hard class. tests are way different from notes and problem sets. horrible class, avoid at all costs
lectures are very fast, no time to answer questions. homework very difficult and exams doesn't coincide with homework or lecture. failed 27 percent of class. you do the math
do your self a favor and take any other chem prof. this guy is out to ruin people
One of the best teachers I've had. He actullly seemed liked he cared about his students. He gave us review sessions even though he didn't have to.
you can get by without a textbook because his lecture notes online and the notes you take during class are all you need. o-chem itself is not easy so his helpfulness is only as good as you taking your time to ask. take advantage of his office hours.
if you want to learn ochem take another professor
problem is he thinks believes that he is a great instructor. fact is he shouldn't teach at all
Make learning ochem way to difficult. He may be good at research but can't teach.

The class itself is hard, but his notes are very clear and easy to understand. The class is not too bad as long as you stay on top of your stuff and do ALL the homework. He's very helpful and fair about the grades.
Dr. de Lijser is one of the kindest and most helpful professors I've had at CSUF. To be honest, OChem is not my thing, but he made it super interesting and challenging. He expects a lot from his students, but only because he knows that we can do it. He expects the best from us (as he should).
Makes the class way too difficult for students. Does not provide a clear method of attack. He may be nice, but his teaching strategy is way too hard. Hardly learn anything in the class, too busy trying to do problem sets.
He was extremely helpful during office hours. Too much info during lectures, but he breaks it up for you if you visit him during office hrs. Knows his stuff. Exams are hard.
He is a great teacher, but only if you are willing to go to office hrs every week, if you dont have time you're screwed. The homework is difficult, but still do-able, exams are unreasonably difficult. He introduces concepts, expect you to apply them. Suggests 2+hrs of study daily, and means it.
the course is hard. but his problem sets and exams are pretty difficult, especially during the second half of the semester. but he is a good guy. he will help you in his office hours and does expect alot. his grading method is pretty good with how difficult the course is. take him to learn alot.
he is the best but u have to study all u guys out there study and u will get an A in his class if u get lazy forget it dont blame it on him he is the best
Awesome teacher. I liked his teaching style, got to the point. Homework is hard but if u study it would definately help for the exam. Class is hard if not paid close attention too.
Not a good instructor at all. Fails 23% of class. Best to take another professor.
very clever & cruel also..too much wise % wicked...
As an Organic Chem teacher,he's the best, but his tests r tooo hard to pass sometimes, so is homework. If u want 2 learn, but get a C in the class, you should take him. But if you want to get a B or an A, look for other teacher, he's not for you. He'll help u anytime, he also picks on some students.
He is probably the smartest person in the chemistry department, but he expects alot out of his students. Tests are almost painful to take, homework is the same. If you put in effort but still dont get it he's good at explaining but only after he knows you tried. if you want an A, go somewhere else.

teaching skill are lacking. make class much to difficult.
I liked his class a lot. I thought it was tough, but I was really impressed by his skills. I liked how helpful he was during office hours. He likes you to tough-it-out, then come crawling to him for mercy.
Pretty easy class, each session is 5 weeks. Have to do 4 reading questionnaires, 1 proposal for essay, 4-5 pg essay, & a final (per session) Questionaires pretty easy, research essay takes a few hours. If u go 2 class & pay attention should do fine. Nice teacher & helpful, you will learn alot about the environment you didn't know!
Nice guy and a total environmentalist! You don't want to be caught dead throwing trash on the ground in front of this guy! He even admitted that he is not having kids because our planet is overpopulated. Neat, fun and very intelligent-give him the respect he deserves!
very bad teacher and arrogant...i dont understand how he even gets good rating with these other comments listed in here.this guy is a joke,he doesnt even help you at all...he cares more about his dumb research rather than the students.those in here giving him high ratings must had bribed him somehow;cuz i taught myself to pass with an A..serious!
Absolute arrogance and very disrespectful to his students.I came to his office hours for help and it was a total waste of time,if i can't figure out the answers 2 times.Hmmm what's the point even having office hours.Shouldn't you help your students out when they come to you???duh. All good comments on here are pure bs! they don't knw the truth.
i couldn't agree better with other's previous comments. I wonder how the heck this chump even got a job working with the CSUF chem dept. 71% of his students fail his class because his test questions are not related to the homework.lol. I passed the class with a B and learned mostly from Dr.Rogers.He didn't even help me so I went to Rogers for help!
His class is extremely difficult and his tests contain questions completely different from his lectures, homework and practice exams. His lectures make a subject look simple and then his tests show you how complex it really is. He does a horrible job at preparing you for his tests.
ok he is the best in teaching and if u people study and read the bok u do well dont blame it on him he is hard but ver very fair when it comes to grading i personalyy got an A in both of his 301 A&B so it is possible. go to his office hours. dont listeb to these lazy people that dont study and expect an A. no that does not happen here.....
Avoid this professor. Last class only one person recieved an A. Better off taking another teacher
this professor is very rude and disrespectful! His lectures do not have anything to do with the exams that he gives out.I had to learn everything on my own and earn my B. His problem sets are pathetic and useless!!! boy!!! this professor bugs!!!!!
worse teacher ever.makes u do dumb problem sets that dont even relate to the lecture exams! please for the sake of your self-esteem and soul avoid this horrendous professor.
i took this course summer 2005;i barely passed with C and my percentile is 50%.How the heck do you get a C with 50%.In real terms it should be an F.lol I did'nt even learn anything from this professor at all.I read straight from the book and did problems from it.His tests were 100% completely different. The syllabus states to study from text.lol

This is probably one of the most difficult undergrad courses you will ever take, but Dr. De Lisjer is also a great teacher who can help you to appreciate organic chemistry and learn a lot. As far as aid, he has a great website with lots of examples of prac
I agree with the others who say that although he is tough, he is in fact fair and helpful.Ochem is hard and lazy people will NEVER succeed. Also teaching is not easy....takes some time before finding teaching strategies that are effective. Give him a break already!!
I took this class during Summer 2005. I thought he was a very good teacher. His lectures were clear and he was very helpful during office hours. I went to every class, paid attention in lecture, and did all the practice problems he suggested. O. Chem is a tough subject, so I put alot of effort into it and it paid off. I got an A in the class.
if he is a good professor we shouldn't have to go to his office (twice a day ). Take o chem with Dr Rogers and you will know the difference. De Lijser shouldn't be teaching O Chem. I know he visited this website and put some good comments to justify his rudeness, saying we are lazy that's why we fail. Hello Dr De Lijser, I know it was you !
Any person who thinks a professor would waste his/her time to check his/her status in teaching on a website is out of their minds. de Lijser was hard, but it is not impossible to do well in his class; you just have to work hard. HELLO! THIS IS COLLEGE!!! WAKE UP!
I thought he was a good professor and very helpful. HOWEVER, his tests are VERY difficult. Our averages this semester for two of the tests were 40%. Just be prepared to study for HOURS a day and to earn your grade, because he won't just give it to you. Good luck, lol!
I enjoyed having de Lijser for Chem301A, and I am certainly taking Chem301B with him next semester. He's difficult alrite, but you'll learn soooo much from him. Attend his office hours, read the notes over after lectures, and practice the exercises within the reading and handouts given out. DO NOT GIVE UP! I surely didn't.
yes the class is hard but he does a good job in lectures. You have to take his advice though and PRACTICE!! Go to office hours and ask questions!!!
Regardless of his totally whack grading system he's an excellent Lecturer. He's awfully friendly and helpful if you see him during office hours. Never had I ever had to study so much in my life, the ochem material is just disgustingly difficult period, so students cant' blame him if they did poorly due to lack of study and practice.
Do not take this class, unless you are a chem. major. His tests are extremely hard and there is just way too much material for the semester. Go to his office hours, if you want to pass the class. In my opinion he needs to get out more.
Very easy/fair. Don't be afraid to take him. You learn a lot in his class.
Do not take him. He is not easy, and I got an A, but trust me do not take him. Worst teacher ever. His tests are rediculous, and when the whole class failed each tests, he made us take them again, and we all still failed. I did get an A, but trust me do not take this teacher. He is the worst one, even though the alternatives are not easy eithe
Time Out folks! How many times do people have to take Delijser in order to past?????????????? I think he should be removed from the Chem Department serious! For the 1000th time take Rogers or Belloli only for O-chem.Take DeLijser if you want to absorb the meaning of stress or have a miserable time. Good Luck! Listen to peers not teacher's pets!
I don't think it was necessarily the professor's fault but I didn't do very well in this class. Chemistry is a really tough subject.
Dr. De Lijser's lesson plan is consistently thoughtful, well planned, well elaborated, and concise. He is without a doubt one of the best instructors at CSUF despite his notorious reputation for extremely difficult exams. You will learn allot in this class if you keep an open mind throughout the course.
Ochem is a hard subject to learn.Dr. Delijser is an excellent lecturer, very clear and easy to understand. If you attended lecture, read the book, and put in the work like you're expected to when enrolling in any class then you'll be fine.Do all your homework, attend his office hour and you'll get 100/600 in the class, he'll drop your lowest test.
He is a total womanizer(sp?). If you are a girl, wear a skirt to his office hours and you will get an A. I have hairy legs and am a guy and thats why I didnt get an A
I've feared--Ochem! Not until I had DL did I overcame my fear and learn how to learn Ochem. How did DL helped me? He GRADED hws & weekly summaries & gave so many HWs probs w/ answers IN the soln guide (copy the solns if u need 2) that I got the stuffs after about 10+hrs of HWs and reading. Repetition is the mother of all skills, ESP. for ochem.

One of the best professors I've EVER had...made this subject fun and entertaining, and checks his email for student's questions almost every hour. To everyone who doesn't like this guy haha, you're just not trying hard enough in this class so suck it up and tooo bad.
The cutest and smartest chem prof. PDL is soooo considerate and respectful. Quick to respond to emails. And did I mention charming?
The lectures are relatively clear, the homework is beyond time consuming.the problem is that come test time neither the lecture or the 10 hour homework assignments can be of any use.the tests are not even relevant to the general topics of the chapters that are being covered.not a single problem is familiar. nice guy, okay teacher, horrible tester.
Exams are based on the textbook. Study all the problems and you'll do great. Plan on spending at least 10 hours/week outside of class as there is a ton of homework.
best words of advice "dont believe everything you hear"-Dr. De Lijser. And trust me guys, its TRUE..do yourself a favor and stay caught up, do the homework, and GO TO OFFICE HOURS..he is very helpful and does not mind even the stupidest questions... tests are straight forward, mostly from examples... bottom line, he is a great teacher!
this teacher is really tough. but he genuinely wants his students to do well. go to lectures, keep up with the homework and class summaries because those will help you out. and major bonus points for those who go to his office hours. he totally loves you more for it. i didn't do well because i started off behind and stayed that way. keep up.
I took him for A, B, & advanced O-Chem, and he is the most influential professors at CSUF. I learned a great deal from him, but he is difficult. The subject is difficult. Don't learn to the other negative comments because he can teach you a lot if you're receptive.
He actually is an awesome teacher...He is hard only if you slack off. If you don't understand anything, just ask because in order to do well you need to put in an effort!
Oh hell yessss! If you want to know Ochem Dr. D is the man!!!
Dr. De Lijser is an awesome instructor. The class is difficult but is par for course. Work hard and study or else.
Expect o.chem to be a hard class to begin with... but Dr. de Lijser is very helpful and clear. Go to office hours.. it will help a lot. Take good notes during lectures and keep up with mechanisms. You will learn a bunch and if you fall behind, it will be hard to memorize them all at once.
read.re-read. re-re read. i studied my ass off for his tests and still failed. its a hard subject. you may spend your time thinking you know pretty much everything.. but when it comes to the test... 1/3 of what you studied is actually on the exam. class averages were usually around 50/100. i suggest this to be your only class if you decide 2 enroll
This class is VERY hard and don't wait on the last minute to study for this class! If you do just fine in organic chem and blew biochem, then you should pass the class as long as you u did ur hw, labs, and paper! He does grade fair and he wants you to earn your grade! He is approchable during his office hours too. Be very proud of urself if u pass!

This class is super hard! the ave. in the 1st 2 tests r 52%, 3rd one was 42, 4th one was 34! Hw was not helpful for biochem. U will need a lot of time to study for the class! use the paper and hw to bring ur grade up. Work with a partner in the lab. You need to study for everything! I studied but i still didn't know half of the exam! Good luck!
He is a great teacher. He knows what he is talking about. The class is straight up HARD. This class is beyond just reading and doing homework, but being able to understand and connect concepts together. People say its hard, but if ur not a science person, then change ur major. I got an A, just work hard, and unless ur smart dont double up on scienc
This class is by far the hardest I've ever taken. He's a great teacher, it's just the material thats challenging...not challenging- nearly impossible. I had to repeat the class but de Lijser was a much better teacher than the one that taught it before and he is very approachable. If you have to take the class, he's the professor you want!
good luck! this class is no joke, the material is extremely hard and the amount needed to be studied and FULLY understood is quite the challenge. He's a good teacher in that he knows what he's talking about and is willing to help but its really up to the individual student to pass because nothing is going to be handed to you.
Dr. de Lisjer is awesome. Hard class no matter who you take it with but he will help and help until you get it. Take the class if you want to learn Ochem. Don't take it if you don't plan to work hard. It's gonna bit you in the butt.
He basically called our entire class retarded because he had to curve every single test. I'm pretty sure most people in a class full of chem/biochem majors are not stupid. Homework is easy, tests are ridiculous... class avg was usually in the 40's and lower. Yet it's not his teaching method, hmmm /facepalm
This class is NOT easy no matter who you take it with but you'll do yourself a favor by taking Dr. de Lijser because he's an awesome professor. He'll help you really learn and understand the material. Work hard and you'll at least get a B. Easy to talk to during office hours and he'll spend as much as it takes to help you out.
DeLijser is a good teacher! Its extremly important that you read the material before class! He is good at explaining things. He is very nice and useful if u go to his office. My best advice is to ask all the Q's you have!Dont be afraid! He WILL work with you and dumb it down if he needs to.tests are hard.He talks kinds quiet, sit in front.HW is okay
This class was INTENSE!Dr.D was very helpful and was easy to understand during lectures BUT the exams were a bit challenging.however the majority of the class didnt seem to recall much of 301A and thats what he had a problem with.Overall he is a great professor.be prepared to work your A** off if you want a good grade.afterall it is college people!
He is a little sarcastic, but very nice. He is EXTREMELY helpful,I usually email him a lot. You have to study REALLY hard for his tests, a lot of the questions you were never taught how to do. You read up to two chapters a week, and you HAVE to read or you'll fail hw/lecture. He has tough standards, but class is interesting and do-able overall.
Extremely difficult class. You need to read on a weekly basis or you will most likely fail. You have homework a few times a week-- and you need to have read the book in order to get the answers right. lab and activity are easy if you try. I'm pretty good at chemistry and I recieved a B by working my ass off. my class average was 64%
He is the best ochem professor for those who want to learn. Believe me , his teaching will benifit you
Great professor who really knows how to teach the material, but his exams are extremely difficult. Avg scores ranged between 40s and 50s. He offers extra credit as a form of curving but they usually come with conditions. You're getting your money's worth with De Lijser but earning that A (or even just passing the class) is that much more difficult.
Very helpful, especially during office hours
Very, very, very hard class but doable. Study your butt off and don't slack off with practice problems! He ends up curving grades at the end of the semester but still try to do well!
I'll admit due to the comprehensive materials it was difficult to ask him questions. But just do the homework and practice problems I guarentee A's for the test. They HELP .
He is a hard professor. I have seen better chem teacher than him. His exam is really hard and some time too long. Reallly hard to get A. I know it not easy but i work really hard but i got B. Don't take him
take De Lijser and get ready to put in a lot of studying time, all of the exams are cumulative so by the final exam you're really prepared, this class is not easy not matter who you take it with, make flashcards and good luck
He always seems like he knows what he's talking about during lectures but as soon as you ask him questions about hw or worksheet questions, he's completely lost. I would definately reccomend taking someone else if possible. He's one of those profs that knows their stuff but doesn't know how to teach it
I took this class with Salzameda the first time and he was awful. De Lijser had much better notes and even had them online along with other online tools to help you understand the material. This class isn't easy but if you study hard enough you should pass especially with De Lijser. PS: You can choose a written or multiple choice final
Ochem is a really tough class but he makes it interesting and makes you want to learn the material. He truly cares about his students and how they perform. He gives a ton of homework but only to benefit you later on. He has clear notes and tests are just like the notes and homework he assigns. Would def. recommend him and would take him again.
Great professor. Prepare super hard for this course. This is nothing like gen. chem. Be prepared to study your ass off if you wanna pass. Do problem sets, homework (does not represent the exam AT ALL). You are better off doing problem sets and homework prob. Please use the second language book-it will save your life. Study since day one that book!
