Gough is an amazing professor. He makes his lectures interesting and shows a lot of films, pictures, and clips with them. One of the best history teachers here at sac state. I learned a lot from his class and passed every test. He's also hilarious which made the class fun. You won't regret taking one of his classes.
Loved the guy. He's very sweet, and calm. He is very knowledgable about the topic, he is like a walking library. He is very spacey sometimes, but overall I have recommended him to everyone.
Willing to answer any and all questions. He really likes it when students participate and will definitely reward participation.
Great guy! The class is easy as long as you do the Study Guides for the tests. It's an easy A as long as you study the study guides. There is a short essay on each test and he gives you the topic choices on the Study Guide! There are 2 Midterms, 1 Final, and a Paper due at the end of the semester.
Prof Gough is a wonderful teacher. He's smart and capable. His teaching style is fun and engaged and never off topic. He super funny and in my class there was even a time he brought his banjo in and played it. Overall I would definitely take him again.
Good teacher, passionate about history. Uploaded study sheets before each exam that made for great study tools.
Peter was a nice dude who gave really easy tests. Love this fool and his banjo. Pete if you're reading this, I love you.
Awesome teacher! He is clear and straight forward. As long as you pay attention in class you will pass quizzes and test. If you love history or have a liking for the past and the stories behind it this class is a easy A for you.
Only 3 exams the whole semester, and he gives a study guide before each one. If you do the study guide you will ace the exam. Exams aren't difficult at all. One oral history paper due at the end of the semester. Cool GE class, I would recommend it to anyone.
Great guy and class! AS long as you go to class and take notes in lecture you'll pass every exam, It's usually verbatim! He also switches up his teaching with videos and demonstrations which are really helpful. Highly recommended class and instructor! And because i know you might be reading this Prof. Gough, thank you, it really was a pleasure!
This professor is super easy. Three exams including a study guide, that will help on the exams, with an essay in each and it's really not an essay only a few paragraphs about the topic. If you hate writing essays don't take this class because there's a big oral history paper at the end. That's the only thing that sucks about this class.
Very easy class, don't buy the book. He gives study guides but do go to class for the notes because it's all based on what he talks about. Easy grader and do well on the written portion of the tests.
Well cultured in every aspect of Us History has insightful information on different characters of American history and is not a tough grader.
Professor Gough is a very nice, approachable person. He's so chill and not so uptight like other professors. Not strict at all, his coursework is very simple if you consider yourself a responsible student. He does tend to go off topic during his lectures, but in a good, interesting way. I definitely plan on taking the other courses he teaches.
Professor Gough is a great guy. He knows his stuff and really wants every student to pass. Gave a study guide for each test that had basically everything you needed to know(as long as attendance stayed up). Gets a little side tracked some times but is a really great professor. Also mixes in a lot of short videos and movie clips.
Prof. Gough is a walking library. His lectures are not boring because he actually interacts with the class. He plays short videos which really helps give more insight on a topic and keeps it interesting. Tests are easy because he has study guides. I definitely recommend him.
The man, the myth, the legend. Professor Gough fails to disappoint me. I enjoy attending his class every day, even though attendance isn't that important. His lectures consist of "vocabulary words" listed on the board that he discusses in depth, and that's basically all that is on the test. Side note: one time he played the banjo.
He is an amazing professor. He wants you to pass. His tests are easy bc he'll give a study guide. His lectures are straight to the point. He's really cool and so nice. If you ask for help, he'll cooperate.
Professor Gough is by far the best professor Ive had. I used to hate history, but now I really enjoy it .
Professor Gough is a very laid back guy, that is passionate about the subject, that he teaches. He also provides study review guides before every Exam, which makes a lot easier to get an A on the exams. Gives good feedback, and is also willing to manipulate due dates for the students benefits
Professor Gough is by far one of the best professors in Sac State for History!! He is amazing, he is very passionate about what he teaches, he makes class very interesting. He is such a nice, great professor! Attendance is very important if you want to know exactly what is going to be in the tests. I 110% recommend him, like I said amazing prof.
Dr. Gough is amazing! During his lectures, he always mentions the importance of each term and what the answer would most likely be if its on the exam. He gives out a study sheet about a week before every exam; therefore, you know exactly what to study. Theres 3 exams with an essay each time and if you study and go to class, its an easy A.
Attendance isn't mandatory but good to go because he does go over the test the day before. He's caring and tests are easy. Accepts late assignments and answers all of your questions.
Gough really knows his stuff! He goes off topic sometimes, but it's all interesting stuff. He gives an in depth study guide for the tests and they are pretty straight forward. He is unorganized but always available to talk to you about anything. I recommend him for an easy History class!
He is an awesome professor who knows alot about his field of work. He is very passionate & likes getting the class involved into his lectures. Attendance is mandatory, but he basically gives us all the exam answers through his lectures & with the study guide that he provides us, so do ensure that you complete and study that study guide thoroughly.
I am a History major and this is the best class I have taken at Sac State. Dr. Gough has an amazing amount of information and is a great teacher. Very very nice man also.
Very informative class. Topics included Buffalo Bill, Charlie Chaplin, comic books, and music that I did not know about before. The prof even plays banjo and interviews he had with Pete Seger. LOTS of reading, but all very interesting. Attendance is mandatory, but you know what will be on the test if you go. Great class and teacher.
Wow, greatest class EVER! I have always hated history until now. This class not only changed the way I see history, but the way I see culture. Dr. Gough just published a book on popular culture, so he is really knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. I have recommended this class to all my friends but next semester is already full. :(
Dr. Gough is a pretty good choice for a professor. His class is interesting and he does a good job of covering a lot of material. He tends to offer only constructive criticism, so you don't feel at odds with him. He does interject a lot of extra thoughts during his lectures, which can make them hard to follow.
Prof. Gough was such a nice and awesome teacher!! I really enjoyed his class as well as learned a lot about pop culture in a way that was easy to follow along with and fun. Gough is such a chill, laid back teacher who makes his class so easy. Go to class, do the work, study and you'll pass! Super easy totally recommend!!
Very nice & laid back. Just show up, write down the terms he has up, listen to his lectures, and take 3 exams + 1 easy final paper. He grades very easy & exams are just basically terms/people & you match the definition of it along with a short essay on info. that he gives you in advance. Easy class, a bit boring sometimes, but worth taking!
Loved Gough and loved this class. Extremely interesting material and he teaches it with real passion. Pretty easy class but you'll learn plenty.
Write some essays and get an A! This class was of the best I have taken in college!
Professor Gough was the homie! If you go to the lecture and participate sometimes and you will forsure pass with flying colors. He has a few exams that also have short essays but they are fairly easy. He gives 2 topics on what the essays will be on in advance. I highly recommend taking him. He also does extra credit!
Just LOVE this prof! Took his pop culture last semester and taking social history this semester. Gough is the best. I am switched my major to history because of his classes.
He's very interested in our class, which was about film history. He grades our tests and essay pretty leniently and give pretty good feedback on them. I would definitely recommend taking his classes since he seems like a really nice guy and a very motivated professor.
I took Peter for History 17A my first semester and I loved him! In every class, he would throw up a document of vocab words and lectured on all words. There were 3 exams... very easy if you attended class. Would take Peter again if I have to.
Peter Gough was a very great online professor. He was always very clear in his assignments. He was very quick with emails and gradings too. Best online professor I've had. Gough was also very engaging too sometime's he'll post videos talking about the topic. Very well organized class. Weekly discussions posts but it's not hard at all.
Class is super easy and Gough is a real G. You don't need to come to class but it helps for attendance. 2 exams (1takehome and other is essay exam) 1 essay (your choice)and 1 final (in class). You watch movie clips the whole class. You don't need textbook. Exams easy, all IDs and short answer some M/C. Def would take again, he is so passionate!
This was a great online course, and I would recommend this course to everybody. Class grading criteria very clear, and grades assignments very fair. Online course was well structured. Composed of 10 discussions, 2 short essays, and one final essay. Which is very do able, and easy to manage. Just remember to post, respond, and participate.
Lectures are very interesting. Professor is passionate and very enthusiastic in topics and discussions. Exams are easy. Study guide provided.
Told by a friend to take this online class. Turned out to be really interesting and he made it easy. Just weekly discussion posts for the chapter that needed to be read and having to respond to one other person's post. He even gives extra credit for posts that had some extra effort, easy for an interesting topic. 3 essays, seems easy grader
I had this class online and he was still my favorite class professor of the semester. If you follow his directions, you will pass. I typically spent up to an hour each week reading posting for the weekly DB. super doable. 3 essays which are easy. If you follow directions, you will get a good grade on them. No test, rent the Textbook from bookstore
-Very humble and kind. -No homework. -3 exams, no final. Multiple choice and one small essay. He tells you the essay topics ahead of time. Exams are not cumulative. -Extra credit assignment: Autobiography paper, 1-2 pages. -No group assignments. -Attendance is graded. -If you have any complications, he always works with you. -Passionate teacher.
Watched films every class. Lecture was fun for me, learned cool things about Hollywood actors/actresses. He will call from roll if people don't participate in his easy questions. I've learned to love & appreciate b&w films, they were way better then than now. 2 midterms; all written. 1 in class 1 take home. Study guide was the test for in class.
So I took this class bc I was looking for an online upper-division GE, and saw the great reviews here. TAKE HIM! Weekly discussions and 2-3 essays. As long as you keep up with deadlines, you're good to go. Read the material, write a reasonable amount for each post, and it's an easy A. By the end, I was really interested in the subject! Thank you PG
Great professor! I would definitely recommend Professor Gough to every student wanting to take HIST/HRS 169 (Hollywood+America) at Sacramento State. The final course involves 2 exams, daily attendance and/or weekly discussion boards, and 1 final paper. He does post videos, articles, and study guides on Canvas for reference.

Dr. G is super nice and entertaining and made this class bearable. This was a super easy class; everything in the textbook is covered in lecture. Test content comes directly from the lectures. Grade is based on three tests and attendance! I definitely want to take another class of his before I graduate!
Great professor and awesome online class. 1 required book, weekly discussions, 3 essays and 1 quiz. If you do the readings discussions the exams and homework are easy. Each week a couple lecture videos that were less than 15 minutes, so it was easy to learn. Optional Zoom lecture. The subject was interesting and I totally recommend this class!
Easy credit! Great professor and great class to take in my first semester at Sac State AND during a pandemic. Read the lectures and watch movies for the weekly discussions which is homework easy points. Follow the instructions to do the essays and do the quiz at the end of the semester. Textbook not really necessary because I only used it twice.
Dr. Gough is an absolute amazing professor! He really cares about all his students and you can tell from the feedback he gives you on your assignments. This class was really fun and interesting, and the best part was that there was no quizzes/exams! Read the material, take time on your writing, and you'll get an A!
Professor Gough cares about the subject and about his students. He gives great feedback and grades very generously, I missed a point or two in the entire semester! Just read through his lectures, skim the book and be thoughtful in your discussion posts and you'll get an easy A! His writing assignments are nice because he gives you a lot of freedom.
Wow, he is probably the most chill, approachable and considerate professor on Sac State. There is a good amount of homework, he gives you plenty of flexibility to answer your homework your way. The movies are very cool and the optional zoom sessions are great. Highly recommend teacher!
Love his class!!!! He ended up dropping exams due to the pandemic but we had a discussion post every week which was just talking about what we liked about the chapter and his lecture & 3 essays!!
One discussion every week which you can talk about anything you read. If youre looking for an easy class that isnt overwhelming this is it.
Professor Peter Gough is responsible and pleasant . His class is interesting and easy. If you are looing for a class that you can get a good grade without much difficulty, I would recommend Prof. Peter's class HIST166. A discussion every week and three essays in total. Follow his instructions and read the assignments, and you will do well.
second time with this professor and I love it! One discussion due every week & about 3 exams. He is a lenient grader, as long as you put in effort. No quizzes. Just essays which are the exams
The class is straightforward: do the assignments and give you feedback based on what you learned. He wanted his class to be engaging on a weekly basis while also wanted to cooperate with every student he works with from scheduling issues and to help them out as much as he can. Really supportive and get to learn a lot from the course because of him.
Super easy class! You have an assigned reading every week, one discussion post per week (no minimum, maximum words, just respond to 1 classmate), 3 essays, and 2 multiple choice quizzes. He is lenient and gives additional time as long as you communicate with him. I would take him to cover upper division GE.
Dr. Gough is a great History professor. You can tell he truly cares about his students and the material he is teaching. You have to do a decent amount of reading but nothing you wouldn't expect from an upper GE course. If you can take one of his classes, I highly recommend it.
Dr.Gough is awesome! Mid lecture heavy but if you don't miss classes you'll be alright. 2 essays and multiple-choice quizzes+discussion post. Be ready to read since he does follow the text and is good for background knowledge while in class/lectures. Thankfully the textbook is an easy reader. Overall, Gough is a great professor! Take him!
attendance is mandatory/graded, 2 exam essays + 1 mc exam + 1 final essay, choice to do discussion board (able to talk about ANYTHING about the film) or attend zoom discussion every week, class time consists of watching films (most are fun/interesting) and discussing about it after, sometimes calls on random students, dr. gough is super nice too!!
one of the nicest and funniest professors I've ever taken and also the easiest A+ ever. the assignments are actually fun and easy. a discussion each week and 3 papers. the final paper can be literally anything. you need to attend class because he keeps track of that. I would take this class again. very fun and lots of extra credit opportunities
Besides constantly getting off topic, the pop culture class was great. He would veer off to talk about modern pop culture, which was fine, but it put us weeks behind so we weren't able to talk about pop culture after 1970. 3 easy, open-book quizzes and 3 papers, that's it. It is almost impossible to get anything lower than 100%
One of the best professors I've ever had. Actually wants to help students and cares about what he's teaching. Assignment guidelines were clear, and he was always available to help if you needed it.
Professor Gough was very kind and understanding. The only homework is readings which I didn't really do but still passed. As long as you attend class and do your best on the exams you'll be great. There were 2-3 papers (exams) just about some actors but they were opinion based so it was easy. Definitely take him!
He might take a bit longer to grade the exams, most of which are essay-based. He is motivated to talk about the films and the events but he gets behind a lot based on the syllabus. Expect to have a weekly discussion.
This is my second time having this professor and he's very kind. He wants you to succeed and gives feedback when he can. 3 exams (2 essay based and 1 multiple choice) and a final essay at the end. He's a little vague on details, but he emails back quickly to answer questions. Attendance was mandatory which I wish he could be a little lenient on.
Professor Gough was a great professor! I am not a film major and needed this class for units and I have to say this was a great class to take for it. There are 3 papers but they are short and easy. He does take attendance, and weekly discussions unless you choose to join the Friday zooms instead of doing the discussions.
Class is extremely easy, he talks about a few topics of the time period that is currently taking place for each chunk of chapters. 3 tests which each have a multiple choice test that you can search up answers for aswell as a short 1 page essay about a given topic.
He's a nice guy, but his lectures are somewhat boring and have surface-level insights. Three writing exams that get slightly longer each time and a weekly discussion post OR the option to join a weekly Zoom. As long as you show you're putting some thought into your responses, you should pass easily. Wouldn't take unless you really need the credits.
One of the easiest professors ever within the History department. He even brought in his banjo and played some songs! The only downside is the godawful "With Amusement for All" book. It's like an encyclopedia of pop culture. Thankfully you aren't required to memorize every single piece of text within that book.
He was the sweetest professor ever! I really really liked him! I really recommend taking him because he really wants you to succeed!!
Attendance is graded and has long lectures but is an amazing professor! Did three essays all semester and 3 pop quizzes. Very understanding, would take him again!
Professor Gough cares about the subject and constructs lectures as best he can given the short parameter of class time that he has. A handful of essays with pretty straight forward prompts and weekly discussion posts or zoom discussions.
Jumped into this class blind not knowing what to expect and I don't regret it, this is my most favorite class because it felt like a break from major-related stuff. Basically, you watch old movies and listen to him talk about history, read the articles he links, some pgs of the textbook, & write 3 papers and you're golden. Very therapeutic, easy A.
Such a great professor! Very understanding and although attendance is mandatory, it doesn't feel like a chore to get to his class. Consists of reading here and there, writing 3 essays, and done! 10/10 would recommend :)
A lot of busy work like discussion questions every week but it was easy. 3 multiple choice exams with 3 paper exams, a book review paper, and an oral history paper. Sounds like a lot but he gives a lot of time and does not grade harshly at all so just put in some effort and you'll be fine. Attendance was mandatory ;-;
Professor Gough has created a really interesting class. His lectures were always fun, but he isn't the most tech-savvy, so he doesn't really use slides. The textbook was amazing too. The lecture was in person but the tests were online, and the final presentation was optional.
I took 17B and his course contained 3 exams which he simply goes over and gives you a study sheet it's all multiple choice each exam is paired with an essay, pick your prompt is laidback and he just likes to talk and get a discussion going. You get pts every time you attend class but it's not super mandatory if you miss a few days, I got a 110%.
This course was really interesting and he always made it priority for interaction and in-class discussion. Textbook is mandatory, but he found a free version for us which was nice. Attendance became mandatory, but towards the end he became more lenient and it did not go towards grade. Only thing is he assigns 4 essays that require a min. of 3-5 pgs
Very chill professor! He actually cares about you passing the class, and would often allow extensions. He is also funny at times, and from what it looks like he loves teaching the subject. Would definitely recommend if you wanna take some history classes!
Very chill professor! He actually cares about you passing his class, and according to my experience, he would often allow extensions for assignments. He is funny at times, and he seems to love teaching this subject. Would totally recommend if you wanna take some history! (the rating below is also mine, i accidentally rated him twice)
Lectures are very informative and you can tell he cares about what he is discussing. Not too many assignments, and if you follow the directions you will get an easy A. Most of the time in class is just watching the films. Would definitely recommend.
I understand this professor is a kind man and many people may like him, but I found him and the class to be grating. His historical skills and philosophy are stuck in the 80s and 90s. It doesn't help that he apparently was given the class a few days before the semester started, which isn't his fault, but didn't do him any favors.
A chill class with a light workload. If you show up, watch/listen to the lectures and videos in class, and are capable of writing two basic essays by yourself (ie; without AI), you're pretty much guaranteed a good grade. There's supplementary material on canvas, but it's rarely essential to assignments. Cool dude.
Almost all of class will be spent watching the films for the exam papers. He made attendance no longer mandatory so the class is low maintenance since the only grades are occasional discussion posts + the exams which are spaced out (but the slightest hit will hurt hard). He's generous with the deadlines & will let you turn in a lot of stuff late
A very very nice professor, who very obviously cares about the topics he lectures on. Very easy class, often splits between showing clips from movies and lectures. Only assignments are essays and a few discussion questions, which he grades generously. Its obvious he cares about the class. If you enjoy movies, this is a great class to take.
Most perfect professor. Easy, understands we are college students and not kindergarteners. Would 100000000% recommend.
