very boring
This guy seems nice enough (so far, I've only been to 2 classes) but I swear he's like 95 years old hahaha
soo boring, very unclear on what he wants in papers, picks minute details out for tests, bad teacher
Very down to earth and kind. People who don't like him are just lazy and unwilling to work hard for their grades. He is extremely fair and more than happy to help. His bright attitude adds sunshine to my day.
Extremely intelligent and knowledgeable of literature. He always has an interesting story behind everything you read. Also, he has an underlying humor that many students don't pick up on. All around wonderful man.
a little crazy, sort of that space cadet vibe. Loves to give 5 question quizzes, does not involve the class much with his lectures and is not very interesting. Very hard grader, most redeemable quality is his semester grades are much higher than his tests
He is an ecentric kind of a guy, but his class is easy compared to other English classes If you want to socre an easy A next semester, definently take him
He is very knowledgeable about the history and background of the authors. Don't expect class discussions. Gives pop quizzes on details from the reading, and the tests are hard. He gives 2 papers, and your grade is based more on those than on the quiz/midterm grade.
sneaky pete... I think if someone needs a 100-200 level english course, just take this guy once, if you must.. he's not the worst.. he's just a little dry/boring.. doesn't really pay attention to the class, but knows alot of history and innuendos behind t

Very unclear on assignments. Tests are hard
basically learned nothing helpful from him
Sooooo boring, very unclear, not helpful at all, and he's very inconsistent in grading. DO NOT TAKE! Save yourself the trouble and aggravation.
ver boring, and RUDE teacher.....pretty much expects students to read his mind, and is very opinionated. His quizzes are easy, but only bc he wings the questions a min before the quiz. Makes rude comments towards students, and makes the class very un-enjoyable....Not recommended
This guy is very boring and makes the students feel like they are in pre-school, because he always says a sentence and waits for the students to finish it with the answer, which is so obvious no one wants to say it. he is the easiest grader you will probably ever encounter and there is VERY little work. i recommend this class
He basically acts as if this is the only way to make money and doesnt ahve much passion for the topic. All he does is talk but he's a nice guy but will totally out you in front on the class. He does expect you to read his mind so be careful and make sure your attendance is good otherwise he will withdraw or fail you without tell you! ..i got a B
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I have never had a class more boring or tedious than this one. He takes out random lines in the stories and acts as if theyre important because he has never read the stories so he has no idea what he is talking about or whats relevant! he's also very rude and makes sexual innuendos about EVERYTHING. not even an easy grader.
easiest class I've ever taken.. I lost the book we read every class half way through the semester and I still have a good grade.. doesn't care if you show up or not.. def take
Interesting Person. His class is easy to sit through. He grades his papers hard at first, but he grades higher by the end of the course. He tells his students in the beginning that a C would be hard to get; Well i got a B without trying, so there ya go!
Literally the worst teacher I ever had... the guy is 70 years old he doesnt know if you go to class or now but he grades his papers soo hard its impossible to get an A with him. The class is easy in the beginning of the year but TRUST ME it gets 100x harder and you will regret taking him.
there is nothing good to say about him. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! i had bad experiences with him, but the guidelines for this site say "Claims that the professor shows bias for or against a student or specific groups of students" will be deleted, despite their truthfulness. So, this is the best i can do....
WORST TEACHER EVER. DO NOT TAKE. He grades reallly hard and if you ask him a question about your paper he won't answer it.
Dr. Cortland is a great man. He doesn't care if you attend class. He is very intelligent with a sense of humor as well. He gives easy quizzes on the short stories we read, but other than that no tests. A few quick 2 page papers, but they're easy. Not so easy to get As. He's not interested in you writing much detail, but rather proving your point.
Quizzes every other class but they aren't too hard, even if you just read sparknotes you can get by with a decent grade. 2-3 papers only 3 pages long and a final on the books you have read. For an English class I'd say it isn't so bad.
Don't have to go to class. Small papers. Overall an easy grade.
he gives 5 question pop quizzes almost every other class so do the readings and does 2 page essays every week. hes kind of creepy towards the female students but he gives good grades if you do the work.
Avoid this professor!!! Gives random quizes off the readings often. Questions are absolutely absurd. He expects all his students are scholars in English and is the most difficult grader I've ever seen. You will read the most BORING books and stories ever printed. Expects you to read hundreds of pages in short periods of time and then write. AVOID
I really have to disagree with all the bad comments about him. He's a really funny teacher, makes frequent jokes. He is up front about what he expects from you and gives you a lot of time on essays. There's no multiple drafts so they are easy 2 page papers. Easy reading quizzes to boost up grade are sometimes given. Overall great teacher!
You can skip class as much as you want- he doesn't even know your name, let alone take attendance. However, you don't learn a single thing all semester, he picks texts we shouldn't be reading until out grad year, and he gives random quizes that he makes up on the spot. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Cortland is actually a really nice man. Tries very hard to tell jokes, but usually fails to get laughs. He lets you redo essays to get a better grade and can be a tough essay grader at times if you're not that great at english. Nice man, but extremely boring class. Wouldn't take him again, but I wouldn't tell someone he's awful.
This man is horrible. There was an essay every week which I got an A on every single time. I asked why I got an A- as my final grade and he said that there I only got 1 A and 1 C+ on an essay. He didn't actually write down what I got on most of my papers...probably doesn't even know my name and I sat in front. Just awful. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Took him both semesters of freshman year to get an easy A. 2 page paper every 2 weeks (which is not bad at all considering some of the other English professors .) Little 5 question quizzes once every week or two which barely affect final grade. Doesn't take attendance and the final is easy and doesn't have to do with the material in the semester
Easy grade, took him both semesters, class drags on a bit but funny guy. Take for easy English grade if you are a freshman because other teachers will consume you're life with work
This goofball of a teacher is hilarious and super cute; however, he does not know how to post to blackboard grade his students. With 14 kids in the class, he still manages to have to read off of the name list. 2 page essays every week and random pop quizzes on readings. Easy A if you can write.
As if this class wasn't bad enough (I'm a transfer and was exempt from this course at my old school), this professor makes it 10x worse. He's a decent teacher, but he's way too traditional. He doesn't believe in computers, and won't write on a white board. He doesn't bother to learn names, but the class is an easy A if you know when papers are due.
Professor Cortland is a great guy. He is always there for you and is probably one of the easiest english Professor. He even admits it. However, he is a tough grader but the papers he assigns are short and from the readings he goes over in class. If you follow directions you will do well.
Weird grader on papers, pop quizzes every week on minor details of super long and boring books. Not a terribly hard class, but I wouldn't ever take him again.
He is smart, but he is not a very good teacher. He is funny, but his class is just unbelievably boring. There are pop quizzes once a week that will definitely get you upset. Just do well on the papers. I definitely would not take him ever again.
He's kinda useless and you will have no idea what your grade is.
Don't take him trust me you will regret it!!!!! There is a pop quiz every Monday and the final exam is impossible!!!
Easy grade, class can be slow but he is pretty funny. Easy english class if you don't want english to be your life then definitely take him. Popquizzes every week but if you listen to him he gives you the answers right before quiz time.
Never take this professor. He is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He is unreasonable, does not give clear instructions, and you will not know your grade. There is a quiz every week and he expects you to read an absurd amount. Do not take him! Also, a very boring class.
Easily the most boring class I've had to sit through. Papers assigned randomly throughout the semester, and very specific quizzes once a week based on the readings
Being a student thats on top of my work and grades, this professor is one of the worst professors I've had. His grading on essay's is not clear at all, won't give you a specific grade on your essay's. There is pop quizzes on specific details on what you read. I've never been so close to having to repeat a class.
This teacher gives random pop quizzes over details you will never remember. I thought I was gonna get a C+, but he seemed to bump up my grade at the end. Final Exam is as bad as the pop quizzes with 3 3-page essays.
He is a nice man and will receive late papers from you. He does not take attendance but you will be lost the nest class on the reading because we read every class. He's joke are actually funny and he means well. I disagree with all the hate towards him.
Professor Cortland is simply not a good at what he does. Sitting in his class is the most boring thing you can do.
Never explains essay prompts and expects you to read 300+ pages by the next class. His essays give no feedback and also grades them super hard. Huge stickler on grammar. He spends class summarizing what you were supposed to have read for homework and gives pop quizzes that probably count for nothing. Only english prof that gives a final (3 essays)
He's a very sweet man. He gives a lot of good feedback but does give a lot of homework. He's also very strict about grammar but deducts points when necessary. Lectures were heavy and can get boring. It was difficult to reach him through email. I suggest getting in contact with the people in your class for missed material. Easy to talk to.
I was very happy when this class ended.
I remember receiving an email shortly before the semester started, stating that this professor would be teaching our class instead of the original professor that everyone had registered for. I NEVER would have taken him if that did not happen. Incredibly boring, extraordinarily bad professor.
If you go on your laptop and not pay attention then you won't do good. All you need to do is read SparkNotes for the class before, listen to what he says, then you'll be fine on the final. Very unspecific on requirements for papers. A couple of 1-page papers that discussed what we read for homework. Go to class, read SparkNotes, you'll get an A.
Professor Cortland is very sweet old man, but his class is awful. The course has no structure and every class is just him analyzing the book line by line. Grades come from pop quizzes and essays. Not a hard class at all, just very boring.
This was a very boring and awful class. People like him for his sweet personality. His structure of class comprises of quizzes based on reading and essays due every couple weeks. It's not a difficult class if you read and pay attention, however, I would recommend taking a different teacher!
He will not understand your questions and will give back unrelated answers. Be ready to ready unrelated and very long readings for every class and have pop quizzes on most readings. Expect a short essay 2-3 times a month. He never puts grades on blackboard and only gives you letter grades on essays. Read before class and do the essays, easy A.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. I usually like English classes and I took this class as an elective. This class has zero structure, follows no syllabus, you have no idea what your grade is, and you have to write at least 10 papers all assigned and then due in two days. He lectures the entire time, but you have no idea what you need to know.
No structure. Does not follow syllabus, and it is confusing anyways. Does not know how to use blackboard. Easy A, but be prepared to receive grades like A-/B+ with chicken scratch notes that are impossible to decipher. Lectures the entire class. Says attendance is mandatory but never takes attendance and does not deduct points for absences.
Cortland seems like a sweet old man at first, but then you realize how unrealistic his expectations of you are, and how much reading you're expected to do. Sometimes he'll tell the class to read 150 pages of a book within 2 nights. Had him online for half a semester and he took advantage of this to assign more work. Avoid if you can.
I absolutely can not stand this man. I took him for EN 101 AND 102. Not clear with expectations of the class and for you. Tough and specific essay grader. NEED TO READ. Sparknotes summary won't cut it. Random pop quizzes. does not follow the syllabus. Hard to get in contact with. I had him for the end of the semester online for EN 102 too.
Not the worst but def not good. He makes u read a new book/play/story every week or two i took him for EN102 and everyone i knew was doing a research paper the whole semester except for him. He gives pop quizzes once or twice a week with the most specific questions so make sure u read or at least spark notes good. papers were short 3 page max
professor Cortland is very sweet and as long as you participate and show you care you'll get a good grade. he'll give you four books to read, 4-5 papers to write, and pop quizzes every other week. The quizzes are very easy as long as you read the books.
Professor Cortland is a very sweet old man. He is very reasonable. gives some pop quizzes, so u need to so some reading but essays have no specific due dates. If you can take his class online it will be very easy but in person may be a little harder. Easy grader for essays. pay attention and take notes and the essays will be very easy to write.
Professor Cortland was an okay professor. There are papers on the readings every other week, and he's not a super tough grader. He does give pop quizzes on the readings sometimes, so you do have to read what he assigns (or at least look up a summary).
He goes through each of the readings and tells you exactly what it means. All the papers have really easy topics and he grades them based on grammar and structure rather than content so its a very easy A as long as you write the papers.
He seems like a nice person and he is also hilarious, now with that being said this class was horrible. He loves to hear himself talk should have remained a philosopher. Doesnt email or use blackboard and doesnt even update grades properly. It is impossible to know what he is looking for in papers, gives mediocre feedback.
While this class was a bit of a drag, it was undoubtedly an easy A. You will read plenty of maybe not the most exciting stories, but for the most part, they are short. Make sure that you actually read, as he doesn't always give you a heads up on the reading quizzes. You will be writing many short papers that aren't complicated, just tedious.
Professor cortland does not care for his students, very unclear with assignments and difficult to understand the concept of how he wants his essays written. If you dont write them the exact way he wants them you will fail on every one. Doesnt post anything in blackboard, unorganized and cannot write clearly on whiteboard. Do not take this class
grades whatever he wants. assigns random stuff. doesnt follow syllabus
No idea what my grade is, assigns quizzes on the spot, grades randomly (you could write down the same quiz answer as somebody else and get a 0 while they get a 100), doesn't leave feedback on papers besides "good/okay/etc." All you do is read and take impossible quizzes with specific questions (for ex he will ask what the first word of a book is)
This professor is quite literally incompetent. Old dude who doesn't respond to emails and doesn't understand blackboard. He didn't even teach the class correctly and gave a pop midterm for no reason. His old essays are literally sexist, I do not understand how he is living or is still employed. L + ratio + find another English professor.
worst professor. he makes no sense at all and just talks and talks and talks. when he writes on the board don't strain yourself trying to understand what he wrote, you never will. it's actually funny how bad of a teacher he is, he really shouldn't be teaching at all.
Professor Cortland starts off as just an old guy who seems sweet but that is such a lie. He is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. He lectures at you and wont listen to anything but the sound of his own voice. He expects you to read way too much for every class period and will quiz you on it. He is late to every class and will go over time.
Please never take him. He said the word cuck at least once a lecture. Was openly racist, homophobic, and sexist. He said that mental health meditation will turn us into robots very early into the semester. Doesn't set the schedule he sets, is terrible at using technology, is allergic to rubrics, is so inconsistent with grading. Just don't do it.
easy class. barely uses blackboard, attendance does not matter. as long as your essays have good grammar (just use grammarly) you will get an a or b in the class.
these reviews are way harsher than they should be.. the class is insanely easy if you do what is asked of you. Most of the time you are just sitting in class listening to him talk (which you can easily get away with doing your own work), or working on the assignment that is due next class. He gives you ample time to finish assignments.
He's a fairly tough grader and assigns a lot of papers, but he goes through each of the readings (there are a lot) so you understand what you're working with. You may think you'll get away with not reading because he goes over it, but he assigns a lot of pop quizzes and you'll wish you'd read. He's sweet and has your best interest in mind.
The other ratings are extremely harsh and I was nervous to take Cortland. However, he is NOT AS BAD as these reviews are saying. If you put in the work in the short essays he gives and read the reading, which is any college English class, you will pass and get an A. He does give quizzes often, but the overall grade is the final paper. Easy A.
I do not know why everyone said pop quiz, he warned us about quizzes before they happened and gave us ample time to study for them. The grades were based off of the midterm and final paper, so the term was pretty easy and he was a very sweet, old guy. You can easily get away with doing other work during his class and it was an easy A. Recommend.
The papers assigned were relatively easy topics and as long as you pay attention in class, you will do fine on the quizzes (which he announces prior). As long as you are clear and concise, you will get an A and the questions he asks are not difficult. These other reviews are very harsh and he only wants the best for you and your grade.
Very sweet man
These other ratings are crazy. Cortlandt is so nice and offers ins
Really sweet man. He reads and explains the stories with us in class which is really helpful when it comes to writing essays. A lot of short essays, but they're pretty easy. Overall good class just tedious.
He assigns many papers with very very little notice, like 2-3 days' notice. He is a very tough grader, but not on grammar or objective things. I would get points off for not ordering my paragraphs the way he would have. He also does not respect students' time by always being late and/or not even showing up to class with no notice.
Sometimes comes late to class. He gives reading assignments of “just read ahead” and goes over anywhere from 30 to 200 pages after. Drones on about the book with no participation from the class. Readings are often challenging but not bad. Gives papers with no notice, expect to write random 3 page papers between classes. Doesn't follow syllabus
Though Professor Cortland is a very sweet man, he wasn't the best with timing. He came late to class almost everyday and had some days where he didn't show up until thirty to forty minutes into the class, wasting a lot of time for us. His handwriting is also very difficult to read. But his essay topics are rarely essay.
Professor Cortland is a very sweet old man. However, there are way too many papers. He's a tough grader, so you have to get used to how he grades. He also shows up to class at least five minutes late. There is little to no group discussion, and he talks the whole class. Be prepared to write the most boring papers.
Mr. Cortland is a very sweet man, but I didn't enjoy his class. His grading criteria was odd and feedback was hard to decipher. He is far from mean however, and does love his students despite his class being boring.
I would not take this professor again. He was a nice man but the class was not good. He never used blackboard and would just talk to the class about the book every class. He wouldn't assign page numbers so you never knew how much to read. He was always very unclear. Tests were included about the text but he would just verbally ask questions.
He grades heavy, you can't understand his handwriting. He is condescending and passive aggressive all the time. He doesn't know names, he doesn't seem to care. His syllabus is wrong all the time and doesn't seem to understand that's his fault. He can't use Canvas so good luck trying to find your grade. He is hard of hearing so repeat yourself.
