I had a hard time, but that was the class, not him. Seems nice enough.
The lectures and tests were okay, but the paper we had to write was totally irrelevant and boring.
I enjoyed Professor Diehl's lectures and information about life and times during Europe's middle ages. While the writing assignments were a bit tough to squeeze in each week, they were relevant to the era and actually enjoyable. Excellent professor.
Very interesting lectures, sticks to an outline, so notetaking is easy. Essay exams were hard but short answer quizzes were easy. Very smart professor, knows what he is talking about.
unrealistic expectations for a 100 level class. lectures were very dry and boring.
Brilliant, tends to ramble.
if you cant concentrate when a teacher studders or says uh, um, ahh, than DONT take him. His style of talking and explaining was distracting
very nice person. extremely smart, knows a lot. Huge study guide. interesting gur
Prof Diehl is absolutely brilliant, and if you can sit still long enough a wicked sense of humor will be revealed! His 300 level classes tend to be easier than his 100 level class. Knows everything about medieval Europe and then some! Shy but completely worth the time it takes to get to know him.
He is a very organized lecturer and knows a lot. He's not too hard if you do the study guide for 112. He requires a large paper in 316 but he gives you a lot of time and help if needed. I didn't do all of the readings and still got an A out of the class. I strongly recommend him.
this guy is an encyclopedia--nothing medieval happened w/o him knowing about it. dry tone and shy during lectures, but once he warms up he's quite funny. his 100-level classes are harder than the 300-level ones. i've learned more from him than any other teacher at this entire school.
This Prof. was very educated as to what happened and why. The only problem is the pizza box sitting in my trash has more personality and is able to keep me more awake than Prof. Diehl did. Very menial reading, except Einhard and Notker and The Song of Roland. The two best books. Too much reading
His lectures are hit and miss. Some are interesting others are boring. He knows everything about medieval history. Once you get to know him he is pretty funny.
Great
Medieval genius. I liked Diehl better than Garfinkle believe it or not. His sense of humor shines only when you keep up with him and the reading. I feel like he is one of those guys that dresses in medieval garb on weekends and has nerf sword fights with his buddies.
Diehl is nerdy and adorable. he mumbles and bumbles through the whole quarter, lectures are somewhat boring, paper was easy, and tests are kind of hard. Study hard and go to class, you'll catch on to what is important and what isn't.
Diehl is a genius- his lectures were the most boring thing I have ever had to listen to but pay attention becuase they really help with quizes and exams. Discussion group is boring as well- the books/weekly journals are annoying but easy. I thought Diehl was on of the funniest guys ever- his mumbling cracks you up and you can only laugh at him
he = the man
A great teacher with a vast amount of knowledge. Takes some getting used to the reading schedule and lecture style. Can be pretty funny at times especially as the class goes on. Highly recommended.
very good and clear
Excellent teacher. He loves the subject matter and it really shows in lecture. Although his jokes can be a little nerdy, he is incredibly smart and knew practically anything about the middle ages. I am definitely taking a class from him in the future, and I would suggest you do too.
if you like history, it won't be too bad. just sit up front for his lectures, and keep up with all the reading. you have to read one book a week for your discussion section, plus the textbook reading for the week. he isn't really that boring, and he is very interested in the material, so it makes the lecture not so awful. i would recommend it.
Condescending, arbitrary grader, extremely boring lectures. It's apparent he cares more about tenure & getting published, & that teaching is a means to those ends.I sat next to 2 hist. majors who said he's the worst hist. prof. they've had.Very smart, but has no clue how to teach.Lectures don't shed light on anything new from readings.Study guide is a joke.
He is a great teacher, but has to be your learning style of haveing lectures and taking notes and you must like history.
Diehl loves history like a fat kid loves cake. He is also caring and enthusiastically helpful. His pedagogy seems primarily focused on inculcating solid historical methods, both by example and instruction. Intricate lectures, challenging reading and exams, but everything is fair and geared towards the history student becoming a historian. Respect.
Excellent Prof! Lectures are jam-packed, but fascinating. He makes dry (and nerdy) jokes during lecture, which adds an air of levity. Bring your A-game to every lecture, and type up notes after every class and you should do just fine. :D
Took this teacher for 112 and 316, and will probably take him several more times. His lectures vary depending on what he's talking about, lots of outside reading, about a book a week. Nerdy sense of humor, but it works! Says 'uhm' alot, but really REALLY knows his stuff. my favorite prof. so far, and I am a history major.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Diehl is a great teacher, especially in a smaller class at the 300 level. He's a little shy at the beginning, but he'll warm up to your class - and he can be really funny! He really knows what he's talking about. I definitely reccommend this class, especially if you are passionate about history.
Uninspired, obtuse, mediocre pedagogy, both in and out of the classroom. Rarely publishes, and even then usually just book reviews. Definitely not the most shabby professor in the history department, but a solid representative of the mean.
Diehl isn't the most energetic prof, nor the most entertaining, but he knows his stuff. He loves the history that he teaches, and his lectures, albeit boring at times, do provide alot of info and go over most of the readings. if you're interested in the subject, take the class from diehl
He doesnt really have outlines when you take notes, but he can be funny. And you dont really get study guides for the tests, but they arent that difficult.
Prof Diehl is one of the most brilliant people I've met, he just knows EVERYTHING about anything related to history. His lecturers aren't the most flashy but if your interested enough to actually pay attention (and if not its your problem)theyre funny and interesting, assignments were easy, great class
Diehl rocks my world, pretty much. He seems really dull, but he has these hilarious and sarcastic moments. He knows medieval history thoroughly and can answer everything, pretty much. Absolutely brilliant. Take this class.
By far, the best professor I have had in this department. All good classes are challenging, and his are not to be taken by people who want an easy A. He knows what he is talking about, and if you're smart, you'll catch the humor in it. I've never had a professor more happy to help you out if you have any questions about the material.
I am currently finishing up my Master's degree overseas in the U.K. and Diehl's classes definitley prepared me for MA-level work. Everyone else seems to be struggling grade-wise except me, and I think Diehl had a very profound impact on both my writing anf research styles. He is just a solid, caring, old-school history teacher.
The only pure medieval history prof Western has. MAN did he find his nitch in life!! =D he breaths this stuff! Go to class as much as you can and ask lots of questions (he secretly LOVES getting tested on how much he knows) AWKWARD, but in a super good way! He will take some time to get warmed up in the intro class so give him time = ) Amazing guy!
The most knowledgeable person on the subject I've ever met. He has an awkward but endearing sense of humor. He'll really push you to do some serious research, but the results are rewarding. He seems to love handing out Bs, though. Review applies to 315, 316, 418, and 422.
For sure Diehl knows history of middle ages better than anyone else, but he forgets that we undergraduates are not at the same level he is. Therefore his grading is not fair at all, almost impossible to get anything higher than a B.
If you liked him at the lower level (112, 315, 316) then you need to sign up for one of his 400 level courses. The more advanced the topic, the more excited he is to teach it. Really awkwardly fun guy. Totally the cliche bumbling professor, but a total genius. Great prof all around, but he really shines at the 400 level.
I enjoyed his class despite the fact I don't find medieval history to be all that interesting. Hes a funny guy and rotationally weaves Monty Python jokes into lecture. The class is fairly reading intense but not bad. He is fair grader and I did better on most of the assignments than I had expected.
Diehl is a really good prof who makes the material interesting. I thought medieval history would be boring as hell but it was actually fascinating. He is actually pretty funny too, and super nerdy which is kind of entertaining. Take his classes!
He was incredibly knowledgeable and I consistently enjoyed his lectures. He was also extremely supportive and understanding when I had a personal illness get in the way of my studies and did everything he could to help me be successful. I eventually had to drop and he was still encouraging me for the upcoming quarter. Thank you Prof. Diehl!
Fantastic lectures, he knows his stuff and rarely relys on notes. He's a tough grader but his class will ensure that you learn what you need to. He also does a considerable amount of "cushioning" assignments.
i had no interest in history what-so-ever. but this class wasn't too bad, he reads straight from notes and you kinda just have to copy down what he says and study it later, but for some reason his passion for the subject makes it that much more exciting
Good guy, helpful if you ask him. Knows most of the information off the top of his head and is genuinely passionate about teaching what he loves. His "quizzes" are really a toss up, as they are just defining 2 terms from any of the possible terms that you've studied at all, but there are lots of easy assignments.
Diehl is hilarious and adorable! His lectures can be long and tedious sometimes, but he makes them as entertaining as possible. His tests aren't too bad. Just read over your lecture notes and study the terms.
Had him fall quarter 2011 for history 111. This guy rules, if you have any sort of interest for medieval history this is the guy to take. He can lecture forever on the middle ages and can answer any question in great detail. Loves to give out B's also.
At first I really wasn't excited to take this class, but he makes it so interesting! He barely even has to look at his notes when he's lecturing, and he's extremely passionate about his subject. He doesn't use lecture slides though, just an outline, so make sure you take lots of notes while he talks! You read a lottt of books too.
Lectures were a little droll, but his passion and dry humor made up for it. Lots of reading but he is a fair man and is understanding of life outside of class. Would highly recommend to those interested in studying history.
Do not take this class!! Lectures are extremely boring, he puts up a single slide with the days talking points. Extremely monotone during class. Discussion days are easy but very boring, he takes attendance during discussion. If you are looking for a GUR class, i strongly discourage taking HIST 112
Diehl has a strong passion for medieval history and the Kingdom of the Franks. You have to pay close attention to his lectures since there are no power points. Do not miss class! There are only lecture oulines provided. If you like history and dont mind a monotone professor, I would take this class.
Unless you are in love with medieval history, do not take this class! The whole lecture he just stands there and talks with no sort of notes except an outline with a few words of what he is going to talk about. 4-6 books to buy. Midterm and final is Bluebook. 1 book review and 1 ten page paper.
This class is unbelievably boring, seriously. He talks for the entire hour and 20 minutes in a completely monotone voice and leaves you entirely unprepared for the tests. He knows so much about what he is talking about he just doesn't teach it in a way that is interesting at all. I would highly recommend a different history course.
Professor Diehl was a wonderful professor. He is so passionate about Medieval history. You must go to class and you have to take good notes, as he only has an outline that guides your notes. He is very kind, low key, and has a wonderful dry sense of humor.
Dr. Diehl's lectures are a hoot. He is extremely knowledgeable and presents the material well. I would recommend that if you are interested in medieval history, take this course!
I skipped a lot of class and turned in a paper late. he was very understanding, and I still did okay in the class. his lectures are long, but well worth paying attention. The day after everyone is supposed to have read the book he ends up going over the whole thing anyway so I only did about half the reading.
Diehl is a very nice professor, and he says he's passionate about history. However, I found it near impossible to stay awake, even when we discussed the crusades. It's gotten to where most people skip and only attend for quizzes and to turn in map assignments, which attending the discussion groups. Overall, just a very boring class I wouldn't rec.
Dr. Diehl is a knowledgeable guy but his lectures are incredibly boring. He says he loves history but you can't tell that by the way he talks. As long as you turn in all the assignments and go to the reading groups you will do fine in this class. You can easily use Wikipedia to pass his exams.
Professor Diehl is a thorough expert on his classes, I've taken HIST 112 and HIST 320 with him, and he knows the material well enough to lecture completely from memory, with a lecture outline available on the projector. He's kind of quiet sometimes, but he's got a sharp sense of humor and usually managed to keep me engaged even when on no sleep.
Professor Diehl is a fantastic person and is incredibly knowledgeable about everything he teaches, giving lectures completely from memory. With this being said, it can be a bit difficult to stay awake in his class at times and his lectures can be boring, but if you pay attention, stay awake, and are somewhat interested in history, take Diehl.
Diehl is very intelligent, but not very good at passing what he knows on to his students. He's old school (no powerpoints), which makes it hard to follow along. I took 315 and 316 and got B's, but it was hard. There's a book review, midterm, 10 page paper, final and participation. LOTS of reading every night. Overall, he's okay.
Had to read 7 novels which seems a bit excessive for a 100 level GUR class. There's also a one page essay due on each book, not super hard just tedious. Two quizzes and the midterm and final, as well as one 4-6 pg paper thats 30% of your grade. Lectures are pretty dry, he doesn't use slides. Attendance isn't required but lectures aren't online
There isn't any question complex or stupid enough about the middle ages that can stump him. His lectures can get dry at times but his jokes fit his character perfectly. If you participate in class and show curiosity, you will learn a great deal and seeking his help outside of class will benefit you greatly.
Peter is very knowledgable and passionate about his work. The main thing I disliked about this course was the very heavy and dense lectures. Only an outline to follow along to made it very hard to stay concentrated. Also there was an insane amount of reading for a 100 level course. Overall, it was very interesting and doable if you put effort in.
I had Professor Diehl for History of the Middle Ages class in my major. Diehl's lectures are incredibly dry although he does seem somewhat passionate about the subject. Diehl is an incredibly hard grader and does not make an effort to support students. Was graded down for my arguments and opinions not being the same as his in my papers.
History 112 is a horrible GUR. His lectures are dry and boring. His tests are lengthy and old school. He requires you to write several essays in a short amount of time and then grades them rigorously. I am a motivated student and took his classes serious but was still strongly challenged. Simply put Diehl makes a GUR far harder than it has to be
The Best word to fit this professor would be dry. the lectures are just him standing there and going over the information. It is very heavy and could be dry at times. there are papers but they are short and sweet. He knows his material but there is nothing that stands out to him from the rest. he is a standard boring and dry professor from movies.
Every class was the same hour and a half long of him talking in the most monotone boring voice, I was struggling with depression and anxiety and mentioned it to him and he blew me off and failed me. Brutal professor
There's quite a bit of reading, but if you prioritize and make a plan about what and how to read, it isn't that bad. He's a bit of a hard grader when it comes to the essays, but it's mostly fair and always paired with pretty good feedback. He's got an old man's humor, but its fun and endearing. Good teacher.
If you don't pay attention in lectures, Diehl is not the professor for you. I will say that I really enjoyed his lectures, but you can't miss a class as each lecture is rarely powerpoint heavy, and mostly notes coming from Diehl himself. I enjoyed this class but beware of your learning style before taking this class
Took his HIST112 class. Very reading heavy, be prepared to read a book every week (unless you're good at doing essays from summaries). Essays due almost every week, and his classes are purely lecture other than discussion days for the book assigned that week (take notes on a computer unless you write fast). He is a kind grader and is very sweet.
Diehl is a very kind person but lacks modernity in his class. Upon the paragraphs of texts on his lectures and turning in physical copies of papers, his class is VERY dry/stale and is old style. While he knows his stuff, the class itself is painful to sit through & isn't engaging at all. He does give pretty good feedback but can be a tough grader.
Almost impossible to sit through. Puts paragraphs upon paragraphs of information in his powerpoint sides. His teaching style (dry/stale/outdated) is not something I retained any information from. Made the class almost impossible to attend and attendance is mandatory. I would not advise taking this class unless you have to. Exams are closed note.
He's a very kind and knowledgable man, however his teaching style is very out of date. PowerPoints are 10-20 slides long, with dense paragraphs, he also talks the whole time the slides are on screen. Do not try to take your notes by hand, it won't work out well. Exams are closed note, you read a book every week and chapters out of the textbook.
Really horrible grader, no rubrics for what he is looking for in any of the essays, and he will often comment on things in a really snarky manner, midterm is one of the worst constructed midterms I have ever had (closed note essay, written in 80 minutes, need quotes from primary sources, no prior knowledge to the prompts) High on himself. Dont take
Professor Diehl is a professor who has endless expertise in medieval history. As someone passionate about this era the lectures were very interesting. Those who have written bad reviews for Professor Diehl probably are not capable of appreciating the lectures and information. Effort is required but if you love history you will succeed.
The exams were very difficult and harshly graded and the papers were the same way. I would be given Cs on everything with no real explanation of why except for some other random facts related to the topic. Pretty challenging class for a 112 and would not recommend it unless you have a lot of time to put into it.
Absolute wet blanket of a prof. Lecture slides look like they are copy and pasted from wikipedia. Absolute monologue of a lecture, and its almost 100% political history. Not much history about culture or civilization at all.
Lectures can be boring but you can tell he tries very hard. Total Grandpa vibes. Not as tough of a grader as I thought he would be. I learned a lot and had an overall great experience.
Professor Diehl is definitely a knowledgeable teacher of history. He answers every question and is very respectful to all his students and is very lenient on papers and grading which is new to me. He provides good feedback and is very clear on his assignments and exams. Take his class if you like history and participate.
Beware his 2 nightmare exams. A study guide is provided. START EARLY AND NOT THE NIGHT BEFORE. There are over 80-90 terms to know enough about to write at least 3 sentences. Then 5-10 questions to write an essay for. YOU DON'T KNOW WHICH YOU'LL GET SO STUDY FOR ALL OF THEM. You can get away with knowing 3 questions per 5. Take if you like writing.
Peter's class is incredibly lecture heavy with lots of memorization. classic college stuff. he definitely has a passion for his work. The class is pretty hard though. not too bad.
If you are genuinely into history and are ready to go deep into the readings assigned each week, take this class. I took this class however as a GUR, thinking it would be relatively easy study material and that ended up being a super frustrating decision. There's a fair amount of difficult textual analysis required.
- Passionate to a fault; sometimes he goes off on tangents but they're silly and bring the material to life. - Exam essay questions are posted in advance!! Yay!! - Lots of reading but you can still get most of the content from class. - Responds quickly, super understanding of personal issues and extensions. - Difficult class but I love this guy.
If you don't have to take this class I would not take it.
