He's the best ever!
Convinced me to go into law--now at U of T
He's the most effective prof I've ever had!
great teacher, learnt a lot.
interesting class, cool prof
The class was a little dry, although he has an odd sense of humor that makes you chuckle. Although he isn't an easy marker, he really wants you to do well. Take the course from him, but be prepared to work.
he plays favourites and is one of the worst profs I have ever had. He gives out marks seemingly randomly and if you ask for explanation he is very unclear. The class was boring boring boring and the final paper was riduculous. DON'T take this class, expecially not with him.
he just plain sucked... everyone coming out of that class said so... Not only did he mark "VERY HARD"... his answers to questions were vague... he never told us what he expected on the tests... he only says "Get to the point"... his marking was a total bust as well... i had a percentage grade higher than someone else.. but my letter grade was lower
Well, what can I say about this guy? He sued the university for wrongful dismissal, won his case, now he's back and more bitter than ever. He has sick sense of humor, his classes are boring, and he treats his students horribly. His exams are even worse, he expects us to think as if we've been practising law for years. DO NOT TAKE BSEN WITH HIM!
Overall I learned a tremendous amount about business law from taking this course. The assignments, especially the last research paper, were great for in-depth learning as they required a lot of critical thinking. The lectures could be very boring which was a negative but I would take another course from him again.
Well, the class was realy hard, and the midterm was plan brutal. He is a really (really, really) hard marker, and does not provide a clear explanation why the mark was taken of, or what you were supposed to do in the first place. On the other hand, he made the call exctremely interesting! It was worth coming to every lecture.

He is a very helpful prof- but only if you really, absolutely know the material. It's so hard to get an answer out of him most of the time. Sometimes think that all students should think so critically about the material and doesn't realize that we are NOT law students. Overall, a good prof. I'll take a course from him again.
Prof. Bowal is awesome. He is a hard marker and has hard tests but he is very helpful and answers any questions you have. He is very funny and his class is a blast.
I think some of his lectures in class are similar to how he would act in court. Lots of vocal influctions to convey different points & other sorts of dramatics. If you want to be taught by someone who is enthusiastic about their subject take his class. An added bonus are his online exams (both midterm and final).Beware avg mark in his class is 65%.
Phenomenal professor, is grilling and a difficult marker, know your stuff before going to class.
I dont know why people are so bitter with this guy, hes a stud. Knows his stuff inside out, and his dry sense of humor grows on you throughout the semseter. Ya his tests are hard but its university, its not supposed to be easy.

well i just wrote the final last week. and let me tell you, it was just like the midterms. ridiculous. half of the multiple choice questions were a paragraph long and required so much application, as if we were lawyers or something. he knows his stuff, and the stories are interesting, but his tests are stupid. Dont take it with him if you want an A
He skips over the "business" law chapters, and studies just straight up law. I feel like he always looks for a very specific understanding, which I do not believe the average student possesses. Highly recommended to take the course with someone else. If you are stuck with him, do the online practice text questions and work hard on the tribunal.
I would recommend taking this class if you want to find out if law school is for you. He teaches using the case law method law schools use along with calling on students for answers with high expectations of preparation. I think the world of him and highly reccomend him if your looking to grow as a student and understand the legal system.
I took this in a block week and it was intense. He doesn't like keeners and seems to enjoy picking on students who look unprepared. I suggest reading the whole textbook and then acting like you don't care so when he picks on you, you can save yourself from humiliation. The final is BRUTAL and as a result curves it. I did learn A LOT though.
Peter Bowal is probably the best professor I have had at the U of C so far. Anyone can make an economics class interesting, but it takes a really good professor to be able to teach something that not everyone is interested in and still make it interesting.
His class is super interesting and as a person I must say he's a cool guy.... However, no matter how hard you work and how committed you are you will always be disappointed with your grade.. If you dont care about your grades at all , sure, take his class but if you do stay AWAY from him.
Took this class during block week, had to prepare all the readings beforehand. However, if you're dedicated and stay on top of it, it isn't too bad. You get the grade you deserve in this course, however he is extremely approachable and willing to lend a hand if you need it. Highly recommended to all! Learned a ton!
Block week Fall 09. Even though lecture goes from 8am-5pm he managed to keep it interesting. I learned a ton from this class. Tests are challenging (esp written questions). Reading in advance is critical. Contribute to discussion! He is nice, helpful and knows his stuff. He even said he would be honoured to be a reference for us in the future!
Peter is an excellent prof. But be careful. This class IS NOT easy. The open book exams are very hard and you may not be completely happy with your grades. But as for the class itself, I thought it was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. He really knows how to make these things interesting.
Block week W2010. Come prepared for this class. To be successful in this course, you have to sacrifice a few days before the course begins to read the textbook because you won't have time to during the week. The class is interesting for the most part, and Bowal engages the students through discussions and videos. Overall, I recommend this Prof!
I found him arrogant and condescending. He intimidated students who were trying to learn and made people feel uncomfortable in his class. His expectations seemes to be too high for the level of class he teaches. Overall, I wouldn't recommend him for BSEN395 but maybe for a different law course.
Great professor, cares deeply about his students. Took this course in block week and it was a huge load of information. Readings could be completed easily if started a month early. That being said though, prof was always enthusiastic and relevant in the eight-hour classes.
Peter Bowal is by far the best professor at the university of calgary. His intellgence, teaching style and helpfusness are the easy to note visible metrics from attending his class, but it his genuine care for his students and what the university SHOULD be that sets him apart. A few years ago he sued the U of C for their shady behavior (See google)
He is the worst prof I have ever had in my entire stay at the University of Calgary. He is foolishly arrogant and sooner or later it'll catch up to him
This has to be the best professor I have had in 3 years at the U of C. He makes what could be a relatively boring subject a class to look forward to each week with his enthusiasm and his knowledge of the subject is unprecedented. His tests are very challenging but if you want to come out of this class with something, take it with Bowal.
He's a good guy, lectures are boring, but you'll manage. He's really experienced with business law and loves class participation. I found the tests hard, but as long as you read the textbook and pay attention in class it'll be fine. Cares about his students, and is definitely someone you can approach for help if you need it in the future.
Mr. Bowal is the best prof I have ever had at U of C. He's brilliant, and very genuine and helpful. He has a talent for teaching, and wants all of his students to learn and do well. That said, the course itself is challenging - but it's law! Just attend class, do the readings, and work at it. I learned a ton from this man and am better for it.
Interesting course very useful in all aspect of life, however test are hard and tricky. Mr Bowal is one of those teacher who does everything on the computer and i mean everything including midterms and finals.
Peter Bowal's bock week class was incredibly hard and ultimately unfair. His only merits lie in the (admittedly) interesting class discussions he hosts and his impressive credentials. Even then, all they prove is that Cambridge doesn't equip its students with the capacity to write a proper multiple choice question.
I took BSEN 395 in the block week format. I would strongly advise of doing the same. Although the tests were often tedious and time-constrained, if you enter the week having looked at ALL of the SUPPLEMENTARY READINGS posted on the BlackBoard page, you'll do fine. This includes the practice exams (!!!). Also, the textbook is not necessary.
This prof is one of the worst profs I have ever had at the University of Calgary. This man belongs in a courtroom not in a classroom. He does not know the meaning of teaching, he should just stay home.
Peter Bowal is very inspiring to learn from. I never felt like I needed to go to class to pass the course, but I went anyways because he made the material so interesting. He is hilarious, and a very cool guy.
Don't listen to the haters! Prof. Bowal takes a personal interest in the success his students, and although he requires a lot more effort than some other senior classes, it is worth it. Business Law is one of the only practical law courses you can get outside of the Faculty itself, and anyone in business should at least audit one of his lectures.
Really enjoyed Peter. He's funny, easy to talk to, makes the lectures really interesting, and is an all around good guy. He marks a little difficult, but it shouldn't really impact what you get out of this class. Highly recommended.
He is the least helpful prof I have ever come across. Not only does he not reply to e-mails but he does not clarify what is required for exams and assignments. The tests are irrelevant to classroom material, and are marked unfairly. Avoid at all costs.
He is too arrogant and thus makes the course extremely hard to comprehend. His exams and marking are inconsistent.
The two trash ratings below were from the same nasty person: same day (hour), comments begin with same voice and style and they're identical ratings. This was obviously someone who wanted the questions and answers to the impending final exam in advance. He did not get that so he smacked the prof hard on this site.
Difficult exams, but overall very well taught. Very nice guy, really tries to get the class involved. I didn't expect to be this interested in this class.
I have never encountered a Professor that cares more for his students. The course is case based, and Prof. Bowal does a great job keeping it interesting and relevant. You must attend class as there is a heavy participation component. I highly recommend taking this senior business option with Prof. Bowal if you are considering attending law school.
Bowal is a great guy. Very passionate and clearly cares about his students. Tests are extremely difficult. Highly recommend taking law with another professor. No others test like him. Class can be boring but he's a good prof. However, tests are extremely hard, study notes and know the laws inside out.
Knowledgable, personable, funny and engaging. He challenges you. He's a model prof, really cares about your success.
Absolutely wonderful professor. Genuinely cares about his students and what he is teaching, always tries his best to make it interesting despite the somewhat dull content. Most profs could learn a lot from him!
He's tough but knows his stuff and wants everyone to succeed. Bowal gets to know your name and cares about you personally.
This prof is terrible! Questions are always "stay to the point". Won't specify the point and will lead you in circles. Huge effort required and when he marks he still does not know what he is looking for. Grades are random. Mis lecture...you will hear about it. Lecture is based on his interest, often NOT law or business related. Dissapointed.
He's good. Very, very good.
Bowal was alright in class(block week), covered content thoroughly and tried somewhat to make it interesting, but his content covered in class did not relate to the tests and he was rude and unfair in marking. It is like he looked for reasons to take off marks and was rude about it to. Do not recommend
Peter cares alot that the students succeed. He has high expectations which won't please many. Easy grades are found elsewhere but if you are here to learn, he's your prof.
Peter Bowal is the reason I went to law school. He is funny, engaging and always questions the way things are.
Mr. Bowal is very rude and condescending. It may be a Lawyer thing, but I've had other, more established Lawyers as prof's who treated their students with respect. I was looking forward to this class, but after a while I felt like we were just listening to him rant. He has a huge ego, and takes offense when you don't attend all of his lectures.
If you're looking for an easy course, bowal's class is not for you. That being said, he is one of my favourite profs so far. He seems to truly care about his students, is extremely knowledgeable, and makes class very interesting and engaging. Will definitely be taking his senior business law course later in my degree.
Extremely hard prof with no scaling. Impossible to do well in course. He should really give shorter exams..
Lots of whining going on here. Hey, it's university. Bowal pushes you to do your best, he does not give you an A for only having a pulse.
It's the worst prof ever, you might get all As and Bs in all of your other class, but his class is IMPOSSIBLE. He demand so much, like what an actual lawyer opinion. Everyone take BSEN 395 with him suffers while the other class are acing the course
Test and Final exams are brutal. I would not recommend this prof. Not an easy class.
I learned alot and really enjoyed this course.
Hand's down, he's the best, hardest-working, most caring prof I've had at the U. of C.
Took it during block week and found that it was too much information to take in for 1 week. His tests are also brutal. However, Peter is a relatively nice guy, is very knowledgeable and approachable. He will do what he can to help you succeed if you ask for help. Take class if you want a rewarding experience. Avoid if you want to a good grade.
Peter is a super nice prof, very helpful. He wrote a letter of reference that helped me to get a good job. He cares a lot so students succeed.
I liked the course. Bowal pushes you always farther than you'd be satisfied with. You'll learn tons if you put in the work.
Good Prof. Hard Final Exam. Work hard on the assignments and you can still do very well.
Just took this class in block week! Peter is good at explaining things during class (and loves what he teaches) however his tests are extremely confusing due to poor wording. A very hard course to take in block week, but not impossible. Textbook is great for background info if you aren't familiar with law terms.
Bowal is very animated and interested in the material. I actually really enjoyed the stuff he covered. He marks hella hard though - but no worries, he does a ridiculous curve at the end. I ended up with an A- and I'm pretty content with it. Final exam is open book.
I took this course in block week. Some of the multiple choice questions on the open book exams are ridiculous - using google doesn't even help he expects you to read his mind. He is arrogant, rude to students, and unwilling to see your point of view if you think part of an exam is unfair. Take with the other prof if you can.
He's a hard-working, caring prof. He was very fair. I learned a ton.
For an incredible, challenging learning experience there is Bowal; for an easy, meaningless A there are all the rest.
I took this in block week & he is honestly one of the best profs I've ever had. I've been a student for 5 years, I've taken other law classes, I've even taken graduate level classes - he's the best. He's honest, fair, and super kind. It's not an easy A, it's not for the "Cs get degrees" crowd, but if you're a good student & love law, take this.
My favourite prof I've had at U of C. Peter genuinely cares about his students and seems very passionate about law, which makes the class more interesting. Took this course in block week and I was actually bummed when it was over! Great prof. HIGHLY recommended. Like everyone says, his tests are challenging so go to every class and pay attention!
Very unspecific with what he wanted us to do for assignments, resulted in a bad grade that took my final grade basically a whole letter down. All my friends who took the class with another professor got A's and said it was the easiest course they've taken. Was left with boring long lectures, with a self-promoting frustrating & hard to follow prof.
Peter Bowal is an amazing prof. He has great notes online but the things he tests you on is what he says in class so you better write notes. The subject matter is really interesting and you can tell he knows his stuff. I'm not that smart but he makes everything so clear and understandable. Plus he's funny too.
Takes simple topics and makes them way more complicated than they need to be. Takes forever to get to his point and loses you in the process. Gets off topic a lot to irrelevant material. He tests on what he says in class. Tests are extremely hard. Very arrogant and condescending. He does know what he's talking about but is bad at communicating it
Very passionate about law and you can see it in his enthusiasm. This was my first block week course ever so it was heavy on material and pretty dry but to my surprise, it wasn't so bad. He made it interesting with case studies, his past experiences, and videos. Tests are hard but he's very reasonable. Overall, one of the best profs I've ever had!!
Had Mr. Bowal for my block week class. He was a very fast talker and I found it hard to follow the notes. His tests are tough but not totally impossible. Pay attention in lectures. He does know his stuff but he makes you work for the grades. All in all not the worst prof I have had.
I took this class in block week and would not recommend doing so. It's nothing to do with Peter, its just a content intensive course and you need to have time to do readings and internalize what is being taught. You have to really work for your grades but he knows what he is talking about and clearly loves it.
He is by far the worst prof I have ever had in my university career. He gets joy out of roasting his students in front of the class. His test questions make no sense, you have to literally get into his head to try and understand what he is trying to ask. He is extremely arrogant and expects his BUSINESS students to already be lawyers.
I found this professor hard to follow, and the online midterms were impossible to finish successfully in the time given. I wish I took BSEN with a different professor.
Peter is clearly very passionate about what he does. He can come across harsh and calls out on you in class, but he means well. He just wants to make sure that everyone is following along and understands what is going on. He makes an effort to go around and learn everyone's names, and even has convos with as many people as he can before class.
Everyone gives Peter a bad rating because they probably thought this class was an "easy A". As long as you put in the effort to go to class and write down what he says during class you'll be fine. Easy to get 100% on the assignment. Overall Peter is a good prof and really nice. Cares about how his students do.
Ive heard nothing but good thing about BSEN 395 as a course. But, I would not recommend it.
Peter Bowal taught this class quite well which made myself actually enjoy the course. The midterms are open book. Assignment is straight forward. However I have heard from previous students that the final is unreasonably hard and will bring down all our grades. Regardless, Peter Bowal was a joy, good prof, and made business law interesting.
one of the worst prof I've had in UC. His voice is low and he refuses to talk louder, otherwise he would wake up others in his class. He has tons of ppt and all of them are useless for your exam. To pass this course, you need luck. Grading is brutal. weird, i cant give him a zero on this grading system like he did to my written question.
Peter Bowal's definition of "easy" is only easy for him. He expects the students to be on the same intellectual level as him. The final is cumulative and the course content is heavy. No amount of studying can prepare you for the exam. Your grade is certain to take a devastating hit.
The C students and withdrawals don't like Prof. Bowal. No surprise there. He teaches how to analyze, apply and support your conclusions. That is hard work, more than memorizing. If you are willing to go there, it is transformative.
Great professor! You definitely have to show up to class, but if you do each long answer question will be a piece of cake. Once the course finished he emailed each student a couple page long email giving them feedback on how they did and could improve. He still goes out of his way to say hi to me when we cross paths. Amazing person/prof!
Prof. Bowal really knows the law and makes it unforgettable the way he tells the stories. He is passionate and caring, and very funny. If you put the work into this course, you will never regret it. One of the best profs.
This class is tough with lots of content but it's also the most interesting class I've taken in uni. You really need to go to every class, but Bowal is hilarious, kind, and tells the best stories. To get a good grade, you need to participate in class, do the practice tests, and memorize both Constitution Acts. Awesome class and prof overall.
This was a really interesting class and I enjoyed it a lot. However, this is a tough class and it has a lot of material. You must attend all lectures in order to do well in the class. The midterm was fine but the final was difficult. Overall, Prof. Bowal is caring and funny. I would highly recommend him and this class.
Great professor and lecturer, but his tests are extremely hard. All the material in his tests were covered in class and is fair game so don't miss a lecture. He essentially expects you to be a lawyer when writing the tests. He is very funny as well and his stories are very entertaining.
One of my favorites. He still says hi when I see him. Some find it difficult because they study off of the powerpoint slides, however that isn't all that is needed. I'll give you some EXTREMELY helpful advice, type your notes and type everything he says down. The questions often come from what he says in lecture and not just what is on the slides.
I seriously wanted to do well in this class, but having Peter as a prof made it IMPOSSIBLE. This man should not be teaching!! There was no textbook and his powerpoint slides were horrible. Going to class was not helpful either because he spoke way too fast and overcomplicated everything. I wish I dropped the class and took it with another prof!
Peter Bowal is fine at teaching, honestly people leaving bad reviews don't have what it takes to complete a somewhat challenging class. He really makes an effort to make boring material somewhat interesting. Tests are above average in difficulty but by no means terribly hard. Go to most or all of the lectures and do some supplementary readings.
Really good prof, super hard class. You need to attend lecture to get a good grade and do the readings. Exams are worth a lot and there is a lot of content.
Peter is a good prof but I wish his power points were more specific instead of just a couple of words. It's mandatory to go to class otherwise you'll fall behind. Do the readings before class to understand the material. The midterm and final were extremely difficult but he does allow a cheat sheet, which doesn't help much in my opinion.
Professor Bowal's lectures are interesting, and his stories are fun to listen to. However, readings are very heavy in this course and you will have to dedicate a lot of time into getting key concepts. Fortunately, prof. Bowal lets you bring cheat sheets to exams, which can be your saving grace for the final. Overall solid prof.
Amazing content. Students should be engaged during in-class questioning as this is the best way to learn as opposed to furious note-taking. Make an effort to talk with him before/ after classes.
Gave the best feedback I have received from any professor. Always says hi even though I finished class with him last year. Amazing professor!!
Peter makes you think. He asks good questions. He's rigorous but he also brings out the best in your learning.
Peter is the worst prof I have ever had. He makes me feel very unwelcome and expects you TO BE A LAWYER???? Im not (incase you were wondering) :(... He takes too long going over simple concepts and goes over difficult ones too quick. Half the time i don't even think he knows what he's talking about. Don't take this class its impossible
I am pursuing an engineering degree. Taking this course has made me rethink my career choice. This professor has been truly inspirational. Never in my life I imagined I would enjoy a law course, ever. Dr. Bowal is definitely not the kind of prof to give away grades to students (may be that is why he has some bad reviews). But he is fair to the core
He is a nice prof, encourage people to think, if you really want to learn something, choose him. but if you just want a easy course, don't go with him. The exam is quite hard, class avergae is pretty low. but he is a easy marker on essay, and the essay average is exremely high.
Peter is an example of what the legal profession seeks - hardworking, just, and ultimately fair. This class is not easy - many required readings and heavy papers. You don't get handed marks in any form. But the marks that you do receive are what you worked for, what you deserved. Would take a class again with Peter in a heartbeat.
Without a doubt the biggest regret I have in university is not taking this class with another professor. Admittedly I learned a lot in his class but his grading makes it incredibly hard to get anything over a B. Class average was a C on our 48% final exam :). If you don't answer the question exactly how he would... good luck!
Peter was a great prof who really wanted you to learn in this class. He was very nice and put a good effort in. There wasn't much that you got marked on, so it was hard to do well. He expects lots of detail in your written answers which I find fair, but can be hard to achieve. Overall a great guy but not necessarily the easiest class to take.
Honestly, this course is tough and there is a lot of material to cover. That being said, I think Peter did a great job teaching the course and his lectures were very interesting to listen too. Probably one of the most relevant courses I've taken in my degree so far.
He is an inspirational prof. He loves what he teaches and he does what he can to show you examples. The course is heavy no doubt about that and the tests are hard only to push you to study but he goes over what is expected of you. He just wants you to show him you are in the class. As long you read and show up to class you'll be fine
Lecture heavy but the lectures were not great. He talked at the students rather than to or with them. Exams were tricky, very difficult multiple choice questions. Even with major prep don't expect to do well on exams.
Professor Bowal is a fantastic prof. He pushes each student to grow each lecture. Anyone who complains about this class, claiming how unfair or impossible it is to do well is simply soft and contributes to our generation getting a bad reputation. If you keep up with the class and stay on top of your readings, you will do well. Favourite class yet.
I took BSEN 395 with Professor Bowal Fall 2017 and based on RateMyProfessor I was expecting the class to be difficult, and I was not wrong. If you go into this class with Bowal expect to study hard for tests, but expect to LEARN. READ THE CASES and be prepared for class and you will have one of the best learning experiences.
Learned a ton from this guy. He's old school. No fluff and no sitting around shooting the breeze experiential-like.
The most unfair prof I have come across so far in my student life. He believes that students have extensive knowledge of the law before even starting the course. Course notes are extremely vague, yet the exams are much more difficult and descriptive than what was ever taught in class. Avoid at all costs.
Said he would curve the final grades everyone had as the class average was around a 60 and he never did. The slides and readings only teach the basics and there are concepts on the test that arent taught (I did every reading and studied the slides).
His tests are tough and its really hard to get a B range mark. I took this class in the spring so I am assuming it was harder as he said that most people start to understand the analytical style of course later on and in spring there isn't enough time to really understand. Take this class if you are trying to be ahead or catch up.
Information overload. Peter tries to cram in way too much material in too little time.
a nice guy but an awful professor. He goes over the simplest things for way too long and blazes through the most difficult things. Goes on and on and expects everyone to know everything and do a million readings. I hope i never have to take a class with him again because his powerpoints have no info and he is so boring so its impossible to learn.
You have to read, but hey that's the subject of law. He's really a nice guy, easy to talk to and cares a lot about students. There is no useless group projects. Not an easy course but a rewarding one.
If you put in the effort, he gives effort back. Not taking this class with Bowal is a mistake - if you do well he puts out tons of opportunities for students (research, co-authorships, etc). He cares and gets to know his students. The fact that his rating on here is so low is absolutely beyond me
Do not take a class with Peter Bowal!
Bowal is the best prof I've ever had. He's caring and pushes you to work hard and do your best. You learn a lot in his course.
Very interesting lectures but very challenging exams, if you can't not take a class with him, it wont be the worst time of your life but if you are focussed on good grades, take a different prof
I took two of his courses several years ago. Looking back, his teaching was the best education I received in my whole degree.
I really liked this course and the way the professor taught it.
Now, looking back at the end of my final year, I now realize that this was my favourite course and Prof Bowal was my favourite instructor. The material is really important and useful to learn and he organizes and teaches it so well. I enjoyed and learned from every single class. He doesn't only teach concepts, but how to learn and think.
Prof Bowal was the most inspiring and complete professor I've had at university. He was very well prepared, organized the course well and always challenged us.
Professor's organized lectures and challenging approach made this course very rewarding. The textbook was helpful, and tools like unstuckstudy complemented the class well.
He is under-rated probably because he's a hard marker. But Peter's very knowledgeable and challenged us to learn about the law in ways we can use in our lives. This was definitely one of the best MBA courses and it was an elective. It should be a required course.
Tough but fair. Really brought the concepts to life. I learned a lot and would take another course with him for sure.
