He's tall and difficult.
very hard to follow...talks to students as if they all had phd's
Not very good at explaining key ideas. He talks at a level that is near immpossible for the average chem student to understand. Very frustrating
An bad prof. DO NOT TAKE! He gets pleasure out of showing off how much he knows about a subject he has studied most of his life to people who never have.
The only way to understand him is if you stand out in left field right beside him.
very funny guy to watch, but talks too much about not important topics
Very Goofy teacher... Gets so into explaining things that i dont even know if he understands whats goin on... 6'10 bundle of ADHD energy and couldnt anwser a question if he had to.
A VERY VERY BAD TEACHER! I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY HE IS STILL TEACHING. HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH AND HE IS OFTEN OFF THE SUBJECT EVERYTIME YOU ASK HIM QUESTIONS! DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE!!!!
ok guy, but good luck getting an answer from him... his answers are even over his head and he is 6'5"
Good teacher. Lots of information covered. If you put in the effort and work, you'll do fine. Most bad reviews were probably from lazy students
Obscure. Rambles on about stuff he's interested in incessantly but covers little of what's in the book, which is what he grades you on. Read the book and you'll do alright. He's a relatively easy grader. Makes my head hurt on a daily basis.
Reads directly from book, explains nothing. When you ask for help he pushes you away. Yoo smart to be teaching.
Tricky and vague...never know what to expect on the exams.
Very random, when you ask him a question he will ramble for 30 minutes and leave you with your question unanswered reads straight from the book so going to class is useless
If you take Balanda and you don't already know the subject you're done for. Very rude, won't lift a finger to help you so don't ask any favors. Most awful teacher I have ever had.
He digresses too much during lecture.. he's impossible to follow.
A quote from Professor Asmond-" If you wana know what time it is ask me, if you wana know how to build the clock ask Balanda." this guy cant answer questions but people just dont study. Hes really not that bad.
hard to follow. he goes around questions when asked because he doesn't know the answer and too bullheaded to tell you. i got b- and this was my second time taking the course
friendly guy, but most of the time I don't think he knows what the hell he's talking about
Hes hard as hell. Out to fail everyone, and everyones good comments are BS, you can work hard, he only passes a few students, to only say not everyone fails,(thats BS) Have fun in Hell, with Satan students, if you take this course!P.S, Don't cry loudly!
HORRIBLE!!!!!
He can not teach, put him back in the laboratory making chemicals or something. Seriously, he is a bad teacher. He knows chemistry very well, but presents it to the class horribly. He jumps from subject to subject, and goes on and on about the stupidest things. Try not to take him 4 class or lab
He is smart, but intelligent people cannot teach!Yes, he sucks!!! Yes, a very nice person if you catch him at the right time. otherwise, watch out! he'll just make you feel soooo stupid..and then apolgize!
Worst Teacher I have ever had in my life... Please dont take him for any class. He doesnt know how to teach!!. Assumes that his students know everything (not knowing tht they r comin to school to learn)
worst lab teacher ever, he expects you to know everything and when you don't he won't help
Don't take Balanda for CHEM lab for Weaver he sucks, he will make you do things that Weaver's lab doesn't have to. He talks for days. And you will be in lab the whole two hours when you should be there for 20 mins. He's a nice guy, not a fun teacher. You will walk out of lab pissed off everyday1
Organic chemistry is hard, there is a lot of material to cover, but Balanda wasn't as bad as these ratings make it seem. He allowed us to take the second test home and redo it for extra credit after everyone bombed it, so he's not out to fail everyone.
Ok so all I had him for was lab, and it made that the worst prat of my day. I could not stand the guy. If you ask him a question he goes into a 20minute spiel about something totally irrelevant and then never answers what you ask. The guy is impossible.
Absolutely horrible! He was a nice enough guy, but couldn't teach to save his life! The ongoing joke was that he got his degree from Sally Struthers.
What an ****. If you have this teacher, I feel your pain.
Balanda is awesome and not the person these ratings make him. Sure, if u ask him a question he goes off on a 20 min story time, but c'mon, theres worse things. It can be humorous and entertaining. U will never fall asleep in his class, hes goofy and very interactive. Biochem is hard, but dont blame him.
Now I thought that Balanda resembeled Bill Nye the science guy of Chemistry. He can talk your ear off, but he is helpful. Don't make plans for right after a lab with him though, cause he may make you late...we spent all if not more then required time in lab. I'd say he was overall good!!!
eagon is a good guy. i got a D in his class but it was my own fualt not his.
He's hard to understand since he does tend to ramble off on things. But get to know him and read the textbook, and you will do just fine! Tests are fairly hard but he is always willing to help!
Take this guy, he never makes Chem boring, hes always running around the room trying to explain something, test are hard but if you read your fine!!!
not a very good teacher classes are confusing
He is a really good teacher. You have to do a lot of work on your own. He explains things well as long as you don't get lost in his "side comments". If you go to his office he explains things even better. Don't be intimidated by him. If you need help get help!!

A terrible teacher. He is totally not prepared for class. He teaches above the students, not to the students! He takes is tests from the book, why not be creative and make up your own? Do not take him!
My favorite teacher of all time! He is entertaining and can relate to students. He may be too smart for his own good. His labs however are a disaster, but he is hilarious
He always has a good story to tell and is never in a bad mood. he is the****. hes been to almost every college in the US. He goes off on tangents sometimes but they do help out. His tests are really easy if you pay attention. Hes a 7 foot tall teddy bear. The only time you have to do a lot of work is for owl which is easy.
He is my favorite teacher I have ever had, has great stories and can sit and talk to anyone. A very intelligent man that gives you an enormous amount of information for real world application. (and for the person below, you mean you don't want to know where he is testing you from and he should make stuff up that you've never seen?)
FUN EXCITING GUY, just talks around in a circle so you get lost easily. The mcmurry chem book is very clear. do all his old exams online! HE USES SAME FORMAT and quite a lot of the same question! i am organic chem illiterate but with his practice test it was easy! final exam is a b%tch! but somehow i passed with a B! put effort in practice test!
I liked him as a teacher, he gave realistic results in the beginning. He was willing to help if you asked for it. Curves at the end. If you don't get it look in the book, especially for the OWL, mechanisms are right in there.
It's like being taught orgo by Bill Nye the science guy. He's a really fun professor. Can be hard to follow at times since he takes random trains of thought a little too far, but he realizes it and is trying to improve. His enthusiasm for chemistry makes the information that much more interesting. I loved his class so much!
He is an entertaining guy who is not the best teacher, but you have to do the online book work and read the book, which helps you learn a lot if that is your style. tests are kind of hard, but you can review old exams.he curves at the end. probably had an actual 90 or less percentage and got an A. Not a horrible teacher, not the best though.
He seems to be a nice guy, but he doesn't explain what he is teaching. He just shows a bunch of reactions and expects you to understand why he did it that way. It's rough, but the book will teach it to you if you read each chapter word for word. Avoid if possible, otherwise, be ready to teach yourself!
Great teacher if you don't mind that you never can find out your grade unless you go see him on his office hours, is totally unprepared, changes due dates all the time so you never know when work is due until the day of, and is hard to follow in lecture. Also when you e-mail him bout his lack of organization he gets mad and lectures the class on it
This class had been a huge disappointment. He doesn't actually teach. He just shows a bunch of reactions and expects you to get it. His tests are extremely hard and covers material that hasn't been taught, w/o informing us it will be on there. I feel like I completely wasted my money. Avoid at all costs, unless you like teaching yourself...
Where to being!? Balanda is interesting, to say the least. And not in a good way. His exams are easy, only because you can memorize the questions and answers to his previous exams. If you read the book on your own and do the OWL homework, you should be fine. Lab is ridiculously long, found my self spending 3 hours every week, and sometimes even 4!
He is the worst professor I've ever had at fsu. Completely unorganized and unprepared for classes. You can never tell you your grade. It was impossible to tell when anything was due until the day of. Avoid! If I could rate him a 0 I would
Phenomenal professor. He is enthusiastic, energetic, very knowledgeable. When I went to his office hours he was extremely helpful. Be prepared to work hard and ask questions and work. Hope to take him again!
Great guy who is interesting to listen to, but a lot of what he talks about in class doesn't pertain to what shows up on the exams. But, you can do pretty well on tests by reading the book and doing the two or three practice tests he gives you. There's also lots of cushion points in online homework and lab. He curves exams and the class. Recommend!
He's a great guy, but really goofy. I had fun in his class but it's impossible to take notes because he talks about a lot of stuff that doesn't matter. He's willing to help you if you go to his office hours. Definitely had to put forth more effort than other classes, but it is a harder subject.
He's a good guy but he's a horrible teacher. He frequently rambles about things that don't matter, including outdated methods of doing reactions. Also he made us do two lab presentations that were pointless so be prepared for that. His instructions were so old that said to use a floppy disk...
Not bad looking for 50+ year old, just saying. Doesn't do much teaching, but online homework and curves saved my grade. Tests are multiple choice, enough work will get you an A. TIME CONSUMING course, wouldn't recommend trying to take it with other hard classes.
His labs are a minimum of 3 hours per week. Many times I found myself there for 4 hours just to get our stuff done. The lab research projects are ridiculous. He throws reactions at you and expects you to be able to analyze and apply them immediately. And his tests are multiple choice, but insane. Have fun.
A really nice guy but not much guidence when it comes to what is going to be on the tests. He gives out online homework every day and extra credit before each test. Study the practice tests, go through the power points and watch the kahn academy videos also take notes during class
It's true what they say: DrBalanda is a great person and a brilliant chemist, but not the best of teachers. He tries really hard to explain the material, but it just doesn't click for a lot of people. But his resources are great! He lists links to Khan Academy videos for almost every topic, follows the schedule to a T, & posts old tests to review.
Good professor, but talks himself in circles more than once every lecture. Its easy for him to get distracted but is a funny guy. Even other professors have commented on how many students struggle in this class, so make sure you go to every lab, do well on homework, and go to lecture!
Dr. Balanda is a terrible lecturer. Consistently off topic and has serious issues keeping to t syllabus. He also is unreceptive to student feed back and considers himself God in his own classroom, that is to say, anything he says, goes. He does not feel that his syllabus is a contract with his students. He does not respond to e-mail or phone.
It is well known throughout the program that this is the hardest class of the entire bachelors program, mostly because he is so bad at his job. Lectures go very in depth and often get off track making you more confused, and the homework never stops. On the first day he literally said we would hate him by the end the the semester.
Favorite prof my freshman year (had Orgo 321322). I loved his lectures. Homework isn't too bad, he offers extra credit which is way harder than his exams, but if you do it you'll be prepared. Very fair exams. Do the reading, and LOTS OF PRACTICE PROBLEMS. He made orgo really interesting and visual, which helped me learn.
Hands down one of the worst professors I've had at Ferris State. His lectures are all over the place, he never stays on topic. During his lectures he jumps from topic to topic, its hard to follow. Also he assigns homework assignments on material he didnt teach. Also the hw assignments are nothing like his exams so its pointless. Avoid Balanda!!
He is a great teacher and is a very funny guy, the subject is tough but he definitely trys to help if you ask for it. He posts his old tests online and it is best to study those.
He failed me by less than one percent. Even though I went to him for help throughout the semester, he only droned on about "life lessons" and things that didn't have to do with the class. Definitely would not recommend.
I had him as an instructor for my chem lab and he helped me understand the material better than my professor. If you ask him questions, he will willingly help you and make sure you understand it. He grades hard but he shows you what you did wrong. He's hilarious and that helps classes feel shorter.
One of the toughest professors I've had here at Ferris, also one of the most passionate. He seemed to be incredibly difficult in contrast to the other orgo classes, but he was just trying to meet standards. Really wants everyone to be prepared! Great prof with tough exams and labs.
Great professor
Balanda expects online homework to teach you and says that lecture is supplemental. That's completely backwards in my opinion. His labs go the full time because he uses an hour to lecture on useless material. the homework has nothing to do with what we're tested on so make sure you study practice tests. He curved every test almost 10% which helped.
All learning is done online and through self-teaching. Unclear about test material, which doesn't relate to homework. I would not recommend this professor at all, to anyone if they have the choice. He's very passionate about this subject, but definitely should not be teaching beginners.
This guy talks to the students as if they all have doctorates in chemistry too. My whole class learned nothing! When we advanced to the next chem class that professor had to basically teach us what we should have learned in Balanda's class. His performance was brought up to our dean it was so bad
This class is terrible. I have less than a nah left and I am about ready to cry. He is terrible. He talks to us like we are chemists and he doesn't explain things at all. And his tests are crap. I am barely sliding by and I and my a straight A student.
I loved chemistry until I took it this year. Balanda makes everything super difficult for no reason. He talks to us like we are going into our masters in Chemistry and his tests are absolutely crazy. Organic chemistry should be taught in only one semester especially with balanda teaching it.
If you really need to take Organic Chem 214, I would recommend you guys taking organic chemistry 321 and 322 which is taught in two semesters. Organic chem 214 is 321 & 322 combined together. You guys will learn at a fast pace, which will be difficult to learn and keep track of, on top of the heavy online HW you will have.
This class was to first time I was ever exposed to organic chemistry so I really had no idea what I was in for. He lectured as if everyone was at his level and made class very hard to comprehend. Study old tests because the questions are the same just changed up a bit on what chemical is used. 100% would not recommend
I don't care for chemistry, and at first I hated this class. Over time it has grown on me it's grown on me. The professor is super sweet and personable, but sometimes it's hard to get an answer out of him. Be prepared to be confused in lab and ask lots of questions. The tests are a jumble of the practice ones, so treat them like the holy grail
Hes a terrible professor and no idea what he is teaching.
I really enjoy Professor Balanda! He wants you to succeed and will answer your questions if you ask. He doesn't make you feel stupid and will explain himself multiple times if he needs to. I think he is hilarious and the stories he tells about his life are so funny. He is really smart! Just pay attention, ask questions, and you'll be fine!
This has nothing to do with Balanda as a person. His teaching style is mayhem. He does lectures at home and homework in class and you basically have to teach yourself everything. DO NOT take him if you can avoid it. He is a great guy outside of the class, but you will not learn anything in his class.
Balanda is an awesome professor, and an excellent choice if you are studying organic chemistry for a plastics and polymer engineering degree at FSU. He makes sure students are all understanding the material during lecture. He also posts previous test keys online to study from. He is great at his job, and I would definitely take another class of his
Although intimidating at first, he has a great teaching style and always answers questions (no matter how stupid). He is a very nice guy and I would definitely take his class again.
He teaches as though everyone has a background in chemistry although this is a course meant to be your basic chemistry not every one had it in high school. To add to that he never directly answers questions and gets distracted way too easily. He refuses to teach the class himself and would rather make everyone do it online.
He's the absolute WORST professor I've ever had. I signed up for a lecture-based course and he made his practically all online. His "lectures" are him showing you one way and telling you never to do any other way, not even the way the book tells you, then never teaches it again. Then he gets mad that everyone gets low grades and blames his students
Dr. Balanda forces students to do online learning even though they didnt sign up for it. He also doesnt lecture at all he basically does the same thing an SLA instructor is supposed to do, I.e. he just answers clarifying questions and gives you a worksheet to complete each class period. You learn more in SLA than in his class.
Dr Balanda was HORRIBLE. You're going to teach yourself everything. He doesn't give examples for algebraic problems and then when he ask for help, he rambles about how you should know it and doesn't answer you. I took a Chem 103 course but he taught it at a higher level and expected you to have the background knowledge that 1st years wouldnt
expects that everyone already knows how to do chemistry coming into his class. makes you do all of the lectures and reading on your own so you come to class to do a worksheet and ask questions. i hated every second of it.
Dr. Balanda expects you to know orgo before you start this course. You are expected to watch the lectures outside of class. When you go to class, you do a worksheet and then leave. If you do not show up, the worksheet is a zero. Lots of online homework. Taught everything to myself. Very cool guy, terrible class. Needs restructuring.
He is a very caring teacher and wants you to learn. When you ask him a simple question he carries on about future material you haven't learned yet and will confuse you, so asking questions is hard. Homework is a big part of the grade but the program will walk you through what you need to know.
This man was the most infuriating person I have ever met. Nearly every student felt like they were failing and most likely would have without SLA and being online full time after corona so they could cheat. He is insanely unhelpful and beyond rude. He thinks that every student knows orgo. SWITCH OUT OF HIS CLASS!!!
It's a bit of a wash. He makes you do the work in a way that sets you up for success, but doesn't really give off the vibe that he cares. By far the most difficult class I've taken (non chem major though), but I also learned the most from it. He's fine to take, just expect to be doing a lot of work in exchange for really learning the material.
Dr. Balanda has to be the laziest and most arrogant professor I have met. For Chem 103 he expects students to teach themselves. He doesnt offer any lectures, when you do ask for help he talks down to you. Avoid taking his classes if possible. He doesnt do anything to actually teach you and will ignore you if you dont work his way.
For a 100 level class, 103 for that matter, this was entirely too difficult. I have taken 400 level classes easier than this. It was in a "flipped" format and the lectures by the book author that we had to watch were dry and hard to stay awake through. The professor was also not great at explaining things and virtually unreachable outside of class.
I changed my major after this professor because the idea of having to take him again made me dread my life . He was the least helpful, condescending , irritating professor I have ever had. He will not help you. He will never help you, only look down to you. Please never take his labs if given the chance. You wont learn anything I promise.
For this being the easiest chemistry class Ferris has to offer, this professor makes it as difficult as possible. He clearly doesn't know his limits and doesn't know how to teach in simple terms. He over complicates every concept, so I usually drown out his lectures. An intelligent man, but very self-conceited and in his own world.
Dr. Balanda was really funny and personable but his flipped classroom style was not for me. He rambles on about material that is way beyond what we needed to know for the class, but somehow I survived this course. Treat the practice exams as holy grail and get as many points in lab as possible. Relieved I do not have to take another course with him
He's nice and chill. He doesnt really yeah though. Hate the class though
I would advise not taking this class. You have to learn everything outside of class on your own. Class time is spent doing an assignment and makes it impossible to listen to him talk. Have to learn everything on top of lab and SLA if required is too much for a 100 level class. Don't take this class.
Flipped classes work for some teachers. Obviously not for Balanda, I've had middle school teachers better than this dude. Makes sense too because his grade average is so low Ferris tacked on a 5:00PM SLA where you basically re-learn everything from that class day, essentially taking the same class twice. DO NOT SIGN FOR THIS CLASS.
It is so hard to focus on the lectures during class because of the in class assignments given to you each lecture that are due after class. SLA is beneficial if required but you still need to learn outside of class as well.
My advice: do all of the practice problems, go to SLA, and study until you feel ready for the exam. Chem103 is very easy if you put in the time. SLA is beneficial when you need help or for practice! Dr. Balanda is a friendly and funny guy who will help when you ask.
Overall I really liked him as a teacher. He's enthusiastic about what he teaches and I find that really important. My advice for others is to do the practice tests that he offers. They're helpful because they show how he words questions and helps you figure out what else to study more of. Find friends to study with too and you'll do just fine.
Homework twice a week all semester. Assignments in class during every lecture so it is hard to focus on what the lecture is about. Attendance is online, so computer or phone is required. He isn't a terrible professor, there is just so many things to do at once it is hard to learn so prioritize learning the material on your own after. 3 tests
Was nervous to take this class after the reviews he had but he really is a good professor. He wants you to learn and be excited about the course, you just have to put a lot of work into teaching yourself. You get what you put into it, and if you watch the lectures, read the book, and do all the assignments asked, you'll do fine. He is a funny prof!
WORST teacher for preparatory chemistry. Ferris added a tutoring course twice a week because his failure rate is so high. WebAssign homework's are light years ahead of what prep chem should look like. Even SLA instructors can't answer homework problems sometimes. Notes are impossible to take, as there's 40-50 question daily quizzes during lecture.
Really good guy but doesn't teach hardly anything himself. Goes on tangents unrelated to the course material. Don't expect a direct (or logical) answer if you ask a question. You will have to read a teach yourself the majority of the material. Go to SLA even if you aren't required, it will be beneficial!
Mr. Balanda had a good few days at the beginning of the semester, but that didn't last long. I only spoke with him over email. I feel that every time I asked him for help, he talked down to me. He even personally recommended I withdraw from his class. As a freshman, that depleted the little motivation that I had to begin with.
Peter Balanda is a goofy dude. He's funny, but he definitely shouldn't be teaching. Outside of class, I've had some nice conversations with him. In class, he makes me feel like an absolute idiot, and sometimes he's rude when you don't understand something. The labs took 3+ hours some days because he doesn't get to the point. Really awful class.
Nice guy. You have to buy a program called WebAssign (Will fail if not bought). During lectures we have to complete a list of questions which can be a little hard if you are trying to listen to him as well. If you go to SLA, listen and ask questions it will help you if are in need, he wont talk down to you as long as he can see you actually trying.
Dr. Balanda, while a very interesting man outside of class, has a horrific teaching style. He expects you to do 60 question keypoints every single class period while he lectures, and expects you to teach yourself using old chemistry lectures.
Nice guy but awful professor! Classes are VERY unrealistic. Go to SLA even if not mandatory. The only way you will pass. Overall good luck LOL
Peter by no means is a bad person or friend to his students, he is really caring and does wish for us to do our absolute best. The problem with the course is not himself but his teaching style and test style. He goes off topic to much, and writes trick question on tests even if his average is low. If you have a choice take a different professor.
