One of the best professors at the university. He is very clear in class, his lectures are interesting. He puts a lot of effort into his classes and prepares amazing lecture slides (no need for a text book). If you pay attention and put in the necessary work it isn't a difficult class. His tests are very fair.
His lectures are unstructured, goes very quickly, and there is something about him that made me fall a sleep every class. Midterms and exams are HARD. He had to bell curve up, but even then I would not recommend.
Good lecturer but tough tests and exams
This class is great cause there's no textbook, and test questions are all based of his lecture slides. As long as you study these lecture slides thoroughly you will have your A.
He is really helpful and he is nice, as long as you study the materials you have your A.
Amazing and informative lecturer. He always answers his emails right away, and provides useful explanations for your questions. Midterms are okay - you definitely need to record lectures!
He's a decent professor and he really wants his students to understand the material (although he's not great at communicating information he will spend time on stuff if you ask him qeustions). You ABSOLUTELY need to go to lectures- there's no txt and memorizing his slides will earn you a 70. The class turned out to be semi-interesting.
This course is very lecture based. Not a bad thing since the Dr Peter teaches the material very well and is extremely friendly and approachable. The Biology department at York should SERIOUSLY have more professors like him. HINT: his analogies are funny but extremely important for tests.
He's not the best lecturer because he isn't very clear in terms of communicating information. But, he is helpful if you ask him specific questions. His exams are tricky, but recording the lectures may help since he asks very particular details on exams.
Not the best lecturer but the lecture themselves are clean and concise. His powerpoints are extremely clear in terms of information but he is a bit tickt. Pay attention to the little details he goes over in class and you'll do fine.
Great slides (no need for text). Attendance is must and recording can really help. Make sure you read every questions at least three times cuz he likes to trick students. mEMORIZATION OF DETAILS ARE REQUIRED BUT NOT ENOUGH YOU HAVE BE ABLE TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE. Good mark is definitely possible!!
very very detail oriented!
Dr. Cheung is an excellent lecturer. He is also great one-on-one. I would recommend seeing him in his office hours and paying close attention to detail - the tests are tricky and detail-oriented. Be aware that he may ask you about exceptions to rules, etc. or ask you to apply his examples to real life on the exams.
Great lecturer, take detailed notes and relisten to recordings for clarification. Answer the questions he asks in class and participate ! test are tricky but manageable. approachable and helpful to students who ask for extra help just dont ask redundant questions that he just went over...
Explains the information to the best of his ability, but the material is very tough to understand. Also, I found the tests to be very specific and very tough. This is the hardest Biology class I have taken at York so far.
Great lecturer, explained things really well. Really helped set the foundation for other 3rd/4th year bio courses. You could tell he was interested in what he was teaching and cared about students actually learning and doing well. Tests were challenging but if you attended lectures and spent enough time studying, getting an A was easy.
Definitely one of the hardest biology classes I've taken at york. His tests are very hard i have to say, study everything. EVERYTHING. Wish there were other profs teaching this, but he's a good lecturer. Explains things okay too but tests were crazy
Hard course but this professor tries his best to be as clear as possible. You need to attend classes, sit in the front, and take really good notes. Write only that is not on the slides. Slides are available on moodle. Also, he bumped up our grades by 9 percent so dont drop the course without getting your grade back. You will be surprised,
He is good at explaining concepts but does so a bit quickly so make sure to record the lectures. Tests were pretty fair but required more than just memorizing the material
One of the toughest courses I've ever taken. Unfortunately it's a pre-req and I don't think anyone else teaches it. You have to put a lot of effort into this course as the tests are ridiculously detailed. The content of the course is interesting but he makes it super boring with his monotonous voice -- good luck listening to the lecture recordings.
You need to record every lecture and write down everything he says. You have to memorize numbers, and also have to be able to apply the concepts you've learnt. He gives very detailed questions, and some can be very confusing and you will have to ask him to clarify it. His lecture is a meh, he's not the best at explaining.
He's a great prof! No need to record lectures... just go to class and take notes! Everything is easy and straightforward :)
No textbooks required but if you need resources to clarify certain topics, one of the books can be read online. Attendance is a MUST. It's all lecture-based. So know and understand the slides and what he elaborates on. His real-life analogies actually aided me well in tests. Some memorization but mostly understanding the concepts.
His lectures were very detail oriented. If you want to do well on his tests, memorize every single detail on his lecture slides. I found that his test qs were mostly memorization based rather than understanding concepts. He is very helpful and patient when you ask him questions. Attending his office hours are definitely helpful!
First thing first, he'll tell you that you're not required to memorize tiny details, and should rely on logic and reason. BY 3RD YEAR YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER! He has a mix of unusually easy questions and extraordinarily detailed ones on his (mostly) MC tests. No textbook, no assignments, etc., so I highly suggest you record lectures to do your best.
There's no textbook so you must attend lectures. He's often unclear and tests are not as "straight forward" as he says. Try to avoid this prof!
His lectures are incredibly uninteresting. There's no textbook to follow so you're forced to attend his class. He posts the lectures after the class and does recaps that are more like adding details he forgot to mention. His tests are absolutely absurd and super specific. Avoid at all costs, don't waste your time and money.
Prof Cheung was personally the best prof to teach Molec. The concepts are difficult and he tends to make them easy. However, the course will not be easy and you have to put in work. His tests can be tricky so you have to go to the lectures and know everything in detail.
Prof. Cheung is perhaps the best prof I have had for bio-based courses. There is no required textbook, and attendance is NOT mandatory provided you have ALL of the lecture recordings. For tests, memorize all of what he says, the more the better. His tests are a combination of easy questions and relatively complex ones (application based).
He is a very caring professor and tries his hardest to help students with questions. However, I found the class very dry. Although he tries his hardest to make the material easy to digest, he was not the clearest professor when it came to explaining concepts. The tests require memorization of EVERYTHING he says.
Amazing Professor and Lecturer but extremely difficult exams and questions. That being said Peter was the best Bio prof I have ever had.
I am not sure how this prof has such great reviews. He is a nice guy but presents dry material in the driest way, which makes his lectures even harder to understand. His tests are crazy with the most specific questions. Unless this is the only course you're taking, don't expect anywhere close to an A :/
Dont fall for the Dont memorize the details guys on the first day. You should know better by third year. You have to memorize every single thing. Poor oratory, too focused on the small details (which again you need to know) and takes A LOT of your time to prepare and study for.
Prof Cheung may end up being the best or worst prof you have as others have mentioned. He does simplify concepts in class and takes time in the following lecture to recap. Having said this, he doesn't record lectures or provide lecture slides before class. Exams Qs can range from simple memorization to harder application based Qs. Tough course.
Cheung is a decent prof but far from the best I've had. His course consisted of 2 midterms and a final; all MCQ's that were, overall, very difficult. There is no textbook and he doesn't record lectures so there's not too much to go off of for study. Worst grade in any BIOL course at yorkU, MEMORIZE EVERYTHING and maybe you'll get a B/B+.
Cheung focuses more on making his material to look harder then it is than actually making sure students learn. He does not provide lecture material before class and puts up pictures and starts talking by saying "this" goes "there" and such and if u fall behind good luck understanding ur own recordings. Avoid him if possible Horrible "prof"
If you want to get a good grade with him, you have to go to all lectures, record them (because you really will have to re-listen) and pay attention to all his examples, usually theyre on the test. Also asks random memorization questions from the slides, so basically memorize everything. He writes the tests, so try to enroll on his section.
Peter gets a bad rep. It's undeserved. The course is tough, but Peter goes through the material and is willing to answer Qs and clarify concepts during and after class. His explanations are sometimes a bit laboured and require review after class to fully understand. Recording lectures, asking questions and memorizating will go a long way.
I found this online version of Molec 1 to be more enjoyable and organized than I thought it would be. We would have to watch pre-recorded lecture ahead of time and he does live Zoom classes during the scheduled class time to recap the previous lecture material and answer questions. The course was very difficult but also very interesting!
The way the course is designed and taught is terrible. No way to do any practice, the material tested is not always what is emphasized, also are not allowed to dispute grades even when questions have clear flaws in them. For the amount of time invested, got a terrible grade. In any other course could have easily had A/A+ with less time spent.
The hardest course of the bio department. He knows so much and he tries to teach what he learned in 50 years to students in a semester. There were over 600 slides and the exams were so detailed and never had enough time. this course needs practice assignments. He also didn't change the outline for the pandemic. 50% online final THAT WAS HARD.
Honest answer? If u actually study the material and attend the lectures diligently, you'll get an A. A+ is harder to achieve but not impossible. Prof was really helpful and accessible during office hours. I recommend to stay on track with the weekly recorded lectures and attend the recap sessions ALWAYS! Q&a sessions and office hours were good too.
Peter is a great professor. His lectures were clear and easy to understand. The material itself wasn't the easiest, you definitely have to put in a lot of time and effort in studying. I would recommend recording his lectures in person to go back and make sure you didn't miss anything. Overall great prof but difficult course!
Peter Cheung is actually a really good professor with clear explanations during lectures and with willingness to answer as many questions as possible. He tried to do the best for the students to understand the material. It is a heavy course but I think he breaks it down very well. He also accommodates a lot. I definitely recommend him.
Molecular Bio is a tough course, but Dr. Cheung explains difficult concepts fairly well. It is important to work hard at this course because the tests are detailed and some questions are tricky. However, Dr. Cheung's office hours are helpful and he also clarifies concepts if you email him. The course overall was challenging, but very interesting.
The prof is good at teaching the course but the test doesnt match with the stuff he teaches. Especially the short answers , they are so detailed that its very hard to answer it properly. It was so hard to view your exams to see what you have done wrong but the prof was against viewing the midterms. you cant view your finale exam that was 50%
Make sure you stay on top of everything every week and do not cram otherwise you will do terribly in this course. Also ask questions in office hours and study hard because his exams are super-specific and will throw you off guard the first time
He is not a good professor. His midterms are alright, but the final was pretty ridiculous in terms of difficulty, compared to the midterms at least. He does not allow students to question some of his stupidly worded multiple-choice questions, because he knows better than anyone else. He does not really care much for his students.
Very good at explaining things and lectures are clear. The tests are very specific and difficult sometimes but everything is from lecture material. Can get a decent grade by attending lectures and staying on top of material as there's a lot of stuff to understand.
Write down basically everything he says thats extra from the slides and it will literally all be on the midterms/exams. No surprises at all. If you study hard and pay attention to his examples in class then if you don't get an A+ something is seriously wrong with you.
I would say that the content towards the start of this course is very simple but towards the last few chapters it can get very detailed and difficult to understand. No assignments and only midterms and final. I found the midterms and final to be simple and content was straight from the lectures. lectures were boring to watch but he explains well
You need to pay attention during lectures and recap sessions. He respond to emails quickly and always answers students questions. Overall, a very good prof.
This prof is hands down the worst prof in York. Firstly, he's a tough & annoying grader. He takes grades off for the smallest details. Secondly, on top of watching his 3+ hours of lectures, you have to watch 4 MORE hours of his "recap lectures" per week where he goes through new information(7hrs total/week). Could go on & on but 300 character limit
Dr. Cheung is an amazing lecturer! the course itself is difficult but he knows how to make students succeed. His recap sessions at the beginning of each lecture were very helpful and gave me a second chance at understanding the material. its memorization heavy so make sure to memorize everything
Very unclear about how he wants his test qxns answered and marked very harshly. Don't take this prof if u have the option, he's so picky that u either have the exact details he wants or you lose out on sm marks. Doesn't curve and also rushes in lectures.
Dr. Cheung is a great biology professor. Was extremely clear in his lectures and his tests are exactly based on what he teaches, no tricks at all. He has structured this course in a way that makes it so easy to retain information. Made me love molecular biology. Also his recap sessions are so helpful.
I enjoyed the lectures a lot. The midterm questions r almost all straight from the lecture material.
He is truly a really good lecturer. I took this class in the summer and he cares for students to come to class and wants them to understand. Tests were difficult, majority of the stuff comes from the lecture. Haven't written the exam yet, I expect it to be hard though. He really takes his time with the recap sessions every class as well.
Lectures are heavy and you must keep up with them, try to memorize everything (except stuff like dates and names) and you should be good. He is seriously a wonderful explainer and respectful.
Exam questions were directly from the lecture slides and what he says. Make sure you study all the experiments he shows as they will definitely show up. He does recap sessions at the start of every lecture which helped solidify our understanding of the material. He really wants to see students succeed and is eager for student participation in class
If you have to take biol3110 take it with Peter over Chen. I did not watch every lecture but the recap gets you up to date. I would say after every class try to skim over the slides/notes or do a quizlet. Just do something that forces you to memorize over time you'd be able to draw connections and that would make the course much easier.
He is very rude and doesn't allow questions during lectures
Professor is clear and direct with how he teaches the lecture material. Tests are from his lectures (lecture slide notes + what he says in class) and he gives subtle cues on the questions in the midterm that help you answer them. He is one of the easier profs out of all of them who teach 3000 level bio courses. I recommend taking this course.
One of my favourite professors ever. It is a little hard to follow along during his lectures but if you review the recordings afterwards, it is really easy to understand. His midterms were very fair, I honestly found them pretty easy. The final exam was a bit harder but thats as expected. Also, material from this course was most interesting so far!
I've only attended the 1st lecture of his BIOL 3110 S1 2024 course, and I can tell right off the bat that he is genuinely awesome! So caring and compassionate for his students. Always asks us if we have questions and provided unconditional support during the first lecture. The material is invaluable and something all students should be educated in!
Great professor, but the course is way too dense. Tests are quite challenging and require you to know everything, even the smallest pieces of information buried within more broader information. Some questions challenge you to link multiple concepts which can be tricky. Little chance for error since marking scheme 25%, 25%, 50%.
The course content was intensive, but the lecture on molecular biology was exceptionally well-organized, clear, and engaging. The professor demonstrated patience and respect while answering questions, creating a supportive learning environment. Overall, it was an outstanding course.
I don't understand why some people hate him; his lectures are so organized, and the entire flow is coherent.
This prof does recap slides, which at first seems helpful but in fact the recap slides 90% of the time have more information than the slides he is recapping. The midterms have only about 30% relevance to the lecture slides. The short answer questions are ridiculously difficult and unless you have a photographic memory you will be struggling.
Run away. The midterms are so unfair and do not relate to the important point he emphasizes in lecture. The short answers are terrible
Do not take this class with this professor. He gives no practice questions, and his midterms are not fully based on his lectures like he says it is. The midterms are 60% based on things he didn't cover in class and he is a very unfair prof.
He wants his students to do really bad. There is no textbook, and no practice questions for the midterms he gives us. He says his lecture slides + what he says in class will be the only thing tested on, but the midterm has content that was not even relevant to what was covered in class, which is really unfair. Save your time and money.
Don't even bother studying just go to sleep instead. Most unfair midterms and worst professor known to man
don't take this professor if you care about your GPA. This guy will ask you test questions like you're a graduate student and not undergraduate with no remorse. Also does not answer questions properly on tests no help
Terrible prof with extremely difficult midterms, feels like he throws topics into a hat and randomly chooses which one to test on
never take this course
The first midterm for this class was fair, straight from slides and easy to score an A if u studied well. However, his second midterm was so unfair the questions were not even from the material taught in class and there were just too many questions. I can't imagine what the final is going to look like, no point in wasting your time with this prof.
Prof explains material in depth and even recaps the previous lecture every class. Exams are fair if you put in effort to study bc the course is info dense in general. He responds fast and answered all my questions thoroughly. Study the slides in detail + go to class and you'll be fine. ppl complaining just want minimal effort classes lol.
TAs mark short answers hard, take marks off+don't even write why. The question everyone's saying wasn't on slides, actually was but in a tiny subnote (still annoying but technically fair). Typical 3000 bio course, so can't blame him for it being hard. He uses analogies + recaps stuff in detail, I wish his syllabus was less harsh tho (25/25/50).
He sucks i was stupid for choosing him as my prof, i got fooled by the reviews here but i will be honest with you future students… dont take him his course outline sucks 2x25 midterms and a final of 45, not even quizzes or assignments to help you boost, 6 words: he sucks, dont take his class
Took it twice—funny when people say “just take it with another prof.” That may help a little, but students forget 3110 is one of the densest bio courses, the difficulty stays and you need serious effort. Syllabus is harsh (few assessments) + needs more resources for students. Sheng's tests were the same, but she ran reviews + gave review Qs.
This is a hard course no matter the professor. If you only study a few days before exams and don't really understand the material, you'll fail. The exams were fair. To do well, attend lectures, take detailed notes, keep up with the material and be able to apply what you learn, just memorizing won't work.
Extremely hard course grading with only midterms and a final, does not give practise exams and will test you on whatever he feels like. Do not take this prof if you are able to.
He makes his midterms unnecessarily hard, asking questions irrelevant to what he emphasizes most in lecture. Then there's so many questions and not enough time.
