
Awesome Teacher! You can learn so much from him, but only if you want to. I didn't have a clue how to write at all when I started his class, however, I could now write an essay on how great he is at teaching. Take a class with him if you want to learn!
EXTREMELY HARD MARKER. THINKS LIKE WHERE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS FROM UBC. NEEDS CLASS PARTICIPATION AND IF NOT SAYS "YOU GUYS BETTER TALK OR YOUR GETTING DETENTION OR AN IN-CLASS ESSAY, WTF IS WITH THAT. YOU WILL LEARN A LITTLE, BUT WILL STRUGGLE FORSU
Peter is the best!!! I loved every class, and I learnt so much! Although he seems like a tough teacher, he has a great sense of humour and his English class taught me way more than just essay writing:he makes you think...he rocks!!!
He's a strange guy. Interesting perspective, interesting in lectures, but vague in what he wants from assigments. His comments are unreadable and he is a very tough marker.Moody for sure, one day funny one day jerky.Biggest complaint, he isn'nt clear
Excellent
Cool. Dishevelled. Cute.
Awesome teacher. Always willing to spend some time and go over assignments and help with anything that is unclear. Can sometimes be picky with his marking but on the whole is good. Learned a whole lot and he makes lectures interesting.
Peter taught the basics and did it very well. He is a very tough marker but that makes the grade you achieve that much sweeter. If you are looking for an easy (lazy) grade, he's not the teacher for you. He's excellent!!! I learned a lot.
arrogant..never smiles
actually not at all arrogant, and smiling loads of times
awesome teacher. very helpful. he is perfect.
excellent english teacher, very intersting classes, never boring. hes very helpful with your essays and he shows you how to improve them. highly recommend him
hahaa, he he think he likes hugh grant! wuteva! u can say he is reli clear, but then he is a reli hard marker too. u know what he wants, cuz he will tell u, but passing grade not garuenteed!
rebel without a cause. but i guess he kinda has a cause. i like him. good overall teacher.
Awesome class! Intimidating on the 1st day but once he gets to know the class, he's pretty nice. He occasionally makes jokes and when he does it's funny...I definitely recommend him for English!
fabulous prof. very intimidating on the first day, but one you get to know him, not so scary. his lectures are very clear and he tells you exactly what he expects. incredibly funny. you'll only do well if you work your arse off!
he is a great teacher. the only problem is that he is going to UBc next term so if you are going to UBC take him, if not sucks to be you. not that hard of a marker but not easy. if you pay attention an don't skip class you will do fine
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
hes tough, but if you are good in english you should be ok. hes helpful and you learn a lot, however getting a decent mark isn't easy. he seems like a hard prof at first. but hes just trying to scare u. marking sceme is nicely laid out, therefore you have more chances to improve you mark.
he's good looking which helps! he comes acros like he's arrogant, whihc he sortof is. i liked this class alot!
HOT HOT HOT!
Again, Peter has proved to be the best teacher in the universe. I will miss his classes!
Excellent teacher. really helpful advice. Very understanding and witty. Interesting classes and very helpful marking although his corrections are basically illegible. I highly recommend Peter if you're looking for a challenging English course with a prof who will demand high quality work.
Peter is an awesome prof!he's a fair marker, but is not easy.he challenges you and makes u work hard.his lectures are always interesting,he explains things well, and is always willing to take time out to help u.on a differnt note, Peter is sooo HOT! he's witty and has charisma!i'll miss him!

Very interesting class. You gotta keep up with this guy if you don't want to get lost in class discussion. I guess just pay attention and not be "giggly boys" as prof. babiak put it, then you will be ok.
He was very clear on what is expected of the students and also very clear on instructions of the assignements or papers. He spent a lot of time on teaching us how to write a better paper, which helped us not only understand the content but provide better results. Great teacher!!

he is so hard! he teaches great, but he is way too hard if your english is not good enough. Better not take him if u are an ESL student....because he expect you to know everything already....got really hard readings and mark reallly hard...
Hello! This an intensive class that will challenge everyone. If you focus and apply yourself diligently you should achieve success. You will be asked to do a lot of short writing assignments...but this is to your benefit. If you are deficient on the basic grammar and comprehension skills then I would avoid, otherwise take the challenge and learn
Peter is hands down the greatest teacher I've ever had in any department. He's so intelligent and made me want to get involved in the class. I wish I could marry him.
I don't know how you guys can say that he is nice!! He is the worst teacher ever!! I took his class to improve my English 1127. Instead, I did worse!!!I was taking English 1129 at the same time and I GOT A C+!!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Let's start by stating that this class is not a breeze. As in life, U must commit yourself to any task U undertake. Peter will not hand-hold U all the way but does provide guidance to "lead" U. He approaches his teaching from a different angle but affective in his delivery. Makes U think and B ORIGINAL. Thinking hurts like escaping Plato's Cave.
"Your average looks like a B" but he gives you a C-. No justification. How does he mark his students work? He is easy to approach and nice on occasions but he is very high on himself. "You are plankton" in his class. Small and easy to feed upon. He is an okay professor but that is all.
It's not fair to say he is bad, he just marks hard. However, as long as you approach him and ask for help then you will get all the help you will ever need. Yea, it would be nice if he marks a bit easier. Overall his class is cool, he makes you want to go to his class even if you hate English. Just take him if you want to MASTER English. ^^
yes, it was hard, and I got a b- only, but I learned some stuff, and the whiners here probably were planckton in class
For a first year course this was a blast, challenging and i wasn't spoon fed. If you want to be treated like a high school kid, then don't take this class.
Extremely hard professor, usually teaches at UBC...your GPA will substantially drop after taking him, and he marks the essays and assignments VERY VERY HARD & CRITICAL! If you still want to take him good luck because you'll need it!!!!
Best English prof ever!!!!
Love this guy!! Likes those who have an opinion and makes sure to go over each story for a long time. His content is sometimes kinky, which makes class entertaining.
Peter is a good teacher, he enjoys what he does which is helpful in making class interesting and enjoyable. His assignments are helpful in preparing in us in future essay/exams. Yea he may be a tough marker but his expectations are reasonable because he is a fair marker. Peter is also clear with assignment instructions and what is expected in class
he's a pretty good prof! Clear about what he wants, teaches well~ but he's definitely not a easy one. he was a really hard marker. So if you're not serious about this class, I don't suggest that you take it.

He works very hard (he was always prepared with handouts for us). I love that he was so concerned with human interrelations and that he didn't use his class as a forum to hear himself speak - he cares what his students think. I also loved his assignments - they kept me very intellectually engaged. And...Peter's ass is indeed nice...
Peter is probaly the best english teacher I've ever had. He challenges you to think critically and creatively. He is a hard marker but a fair one. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get an A in his class. He makes assignments clear and he offers help if you ask him.
This guy is a trip (no pun intended). Don't be fooled by his psychoanalytical nature, turn his science project upside down. Dare to argue.
Very interesting and engaging. Work was relatively easy, but not mind-numbing. Seemed a little unapporachable at first, but the complete opposite by the end of the course.
He is a nice professor but a hard marker. What's nice about him is that he is always there to answer questions if you have any questions to ask. If your ENglish is not very good then DON'T TAKE HIM. Overall he is nice but challenging.
Difference b/t him and other instructors: a) he cares about the subject b) hes very reasonable c) you learn things from him that you can use everywhere else in life. To sum up his teachings in one word: Clarity. Cool guy & makes you interested in english (you realize these good things years after you take his course & you look back on it).
I doubt I'll ever have another prof. like him. He's special. No other teacher has given me such thorough feedback. He always shared specific examples of what I was doing well, and what I could improve on. He was open-minded, encouraged original, deep thinking, and was very easy to talk to. Lives in today's world - and critiques it. Know his worth.
Pretty nice prof...Clear on his materials, marking is decent. Makes you interested in what he teaches (Yes, interested in studying ENGLISH). He allows you give opinions and he's pretty open minded too. I recommend his classes
he had more ppl left in his classs at the end of it than otherz, so what this guy says about drops is rong. i registerd for his september class and it's already full. Nice guy.
Hot, smart and compassionate. He is very good at explaining things and providing feedback.
Great Teacher! Like discussion in class, but prepare to support your answer.
Being an English prof is not easy at all. Babiak actually lessened my hatred towards poetry - which more than 50 English teachers were not able to do to me before. He likes keeping things simple and easily comprehended. What he asks the most was, that you NEED solid evidence to support whatever argument you make, he really really looks into that.
He is actually quite hard. I have a B+ but I felt like I worked harder than what I got... but maybe not. Talk to him. Talk in class. If he knows you that will get you a few extra points
Peter is a very good and helpful English teacher. He actually makes English more interesting. He is a fair marker. You will have to work hard and listen to him in class and dont forget to take notes!!! Peter doesnt give lots of assignments. His final is predictable and reasonable. I would take his class again! One of the best professor in Langara!!!
Peter is such an awesome prof. - I cannot overemphasize how much I loved his class! He definitely helped me grow as a writer, and flex analytical muscles I didn't even know I had. I fully recommend any of his classes.
At first English was my most hated subject....i basically failed every grammar quiz he gave and he seems to mark the essays quite fairly. At the end, I became insterested in English..maybe because profs giving high marks once in a while gives u confidence
Smart and passionate prof. I loved his class!!! His assignments aren't that hard, so was the final.
Although there was a tremendous amount of busy work, I think that Peter was a great teacher and he was just trying to hammer his points home. He is creative in his teaching methods, and doesn't put up with idiots - which I love!
Great teacher. A lot of fun. Great class discussions and a fun project at the end. You have to go to class (or at least not skip more than 5) and you do need to read a fair bit. But in the end it's all worth it. Favourite english teacher of all time. : )
Fair and unbias. Good guy.
He's one of the best english teachers to get. He may be a bit mean sometimes when he strikes what you say and questions you "how" and "what evidence/support". He really doesn't tolerate late people and locks them out of the class. Overall, great guy, fair marker and one AWESOME TEACHER
Hes great! he helped me learn how to write and he got me interested in english! He's just the best!
he is a great teacher
Yah, he's hard some time, expects lot, but he helps you a LOT. And you can learn, if you want to. If you don't like him you didn't do well, or failed.
Great professor. Very smart guy, with good knowledge of material. He's really funny once you get to know him too!Marking is fair, though nearly illegible. Make sure you are specific in your writing and be able to back up your claims with examples. He loves examples! Part of the mark (for 1127) is for participation so speak up in class. Recommended.
HATE HIM HATE HIM HATE HIM
he very easy! great teacher...although his writing is IMPOSSIBLE to read. very easy marker as long as u hav evidence..HOW! HOW! HOW!!keep ur writing simple
I dont recommende him to anyone cause he is a taugh marker and he espects you to write like a professional writer.I did not like him at all . He gave me negative energy. BAD BAD BAD....
FANTASTIC Professor!!! Highly recommended for anyone who likes to challenge themselves. He is extremely passionate, blatantly forthright, and does not stand for ignorance! I absolutely LOVED him, and would take him for every English class if possible.
he is a hard marker if you just wanna pass english 1127 dont take him hi is absoulotly strict and he alwaya asks why? so if you cant answer why you probably gonna fail that class.I do not like him he has 100% negative waves
Best. Prof. Ever. If you didn't do well in this class, you obviously didn't listen at all. For the first time in my life I was forced to actually WORK for an English grade. He is hard, but if you take in what he says he will teach you how to write well. This past semester without him has been so boring, I can't wait to take him again.
It's interesting how most students who have left negative feedback about Babiak also have bad grammar and spelling. He's a good teacher, although his classes and material need to be taken seriously in order to do well. Recommended.
babiak is an awesome teacher . I would defaintly reccomend him. he tells you the essay questions that will be on the exam. So if you dont do well then you never went to class. TAKE HIS CLASS
Babiak is cool because hes real when he teaches! no sugurcoating and he is very honest with the english approach! if you go to class like a normal person and participate a bit you should do alright. Hes an awesome dude
I can say this without exaggerating: Peter is by far the best professor I've ever had. He is passionate about English, and is more than willing to help if you ask him questions. He can seem a bit intimidating (he is very frank and to the point), but he is a great teacher. Highly recommended.
i have had peter for 1127 and 1130 and i think that my essay writing has improved a great deal! he is an awesome teacher! he is really helpful to ask questions about any of the assignments. best of all his classes are interesting, i could listen to him talk for ever!
Babiak is extremely helpful and since I've been in his class my essay writing has drastically improved. He pushes you to your limits and always encourages you to elaborate. If you're prepared for class than you should do well.
He's the kind of teacher you just can't hate. He's very unbiased and neutral. He also allows a lot of class discussions, which make the class very entertaining.
I had his class my first term in langara. He was by far one of my most memorable teachers. He gets right to the point and is very helpful. He does ask a lot of why questions, but that helps in your essay development and allows you to look for the bigger picture. As with most good teachers, you ultimately have to put in the effort.
If found him a decent teacher, but tough. He was very critical of my class, being younger students. It's hard to sit there and obviously be the oldest one in the room (except for him), and still have to listen to his views on how immature students are. Sorry Peter, please realize that not all your students are 19!
I had him my first semester at Langara and although he was tough, he was fair. He didnt assign too much or too little and gives plenty of time for assignments that have a significant weight on overall grade.
He is a fair marker and extremely helpful. His class was very beneficial. If you are interested in succeeding in English then you should take his class; however, if you are not then don't bother.
I took Babiak's class at UBC back in 2000... the year I thought it was funny to be an obnoxious student. At the end of the course, Babiak said to me "I've never seen so much potential go to waste." If you're out there Mr. Babiak, I'd like to thank you and apologize. Your words made me change my attitude. I am grateful.
Dont pay attention to rants like the girls below. She writes like a 15 years old. He teaches you, hes one of the best, always interesting.
this teacher is the BEST TEACHER AT LANGARA hands down!!I took him twice...fair marker, very entertaining..messy writing but thats alrite. AWSOME guy...dont be late tho :| lol
Clarity, and simplicity. Other profs use fancy words to express themselves. Babiak is the opposite, with him your writing needs to be on the point. He hates writers that use "fillers" rather express all their thoughts with the least amount of words possible. 10x better than that Roman-whatever-his-name-is who also teaches English @ Langara.
Best teacher ever! English was not one of my strong subject. He helped me improve. If you don't like English, take his class. Totally recommend him.
Best teacher I've ever had. Hands down.
Passionate, articulate and always a treat to listen to--I enjoyed Peter's class immensely and am sad it's over. I learned something every class. It's great when your teacher is smarter than you.
Peter has a great way of communicating and getting his students to think and stretch. He taught me a lot about analytical thinking and being precise and on point in my writing. I would love to take another class with him!
You will learn a lot from him!
Take him if you LOVEEEE english as in L-O-V-E because he is a hard teacher. He's the hardest teacher for 1127 and is very strict on grammar. Also marks hard and picks on people to answer. He's a good teacher but prepare yourself because he'll make you work. REALLY work.
Peter's the kind of teacher that brings something to every class, and runs with it. Classroom discussions that aren't going to put you to sleep. This is a good thing, I assure you. Take his 2237 class if it's offered again, you won't be disappointed. However, make sure analytical essays, semantics and syntax are strong points.
i was VERY intimidated by his straight-forwrdness at 1st bt i soon grew2love him n the class!he's not easy,bt is a fair marker.u can't woo him by writing in big fancy wrds,u gotta make sense,he reads word by word.downright encourages originality!his dishevelled appearance makes him strangly cute!funny guy 2!his wife's sure a lucky lady:)!RECOMMEND!
Peter is so attractive. I agree, his wife and kids are lucky! Mm, not super difficult.Very funny guy, participation will benefit you and it keeps you awake! Highly recommended. Love his class.
Peter is the Best Guy .You learn something very useful in his class right from day one. He is an A+ teacher.Goodluck
As an ESL student, I probably should have taken an easier teacher for 1127, but Peter really benefits not only on writing skills but also my attitudes toward hardness. He tries to push each student to their limit and therefore stimulates their potentials. I never regret that I took his course last Fall.
He's a very fun person, but his classes are so boring he goes off topic a lot that has nothing to do with the course. All his notes are online so there is really no point in going at all. But do go for the classes when he is having a quiz.
Be prepared to talk in class, but if you want to learn he will get you there. I wanted a class where we read and discussed literature: this is not what he does. However I have already improved and he forces it out of you. This WILL improve your English skills. PS, take Phil 1104 with Wayne Henry too, he will teach you a lot.
he's fun and i love his classes, but he was off sick for weeks, it's still a good class but something happened when he was gone. It's not the same, peter looks sad. I want to hug him better.
Peter is an amazing teacher with a brilliant mind. I've learned more from him than any other teacher in my life. He gets people to think, and often ends up giving (strange/funny) advice on life. Not really for the timid, or shy as he can be intimidating, and likes to put people on the spot A LOT - which usually ends up embarrassing most people.
Peter doesn't look sad. That's the way he always looks. He's good though. One of the better instructors at Langara.
An amazing prof! He has tremendous knowledge and an incredible teaching style. I learned so much from his course. He is very good at presenting information. His course is NOT easy and I wouldn't recommend it for people who stuggle with grammar problems because you should learn that in earlier English classes, but it is more than worth taking.
Awesome lectures, urges u to participate, very clear expectations, high marks were given to the class, easy going, deadline dates negotiable, short quizzes on novels that u can retake, gives essay q's in advance. Favourite eng prof and I've had Isaak, budra, ball and Webb. Great novels!
exactly when I would say that his bust ups over bad essay writers is totally great, someone said the complete oppositite. Why take his class if you cant take criticism dude?!
Peter is a fantastic prof. His class is difficult, especially coming straight from high school, but manageable if you do the work and speak up in class. He is caustic and condescending but that's all part of his charm. He genuinely wants students to succeed, so if you're having problems just talk to him. He's never boring, and I loved his class!
In terms of writing essays and paragraphs, Peter loves details which makes him a hard marker. He wants his students to be aggressive. Although, the reading materials he gave us were very interesting. How i view the world is different now. Btw, he's charming and his smile is very attractive which is something to look forward to going to class
My second class with him!Waited for one whole year 2 get in after the first but the wait was worth it!altho it's not an easy class,u learn a lot from him!not just about writing an articulated essay but also abt deep philosophical content!smart & funny!he picks on u if u dont speak up tho,but is REALLY helpful if u approach him for help!Il miss him!
Great teacher! classes are super interesting. ESL students or anyone with bad grammar might want to avoid his classes. Definitely cant B.S on your essay. we covered prose (2 novels), poetry (14 poems) and film. 2 in class essays and about 3 take home essays. there's also a group movie project. overall a very fun class. take his class if you can! :)
Peter is a fantastic prof. i learned many things in his class and his class is fun so you won't fall sleep. He really cares about his students HINT: if you are struggling (because his class isn't really easy) go see him in his office hours and ask for help, then he will know that you are trying, besides he is approachable and helpful as well, Good
1. AVOID if your grammar is not good. You will struggle to pass. 2. His morning classes are very interesting and fun 3. He tends to smack papers on a table. I don't know if it's a habit or a temper. 4. Peter is attractive for a middle aged man. He looks like John Rhys Meyers. 5. He Has a very bad writing.
Excellent teacher. He is the type of teacher that you would see in a movie. He is very interesting and he really provokes you to think. He taught us how to write with baby steps which leads you to huge improvements. Every lecture was interesting and you always learn something about life or academics from him. Peter is inspirational!
If you want an easy teacher or if you have bad grammer, avoid him. If you want to learn how to write a decent paper, hunt him down and take his class. Don't expect to have it easy, even with attempting to decipher his writing. It is however a fun class even if it was in the morning.
I have to say it you guys; Peter is NOT strict about grammar. He is an ENGLISH teacher!Hello People,It's ENGLISH!Peter brings a welcomed combination of intellectual stimulation and "street cred". If you think his class is hard...YOU are the one that needs work. Harsh? yes. True? yes.All he wants is authentic ideas, and proper grammar. If that's too
Cont'd...if that's asking too much...you need to rethink your University education. You need to know the rules before you break them.Just out of highschool or not, you should know how to use a comma and spell. I need the reminders, and so do you.
He's pretty great really. I mean it's english so it's not riveting but he forays into law and philosophy and economics and history and, well, you feel you leanr useful bits, not just useless stuff. I think back on his class. He's cool. Messy handwriting and he drinks redbull. The 2 girls next to me had a total hard on for him to.
He's not so special. If you can just keep it simple and repeat 'for example' and 'in other words' in your essays, then you'll be great. But don't expect any ground-breaking fountain of knowledge. His focus is almost entirely on analysis and you'll have to do a film project in groups.
Peter's not the best English prof. He doesn't teach a thing about writing essays, but focuses mainly on ideas. He doesn't seem to care very much about structure/grammar. He goes off topic a lot in class, and though it's interesting, you don't actually learn anything. He's also pretty disorganized. He's cool but should be teaching something else?
Give me a brake. Peter focuses almost obsessively on structure and grammar, in the essays and in the novels we read! Look if there's a complaint I have about him is that sometimes he goes into lecture talk for half the glass. He gets seriosly excited when he'sgoing on about grammar and structure! It can be boring, but hey I learned from him.
Fun. Smart. Not hard to sit watching and lisening to for two hours. I like him already. I'll love him if I get a good grade! He talks to us not at us.
TAKE HIS CLASS.
It is easy to get a good grade in his class as long as you back up your analysis. However, I strongly dislike Peter. He doesn't teach anything about literature, he just talks about things that he's interested in and are irrelevant. He is shockingly rude and condescending and has no respect for his students. He seems to enjoy knocking others down
I was gonna say that the last class ws totally awesome, I love this man. He is enspiring and me makes me want o go to class!!! Thanks peter
I understand why some ppl don't like Peter, but I completely disagree with them. He is extremely intelligent and interesting, and he will teach you more than you thought possible -if you let him. Talking to him outside of class is beneficial. He's been teaching for a long time so he may seem crass, but he is a lovely man and excellent instructor.
P. Babiak comes across strong at first, some may even be offended, however he will tell you exactly what he is looking for to recieve a good grade. If you pay attention in class you will recieve a high grade. Dispite his iracible and cranky demeanor, Babiak recieves high points as a teacher. He might even make you laugh!
I found his class very interesting and engaging. Peter is very clear as to what he wants from his students and tells you what essay prompt you will have on an exam. However, you must try hard because he is a difficult marker. I would recommend him if you want to enjoy english class and improve your writing at the expense of your GPA.
I loved Peter Babiak. He taught me all of the flaws in English writing and definitely FORCED me to learn in his class. i took two of his classes because it was just so difficult for me to choose a different prof. He has a lot of experience in this field and trust me you will not fall asleep in his lectures (as he will not let you!) Highly recommend
I still think back on his classes although I only got a B- in both coz he's not easy, but at the same time so very intellectually stimulating!has fresh ideas,a wicked sarcastic sense of humor, and comes across to be very intimidating at first, but if you can survive the first day,YOU'LL LEARN A LOT!I still try to write essays with him in my mind!
Peter was awesome. Show up to class on time- go ask for help when needed, and just don't be an idiot. He's sarcastic, but hilarious, and uses different ways of getting the points across- media, videos, etc. He is EXTREMELY flexible with due dates which was amazing. A fabulous teacher!
totally worth taking his class. best english teacher EVER. Take his class.
Peter is one of the BEST Teachers i've had at langara, Take his Class because you will actually LEARN how to write Effectively!!! He's Challenging, but he is interesting to listen to and keeps you on the edge of your seat... Every Teacher should be like this guy... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!
This guy is a cock, great professor
Peter is the man! SOO helpful. Always willing to help. Very clear, very funny, very easy going, very smart, very cool, very everything. TAKE ENGLISH WITH HIM. YOU WILL LOVE IT. I USED TO HATE POETRY, NOT THAT MUCH ANYMORE! AWESOME TEACHER!!!!
He is a super hard marker. I am a straight A student and I am having a very tough time pulling A's in his class. He acts like a jerk and is pretty condescending. He's really smart, I think he just dislikes "dumb" students. That said he is really helpful if you talk to him in his office hours. He's super straight and to the point as well.
Peter is a wonderful professor and you can definitely learn a lot from him. He is very smart and passionate about English. He can be a bit intimidating in class be sure to talk to him in his office, he is very helpful and patient. I was never bored in his class and learned a lot from him. I hope I get the opportunity to learn from him again.
I used to find English so easy, it was almost boring. Peter changed that - he threw my "A" right out the door and actually made me THINK. He is sarcastic and funny and it is worth attending class. He may be intimidating at times but if you think critically and always explain your thesis logically, the effort will pay off.
Peter is an amazing teacher.. He actually made me think in this class! Before this, I thought I had an amazing knowledge of English, but after going through this course, I see that I was in "a cave" (reference to anyone who was in his class, haha) Best English teacher I've ever had.
The best Professor I've ever had.Peter makes it clear as to what he wants to see.If you make your thesis clear, follow his grammar rules and do the readings, you will get a good grade, guaranteed. He is hilarious and slightly intimidating but very informative when you seek help. Not an easy prof nor class, but put in the work and you will do well.
I am surprised I even pulled off a B-. His expectations seemed really high so I worked really hard in this class. Although his class is difficult he is very clear in what he wants. He will show good and bad examples and go over everything thoroughly. He seems intimidating but he's a great professor. Definitely LEARNED in an english class for once.
Peter is an extremely knowledgable and helpful professor who wants students to succeed. He provides all the tools and support and is very clear. This is by far the most practical and useful english class I've ever taken.
Prepare to work your ass off if you want an A. But also, you will get very clear instructions of expectations, and lots of help if you go to office hours. Babiak was great, I learned a lot and I really like him as a person. He's got a dry, dark sense of humour and his classes were fun
Peter was an awesome prof! Although he might seem intimidating at first, he's actually a pretty funny guy. I learned a lot from his class. He spent a lot of time showing previous students' work, good and bad examples. A few essays, quizzes, a film project, and a final exam. Fair marker. Attendance is mandatory.
Amazing Professor. Completely changes how you'll see literature. Peter can seem intimidating but he's just direct and blunt. Great sense of humour. Always available for help. OFFICE HOURS, OFFICE HOURS, OFFICE HOURS! Speak up in class, really, it's worth marks. Take his class, you will learn loads.
He may be intimidating, but you will learn a lot from him. My only 8:30 class but he kept me interested the entire time. Don't be afraid to ask for help, use the office hours to go over your homework/essays!Difficult but fair marking. If you're decent at English then I fully recommend, but be prepared to work hard. It will pay off!
I could not have asked for a better teacher in my first year at Langara. Peter challenged me as a reader and writer, forcing me to slow down and concentrate on WHY words are written on the page. I worked very hard in this class, read all the material and went in during office hours and received an A-.
Awesome prof, guides you all the way, can be lenient and very humorous
English is not at all my subject, but he made class incredibly entertaining. Intimidating but great, he's not as mean as he sounds.
Loved his class. It went by far too fast.
I liked Peter, but he rambles and gets sidetracked a bit- interesting but not necessarily useful for passing the class. I could never tell what I was really supposed to be learning, because the readings and the lectures could be quite different, both were extensive, and he sometimes tested on really specific details from both, which sucked.
GREAT TEACHER, A LITTLE INTIMIDATING AND DIFFICULT BUT YOU WILL LEARN WELL.
His classes are uniquely interesting. He definitely comes off as being the "pissed off father" type and can seem intimidating, but taking a class with him is worth the trouble. Marks hard but helps you improve. Office hour sessions are amazing with him. He got me to start watching Mad Men (which became my favourite tv show). 3 him2death
He is the best prof for English! He really engages students and wants everyone to do well. He makes English enjoyable, especially in the summer.
Best. English. Professor. Ever. He grades really hard, but if you work hard, you'll do fine. Don't take any other professor at Langara.
You have to work very hard to survive in this class!
He sometimes has this kind of in your face attitude and can be rude towards people who don't have perfect grammar and spelling. But, he does want to help, if you attend and participate in class you'll probably do very well. He's also very available to look over papers, he really cares and will put in the work to support you if you talk to him.
Peter is a great prof! You can tell he is really passionate about linguistics when he talks, and it makes class so much more interesting. He makes the class interesting and all of the readings are discussed in class and uploaded online so if you're like me and don't read, it's great. He was such an easy marker on the midterm and papers! TAKE HIM
if you're looking to get an easy good grade, he is not the one. peter assigned LOTS of readings, I found his class a bit overwhelming for that reason. His grading criteria was not very clear either, I went to the learning center and learned more than in his class. I felt like his class was more of an area for discussion rather than learning.
Man oh man, this guy is a tough grader. He's great at explaining and seems passionate about what he teaches but the low grade is killing me. It's unfortunate when you have a good prof who is easy to follow but backstabs you with poor grades no matter how hard you try. I got a higher mark in my calc class.
Babs is an awesome prof. He just wants you to become a better writer. He lays out very clearly what is expected from students and provides examples of what to do and what not to do. He can be really funny when he is dissecting a paragraph. There is some reading, lots of writing. I can honestly say my writing improved greatly in his class. Awesome.
Peter comes across as intimidating but he is very clear on what he expects from his assignments. If you follow his guidelines, you will be alright. He really gets into every single sentence and gets you to think exactly why you are writing it. My writing has improved greatly after being in his class. There are a lot of little assignments.
seems like your stereotypical prof and is very passionate about what he does.
Loved him - he was amazing. Very open-minded, very respectful. SUPER PROF. He is extremely smart - but never lords it over his students, nor is he ever haughty. I think he is probably one of the best profs at Langara.
A solid professor IF you have somewhat of a good grasp with the english language. If youre looking for an easy A, you're looking in the wrong place. As long as you keep up with the readings and ask for help when needed, it shouldn't be too hard to achieve the marks you want. His lectures are extremely helpful, and my writing has definitely improved
I took two English courses with Peter and he was amazing. He is a hard marker but his class is very interesting and he truly helps during office hours. I would 10/10 take another class with him
Peter is great he is very accessible outside of the classroom & cares a lot bout his students. He is very passionate about linguistics. There is A LOT to read. Peter goes over all of the readings in class so that helps too. The only real flaw is that his handwriting is messy so you'll have to speak to him about your mark after class.
I found Peter to be really disrespectful towards students. Really unapproachable. Biased towards ESL students and students having difficulty understanding course material. Rambled too much about unrelated ideas and notes were atrocious, sloppy, and unhelpful. Should not be teaching first year courses.
Peter is a good professor at teaching. But if you want a good grade without effort, he might not be the best choice. If you are willing to learn, improve or challenge yourself, you will enjoy his classes. Make the best of use of his office hours. BTW, his handwriting is challenging to read, but he will help you define your weaknesses.
Peter is very talented. I took my first year english course with him and I Learned how to critically analyze text. Although his notes are messy and unorganized, his in-class speeches and lectures are important and crucial to understanding and learning. He engages with students, and his teaching style is purely based on student's weaknesses.
Really enjoyed his class even though it was 8:30 on Monday during the summer. You can tell he's really smart and sometimes can be intimidating, but use his office hours to your advantage. Very understanding and respectful, but a tough marker. Never worked so hard for a B+.
Disorganized, does not know how to use a computer. Lectures can be interesting but again, disorganized and unstructured. He also assigns waaaayy too much homework. Group projects, essays, weekly homework, "creative projects". Way too much Pete...
Difficult grader on essays but he gives some room to make up for it with participation marks and grammar quizzes. He has a lot of office hours and really helps improve your writing. You really learn how to improve your writing but you definitely have to work for it.
Peter knows his stuff and is super helpful. can be intimidating and uses mylangara and the dreaded "file" instead of d2l, this abomination is super long, confusing and gross. But peter is awesome in every other way. he fostered a new appreciation for art, poetry and film in me
Peter is very disorganized but his lectures were quite interesting. Get ready to do a lot of work but learn a lot! Peter is very understanding and approachable and teaches with passion and authority.
Great and very interesting lectures but can get off topic at times. Lots of reading and lots of notes to take but he posts everything online for you as well.
Peter is really there to better your writing and make you think about literature metaphorically, literally and philosophically. He can be a hard marker, but if you edit your work and work on it a week prior you should be fine, I did my hw the night before so. Really nice and funny, participate aswell it's 10 percent of your grade!
Peter is a serious prof who tries to help his students pass the course. Whether or not the student does good is up to the student. Go see him if you have any questions and he'll definitely try to help. Although he is intimidating because of how direct he is, as long as he understands how you word your question, you'll get helpful answers.
Peter is an amazing prof, not sure why his ratings aren't good. He makes his criteria very clear from day one and is extremely helpful if you need help with your writing. Would definitely take another English class with Peter!
Peter is an excellent english professor. He may seem daunting, but he is knowledgeable and extremely caring about his students. It is clear he wants his students to see his students succeed, both in this course and in life. He is always available for his students and he is truly a remarkable professor. I highly recommend Peter as an instructor.
I was dreading having to take a literature course because I expected it to be boring... Peter actually made this class interesting & relevant & I surprisingly enjoyed it. He is a tough grader, but his instructions are clear so if you follow them you will do well. Take advantage of his office hours as he is happy to help students who are struggling.
Best English teacher I have ever had. I improved my writing more in this course than I had in probably all of my years previously. He chooses material that makes students think, and pushes everyone to do so. That said, it is not an easy class for people looking to coast. You will learn more in this class than others, but you must put in effort.
Many homework, true, but many inspiring lectures, too. He could teach everywhere: Babiak is one of the best English professors in British Columbia, believe me. He knows what he is talking about: choose his courses with no fear. Worth it.
I felt like he is very disorganized and unclear with his instruction, but his lectures are quite fun. He appears grumpy and unapproachable, but he is actually quite nice when you do go to see him for questions. He is a very tough marker and I would only recommend him if you want a challenge.
Although Peter is very nice outside of class, he is quite an intimidating professor during lectures. Nobody in the class really understood the material but he did warn us in the beginning that this class was not a GPA booster. There are two quizzes, one midterm, one group project, one individual project, and a final. Peter appreciates creativity.
Not clear in what he expects. Quit unorganized in general. Course has textbooks, which you are expected to read on your own. He talks a lot with no clear goal. Many of us students concluded that this should be an online course. Overall, not a pleasent experience. I did fine because I enjoy the material, but many others did not becaseu of the above.
Toughest grader but the best instructor you can find at the English Department of Langara. Go see him to ask questions. without it, I must have failed the course.
Peter used great material and topics to examine in his class. He is a bit intimidating but I highly encourage his office hours as he gives great advice. Although he says it is not a grammar course, he focusses on grammar and marks grammatical mistakes heavily. His work was bearable but he was a very tough marker. Make sure not to procrastinate!
I had Peter for fall 2020 online because of covid. At the beginning of the term he was rude and arrogant and told us most of us will fail. Towards the end of the semester he began to emphasize more with the students(hardly). He was VERY disorganized throughout the whole semester. Course consists of 10 hw, 5 essays, 7 quizzes, and final exam.
His class is totally designed for the students "who major is literature". If your major is not literature, you will have a painful time learning literature theories which are very unuseful for your future. For "INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS", you definitely will very pained if you take his class. His feedbacks are really hurtful for everyone's essays.
Very insightful and explicit in what you need to improve on. English is no longer some meaningless BS crap, I am "enlightened". I will never forget this class. Class material was dystopian-themed and was all very engaging. Hands down the best professor. If you disagree, you're just wrong and should feel bad for being so obviously wrong.
Peter is a university professor who belongs teaching in a university and not 1st-year college courses. Peter lives by a code and unless you come into his class with good English and writing skills then you will be crucified. Peter is very good if you are at a level where he can help you and it's clear he is passionate about what he does.
I had Peter during the fall 2020 sem (online) I was honestly so scared to take this class because English wasn't my strongest subject but Peter was really helpful and he gave great advise on things I could improve on! I also definitely took advantage of his office hours (went to pretty much all of it LOL) the class was 100% worth the challenge :)
Peter is generally a good professor. The only problem I had with this class (a lot of people in the class can probably agree as well) is that a lot of the assigned work and his lecture notes are really disorganized; you don't know when things are due until maybe 2 classes before and you have to cram everything before it's due.
There is a LOT of homework in this class, but it all ultimately helps you become a better writer. Peter is an amazing teacher because you can tell he really wants you to succeed. He has a way of explaining things that is easy to understand. He is always available to answer questions, and can give you an extension if you need one.
he really helped improving my english essays a lot!
a really good prof BUT you have to read and do all the homework assignments. he gives good feedback but his writing is super messy so you have to ask him to clarify. he can be blunt and a bit short but he's never mean. hes a tough grader and you cant dispute your grade. helped improve my writing a lot
Awesome teacher! Took 1130 for nursing and ended up learning a lot! Be sure you stay on his good side. As long as you respect him and his class, he's not as intimidating. Go. To. His. Office. Hours. He has them almost every day if you either don't understand smth or want another opinion on what you'll be writing about, he's there and happy to help!
He is an amazing teacher. One can tell he really wants his students to succeed. I have a difficult time with grammar since English is not my first language. However, this course has certainly helped me to improve. The office hours he holds are very helpful, so please do attend them. You will definitely see improvements if you put in the hard work.
Peter is a great professor. He is a tough grader but you will learn A LOT in his class. He might seem rude but is very sweet and genuinely cares about his students. He brought us pizzas and cookies often and made sure we had some breakfast (brought us muffins) before exam. Haha, a caring prof!! Make sure you follow the feedbacks to do better.
He's a Beauty, handwriting is awful though.
-Be prepared to return to the fundamentals of basic sentence structure because that takes up a big chunk in terms of his marking. -There will be a lot of essays, but Peter makes sure to prepare you for those about a week before each essay. - Socialize and make RELIABLE friends ,because a big chunk of your grade will rely on a film group project.
Peter was an awesome prof and his lectures were really funny. Great guy and I suggest taking his class
He's a good prof and genuinely wants his students to do well. Gives good feedback. He talks a lot and assigns a lot of reading that you'll need to know for tests and papers. I would recommend him for any English class!
Peter is passionate about education and cares about his students. He is entertaining, interesting, kind, and thoughtful. He hands out photocopies of chapters from a textbook so his students can save money. Take advantage of his help as he is more than willing to answer any questions during office hours or via email.
Good prof but entire semester was about metaphors instead of academic writing. Course material and assignments were difficult and stressful. Very helpful during office hours. Mixes up due dates sometimes but you can tell he likes teaching and wants the best for his students.
Peter is an amazing professor, originally took this course for credit but came out with respect and interest in this field. He can be a "tough" marker but he is very clear and fair about his grading and as long as you ACTUALLY read and reflect on his handouts and lectures you will have a great time in his course. Very engaging lectures!
If you're an english major, take this class. He's very picky on your papers and getting A's will take a miracle. However, he does provide good feedback and his lectures aren't too bad.
He wants you to incorporate a close reading of a short story with research from a book and an academic discipline, like psychology, in 1500 words. He wants you to do this without making the essay too broad, but these guidelines make you go broad. He assumes you know exactly how to not do this. These english profs have huge undeserved egos.
You can tell Peter knows exactly what he's talking about and he is passionate too. In the beginning I found his class difficult because I didn't know what to expect. He's a tough grader but he's always willing to give extra feedback and explain the guidelines. I enjoyed his class overall.
Professor Babiak is tough but fair. His class focuses on the fundamentals and requires a lot of essays, but he provides ample preparation. The group film project is challenging but rewarding. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for my study prep.
I really liked Peter, he is a really tough grader and it's almost impossible to get an A in his class. Overall, his lectures are very entertaining for some reason; his opinions get you interested in what he's saying. Also participation is not necessary but he asks lots of questions! You also do LOTS of reading.
Great professor- he is very clear about what needs to be done, how to do it, and everything else you'll need to know. It's not hard to get a good mark you just need to keep up with the readings and put effort into your work. He knows what he's doing and will help you with anything you're struggling with.
I and many peers felt was quite tough on marking. If you're taking this class as smo who hates English and just needs the credits, I'd choose another prof. However, this is not to shame Peter, he is as blunt as can be, considers a C a good mark and brings snacks! Take if you genuinely want to become better and are not scared of an honest opinion.
If you're looking for an easy GPA booster, Linguistics is not for you. But, if you're looking to *learn* things, and have fun discussions - take this class! Peter gives great advice on how to improve your writing and has fun assignments. The exams are difficult, but the creative projects give good marks. This class will grow you as a student.
Peter gives wonderful feedback, and provides tools to improve your writing that most professors don't give. Whether you're an english language wiz or you struggle with grammar, he will give you really useful feedback. It is hard to read his handwriting, but he's happy to explain in office hours and you kind of get used to it by the end of the sem.
Peter seems intimidating in lectures but is quite approachable outside of class. He was a tough grader at times but he gives clear and very helpful feedback on how you can improve. He was able to clearly explain a lot of the core concepts of the readings in his lecture.
He is NECCECARILY strict.
The course material was engaging, but the professor's attitude caused unnecessary stress.
He is the toughest marker I've ever met. I visited him during his office hours and writing center for multiple times. I spent so much time on the assignments but kept receiving C. You have to write 6 paragraphs in 2 hours for final exam. I would strongly recommend choosing other profs if you can.
He seems intimidating but he is actually quite friendly, also his hand writing is hard to read but you can just ask him to elaborate and he will. He is quite engaging to listen. He marks harsh but I will say his class helped me in my other english classes and he improved my writing! Very clear instructions. Overall nice prof! :)
Peter Babiak has a good, albiet eccentric, way of teaching. Being in his class brings me back to being a kid at Christmas Dinner listening to my Dad talk about whatever events were happening at the time. He is a bit of a tough marker, he's definitely animated, but he is a chill teacher who does truly want to see his students succeed. tldr: good.
If you take this class and put bare minimum effort into it you will come out of this class a significantly better writer. Don't miss class and participate and you will do well.
Caring and grades harshly. More lenient on phones now. A lot of take-home homework, gives useful feedback. I do like writing essays, and there are so many essays to be written. There was a group project but they don't really count that much compared to essays 1-5. Not an easy A, but would def recommend for improving your writing.
