Oh god... i don't know what to say... I've taken Calculus and after one semester with this guy feel dumber.. I honestly think he missed how to communicate with students day at teacher training... If you want to be in a class where failure is a norm and homework is the only way to get points this is the class for you!
He Juggles! But anyway, while the lecture and discussions aren't mandatory, the notes ARE NECESSARY, (tested over notes). Each test he gives you a formula sheet (helps alot). Homework is graded, and VERY difficult (ridiculously difficult). If you have any questions both he and the TA are there to help and do so. 3 for Clarity b/c he mumbles.
His teaching style is horrible, he does not connect with students on any level and most of the class I was in failed or dropped, pick a section with a different prof!
All that is required is showing up, trying to understand, asking questions and doing the homework. His tests are then easy. Takes some work.
He doesnt actually teach, he just is up there lecturing with examples with out going through each step...he can juggle though
This guy was a clown...and he liked to juggle (ironic). His teaching style is horrible, he does not connect with students on any level. When I went to ask him a question he looked at me in disgust and mumbled a reply. One day I came into lecture and a lecture of 30 barely had 10 people there. Please choose someone other than him
Lecture was probably the most useless thing I ever did, although I only skipped a few times. I think I doodled more in my notebook than actually took helpful notes. The tests were really easy, and the homework wasn't too bad either. He basically just wrote up proofs on the board for us to copy, but he was kind of goofy sometimes which made it ok.
Incomprehensible. When the whole section averages a 59% on the first midterm, and the incoming freshman have the highest incoming average GPA in quite some time, something is wrong.
Toy bag is useful in only getting kids to pay attention.
Not a good teacher, hard to understand, he just completes problems and mumbles to himself instead of actually showing us what to do to work the problem. When the average score of the first midterm is an F, there's obviously a problem.
basically useless
best part of lecture is when he juggles
Blanchard is the worst math teacher I've ever encountered. His exams are difficult, his lectures are just rambling, he juggles (but thats not going to get me a good grade on the exams). Oh, and you get a scientific calc. He is a bitter man, I advise getting a tutor when you find out he's your professor. Absolutely terrible.
If you can take this course with another prof do it. This guy is pretty much useless... I had to teach myself or get help from a TA. Attendance is mandatory in lecture... and the lecture is pointless, it's impossible to follow what he's doing.
He speaks clearly. His exams are easy to get a B on, but he throws on problems that test whether you are an A student. The exams are written instead of multiple choice. I got my first A on an exam in his class. Doesn't allow graphing calculators. You really don't need them. Easy class if you want to work for it.
Absolutely awful teacher. Worst math teacher I've personally ever had. His lectures just ramble on about nothing...homework problems arent in his notes. Switch out of his class
Absolutely terrible! He spends his entire hour long lecture blazing through difficult calculus problems saying "you should already know this...if you don't know this you'll fail the class..." without ever teaching you. Unless you're a math whiz I would recommend not taking his class (after only two weeks, I dropped and am taking it at Kirkwood).
He seems like an approachable guy. I hate how half of the lecture is based on PROPERTIES. f(x+h)+ f(x) ....that is confusing to many people I have talked to. I like examples. Very heavy class- each hw assignment takes me 10 hrs- no joke
He's incomprehensible to the average student and throughout the year no one could even figure out how he was grading us. His lectures could have confused the class on long division if that was the subject. After tearing up an AP test and getting an A in this debacle I would advise everyone to just delay any class until it's Blanchard free.
This professor has no knowledge of how to teach his students, going to lecture does not help much at all, his examples don't correlate to the required assignments and the class is difficult as it is without having a incapable professor. Don't take his classes!!
NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH BLANCHARD! Worst teacher I've ever had. Knows nothing about teaching. Doesn't start with an easy example of something--jumps right into the hardest problems. Horrible teacher. Lectures are pointless. Extremely difficult to get ahold of and is extremely delayed with posting grades/info/etc.
there was no point in going to lecture because you couldn't understand it anyways. got more out of my TA than the prof. impossible tests. would suggest taking it with a different prof or at a community college
He went so fast in lecture that if you zoned for more than a second you were lost the rest of the lecture. He also kicked people out of the lecture for using their cellphones... I skipped lecture for the whole second half of the semester and ended up with an A. Not because it was easy, but because I went to the math lab.
the most uncaring teacher i have ever had. i swear he enjoyed failing his students. he also messed up the problems in class more than any prof. i've had. i literally changed my major because i dont want to take another class taught by him.
Horrible. Do not suggest him for anyone looking to take calculus. I only missed lecture 4 times all semester and yet was completely lost. Did above satisfactory on pretest and studied over 80 hours for his final exam and yet got below average. Its either you know it or you don't and if you don't you're not going to because he doesn't help at all
Horrible--you will literally want to transfer after having to take this mandatory business math class.
Useless as a Prof. Going to lecture is worthless, you would get more out of hitting yourself in the face with a bat for an hour than listening to him. He does not teach, he just stands in front of the class and talks at you. Dont bother asking for help either, he is never around, often leaving early for vacation.
Heavy homework load. About 15 people show up in lecture. He makes several mistakes. Tests are multiple choice/written form. The class shouldn't be that hard but exams are nearly impossible because he throws questions on that you've never seen before. Overall, its a frustrating class and I recommend taking it with a different prof.
MathBusiness. If you must take this class, you need a good TA and the math lab. You must do your homework weekly to understand material, plain and simple. Blanchard moves fast in lecture, is very boring and expects a lot out of his students. He makes mistakes often, bad jokes and often mentions his tests' bad averages by other classes. Go Math Lab!
Calc for Business is commonly dropped w/ Peter. Had him 2 years, brutal. I learned the Math Lab is way better than his lectures. Stay on top of your homework & Understand Concepts! The class is applied to Business, so there is extra bs to learn. Homework is key, Math lab is more helpful than Peter.(he doesn't deserve a professor status) MATH LAB!!!
assigns alot of homework, doesnt curve tests, he does curve final grades. i was glad to be done with his class
Worst "professor" i've ever had--thank god he is just a lecturer.
The homework was a little heavy but his lecture was very clear and helpful. He is a nice instructor.
Honestly the most annoying professor in the world. Not a good teacher, does ridiculous "brain breaks" in which he juggles and makes a fool of himself. Might as well teach yourself and use the textbook to full advantage.
It should be an advanced course and a proof based course. But honestly I didnt get anything from him. He only requires very basic DEFINITION and obvious things on exam! But he enjoys took off points on notation or non-important details, which is ridiculous. I really think he doesnt know much algebra, and his TA as well. They always stuck in proofs.
all he does is a joke!TA as well
He is no where near helpful. Going to his lectures are pointless because you can't learn anything from him. Everything he says is exactly what's in the book and he doesn't explain how to do things. Going to the math lab to do homework, instead of going to lecture, is much more beneficial. Exams are much harder than the review materials
notes during lecture are confusing and often times irrelevent. Homework sections are assigned four at a time with little time to ask for clarification.
Terrible teacher. Nobody shows up to lecture because they are completely pointless. He rambles on and on going over notes that are extremely hard to follow along with and for the most part useless. Would strongly suggest avoiding this professor at all costs.
Peter is a terrible professor. I have previously taken a similar math course in high school and still do not understand his class. His lectures are very boring and long. He never explains his work or teach anything at all. You're just better off trying to teach yourself. I would NEVER recommend Peter as a professor.
All he did was juggle
DO NOT TAKE MATH FOR BUSINESS WITH BLANCHARD! Hopefully you take my advice.
He is a terrible professor. You are better off going to the math lab to get help rather than going to lectures. He is very rude and does little help when you need it the most.
Worst math professor ever. He shouldn't be aloud to teach people. He's horrible and I would rather have a dog try to teach me math. He also juggles and thinks he's funny. If you see his name as your professor for math, TRANSFER!!
Worst teacher I will possible ever have. I got a c+ but I know damn well I got so much more than that. He curved kids who averaged D's on exams to B's just for trying and kids like me who are better self taught got a worse grade compared to these kids. Basically do what ever you can not to have him as your teacher.
He is an absolutely terrible teacher. I know that this is only my freshman year and I am still getting acclimated to the college life, however, He does not go into any depth on the lecture material, solely demonstrates problems through strings of letters. And seems more interested with his juggling and what the corn price is at any given day.
He seems to care more about juggling than teaching math. Most of the lecture I was in resorted to just going to math lab instead of lectures. Lectures were very dull and repetitive with not a whole lot of teaching as much as examples of things you don't yet comprehend. Exams are tricky and hard to study for. Study guides are useless.
I don't understand how you can become a professor if you don't know how to teach. Lecture was absolutely unhelpful. Homework would sometimes take more than six hours and it wasn't even helpful for exams. I took Calculus again with another professor and did absolutely fine.
Peter Blanchard was the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. He expects you to know how to do the material before the class. Makes mistakes every class period, and then just scribbles them out. He is very hard to follow, and just rambles on about useless info that we won't be tested over. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class with Peter.
Makes mistakes all the time during lecture, very unclear, often skips steps assigns way too much homework, tests aren't bad if you study and learn on your own overall awful professor has been at a different University every year for the past 3 years for a reason
Discrete Math is one of the worst classes I took at Iowa. Blanchard is very disorganized, which is disappointing and ironic for an instructor of upper-level math classes. Spent the first half of every class repeating what was said the day before. Terrible.
Terrible Professor. He is not clear, he does not answer any questions, he makes attendance to his lectures mandatory and babbles about nothing for every lecture. Teach yourself everything, go to the math lab, get help from a TA, do homework in his lectures, that's the only way to learn in this joke of a class. Hope you like juggling by the way.
I don't really get all the poor ratings. I thought he presented the material clearly, and I learned a lot in the class. The assignments were fair, and I felt well prepared for the exams. I didn't think I'd like differential equations, but he made the class kind of interesting.
He is a really good professor, he does every step of the problem on board clearly and stresses the important material in a proper way. Not very good at joking but a good juggler.
Trash
Terrible teacher who laughs at trick questions on a test that everyone did bad on, jokes about how 90% of the class is going to fail the test/class and is really unclear in lectures and assigns homework on days where there wasn't supposed to be homework. Be ready to self teach yourself and get really frustrated.
Horrible teacher. Absolutely no reason to go to his lectures, he just goes over easy examples and often messes them up. Then on his 25 question tests, 10 of them are word problems and the rest are trick problems that he laughs about in his lectures. Go to the math lab instead of his lectures.
Horrible professor. Fly's through examples in lecture and juggles. Laughs over problems.
Despite being extremely smart in mathematics, he is simply not a good teacher. He flies through examples in lecture, going at a pace no one can keep up with, and is unclear with what is expected from us as students. Overall, brilliant guy but should not be left in charge of a class...
Dr. Blanchard teaches differential equations. Differential equations is not an easy topic to learn and definitely a tough one to teach. When it comes to math courses at this level there is only so much that can be achieved in three hours of lecture a week, but Blanchard really tries his best.
Dr. Blanchard is a great professor. Probably one of the best at this college. If you go to class, listen to him, and understand the problems you will do great. He incorporates some difficult stuff with some fun.
Honestly a good teacher. Pay attention. Ask questions. Take notes. Makes class enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate to take another class with him.
He cared about everyone in the class, and I would say as long as you do all the homework, you should get a B or higher in his classes. The homework he assigns is harder than the tests, so as long as you understand the homework, tests should be a piece of cake.
He doesn't use the university's online systems, so your grade is unknown to you until it's reported as final. He assigns a lot of homework problems that are due every other class meeting. His lectures were actually useful, and he did a good job at explaining things that the book was unclear about. He is good about answering questions as well.
Ridiculous lectures full of mistakes and bad attitude towards students about failing exams. Homework assignments are 60+ questions each week with 3 days to finish. Recommend going to your TA, math lab or finding another way to master the material because lecture is not beneficial and he does not care.
This class is (supposed to be) precalculus and he put derivatives on the first exam. All he does is juggle during lecture, and one time embarrassed a girl in lecture so badly she cried. His examples are way too confusing and he messes them up majority of the time. It is clear he only cares about his more advanced classes. Avoid at all costs.
I would recommend to never take this class from Prof. Blanchard. His lectures are more confusing than helpful. He doesn't teach material in the way that makes the most sense, he teaches it in the most confusing way possible-- I had to stop going to lecture because I would confuse myself by watching him teach and I have an A in the class.
1) IF YOU ARE A LOWER LEVEL MATH STUDENT His explanations are roundabout and unintuitive. He does not clearly communicate expectations and does not explain well. Avoid at all costs. 2) IF YOU ARE GOOD AT MATH This professor is an easy A. He is so disorganized that modest interest will get a good grade. Be prepared for digressions about juggling.
Professor Blanchard is not a teacher. He tells you things and might show you stuff but doesnt actually teach you anything. There is no why or how in his lectures. If you plan on taking one of his classes, be prepared to got to Mathlab on a very regular basis and be able to teach yourself from the book!
Good in some ways
Professor Blanchard does not do a good job of teaching. His lectures are very confusing and he expects you to pick up on difficult topics right away. He assigns a lot of homework full of difficult questions. If you take his class be prepared to spend a lot of time at the MathLab and SI.
power tripping sociopath he should learn how to write and talk in public before stepping to his podium again and critiquing others
Totally aweful. Assigns way too much work for what he actually attempts to cover in class. Thank goodness I have an amazing TA who actually cared. Compared to all professors I've had this professor also makes the TA's work too hard, I feel sorry for them. Tells terrible jokes. It's a large lecture class but I don't think even half show up anymore!
The exams are 10 times harder than the quizzes he writes. Doesn't talk about everything thats on the exams and the study guides are no help.
Arguably the worse professor at Iowa. Course is nearly impossible. Lectures are more harmful than helpful. Bad jokes, shows up late, makes a lot of mistakes, and is rude to students. Gives an enormous amount of homework. First exam was not bad, second exam was impossible, final was impossible. Don't take this class or you GPA will suffer.
Shows up late, makes at least one mistake for every example he does in lecture, and doesn't seem to care about students' grades. Study guides are completely inaccurate to what the tests are like. Makes tests extremely hard; he talks about how he prefers to have a test class average around 45-50%. Do everything possible to not take a class with him.
Honestly I don't see why he's rated so poorly. Unlike most other professors he'll NOT make you memorize every single formula and theory for the exams. He'll give you a lot of the formulas and such so you just have to study on understanding the concepts. So much better than most other math professors. Sure he's a little old fashioned but he's nice
Don't expect to get an A if you skip class. Lectures are amazing with great examples.
Tests are absolutely impossible. Final had a 30% average, test before that had a 35% average. Get a good T.A. or you're screwed. Homework is graded for accuracy not for completion. Worst teacher I've ever had.
Professor Blanchard is simply brutal with his homeworks. He assigns way more homework than anybody would like. He also grades attendance and participation and asks a lot of questions in class. He gives decent partial points on exams but lectures can get messy and confusing. He also treats you like high schoolers: bring excuse if absent, no phone
Dr. Blanchard is a fun guy and he's crazy smart, but you have to be on his level to understand half of what he's doing in lectures. I took this course online and was basically teaching myself. Your grade is based 40% on a few exams and 45% on quizzes. Do well on HW and quizzes to keep a good grade. Make sure to use your TA and the math lab.
He's a fun guy but his lectures are so bland that I end up leaving half way through and end up reading the book. Thankfully the book isn't too different from the lectures because I don't know how long I could pay attention to his lectures. He spends a lot of time on proofs as well.
Prof Blanchard is a great man that teaches a very challenging course. He often said he gave up on trying to write easy tests- its just not possible in Calculus II. He is available to talk to outside of class. He struggled a bit with technology, but made it work during a pandemic.
Bad: bland, pointless lectures; weekly quizzes worth 45% while exams only worth 40%; must read and note take from the book to succeed in any way; quizzes are typically harder than most exam questions // Good: nice guy, always available for help, good discussion sections, and about a 5 percent curve for the whole class // TAKE NOTES FROM BOOK
Peter Blanchard is a great teacher that cares about his students. He is constantly trying to help students succeed. If you pay attention during the lectures you will do fine in the class.
Fair grader, the review documents are pretty close to the test. Is pretty understanding about stuff, explicitly said he would try to make the tests "easy". We didn't get grades until the end of the semester, because the entire class was on a curve. You may get lucky and have him juggle and/or inexplicably cancel class 15 minutes before it starts.
While his lectures are bland, they do provide most of the information you need to pass and succeed in the class. He is happy to answer questions outside of class and during class and provides good feedback. He tries to make the test similar or easier than the quizzes he gives. Overall a nice professor. I would however read the textbook.
