Great teacher. Must buy the books. He give's quizes on the readings. No test, just a takehome midterm and final at the end. He write's clear notes and he know's what he's teaching.
I wish he offered more history courses. He is a great professor and you learn alot from him.Very fair grader and is highly intelegent in his area of study (PCS) ROCKS !!!
Best professor i've taken so far, i've recommended him to everyone i know, knows what he's talking about, fair grader, very down to earth, take home midterm, final is open book, you have to read because he quizes but he goes over everything from the reading and always starts off the class with a song that relates to the topic...TAKE HIM!
He is one of the best professor I've had so far
PCS is the man. Highly recommended. Greatest method of teaching I have ever encountered. Just do the reading. A bit too partisan in his class, but it's all in good fun.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!! And i hate any type of writing intensive class, but he was just awesome. Great Professor
Outstanding. Best professor i've had so far.
Excellent! We need more professors like him!He made me love history!
Very clear in teaching. Fair, although its alottttttttttttttt of reading. Tries to be entertaining. Not one of those profs who just reads from a sheet, he knows what he's talking about.
he knows his history...smart entertaining...love the music
Awesome Professor! i wish there were more teachers like him sincere, funny, passionate about his subject and KNOWS what he is talking about!
Good, but a little full of himself and not really open to other ideological opinions. The music's okay, but a little gimmicky too.
Extremely entertaining. He doesnt take SH*T from anyone. He is the BEST!!!!!!! Take home midterm and final. I walked away with more knowledge of history than i thought I would. He really is something. Take him. Quizes every week but you only have to answer 2/10 to get the whole 10pts.
extremely good professor, very helpful and interesting. He made me love history! I really recommend him if you want and interesting, easy A class.
THE BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR EVER! :)*AND HOT TOO!*
INCREDIBLE professor. The most intelligent professor I've had. The man really knows his stuff and his enthusiasm made me SO MUCH more interested in the material we were learning. I have a new found interest and concern for a lot of the things going on in the world today because of him. And as for the comment below me, I DEFINITELY agree ;)
PCS is the man! You might not agree with everything that he has to say but so what people this is what college and learning are all about. He makes his class interesting and thought provoking and makes you want to show up ansd listen to him. Not difficult if you do the reading and talk up a bit in class. Take home midterm and final too. :)
He's okay but overated and as for his politics, it would be more educational to have a more openminded professor or one who could see where some of us are coming from
hes a great professor. very fair, very enthusiastic, very helpful. an easy A if u put some effort n keep up with the readings.
Excellent! my favorite history professor. I constantly recommend people to take his class because he knows exactly how history should be taught. I wish he taught European classes :-(
I don't know what people are talking about here. Yeah, he's a nice guy and does make class interesting but the amount of work that he gives is just ridiculous. I understand that it's a writing intensive class but come on. In addition to five short papers (3) pages, there is a take home midterm and final which is each a 6 page essay.
Best Prof I've ever had. Taking his film & history class next. Gives a quiz on the reading 10 times a semester so you MUST read. They are worth 2 points on your grade each. That is the hardest part of the class and if you arn't lazy then it's easy. Everything else is take home which is easy if you put in some effort. Great teacher and class.
He is a very good teacher although he is worth taking the writing intensive history with b/c he is demanding. Reading is a must b/c of the quizzes (sometimes gives take home). Class participation is manditory if one wants an A. A major plus is he plays music b4 each class. Overall he is a teacher worth taking but be prepared to do work!
Great class, lots of work, participation is a must for your grade. gives ten quizzes, two papers. Must read class. gets the class involved. Cool dude puts music b4 each class. if you like to read take this class you'll def learn alot. Imigration Hist
Great overall teacher, but he is way too political.
the best in 12 years as an auditor
What a class! He's awesome. Do the reading and the rest is just watching movies. Does a great job relating the movies to history. Best class I've ever taken.
Amazing Teacher! I hated History until I had PCS...
Constantly apologizing for being a white male professional, which can get extremely irritating after a while. However, a good teacher overall.
He is so far the best teacher ive had. He knows his history, and makes it really interesting. He feeds you all the quotes you need to site and he's extremely helpful..take him if you can. you wont regret it!!!!
Great class Immigrant american history Great prof, funny, makes you study, lots of quizzes. You must come to class, papers are easy.
Great and helpful professor. I hope that he never leaves. Anybody who takes him will definitely learn.Great class to take if you are considering being a Social Studies Teacher. He gives quizzes every week, and if it is a writing intensive class, then you have to write 5 short papers about the topic. He gives you 5 topics to select. Great Professor.
PCS is a brilliant professor, QC should have more professors like him.The class is very interesting and the papers are ok-just follow his guidelines and u'll do fine.
Great professor, quizzes every week bc he expects everyone to read prior to class, take home midterm and final essay, class discussions are interesting, great knowledge on the topics discussed, i would defenitely take him again.
A teacher who actually takes pride in his work, and really puts the time in when grading your papers (he writes TONS of notes all over them). You will need to do 30-40 minutes of reading for each class (if 2 classes/week), but its interesting reading. Easy A if you plan on attending class everyday, 2 essays are not easy but he grades fairly easy
Great Professor, original, different. The class requires a lot of work but the intensity of the work makes you feel like you're really in college. Best History professor (next to Prof. Alteras and Prof. Scott) If you're a History major take him you'll be glad you did
PCS is one of the best professors i ever had. His use of visual media and interesting lectures will keep you entertained. The coursework is demanding but if you do the readings you should be fine. Another thing, before class he always puts on some great music from David Bowie to A Tribe Called Quest. How can you not take this guy?
PCS is very enthusiastic about history and teaching. He gives a quiz every week on the reading material, take-home midterm (essay) and a take-home final (essay) on simple topics. He's one of the best history profs!!
PCS is the best Prof. that I have EVER encountered! I was enthusiastic about reading for class each week, and I NEVER open my textbooks.Expect a quiz each week Just do the readings. Take Home Midterm and take home Final he gives very specific instructions Follow them! Also, one more thing, MLK JR, Did NOT promote Violence! Important to know 4 Class!!
PCS is great. i loved going to his class. and even though he gave a quiz every week, they were random and fun, just do the reading. he is very clear and concise about what he wants on his only two exams: the midterm and the final. you cant fail any of the exams! he was great!
The man knows how to grab your attention. His use of exernal material other than the text keeps things interesting. Overall a fun ride with a good soundtrack.
This professor is superb. He is well versed in modern Amrican culture. If you want to learn about the Sixties, he is the ticket. Read assigned material before class (a quiz a week), and follow his corrections (should you have any) on your essays.
PCS was the best professor I've ever had. His use of media (music, video) enhance the learning of the material. Quiz on the reading each week, take-home midterm and finals. Class was beyond enjoyable and the only one which i looked forward to attending on a regular basis.
I loved "PCS," by far the best professor Ive ever had. He actually motivated me to read the book, something I rarely do for any of my other classes. He was funny, refreshing, and straight forward. The work was moderate, but well worth it, you actually want to learn in his class. He really makes you think. Take him, youre crazy not to. PS: hes HOT.
350 words is not enough to describe "PCS" He teaches HISTRY in a NON BORING WAY! He uses Audio, Visuals & anything else to make u see what it was like durin that era he is teachin. Reading is A MUST, if u don't you're screwed! But if u do, an A is very easy to get! My 1 regret is I took him in the short Winter session & NOT the Spring! HES THE MAN!
PCS is truly one of the best at Queens College. He has a passion for American History. There are 14 weekly quizzes, a take home midterm, and a take home final in his class. There is a lot of reading but you will enjoy it and you need to read for the quizzes which are very easy. I would definetly recommend him and would love to take his class again.
This man is amazing. He truly cares for what he teaches and u can feel it. He made me wanna come to class and trust me i dont say that about aloy of classes. im making history my makor cause of him and i am so sad that i couldnt take him this sem but i will next MAY GOD ALWAYS B;ESS HIM 4 EVER HE DESERVES IT-Teji Kaur
Not having PCS this semester is upsetting, he really made me want to come to class and fall in love with the material. Quiz on the reading each week, answer 4/10 right for full credit. Uses music, movies, graphics, primary sources; everything available to create the most comprehensive view of american history.i look foward to taking him again soon
he's a professor that knows what he's doing. he uses music, videos, etc. he's the BEST Prof i've had. i mean come on what other class do you know is going to show you clips from Family Guy. His class is so interesting. Awesome Professor
he is One of the BEST!!He looks Irish and could talk w accent(hot!) Highly recomended, not an easy A because he is an actually good professor but will make u love history.
He is an excellent professor, who really wants to improve the writing abilities of his students. Taking this class improved my writing skills.
PCS is one of the best at QC. His classes are the best and he really knows his stuff. Participate in class, do all the reading, pay attention and you will do good. Weekly quizzes, take home midterm and final. Overall one of the best, not to mention he is good looking with a great accent.
Very charismatic. He will however, put 4 lights behind his head & tell you there are actually 3. Then you will get a quiz from him that asks ?how many lights were behind my head??. You know there was 4 but you must answer 3 on his quiz to get the question right. What do you do?
Favorite prof so far. Made me enjoy history and explained it so well. He is extremely charismatic and entertaining, shows videos and music that relate to what we learn, also tells funny stories. Class interesting but VERY reading based. Know the readings and you will probably do great, make sure to participate too. Loved the British accent.Take him!
PCS is a great Professor. Taking his classes in the winter was one of the best decisions that I ever made. You learn so much in such a short period of time. Quizes are based on reading, tests are based on class notes. I would highly recommend this Professor to any student!
OMG! this guy's amazing! I was so lucky to have him for my winter class! points for participation, quizzes are extremely easy!!! Mid-term is based on quizzes. Final same. If you read, you will do just fine! He explains material in a manner of passion, uses visual effects: movies, music, pictures. I got A+, and if I was a girl I would kiss him!!!
Listen to everyone and take this professor! He makes history so interesting that time passes by fast. He entertains us with movies, clips, and his jokes! Knows a lot of history and makes u want to be a hist major! quizzes every wk but really easy 2 midterm papers and 2 tests all easy! b/c he tells u whats on them! TAKE HIM FOR EASY A+
I hated history before his class. He changed everything. I love his classes. He is amaziing! He is the best.
I have NO IDEA why so many people are enamored with this man?s ability to play a CD or use a VCR in his class. He does not teach a history course he uses his class as a pulpit to counter act what he ASSUMES you have been taught your whole life a he admits it. There is zero objectivity and he grades & treats people according to how much they blindly
Interesting that people who normally don?t like history like him. That is b/c he talks about his own personal life & current events more then the history his class is supposed to cover. & he also simply lies to make political points or to disseminate his VIEW of history. He is entertaining, I will give him that, but honestly he does not teach histo
I must disagree with some who complain about PCS. I always debated him on his views and he never tried to brainwash me or held it against me. I got a good grade, and disagreed with him over every issue all semester. One of the least indoctrinating professor at the school that I've had so far.
Taken PCS for 2 classes (104&276W)Amazing in both. Makes history interesting with audio-visual. uses current events to look at the past and combats all that you've learned in the past, while allowing you to make your own decision. would take him for any and every class offered at queens college...definitely the best professor that i've encountered.
two PCS classes, two amazing semesters. Immigration history provides one of the most interesting projects i've done--researching your own past and seeing how it fits into the historical narrative. Makes class fun, uses songs, movies, cartoons, etc to teach, and gives students a reason to want to wake up and go to class. Best professor at QC!
I've been to 3 different schools in two years, and PCS is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He's the main reason why I'm staying put at Queens. History majors, when you find yourself hating your major (like I did), take one class with PCS and you'll realize why you declared in the first place.
There aren't enough positive adjectives in the English language to adequately describe PCS. He is the best professor I've ever had. Take him! I wish he could teach all of my history classes.
Too much reading assignments (driving me crazy)but easy quiz.
He is the best prof I've had inQC. Very smart and funny. He makes class interesing and his reading is fun to read. Wish he teaches more classes. Love this man!!!
So sweet, so helpful, and so funny! Any class with PCS is an amazing experience. He really wants all of his students to do well. He goes out of his way to make class interesting and easier for us. He is brilliant.
i love his class. Actually im taking his class now. I didnt take final exam yet I still love him. He is a funny guy. I had to study for pop quiz every week but easy multiple choice mid term and final and take home essay. If you put your effort you will be fine in his class.
I'm gonna be honest. Yes class is mandatory (pop quizzes), yes there is heavy textbook use and yes he will be harsh on your papers. BUT he's the best prof. on campus. He truly cares about his students! For this WI class, he accepted drafts that probably took him about 2 hrs to edit EACH. He's amazing. Def. recommend him, I'm taking him again.
THE.BEST.
Best history teacher I have ever had, no other I ever encountered was as interesting as him, he made me enjoy history a lot. Wish he taught more classes!!
he is AMAZING. hands down one of the best professors i've had. take this class!! or any class that he teaches!...i looked forward to his classes and learned A LOT, you just have to do your part. he truly cares about his students and it shows.
Perfect! Absolutely perfect!
So fricken funny and knowledgeable. Everything that he has taught me has stuck. He's exactly what future teachers should aspire to be like.
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. IF YOU GRADUATE QUEENS COLLEGE WITHOUT TAKING ONE OF HIS CLASSES IS YOUR LOSS.
THE WORST PROFESSOR!!!HATE HIM!!! THE QUIZ ARE HARD TRUST ME!!!!he doesnt care about HIS STUDENT AT ALLLL!!!
He does care about his students. A lot, actually.
I love PCS! I took him for 104 and thought he was absolutely amazing! I took him again this semester for 276W which is immigration history. He assigns two papers which helped me become a better writer. He marked papers with great detail and had them back by the next class! I can't wait to take him next semester for 370W!
He knows his stuff! but if you want to read your eyes out do not take him. His class is fun but the readings are too much to keep up with especially if you lead a very busy life. Quiz every week more than 30 pages to read essays are graded in detail! Been an "A" writer all my life according to him "C"
he's really funny and made the class very interesting for me. He assigns alot of reading and u have to do it because he gives a quiz. As long as you read, the quizzes are really easy.. almost a freebie.. if u do poorly on the quizzes and exams it's most likely because you're stupid
This teacher makes History extremely interesting. I took his winter class, and there was ALOT OF READING, around 30 pages a day. If you read, you can get an A+ easily, because his quizes, which are based on the readings, are easy when you read. Tests are based on his lecture. If you don't like to read, or think you can't, don't take this teacher.
Watch out- he or someone deletes comments on here. Lots of reading , quizzes and two papers. The final paper is 2 parts. Will be like 15 pages. Professor will make you feel like you have never written anything in your academic career. Very critical.
PCS is too perfect.
I have taken 4 classes with this professor and he is the very best Queens college has to offer. Keeps his students interested in the material and explains the material very well. He is not easy by any means, but his classes are very rewarding.
He's the best. I feel fortunate that I have the opportunity to take another class with him! Even when the subject gets boring there's enough jokes cracked and pop-culture references to keep you awake. You will read if you want a good grade, there's no way around it but that's the only downside. Reading can only benefit you.
Thanks PCS!!! He was a substitute in my 103 class in the fall and i learned more from him in one day than i did from my professor all semester. I registered for his 104 for the winter that same night. I hate history with a passion but he gave me a new respect for it and made it fun.
This was my first winter course and I couldn't have asked for a better professor! The class came off as challenging at first because it is a 15 week course in 15 days;with that being said it was more than 2-3hours of reading a night. Quizzes daily and no papers(winter course),he does give essays in most of his other courses. TAKE HIM!
His winter class was a life changing experience. He's the best professor at Queens College. No papers, daily quizzes, multiple choice midterm and final. His class was so easy, but it was so inspiring! I now see race differently and I feel so much more enlightened and open-minded. He's the most amazing professor I've ever had! MUST TAKE!
wow, greatest professor ive ever had he really knows his stuff and hes funny and cool. made even history so interesting
PCS is hands down the best professor in the history department. He keeps it interesting with movies & songs in the lesson. Take him & make sure to participate for extra pts!!
He is the best Professor ever!!!
Very caring! I tend to have trouble with reading comprehension; from the beginning of the semester he was very helpful. I met with him twice every week, the day before we had class to go over readings. He went above and beyond to help me. He was very helpful and fair. Class is entertaining and very informative. I learned a great deal. Work is easy.
I think he is such an amazing + handsome professor. He's organized, class is always interesting, it's easy to get in touch with (office hours or email). I loved going to his class. Reading and participation is a must. Not such an easy grader when it comes to papers, but it's totally rewarding in the end. Would be a shame not to take his class.
PCS is the greatest. If you show up to class, volunteer your thoughts, pay close attention to the MLA rules he sets out, and do the reading, you get an A. Extremely bright and entertaining professor with a knack for stimulating class discussion
Great professor with great knowledge. Definitely want to take another class with him.
He is very enthusiastic about teaching and makes the class interesting. you get a pop reading quiz every week, so you must read the textbook and the required reader before each class. You will have to write two papers about two primary sources from either the textbook or reader. His tests are straight from the notes.
Just take him
This is a new class offered at QC as part of Pathways. PCS is excellent at keeping class discussion interesting however this class should be taken with caution. The course material is VERY disturbing (sexual violence) and he is extremely critical of writing. His criticism is extremely helpful however it makes getting an A very difficult.
The best!!
PCS is perfect, passionate, and knowledgeable. It is really enjoyable to sit in his class and listen to his lecture. I m never tired of his class. He is so good-looking! and so funny! If you want to smile, take his winter class!
Professor Conolly-Smith is sooo amazing!! His lectures and notes are so thorough and helpful! He is really nice and makes you interested in American History! he's very passionate about history! ONE THING though is we had pop quizzes once a week based on the reading! but I have to say it wasn't bad. TAKE HIM!!!
Easy class as long as you do the readings which are easy but time consuming. You get quizzed once a week but the questions are super easy if you read. He is a GREAT lecturer and the furthest thing from a monotone professor. Great passionate and made the class interesting by making it relate-able.
He is a perfect history professor. Really knows how to teach and is passionate about it. The only thing is that his readings are long - quizzes are pretty easy but if you're not good at remebering things they can be tricky. Overall its a great class.
I have a feeling these ratings are screened. Yes, this professor cares about his teachings. However, if you don't participate, he'll ridicule you and make you feel worthless. If you have a disorder like I do that prevents participation, don't sign up for his classes; he'll just end up making you suicidal in the end.
Great professor! He is very knowledgeable, funny, and interesting. He'll give pop quizzes once a quiz based on your class readings, therefore, he'll pretty much give you 4 point a week just for doing the reading. Take him!
too much work... gives a pop quiz every week so you HAVE to read the book. There is a midterm and final test about 20-25 multiple choice questions based on the power points during class so make sure to go to class. Also a final paper but its only 2-3 pages.
Best History teacher i had so far. He is very interesting. To pass all you have to do is pass all his quizzes and tests. As long as you aren't absent on the day of the quizzes you don't have to come into class, however i recommend you do since he goes over the readings required for that day. Easy grader!!
One of the toughest professor I have ever had. Professor PCS was absolutely ready to go to any lengths to see my writing improve. If you want to learn and challenge yourself I would recommend this class.
He''s great. Just take him.
the professor is good and all but he gives each week a pop quiz and all on the reading he gives you too read so be ready, my huge issue was reading the book and then the next day forget everything, so as for me this class was not so easy for me when most of my classes asked me to read every single week.
Tests are very simple and straight forward, he's not out to get you. As long as you do the readings just about every night and pay attention in class you won't have any troubles getting a good grade in PCS's class. Very dedicated to history and telling its story. Lectures are not mandatory though highly recommended. Two papers about 2 pages long.
PCS is an amazing professor. You can tell he is very passionate about history and he has amazing and hilarious lectures that will keep you entertained. He does give a pop quiz once a week, but if you do the reading, you're fine. Once you get use to his quizzes, you can guess what will be on it. BONUS: he's British. I love when British people talk.
One word: perfection.
PCS is the best history professor ever!!! He is so passionate about history and explains everything very clear. He used a very funny way to make his point. LOVE HIM! I'm taking winter session, the class is very easy. Reading and quiz is everyday, also need to answer questions during class for participation points. Exam is straight forward.
Took his winter class and I loved it! His lectures were very informative and easy to understand. Midterm and final are simple multiple choice questions. You will spend 2-3 hours reading the textbook everyday to prepare yourself for the daily quizzes. Overall, the class is not difficult and he is hilarious!
Best teacher I've ever had, incredibly clear and makes the class interesting, and take this from a guy who's looking for the easiest classes possible, the class was great and there was a good amount of work but i would 100% no doubt in my mind take it, if i could take him again i would.
He's amazing! Great lecturer, participation required, wish I could take him again!
PCS is a pretty great professor. I didn't really like the weekly quizzes but as long as you do the reading you'll be fine.
Great Professor, Great Lectures.
Just do the work and read. Easy A, must take really good at lectures.
Cool professor, great taste in music, funny guy and sets the standard for professors at QC. Knows the material and teaches it well. Read up and get an A. Simple
I absolutely hate history more than anything but PCS made it possible for me to not only get an A but to understand history and actually enjoy it. He makes you work for your grade but makes it very possible to do well. Without a doubt take his class. You won't regret it.
I hate history so much yet he makes it my favorite subject with his great teaching. He gives reading every night and pop quiz the next day and makes you participate. Honestly, participation isn't my thing but everything is in the reading and you only have to cooperate a few ideas in the class. He's a great professor, really enjoys teaching.
He's honestly really passionate about what he teaches, he's actually really funny too. The class is really easy but don't take his grading methods for granted. A quiz every week based on readings done at home (they count a lot towards your grade). But he's a very good teacher, I've learned a lot his in class. I wouldn't mind taking him again.
Best professor ever
Peter Conolly Smith know as PCS is a "must take" instructor at QC. Makes every class fun and exciting, every session a joy to attend. Weekly quizzes, mid-term, and final exam are simple and easy. Also a research paper. If you come to class and do the readings, you should get a high grade. Most important, you will actually enjoy this class..
PCS for short, is a great professor. One of my favorite classes and I did learn a lot. Do the reading bcus that is worth more than half of your grade. His accent, personality, and commitment to teaching makes history tolerable. Would take him again.
Great professor! Gives weekly quizzes that are worth more than half the grade. Although hes pretty rude hes an easy grader and only gives quizzes, midterm, and final along with 2 papers.
Professor Conolly-Smith is a great professor and his lectures are great! You can tell he loves his job and the subject he is teaching.
Awesome professor! His lectures are NOT boring. He is dedicated to his work and it shows. Definitely would take it again and again!!! However, you HAVE to do the readings which come up on the homework and tests.
My favorite teacher. I have taken 3 different classes with him and did great in all of them. Tells exactly where your grade comes from. READ THE BOOK! There are quizzes every week on the readings in all of his classes. Midterm and final in HIST104. 4 Papers in 392W and 276W, no midterm or final. He made me love history even more.
Amazing professor. A lot of reading which is mandatory, as there is a pop quiz once per week on the reading. It's a very fair class and he is a very fair professor. Follow his instructions and you will pass. You must show up, because he does not offer any make-up quizzes and each is worth 4 points to your final grade.
PCS is GREAT! I literally sucked at history before this course, but PCS actually made me understand everything. He's really funny and honestly an easy A, just do your readings! They're not unreasonable. He gives random quizzes a week so be prepared, but seriously just read the textbook and you'll pass. Only two papers and they're not hard at all.
Peter Conolly-Smith is the best professor I have ever had for history. I have learned a lot in his class due to the way he teaches. Whatever grade he gives you, it's up to you. There is no curve or extra credit but all of his work is straight up. Don't miss class. Take all the quizzes and do all of the readings and you can get an A.
Simply amazing professor and hilarious. I really enjoyed him and the class, although the readings every day and quizzes every week were tedious. He made it worth it though. I left the class so much more knowledgeable about events of the past and an appreciation for history.
Very good professor, just make sure you do the readings and study for the midterm and final (the only two tests).
Amazing professor. Straight to the point about your grade. You get a quiz about the reading once a week! DO THE READING!! There are two tests and two really simple papers. PCS is great and really funny highly recommend!
Great professor with full of knowledge. He makes history class funnier than other professor and good understanding of the materials.
PCS is by far the best professor I've ever had. On the 2 papers he assigns (6 page minimum but it was very easy to get there) he'll write more in the margins than you typed on the page. Accepts rewrites. 10 reading quizzes. Everything's straight forward, and you get the grade you deserve. I wish I could take the class again. 10/10 would recommend.
Really great professor. Definitely take him if you have the chance. He's really clear with how you can pass the class. Before this class I genuinely HATED history but his lectures are easy and he's very passionate about the subject. Wish more professors were like him.
PCS is by far one of the best professors in QC. Hilarious lectures which will keep you awake since most history professors will put you to sleep. Weekly quizzes on the readings that are assigned but you won't know which day he will give the quiz. Exams are based off of what is said in lecture and specifically points out what is going to be tested.
Just do the readings and copy the notes he tells you are important for the test and you'll do fine. Most of your grade is based on the quizzes which are based on the readings. Class was not boring and you can tell he's passionate about what he's teaching.
A really nice guy. Knowledgeable and dedicated in his teaching. YOU WILL NOT FALL ASLEEP IN HIS CLASS BECAUSE HIS METHOD OF TEACHING IS NOT BORING. 14 quizzes, 2 MC exams and a Final paper (2 pgs long). Assigns a quiz once per week based on the readings for that day. Participation is not required. Easy A, all you have to do is put in the effort.
PCS is terrific in any course he teaches, and this Film Aesthetics is one of his favorite topics. Class is so much fun to attend. You get to see lots of movies. PCS explains the history of the times the films were made, which is why this qualifies as a history course, although it seems more like a film studies course. Very enjoyable..
PCS's class was interesting, engaging, and very organized. You must read the textbook to do well in his class! His tests come directly from the slides he puts up. Read, take notes, and you will do well!
This was one of the greatest classes I have taken in my lifetime. Im really sad it ended because I was so engaged and emotionally attached to each lecture. I throughly enjoyed this class and infact it wasnt even a class to me. He is one of the greatest teachers I have had, he explains things so interestingly and makes me want to major in history.
This was my favorite class this semester! Professor Conolly-Smith really knows how to teach! He makes his class worth sitting through! Its not a hard class and the way he presents the material is very entertaining!
Prof. Peter Conolly-Smith is one of Queens College's best, it's no wonder his classes are usually the first to close out each semester. Class discussions are exciting, the readings are fabulous. This is a course that should be taken and will be enjoyed (as are all of PCS's classes). You can see he put a lot of effort into designing this course..
I am a freshman at Queens College and took Professor Collony based on his reviews! He's a fantastic professor and is super funny. All you have to do is pass his quizzes that he gives once a week, and are based on the readings he assigned. Pretty self-explanatory professor and the final and midterm are based on notes you took from his class.
He is one of the best professors at Queens College! His lectures are so captivating and he clearly states in the beginning what he expects from you. In addition to such amazing lectures, he is a very funny man and begins each class with a song that ties into his lesson. I would definitely take him again!
Honestly, I understand why most of these rating are high because he's a very good professor and if you love history, you'll enjoy this class. But, if you're just taking this for credit and not a fan of history, do not take it. do not make my mistake. He's really strict on grading and if you miss a quiz, you have to have a Solid excuse.
Good professor, easy class, just read
This class made me hate history. Avoid if you can. Unnecessary quizzes given on things you dont need to know ever
This course was super easy, only problem was his pop quizzes on the textbook reading. Understanding the concept won't help in his class, he asks questions on the small information to make sure you read. Doing poorly on his quizzes will bring your grade down. Pick another professor
Honestly, the reason I gave him a bad rating is because of his quizzes. I hated them and they made my life hell. Choose another professor and save yourself. Only take this class if you want to tank your GPA
This is seriously the best class to take, if you want to drop your gpa
If you are not good at Chicago Style... STAY AWAY!!! I will never take his class again because of all the crap I had to deal with using Chicago Style. I worked so hard on papers just to get canned with not using Chicago Style correctly. Its a history course not a literacy course!!! Avoid if you care about your GPA
The class itself was good, PCS is a good lecturer. His quizzes straight up ruined the class for me ans is the reason he's at a 3 and not a 5 rating. The quiz tests you on things that are not important and things you'll never need to know. Avoid this class because it'll be a waste of your time
TAKE HIS CLASS! He is amazing and you would not regret taking his class. Just be prepared for weekly quizzes. And you will be okay.
For a beginner level history class, this course is tough. I got an A, but it was difficult to manage
PCS is extremely well-organized and the class is very straight forward. The quizzes ask detailed questions from the reading, but you need only get 4 right out of 10 to receive full credit. In addition to teaching you history, he teaches you how to read carefully, which in turn improves your comprehension and recall. I highly recommend PCS.
One of the best professors I've ever had. If you're not sure whether to take him, TAKE HIM. It's easy. He tells you how to get an A and the quizzes that people are complaining about aren't even hard. When you read just take notes on what you read. Amazing professor, if he taught more classes I'd definitely take them all. Very smart guy.
Get ready to read ALOT. Quizzes every week but as long as you do the readings, you'll be fine. Overall, interesting lectures, funny guy and engaging as well. Tells you exactly what will be on the exams, straightforward with his grading policies, two exams in the semester (midterm and final) with two essays (only one counts). Great professor overall
Overall good professor. Very reading/quiz heavy, not a lot of note taking, exams are super easy (as long as you study), and very knowledgeable in the course. However, can be super rude if he doesn't like you and he will call you out if he thinks you're not paying attention/doing well. Somewhat of an easy class if you try.
PCS is a great professor. The readings may be time consuming, but they weren't difficult and the quizzes were super simple. The lectures are easy to follow, and there aren't a lot of notes to take. The midterm and final are both multiple choice, and very easy. It would be very hard to fail his class.
This class is an easy A to whoever wants it. All you have to do is actually read the assigned readings. If you don't even bother to do that the chances of you getting a good grade is pretty low. Definitely would recommend as his lectures are never boring and makes it very clear as to what notes need to be taken down in order to pass the exams.
PCS is amazing! His lectures can be boring but he cracks some jokes in there to keep us going. Also, his dope British accent keeps me awake most of the time. He makes something so complex so easy by not including unnecessary details and says "this will be on the test". Just read because quizzes given once a week make up majority of ur grade.
I had PCS in 2002 and comments are still very accurate! He won some award years ago and asked me to write a recommendation and I doubt I was the sole person, but felt so much gratitude knowing he asked me. His style basically convinces you to be part of the class and take this from a person who has a life long stutter and wanted to participate.
He is the greatest professor Ive ever had. It was a pleasure to be his student.
His classes were the highlight of my week.
I personally always looked forward to this class. This professor gave amazing lectures and kept the class very entertained. Just two papers- one for a midterm and one for a final, clear grading criteria , papers not long at all. Also weekly quizzes, if you do the reading the quizzes are no problem. Very clear and understanding professor.
His teaching style is incredible with him being lively and interactive with students (allowing them to interject with comments/questions). He gave out weekly quizzes worth the bulk of the final grade (81pts) and handed out a "mock" midterm where it wouldn't be averaged in allowing him to give advice prior to the final. 100% recommend, take him!
He's one of the best profs I've ever taken at QC, if not the best. Reading assigned each week w/ a short quiz to make sure you read it. He gives TONS of feedback on the 3 papers, like he spends hours grading them so u improve. His lectures were more of a conversation with all the students n everyone learns from each other. I loved this class sm.
What can I say, PCS is one of the best! This course is a colloquium, so it is intensive writing heavy, but PCS makes sure you learn writing skills that will last a lifetime. Class sessions are more group discussions than lectures, and PCS wants students to express their opinions. He treats students with respect, and as adults. Take him! . .
I really loved this professor! His weekly assignments were straightforward and his midterm and final papers were short and simple primary source analyses. I really flunked on my final but because of the other work done I was able to pass. Just read and look at the syllabus often and you will be okay.
This professor is a tough grader. Has very strict participation criteria. Attendence matters. You lose points for being absent. Readings are heavy. This class seems like more reading intensive than writing intensive. Alot of reading done. And quizzes to make sure you do the reading.
Im NOT a fan of Professor Smith. He expects way too much from students. I get he has a PhD but that should not matter when teaching undergrads. I feel like he never has anything good to say about your work. He criticizes a lot & is a VERY TOUGH GRADER!!! Only reason I am giving three stars is because his work is manageable. Its weekly homework.
This class is boring as heck . I regret taking this class. I had no choice but to take this class, because it was the only writing intensive course available at the time. Not that much writing intensive courses to choose from. This professor is too strict with regarding attendance, participation, your writing. Oh my god. Not flexible at all. Unfair
PCS is fantastic, charismatic, and his classes are a joy to attend. Take any class he offers, if you can get in (his sections are usually the first to close out in the department). This class is about immigration, but really so much more. You just learn so much. A Writing Intensive course, you will learn skills that will be useful for life..
Prof. Conolly-Smith is phenomenal! He is charismatic and his classes are exciting and a joy to attend. You learn a lot, and have fun learning. Grab his class if you can get in (his sections are always the first to fill up). PCS provides all reading materials online, so you don't have to spend money on expensive texts. You will love his class..
Quizzes are unfair. It seems like a punishment to make sure you do the readings for each class. It seems to me he doesn't trust his students in doing the readings. That is a bad outlook. Readings are too much. He is very strict regarding attendance. You get a zero if you are absent for one class. Not fair. Seems like this professor needs to chill.
PCS is a "must take" prof in the History Dept. Exciting lectures and clear grading rules. Ten unannounced quizzes which are easy, as long as you did the reading. All reading material posted on-line, so no textbook costs, and readings are very interesting. A writing intensive course, but PCS will go over your work so you learn style. ..
Wonderful professor teaching an interesting class, which fulfills college distribution requirements. Perfect for History majors or non-majors. Ten pop-quizzes, which are easy to pass if you have done the readings, and the readings are interesting and exciting. Most students love this class and this instructor. Take any class he offers! . .
Informative class that is actually fun. You learn a lot and enjoy learning. PCS is dynamic and charismatic, and he is there for you. Most students who take one of his classes want to take more with him. Put in a little effort, and you will receive much in return. Very enjoyable experience. . .
Who knew American history could be so exciting? Although this is a "jumbo" section, you get the feeling that the professor is speaking directly to you. PCS gives enthusiastic exciting lectures and clearly cares about history. He makes it come alive, and even if you didn't before, you will care about history after just a few classes. Enjoy! ..
Easy class, he gives a quiz every week from the reading which is usually ver east and takes up most of your grade.
Oh My god. This professor is not chill. He criticizes your writing. This professor needs to go. He needs to be Fired. Come on CUNY. Take a better professor than this one right here. Avoid him. He seems like the deeming in evilness. Avoid Avoid Avoid. Too strict. I thought professors would be flexible. But not this one. My god. My god. Avoid
If you want to learn and have fun learning, this professor is for you. If you are lazy and don't want to make any effort, then avoid him. The more you put in, the more you get out. This is a 200-level writing intensive college class, so that is the way it should be. PCS is one of the most popular professors in the department for good reason. .
PCS has established his brand as an exciting charismatic professor, one of the best in the History Dept. You will enjoy learning in any of his classes. The more you put in, the more you get back. Tests and quizzes are easy, as long as you show up in class and do the reading. You can tell he cares about his students, he is there for them. ..
I really don't get why this professor has such good ratings. Something is off. He criticizes way too much. He's straight rude. You can just tell he thinks highly of himself the way he responds to your work. The smallest thing will set him off to where he's sending you practically an essay about what you did wrong and how it shows you suck at histor
Top notch professor makes class exciting. Show up, do the reading, you will enjoy the class and be rewarded. You can see he cares about the topic and cares about his students. Fun and exciting class. ..
One of the few classes in college for far that I actually enjoyed. If you do the weekly quizzes that's an automatic 81 for the class. And he doesn't even grade the midterm. Its like practice for the final. When he is teaching the political stuff he seems to have a heavy liberal bias but we do live in NY so expected nothing less.
Prof. Connoly-Smith is amazing! Imagine, American history taught by a non-American. He has an interesting perspective and makes the subject fascinating and enjoyable. Most students love his classes and want to take him again. If you are a serious student you will be rewarded. You can see he cares about American history and his students. .
Professor Conolly-Smith is great at what he does, he presents a clear lecture with a slideshow and knows what he is teaching about. There's weekly quizzes that aren't difficult if you pay attention. The midterm and final papers are also straightforward as long as you study for it.
He is definitely the toughest grader I have had for an intro course. If you take his feedback to heart very thoroughly you will do well. Gave a 3 for difficulty because of grading, work load is easy. Do the quizzes every week, they are easy and can't be made up, they are open book to. A safe bet.
Excellent professor! Great lectures & adds humor to them. Very responsive if you email him. Also gives great feedback. He will teach you the mechanics of writing, and if you follow his instruction you will be fine. I wish he taught more classes!
A course about immigration taught by an immigrant. How interesting! PCS knows his stuff and makes his classes interesting and enjoyable. You will love any class he teaches. If you do the reading (which is very interesting) you will do well on the quizzes. He will teach you writing skills (this is a 'W' class) which will be very useful. . .
Interesting course taught by an amazing instructor! PCS (as he likes to be called) makes American History (or anything else he teaches) come alive. One of the best QC has to offer, grab any class you can get with him. Do the readings and attend class sessions and you will be well rewarded. You will enjoy this class, and you will learn. ..
I'm not sure why PCS has amazing reviews. His class was terrible. His quizzes ask questions about very minor details of the readings that one would normally skip over. Would never take him again, learnt absolutely nothing in this class. It was a waste of time and money.
Who knew American History could be so interesting and so much fun? This prof is dynamic, exciting, and charismatic, he makes the class come alive! Take any course you can get with him, you will be glad you did! You will learn and enjoy learning! . .
Attend the lectures, do the readings, and you will do well. PCS is one of the most popular and sought-after instructors for good reason. 10 quizzes are simple if you have done the reading, difficult if you have not. This is a 'W' course, so you will learn to write, an important skill. Put in the effort and you will be rewarded. Learn & enjoy..
Amazing lectures make American History interesting. Was not particularly interested in the subject before taking this class, but I am now. Well worth taking and course this guy teaches. .
Great professor, interesting class. Well worth taking. You will be happy you did. .
One of the best professors I've ever had. PCS is funny, fair, engaging and ungodly fast when it comes to responding to e-mails. He genuinely cares about you improving your writing and is specific on what he thinks needs improving. Great guy, 100% recommend.
you will never have a professor as engaging as PCS, guy loves his history and always finds a way to make his lecture engaging wit the class
Really nice professor and knows a lot about what he's teaching. There are 2 papers (midterm and final) that are around 450 words each about the prompt he gives. The homework is just reading and answering weekly questions that he calls quizzes. If you stay after class or email him for help he will be very descriptive. Highly recommend.
The course itself was very good. Material was interesting, the lectures were great, and workload was definitely manageable. Grades papers harshly near nitpicking, which can be annoying but will make you a better writer. The real big negative is his attitude. If something sets him off he can be condescending. Rude grading comments and emails.
I don't write reviews for many professors, but this prof definitely deserves one. Amazing lectures! Not many people show after a while considering attendance isn't mandatory, but even then he still gives a great lecture for the few that do show. You will have a quiz every week but it's very simple and his questions guide you! Sweet class! Take him!
I hate this man so much that I had to submit a second rating in addition to the one I submitted to my school. He's amazing at lecturing, I'll give him that, but his personality and the way he carries himself is atrocious. He's so rude and condescending, I would dread every time I had to speak to him.
I've taken a lot of courses over the years and Peter is by far my favorite professor. Hes hilarious, engaging and extremely positive. There was a lot of reading in his course, but the quizzes were extremely straight forward and he is a lenient grader on quizzes and writing assignments. Would definitely take again.
for the last person who called him psychotic, I agree. He is very disrespectful, especially to those who might not understand something. He doesn't care about your grade nor bothers to help you the slightest bit. He gives out pop quizzes every week; doesn't say which day. Get ready to read... A LOT. And the ego thing is true, he has a HUGE ego.
Nice guy, good lecturer class is not an easy A. You have to do the readings every night before class which do take over an hour however if you them, you will get a 4/4 on the next days quiz which is 4% of your grade. He also grades papers harshly but overall a good guy and professor, would definitely take him again.
he is a very "interesting" professor for better or worse, but as long as you do the work like the weekly homework quizzes for the readings he assigns and pay attention to the lectures, you will be fine. his class is very old-fashioned (no electronics and no outside references) but overall he is my favorite professor, very funny, overall a cool dude
Professor Smith was very straightforward and overall an easy class. However, it requires a lot of reading and paying attention to small details. If you do the reading you will definitely be good and the midterm and finals are really easy as long as you take good notes and pay attention in class. He can also get angry over small situation.
Do not take his class, he's super rude, obnoxious, and cocky. Pop quizzes weekly, lots of readings. He calls you out in class, especially if you're doing poorly on his quizzes or in class overall. His class is super stressful and overwhelming and will boost your anxiety level. I strongly regret taking his class.
get ready to read, but other than his class is great. would definitely take again
I loved this class. We had one quiz a week, but approaching the end of the semester he gave us take home quizzes. He cares if we pass or not! Lots of reading but the material was interesting. A midterm exam and final exam plus 2 papers, but the first one is not graded, just for guidance for the next one. The exams are so easy if you go to class.
It's been so long since I took this class so I don't remember every detail but I know Professor Conolly-Smith is my favorite professor. Insightful, knowledgeable, and hilarious. There's a ton of reading but I did well and I don't particularly like reading. Some quizzes on the material we read. Fair grader and helps you become a better writer.
Rude but the assignments were easy
This professor's goal is for everyone to do well in the class. If you come to class and do the readings you will do well in the class. There are 2 tests; a midterm and final. There are quizzes once a week on either Monday or Wednesday on the reading from the previous night which are very easy if you complete the reading. Overall, I highly recommend
Rude and also pro colonization
Definitely worth taking. All the assignments were very easy, and highly recommend to freshmen.
PCS is such an amazing professor. As long as you come to class, read the textbook, and try to pay attention in class, it's an easy A. He's always available during office hours. One of the best history professors I've had. take him!!
PCS is the best history professor. All you have to do is complete his lengthy reading, which will help you pass the easy weekly quizzes. There is also a midterm and final 22-question test, each with a short essay. I advise jotting all of the relevant quotes and information from the reading in a notepad. The following day, review your notes.
Guaranteed to pass if you show up and do the readings. Weekly pop quizzes on the readings, super easy as long as you do the readings. PCS is knowledgeable on his subject and genuinely cares how students do in his class. He responds to emails pretty quickly and is accessible outside of class if you have questions.
Let me tell you PCS is a great professor. Even though theres a lot of weekly reading to do at home, it prepares you for the quizzes he gives when you come back to class (i advise to take down notes on the readings and review them before hand). 2 exams and 2 paper to write, but the first one doesnt count as its like a guide. Overall, I recommend.
This class was a little intimidating at first because of the workload but PCS is an amazing professor and just wants to see his students succeed. Weekly quizzes based on textbook readings, midterm, 2 papers (only one counts, other is a rough draft used for feedback) and a final. Take History 104 with PCS.
This is a very reading intensive course, but if you can get past that, PCS is a fantastic professor that lectures well and gives students an ample amount of resources and time to ace the class. If you are willing to put in the work, it's a fun class and a very easy A
PCS is a must-take professor for any serious history student. While he may be more demanding than others in the department, you will learn important life-skills in his course that will be important in your future career. He cares, and is willing to do extra work on his part to help you improve your writing. He is inspirational and charismatic. .
Easiest professor for seminar level courses, is extremely chill and wants you to succeed. He'll give an insane amount of feedback on his papers, but just be aware that a large chunk of your grade rides on participating in class discussions He doesn't care about right or wrong answers, and only four papers, but lots of reading and a weekly quiz.
Not a lot of material to read, and the quizzes on the material are VERY FORGIVING, easy to get used to. Truly cares for the students and wants them to pass the class. On top of that is enjoyable to listen to. Would take again.
PCS is a great professor who truly cares about student success. The readings are manageable, and the quizzes are very forgiving. With a bit of effort and using helpful resources like unstuckstudy ai, you can easily ace this class. I'd definitely take it again.
This class requires you to read a lot and prepare you for random quizzes based on the reading. PCS is one of the best professors ive taken, lectures are engaging and all he wants his is students to succeed. Two exams based on the notes he gives and two essays (one doesnt count its like a guide). A must take class, its worth it
He is cruel. He expressed my skills as a freshman were not to the caliber of the colloquium course required for all history majors. He did not recommend I pursue the course, and in essence the history major. A teacher should never demotivate and discourage their students. What is the purpose of higher education then? Worst A. Find other staff.
PCS know what he is talking about in history. 2 paper you will have to do but first paper will not be graded as it will help you in your second paper. However he is nit-picking on the paper and u will get the grade on what u deserve. There is quizzes as well which u will have to read text book. You will be able to tell on how he hates republicans.
I took him in my first ever semester and completely forgot to drop a review. Love this man, he's really funny and engaging, if you even kind of tolerate history this class will be a treat. Uh, his quizzes get a bit quirky at night (but studying just demands remembering certain details or people that stand out), not too hard. Highly recommend him.
Took him a few years ago and forgot to leave a review. PCS is an absolute GOAT! Very engaging and interesting class. Hes very nice, cracks funny jokes in class. Class is easy, as long as you study and actually read. The quizzes will be a breeze once you start to pick up what he questions from the readings. Exams are straightforward.
