Incredible professor...take this class before anything else!

Dr Carlson is a benefit to CNU and to all the students there. With his experience of the Federal prison system, he could be doing anything he wanted, and making a lot more money than he is now, but he chooses to share his knowledge with students.

Awesome teacher, best I have this semester. Really helpfull guy, if you have questions he's always willing to help. Don't be afraid to speak up in class and pay attention. Read the chapters and take notes and your'll be set. Not really a hard class at all.

Very good, had lots of stories to tell about when he was a warden. He tends to get off subject a lot so you get behind. As long as you study your notes and follow along with him in the book you are sure to get an A.

My favorite prof at CNU. Doesn't grade too hard, but you still need to do some work. 6 short papers, 8-page term paper, a couple of quizzes. Good guy, has a lot of great stories to tell. Cares a lot about his students. If you have an empty space in your schedule, take criminal justice. Great class.

He is the NICEST teacher I have ever had! He's like a giant teddy bear! Very good teacher and easy and also throws in jokes to keep it interesting. Midterm, final, and some in between assignments that are usually 2-page papers. He is an easy grader too. Take a class with him, you wont regret it.

Dr. Carlson is awsome and is one of my favorite professors! The class isn't to hard if you go to class and pay attention. he is funny 2! 2 exams 2 short papers and 2 quizes. I would deff. take him again!!!!

Dr. Carlson is awesome there is no other way to say it. He's probably one of the most helpful teachers CNU has. He cares more about his students learning the material than their ability to regurgitate material for an exam. If at all possible take a class with him, he is awesome.

This was the first time he was teaching this class, but he did a really good job with it. His background as a jail warden means that he has good experience in government and criminal justice. He's also really nice and understanding.

Great teacher. His upper level classes he makes you work, but you do learn a lot and his classes are the among the most entertaining. He lets students have discuss issues like an open forum, he just wants you to learn how to support your argument. Easily one of the best teachers at CNU.

I love Carlson! He's really funny, and loves to tell jail stories (he was a prison warden for a long time). Likes to tease students, but in a very nice way. Invites his students to his house for a BBQ at the beginning of the semester. The book was HORRIBLE, we complained every day for him to change it. A LOT of reading, but tests are pretty easy.

He's extremely helpful and competent to teach about public policy and public administration. My recommendation is that you need to participate in in-class discussions and that you work hard on your topical papers.

Great teacher. Sometimes hard to pay attention to his lectures, but what he lectures on is exactly what is on the test. You have to read the book though. He will throw in a 'part 2' to some test questions that were covered in the reading and not in the lecture. He will go over anything. Oh yea, and extra credit consisted of eatting pizza!

He is by far my favorite professor at CNU. Will help you out in any way he possibly can. He is the most intelligent person I have ever met. Passionate about government and is quite hilarious. I have never met anyone who didn't enjoy his classes.

He is a very brillant and likeable man. I wouldn't say his class is easy but its reasonable. Also on tests even if your not 100 percent sure of your answer if you give an explanation to prove your point he usually gives credit. In all his classes he goes heavy on the philosophers so know Kant Locke and Russoe. Take him if you have the opportunity

Great Class- He has lots of good stories. A about one paper a week, but you get to choose your term paper topic. Mostly lecture class, but interesting information. Good teacher I will recommend taking this class.

This is my favorite course from my 4 years. Carlson is by far the best professor that CNU has to offer and is perfect to teach this class because of his experience as a federal prison warden. As a bio major I took this class in order to fill some credits. However this class turned out to be one of my favorites this semester. Dr. Carlson by far is one of the best professors at CNU. Not only does he have the knowledge of the material but also the real world experience to back it up and provides examples that makes the material interesting

He is really good about arguing both sides of an issue without bias, has a fun sense of humor in class, and is very clear about what will be on his tests and what to study. He's great!!

He has 30 years of experience in the federal prison system being a Warden, but doesn't use his experience to make students feel stupid like some professors do. Not many tests but they were tougher. Your grade is based on attendance and studying do well on the tests and papers and you will be fine.

ABSOLUTELY loved the class with Dr. Carlson!! He treats his students with respect and like adults. His personal work stories are awesome and relate to the class topics making it easier to understand the material. He is always willing to help students, even if you have questions the day of exam. Dr. Carlson is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are interesting, engaging, and presented in a way that makes retaining course information easier. I would take every single one of my classes with him if I could! With that being said his class is by no means an easy A. You get out of it what you put into it.

Dr. Carlson is a great professor. He uses his real world experience to make the material interesting. As a senior I chose this class on the basis just for credit but thoroughly enjoyed it. To succeed all you need to do is go to class, pay attention, and review notes the night before. He cares for students and wants everyone to do well.

Overall a great professor who sticks to the material, and makes the lectures interesting by adding in his own personal stories. There isn't much outside work, just keeping up with the readings and that's to help you on the test and quizzes. Relatively easy quizzes that as long as you take notes and pay attention you will do fine on.

Dr. Carlson is a great teacher and an even better guy. I highly recommend taking Power and Politics in America with him. His personal stories make the class interesting and engaging. He also makes useful study guides for the midterm and final exam.

Dr. Carlson was my favorite professor I've ever had. His lectures are informative and interesting; I wish the class was longer than 50 minutes long. He never made any student feel dumb for not knowing a question, but instead encouraged participation. I learned so much in his class, and, for once in my life, actually enjoyed a government class.

Dr. Carlson was really willing to work with you if you went in for office hours. His lectures don't have slides to accompany them so you really have to pay attention. He is a funny guy (especially on Wednesdays). He will call you out if you appear to not be paying attention.

His test are multiple choice which are difficult but if you are ready to read the textbook you will do fine. He is a very easy grader on papers. He is a funny guy and tells a lot of stories.

Oh my gosh, sweetest and most caring professor I have ever had. He is an easy grader, and great speaker, and has a lot of past experience that makes his lectures interesting. He is one of the sweetest people, he always makes jokes and even surprised us with donuts on halloween. I would absolutely recommend taking him, he's wonderful!

I love Dr. Carlson! He is very sweet and cares about his students. His POLS 101 class is challenging though. The tests and quizzes are hard, but the papers are easy. You have to study for everything! It is lecture and powerpoint based so it can be boring and hard to follow along, but overall a good class but hard!
