Really cares about his students.
not helpful, pompous, obnoxious...allows certain students too much control
Excellent teacher- very knowledgable of subject/material, very helpful and always has time.

Nice guy once you're a well-known and proven student.
ARROGANT
WHAT AN UNFIT HUMAN BEING TO TEACH THE FUTURE OF THIS INDUSTRY
Very biased, has his favorites, and only cares about you on his time, on his terms. He'd smile and joke with you one minute...and then sign you up to graduate a year late the next. watch out
Screwed me over with advisment... i ended up failing 2 classes that i didn't even need to take because of him. Very sneaky man. Smokes alot of pot too.
This is how its done in TV..even though I have not been a part of the industry in 20 years. Don't even think about changing this mans ways, because he is always right. no matter what you do, make sure you kiss up.
prove to him you WANT to be in this field. he does have his favorites, become one. participate a lot and when pitching ideas, pick organizations that help people out, be a do gooder and kiss up. it will get you everywhere.
He's a dick. He plays favorites. Anything else?
Prove you want to be in this field, he'll go out of his way to help you any time. Prove to him you're not interested, and he'll be the hardest Professor you've had.
Dr. G. was one of the best teachers I ever had. He was a total hard ass and taught me that not to take short cuts. He berated me when I needed it and praised me when i deserved it. I got my first industry job through and intership he helped me get. He'll get a nod in the Oscar speech.
I got an A- from this Prof twice and still hate him!! He is arrogant and gets a huge power trip out of being a prof. I agree that he is unfit to be in a teaching environment!! He is often unclear and looks down on you when you ask for help.

Barnacle Bill here. Gershon was my advisor/mentor when he taught at an absurd little school in FL. If you're creative and interesting, he'll give you one of his kidneys.
Very hard and doesn't baby you, which is exactly why he is the perfect fit to teach 165. Hopefully he'll continue teaching for a long time.
A very good class, and a very good instructor.
I graduated from Hofstra a year ago and let me tell ya.... yes he was a hard ass, and a tough professor, but in all honesty I'm glad he was. I wouldn't be where I am today if it werent for him. He's one of my fav AVF professors at Hofstra.

Always pushed me to be the best that I could be. A professor that cares deeply about his students. A mentor and a friend.
Great human being. He was my senior advisor and got me through a lot of difficult choices academically, emotionally and career-wise. 4 years out of Hofstra and he's still there for advice. He gives full attention to every single student and cares deeply about every project. Dr G rocks!
If you show effort and passion, he'll truly care about you. Prove to him that you're not only inspired but also care about helping your classmates and you'll win him over. If you get this man on your side, he'll be there to help and advise you years after graduation. I still keep in touch with him and consider him a friend.
I keep thinking that most of his good material is gleaned from his smarter friend living in the greater Somerville area.

great professor! very helpful and genuine....explains work clearly and is fair in terms of grading...would take another class with him in the future
Dr. G. is the best television production teacher at Hofstra. I went from being a mediocre student to a very dedicated hardworking tv student. He makes you work your absolute hardest which you benefit from so much at the end. He is not very technical and he is a very easy grader when it comes to packages. I definetly recommend him!!
Prof. Gershon has been my worst teacher at hofstra. He is the most arrogant unhelpful teacher ever. He makes every student feel bad about themeselves. It is not like I got a bad grade in this class but he is disrespectful to his students and their opinions and definately should not be taken. Anyone who says otherwise is blind!!!
Dr. G is fantastic. I have had taken him for a number of classes and believe me, he REALLY CARES about his students! he always gives the benefit of the doubt. I have learned a great deal from him and whenever i have asked for help he has been more than eager to do whatever he can. he knows what hes talking about. he very smart and even more kind.
Dr. Gershon is honestly one of the most personable and qualified professors at Hofstra University. He is the most geniunely nice and honest professor I have ever had. His qualifications and his experiences make him an AMAZING teacher. If you have the chance to take a class with him, consider yourself lucky.
Professor Gershon is by far the best professor in the department. Anyone that feels the need to write a poor evaulation clearly has not taken the time to care about their class or appreciate the wonderful experience and experience Dr. G has to offer. He constantly goes above and beyond what any professor has ever done for television students.
I think he is a good professor. I recommend him, and you can learn a lot from him. He respects students who work hard.
Good teacher. Knows a lot about the material. He will keep the class focused on the goals of the lesson, and anyone who says he is rude simply lacks the discipline to focus. Definitely take.
Some of these kiss-ass praises make me think this guy has even less of a life than I was led to believe he did in class. He’s not bad if the wasteland of television is your thing. But for anyone with a brain and without the inclination to waste hours of your life on nonsense fluff projects, I’d look elsewhere whenever possible.
An old fogie. This man needs to get with the times. If you show any signs of individuality he will try and stomp them out of existence.
Dr.G is a truly great prof..at first he kinda comes off as a little stiff but dont get discouraged he is not only into what he does but he makes the class exciting...watching clips and making projects was interesting...honestly one of the best profs i have ever had!! he is a nice guy and was always helpful!!
This guy isthe biggest jerk. Has 2 be the worst teacher at Hofstra, & Ive had alot. He discourages any student motivation. He wants 2 fail students & make sure they stay at Hofstra for decades. I dont know how he got hired. Yet another paycheck teacher at Hofstra. DO NOT TAKE HIM! Film has been my passion & he makes me rethink it.
He chooses his favorites. Sticks to them. Does not give anyone else a chance.
Definitely has favorites and it beats me why he values their work so much when others' work is clearly superior. Crystal clear when it comes to grading, tough on students. Go ahead, whine about how he teaches, but Dr. G gets the most out of his students.
G is a very effectivedemanding teacher, you will learn how to use the equipment, shoot and edit a package by the end of the semester. The class and his teaching style are designed to make you look bad if you do not put out the effort or produce bad work or screw over your class. Dont break his rules work hard and you will stay off his bad side
Has an ego the size of mount rushmore. I could tell from the first day I saw him that it would be rough dealing with him (before I even had him as a teacher). As the days have droned on it is clear that his pride gets the best of him and there is an incredibly amount of bs.
Loves hearing his own voice - really detracts from the class
He is tough, but he really pushes you to produce your best work. He has made me a better TV student and made me raise my expectations of myself.
Why does noone like G? I LOVE him. He was very nice. Treat him with respect and he will do the same. The class is pretty strait forward. I reccomend him greatly especially if you enjoy filming. This is more on the field package work but you really can have your own creative choice with it. At least for the last 2 projects.
ah G, well if your taking him for 164 you must have had him before. He can be really strict but I still respect him. i really learn a lot from him. Not as much film and TV but more being responsible and managing my time right. You gotta work hard but you'll find yourself thanking him later. FYI itself is very difficult though.
Love Dr. Gershon, hes super smart and knows his stuff. Hes a sweetheart too!
If you have made it this far good for you. G, as you well know, is tough, however he knows his stuff. 165 is a killer course and lots of work, but if you have made it through the program you are ready for it. Only for BS students but its a great class and a great time to bond before you graduate.
only 350 characters to talk about this? Well this won't do justice. By now you have to know what to expect with G for this class. Don't even THINK about skipping ANYTHING that just doesn't happen. You will learn a lot about yourself with this class. Be sure you try to work on projects you enjoy. It will make it that much better of an expereience.
I love G in a Production envirorment. However this was the first time I took him for a lecture class. He is so much better in a production class. This class is a basic requirement and he gives a few quizzes that are multiple choice but very detailed. Read the book. Page by page. Take notes in class.
Dr. Gershon is one of the best professors at Hofstra. He does kick your ass, but you'll thank him for it later. FYI is difficult and it runs your life, but as I mentioned you'll be happy in the long run. As long as you understand how he works and the show formula, you'll be fine. Don't expect to have a life though...
This guy may be funny, but this class was a massive source of stress for me. His grading policy makes no sense, and on top of that his quizzes consist mostly of info he just expects you to read. Then to top it off there is a case study, and when I think of all that i could've gotten done instead of that thing, it pisses me off!
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll work harder than you've ever worked before. FYI is killer but I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn anything. He really knows what he's doing which makes me respect him that much more. He respects those who try as well. Just be prepared for a semester of stress. He's a wonderful professor and a great man. Take him!
Let me tell you straight on. Professor Gershon is a hard teacher, only because he wants to you succeed which is understandable. However, if you aren't apart of the clique of favorites that he already has, it's hard to express freely. I reconsidered my position in TV for the sole purpose that I did not feel as welcome. If you take him, be on time.
Professor Gershon is hands down the best professor at Hofstra. If you are willing to work, and you actually care about TV/Production/Media, he will be more than willing to help you. He is beyond kind, and genuinely cares about his students if you are willing to care about the material. He is always willing to come to campus to meet outside of class
Very knowledgeable about what he is teaching and he loves what he does. He is very knowledgable about what is going on in the School of Comm and he cares about all of his students. I would take any class he teaches
Gershon has 40 years of television experience. If you show that you care about the television/media world and that this is what you want to do, he'll help you in every way he can. Gershon only cares if you show that you care. The class is very inciteful & can be fun at times. Show up, take notes, and do the assignments. It's really easy if you care
His frantic emails may cause u a minor panic attack, but he wants his students to succeed. He cares both in and outside of class and has no problem telling u when u f*ck up, but hes not there to coddle hes there to prepare u for the industry. Hes nearly 70, but has the spirit/energy of a 30 year old. Hes made me better and Im forever thankful
He knows his stuff, but unfair at times and unforgiving. Harsh late policy, even if serious events are taking place that he's wary of.
Love this man. Lectures are engaging and not boring. Probably the best class I'm taking this semester. You're graded solely on the papers you write for this class but they're not demanding. MAKE SURE YOU READ.
Gershon is one of my favorite professors that I've had in the school of Comm. he really knows his history and I would easily take him again.
Gershon was a great professor! Although his class was definitely heavily based on lectures, just be prepared and appreciate what he has to say. He has a lot of insightful commentary on his career in the field of communication and is open to share it with students. Light work load, just stay on top of papers and youre set.
Dr. Gershon is, so far, my favorite professor I have taken. His lectures are never boring and he uses his real-life experience to help students connect and understand a lesson. You do need to make sure not to miss any assignments and to take notes during lectures.
I adored Professor Gershon. He had us laughing every day and is a very engaging lecturer. You will NOT be bored. I learned so much in this course and found it really interesting. His assignments are set on a clear schedule, and he grades fairly. You will not fall behind on papers. The textbook readings are long but useful.
I love Professor Gershon! He the perfect fit for the Mass_001 course with his great humor and actually intriguing paper guidelines and prompts. I remember being so excited to go to his class and the activities and class discussions we would do would make the class that much better.
Dr. Gershon was my favorite professor from this semester. His class was entertaining, and very interesting - I couldn't stop telling my friends about what we learned in his class. I was actually excited to attend his classes. He even helped inspire me to switch my major to journalism! If you have the chance to take this professor DO IT!!!
Such a fun and kind professor who encourages questions and feedback from students. No midterm or final, and the assignments given are very clear and he's not a super harsh grader. I loved his class and was genuinely interested in the material, so definitely recommend taking him if you have the chance!
Dr. Gershon was the first professor I ever had at University and he is amazing. He is so clearly incredibly passionate about this course. He doesn't want to teach you anything he wants to show you things and let you understand for yourself. If you have the opportunity to take him please, please do.
I absolutely LOVED Professor Gershon. His classes were pretty lecture-heavy but I thought they were fascinating. Several writing assignments over the course but they're not too difficult if you don't procrastinate and he's not a super tough grader. We had a textbook but barely used it. He was my favorite professor, definitely recommend his course!!
Professor Gershon is one of the best professors I've had at Hofstra so far. You can definitely go without buying the textbook, you won't use it for any assignment (although it may help you understand class material more in depth). He will tell the class his life story, and doesn't hold back on his opinions, which makes him hilarious.
Dr. Gershon is one of my favorite people in the world. He always made me feel intelligent and valued. Connecting with him personally was the best part of my semester when I took this class. Such a nice and funny guy, definitely deserving of his emeritus title.
Took this class my fall semester of freshman year, Dr. Gershon is incredibly knowledgable and personable, which makes absorbing every lecture easy- plus he told stories from his own experience in the industry. Students complain he's a harsh grader, I can't disagree more. Dr. Gershon he lays out what he wants from you; his expectations are clear.
I had to drop this class because it was so boring that I never went. If you miss five classes, you automatically get an F,which I honestly think is ridiculous. He goes on tangents that relate nothing to what we are learning. We talked about the JFK assassination for three weeks straight. He is very clear about expectations, though, which is nice.
Professor Gershon is amazing. Try to participate as much as you can, whether it be simply through eye contact or asking questions. The only work you do in the class is reading and papers. Everything is straightforward and you'll be fine if you put effort into your work. He's very understanding so try to have a relationship with him. He's awesome!
You can tell that Professor Gershon likes what he does. His lectures are interesting and quite funny. He gives great feedback when asked and cares about his students. There are 6 papers you'll need to write and they come one after another with no breaks; it can be a lot. If you stay on top of your work, it's pretty reasonable.
My favorite professor. Genuinely cares about his career and students. No tests or quizzes - only papers. Gives more than enough time for every paper and follows the syllabus to a T.
I literally would show up early to class, it was my first in the morning, to talk to the guy. He's incredibly smart, interesting, and knows what he's talking about. His lectures are fun, and he tries to make everyone have a good time. Just have a chat with him, he's awesome and literally everyone who I've spoken to him about loves him.
mass media was easily my favorite class i've taken at hofstra thus far (second semester freshman). gershon is super knowledgeable, experienced, and kind. he wants to hear your perspective and is always willing to have a convo after class. just make sure you show up and follow guidelines on papers and you'll be fine. he really appreciates engagement
Mass 001 with this man was amazing. As a second semester freshman, he provided very clear instructions on what to do and was clear on his grading policies. He is a respected man and cares for his students all the same. He does speak about the current situation of the country and thanks to him I have a deeper understanding of the world today.
He has clear expectations of what he is looking for on papers and outlines it clearly which is nice, but the class time is a waste. The things he spends time lecturing and rambling on about in class does not relate to the papers you have to write. He is highly critical of Trump and republicans calling them stupid on many occasions. Was not a fan.
He is extremely political, if you're right winged then good luck. He makes it uncomfortable to share your opinions, though he says he's very open and accepting. Every class is political and he uses any possible opportunity he can to bash republicans. I was very uncomfortable the entire class. Seven papers, all worth a lot of credit.
What a joy to have this man as a teacher. My absolute favorite class, always looked forward to it. People complain about how political the class/he could be but it's important. the class is about media overtime and it ties into our present exceptionally well, no matter how political. Grading policies and expectations very clear. Great Guy
He is seriously the best professor I've ever had! I've always sucked at social studies/history, and idk what he did but an A- is insane for me to get in that subject. He's super funny and engaging. His grading and attendance policies are very strict, but it really helped me stay on top of my work. Definitely take his class if you get the chance.
