This professor is a 300+ class professor with a doctorate degree in Chemistry. He will teach Chemistry 100 like it is Chemistry 301, so beware. His notes are jumbled and his tests do not cover the notes.

Dr. Blass is an extremely intelligent man when it comes to chemistry, but has little knowledge when it comes to teaching. It is hard for him to communicate with students and understand their questions. He also has no patience. His lectures are scatter-brained and his tests have little relevance to the class material. He also gives no study guides.
Was not the best teacher. Does not take into consideration we were not Chem majors. Most people were taking the class for a science credit without a lab. Did not tell us how he was grading us and ended up failing most of us with the use of clickers. If there is someone else teaching try to get someone else.
I was at good at chemistry before I took his class, the way he explains things is wayyyy too confusing! He is not a very good teacher and the exams are impossible...RUN FAR FAR AWAY.
His class is extremely hard for a beginner's chemistry class. The class average on our last two tests were below 60 and he thinks that is a good average so, he will not curve. He makes us use this online homework program that no one likes and when someone complains about it he gets very defensive and rude. Don't take this professor. He is the reaso
He has no idea how to address 150 students. Class usually entailed spending 1.5 hours on one worksheet while he walked around answering personal questions, so class was waste of time. Made me feel dumb when asking questions. Tests are difficult. Uses powerpoint, but does not help very much after the first exam. Must read book or you will fail.
He is a horrible teacher. He thinks that students can teach themselves and he thinks that the only reason why students do bad in his class is because they don't attend when it reality we attend and still do bad.
Second time around in one of his chem classes. Last time, he failed the class with clikers, this time,ALEKS, the poor guy just can't help himself. If you want to pass, forget lecture, read the book, do the little thing he's tacked on you don't think will matter much because it will wind up being half of your grade. He posts last years tests;use them
The key to getting a good grade in this class is showing him that you are trying by going to his office hours to get help. Honestly you are more likely to get a good grade if you know him personaly. You'll be surprised how much of a difference it will make if you show him that you care about your grade. Meet with him regularly and you'll be fine.
Blass is just an entertaining person. His lectures are all over the place and he tends to go on about something not related to chem. So you have to read the book, do all the worksheets he gives you, and make an effort to get to know him. If he doesn't know you by name that is a bad thing.
I went to class, took decent notes, and ended up with a good grade. Go to recitation, do aleks, and do the previous tests that he posts. If you do that this isnt that hard of a course.
I honestly have a horrible, GPA-breaking grade in this class but I have to say that Peter Blass knows what he's doing. He's an entertaining guy who is genuinely enthusiastic about his subject, knows what he's talking about and knows how to convey the knowledge to his class. He is a really good professor. Online homework is worth too much though.
If you think he's hard in lecture, try having him for lab! Awful. Doesn't know about the experiments and relies on TAs to help people. He doesn't grade his own lab reports, he has a TA do it and she takes off INSANE amounts of points. If you ask him for help, he doesn't know, or he gets annoyed with you. Worst teacher I've ever had.
I love Dr Blass! He is great as a lab instructor! He always wants to help his students and talks to them about the lab and how it relates to everything in the chemistry world. Don't avoid him because of the negative comments here, he is a fantastic teacher and is extremely willing to go the extra mile to make sure his students understand the lab.
Great Guy! Always willing to help! Not always best teaching methods though.
I learned more about chemistry in high school than I did from him. Confusing, hard to follow, and not a good teacher.
Dr Blass is terrible. He is a very smart and nice guy, but a terrible teacher. He is extremely disorganized and I found myself scattered and lost in almost all of his lectures. Aleks is difficult and very time consuming but keep on that and the lab because they will help you. overall, do not take him.
Dr. Blass is an awesome teacher and really goes out of his way to make sure the students understand the material (as long as you visit him that is). In all he's a very lenient teacher who expects students to, show up, take notes, ask questions, and use their brains. Those who think the Gen chem course is hard are usually non-chem majors.
For your first year of chem stay away from Dr. Blass. He presents the material in a very advanced mannor and is very difficult to follow. Exams were very tough and had random and sometimes pointless questions on them. Take the other profs first them come back to blass for physical chem if you need it.
Boring lectures.
I love Dr Blass' class. His exams are easy (if you go through the old exams he posts up) and although he may be difficult to understand sometimes in class for lack of time, just go to his office hours and he'll willingly help you out and explain thoroughly. He curves great too, and i learned a lot from him. I got an A btw.
Horrible. Very boring lectures and most exams looked nothing like the examples that he did in class. I would HIGHLY recommend staying away from him if you have to take CHEM1250 or 1270.
Dr. Blass is a very good professor! He teaches to his exams! Recitations reiterate what the class points out. Exams are very fair, and he gives extra points on exams (i.e. total points 107, but makes the exam out of 100). Aleks is very useful to study the topics he covers in class. Overall, he is amazing! Totally would take him over!
Great guy! He wants students to do well. Posts practice exams and offers bonus on every exam! Also has a bonus quiz at the end of the semester. He really listens to what the students say on extending ALEKS deadlines and always used the class before an exam as a review session. Keep up with ALEKS, read before exams, go to class and you'll do well
I had him for CHEM 1250. I got a B. He is not the best teacher in the world, but he is not bad at all. If anything, the course is to blame. It is hard to teach 300 people on so many different general chemistry topics within a short amount of time. I would really recommend reading the pre-lecture readings as it makes lecture more clear and helpful.
He's dreadful. He relies on Aleks, a computer program, and recitations/the learning commons to teach his students. During lectures he bounces from topic to topic that it's nearly impossible to decipher what he's talking about. His exams aren't too impossible, but if you aren't good at chemistry, I'd study.
Not horrible but I wasn't impressed, I actually liked him as a person, however I feel he thinks that chemistry is a student's only class. Aleks was helpful but also very stressful, constant work sometimes hours every day at it.A lot of studying is needed to do well. If you're not good at chemistry avoid taking him, as you might not do the best.
He expects everyone to just know everything right away. He goes very fast and is confusing most of the time. I went to every lecture and some study sessions and managed a B..now struggling with a C in 127. Although he does post old test to study off of which does help and you know what to expect. Good person, not good professor
Very challenging class. He bounces around a lot in lecture, making it very hard to follow. He knows what he is talking about, so he assumes everyone else does too. He relys on the computer program ALEKS to teach the most important matters. The program also takes up a very large amount of time. I had no time for my other classes
If you have to suffer through chem 1270, do NOT take it with Blass. He is a very nice guy, but an awful teacher. I have learned more from youtube than I have from him, and his tests are impossible. The textbook is sort of helpful, and trust me, it teaches the material way better than he does.
Blass is a good person, but a terrible professor. You go to class and expect to learn, but he just makes chemistry more confusing. I loved chemistry but he is ruining it for me. I barely got an B in his 1250, and in 1270 I am struggling getting a C. I know people who got 100% in 1250 that are getting D's on exams. VOID TAKING HIM IF YOU CAN!
He's a sweet guy, but he's an awful professor. His lessons are scatter brained, the online homework is rough, and the exams are IMPOSSIBLE. He doesn't curve so don't expect any mercy grading. He does provide slides, however, they don't pertain to the exams, so READ THE BOOK. Every chapter. Twice. And don't skip recitation! It's where you learn..
I don't understand all of the negative comments. Blass is very helpful- he will give you back old exams, give you old exams to help you study for tests, and is available to meet with you. lecture is kind of scatterbrained, and the online homework takes a long time, but if you do it and do it well you will understand everything needed for the exams.
He constantly jumps around and is hard to follow. He treats us as though we should already know the info. ALEKS is impossibly long and tedious. His exams are HARD! Not very specific about what to expect on exams and acts disappointed in you if you go to his office hours. I felt like he was weeding out the non-chem majors.
He's a nice guy but he does not know how to teach. His expectations for this course were extremely high. Aleks homework was difficult but at least it taught you. His exams are nothing like the practice exams he gives you and they are impossible. The average exam grade was usually a 65% and he thinks that's ok. Try to find another professor.
Took 1250 with him which wasn't too unbearable. This class is on a whole new level of his pure confusion and ignorance of the students (who, like me, are rather new to chemistry) he is teaching. Most of his lectures consist of advanced material and he is condescending when you go in for help. TA's are where all of the help and learning comes from.
Very awful professor. Lectures are very confusing as he's not clear at all and exams are extremely hard and are impossible to pass.
Really nice guy outside of chem. Awful teacher though. Makes lectures so confusing and way above an intro level of chemistry. Teaches as if we all know as much as he does. TA's, lab, and youtube videos taught me more than he did. Hes not clear when you go in for extra help and his tests are ridiculously hard compared to the practice test he gives.
Blass is impossible. Test averages were in the low 60s or 50s so if you value your GPA, find a different prof. He's nice and everything but NOT meant to teach. His lectures make no sense and he doesn't teach anything that will be on the tests. If he does its the easy watered down version in class vs the hardest possible problem on the test
Worst, I lost everything too. My scholarships and my passion for science. I studied so hard for his exams. I asked how can I study for his exams? He told me to know everything. I work and have to go to school, I understand knowing your subject, but his expectation are unreal. So, don't take this class.
The class is super hard, but it's chemistry. There's a huge amount of info you need to know, and you have to go beyond the lecture material to get there. But Blass tells you as much, and he will help you. We have every resource at our fingertips, and he puts it right in front of us. I've never learned so much in a single class before, honestly.
His class is challenging but you will learn a lot. I wouldn't recommend freshmen to take Chem 1250/1270 because they might not be use to the workload/performance expected. Blass is an honest guy though and will help you as much as you need. Most learning will be done outside of lectures esp. since his lectures can be impossible to follow sometimes.
If you work hard and don't expect to get an A handed to you, you will be fine. I am by no means a chemist, but I got an A in 1250 and 1270. He provides a ton of material to study from and is always willing to post more or meet with you privately. It is a heavier course load but it is college, not high school. Study hard and you can get an A.
worst class i have ever taken, test are difficult and when he gives you old exams to study from none of the material is on the new exam. lectures are pointless because the things that will be on the exam were barley talked about or discussed in class.
Worst class I have ever taken. His lectures don't always make sense and he will ramble and get off topic. We were over a week behind for most of the semester. is test are ridiculously hard and it seems like no matter how hard you study it doesn't help since he puts things into them that we never discuss. You basically have to teach yourself.
Honestly worked my butt off in his class to only receive a 79.44 in the class. He wouldn't round it to a B under any circumstances. Goes on rants the entire lectures and doesn't make it his points to really educate.
I didn't think you could go into a lecture with some knowledge, and come out of it more confused than ever. He would lecture off topic, or ramble on about one subject for an entire lecture. I have never felt so unprepared for exams.
I probably did not learn anything from his lectures because he is so scatter brained, but I still went for wksts I taught myself all the material by going through the recitation problems, doing the old exams (which aren't on the real exams), and doing the homework. I got an A because I worked my butt off. He is a nice guy just not the best teacher.
I took this class for my major 2 semesters with Peter and he is by far the WORST teacher that I have ever had. He explains one way how to do things in class, then when you go to Recitation the TA's explain it a completely different way, and if you go ask him for help he will tell you that the TA's are wrong and they don't know what they are doing
If you want your dreams of going to med school crushed, take his classes. I tried very very hard in his class but he never made any sense. Also, nobody is really sure exactly where the multiple choice comes from on his tests. If you read it will make the class somewhat easier. But good luck.
Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had. I went to all his office hours and studied every day, and the class was still extremely difficult. He told me class would be easy if I read the book and went to office hours, but the exams were almost impossible. If you have a choice, do not take him. You will hate your life if you do.
Wonderful guy. Summer schedule is tough because of the limited weeks but Dr. Blass would stay long into the day to help students. Class was over by 10:15 am and many times he would join students outside of office hours long into the afternoon to help and make sure you had the support needed. Tests were hard but I have a limited background in chem.
I do not recommend him for this class. He made everything very confusing, also what the TA'S taught did not make any sense to me. I was very confused and have never ever struggled with a class like this. He is ready to help out student, but he really confuses them. The only nice part of the class is the Labs. Personal Ido not recommend him!
I honestly don't understand some of these comments. Blass can be scatter brained, but if you take the time to actually read the book to supplement lectures, you will do fine. I got a C in HS chem and have an A this semester, so as long as you're willing to invest time outside of lecture/recitation, you'll be fine.
Chemistry is not the easiest subject, so you need to work for your grade and put in the effort. Blass is able to help if YOU take the initiative to ask questions or go to office hours. He is not a bad professor, I think students mistake subject material difficulty for bad teaching. Do your work, ask questions and you will get the grade you deserve.
Blass is a very condescending man. If you happen to take his class and do poorly he will bring you down about it. His tests are fairly difficult and this semester he had TWO exams for his "final". He is very rude and isn't open to helping students who do not necessarily understand the material. If you have to take him, do the best you can
Dr. Blass is definitely not the best teacher, by any stretch of the imagination. With that being said, he is passionate about educating people. Participate in class, ask questions. He will more than willing to explain. ALWAYS finish the recitation packets. Many exam questions are very similar to what he assigns in them.
Dr. Blass teaches the lab section for CHEM1350H. He and his TA guide you through the lab and give excellent feedback and help tremendously when you are lost. Labs are long, but you truly learn the application of what you have learned in lecture.
Do NOT take this class over the summer. It will be the biggest mistake you ever make! It's a lot of info thrown at you in just 6 short weeks. We did a TON of online homework that he didn't even factor into the final grade! Did not use the book very much either.
Expected you to have mastered chemistry beforehand. When I asked him for help, his replies were condescending, and did not clarify subject matter very much. I highly discourage taking his class
Dr. Blass was a wonderful lab professor for Gen Chem 1 and 2. Although sometimes he goes into too much detail before labs start, the rest of the time he is very helpful. If you need extra help, he always answers your questions and is very knowledgeable. The post lab homework is really hard, but there are no lab quizzes or tests, and no final exam.
Dr. Blass is a good professor overall. However, it is important to put in the time and effort for the class. My suggestion is to do the textbook reading before class, taking notes on the material. Then in lecture focus on what he is saying. He usually hands out copies of the PowerPoint to look over later.
He is passionate about the subject at hand and he is so personable. He is available for help if you ask him because he truly does care about your grades. Sometimes his lectures are a little scatter brained but if you are ever lost. Si sessions are your savior. He is funny and enthusiastic. Show up to class and study hard.
He's very nice and helps you a lot
I only had him as my lab instructor, but he was very helpful. He has a good personality and likes to crack jokes every now and again. If you are ever confused during a lab, he is very helpful with keeping you on track. Labs are fun and interesting and compliment what is learned in lecture.
Dr. Blass is by far one of my favorite professors. He's so passionate about chemistry that it makes you want to learn too! The material in gen chem is tough so you have to really work at it. The online hw helps a lot and so does recitation-DO NOT skip recitation because he puts very similar questions on exams that come from the recitation sheets.
Dr. Blass is a nice guy, he genuinely cares about his students, BUT he is a HORRIBLE teacher. He does not know how to make information relevant to homework, and he teaches entirely too fast. He would be great if he knew how to relay information in a practical way. If you cant give his class more than 40 hrs per week DON'T TAKE IT!
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken! I had Dr. Blass for Chem 1250 as well, so I knew what to expect. He is a nice guy, but his lectures are so hard to follow. He gets going on one topic and branches off for 15 min. about material you don't need to know for the course and won't be tested on. Lectures are scattered and disorganized.
He is very upbeat and funny and at first, he didn't seem all that bad, but as the semester went on he seemed to teach less. He likes to pick the most challenging problems for exams! I felt like I learned more reading the book and working on my own than going to class. Attendance is mandatory but he does make comments about people not showing up
Very lecture heavy. Lectures can be VERY boring and can be hard to focus.
Dr. Blass is a good prof. He goes off tangents at times but he's hilarious. If you stay engaged in class by listening, following along with problems, and asking questions you will do well.
Boring lectures. Goes on tangents and is hard to follow. I learned more in recitation than in lecture. Overall, tests aren't awful, but can be challenging. Homework is online and can be extensive sometimes. Go to recitation. Biggest advice for tests is to complete packets and worksheets with practice problems given in lecture and recitation.
As a lab professor, he's pretty great. He's passionate about the material and is excited to teach everyone else about it. He genuinley enjoys the labs and makes a Monday 6-9pm lab fun. Labs generally took the while time and I found them chanllenging.
Super funny and great guy, but not the best professor. He gets off topic a lot and doesn't explain concepts very well. When it comes to the exams, he picks the hardest problems to use. The average in my class was always in the 60s% but he barely did anything to curve or help the class out.
A lot of people complain about Dr Blass, but most of it is not justified. If you show up to lecture, read the book, and do recitation work you should do fine in the class. He does go on tangents now and again though. Sometimes they're useful, other times not so much.
Don't put off the online homework until the night before. It takes hours to do depending what section. Didn't really go into concepts, just expected you to know it after telling you one time. Doesn't understand that if the whole class averages 50% on the exams then it's his fault not theirs.
Dr. Blass is a great professor! Need to study a bit, but it's not a hard class!!There are usually 2or 3 HW each week that usually take me 1.5+ hours each. I enjoy chemistry and his class ,however, he does seem to get behind a lot. He also gives us a worksheet in lec to do but most times we never finish them and I am stuck on the hw bc of it.
Worst professor I've had at BGSU
This class was harder than anatomy and physiology
Not good
Never disliked a teacher as strongly as I do with blass
Peter Blass is one of the most disrespectful professors that I have ever had. He might "teach" a topic once and then he expects you to know it as well as he does the next. He will go on tangents throughout the lecture and the complain about being behind in class. He will be very rude to you if you ask him for any help. DO NOT TAKE PETER BLASS!!!
He's a nice guy, is very smart, and does care about his students. As with many teachers in the hard sciences, he expects you to do the heavy lifting and get help if you need it. If you fall behind, you may be doomed. Pro tip: don't take this during a busy semester. Practice problems!! The class, exams, even homework, is hard. Not his fault though.
I study often and go to class, but Dr. Blass is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. I asked if I could meet with him to help fix some issues with my homework module and he said, "I don't do office hours, email me" and then he does not respond to my emails. He is condescending and unwilling to help. Terrible lecturer and outdated. Dusty.
There are a lot of negative reviews, but I really enjoyed this class. I am not naturally great at chemistry but it is not impossible to get an A if you attend review sessions, read the book, and do the hw. He really wants his students to succeed but isnt great at explaining things, so expect to have to relearn some concepts on your own.
This man gets such a bad rapt. I thought his lectures were phenomenal and he made coming to class worthwhile (I highly recommend sitting in the front row of the lecture hall and paying attention) He is a very intriguing man and his passion for chemistry radiates through his teaching. I am excited to take him again this next semester!
Wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone. Very intelligent man, but I ended up having to teach myself to even begin to understand the concepts due to his lack of teaching ability
Dr. Blass is a really nice guy and he really loves chemistry. He is scary at first but he really cares about his students and he wants you to do well. Labs were easy if you knew what you were doing, but if you needed help, you just needed to ask. His class helped me realize it's okay to admit that you don't know what you're doing!
This class is a weed out. If you are a lazy student, you won't pass. Watch the videos in the Mastering chem book, practice recitation problems and homework problems before exams, and watch the organic chemistry tutor on YouTube. The course is a lot of info in a short time, so he doesn't hold your hand during lectures.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had in my young adult life. He genuinely does not care if his students succeed or fail. He refuses to answer emails. Very hard to follow, lectures mostly on irrelevant material. Grade in lecture is determined through three tests so if you fail a test, youre basically going to fail the class.
Not a bad guy when you get to know him. Lectures are hard to comprehend but he offers A LOT of outside help. Use it!!!!
Lots of material that builds upon previous lessons. If you skip a class, you will have difficulty understanding the following lecture. Available and helpful. The course requires effort, and you'll want to spend twice as much time studying as spent in lecture. Don't wait till the last minute to study or complete assignments.
Dr. Blass is a very difficult professor. He is the head of the Chemistry department and expects most things to be "common knowledge. Maybe for a Chemistry professor? But not for Get Chem students. He also does MasteringChemistry (Khan academy for Chem) and refuses to put grades in the canvas grade book until the end of the semester
Professor Blass is a good guy at heart, but he will not slow down the class even if half of the students are failing. He's bullheaded and will not give you more time/less homework. The class work reflects heavily on the homework but if you use Chegg, please use Chegg. I couldn't get through this without it.
Worst professor I have ever had. Would not recommend taking Gen Chem 1 or 2 with this professor. The lectures are hard to follow, and exams are very hard. Either study an insane amount, or you will not get a good grade.
Must be able to teach yourself. Spent so much time on Ochem unit but was hardly on the exam. Everything he breezed through made up most of the first exam. Whole class made our own study sessions to teach ourselves the material.
He does not really listen to the students. He is determined to stick to his syllabus to the point that he records videos and expects you to watch an entire lecture outside of class time so that we are on schedule. If he were teaching an advanced chemistry class I think it would be better for him, but this is general chemistry.
Did not enjoy his class. He was not very helpful or available to students easily. I have emailed him multiple times asking for help and reaching out, never once got back to me. I understand professors are busy and sometimes it can be hard to compromise with students, but he does not budge.
Dr. Blass is the type of professor to make class fun. He is such a caring guy who loves his job and loves teaching chem. However, his class does move fast so missing class you feel behind. Overall great professor and I am excited to have him next semester.
Dr. Blass is a great teacher. He really loves chemistry and he makes lectures as interesting as they can be. He really cares that students are learning. People who do bad in his class are the people who don't show up to class or just sit in the back and talk the whole time. Pay attention and you'll do fine.
Does not organize canvas well which can lead to miscommunication with assignments, does everything on paper, and lectures can be confusing.
Despite the difficult material we were learning, Dr. Blass made the class interesting! Yes, it's a hard class, but if you do the work, you should be fine.
Dr blass doesn't give his students a chance to pass this class .exam weigh heavy which is the only thing that can change your grade .dr blass doesn't grade your exam he lets students which all grade different
Dr. Blass is an absolute treasure. Please protect this man at all costs. He is a very good teacher and it is clear that he is passionate about what he teaches. His use of LAs helps a lot.
Very intriguing lectures and fairly funny; chem isn't east but he does make it more enjoyable. It is a fairly structured class
Dr. Blass is very enthusiastic about chemistry, and he is willing to help students. LA's are also available during lectures and outside of class for personal help. Attending lectures is crucial to understanding the material and homework. Clear exam reviews are given for each class.
Dr. Blass's chem lecture is what you expect from a large lecture. This class is intro level, so you likely know some things from high school that will help. I found it beneficial to read the textbook before class to better understand the lecture material. He is very enthusiastic about chemistry and always willing to answer questions.
Good luck if you ever have to take gen chem 1 and 2. I was an A student in high school when I took my chem course, and now my grade/gpa is trash. It's hard to focus in a giant lecture hall, so extra good luck if you struggle focusing. Overall, terrible course. Worst one I've ever taken. Study for days and save yourself. The class average is bad.
the man cannot teach, he is a nice guy but i have no clue what he is saying. whether i went to lecture or not i didn't get a thing. he had a ton of options for outside help but in the end it didn't do much for me. if you mess up on an exam you are screwed, the homework is barely weighted its all on the exams.
Blass was very nice but when it comes to education that doest really matter if the teaching skills aren't good. The class is just too much material and it goes too fast. I did like that he gave us practice exams to study from but that wasn't really enough. The recitation was helpful, it boost your grade if you attend and do all the work
Blass is pretty easy to contact outside of class, and this course has lots of opportunities for outside help, though I didn't really go to any of it. He is an ok lecturer, I got a pretty good grade in the class without really reading the textbook. MasteringChem often taught me better than actually attending lectures
Tests are difficult compared to work done in class, lectures are very difficult to along with at times. Overall class I felt was very unorganized and the amount of paper worksheets he uses makes it very difficult to study and keep everything together.
This class was a lot more difficult than CHEM 1230. Exams were tough and some questions that showed up were never discussed. Old exams he posted were easy to study from, but were so much easier than our actual exams. Overall, you need to work hard and always pay attention in class. Do that, you'll be okay.
Worst professor I've every had would have times to get help but makes you feel dumb when asking. Thinks he's class is so easy and everyone will success but half of the people fail because the material is not taught well. Exams are so hard was worse than the practice with was different information.
Dr. Blass is an extremely kind professor and wants you to do well, however his lectures were not very helpful to me personally. I learned more by watching his videos that he posted on canvas.
While this class was difficult, Dr. Blass made it much easier to learn. He was very approachable outside of class and always had a smile on his face. The LA system he uses in this class does make it much easier to learn in a smaller setting but he always checks in on his students to see how they are doing.
Although attendance wasn't taken, you would fall behind if you missed. I thought his lectures were great and he explained the topics well, but his exams were extremely difficult especially for being a level 1000 class. There was homework due about twice of week which was fairly challenging and took a long time to complete.
Class has 5 exams that add up to 70% of the class. I went to all lectures and review before each test and struggled to get a C in the class but got a A in Lab. He has TAs do all the grading. Recitation is where I learned in this class. Hw is on mastering chemistry which cost extra and is nothing like the exams. Blames us when exams are below 60.
Make sure to watch for the Mylab assignments. Doctor Blass is a very scatter-brained professor which I liked because it is the same way that I think. But, I have a lot of friends who really didn't like Dr. Blass' way of teaching due to his way of going from one thing, to another and back to the original topic.
Dr. Blass does not help much outside of class and makes you feel dumb. I could never take one of his courses again.
He lectures so slow, for every exam you get refrence sheets but if there isnt an equation on their he wont give it to you. There is a decent amount of homework but only assigns it 2 times a week, he does a lot of review sessions and recitation is easy
(I took the six-week summer version of this class, so my experience might differ) BGSU doesn't have a lot of great chem professors, but Dr. Blass is a lesser evil. He has passion for the subject that helps keep you awake. That said, he tends to pile on homework and never curves grades on principle. At least there are no surprises on the tests.
I quite enjoyed his lectures, he would ramble and he easily gets a bit off track but if you pay attention, he makes his point in the end. It is important to go to class, he hands out worksheets & a lot of his lectures are just going through example problems (helpful!) If you go to class and keep up with the worksheets, you can pass this class.
Dr. Blass is probably one of the worst possible professors to teach an intro to chem course. He speaks to a lot of students who aren't understanding the material like it should be basic knowledge when it's not. I made it clear to him that I didn't have to take chemistry at my high school so everything I new to me and he told me I had to study more.
Blass is not good at teaching or organizing this class. He expects you to know everything from previous chemistry classes. He was not helpful when I asked questions and often was rude. I also heard him make many comments about his students being incompetent. Overall the course was a mess. Take elsewhere if possible, if not good luck!
Dr. Blass' lectures are important to go to because the worksheets and TAs are helpful. He easily gets distracted during his lectures but he finds his way back and if you listen to his tangents - sometimes they do help with the concepts. Exams are straightforward. If you use the old exams he posts there normally aren't surprises on the exams.
Everyone complaining about blass proabably didn't actually try. He gives great lectures and plenty of example problems (both in class and outside). the homework genuinely helps you understand the material and the TAs are helpful. He posts old exams to help study and his exams are all fair. Genuinely blass is a great option!
I'm not going to lie, he's not the best professor in the world but he absolutely is not the WORST professor in the world. My grade it totally my own fault because I thought I was able to cruise through this, but make sure you understand everything 100%, read your book, do your homework, and reach out to TAs when you need help.
Dr. Blass is knowledgeable about chemistry and cares about his students. Since it is a college course, there's a lot of chemistry material in a short amount of time. There are lots of resources to study including class assignments every day, book practice problems, office hours, and practice exams. Be sure to utilize what is given when studying.
He's very passionate, yet doesn't teach very well. Assigns online homework that often people don't do (because it WILL take you eternity to finish it all). Exams are tough and nothing like the old exams he shows you for examples.
Blass makes it very clear what needs to be done to get a good grade. He gives old tests for practice exams, and as long as you do all the homework and practice exams with understanding you should be fine. He likes to ramble about random things sometimes, but overall he is very passionate you just have to put in the work.
Do anything at all possible to not take his lecture. I'm sure he's a great person, but no competition the worst instructor I've ever had. I get majority A's, but am so confused I often don't even know what problem we are on. He confuses himself often and makes countless mistakes. His example tests are not even close to similar to the ones given.
Blass, himself, is a great guy. However, he is not the best teacher in the modern age. He does give plenty of papers with practice problems for you to do. If you use those and understand what you are doing, you should be fine. Be prepared for tests because those are basically your grades. Do the homework, and it can save you a whole letter grade!
Not great but not terrible. Lots of practice problems which is helpful. Get help from LAs and TAs! Need to practice a LOT outside of class to pass. Exams are tricky and make most your grade. Decent amount of homework that is worth very little points, but it will hurt your grade if you don't do. Don't take chem if you don't have to.
Professor Blass is passionate, but can be tough. Do all the homework, practice exams, and utilize resources like the textbook and Unstuck study to succeed. Attendance is mandatory - stay engaged and you'll learn a lot.
He rambles on in the lecture and speaks pretty fast, making it hard to pay attention. Peter and both TA's and LA's have outside officer hours which I recommend going to because the lectures are awful. There are 4 exams and very minimal homework. The homework could also be 30 questions and only be worth 4 points. The exams are awful
This man CAN NOT teach and it's infuriating. A very difficult class and all he does is ramble on for half of the class instead of covering what will be on the test in detail. Gives hard exams and will not give any kind of curve or extra credit when the class average is low. It's a shame he is the only professor for both General Chemistry 1 and 2.
Do not take this class please save yourself and avoid him at all costs.
He doesn't teach, he rambles and expects you to understand everything he says. I studied for hours on lecture material and concepts with my study group and ALL of us failed it, including the rest of the class. He is very unhelpful and doesn't give study guides.
If you value your sanity, DO NOT TAKE GEN CHEM 1. Blass will talk for over half of the class about random topics that have nothing to do with the actual topic and turn you loose to work on the worksheets pretty much on your own. He doesn't offer any sort of extra credit and will rarely curve an exam regardless of how low the class average may be.
Professor Blass is one of the toughest professors you will have at BGSU. His course is very physics heavy even in a general chemistry course. He will pick really niche things he mentioned once in class and include them in tests. He's a nice guy, just not the greatest professor. You will have study session opportunities though so utilize them.
Chemistry 1230 was one of the toughest classes I've taken. While Professor Blass was a very nice guy, the class was extremely lecture and material heavy and exams are the only thing that really effect your grade. He lets you study off of previous classes exams however most of the material on those exams rarely show up on yours. Prepare to study!
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE GEN CHEM 1 WITH BLASS!!! He doesn't really teach, just rambles for 50 minutes. He doesn't explain basic concepts, just expects you to know them. Class average of one of the exams was a 49%, he refused to curve it and blamed it on his students instead of his awful teaching. He does not set students up for success at all.
Currently sitting in lecture while writing this, the man is has a strong love for chemistry but is not good at teaching it, the connects he posts for homework take for ever and are just repeat questions, takes forever to respond to emails, do not take this class.
Dr. Blass is not a great instructor and doesn't explain concepts very well. There are not enough LAs to be effective, and many times they get confused. His exams are very hard and you likely won't finish them either. Homework often takes HOURS to complete and it is mostly repetitive slop. Most frustrating course I have ever had to take.
Dr. Blass is truly the worst professor I have ever had. He gets off topic frequently in class, he allows class to run over and proceeds to gets upset when students start packing up and leaving despite him taking over the allotted time. His explanations of topics are insufficient and unhelpful. Not to mention his HORRIBLE exams...
It's been over a year and I'm still thinking about how horrible he is. Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. Confuses himself, can't understand him, doesn't know the answer to students questions, homework that takes forever for barely a grade, and impossible tests. I have a great GPA and failed.
switching my major cause of this class and this guy, avoid him if you can
Nice guy, but incoherently rambles for 50 minutes. I know there's way too much information to cram into the semester, and that is completely the fault of the chem program, but his rambling does nothing to help. Never really explains much, just talks at you. Exams are way too difficult and usually require a grad-level understanding of the material.
Exams are ridiculous. He gives you no study guide, only copies of old exams, but hardly any of the material from the old exams even shows up on the one he gives you. Avoid this class at all costs if you value your sanity. They really need to change something because it doesn't provide a good foundation to truly learn chemistry.
Get ready for every assignment and exam to be based solely on a game of semantics. Doesn't matter how well you know the content, you also have to be able to decipher a bunch of nonsensical jargon and nitpick the tiniest aspects of the phrasing of every question. Terrible class, avoid it at all costs if you value your sanity.
Stupid tests. Stupid homework. Stupid class. Avoid at all costs. He is awful at teaching and it doesn't matter if you understand the material in lecture the test is going to be something different and 10x harder. There's basically no point in even studying his old tests because none of the material will be on the current exam.
Blass made Chem unbearable and miserable. Peter Blass did not prepare me for my major or career path. His class made me question what I want to do. This man was around when chem was made. It doesn't matter if you attend every office hour and lecture or you skip class, you will be confused no matter what. Exam avg was 53% out of 300+ students.
Dr. Blass gives you everything you need to be successful in his classes. Many additional practice problems in the packet for each lecture for after class, old exams from previous years, and homework that will prepare you for the exams. As long as you actually put in the work and do not just expect to float by in this class, you will have no issues.
Very rude and not helpful at all, especially rude to the woman who helps him pass out the papers, talks to you like you are dumb, avoid this man.
There is a lot of homework online but most of the time it's actually helpful. His lectures are sometimes boring, but the course is not too bad if you actually put in some time and effort. The worst part of his exams are the multiple choice sections but the rest of it is relevant material. Don't believe all the 1 star reviews.
Lecture makes you feel like you've learned a lot and nothing at the same time because he'll spend forever on concepts that rarely come back and not the actual content. Felt awful being there but didn't want to miss. The curriculum is organized strangely too, so expect the third exam to be horrible and the final to be easy (with high school exp).
Honestly not exaggerating when I say this is the worst class I've taken. He basically expects you to already know everything. He'd go over an example or two and then hand out a packet with problems 10x more complicated than what he just went over. Just overall completely unhelpful and he has solidified my dislike for chemistry.
You learn more outside of the class than you do in. He's clearly very passionate about chemistry; however, his love does not translate well in the classroom. He will ramble and then hand you a practice worksheet that barely covers the topic.
