Witty, opinionated, challenging, and politically minded early brit lit prof.
Pompous. Petty. An Ideologue. Intolerant of those who disagree with him. Often arrives late and leaves early.
liberal, scholarly, and intelligent. lectures are subtly amusing-expect research papers and actual reading-pompous only in the fact that he won't tolerate stupidity or laziness-but he does have a sense of humor and is a friendly guy.
Tough course, expect to do long papers with many outside sources. Do the readings or you will be lost and left behind to drown in your own self pity.
arrogant; believes his views on shakespeare are definite rather then merely interpretative; unwilling to entertain opinions that differ from his own; does not see the point in encouraging playgoing even though the subject of his course was a PLAYWRIGHT
tough teacher
Absolutely brilliant, hard but worth it
One of those teachers that demands a lot and you hate him during the semester, but after the class is over, you realize how much you have learned. Yes witty, yes arrogant, YES opinionated, and definitely one of the SMARTEST profs at SDSU.

A lot of reading but easy if you actually read and attend class. Great guy though, isn't afraid to challenge students' opinions.
Dr. Herman made Milton interesting for me. I like his unorthodox perspective on the literature. He also has a subtle humor that makes the class fun. Herman is challenging, so be prepared to read and write papers.
The overall class was a waste of my time. He has two mid terms, a term paper, and a final. All are wghtd equaly, and the total points poss. in the class is under 100. His tests are of no more than 20 ques. so if you miss 1 you already are close to a B
very intelligent and knows his stuff. an easy B if you attend the lectures. his tests are very simple (straight from lectures).
This class is complete Bull ****. If you go to class you should be ok with a B, but going to class is the worst part. Dull lectures, terrible sense of humor, ridiculous tests, all in all, one of the worst professors I have ever had at STATE...
Very hard but straightforward in exams. Demands a lot but you will learn a lot. Quirky sense of humor but also one of the smartests profs I've had yet at SDSU. Highly recommend him - several classmates have taken him more than once by choice. I would
This course won't be easy, but at least you will come out of it having learned something. Prof. Herman seems gruff, but is very accessable and willing to listen. I too know voluntary repeat students.
Herman singles people out all the time and he is full of himself. I didn't like him as a person, but the class is pretty easy. I didn't read any of the books, but I still got a "B" because I went to every class. Go to class and you wont need
boring; slow; repetitive; useless topics; no in-depth discussion; only thing good is the passing of time
At first I hated Herman, especially after I got me first test back-the test was very vague and a lot of people did poorlyBUT it was his first attempt at a multiple choice test and the next was a lot better (still a little vague at times). He knows A LOT though and made me see Shakespeare in a new way
If you must take this class, pay close attention & take good notes. His tests are based only on HIS theories and very very little factual information from plays. Many people were quite upset because his test questions often offer multiple answers that could be arguably correct.
THIS CLASS WAS VERY INTERESTING....HE IS VERY FUNNY AND WILL MAKE ALMOST ANYONE LIKE SHAKESPEARE. HIS TESTS ARE PRETTY EASY, BUT THE ESSAYS WILL KILL YOUR GRADE. IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET AN A.
horrible.
His lectures were interesting, and I really did not want to take this class, but he made me appreciate Shakespeare. Tests based solely on lectures, so go to class. Overall it was pretty interesting. Also, you can get by without reading the plays, just check out the cliff notes to understand them.
Knows a lot about shakespeare and succeeds at turning his students on to his works. It's kinda lame his tests are multiple choice though cause there's a lot of different interpretations for shakespeare but overall good professor
Makes Shakespeare interesting. I, for one, came out of his class more interested in Shakespeare than I came into his class. He's definetly a good professor.
Never realized the multi-level brilliance of Shakespeare until this class. Dr. Herman has such passion and it translates. LOVED this class. Go to class and put serious effort into your paper...he expects students of English to write well. Go figure. And you do need to read the works.
Give the guy a break. If his tests are too easy, people complain, if the tests are difficult, complaints. It is Shakespeare people, it is not rocket science. Have some fun, you might learn something in between his jokes about Monty Python. Great Professor, very interesting.I got a B
His tests were very easy and discussions lively. as long as you read the text and stay focused during discussions inclass, youll do fine. easy B.
He was great. The class was fun and very interesting. I learned stuff I never expected to about Shakespeare's plays. His Monty Python jokes are pretty funny and I definitely recommend taking his class. There is one essay and easy tests if you take notes or even just pay attention in class. Take note
One of those I'm-going-to-prove-I-belong-at-Yale-even-though-I'm-at-State profs. This little man, this "facts man" will squash the love of literature out of you, and you will walk away dazed with a grade lower than you deserve and a disenchantment for the works he presents. You've been warned!
haha sounds like the guy from princess bride & he even said "inconceivable!" once.but yeah an easy teacher cause he gives good study guides that are just like his tests.one paper that your TA grades.kinda a little too into the whole cultural crisis thing but know the stuff like quotes he points out & its importance & you'll do fine..got an A!
A very brilliant man who has actually published and knows what he's talking about. Take him for Shakespeare also, actually teaches, unlike other professors who sit there and literally read from text.
Herman is a great teacher. He makes it so simple if you just pay attention! It's interesting stuff if you like english at all, and he's very informative about what he'll be testing on. He's witty and great and i loved the class! Read, use the study guides and enjoy

This professor is great. You can tell that he loves the material he lectures on, which in turn makes you more interested. I had no idea Beowulf had so many sexual undertones. I would definitely take this class. Be sure to participate. English class doesn't work unless you speak up.
best teacher i've ever had, very helpful and clear, loves the subject, makes it extremely interesting even if you're not that into english, sit up front (it's easier to follow and hear), great class
this class will let you appreciate SparkNotes to a whole new level. never went to lectures, still managed a B :)
He expects you to read numerous books, but it's an english class. so thats how it should be. Go to class and take good notes and you will do well in the exams. READ all the books. He requires only one 3pg paper that his TA grades. Easy A for paper. Reading exams are difficult. So don't skim or read book notes.
Prof. Herman is a difficult professor, but this was one of the most engaging classes I've ever taken. I never knew that John Milton could be so interesting and conversation-worthy. He's a very hard grader -- but know what you're talking about, stick with your thesis, you'll be fine. He wants to prepare you for grad. level work. Great teacher.
Great teacher when it comes to lecturing. The material actually makes more sense in his lectures than in the books. He makes it funny and very interesting, especially with some of the off- beat topics that he talks about. A huge Harry Potter fanatic! Overall, he's stubborn as a hell when it comes to changing the deadlines for when papers are due.
Although ENG 220 is not too interesting, Peter picks halfway interesting books, novels, etc. for you to read. Don't need to do all the reading. Make sure to come to class because he goes over main topics that he covers on the test.
herman is challenging. but you actually LEARN! he actually CARES about his students. he works really hard at his job. you can tell. i got an A. i had to bust my ass. but it was worth it.one of the most interesting classes ever. and that took me off guard. his lectures are down right entertaining.
Good teacher. Tests are hard, but just do the reading. He's passionate about what he does, and it makes such a difference.
very good teacher. tests are easy if you go to class. take herman!
He's a really good teacher, boring at times but he can be funny. There are 3 tests and 1 paper, they aren't too bad as long as you go to class and pay attention. A lot of reading, but most of the books aren't too bad. One of my favorite teachers so far.
Great prof!
3 tests and 1 paper. if you dont go to class you aren't going to get an A. his tests are based off of everything he says in class. you dont even need to read the books if you pay attention in class. however i fell asleep almost every class he is very boring at times beware. Tests are only 25 questions so its hard to get an A. but easy to get a B.
Good teacher. I recommend him.
Lectures are boring. He talks slow and a little too loud. But he tells you what you need to know for the test. Ok class
Not a horrible class. Need to go to lecture to get an A. Only based on 3 tests and a paper with a total of 100 points. You read a novel a week but if you take good notes you will do well on tests
Good class, boring teacher, go to lecture, its an easy A, o and do well on the paper
i thought this class was hard especially if your taking 15- 18units. He expexts you to read a book a week and some books are long. One was 520 pages. Tests are onl 25 points so its hard to get a good grade. He doesnt belive in curving. He also admits to teaching the class as an upper division to challenge us. Too much work for a GE class.
Professor Herman had some of the highest expectations of any teacher I've had. That being said, I've never learned more about an author and his works. My writing and analytical skills are the better for having taken a course with him. Yes, you'll work your ass off, but if you're not willing to in the first place, why are you in college?
Very good professor if you actually go to class. He wants you to read a book every week, some of them are really long. YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ A SINGLE BOOK IF YOU ACTUALLY ATTEND CLASS & TAKE NOTES. He discusses everything in lecture that will be on the midterms. First test was ridiculously easy. Tough grader on the paper though.
Herman teaches with conviction. He knows what he's talking about. You will work your little hiney off, but atleast he actually treats you like an adult. Do NOT miss class. Take crazy notes. The class is definitely a challenge, but I'd say it's worth it. He's an excellent professor. Sometimes a little rude, but he won't waste your time.
Very smart and sarcastic guy. It is a lot of reading but if you just take good notes you don't really have to read everything. He is a really good prof., he actually makes you think about the world from another perspective. I definetly reccommend him. Don't be late on the paper = automatic fail. I learned the hard way last semester.
Ok, this class is all about reading, so if you hate reading don't bother. YOU MUST READ THE BOOKS TO MAKE A GOOD GRADE! The books Professor Herman required were really interesting, and his tests are easy IF YOU READ! Don't let your phone go off in class, and don't be a tool & leave in the middle of class or he'll go off. 3 exams, and a paper.
herman and an arrogant ****. very innapropriate. thinks he's the****. you have to read each shakespeare play 3 times to get an A on the tests (literally, thats what he said) i just plain don't like this guy.
The class is kinda hard. He requires a play a week, 3 papers (last 1 could be a project), midterm & final. I didnt read ANY of the plays, just gradesaver.com & I got C-'s on the papers. But the project, I did a poor childrens book & got an A+. Just read summaries and TAKE GOOD NOTES!!! Tests are on the notes & what happened in the plays w/ quotes.
Treats students like children because he knows that everyone hates him and the class, except the few in the very front. "quiet down now children." Tests are hard and essays are graded randomly. He made hate English and Shakepeare because he just regurgitates the same thing.
Good prof.Jokes a lot, may have his favorites but will help you if you ask. 2*5 pages papers, 1 *10 pages research paper, 1 cfinal (gives u 10 essay questions and will pick 2 for the exam). 1 book per week. Some are long or not really interesting.didn't read them all : attend, take notes, put some time in your papers, prepare the Q and you'll do well
Listening to lectures is very helpful for tests. two papers and three tests. fairly easy class. read most of the books, but can get away with skipping a few and relying on sparknotes. humorous professor. very strict about cell phones. but overall a very good class
Very good class. 3 tests and 2 papers. Attendance is not mandatory but he tells you what will be on the test. Can get by with not reading every book but better if you do read them. Pretty entertaining but does not like disruption (cell phones, talking, etc..). He is understanding if you put in the time and effort. Loved going to class!
He is a very knowledgeable professor. Interesting class. Go to lectures because he tells the class what is going to be on the test. HIghly recommended. He is funny too.
Had Herman for Shakespeare- was one of the best classes ever! Go to class and take notes, that's it! I wasn't comfortable with the subject but now I feel like an expert. Seems that those who had a negative experience were the kids who sat in the back, never came prepared, and didn't give a damn. You get what you give with Herman-Highly recommend.
Very easy class as long as you go to lectures and take notes. I didn't really have time to read all of the books but still managed to do well. Only issue I had is that he expects everyone taking his class to hate English, and I am an English major so I actually like to learn the material. Don't sit in the back, he'll make you move forward anyways.
His tests are exactly what he talks about in class. His exact words from lecture are on the tests. Quotes in class are more than likely on the test. He wants people to read and participate. He will kick everyone who didn't read out. Sit in the front so he doesn't bug you. 3 tests, 1 paper. Use his words on the paper for at least a B, easy.
He expects you to read, but if enough people do you can get away with not reading. Sit in front so he doesn't put you on the spot. His tests are easy- mostly exactly what he mentions in class, but quotes you have to know from the books. He has 3 tests, 1 essay. He doesn't grade the essay-watch out for his TA Tim. Overall, OK class-it held my inter
3 really easy tests, 1 short essay. Take good notes or read the books.
Herman is arrogant. He does not care about his students, which is reflected through his constant belittling of anyone who has the confidence to ask a question. His exams are confusing, yet he refuses to clarify any questions. DO NOT take his course. He should not have a job at any institution more advanced than a preschool.
This class was pretty easy for me. I'm a science major so I didn't have time to read any of the books, and a did great on the exams. Just go to lecture and write down everything he says. The novels he assigned actually seemed really interesting and I will probably read them on my own time! Make sure to turn your cell phone off!
Herman pretends to review the books you were supposed to read, but he really just gives you his interpretation and expects you to agree with him. The tests are based off what he feels is important. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will need to get notes from someone else. One short essay is easy. Don't take this class!
Easy peesy lemon squeezy, especially for an upper division class. Read a book a week, 3 papers, and a final. I highly recommend Dr. Herman. :)
Awesome class!!! Professor is strict but fair. Easy syllabus to follow, but there is a lot of reading required (do the reading and understand his lecture and you'll do great).
prof herman is the type of prof that decided that NO ONE deserved an A on their first paper. so make sure to meet with your TA for papers since theres only 2 and they make up your grade alot. hermans tests are a little confusing but fairly easy if you take DETAILED NOTES and attend lecture. overall, a decent class with interesting literature.
Took his course back in the Spring of 2010; went to 85-90% of his lectures. Tests are based on lectures, so make sure to write detailed notes, as material will definitely be on tests. Not necessary to read books, he will tell you what you need to know in lectures. Best to simply focus and use notes to prepare for tests.
Peter Herman is a luminary in his field and an amazing writer. I'm lucky to have had a class led by such a wonderful professor. Take him. You won't regret it.
Dr. Herman's reading into Shakespeare was phenomenal. I learned a lot from his class. I would recommend other students to take this course. Make sure you take detailed notes, as you will need them in order to write the essays. If you can grow a beard, do so as this is good for your final grade. He likes the word "fascinating."
Prof. Herman is very passionate about Shakespeare and brings it every class. We read a new play each week, which was very demanding, but very rewarding in the end. You will get a lot out of this class if you read every week and show up to every class. His insight into the material can not be obtained from a book. It's really a FASCINATING class.
Mr. Herman is funny. He is a joker, but his assignments are very difficult. He is a hard grader.
Very nice professor but grades a bit too harshly. Attendance is mandatory and requires a blog entry based on the week's reading prior to class. Learned a lot from him but definitely spent countless hours reading in prep for class.
Professor Herman is a great professor who expects a lot from his students. He assigns a lot of reason but it's all for benefit. He requires much use of critical thinking from the reading and allows the students a lot of time to apply this in assignments and on blackboard.
Professor Herman is a very smart and a funny guy. The class was very interesting. There were about 11 or 12 books we had to read. I honestly didn't read half of them and still passed with a B. There is a midterm paper and a 15 page final paper worth 50% of the final grade with a choice of a project instead of paper. I definitely would recommend.
Professor Herman is a very intellectual person and is very sarcastic. You have about 10+ books to read (mostly plays), two papers, and either a 15 page research paper or creative project. His lectures are entertaining and requires deep thinking, as he goes into not only the text but historicalcultural aspects too. One of the best in British Lit!
This class was a lot of work for a GE. There were 10 books you needed to read throughout the semester. Each book needed to be completed within a week. iClicker questions for quizzes and tests. There were weekly assignments due. He was not helpful with questions and did not assist with assignments. Make friends with the TA, they will be more help.
Herman was awesome! He gave awesome lectures and made learning plays enjoyable. We had "mini blog-posts" every week which i enjoyed. Also the papers we did in this class were fun to write because we could write about anything pertaining to the plays we read. Would take another class with him.
Loved this professor. He really knows his stuff, gets a bit sidetracked but his rants are always fun. If you interact with him, you'll love him. If you sit in the back and don't really get involved you're not gonna have fun. Don't slack off in this class and you can make some interesting friends!
Pretty easy class overall. Every week you have to write a 250 word blog post which is annoying. Other than that, the class is made up of two essays (1500 words each) and a final project which can either be an essay or a creative work. The class itself is pretty interesting, although we spent the majority of it talking about Game of Thrones.
This professor is well-versed in 16th and 17th century drama. He tends to go on tangents, but they usually relate to the topic at hand. While the class and lectures themselves are good, just be wary of his attitude. He tends to overuse sarcasm, and I get the sense that he doesn't like the millennial generation.
You need to read the plays he assigns! He's easy to pass if you do, and if you participate in the discussion, he'll remember you that much better. I opted for the creative project over the research paper at the end. Good guy, funny, pay attention to his lectures. The hw is very easy if you read the plays. Don't be scared, he's friendly.
Good course to take to learn about terrorism in literature.
You have to figure him out. He runs the class his way & his way only. So long as you acclimate to his needs & write the paper he wants, you're in for a treat. He's intelligent. You can learn a lot from his lectures. Weekly blog posts, 2 essays, & creative project. Participate- get to know him. He'll boost your grade if you show effort & participate
He is in my top three professors ever. Hilarious, smart as hell, and invested in student success. I actually didnt like him at first (he seemed too pretentious and opinionated), but that quickly changed. Interesting classes taught with enthusiasm and care.
Overall, he is pretty enthusiastic about what he teaches! He's against any form of technology-cellphones, laptops, etc. Attendance was required because he had pop quizzes almost every week. As long as you show up and take notes, you should be good to go!
He's vocal. He's loud. He's proud, but sometimes too much. He doesn't ask answerable questions and expects you to know exactly what he's talking about when he does ask questions. I think sometimes he forgets he's read Milton a million times more than the students have. Luckily, his grading criteria is pretty solid. You'll pass, but it won't be fun.
No group discussion about each of the plays. It is mostly just sitting there and listening to him tell you HIS views and opinions on the plays and he will disagree with your interpretation. Homework and essays are easy enough tho. Finals are a choice of either a research paper or creative project.
Herman was great! His lectures were interesting and engaging. Most of the class is made up of discussion boards, and then one essay. It keeps the class engaged and lets you rack up easy points. It was a lot of reading, but everything was discussed in class lectures clearly. I feel like I really learned a lot in his class and would take again.
most INTOLERABLE PERSON i have ever had to put up with. If you interpret anything differently than him he won't bother to look at the evidence you have to back it up. It's what he says or nothing. Beyond his unreasonable grading criteria, his class is just boring. He barely looks at the themes, symbolism, history or anything beyond the plays plot.
Many of my classmates disliked him because of the way he presented his lectures. However, I thought he was hilarious and found his class entertaining. His classes are lecture heavy and it is a good idea to write your papers based off of what he says in his lectures. There was also the option of a group project or a research paper as the final.
He loves the sound of his own voice and rarely gives participation opportunities unless he asks a super-specific question that nobody knows the answer to and he gets frustrated when nobody responds. Pressures students into turning on their cameras and will talk over people when they finally do talk. If you like open discussions don't take him.
This was probably one of my least favorite classes. He is a VERY tough grader, and focuses his criticism on how your writing is presented, instead of the actual course content that you mmmm write about. He is very opinionated, and if you try to add in your own opinion into the discussion he will brush it off. He is too rude, and very pretentious.
you read a play weekly + discussion post, but majority of your grade is 2 essays and a final project. He grades light on the project and very heavy on the essays. His class was my only B for most of the semester because of essay 1, but ended with an A after I learned to write how he wanted. Take notes during lectures, write thesis's on what he says
If you just do the work, youre gonna pass the class. The blog posts are based on credit/no credit so just do them and dont miss any to ensure you get 100 for those. Essays were difficult; I didnt fail them but I also didnt get an A. Lectures are long. Final project was creative and just present something and show effort.
This class is an easy A if you show up, do the work, and are a somewhat decent writer. His class is very lecture heavy with him giving his opinion all class and very few chances for participation. He's anti-technology, so no laptops in class. His lectures are full of microaggressions against POC disguised as "jokes" that are very uncomfortable.
I was nervous the first week of his class after reading rate my professor but he is truly not that bad. As long as you show up and take good notes you will do great in his class. He usually has quizzes in the beginning of his class but they are not at all challenging. I actually learned something in this class and he is a very understanding guy.
The class consist of weekly discussion boards, 2 essays, and a creative project. The class is very straightforward and he says attendance is mandatory, but towards the end he stops taking attendance. I would definitely take other class with him because he doesnt make his class complicated. I have no negative comments about professor Herman.
This man will barely give you an essay prompt and then dock you points for not writing about what he wants you to. Dude, you never told us WHAT to write! He cracks a lot of unfunny jokes and is condescending to a fault. He's not sympathetic and going to his class first thing in the morning tested me more than the SATs. Don't take unless you gotta.
Every negative thing said about the professor is true but it is bearable. A lot of people's reviews acted as if he was the plague itself, trust, if you need to take this class its pretty straightforward and manageable. His class consisted of weekly blogs(Do Them!) two essays(graded tough so pay attention to what he says) and a creative project(Ez)
Lecture heavy. Compared to other classes there's less reading you actually have to do, but you'll get more out of the course if you choose to stay up to date with them. Essays are graded tougher but they don't ruin your grade if you keep up with the short blogs. Kind of awkward/blunt, still he is nice and approachable, accessible outside of class.
I honestly liked him. Make sure to read the books and take detailed notes in class because that is what he grades on. You have to go to class in order to pass and if you write the essays based on the notes from class, you'll get a good grade. He's doesn't trick you on quizzes and likes participation
Professor Herman's class is straightforward. Do not miss any of the weekly blogs! The two essays should reference points made during lectures for a good grade. I must warn you that Professor Herman's lectures can be dull, and his humor is severely outdated (as well as some of his opinions), so be prepared for that going into this course.
1.) Serves yappachino every class period 2.) Insufferable lectures with minimal insight into the text, pollinated with severely unfunny jokes and the use of unnecessary profanity. 3.) His voice could be used to engineer an app to cure insomnia 4.) Does not welcome interpretation but would rather discuss his own opinions on the text being read
This is the one class you cant skip. I take notes the whole time about everything he's saying and it helps big time with the essay and discussion boards. If you skip more than a couple times he'll call you out in front of the whole class. He's a little intimidating but kinda derpy with the jokes lmao. hes giving harsh dad energy but I'd retake.
Prof H. is a little scary at first but I've grown to love him. I just keep my head down and take notes the whole time and it's one of my chiller classes. Just talks about the books the whole time and stops taking attendance after like 2 months. No group work or any participation really-which I like lmao. Im taking him next sem :) just do all the hw
I was doing good in the class for awhile, fast forward to the final essay, I worked really hard on it and put in everything HE talked about in the lecture. He gives me a D on the paper and says its barely acceptable. I'm obviously so confused. He wants us to write a certain way but never explained how and it made it difficult for anyone to do well.
The grading criteria was not as clear to me. I would recommend office hours-- and that was my mistake-- but I felt especially discouraged when my writing was seen as poor and not followed through, when I worked so hard to make it align with lectures. Not all professors and lecture environments will work for everyone, and that's totally okay!
Professor Herman was a wonderful Shakespeare instructor. He clearly cares a lot about the material and explains the plays in a way that is easy for students to understand and get into. Don't let his syllabus scare you off! He doesn't grade too harshly and is lenient with his attendance policy.
Prof Herman covered some potentially controversial topics without bias. He's very much in the "old school" teaching camp where the teacher talks and everyone just listens. Prof Herman is not overtly rude, but he has a passive-aggressive sense of humor that doesn't always land. I recommend taking notes, attendance is impt.
Professor Herman's class is fairly straightforward - just stay on top of the weekly blogs and essays. Though his lectures can be dull, engaging with the material and using resources like ChatGPT and unstuck AI for study prep can really help. Overall, a manageable course if you put in the work.
I never had any issues with his grading but others have said if you dont agree w what he says he'll dock you. Says attendance is mandatory and you can only miss 3 but he doesnt take attendance every day so you can fudge a little. Grade is based off discussion posts, essays, and final project but posts arent graded by substance just completion.
I've taken 4 classes with him and he gets nicer every semester lol. Do the discussion boards and you'll get an A,there's3 or4 papers, and one creative project. I went through a really bad family tragedy at the end of the semester, and prof h. was so kind and let me finish the class early and keep my A. Some ppl don't like him but he's super chill.
Easy class to pass if you keep up with the blogs and readings. The blogs are graded on completion and not on substance, and are pretty free for all. Two exams, one skit video at the end as a final. Okay professor, his lectures drag a bit, but he's not too bad.
pros: attendance isn't completely mandatory final project is super easy pretty funny and understanding cons: no office hours highly recommend making a friend in this class! attendance isnt mandatory but if you miss class its hard to catch up
