“I don't know, Professor Jo seems like a good guy, and he's incredibly knowledgeable in terms of anatomy and physiology, but the fact that his tests, his test study guides, his lectures, and his powerpoints have little overlap in terms of what you actually need to know make the class even more difficult than the subject matter already is”

He is a very nice and smart professor. I absolutely loved him because he is very clear and knows a lot about the subject. In order to get an A, you have to listen to him carefully and not miss a single class.
This is a HARD class. I took it in the summer and its not easy. Professor Jo is a fast talker and its alot of information.
man.. he speaks way too fast.. and he doesn't use his textbook at all! His test comes out from the lecture and his explanation so if you don't attend to the class.. well sorry you will fail the class. Also, his ppt doesn't help you at all. So if you want to get A, then you should not miss any single word from his lecture.
Mixed feelings. Probably better to take this class any other time than summer-- just too much to cram into 6 weeks. His tests are tough, but you learn a lot. Like he says the first day of class: If you're looking for an easy A and not willing to put in the effort, he will recommend another teacher for you... no hard feelings.
He does not use the book assigned and uses ppt slides from a different book. His exams are based on his lecture and he speaks way too fast to get it all down and draw the connections he wants you to on the exams. As a result, confused and not recognizing material on the exams. The grade is based off exams ? i.e. not balanced. There are no paper
it is extremly hard to get an A.. i took him in summer and it was my first b ever!! even tho I tried my best it was impossible to get an A because he talks too fast in lecture and texts are little tricky..but the good thing is you will learn much from him tho..
run for ur life...do not take his class
Yes, Dr. Jo speaks fast, but he knows his stuff and how to TEACH!! He actively engages with effective techniques--"turn to your neighbor & talk it out", kinesthetic participation, and brings in PubMed abstracts to make it relevant. He is tough but one of the BEST teachers I've ever had. If you truly want to learn, take him.
Dr. Jo is a good teacher but also too demanding, considering the intangibles of the class (never uses a book, covers a lot in microscopic DETAIL, everything based on lecture etc,)My friends are taking a teacher who is easy and not good. Can we please have u move a lil more to the middle?I got an A in A&P 1 and barely passed this class.
You take him if u want to!.. i do very well in all my other classes..His class was so stressful (i was not able to retain much due to the high stress) Find a different instructor!
doesn't use the book and talks super fast..very smart guy, but he really needs to work around people's learning styles, it's his way or the highway (F)..i bought this expensive book and we don't even use it..his tests are hard as anything, but again he is very smart and funny..i am a good student and am almost worried about passing this class!
He's an awesome teacher, knows what he's talking about, and will help you if you ask for it. He does talk pretty fast, so use a laptop instead of handwriting notes just so you can keep up. And definitely follow his Study Tips for A&P. I thought I was going to get an A in this class, but the truth is you have to work REALLY REALLY hard for an A.
Dr. Jo is a great teacher. Uses real world experiences w/ his teachings and he does speak fast, I suggest using a recorder to review his lectures. Laptop works best from all his ppt slides. You really have to study hard to get a good grade. He does offer quizzes and some HW for extra points so do that, your grade will go up if you do so.
Dr. Jo is very knowledgeable and helpful. I was a little fearful about taking this class online, but had no choice because it did not fit my schedule. He answers questions in a timely and thorough manner. Awesome professor!
really helpful prof if your willing to ask him for help. You don't really need the book because he tells you everything you need to know. The book is just to fill in what you might have missed. I didn't use the book at all and still did well. Best recommendation for his class...bring a recorder he talks fast
DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Jo is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to biology. He is also helpful and concise about what he expects from the beginning of the class. Anatomy and Physiology is not an easy class in general, but it was bearable.
Great professor. Very difficult tests, he speaks very fast but is always willing to listen to answers. Great real life examples, cares about what he does, and an overall good experience. Uses powerpoint presentations for class.
His class is unbearable! I'm an A student & love bio, but he makes you frustrated. Unrelevant examples that gets you off the main point.Wordy & loud! Does not use textbook, powerpoints are just pictures and useless, exams are very hard and confusing. He pretends to be passionate about bio. Teaching is not for him. If you want A and sanity, skip him!
he's a great professor and is very passionate about Human Anatomy & Physiology. His class is difficult but if you're interested in the class, and actually try, you'll do well.
not a bad professor, worked super hard to get a C.
Doctor Jo is a very great guy. I am a pre-med student and I took his class and the exams are very poorly written. You will memorize 200-300 muscle and bones in his class in half weeks time. If you are taking more than 10 credits, do not take his class because you will not have enough time to do all the studying and work needed in to get a A.
Professor has high expectations of anybody even new beginners. He is very fast past paced sometimes you just cant keep up.the book is needed but not as much for class but for personal reference. Everyday what you will do is watch power points and take notes.
His tests/quizzes are basically based off his lectures, so attendance is important. He goes through lessons very quickly, and expects a lot from students. In return, he is very willing to help you. He makes biology pretty easy to learn, and uses lots of analogies. He can also be passive aggresive and give snarky comments. Overall good.
He cares so much about his students but his class is extremely hard. He expects a lot from his students and will do anything he can to help, but the rest is up to you. It's a high maintenance class. Only take this class if you feel confident about bio/anatomy and if you have a light class load that semester.
Great professor. You can get an A for sure ... if you're willing to study. But he spells out exactly what you need to know, so it's just a matter of putting the work in.
Difficult but interesting class. Took his 142 class online big mistake but in person great teacher.
Dr. Jo is a GREAT teacher. He is funny & snarky, gives superhero/star wars analogies for everything. You do have to put in work to do well, but he is very passionate about Bio & you will be too. Ask for help if you need it! You are always welcome during office hours even if just to talk. Took 16 credits (including his class) and got an A.
The class was taught at a near Grad level (kinda pissed me off since i singed up for a 100 level class). There would need to be negative points on the "easiness" rating to express how hard this class was. Dont expect an A unless u dont have many other classes. That being said, hes a very intelligent prof who knows what he's teaching and then some.
Really cares about his students. He is willing to go over what you don''t understand. It''s very difficult material to learn but he really tries help you understand WHY IT MATTERS. No busy work. He''s entertaining and funny. The material again is difficult so you will need to find time to study regardless of the teacher
Dr Jo is a fantastic teacher. He tells you his expectations in the first class and holds you to them. He is a tough teacher- however, he is more than willing to help you and go over any material that is confusing. He is entertaining and makes lecture enjoyable. Wants you to leave the class with A&P knowledge more than "test" knowledge. Recommended!
Doctor Jo was not my choice of professor, yet somehow ended up with him. Anyways as already stated very hard exams, skip class you will miss out on way too much, and don't except an easy A. Honestly, I wish I dropped his class before it was too late but if you are a person who likes a challenge then hes def for you! All over.. to difficult.
Dr. Jo changed my life! I chose to be premed after his class. He makes everything sound absolutely fascinating. He emphasizes the big picture implications of what you're learning more so than specifics. Go to lecture, study and you will pass! I took 17-21 credits each semester and got As. Take advantage of his knowledge & willingness to teach.
This is by far the hardest class I've taken yet (I have a Master's Degree in another field, so lots of classes under my belt). This is an online class and you receive very little support from the teacher. The classwork is straight forward and easy to follow along with in the book, but the tests are unbearable.
Possibly the hardest class I've ever taken. It seems like he means well and cares about student success but the tests are impossibly difficult. I do not believe his study guides are helpful. I would not take his class, again. I only remained in the course because of time restraints otherwise I would have looked for another professor to take.
We did one lab the entire 16 weeks and for someone that works better hands on I was hoping that the labs would tie into the lectures and clarify it a little more. He lost my labs I did do alone so now I have to re-purchase. Goes extremely fast, tests never match the study guide. Very poorly taught. Very disappointed
The most frustrating class I've ever taken. Very unclear, rambles often. Study guides are not very helpful. Rushes through everything. Talks about his personal life too much. It's not a super high level biology course but he treats it as such. I had very little knowledge coming in and I was lost during class often. I ended up learning more online.
Took the online 8 week course. LOTS of reading as expected with A&P , but all of the tests were clear and were based off of the homework and quiz questions a lot of the time! Do the work and the extra credit and you are bound to atleast get a C with not much effort!
If you take time to study, then you'll do well in this class. But get ready to study! I put in 45+ hrs per week. He is responsive and willing to help you out if you don't understand something. He also understands that we have a life so is willing to work with you if something comes up. Course work is reasonable. I highly recommend Dr. Jo.
I don't know where these negative reviews are coming from - the exams come directly from the exercises, quizzes, and study guides, plus there is generous extra credit opportunity. super responsive professor who legitimately cares and wants everyone to succeed! of course A&P is a lot of material, but Jo is awesome!
I don't know, Professor Jo seems like a good guy, and he's incredibly knowledgeable in terms of anatomy and physiology, but the fact that his tests, his test study guides, his lectures, and his powerpoints have little overlap in terms of what you actually need to know make the class even more difficult than the subject matter already is.
Dr. Jo is by far the best prof I've ever had. I had medical problems and he completely worked with me and let me take all the tests at different times. I have never met a prof that cares so much about a&p and so much about his students. He is so funny in class while also teaching you so much in a way that's easy to understand. HE IS AMAZING!!!
Professor Jo gives a lot of work and a lot of tests that are very difficult. I asked questions and never got a full answer, just partial information. He offers extra credit worth 30/30, which means nothing when put into 1,000 points. There is so much information to study that putting the 20 plus hour per week that he suggests is not enough.
The class is going to be difficult regardless of your professor. Online class. Dr. Jo makes the class easy to follow w/his format. Very quick to respond. 6 multiple choice tests. Provides "Learning Objectives" for each unit. It's basically a study guide. Complete them while you go over the chapters. It will help with the tests!
Dr. Jo is amazing! His way of teaching is awesome - he wants you to make everything make sense not just memorize it; but you have to attend his lectures and take notes. He isn't critical when grading. He is an amazing educator and was born to teach biology!!
Dr. Jo was one of the best professors I have had! I did my undergrad at UVA, but needed a few prereq classes for PA school. I took A&P from him over the summer and I could not have been happier. He is so engaging, and I truly felt as though he WANTED me to learn! Very prompt with emails, fair grader, excellent at explaining answers when questioned
100% recommend!! I took his class in the spring and found it the most enjoyable of my 3 years at NOVA. He really cares about his students and is passionate about his material. You need to study, but he makes himself available to help with any questions, often letting us out early to make time for individual Q's. Values truly understanding material.
Dr. Jo is a great professor. A&P is a hard class with any prof., but he makes it manageable and he really wants you to do well. He makes sure that everyone understands the content. He usually ends class 45 min early but stays behind to give one on one help/tutor whoever wants to stay. Not a hard-ass when grading.
At the beginning he was nice and gave good feedback when you emailed him, but if you got something wrong and didn't understand his criteria-mean response. The discussion portions of essays, is fickle on what grade you would be getting. He said "intention was to do it at the end so you could see your total points earned BEFORE losing some"<-wth??
Dr. Jo is fantastic. The most entertaining teacher I've had - makes everything seem important, will take time to explain again. Very good individually. The class itself is difficult and material heavy, but Dr. Jo makes it very doable. Class is not mandatory but you should go. Tests are harder but w/ studying its fine. Easy HW. I 100% recommend!
Dr. Jo is absolutely amazing! He taught me everything I know about biology and when he teaches, he really wants you to understand it and apply it to real life. I would recommend him if you are ready to put in the time and effort to really learn. Most all tests are multiple choice which makes it a little easier to get a better grade.
a man who really tries to help you understand and teach you to apply the material in your thinking. Ask questions when you don't know, he wants you to get the content. He is passionate and it is reflected in how he instructs. Take time to study and review material. A great person who wants you to really succeed and understand.
Dr. Jo is an amazing professor. He really cares for his students. His lectures are hilarious and he is able to explain concepts in a way you can understand and apply real world applications. It's important to study hard. I also suggest reading the textbook or recording lectures. Be sure to participate and ask questions. Make it make sense.
There is a lot of material that is covered in this course. However, he does care about his students and provides a study guide for tests. If you pay attention in class, youll do fine. He will help students and listen to their feedback. Even if you dont do well on an exam, homework and lab work will help boost your grade.
Great professor! really passionate about the subject. He doesn't want to continue forward if there are people who don't understand the content, but also doesn't like being behind on the curriculum. very understanding and actually tries to look at things in students perspective. and I personally think his analogies are spot on. I'd say take him!
DO THE DISCUSSION BOARDS. They unnecessarily count a LOT. it dropped me a whole letter grade... DON'T SLACK ON'EM FAM
Very nice man, course is extremely tough. Im not sure if it was because of him or the actual course itself was difficult. But either way it was a very difficult course.
I took Dr. Jo's classes for 141/142 a few years ago at NOVA. I just had to come back here to say that, to this day, Dr. Jo is still the best professor I've ever had. I've gone through so many different bio professors in different classes since then, but nothing has come close this class. It's a hard class, but you'll learn a lot.
Dr. Jo is excellent. Technically excellent, a great lecturer and instructor. Very good at engaging students. PPTs and study guides are organized, very straightforward exams. Not easy, but definitely worthwhile to go w/this Dr. Jo to really learn the A&P basics. Eternally grateful for this guy.
By far my favorite professor at nova! The paper weighed heavy over my head all semester but he's really willing to help you figure out how to write it, you just need to ask. Really cares about his students & makes such a tough subject enjoyable to learn. All other BIO 141/142 professor suck compared to Dr Jo. Do your best & he will pass you!
Professor Jo is very passionate about his subject and he is great as a teacher too. He is very explicit on lectures, he would spoon-feed the students with the material if necessary. He is always ready to help by e-mail or in his office hours. Virtually no extra credit, but his tests are pretty easy and very straightforward.
I took Dr. Jo's 6 week BIO 141 class. For me it was a difficult class because of how fast it moves and how much you have to study during the week. But, it's worth it if you need to get the class done. He is very organized and you know what to expect. He gives prompt communication and is will respond if you have any questions.
You will either love him or hate him. Over explains everything and is scatter brained. Significant amount of online mastering A+P HW more for busy work. He likes using discussion boards for HW. Covid caused a lot of recorded lectures to be viewed on your own time outside of class time to learn the information. Tests are super easy.
soooo much love for prof jo! such a caring, kind and wonderful professor. i enjoyed every bit of this course. took his online course 8 week. it was stressful ngl. a&p was hard but he made it so fun and i wouldn't imagine taking it w another prof. please take him
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST makes the material really understandable even if you don't have a good science background/uses fun & relatable as well as real world references/very understanding & takes extra time to help students who seek him out/also takes the extra time to make sure all of the materials you need are accessable& detailed/reasonable testing
Professor Jo has been the highlight of my semester at nvcc. He's extremely knowledgeable but also kind and patient he really seems interested in your success. You will have to work for it but the work is relevant and always designed to help you study. I hope I can take his Bio 142 class in the fall!!
One of my favorite teachers! He is a fair grader. His tests are hard but he is clear on the material and how to succeed. I put in a lot of time to succeed. If you ask questions, show up to class, do all the work, he'll work with you in your goals to succeed. He talks really fast so his video lectures are helpful resources.
Prof. Jo is very caring and wants you to succeed. He basically gives you 100% on the discussion boards, you can get an A on the labs if you have the textbook, BUT YOU MUST STUDY FOR THE TEST! I am pretty sure he makes his own questions on the test so dont bother trying to cheat. He will accomedate you. But for real Great teacher I would take again!
Professor Jo is such an amazing professor! He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. The course work isn't too heavy, but he really cares about participation and effort. He knows what his students are capable of, and he just wants you to try your hardest. If you put in the effort you will have no problem with this class.
Jo is genuinely one of the best professors ever. The class is hard but you can tell he wants you to pass. He's funny and engaging so if you have a hard time paying attention during lectures, he's a good choice. Just make sure you study because the exams are HARD, but he gives you really specific topics to study so you're never surprised on exam day
Professor Jo makes all the material manageable. He gives you a great guide on the major key points of information. If he says this will be on your exam or pay attention this important it is! I never once had use flashcards however it does require weekly hours of studying. Overall amazing professor who truly loves teaching I cannot wait till 142
Great guy who helps you learn and love anatomy, not memorize it. He keeps lectures entertaining, explains things very well. He's a little hard on due dates. He is very clear on what will be on the tests and what he expects for the few hw assignments. The few quizzes are open note. You HAVE to study!! and you'll pass. TAKE HIM, you won't regret it.
He teaches a hard subject but does it in a way that makes sense. Hes very kind and always willing to help, hes accommodating and clearly wants to see you succeed. Its a lot of studying and labs but he organizes the course into manageable chunks of information. I highly recommend!
He's a great professor and I enjoyed his class. He can, however, be disorganized at times. BIO 141/142 is content-heavy regardless of who teaches it, so don't expect to get by without putting in the work.
Prof. Jo is one of the most caring teachers I have met. He is an incredible teacher and I have so much respect for him. But I will have to say that at times he was really unorganized and a lot of what was put on the tests was strictly lecture based. The homework is not that hard and he gives you what you should know for the exam. Make sure to study
He seems nice and he will be if you are smart if you ask a simple question he will make you feel stupid. He is not like that with everyone but I feel he did not like me because I would understand simple stuff but other than that he is very good at teaching he does have a loootttt of work so be ready to study
He is one of the best teachers I've ever met in NOVA. He really cares about students and gives motivation. He uses simple and funny words to illustrate concepts, so it is easy to know. However, he speaks REALLY fast but provides video, it is helpful. Do work, concentrate on the lecture, memorize what he wants to us know, then you can get A
The assignments were repetitive with the labs and discussion board and quizzes so it was easy to get done. but I'm not a good test taker so this really messed up my grade. you can do all the labs and Hw for the class but if you do not pass the tests you will fail the class so be sure you are a good test taker.
Overall, he is an organized professor and provides slides that make learning easy. Additionally, he is readily available to help. However, exams are lengthy and he does not offer much extra credit.
I took his 6 week summer class in order to avoid taking anatomy at my VCU which is infamous for having awful anatomy classes. He made things enjoyable, and as long as you put time into studying, an A is very doable. He demonstrated more care towards his students than any of my professors at my real school. I cannot recommend him enough!
To all bio classes I had his the best one! The lecture is heavy but it make sense everything. Its not an easy A but you learn so much from him. If he ask you to attend to get extra credit take it. You don't need to purchase anything for the lab. Lab exams is easy. Quiz is open notes/easy. Lecture exams is a challenging. Just pass 3 exam u'll b good
This is a tough class with a lot of information. Prof Jo was great and regularly checked in and provided extra information and help which is rare for an asynchronous class! Tests are hard and the majority of your grade, but if you read your textbook and do your modules without procrastinating then he will set you up for success!
Professor Jo really wants the best for his students! He is so caring and is always willing to help students out whenever they need. The course material can be heavy but he makes sure to provide ways for you to fully comprehend . Overall super amazing and definitely recommend taking him. As long as you study and put the work in you should be fine.
He's very hard when it comes to test and discussion board.......
I took Dr. Jo's BIO 141 and 142 classes. He has a clear interest in the information he is teaching, and his lectures, though information-heavy, are easy to follow and accessible outside of class (on canvas). He also offers easy extra credit work every week, and responds to emails quickly. He's caring of his students, and is nice and willing to help
He is genuinely one of the best professors I've ever had. He's pushed me to ask questions about the material and he is honestly more invested in your success than anything. The material is quite difficult but if you study, the work will 100% pay off.
Lectures are fun/interesting. Guy has funny stories. He has a background in nutrition and is (was) a chiropractor, so he knows a lot about muscles, bones and the nervous system compared to other teachers. His lectures are good, explains things well, and takes the time to answer questions or expand on concepts. Would recommend for A&P 1 and 2.
I took A&P online and Dr. Jo was great! His syllabus was clear, he regularly posted announcements with deadline reminders and grading rubrics, and he was very accommodating (almost to a fault). Lots of homework necessary to learn material, but no surprises on exams. Anybody with reading comprehension who actually does the work will easily pass.
BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. He is very clear and concise about his expectations and grades more than fair. The reading can be a little heavy (3 chapter in one week) but it is very helpful so make sure you read! Exams are about 100 questions so make sure you know concepts. I took the six-week accelerated online course for reference.
He is the best professor of my life. He is a top-notch presenter. He genuinely cares for the students. His group quizzes help classmates to bond strongly. He is the first professor who made me realize learning can be fun. He teaches critical thinking skills. I have learned so well how to study. Knowledge retention is very high!
He's very passionate but his tests are very hard and more than half of the class dropped out of his class. His lectures are very very heavy and you have to pay attention to everything. His study guides aren't that useful either
I took this professor's BIO 141 course and would not recommend it. While he's kind and supportive, the course structure was inefficient. It's lecture-heavy, overwhelming students rather than informing them. With two major exams on the same day & no word bank for the lab, memorizing extensive content was unrealistic. Nearly half the class dropped.
You gotta want it. A lot of information and not much time, if you cram with only a couple days good luck. Otherwise that he gives you pop quizzes so you know where you stand at that time its a good reality check because things on the quiz will be on the exam and is very caring and is rooting for you the entire time!
Really nice professor and explains things well with great examples. Exams are most of your grade, and lectures can be heavy, sometimes going into lab. He's super helpful if you're confused though. The nervous system unit was definitely the hardest so be prepared.
Prof Jo's course is lecture and lab heavy. He's great at teaching concepts, and caring. Pop quizzes are random, fill in the blanks. Lecture and lab exams are on the same day. Lecture exams are multiple choice, he gives a study guide. Use ChatGPT. Lab exams are very difficult. No word bank, memorization. 3/4 of the class dropped out. Study early!!
Truly passionate and engaging professor. Talented in explaining complex topics using vivid, relatable analogies. Fair but strict grading. Canvas lecture videos are a huge help, especially for non-native speakers. The Discussion Board really pushes you to understand deeply. He's humble, inspiring, and genuinely wants every student to succeed.
If you dream of a healthcare career and want to build real competence, Dr. Joe is the one. Teaching is 100% structured, grading is clear, and he has a talent for making complex ideas easy and enjoyable. The support (academically +materials) is exceptional. His LOR helped me get into my dream university. Don't hesitate to enroll you won't regret it!
doesnt keep you in class for that long during lab days unless needed. he understands we have lives and can study at home. love that attendence isnt manditory. he rushes thru slides sometimes but he will go back if you need it. super engaging and nice and fun. will give you easy ways to remember stuff its its confusing. amazing professor tbh.
