Useless class. Waste of time and money. Just read the newspaper, you'll learn just as much. That is all he talks about anyway. The text will just depress you.
I had him for political sustainability. I must admit, he does tend to wounder a bit during lectures. If you pay attention, however, he provides you with a very complete picture of the modern environmental movement and its challenges.
Biased, plays favorites (received a C because I did not arbitraily "participate enough", first C in Major. Im a senior), very unorganized, does not know how to lead classroom discussions. Quite frankly, the worst teacher and class I have attende
He gives you a lot if info, but it is very unorganized and your not entirely sure what to focus on for tests. Even though most of my other Poli Sci classes were much harder at least I left feeling like I gained something, not so with this class.
Easy work, but a lot of it. Quizzes were easy, as was the writing. Just make sure you don't forget about the deadlines, which aren't always clear (online course).
Horrible prof. Mandated a NYT paper subscription, very liberal and biased. Not a good speaker. Not fair in giving different sides of the story. Don't take him.
Really great class. Though it is true that he can get sidetracked he is an awesome professor who is always willing to help you out. Yes, you actually have to do work in his class but it is fun and interesting at the same time.
Jacques isn't an easy teacher, be prepared to write and think, but he is always in his office and returns emails and calls promply. I got an A in this class and will take him again.
Great teacher. Very knowledgeable, he does assign a full work load but its good material. Anyone who has an opinion about stuff that matters would enjoy this class.
A really great teacher if you're willing to learn and do the work- but isn't that what college should be? He's not unreasonable, and you'll learn something meaningful and enrich yourself if you take his classes. I've had him for multiple classes and enjoyed them, in part because they were challenging and made you think rather than regurgitate info.
Great teacher! His lectures are informative and interesting, and he is obviously very knowledgeable about environmental issues. You need to do the reading to fully understand the lectures (otherwise there is a lot of awkward silence!), but if you want to you can really learn a lot.
He gives quizzes throughout the semester and it's based off the reading. If you do the book reports, the field report, do well on the midterm and the final you'll do pretty decent. Take notes and don't miss class or you'll miss the quzzes. attendance isn't mandatory. the midterm and the final are easy if you read. he goes off on tangents A LOT.
Took env pol online and got a B. He makes you do a service learning project but doesnt make you prove you volunteered 20 hours, its all on the "honesty policy". The online quizzes are 5 questions each and are passable. 20% of your grade is just posting your opinion on the online discussion boards. He grades the 2 book reports pretty harshly though.
I BARELY LEARNED ANYTHING. You only have one test during the wholeee entire semester and the rest are pop quizes. You have to read a 300 page novel and do a book review. The final is a research paper which only the bibliography is worth 20% of ur grade He goes off tangents a lot! AND HE IS VERY BOREN. I would have rather learn the subject on my own
Interesting subject...boring teaching method. Seems scared a bit in front of class and goes off on tangents. Also his assignments werent to helpful for the material (Parable of the Sower).
Kind of a love/hate thing w/Dr. Jacques. He's the kind of guy you'd love to talk to over a beer, he's knowledgable & passionate, but as a Prof, he's very disorganized (updated his syllabus 3Xs!), my main complaint is that for an environmental Prof instead of using email, he required all assignmnts to be couriered to him from all the campuses!
I have had Dr. Jacques for 2 classes (PUP 4204 and INR 4350), and I think he's a great professor. Intelligent, passionate, encourages scholarly research. I haven't noticed these "tangents." Yes, he's tough, but school isn't meant to be easy. I've gotten A's both times. I'll be taking more of his classes for sure! I have learned a lot from him.
Took environmental policy with him and found it fun and challenging. There are 2 major assignments, and a few tests, but nothing major. He's good natured and if you just keep up with the readings you should earn a good grade and learn a lot too! Pretty easy on the eye as well.
I love his class! I have great grades, but he isn't easy if you don't keep up with reading assignments (one for every class) and don't put in a lot of effort in writing. His "tangents" are related to the subject and usually helpful. He's VERY helpful if you have research questions.
Worst professor in all of my time at college. He's knowledgeable, but very disorganized. You can use notes for quizzes and class participation, but I found it difficult to take notes. Quizzes are unfair- he isolates a tiny piece of info for you to answer that he never went over in class. Plus he's a bit condescending at times.
Very interesting lectures. Professor gives an objective view of environmental politics. He presents view points of both sides of sustainability issues so overall class is very balanced. Quizzes are a bit hard, must read material and take good notes to get good grade. Class is manageable as long as you put in consistent effort.
This class takes a steady effort to make good grades. Several long assignments that were graded somewhat easily. Just be prepared to put in effort.
Filled in for Prof. Bradford, and few can beat that guy. That being said, he's OK. His lectures are a bit all over. But everything he said was in the book(s), so you could just take notes from that. A handful of quizzes and two tests, but he came in a week late so understandable. Take him if you're a good self-learner.
Took this course online as an elective. I submitted my rough draft by mistake which did not include footnotes. Before consulting me Prof Jacques filed an ethics complaint accusing my of plagarism. No one could help me and even though everyone was sympathetic. I am so angry about the whole experience i am consulting a lawyer.
Boring. Disorganized. Can't control classroom discussions. Talks down to other students, this didn't happen to me but it made me uncomfortable to see others try to deal with it. Very bias lectures and doesn't seem to know his subject. Why am i paying him to tell me to read the paper. Don't take this class total waste of time and money!
coming into UCF as a junior from community college. this is my first real junior level big university class. This guy is easy! Attendence is important because he gives pop quizes, and group class work. Just write down what he puts on the board, because he doesnt write that much on the board. Service learning project sucks though. 2 book reports.
1 book report, 1 research project, class group work, and pop quizes. You have to be at every class because of the pop quizes. If he writes something down on the projecter write it down, because it will be on one of the quizes. The research paper is 50% of your grade, but he grades pretty easy.
do not listen to previous posts. teacher changed entire class structure. class consists of 5 quizes, 5 participation days(doesnt tell you which days) and a midterm and final. he is UNORGANIZED and teaches as if he is lecturing students who want to earn a PHD.He will RUIN your GPA.
Just as the poster below said, the entire course structure has changed. There is now 5 quizzes, 5 participation grades, a midterm, and a final. His lectures are disorganized and DEVOID of much of the information tested. When you ask a question, he will often just refer you to the text. Also: BEWARE. HE ASKS TRICK QUESTIONS ON THE TESTS.
this is one of the best professors that i've had, the class is easy just show up, he really works to make the students understand the material. I took global environmental politics with him. He's a good guy, and his class was one of my favorites and i'm walking away with so much more knowledge then then i showed up with.
It took forever for a space to open in this class. I was extremely excited about the subject but as the weeks went on I became more and more disappointed. Although the films are (for the most part) pretty interesting there is not a lot of actual discussion into analyzing the films. Easy A but sadly not an interesting course. Don't waste your time.
The book and the class itself are actually very interesting. However, the professor is completely unorganized and makes class periods mind-numbing. Grade is based on 3 exams (final one is cumulative!) so if you mess up on one, you're screwed. If someone else taught it, its a great class to take, but he is really not a good professor at all
Yes, this class can be really boring and slow. But it is interesting, to a point. There are several quizzes which are easy as long as you skim the chapter and pay attention to what he says in lecture. The midterm and final and easily managed with a little bit of studying as well. Not a bad class, just slow and at times, tedious.
I took two classes with him this semester and it was a LOT of work. there are a lot of readings and you have to study hard for the quizzes The lectures are hard to focus on but as long as you show up to class and do your participation points then he isnt too bad. I ended up with an A and a B, and I am taking him again next semester.
He has to be the WORST professor that I have ever had in the history of me going to college. I recommend to you anyone that is planning on taking his class to drop ASAP, b/c he is so unorganized and it seems like in a way he really doesn't know what he is doing. He should be teaching in my opinion.
This was the first class I took with Jacques, and it was by far the best class I have ever taken. He is very knowledgeable on the subject, and I'm walking away with so much more insight into the world from this class. The class can be demanding, but just do the readings on time, and you will walk out with an A and a new outlook on the world.
Took this class with enthusiasm but it ended to be a dissappoitment. It doesn't matter how many times you read the aricles, the quiz question are made not from the main points but rather from lines that you read and forget right away because they are not importnat. If you take this class, make sure you like to read,, ALOT
First time ever taking a class like this and I have to say, Prof. Jacques made the class interesting and I was able to take away a great amount of knowledge. There's a good amount of reading but the quizzes are easy and he gives a good outline of what he wants from the paper assignment. If you put in the work, you will do well.
One of the most knowledgeable teacher that I have had. You can gain a huge amount of knowledge from his class. However, this class takes a large amount of time in your schedule. The entire class is based on scientific journal articles of which you will be expected to read 4-6 per week (10-40 pages each). His grading makes writing papers difficult.
Very knowledgable on a lot of different topics but his speciality is in Marine Biology and he attempts to kinda scare everyone with ridiculous terms and mathematical formulas for evolution. Scientific articles if read properly take hours to ge trhough but if you just skim them you can get a decent grade. Grading is kinda random. Just kinda whatever
He has powerpoints that pretty much highlight the main points he wants you to know. You either have to go to class, or spend hours reading the articles. The tests are online and open note...so print all the articles prior to taking the test. There are four essays throughout the semester (1000-1200 words). He is highly intelligent, and he is nice!
Took online. Must read constantly, and pay very close to details. Tests are pretty hard, and focus on petty details from reading. Had to write many discussion posts and essays. Very hard on grading, requires a ton of references. Also had to do community service. Don't take unless required and work hard!
I had an anxiety attack after my first class with Dr. Jacques, but by the end of the semester, I have grown to really appreciate the challenge. He expects a lot, but you will grow as a student and as an analytic thinker. Having a passion for the subject is a plus. He is very helpful and knowledgable. Anyone who says he is a bad teacher is just lazy
Took Jacques online, but went to see him weekly for clarification because his assignments were confusing. He gave little help during his office hours and always seemed bothered by student coming to visit him with questions.. Although, he would spend time speaking about other noncourse related topics. I got a B and I worked my butt off. Not fun!
He expects a lot of writing. Took the class online. Watching the online lectures is a must otherwise you will have no idea what the articles are about. A chapter or two from the text a week + between 2 and 7 articles per week. Tests are pretty difficult and multiple choice.
Don't take this class if you aren't willing to work hard. I took it online and got an A but there is lots of reading and writing. As long as you work hard, you will be okay. There are weekly essays and four papers as well as assigned readings. The class itself is very informative and will open your mind to many aspects of sustainability.
I took sustainability over the short summer session. The amount of reading was just overwelming for me, and I found that without fully digesting each article you would not be able to pass the exam. Hundreds of pages of PDF files, in addition to the books assigned. Difficult grading, not advised unless topic of class is your lifes passion. :(
Took Jacques online, but went to see him weekly for clarification because his assignments were confusing. He gave little help during his office hours and always seemed bothered by student coming to visit him with questions.. Although, he would spend time speaking about other noncourse related topics. Not fun!
Was very unclear in what he wanted for written assignments and was even more unclear when I went to see him during office hours. If you read the textbooks and take notes, you can do well on the tests, but the essays are difficult to get a good grade on.
Would be a really cool and down to earth guy if he didn't take himself so seriously. Doesn't give you the LONG powerpoints which you are tested on, to overcompensate for being in a "fun film class," and moves thru them quickly so write fast. I find this spiteful and presumptuous of him but he's ok enough. Interesting material. Write good essays
I can understand the negative reviews that Jacques is getting here but honestly I have never learned more in a class. He is an amazing professor and his class requires you to work hard. The class is easier if you enjoy the material that is being taught and love learning about environmental topics. Weekly 500 word journals and four 1000 word essays.
I took Environmental Politics with Prof. Jacques this past semester. I can likewise understand why many may rate him low, however, I have truly never learned so much in a class and been required to elevate my thinking and writing skills. He is always willing to help if you truly need it. He expects students to care first and foremost.
Took Enviro Politics ONLINE, tests are difficult make sure you read all the readings he gives for modules at least twice, he picks out small details from them. He grades tough on essays. You have an essay a week. 1000 word essays due during test weeks so plan your time wisely. Had to work for a B. Hardest online enviro class I've taken.
Took Online for Env. Politics. If you don't cram the 3-4 readings into one day, it's easy. 500 word essay each week, 4 1000 words. If you do the reading, the tests aren't terribly difficult but you'll have to look things up. If you haven't noticed, READ READ READ. Other than that, very knowledgeable and helpful person that pushes you. Solid Teacher
If you are not willing show to to class and to read the assigned texts and resources he provides then what are you doing in college? I have taken Jacques for 5 classes and have no complaints. 5 quizzes, 5 random participation dates & an essay was my final. He is very knowledgeable, helpful & class is much smoother if you participate in discussion
I've had Jacques 3 times now, and each time, people either hate him or they love him. His assignments are difficult and his instructions are vague, but once you figure out what he is looking for then the class is a breeze. Also, there is no textbook but you are supposed to read several journal articles a week.
I took online. I was pretty nervous, as his reviews weren't stellar, but I found the class to be not bad at all. 8 peer review essays, 4 journal essays, 4 exams, 1 chance for extra cred. A LOT OF READING. If you don't read, you WILL NOT do well on the tests. If you do read, the tests will still be hard. Overall, I got an A, and I'd take him again.
He's very knowledgeable. A bit pretentious and obnoxious, and appears to hold a rather cynical view of students, however, considering these are mainly personality issues, it shouldn't affect your ability to pass the class. Just commit a copious amount of time reading and mentally digesting the material and you should do fine on the exams and essays
I took this as an online course. There is a large amount of work load involved, including 20 hours of community service. You cannot procrastinate in this class, even in the first week. It's a lot of information and a lot of work, but he is fair in grading papers and the tests are not too challenging.
This class is a "real" college class. It's a decent amount of reading, writing, and critical thinking. Slackers will complain he's a jerk or whatever but the fact is that he doesn't take excuses or BS. It's a fun class if you enjoy learning and working for your grade.
Heed my advice ( 4.0 and graduating) do not take this "professor". He is arrogant, rude, and unorganized. He holds students to standards that he cannot even attain. Every test had to be regarded due to his massive amounts of errors. As a Liberal, I now appreciate why people despise Liberals
Sustainability sounds like a fun course right? Wrong. If he can find a way to fail you he will and enjoy it very much. He will make things unclear and set you up for a word game. He ridiculed one of my friends so much she stopped showing up to lecture. Be prepared and do not expect a second chance.
Took AP environmental in HS and I LOVED it. However this guys is so confusing and very liberal. To the point where i just wrote my papers to what he wanted to hear. He makes you read sooo many pointless articles and never teaches. The class is set up so you read and then write essays. theres ZERO teacher-student relation. overall, 2/10
Prepare to read several journal articles a week and understand them because he will test you on VERY specific concepts. Exams are tough, so make sure you do all the informal essays for easy points and especially the formal essays! Don't expect to contact him by email, he is slow to respond. Don't take this as your first class with him.
A bit disorganized but brilliant and effective prof; you will work hard and learn a lot; provides extensive feedback on multiple written assignments; very responsive to questions; provides ample opportunity for extra credit; if you are unhappy with your grade, you have solely yourself to blame.
Brilliant professor, even though a bit disorganized. Exceptional scholar and cool pedagog. Provides extensive feedback on multiple written assignments. A lot of reading, writing and hard work, but learned a great deal. UCF needs more profs like Jacques.
Tests were online which was relieving because he asked specific questions on articles, this way you can control F. He is good at lecturing, just have to read a lot of articles (at least for the basic understanding) and 4 papers total
Prof. Jacques has taught me a great deal. I have grown as a student, a writer, and a critical thinker. I don't think people appreciate his sense of humor which is a shame!! You guys should feel lucky you to know him because he is brilliant and he knows a great deal about the world. If you guys don't want to be challenged then don't take him.
He is probably my least favorite professor I've ever taken. He is so unorganized, takes months to grade things and has a TA just so he doesn't have to answer emails. He is so confusing and sometimes just talks on and on about things that we're not even learning about. I think he's the only prof for IDS 3150 so good luck.
This dude is no joke. If you can keep up with the readings you will do fine otherwise good luck. Paper every week. 4 tests that are open note/book. Let me reiterate DUDE IS NO JOKE. No textbook, just journal articles (50-75 of them).
Dr. Jacques was the best professor I have taken at UCF. He is super intelligent and inspirational, but he also has a sense of humor. I have learned so much in this class and I was sad to see it end. I wish I could take all my classes with Dr. Jacques. Definitely take if you have the chance, all majors should experience this class.
Assigns a few hundred pages of reading per week, but doesn't talk about the subjects covered in class. Questions on tests may be from readings that were not assigned. More of a preacher than a professor. He sometimes states opinion as fact, even when it goes against empirical evidence. The class was not difficult, but extremely frustrating.
I had him for Foundations, and was dreading for this class to start. My fears were confirmed after the first test. His tests are online and crazy to predict. I hope you're good at googling test answers, because he has you read 10 papers for each test that are all 20+ pages long. It doesn't help that he grades papers with a superiority complex.
His TA might as well have taught the class, because she paid more attention and gave better grades than he did. The professor preaches his ideology more than teaches. Would not recommend him
Never have read so much in my life! Material hard to understand, but the help is there if needed. You have to read everything! Tests material is scattered around all readings. Control "F" does not work so you actually have to do some work. This is a real college class, get ready. Do not complain, just do it, you will feel accomplished after.
This professor is AWFUL! He doesn't teach, expects you to read an entire book with journal readings and his online notes in 1 WEEK! The worst professor I've ever had. He's also very rude when it comes to emailing him.
The worst professor I ever had to deal with. Gives zeros on essays due to outrageous things.
For an online class, there was just way too much work! There are 4 essays, 4 tests, as well as peer reviews that have to be done along with the essays. On top of that, in order to do well on the essays as well as the exams, you need to have read about 5-6 articles that are all 20-30 pages long. Too much work and too little time!!!
DONT TAKE HIM! He is unclear on what needs to be done for assignments. You will read 8+ articles(WHICH ARE 20-40 PAGES LONG.. EVERY WEEK!!!!!!) 6 week summer course, my fault, but apparently he believes you will make this class your whole life. 4 exams 4 essays (has some EC) but will give zeros for STUPID reasons. Stay away, stay far away !!
For an online class, its a very heavy workload. Four modules that consist of four essays and four exams. Each module includes 9-13 articles that should be read to gain clear understanding of the material for the essays. Doesn't grade or read rough drafts but will give you a zero on your final draft if your rough draft doesn't meet the requirements.
I took it online and you have to read about 10-20 articles for each of the 4 essays. You write a total of 4 rough drafts, 4 sets of 3 peer reviews for each essay, and 4 final drafts. Along with the essays, there are 4 exams. You need to really try because he is a tough grader and tests are hard.
I cant say he is a bad teacher because he doesn't teach anything.... I can say that he is rude, he genuinely believes he is the real life Indiana jones Don't bother emailing him about a grade error because is his way or the highway. Excessive amount of hw, the TA grades everything and applies the "rubric" according to his/her own interpretation
Tests are hard, even open book, averages for the class were about 70/100. Peer reviews are busy work, even though he says they are not. The reading is busy work too- all stuff you will forget and not care about. I took the online summer class, so beware of the concentrated workload. Service learning is required, 20 hours.
The class is a lot of work. Its a lot of reading and can be complicated, however everything is super interesting. You really learn the material given and he helps explains things if you dont understand.
Honestly, I thought environmental politics was supposed to be an enjoyable course, but instead this professor makes it a bad experience. He grades essays harsh and the tests are very in depth on the readings. I would never take this professor again.
Class is based off of 8 assignments that are not weighted, so if you have ONE bad day/don't get 100% on everything you're bound to have a bad grade. He grades incredibly tough considering every assignment's avg is a C. Final papers don't even have one student getting higher than a 90%. I'm a straight A student and will never take him again
I wish another professor taught this course at UCF. TOUGH GRADER and so much reading!! I never have time for anything and most of the readings are super boring. Lecture material/Lessons are super long as well.
Yeah he's chill. If you have to take an internship course, he's a solid choice. 10 weekly assignments and a paper due at the end of the semester. Really easy A as long as you keep on top of your work, and he offers some chances for extra credit as well. Clearly passionate about his field.
He literally doesn't teach anything and only provides lengthy lecture notes that are mostly used on tests but you won't learn a single thing from. He's obsessed with bragging about his "Online Class Award" but doesn't know how to organize his course, I highly recommend taking any other professor. ALSO! He requires you to do hands on volunteering!
I was really disappointed that this class about such an interesting subject is so dry. I'm getting a higher grade than average but honestly I haven't learned a single thing. It's very heavy on ideologies, odd for a PUP course instead of POT, so beware. I'm a double major and this is the worse course/instructor I've taken in either degree program.
If youre looking to get an A do not take professor Jacques. It has less to do with the difficulty of the class and more to do with the way he weighs his assignments. Probably the least engaging class Ive ever taken at UCF. Hes very hands off and students basically teach themselves all the material.
I must warn anybody in the future who takes a class with Professor Jacques. He is terrible at teaching, and everyone in the class is uninterested and tuned out while he lectures. The only silver lining in this class is that I'm taking it over a much harder course, otherwise, I would stay WELL away from this class and professor.
