Had him for lab only. He isn't the best explainer so I wouldn't take him for lecture because chemistry is hard for certain people. Lab was pretty much show up and pass type of thing. Everyone in lab had an A and he grades very lenient on the lab practical. I know for such I failed it but somehow I got a B on it so he's definitely a easy grader.
Great Teacher! Easy class, If you read the material you will definitely get A in the class.
Mr. Hefner was a great professor. His lectures were long and was somewhat boring tho. The examples in class were just like the exam. In classes quizzes were a reflection of what was taught and they were great examples for studying for exams. I would definitely take him again.
Not a chem major, but I am pursuing a degree in the sciences. That being said this class was not a cake-walk. The book was a valuable resource when I needed clarification on a topic. Lecture was boring (but I think all lectures are). Lab is where this professor shines. I personally found him funny, but not everyone has the same sense of humor.
Everything you need to know for this class is either in the syllabus or the lectures (which he posts for students). This course is straightforward and understandable if you show up and work the example problems he gives you. He was very helpful when I visited his office hours and provided additional resources (videos) when I needed a boost.
Uses WebAssign. Mandatory attendance (school's policy). Tests are mix of previous quizzes, HW, and hard unique questions. Serious about lab safety (you will be booted if unprepared). Uses text, videos, handouts, demos, anecdotes. Has no patience for those bad at basic math (check prereqs). NO EX-CREDIT. NO CURVE. READ THE CLASS BLACKBOARD PAGE.
The math in the class is waaay too hard even if he does give you a sheet of all the formulas you need to use on the exams. You have to remember which formulas to use and what they mean which is sadistic. Don't skip class; he WON'T go over everything you missed one-on-one in his office.
Does NOT actually offer extra credit assignments. He's helpful but only goes so far for a subject like chemistry. Gives zeros if you miss and do not make up a lab. Uses webassign (yuk). Enforces significant figures in lab (double yuk). Does NOT allow shorts and sandals in lab during the summer which seems odd.
I think he takes off points for being a little late to class and lab. Definitely takes off points for forgetting your lab goggles. Also if you are real late to lab he will send you home and give you a zero for the lab. Don't take this guy if you have traffic or if its at 8am.
NO EXTRA CREDIT IN THIS CLASS! I missed a lab and was unable to make it up and he wouldn't give me the opportunity to do an extra credit assignment to make up the lost points.
Although the lecture is quite boring but Mr. Heffner provides lots of practice questions and his power point is pretty straightforward and informative. Homework on webassign with tutorials is also helpful. Tests are not that hard. And Mr. Heffner is wonderful in labs. I like him!
Doesn't matter who teaches it: You have to give a presentation in this class! This class is nothing like CHM151 because the amount of math is in-flipping-sane! If you do not need this class, DO NOT TAKE IT! Other wise he is somewhat amusing and always sticks to the schedule in the syllabus (read the syllabus). Uses WebAssign which is not a plus.
This class was ROUGH! Between in the insane amount of equations we have to use, the group project, and the lab write-ups on WebAssign, it was a wonder I passed. Warning: If you don't like WebAssign or a lot of lab calculations, don't take this class, EVER!
Nice enough guy, I suppose. He lets you use any edition of the textbook they list. I never opened mine. The lab practical was totally awful, and worth 5% of the grade. Don't take this class if you don't like WebAssign. Both my chem instructors used WebAssign and I think they all do.
Nice teacher but don't be late for class; he doesn't like that. The amount of work required for the lab seems a bit extreme. There is NO extra credit available if you need a boost at the end of the semester. It is nice that he lets you buy older versions of the textbook to save money. But the $40 for WebAssign is a pain.
Never gave us study guides for exams. Said the lectures, PowerPoint, homework, Blackboard videos, and lab workshops should suffice. I would have preferred a precise list of what to expect rather than the vague notion of "you need to understand the material." Could be social anxiety or ASD, but he could be very demeaning sometimes.
Can get a bit testy at times and needs to work on his lecture voice, but he's a really nice guy as long as you don't test his patience with basic math. He puts a study guide for each chapter at the end of each chapter PowerPoint which turned out to list exactly what I needed to know on the exams (just not exactly what questions were on the exams).
Best chemistry teacher ever! Helps you at every step. Lots of office hours. Provides additional resources.
OK class. Instructor offers lots of resources and office hours, just don't fall behind because this course moves at a dizzying pace. Follow his advice and plan your semester when you get the syllabus (which you should read).
Great prof! Would take him again if I didn't already pass with flying colors due to his help.
One of the worst teachers at Wake Tech. Whenever you ask a question, he makes you feel intimidated for asking that question. He is very dry when spoken to especially if you are asking him a simple question. I once got laughed at when I asked him a simple question. If you want to take this professor, do so at your own risk. Beware of this teacher!
Chemistry was a real intimidating subject. This guy makes made the material accessible and interesting. He was always very open to students' questions. He did tend to stumble over some of his lectures, but in general the class was a lot of fun. Outside of class he answered a lot of my off-topic question about the industry and day-to-day chem.
Mr. Heffner is a nice and funny guy. However, he can really be a smartass and sometimes he doesn't explain things well. He is also not always helpful when you ask a question but he is better than many professors.
Not the most diplomatic prof. I was close to a C and asked him if there was anything I could do to improve my grade and he said "Sure. Build a time machine."
I was actually there for the "Time Machine" convo. In Mr. Heffner's defense the student he said that to did absolutely zero work in the class and didn't deserve a D let alone a C. This prof is a solid choice if you want clear concise course reqs. And he actually answers questions rather than say "figure it out yourself" or "look it up."
If you go to his office hours asking him to explain everything he just covered in lecture, don't tell him it's because you fell asleep in class. He won't help you.
Great choice for chem. He gives u the table of constants + some bonus points on the tests. Tests are very straightforeward. He doesn't always explain things very well but he tries. He doesn't curve the grade but he does drop a few things. Use his Ppoints, textbook, + Webassign HW, + you'll pass. Lab HW can be time-consuming so don't delay.
Unless you feel like you have a good understanding of chemistry and will do well in this class, this is not the professor for you. He mostly read off of powerpoints(even example problems were read out loud); I am the type of student that need to see problems worked out step-by-step. Very smart guy, but often left me and other students very confused
Had him when I retook the class. Lays out all the topics at the beginning and end of each chapter. Goes over each type of problem step-wise and in detail during lecture as well as during review days. Gave me feedback on what I had done wrong so I wouldn't fall behind. Read the example problems out load so the illiterate students could follow along
Holy cow this was a hard class, but that was expected since it was chem 2. This prof gives you sooo much help that you cannot fail as long as you know you have to work hard to understand the stuff and practice the problems. Beware that the department requires a presentation for this class (not just this prof).
Heffner is ok but he doesnt seem to know how to explain a lesson.. his pp slides seems so hard to understand in class because of the way he talks about it but when I get home everything is so easy. Hes a decent teacher but I wouldnt take him again because of the confusion. Also his tests are short and easy If you know your stuff.
Very difficult class. Overall I did well on everything until it came time for the tests. His tests were the worst. He gives no partial credit. The only extra credit opportunities given are extra credit questions on the test but even those are left off occasionally. He does care about his students though and worked with me when I had surgery.
The tests are hard. The average on all of the test went down significantly, everyone averaged about a 60. He lectures with examples off powerpoint and does few equations on the board. Lab was long but got out early if you did the lab correctly. Pick a good partner and you'll be fine. Homework and lab data was online, not bad with the help buttons.
The class not that difficult, but he made it so. no teaching just reading over the powerpoint slides. if you are not good at Chemistry do not take him. he teaches absolutely nothing. you are on your own. yet he is a very polite and nice as a person.
He is about the only professor here that will let you make up a missed exam (within reason of course); the rest will just give you a zero and make it your dropped exam. I swear he will bend over backwards to help students in an emergency. Just don't take his class if you fall asleep in class easily..
Does not offer extra credit (even if you are failing or borderline), BUT THEN NEITHER DOES ANYONE ELSE IN THE ENTIRE DEPARTMENT. But there are bonus questions on the exams (which is a curve of sorts), bonus points for completing the homework ahead of time, and bonus for participation. Getting an A requires work, a B is easy, fall asleep: get a C.
Want to pass and understand chemistry, then don't take his class. He grades to fail people and gives no partial credit for anything. Even though this is an intro class and many people take chemistry as part of the General Education, he teaches this class likes it is everyone's major class and should know everything when you get to his class.
Not the most compassionate professors I've had. I once witnessed him briefly forget the word for "human." Don't get on his bad side by being an idiot; read the directions before asking him dumb questions..
Prof. Heffner one of the best Chemistry teacher at wake tech. I was worried at the beginning of the course because of some rates here, but the reality was different. He such a smart and intelligent guy. I highly recommend him.
Professor Heffner is like a nerdy teddy bear. I really enjoyed CHM 151 with him and would highly recommend taking his class to any student. He can go fast in the lectures, but the use of his poll questions in class and the WebAssign homework really solidifies the material. He provides extra credit opportunities on every test, and the tests are easy
He is extremely helpful. He makes the material easy to understand. There is a lot of computer work so stay ahead. I highly recommend him
He gave a lot of homework, but that ended up saving me since I bombed almost every test. But he grades pretty nicely and gave partial credit on tests.
I was excited to learn about chemistry, but honestly this professor made it difficult to attend his lectures. A majority of the class would fall asleep during lecture due to his monotone voice. He once opened up lab for students who had questions and I went just for him to answer my question with a question. Never again.
DO NOT take this class if you're a person who likes to ask questions for clarification. He simply does not know how to answer them and makes you feel really stupid when you ask for clarification. Its not fun, and I don't know why he thinks criticism is a good method of teaching.
I really liked this guy. I think people get turned off because they want "warm and cuddly" but he is too awkward for that. He is really helpful if you ask the right questions. He wont let you get away with just asking for "help" or "what's the answer." He wants to understand where YOU are having trouble, so he asks YOU questions..
He can't control his class. He keeps waisting time trying answering inane questions from one student rather than move on and explain the things we'll be testing on..
DO NOT TAKE this professor! His instruction if and when he chooses to give it will leave you gasping for air. Help you will not get, just judgemental unapproachable attitude, no follow through, no text book at all, and very little direction, not really sure how he is still teaching. You are responsible for all dates even if not mentioned, PITS!
. Presents clear objectives and expectations for each module. Very flexible when it comes to missed exams and emergencies. Don't be fooled, not an easy A. Expects everyone to understand chemistry as if they are majors. Very accessible when I needed help, but would not just answer my questions without getting to the source of my mistakes.
I think he may have gotten tougher since his early days, people mention extra credit which was definitely not a thing this semester. He grades harshly and the course is very test heavy. In his current form, stay away unless you are a masochist. 3/5 because the instructional videos he posts are well-made and informative.
His lectures are funny and simple to understand, and he gives you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Do the practice problems & stay on top of homework, and it's not that bad. Somewhat picky about stuff like sigfigs on the labs, but he's passionate about what he teaches which makes the class more enjoyable..
Professor heffner is far best chemistry teacher, i hated chemistry and I was worst in it, but he explained it in a very easy way. Although he speaks and writes very fast but if you have questions he will take good care of it and make sure that u understand it. It was an online class.
I drove 45 minutes to main campus just to take him. It was worth it. He is monotone, but is good at explaining things. Gives study guides for each test, and practice problems before each test. Labs are pretty straight forward. No lab practical. There are webassigns but they are not overbearing. He doesn't believe in busy work. Taking again.
Loved taking his class! He is very organized and well prepared. He is very good at dumbing down difficult chemistry concepts down. It is chemistry so no matter what its a hard class. But he gives you amazing notes to study and lots of outside resources. I studied the notes and got an A without opening the book.
He is very passionate about chemistry and really knows his stuff. His lectures are information-heavy but very helpful. Pay attention and ask questions. He has high expectations for labs so make sure you stay on top of your work and ask questions at office hours.
Chem 152 is a math heavy course and he wastes no time quickly moving through material. It's easy to fall behind, however, he is more than willing to go into detail if asked. Lots of dry humor chemistry jokes. He is someone you want to have as a professor.
I had Prof Heffner for the summer class. He is an excellent teacher and I wish I could take him for all of my chemistry classes. If you know how to do the worksheets he gives you then you'll do well on the tests. He works plenty of examples during class.
I took his class over the summer. Hybrid. His videos are all you need. They were very easy to understand and organized. If you put effort into this class you will receive a good grade. Very helpful professor. Take him!!!
There are five exams (including the final), which basically determine your grade. If you get stuck on a material, don't count on him to explain what you did wrong. He is extremely vague with his feedback. However, he does respond to emails fast (within an hour). And he provides a ton of resources to guide you through the material.
I had a B+ for the entire class but bombed the final so I got a 70, it's weighted a lot so beware of that. He does respond fast but is very vague as to not give you the answers, and after a while he won't respond to make you do it yourself. I taught myself a lot since mine was online for lectures but in person for labs. Not bad but not great.
Mr. Heffner has realistic expectation for the amount of work and the difficulty of work that he assigns and so long as you study and keep up with the work it will not be overbearing. The lectures themselves tend to be rather cold however all the material covered in them will be on the homework and quizzes, no more no less.
Does good explanations and has clear answers to questions, but is extremely lecture based.
Doesn't teach, just reads off an antiquated PowerPoint. If you ask questions he'll tell you "it's on the syllabus" or give you vague answers. NO EXTRA CREDIT, NO grade curve or exam replacement. Isn't interested in helping students. 5 tests with final, no flashcard allowed on tests. If you're good at chem & can keep up the pace you should do fine.
If you ask questions he'll work through the process with you so you learn how to solve it. Used to offer extra credit but no more. Does not replace an exam score but does allow makeup for missed exam. Drops homework, lab and quiz scores. Five exams and a final. Provides ALL equations and constants for exams so you don't have to memorize anything..
Prof Heffner is an amazing professor. Wake Tech has good professors, but he is by far the most prepared and clear. His teaching style is easy to follow. He often starts with the big picture which is very helpful to me. He is respectful to his students and requires it in return
Excellent instructor. Very lecture-heavy, but they are usually interesting and easy to follow. The units do not build on each other much, so if you get lost in the material, it's not a huge deal. Grades tests forgivingly. If you do the assignments, you'll get an A. Highly recommend.
Where do I even begin. I came to this class that maybe I would like chem but hey I was so wrong! This class all it gave me was one hour and 15 mins of a snooze fest. It made me wanna go to bed. The way the tests are graded is horrifying. 5 points for every question on the test (Math & ex: name this compound) its very unfair. if u see the name. run.
Prof is amazing! Chemistry is hard and if you're not good in math you're going to have to work harder. This class is lots and lots of math. However he explains things clear and will always rework problems to make sure everyone understands. There is A LOT of homework and extra credit but show up, do the work and you'll do just fine..
.Not the easiest A ive got but not the hardest. The homework and the extra credit boost were vital. Four exams and a final and NONE of them are dropped. 75 min to take exams and 2 hour final. Doesn't grade participation or attendance.
This is NOT an exciting course not like high school. You dont really learn chemistry just a bunch of math. Dont take if you dont like math or arent already interested in chem. Take biology because it is more relavent. Exams are worth half the course. But the extra credit can boost a whole half a letter grade!
Third time taking this course and he was the ONLY prof who gave extra credit. Saved my grade! Unlimited extensions on homework. Labs were a pain sooo many calculations! BEWARE that fourth exam it is a KILLER. Takes attendance but I never saw it part of the grade..
hilarious he sends all his email replies at 4:20, him course vibe good. he got all my Metalica jokes and didn't mind I was late a few times
.Best professor, easy A. Was really helpful in his office hours. Pretty chill in lecture. The extra credit was rough but really helped.
This class is very easy to get a good grade in if you show up to lecture and lab. Some of the units are tougher than others but as long as you're completing the homework, online quizzes, and lab reports you should be able to get a B in the course. He is good lecturer and always willing to help.
Not going to lie class is pretty easy if you study for it. But him as a teacher is a terrible choice he's not kind, he doesn't give any exceptions to anything even if its a simple mistake. VERYYY HARD to talk to. The class is easy regardless of the teacher but If you have another choice choose that 1000% if not its not the end of the world u got it
really easy course, prof is good at conveying concepts and offers a lot of extra credit that is easy to acquire.
.Great professor! lectures are heavy but helped me a lot in his office hours. Lots of extra credit!
I was really struggling in the class but prof Heffner really helped me out. I really wanted to drop a test when I was too sick to take it but he let me take a makeup instead when I got better. Office hours and the tutoring center can save you.
Took mr heffner for both 151 and 152 and he is the best prof I ever had. His tests are easy for a chem class. He has clear test expectations and is real open to questions. He is also hilarious. For exams he lists all the topics and calculations that will be covered. Lost of bonus questions on the exams and extra credit quizzes..
Prof. Heffner is genuinely a very fun teacher! Don't be afraid to ask questions and definitely ask often if you feel even slightly confused. Chem is a difficult subject but he explains it as clearly as possible. He also laughs easily which does make the atmosphere of the class feel welcoming. His handwriting can be a bit difficult to read though...
Prof Heffner is a great professor! He is really passionate about his class and his students. He genuinely wants you to succeed and gives you plenty of opportunity to receive extra credit. If you mess up in this class, it's your own fault. I would highly recommend him!
Beware the pop quizzes! If you dont get to class on time you will miss them. But gives lots of extra credit and exam bonus questions. Drops homework and lab scores to boost your grade! I asked to make up a missed exam but he said that would just be my dropped exam. Doesn't allow makeup labs and claims the school doesn't allow it..
By far the best Professor I have had! Hes very patient and always ready to help! Hes hilarious and very nice and makes orgo fun!
.Dr heffner is amazing! If you have the chance to take his course in-person do it! He provides amazing exam reviews and is available for help whenever needed. This was my first chemistry class and was super nervous. I'm so glad I had him as my teacher! I actually really enjoyed learning new/difficult concepts. No quizzes. Only weekly HW & 5 exams.
Prof. Heffner is passionate about chemistry, and that is evident in his lectures. General Chemistry I and II are power point heavy classes, but Organic Chemistry I is mostly him introducing and explaining concepts with a whiteboard. I have enjoyed every class I have taken with him, and I feel the content has always been well explained.
Overall Prof. Heffner wasn't that bad, but I definitely wouldn't say he was good. And in all fairness to him, part of the reason I didn't like his class was because of the abysmal lab software the class uses. Multiple times all of my lab data was deleted, despite the fact that I saved my work and double checked that I still had my work when done.
Prof. HEffner is genuinely a very fun teacher! Don't be afraid to ask questions and definitely ask often if you feel even slightly confused. Chem is a difficult subject but he explains it as clearly as possible. He also laughs easily which does make the atmosphere of the class feel welcoming. His handwriting can be a bit difficult to read though..
