For upper level classes he is great. He makes sure even the dumbest person understands before he moves on. So be sure to pay attention or you will get embarrassed by him.
At first he seems very weird and uncaring about students. Hang in there and ask him for help during the tests. He can be very helpful!
Strange man, hard to follow, he's a hippie left over that won't let the 60's go. he would probably be fun to get high with but is not good for a low level math teacher.

He's the worst teacher ever. Don't ask for help in class because he'll make fun of you and don't answer a question wrong because he will also make fun of you. You can't understand what he's saying and the class is terribly boring.

He is very diffrent but an intersting teacher. He seems unfriendly at first but during a test he will help you if you ask. He is also fun to listen to in class even if you get made fun of for getting the wrong answer.
What is this guy on? He almost always wears the ame shirt, and you can't understand a word he says. Often, he works out a problem and then starts over, making even less sense than before. Do not take if you are a sensitive person!
You should only take this class only if you have a good math background. If you're not good at Math don't take it. You have to teach yourself the material. His grading is easy. You have to come to class if you want to do well. His class is fun.

He is the worst professor i've had in four years at this school. He can't even do his own math problems and makes mistakes. You'll probably get a higher grade on your test than you should just because he can't add or subtract. Humiliates and embarrasses.

Prof. Harley is an interesting man. His class is definately difficult and he once sniffed Expo markers in class. He gets off task quite easily and you never come out of class having learned anything. Go to the math lab- that is your only hope.

Makes fun of students,randomly calls on you to answer questions, talks a lot about beer.Hard to read his writing but if you stick with it you will start to understand. He is funny and the tests aren't terribly hard. Tells you exactly what will be on tests
All I have to say is do NOT take this class. You will fail most test... it sucks. Not to mention that he is insane.
For calculus, it really not that hard. Tells you exactly what is going to be on them, doesn't throw any curveballs at you so he can get his bell curve. If you're good at math take this class easy A, if you suck at math go some where else
I loved this professor, the material isn't hard and as long as you come to class and pay attention you should do well. He keeps class interesting with personal anecdotes and quotes. If you have a question, ask. Don't take his teasing too seriously.
He is the funniest teacher I have ever had. His class is absolutely hilarious. He will definitely pick on you, but don't take it too seriously. His tests are easy and the material covered is also easy. Great teacher. However, he doesn't curve!
He's not easy to understand which makes it hard to learn the material. Even with with a tutor this class was hard! Avoid at all costs, you will fail a few tests and wehn you try to contact him to ask for help it's impossible.

very funny guy. Just practice the homework that he does not take up/grade, and you will make an A/B. Does not take attendance, and he does go over the homework. He assigns homework that you can check in the back of the book.

Good God. He yells and rants and raves...talks in other languages and poetry. He forgot that this is a math class. He curses you out and yells at you and calls you stupid. Good luck

The problem with this professor is that on tests you have to do things exactly how he tells you in class, but then he tells you several different things, so it's just a crap-shoot on the tests. And yes, all the rest of the comments here so far are true.

Dr harley is a little hard to understand, and he will make fun of you, but he knows the material and when you leave the class, you will know it too. people say that they won't pass, but i have yet to meet anyone that has taken his class that hasn't passed if they put some effort into it.
Dr. Harley is definately hard to understand and will bring you out in class and he is strange. At first you absolutely hate him but as the semester goes on he becomes more understanding and most everyone does better on the exams. He will help during office hours though.

I loved Dr.Harley. His classes were very fun and really made me think in a way that I had never thought before. He is freaking hilarious and totally rips on the university and everything. I have no idea why so many people are rating him badly. Everybody I knew loved him.
This is the funniest man you will ever come across! Doesnt take role doesnt care about anyone, talks crap about everything and is freakin halarious, he had me rolling in my chair everytine i went to class! This is the classic professor, crazy and funny! Dont hate on the man. Got a B in the class.

Harley's a really funny guy, but a horrible teacher. He's incoherent and gets off topic really easily. If you flunk the tests, you're screwed. Avoid him at all costs, but if you get stuck with him, I'm sorry. Just keep your mouth shut, pay attention, study a lot, and you should be ok.

Harley is an incredibly smart guy, if youre not a math person though, stay away from this class, he's so advanced that it's hard for him to teach such a low level math course...hard to understand at times, although he is a funny guy
Horrible math teacher for 111 level. Do not take him if you are bad at math. However, getting to know him will help you in the long run if you are stuck with him. Trust me...STAY AWAY!!!!

Very difficult to understand. Obviously a smart man, but he cannot seem to relate his knowledge in a way that is helpful. His grading is extremely harsh - very little partial credit that kills the test scores. If math is not your strong suit, find another teacher.
He is very crazy and very interesting. I can't wait to read his book when it comes out.

one of the worst teachers I had. Very confusing, talks about movies a lot and then when he realizes that talking about movies has put us behind he tries to ram three days of material into one day. Tests are poorly written and difficult. He will work with you at the end of the class though. I thought I was going to fail, up until the very end when I realized how wacky his overall curve is.

One of my favorite teachers. I hated him at first, because I didn't really understand his eccentricities, but once you understand those, he is hilarious. The course was pretty easy, but if you're that great in math, you might have some trouble.
Quite possibly will go down as being one of my very best teachers. Very hated by many students who are simply not ready for real world expectations. If you try, I believe it works in the end with this man.

I recommend this guy highly but only if you are capable of picking up on a few things by yourself. He is HILARIOUS...I wouldn't miss this class for the world. Just pick your spots, because he isn't afraid to cut you down in a heartbeat. Funny if you lay low, though.

anybody who is taking this class next semester: DROP IT!!! he said that anybody would be lucky to pass with a C for his spring 2006 semester because he is about to retire and he could care less - if youve already taken calculus in high school you should be fine, but otherwise get as far away from his section as you can

I'll have to give it to him. His wit is definately only for those who can understand it. However, everything else of his sucks. He is mad at the University and at the students and the world for all the things he can't control. He is sort of a revolutionary except his way of getting things accomplished doesn't work. Get over yourself Dr. Harley.
I loved the guy but hated the course. I transfered, but my math didn't & I still didn't do good in this class. His intellligence is astounding & I enjoy going to class just to hear his references to random knowledge. I stand in aww of the teacher but I wish I had done better in the course. I once went to him about my grade and he gave me 14 points.
Here is MY post. I just found my grade out tonight and stand in awe of it. Yes, this course was exceptionally hard and yes, he was hard to understand many times. But I did my best and it payed off with him. Hopefully many others did the same as well.

Dr. Harley is the type of professor that seems like a nut, but once you listen to him and actually take to heart what he teaches, you realize that he is really a brilliant man. He often gets off topic and throws in a lot of random trivia. Take the time to go into his office for help and it will do you a world of good.
What the Heck!!!!!! Man I was in that class for 1 day, and I thought I was going to go crazy from listing to him. Please somebody still tell me, What kind of ARC CARD is going to help me past one of his test. Ask him about that, he'll explain it to you and then tell you to go tell your Mama about a ARC Card. DON"T DO IT!!! SAVE YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE'S CRAZY!!! Came in on crutches, then puts them down and walks around fine. You can hardly understand him, and his writing is horrible. He starts talking about math then suddenly jumps to "so i went to see this movie and a girl had her cell phone open..." REDICULOUS!Will give him credit, it was probably the funniest hour of my life.

i took this class fall 05...and i thought it was terrible....he is so odd that class becomes a highlight of the day. i never made above 73 on a test but I dod go for extra help 6 or so times....ended up with an A. dont ask me how...he's an odd old man but there is a town in SC named after his family. definately recommend if you like taking risks
Dr. Harley was probably my favorite professor ever. His class was pretty tough but I always looked forward to it. You never know what's gonna happen in his class. On exam day we took roll for the first time ever, introduced ourselves, and sang the National Anthem, and Dear Mama by Tupac. Best time in a class I've ever had.
Dr. Harley is one of my best memories from college. Yes, he's eccentric. Yes, he's tough. And yes, he's downright nuts! But that's why I loved him as a professor! He taught me no matter what people perceive you to be, be who you are & you can still succeed even if you're offbeat. Best professor ever!!! Literally changed my life!!!
Dr. Harley was definitely my most memorable Professor at USC. He wore a Vietnam-era vest where he kept chalk sticks instead of bullets. I had his Linear Algebra class. Probably more valuable than any class I have ever taken (MSME).
