Great Class, Great Professor - There's ALOT of readings but its totally worth it in the end. Took it as a freshman and it was overwhelming but I don't regret it at all. Got an A at the end of the course because I put in so much effort. It's do-able. You just need to care enough
Tough class. Prof is brilliant in the classroom, possibly some of the most interesting lectures at Cornell. However, grades are at the hands of the TA who are often quite unfair.
Will definitely not take his class again.
Katzenstein is amazing. Not only is he a funny lecturer, he also clearly cares about the students. Govt 1817 was a difficult class, because of the many readings. grades depend on TA. do readings or die
GOVT3547 was the second course I took with PK. Similar to GOVT1817, US Primacy Challenged was one of the most inspirational courses I took during my time at Cornell; different from lecture style courses, GOVT3547 used HBS case method to study political economy of regional powers around the world. Full length research paper was assigned but no exam!
PK is finally back from Harvard. Actually, he brought back HBS case study method. Although an experimental course, GOVT 3547 run extremely smoothly during the semester and student participation rate, as I noticed, reached almost 80% at last, quite abnormal at Cornell, even at Hotel School. The course is really for every major!
PK is as amazing in GOVT3547 as in his other courses! One part to highlight in this course, besides its HBD case method, is the requirement to write a full-length research paper, which you choose your own topic. The weekly TA session really helps to let you make step-by-step progress finishing the paper from literature review to the conclusion!!!
Took Govt 3547 in Fall 2015 with PK. Easily the best class and professor that I have had at Cornell! I loved the combination of HBS Case Discussions along with amazing lectures by PK. I learned immensely and it really stoked an interest in the field of international political economy. Take a class with PK (esp HBS case method) before you graduate!
I took Gov 3547 with PK this summer. Having taken his Gov 1817 class as a freshman, I had high expectations. I wasn't disappointed. The lectures were wonderful, the class discussions valuable, and the TAs incredibly helpful. I would recommend this class to anyone with even a remote interest global politics/economics.
PK is a fantastic professor! I took GOVT 3547 with him this fall, having heard so much about his lecturing style and insights into world politics. Though I think he's still working out some of the kinks with the course's unusual style (case study-based, with a heavy emphasis on class participation), I learned so much from his lectures.
PK is my favorite professor at Cornell so far. I took GOVT 3547 with him during the Fall 2015. For the course we wrote a 25-30 research paper, read several economics/finance books, and read and debated many Harvard Business School case studies. I gained a lot from the course and feel more prepared to apply to MBA programs after graduation.
Great course. One of the best I've taken at Cornell. Loved the setup with the case method. The 25-30 page paper at first was very daunting but the TA's are extremely helpful and great. Learned so much.
Great course with a unique setup. You must come to class prepared and ready to talk. The 25-30 page paper at first was very daunting but the TA's are extremely helpful and great. Learned so much.
Professor Katzenstein is an inspirational professor. GOVT 3547 was a demanding class as far as participation, but PK is a fair grader. As long as you prepare for class you will be able to succeed. For anyone with a genuine interest in international relations and achieving a global perspective, this is a great class and fantastic professor.
This was one of the best classes that I've taken b/c of how much it pushed me. But, if you are not interested in stepping outside your comfort zone, do not take this class. The TAs were a huge asset helping us learn the nuts and bolts of int'l finance, case study analysis and how to structure our large 25-30 pg paper.
This class was hands down the best course I have taken at Cornell. I recommend it to anyone who is remotely interested in international affairs - any aspect of it! We had a very diverse class in terms of academic interests and that's what made the class great. PARTICIPATION is important!!! Besides, one research paper, which is not TOO tedious.
This class enlightened me in my understanding of the complicated relationship between politics and economics, both at an international and regional level. The HBS case study method was challenging, requiring consistent in-class participation, which led to thorough engagement with assignments. TAs helped tremendously with the long research paper.
I was told that this class would be memorable and it was for many positive reasons.
PK is the best professor I have ever had, and his class on American Primacy was the most beneficial and enriching academic experience I've ever taken part in. He lives and breathes for teaching and will do anything possible to help his students. Head and shoulders above other professors.
Lectures were amazing . The discussion based nature of the course was one of a kind for a lecture of that size. The length and time given to the research paper allowed students to do in depth research on their topic. The professor was unbiased in his lectures, but would never hesitate to challenge students on their assertions.
PK's course was on a level all its own. Case studies, daily debates, a research project, and a crash course on political economy rolled into one class. If you put in the work, it can be one of your most rewarding experiences at Cornell. Essential for any serious IR student.
Professor Katzenstein's intro to IR class is probably one of the most interesting and involved classes I will ever take at Cornell. There is a ton of reading, but by clearly summarizing and understanding the most important parts of each reading and the paradigms they cover, you will do very well in his class.
He's amazing. Best class ever!
Introduction to International Relations is a difficult class. It was also the best class I took this semester. This is a professor who truly cares about teaching us to think and who knows the value of a liberal arts education. Through open mic, open forums, and engaging lectures, he creates a lecture hall that feels like a community.
One of the best professors I've had at Cornell. Genuinely cares SO much about his students and the material. Lots of reading though!
Hard class with lots of reading material, but lectures are very interesting, and the professor is brilliant and funny. TA's may vary but mine was helpful and nice.
I absolutely loved this class. It's definitely not an easy class, but it's an important class. Professor Katzenstein is knowledgable and an amazing lecturer. I will definitely be taking more classes from him in the future.
Best class I have taken at Cornell bar none. Amazing orator who challenges his students while providing an ample support structure for when they need help. Very rewarding.
Wonderful class. Admittedly quite hard, but it is worth it beyond belief. Prof. Katzenstein will give you some of the best lectures of your time in college, along with unexpected humor and insightful discussions. Would recommend to any Cornellian.
Amazing class. By far the hardest class I took this semester, but also the most rewarding. Currently suffering while studying for his final but Professor Katzenstein makes you WANT to work this hard. Keep up with the readings, or at least have a google doc with reliable people to make summaries of all of them.
Amazing course. Amazing Professor
PK's latest class is indispensable to the education of anyone interested in politics, economics, international relations, monetary policy or financial markets. The interdisciplinary nature of the course, and the case study method through which we study and discuss, are incredibly valuable. It is precisely what I wanted out of my Cornell education.
Hands down the best class and best professor. Learned more in this one course than in my three years here. Class structure (HBS cases + real research paper) makes you think, work, and speak. Workload is a fair amount for how much you gain from this class. Very inspirational professor. Courses like this make the tuition $$$ & Cornell name worth it.
Professor Katzenstein reminded me exactly what I was looking for when I applied to Cornell. His lectures are outstanding and, although the workload is heavy, he manages to keep you interested and keen to work and read more. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of his class. I would recommend this course in a heartbeat.
By far the most memorable and worthwhile course I've taken at Cornell. It really gives you a new perspective on world affairs and history through the HBS-case method with absolute awe inspiring lectures by Professor Katzenstein. Cannot stress enough how rewarding taking 3557 has been. Do not graduate without taking at least one PK course.
This class is what distinguishes an Ivy League institution from colleges. PK is super well-prepared for each lecture. Be prepared for a lot of reading and writing, but totally worth it.
PK is one of the most inspiring professors I've had at Cornell, and taking GOVT 3557 was a privilege and transformative experience. This course will enable you to think more critically, challenge existing ideas and build your own arguments through a research paper. Do not graduate Cornell without having taken at least one of PKs classes.
GOVT 3557 makes you think critically about the intersections of politics, economics, and history in novel ways. It's also one of the very few classes that allows you to write a research paper on any subject of your choice. I am forever grateful to PK for giving us the opportunity to think critically and to produce my first serious academic writing
Best class I've ever taken! Both Katzenstein and his TAs want you to succeed and think critically. He really wants you to engage with an care about international relations in any context. The open mic sessions really help you and your friends engage in debates and informal presentations. He is also very funny and interjects this humor in slides.
PK is probably the most renowned and highly esteemed prof in the govt department, and it's true that his lectures are captivating. He is brilliant. Take his class for the inspiration and to hear his words of wisdom. But don't expect an A, and expect to read your butt off. This was probably the hardest class I've ever taken. Very bittersweet.
I took PK's class "America Confronts the World." The class was incredibly interesting, but very difficult. Get ready to engage a lot of abstract conceptual theories and do a lot of reading. The work is worth it, though - if you are willing to engage, you will learn a lot. Not to mention that PK himself is esteemed, funny, and incredibly smart.
Truly an amazing class with very engaging lectures. He wants this class to be fun and enjoyable for his students. This was the first time he taught this class, so I project that it will be even better going forward. His political biases did not affect the course material. Highly recommend to anybody interested in learning more about IR
This course with professor Katzenstein lacked signifgant structure, papers / policy memos while easy to write are irrelevant to lecture and reading material. Lectures were very dull, but the TA sections and discussion were fantastic. Overall, what I learned from this class was insignifigant despite engaging with readings and lectures.
PK is incredible! Highly invested in not only his research, but the world around him. He is very nuanced and inspires students to take responsibility for the world around them w/o inserting political bias. Lectures are dense, and you definitely get the most out of them if you read assigned articles before. Sections are too large, but TAs are great!
The combination of the lecture, and the discussion section with the TA's was invaluable!
Best professor at Cornell it's not even close. One of the smartest minds in his field and the country, you should be required to take his class. I will do everything I can to take more PK classes in the future.
Prof Katzenstein did a really great job with my course. He's an interesting speaker and knows how to create dialogue. Definitely would take the course again.
PK is a real gem. I've taken multiple classes with him and wish I wasn't graduating just so I could keep taking his classes. Requires hard work but is substantive and engaging (HBS case+research paper). Definitely take 3547/3557 before graduating. If you're in the social sciences, your Cornell experience will be incomplete without PK.
PK is the best professor I met, and this course is the most impressive course I took in Cornell. This course changed my mind to pursue my political journalist dream.
Very informative, gives an overall sense of whats happening in the global political economy by reading interesting cases from different countries around the world. if you have no economics background you need to put too much effort, but it is worth it and you will have a good background of the current global economic and political situation.
Professor Katzenstein's class is one of the best I've taken. lectures are organized & thought provoking; class discussions are well moderated and interesting. He encourages you to think & grow critical skills rather than memorize info The research paper is daunting at first but bc its broken down its manageable. TAs are great & key to doing well
Professor Katzenstein is the best professor and person. Unbelievably knowledgeable, unbelievably strict and unbelievably kind. His class is well worth the effort. The TAs are also great and allow for a class like AEM3547 to be possible. I feel grateful and inspired by this class. I have learned a lot about the world and I want to learn much more.
Katzenstein is probably the most famous professor in Cornell's Government department, and there's a reason for that. He is a really interesting lecturer and learning during his classes happens naturally. Sometimes he shows his age but not worse than any other professor over 30. Not particularly hard but lots of reading and writing.
The case-based approach is unique and incredibly rewarding. Teaches you to analyse a country by understanding macroeconomic indicators in combination with political/historical considerations. PK is strict, kind, hilarious and seems to know something about everything. He pushes students to be the best version of themselves - demanding, but worth it!
Best part of the course -- great lectures Worst part of the course -- irrelevant readings
He is good, but his lectures have little to do with the material read outside of class.
It's my honor to take his class. Although reading is alot, his class is really inspirational. Humorous and nice guy. Accessible. Will take his class again.
One of the greatest professors I have ever seen, deserve any admiration. Anyone who has a chance should take his courses.
I wish I attended the lectures more, but when I did I learned a lot. Everyone at Cornell should take his class
PK is a gem. He is a master conversationalist and a gifted speaker. He cares about what you think and isn't afraid to say what he feels. He is biased toward his school of theory, but can provide explanations in many. I can't recommend him enough.
PK is the someone I'd want as an interesting grandpa, but not really as a professor. This class is completely different from what I expected of the title (Making Sense of World Politics) I almost feel more confused. It is without a doubt that I've learned a huge amount of material, but how I actually feel about the material is hard to answer :/
Katzenstein is a wonderful professor, and I greatly enjoyed the time I had taking Intro to IR. The course itself is a very difficult course without question, but it does a good job of paving new ways for you to think and analyze the world. Katzenstein has a great approach of placing students first and being a guide through this course.
PK is one of the most respected professors in the Government Department. Although he tries to make class fun and wants his students to be engaged, his lectures are often extremely difficult to follow and notes (for readings or class) are indecipherable. Be prepared for this class to take over your life as the readings are lengthy and abundant.
Great teacher, great class. If you get the chance, take it, because I learned a lot (but be ready to read a lot for homework). If you do the readings, the class isn't that difficult, definitely not too stressful. You can get away with not buying/reading the Drezner book, but it may help you understand the concepts a little better.
PK made the lectures very interesting and helpful. I found that discussion led by the TA's was the most helpful part of the course and helped explain the readings. The lectures are amazing, but be prepared to read like crazy. If you are willing to put in the work this class will reward you.
A lot of hype around PK. As you see by other ratings, people view him as an amazing professor although most all of the teaching happens with your TA. PK even says he's the last resort when you have inquiries, consult every TA first. Lectures lack structure and connection to readings is extremely weak. Readings unreasonably hard for an intro level.
Professor Katzenstein is truly an incredible professor, deserving his fame. Lectures can be dense at times, just like the readings, however, they are still incredibly insightful. The course is an insane undertaking, but if you put in the time, the gains are incredible. PK is also extremely accessible, and office hours are extremely fun and valuable
This class is truly challenging but rewarding. Definitely expect a lot of readings but I learned how to skim by the end of the semester. PK is very knowledgeable and the classes is very organized. One of the best classes I took at Cornell.
AMAZING CLASS. There's a lot of reading, have never seen so much in my life. However, this class does make you critically think. Everyone at Cornell should take one of his courses. He makes the class fun, even though itll consume a lot of your time. He's also very funny. Great fashion sense, lots to turtlenecks.
one of the most amazing academic experience I have ever had.
The course is hard because the material is hard, and he views his students as intelligent and capable, so he has high standards. He is an excellent professor, truly inspiring. He says for the first half of the course lots of things won't make sense and he's right, but by the end he's right that it does make sense and changes world views.
He often speaks without a microphone a bit too softly to understand with his accent. When you can hear him though, Professor Katzenstein comes across as an incredibly humble, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic professor. Makes lots of jokes during lectures, and cares passionately about what he teaches. I learned A LOT in this class.
This was probably one of the best classes that I've taken in my university career. PK is truly a fantastic professor that invests a lot of thought into designing his classes and knows exactly what he wants students to take away from them. This being said, class would greatly benefit from having more TAs and smaller sections!
Wonderful professor - I appreciated how insightful his lectures were, and how often he gave us a chance to share our thoughts and opinions on a given topic. The material he covered was very interesting, and the readings often pretty thought-provoking. Overall not too difficult of a class, and I definitely appreciate taking it.
PK is a fabulous professor, the best I've come across so far at Cornell. He changes the way you perceive the world, doesn't force you to agree with him, has a fabulous sense of humor and teaches you to think critically. I recommend everyone at Cornell to take at least one of his classes. The skills he teaches are useful in practically every field.
Didn't know what to expect from this course, having heard all the hubub from its appearance on Fox News, but each lecture left me thoroughly impressed. PK is a great lecturer and brings an interesting perspective to pol. That being said, we need more TAs!!! Sections were way too large and made it difficult to feel comfortable speaking during them.
Katzenstein changed my life. This class changes your perspective on the whole world and teaches you to think in a completely new way. PK teaches you to think, read, and write critically. This course is a lot of reading and is challenging, but you will come out of it feeling so rewarded. TAs were all ridiculously smart and extremely helpful.
An incredible scholar. It was an honor to have been taught by him. His analyses on readings - both simple and dense - provide you with depth and very necessary clarity. This is NOT AN EASY class. You have to be willing to read, read and read! If you are interested in IR, this class is a must. He loves his students and wants everyone to succeed!!!!!
I regret taking this class. All the other hype about PK from the reviews is extremely misplaced. As a junior, I've had much better professors than him. His lectures are irrelevant to the tests (and boring) and you can skip. The amount of reading is atrocious and the sections can barely cover it. The TA's are hard graders as well
Absolutely loved Katzenstein's class. Even though I am a Hotel student, I took his Intro to IR class in my freshman fall and it is still my favorite class to this date. Would recommend anyone to take a course taught by Katzenstein.
PK is an excellent teacher and I would take any course he was teaching without even knowing the subject matter. He encourages students to think more deeply, to seek nuance, and to resist the temptation of easy answers to complex problems.
This is my second time taking Professor Katzenstein, my first time was three years ago as a freshmen. His lectures are amazing and he provides thought provoking perspectives on issues. Best professor Ive had at Cornell.
Aside from his clear genius, PK is one of the most accessible professors I have had at Cornell so far. For someone with so much expertise, he makes everyone feel as if their opinion and input is valuable. That is what makes him unique.
Taking a class with PK is the best way to learn about pretty much anything you within the sphere of international relations - he has open "labs" and you can ask him literally anything and he'll almost certainly know the answer. His lectures are informative and his assignments give you a lot flexibility. Lectures can be hard to follow sometimes.
I absolutley loved professor Katzenstein PK is one of the best teachers i've ever seen and he is never biased or politically motivated in any way. I absolutley loved his classes and I highly suggest anyone who is atcornell to do the same !! Both my dad and Uncle had him as well, they all loved him
Professor Katzenstein is extremely knowledgeable, kind, and available for help. He truly wants all of his students to succeed, and everybody should take a class with him if they have the chance. Worked hard at making all students feel comfortable whether or not they agreed with his views, and was overall amazing.
PK is a wonderful professor. Wears the hottest turtlenecks. Inspires devotion and thought. Please take him -- you won't regret it.
This is my first class taught by PK. It is actually my first GOV class as I am not a GOV major and I only took this class out of interest. PK is a great lecturer and did a phenomenal job at creating a safe space for female students and minorities to share their thoughts in class. He is also very caring and respectful of his students.
This class was very interesting and is applicable to practical understandings of modern politics. PK is a very great lecturer and this class was one of the only gov classes that I have actually enjoyed at this school. The papers were intense, but overall assisted with my development as an academic scholar. :)
The class and lectures were interesting, but not completely necessary to complete the policy memos and book review, which your grade is based on. The writing assignments are also fairly straightforward and relatively easy to complete.
If you give half a crap about what's going on in the world, take a class w PK. No exams and a lot of freedom w assignments to write about what you want, so you get from the class what you put into it, but to have him as a professor is a privilege. First time in a while I felt like I was in class to learn something important, not just for a grade.
One of the best professors at Cornell. Timeless wisdom.
Best class I have taken at Cornell. Prof Katzenstein is amazing!
I have taken two classes offered by Professor Katzenstein while at Cornell. I found both of them to be excellent, and the lectures were highly engaging. My one comment would be that on occasion in his lower level classes it seems the lectures are a little disconnected from material outside of class, but students should still definitely attend! A+
One of those rare courses where you are incentivized to learn for the sake of learning, not to cram for a test. Discussions were intimidating but thoughtful. PK is respected, wise, and has a great sense of humor. This class is about endurance, you need to come prepared for each lecture.
One of the finest professors I've learned from at Cornell. PK is an articulate, brilliant, and compassionate instructor. If you're interested in taking the most comprehensive course on modern international politics and the global economy - this is it. No exams, grade primarily based on term paper so you can sit back and enjoy the lectures.
He crafts his lectures beautifully. This was one of the best courses I have taken at Cornell. Katzenstein is truly a remarkable professor who deeply cares about his students. His passion for the subject matter is apparent and inspirational.
By far the best class I've taken in the GOVT major. PK is a pro. It's a little harder than most GOVT classes at Cornell, but you will learn a ton.
PK's class is a must-take if you are studying government, intl. relations or policy related subjects. The most valuable thing about taking a class with renowned professor with a lot of experience is that he slips in bits and pieces of wisdom during lectures. You just can't get those with other professors, even though they may be good lecturers
You have the opportunity to study twenty-something countries' political and economic decisions, engage broad, international themes of the political economy, under one of the most renowned professors of international relations in the world.
Was so close to dropping this class in the beginning but so grateful I didn't. Best class I've taken at Cornell, taught by the best professor too. He is hilarious, wise, and supportive--even if you say something silly, he helps correct you, but not in a condescending way. Definitely requires effort, but it's truly interesting content.
PK is by far one of the best professors I've had at Cornell. This class is plenty of work but it is by far worth it as you will learn a whole lot.
Taking Professor Katzenstein's class was the best decision I made at Cornell. His breadth of knowledge about the IR field is immeasurable. If you put in the work and pay attention in lecture, you'll enjoy invaluable tangents (sprinkled with some German humor) and incredible insights from a true scholar. I'm honored to have had this opportunity.
By far the best class I've taken at Cornell. PK goes to great lengths to make the class relevant, and his wisdom is unparalleled. Despite it being taught online, he still made class super engaging. PK even arranged a private discussion section for me and one other student b/c we were stuck in Asia during covid -- a true testament to his character.
PK is super legit, but also a teddy bear. He expects a lot from his students but at the same time will baby you through it. By far the smartest prof. ive ever had, if you are actually interested in learning there is nobody better than PK.
Fantastic professor. Learned so much this semester through the HBS case format and his warm call system
PK is really great - he definitely lives up to the hype. I wish I could've the opportunity to see him teach in person, but he was still impressive in our online class. He's tough and really challenges you, not letting anyone get away with a half-baked statement (as I found, oh god)! But he's actually super caring and he genuinely wants us to learn.
Absolutely exceptional! The most engaging and inspiring professor I have encountered in my college career. This class was incredibly exciting, despite being online. I learned more in this one class than I have in previous semesters. Take this opportunity and I promise you won't regret it. :)
PK is awesome. He is so educated on the subject matter, but is so willing to hear other opinions and answer questions. There was some reading for this class, but he understood that it could be a lot so he would instead highlight one or two readings he deemed "necessary." He is so nice and has a lot of cool stories as well!! 10/10 would recommend!
Peter Katzenstein is the best professor I have had at Cornell thus far. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about the course material. He values and appreciates student contribution to discussion and stimulates deep thinking about the issues. Really wish I could've taken his class in person.
Professor Katzenstein is fantastic. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot from his lectures. He was especially aware of the challenge COVID-19 presented and reflected that in the graded work we received this semester. There were a good amount of readings and memo assignments were difficult at times, but overall it was a great class.
PK was an excellent and informative professor who made every lecture infinitely enjoyable.
Really exceptional! This class was great to really understand the role of America in the world on a deeper level. Despite being online PK kept the lectures engaging all throughout the semester. I would 100% recommend
One of the best classes I have taken at Cornell despite it being online.
PK is great, very well-versed in International Relations and different countries/societies. You will learn a lot, and I highly recommend doing the readings, very interesting. The class is fairly easy, there's only about 6 writing assignments spread throughout the semester. No tests, no quizzes. Mandatory attendance.
Professor Katzenstein is easily the best professor I have had during my time at Cornell. His commitment to the material and to encouraging debate during class makes 2817 an excellent experience. I found myself thinking in a new way about certain aspects. Without reservation I would recommend this and any other course Professor teaches at Cornell.
PK is probably one of the best lecturers I've had at Cornell and the class is vital for anyone interested in international relations. Govt2817 is structured in a weekly discussion about a different state/region, their history, and their relationship with the United States. We also discussed the position of the US internationally and its direction
PK makes this class accessible to people from all majors, so do not be afraid if you are not a GOVT or AMST major or if you've never taken a class in those departments at all. The readings are easy to follow and PK explains them masterfully. This class is IDEAL for anyone interested in understanding American politics and foreign policy. PK is a gem
I have taken two classes with PK now, and he is easily my favorite professor at Cornell, for my 2.5 years here so far. I am not a govt major but I learned a great deal about international politics (and life) from him. PK is very knowledgeable, poses provoking thoughts, and encourages questions. Very grateful for him and 10/10 would recommend.
Not really bad, but super overrated. 50% of the grade is participation so if you don't want to speak up in zoom lecture you can't really get an A. I was disappointed. I had high expectations and he didn't live up to the hype. Class was moderately interesting at best and boring at worst. He's really just another academic, not that special. Sorry
PK is a good professor, very knowledgable and friendly. My class had about 50 students, you needed to fight to participate pretty much every class to do well. He also randomly selects students to go over the readings during each class, so you need to read everything. You never know how well you're doing since grades aren't posted until semester end
UNBELIEVABLE PROFESSOR. I was once told that taking a class with him was something every Cornell student had to do before they graduated. This was right, but one seems far too few.
Great professor and super nice during office hours. The class grading depends on participation and biweekly policy memos though Not an easy A
Good class but definitely a lot of readings. Grade dependent on midterm, paper, final exam, and section participation.
The best prof I have ever come across. I'm convinced no one is more knowledgeable. He incorporates lots of historical events + present-day ones relating to material. PK is incredibly wise, intelligent, funny + shows at every moment how much he cares for students + how much he loves to teach, Tons of work needed to do well tho. unique course style
Great guy, great class, lots of reading though
My interest in international relations significantly increased as a result of taking this class. Definitely lots of readings and analytical thinking, but PK does a great job at making the course content both interesting and relevant to whats going on in the real world. 10/10 would recommend
Very knowledgeable and cares a lot about the course
PK was a great professor! The lectures were very engaging, mostly reviewed and expanded upon readings. The coursework is difficult, and there are a lot of readings to stay on top of, however, the readings all build on each other, and discussion is a good place to ask questions. Definitely a class I would recommend to anyone interested in IR.
Professor Katzenstein is an inspiring lecturer who was able to turn every topic into a new way of thinking about one's own life. Lot's of readings, pretty hard papers and exams, but all was worth it in the end. I would recommend this class only if you are willing to put hours into readings/studying, and also want to learn critical thinking skills.
He's amazing. I'm a senior and best professor I've bad at Cornell. If you're willing to work and think, take this class
He was a great proffessor that was very caring of his students and knowledgeable. However, the course is incredibly intimidating and heavy for a freshman/if you are taking any other heavy courses with it. For perspective, we had to know 71 pdfs for the final exam. The course is theory heavy and his lectures are very analogy heavy.
Lectures are useless and scratch the surface of what is covered in exams. Easily the most disorganized class I've taken at this school. Even my TA expressed his confusion with PK's instructions. Received almost no guidance for the formatting of the final paper which counted for a large portion of the grade. Would not take a class with PK again.
Professor Katzenstein is very knowledgeable and provided a very engaging introduction to International Relations. The lectures were always very interesting and he found ways to engage students in every lecture. However, this class has a lot of readings that are important to understand the lectures. Definitely recommend this class.
PK is incredibly knowledgable about IR & encourages students to think critically. He puts a lot into this course and cares for his students. Beware, his lectures can be abstract / monotonous. Many challenging readings are assigned, but they helped me practice the skill of reading effectively. Discussion is very helpful. Highly recommend.
Prof. PK is not only a good teacher but also an amazing listener and life instructor. I like making connections with him and to some extent he is a character at the turning point of my life.
Although the class was challenging, it was very rewarding. PK knows so much and it was fun to learn from him.
I really enjoyed PK's class. I liked the discussion, case-study style of the class as it was unique to any other class I'd taken so far.
PK is the best.
The best prof I have ever had. I'm convinced no one is more knowledgeable. PK is incredibly wise, intelligent, funny + shows at every moment how much he cares for students + how much he loves to teach. Tons of work needed to do well tho, unless you already are confident. unique course style. expands ur mind to all aspects of IR + Econ across time
One of the best professors I have ever had at Cornell. His lectures are engaging and his insights are though provoking. Participation in class discussion does count for your grade so you have to come to class having read the material. He does "warm calls" so he may approach you before class and let you know that you'll be speaking on something.
3547 has been my favorite class at Cornell thus far. PK is witty, inspiring, and incredibly engaging. As long as you come to class prepared, you're guaranteed to both enjoy and challenge yourself, as well as your classmates. This class has contributed immensely to my research paper writing and public speaking skills. It's a must-take at Cornell.
GOV 3547 is probably one of the best classes I've taken at Cornell and PK is indisputably the best instructor I've had. He can be intense for some people but to be honest that is part of his mystique. He is an expert in his field but also wise from his years and perspective, which he imparts on the class too. I am grateful to have taken the class.
The discussion style of the class is what makes the class so unique. Participation is a big part of your grade. The research paper is daunting but you spend the whole semester writing. PK is a great professor, very personable, and tries to make class fun but also challenging and thought provoking, I highly recommend taking.
PK is a brilliant and incredibly intelligent man. His class requires participation, as it is structured around active debate, and all opinions are welcome if they are well thought out and defended. If you take any of his courses, I encourage you to attend his office hours to get to know him a bit better outside of the classroom.
Challenged how I think, why I think, and certainly how I should be approaching International Relations (intro class indeed). Going to OH and talking with TAs complemented our mandatory readings. I cannot overstate how enjoyable the class is, I regret not pushing myself to participate more. thank you for having me, wish i could take it again. indo
One of my favorite gov classes! If you prep before, you can enjoy discussion with no need to take notes. Final paper is a lot of work but split up into smaller assignments throughout the semester. PK is a great teacher and always willing to chat in OH. Even though he does warm calls sometimes, he's always willing to guide you to the right answer.
PK is epic. His lectures are inspiring, and this class cultivated my interest in IR. Be careful, there is SO much reading for this course, including 71 PDFs, a novel, and a book about the cold war. If you are willing to do the work, you will gain much more than just IR knowledge from this class. It is so worth it.
PK is best of all times.
Katzenstein is pretty good, but don't let the RMP fool you into thinking it is an easy A. You will learn an incredible amount from the material assigned (which there is a lot of). Lectures are not useful but discussions are. Not a lot of guidance in what is looked for in the paper and is graded weirdly. Prelim was easy. Final was hard.
Take it its great
This is a somewhat challenging class with a large amount of reading. That said, there is a reason that PK is so respected. He is an incredibly gifted lecturer and he makes the subject all the more engaging with his own perspectives and insights. Discussion section was very useful as well. If you ever take a Govt class at Cornell, take one with PK.
I don't understand a lot of the hype behind PK. His lectures are often very vague and don't align with readings, and he absolutely does not stop to explain concepts or even post them online. That being said, midterms were fair, but grading varied drastically based on TA. Reading quantity was unrealistically large, don't know if I would recommend.
Overhyped professor, lots of reading. Oftentimes his lectures will confuse more than clarify. Take the class if you are interested in learning about world politics and theory, not because you hear good things about Katzenstein.
Katzenstein has very interesting lectures so if you take this class the lectures are the highlight. That being said, while the lectures do relate to the readings, attending lecture is not mandatory to do well on exams. However, there is a lot of challenging reading that is VITAL for exams so don't leave it for last minute.
3547 was the best class I've ever taken. PK takes some getting used to, but I loved him and I know almost everyone else did too. People cried on the last day of class. The class is no joke and it requires a lot of attention, that said, the material is very interesting and I enjoyed the work. Grading reflects the effort you put in. TAs were amazing.
The course itself is worth taking because of the great readings. But lectures were truly bad and confusing. Most of the time, they were useless in terms of helping to understand the course material. Lots of the things I`ve learned I owe to my TA. So if you see that you are blessed with a good TA, don`t drop this course. You`ll get through it.
I'm so glad I took this class, but it was definitely a challenge. PK is super cool and his lectures are very interesting, but not really relevant to the exams. Your grade will depend almost entirely on your understanding of the (very dense) readings and your TA, so its worth it to take good reading notes and pay attention/participate in section.
I took "Understanding World Politics" with PK, and I was a little disappointed. We were assigned graduate level readings (71 in total) in which we had to know in detail for the final exam. Although PK is brilliant, I was not always engaged in what he was saying in lecture because it was kinda over my head.
PK is not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved his style of teaching, he knows a ton. Do the readings (don't read word for word but understand the general argument and compare to other readings, and PARTICIPATE in section and lecture! Your TA may be hard or easy but don't wait to find out. Lecture is worth going to even if it won't be on the exam.
Did not enjoy PK. Tried very hard to be funny, should have tried to competently deliver a lecture.
PK is a standout both at Cornell and in the political science world at large. His lectures are deeply insightful and engaging. PK clearly cares greatly about his students and readily unpacks difficult topics. PK's style may not resonate with everyone, but his political prowess is on another level.
Thinks his class is much harder than it is
Really great professor teaching a very tough course. Lectures are engaging and easy to follow, as long as you do the extensive (80+ pages per week) readings. Course material is also very interesting, and PK delivers it in a really well thought out way.
GOVT1817 is probably the most difficult intro course within the Gov. Dept. at Cornell, but it is PK's lecturing that makes it all worth while. I found myself intrigued with what he had to say, along with listening to his thought processes on many different international issues. He truly cares for his students, and is amazing. Get ready to read!
I really enjoyed this class overall. The readings were a lot, but if you keep up with them each week and take notes you should be fine. This class is probably on the more difficult side for freshman/those who haven't taken IR classes before but it definitely prepares you for the future and the lectures are very engaging.
PK is one of the most influential scholars in the IR field, and this is an incredible class regardless of whether you are just looking for an introduction or intend to go further in the field. The lectures are very interesting (but not that helpful for exams), and the 65 readings are dense, long, and crucial for understanding the course content.
PK's course is the perfect introduction to world politics for Government majors and non-majors alike. His insight provides students with a fundamental understanding of the interconnectedness and complexities of world politics and the critical thinking tools we as students need to understand, engage with, and lead such a complex world.
PK is an incredible professor who will teach you how to think. The class is difficult but absolutely worth the effort. Would recommend to any student doing liberal arts.
PK embodied the liberal arts doctrine within his lectures; his love of the material and persistence both in teaching and in writing about international politics is deeply shown. TA's are incredible and put so much work into making the course possible. A lot of work, but one of the best courses I've taken at Cornell.
PK is a phenomenal professor. I enjoyed attending each of his lectures, even if the topic/readings were confusing. PK is available outside of class time for office hours and is very willing to support struggling students. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would highly reccommend!
Katzenstein is amazing- difficult class, lots of work, but really rewarding if you're interested in the subject. Go to his office hours!
Great professor, lots of work.
PK is a great and engaging teacher that pushes you to think critically and learn in and outside of the classroom. There are a lot of readings (that are sometimes dense) and the lectures can be a bit hard to follow at times, but the TA's help you catch up.
He's a professor who is evidently passionate about his work and passionate about teaching, it wasn't always easy but I would definitely recommend.
PK is a very well-respected scholar in the political science world and to learn IR (International Relations) from him was a great experience. PK genuinely cares about students and makes time outside of lectures to engage with them! There are a lot of readings but you should def do them all if you want to do well in this class. Would def recommend!
Such an inspiring class. I love PK he gives cute grandpa vibes. Helps you learn how to think and approach not just International Relations but life in general. You don't need to extensively read every reading but get the gist of all them- our TA will most likely help summarize them in less fluffy academic terms in section.
PK is a brilliant professor and incredibly versed in his field. There is no doubt that if the topic he teaches is one that interests you, the class will be extremely rewarding. However, his class is one of the most demanding 4 credit classes that there is, with the homework and studying required often exceeding what I get from my 6 credit classes.
Lot's of reading. Lectures are a bit difficult to follow.
PK covers all of the basic concepts of International Relations, while also making difficult material highly accessible. He is entertaining at times but also clearly takes the subject very seriously. He teaches students how to think critically, not just about IR and political science, but in the world of academia and the world at large.
This was by far my favorite course I've taken at Cornell. PK cares about his students. His lectures are exciting and inspirational, and you can tell he loves what he studies. The reading workload is really heavy. You have to do the readings to do well in this course. Tests were fair and papers were fair. I really loved this class.
Professor Katzenstein is a really good professor, who is really passionate about the course. The lectures began with open mics, discussing news events, which I really enjoyed. The course had a lot of super important readings, which made it hard to keep up.
PK is a very genuine person. He is very knowledgeable, but more importantly you can tell he cares about his students and his work. His lectures are always entertaining and the discussions are insightful. The course was extremely challenging with many dense readings, but he was great.
I wish he were my grandpa. This man must be protected at all costs.
I took this course my first semester but dropped it for difficulty reasons. This did not stop me from taking it in my third semester as a government major. PK pushes your limits :)
PK is goated. Heavy reading, utilize the TAs.
PK big slay. I will honestly never forget some of his lectures/advice. He is honest and respected but not cold at all. Scary at first tbh but now I want to invite him to family dinner. Tons of readings and things can be really hard to grasp. Had a great TA which prob made the difference. Exams were tough.
Great course with a very interesting professor. PK's experience and knowledge is what makes this course even better. You definitely learn a lot in GOVT 1817.
This class was tough, but I learned a lot.
Ranked the 8th most influential political scientist of the past 20 years by his peers, PK is on a mission to evolve International Relations discourse. You will be challenged, but this will be the class you'll be glad you have taken.
Kind of a bizarre guy but he's clearly brilliant and once you get used to him the class totally opens up. The dense array of knowledge he is able to convey is really impressive, and he's very accommodating, also continually praising of the TA's, and genuinely invested in every student's voice and experience.
Definitely a tough class, but one that's worth taking. There are a lot of challenging readings but as long as you stay on top of it and attend discussion sections regularly you should be fine. I would suggest going to office hours to discuss writing assignments with your TA, as each of them grade differently.
Freshman taking the class in their first semester: No matter how ready you think you are to do copious amounts of work coming from high school, (yes, IB students too. I would know, I was one) you probably aren't. This class is a LOT of work, but would do all the work over again in a heartbeat. Amazing class, new knowledge, and AMAZING PROFESSOR!
PK is a good lecturer, but his lectures are at times hard to follow, and he moves very quickly through slides. It is hard to gain anything from the lectures. The midterm was mostly on a book not taught in the class that you have to read in all the spare time you have while doing the 65 other long readings for the course.
I took GOVT2817 on US foreign relations. I really enjoyed the lectures of this course; the professor was well spoken and encouraged students to engage. I will say, that if you don't have a base understanding of international relations, it is a bit of a learning curve. There is a lot of writing, some with ChatGPT integrated as a learning tool.
The professor is awesome, take a class with him. It's based on 8 writing assignments, but 3 of them dropped which was so helpful Success in this class isn't too hard, but requires effort. Go to TA hours, pay attention to the prompts, and be engaged. PK has such incredible insight and this class directly discusses controversies and current events.
PK helps students understand how to think about the world and about politics.
PK is a great professor. I highly recommend taking any of his classes.
PK is a great lecturer. Each class I learn something new and this always changes my perspective on relevant topics. Lab sections gave students the opportunity to interact with PK and ask questions about the course.
Class is great, you are graded on 8 papers written throughout the semester (no midterm/final) and participation. PK's lectures combine current events, history, political theory - and he's brilliant to learn from. Best part of his classes are emphasis on student discussion: he frames debates and provides details, but students learn from each other.
PK really cared about his students' learning and wanted us all to do well
PK is very caring of his students and clearly knowledgeable about the subject. There is a reading list of 5+ readings per lecture but don't need to read them bc there are separate readings for the writing assignments. 8 assignments, 3 get dropped. Rest of class is based on participation. Lectures are fast bc he wants everyone to learn from reading.
Katzenstein will change the way you view the world, and challenge your preexisting beliefs.
Very interesting class, great professor.
Professor Katzenstein is well liked by the student population. He is always open to chat in office hours, he has a very laid back attitude to his lectures and just wants people to discuss and debate. Your grade will very much depend on which TA you have.
PK is an institution in the GOVT department, and for good reason! 2817 was pretty labor intensive, with 8 1,000-1,500 word papers due over the course of the semester. However, the lowest 3 grades get dropped so doing well is definitely achievable. I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone with a genuine interest in international relations.
PK is super interesting and always happy to talk to students. Really stresses the complexity of politics and IR, will change your lens on world politics.
PK is passionate and knowledgeable. His lectures are fun and engaging, and I found myself wanting to do as many of the readings as I had time for even though we are not tested on them. The only assignments for this class are 3-4 page essays on assigned topics, which are due roughly every other week. The rest of the grade is participation.
The lectures are in a massive room and have over a hundred students which makes it hard for the professor to make that 1:1 connection. The worst part of this is how fast he moves from slide to slide which is frustrating because you paying so much tuition to not even get the bare minimum which is slides.
PK is quite knowledgeable about his subject material. Coming to his class definitely will challenge your intellectual capacity and get you to think about your values deeply.
PK was great. I loved how the class was structured, 8 papers, top 5 graded, the rest participation. I learned a lot. Talked a lot about current issues and this class expanded my perspective of the world and world issues. I would take this class over again.
This class was structured around weekly essays and involved an incredibly wide array of material. I learned a lot. It's not the easiest class, but anyone can succeed if they're willing to put the work in.
Awesome professor with deep knowledge of modern history. He is genuinely interested in the subject he teaches and the class is debate-oriented.
PK's classes are the type of classes you should schedule around. It is a fantastic class for anyone in any major. 2817 was the best class I have ever taken. I cannot recommend it enough. The workload was manageable and enjoyable (8 essays over the semester, 5 went to your grade, no exams) and most people got an A or B.
PK is a passionate and thoughtful lecturer, challenges his students to think about world politics in a new way. His office hours are also very interesting and he is open to talking about anything, would recommend!
I loved this class! PK is a really engaging lecturer, the content is super interesting, and the syllabus is flexible enough to allow for in-depth discussion of current events. There are a lot of written assignments, but they are relatively short and the grading criteria is clear.
Excellent course, 3547 is even better
PK is a great lecturer and he is very knowledgeable about global and international affairs and modern history. This course was structured around 8 essays throughout the semester, out of which 5 were counted towards out grades. PK is very interested in hearing what students think and what we think about the news.
The Professor is interesting, and the class is a great introduction to American foreign policy. The assignments are easy and you will learn a lot if you haven't taken similar classes in the past.
The professors lectures are always interesting and make you think critically. I highly advise going to office hours if you're unsure about things, as PK would be more than happy to talk through it with you.
Taking one of PK's courses is insightful and necessary experience for anyone at Cornell, especially gov/social science major. He pushes students to challenge each other & themselves when it comes to a myriad of IR topics. Lots of readings, 8 total essays, 5 of which go towards your grade. Amazing professor and expert in the field.
PK is an insightful man and his GOVT 2817 allows students to explore foreign policy topics that interest them.
By far the most inspiring professor of my undergraduate experience.
Great lecturer who is able to teach complex IR theories and contextualize them with historical examples. Stresses the complexity of issues and challenges students to expand their perspectives and develop their own critical thinking to continue applying course concepts going forward. Although he seems intimidating, he's very available to students.
great class and PK is the best. take a class with him.
Cool Prof
PK is an incredibly knowledgeable, eloquent, and kind professor. He goes through his lecture materials fast, but you should be fine if you have done the readings. He also stresses participation (50% of the grade) so you need to participate in discussions and go to his office hours/lab sessions.
PK is one of the best professors at Cornell. A must take for government majors.
I liked this class, but it made me cry a lot.
Probably the most knowledgeable and interesting professor in the department, maybe the college but there are a ton of readings
This class is super interesting, and PK is clearly a brilliant lecturer with tons of knowledge and experience to share with the class. He is highly respected among students and faculty alike, for good reason. The course itself was interesting, though hard to follow at times, especially as someone with little experience in IR.
Lectures were confusing and hard to get anything out of- slides full of text were passed through quickly. Cannot understand why he wont post his powerpoints. Essays were graded harshly, midterm was straightforward, but final is based on detailed understanding of ALL 70 of the readings. An insane amount of work that is not very rewarding in the end.
PK is an amazing professor, I definitely recommend taking him at some point. He's respected within the field of IR and a genius with the topic. Which can make lectures hard to follow? But worth it GOVT1817 is definitely one of the harder ones, but he's very understanding of abences. Also, the TA I had was amazing so I really recommend!!
Listen, I totally agree. PK is such an amazing lecturer, but if you get a bad TA like I did you are absolutley screwed. This class had one major problem: lectures were basically required and had nothing to do with what we were actually graded on. I loved the lectures but that had nothing to do with the 65 graduate-level readings we had to read.
Awesome class! PK was the best and such a knowledgable lecturer on such cool ways of looking at International Relations. TA grading was slightly unclear on weekly writing assignment but only grade 5/8 and the other 50% of class is attendance, participation in lecture. Open mics for first 15-25 minutes of class were great. Love you PK!!
Graded on a curve. Class is very intimidating as a first year; lost countless hours of sleep and weekends just catching up on readings and papers. BUT, lectures are fascinating, and he truly does teach you how to critically think. Prof goes on weird rants every now and then though; once went on a tangent about how CIA killed JFK.
PK is one of the best professors at Cornell, not for everyone as he is very serious, but adapts the course to make sure every student gets heard. Challenging readings demand understanding key arguments, and attending TA discussions ensures success. Grateful for a fantastic semester, I'd retake PK's class eagerly!
Your least favorite Gov majors favorite Gov professor
I wouldn't recommend taking this class as a freshman, the amount of readings and preparation for the final might hit you like a truck. PK himself was super funny and very engaging. Although, some concepts were tough to grasp. Grading honestly depends on your TA for papers and participation so make sure to READ as your grade heavily depends on it.
Katzenstein is an actual genius and he made 1817 an amazing experience. I learned a lot. I do warn you, though: Your grade is heavily dependent on which TA you get, getting a good grade basically requires reading all of the thousands of pages of readings, and essays are grade on extremely vague guidelines. Lectures are mandatory, but interesting.
PK is a great professor. His class is very hard, and there is a lot of reading, which is very important for the papers and tests. The work is not very lecture-heavy. It will take a lot of work, but it is a very interesting class with an engaging professor.
Lectures seem to do nothing other than stroke PK's own ego. You learn nothing in lecture and your grade depends only on the TA. The first half of the class focuses on American domestic politics and the second half of the class PK makes sweeping generalizations about other countries. Do not take this class or any class taught by PK.
One of the worst professors I have had. Has no clear lessons and doesn't actually teach anything valuable about IR.
This was my second class with PK, and if you can take a class with him DO IT! 1817 and 2817 are two of my favorite classes at Cornell. Learning from him is a joy, class related or on life. He values learning from students, even with his mountains of expertise. He pushes students to think critically, and challenges us. Cornell is lucky to have him.
PK's class is a must-take for Gov majors. While it can be challenging, his vast expertise makes lectures fascinating. The workload is heavy, but unstuckstudy ai was a game-changer for my study prep. Definitely worth the effort!
PK is one of the greatest professors Cornell has to offer. The class is unique, it is a case-study style course he developed at the Harvard Business School. You read and study each case and you are graded on the frequency and quality of your participation in class. You also learn how to write a 30/35 page research paper throughout the semester.
Professor was good. The readings are important for the test. The TAs will be extremely helpful.
Must take a class with PK during your time at Cornell. Incredible lectures and you can tell he cares about more than teaching the material. Teaches you how to think, how to navigate learning, and how to pave your own path through academia.
Really enjoyed the course! Discussion sections were extremely helpful in helping me understand the readings. Get ready to read!!!
If you're an incoming freshman who has a background in IR or is interested in it, this is an amazing course that I would 100% recommend taking. If you're a gov student who wants to take this course just to get it over with, I'd wait until sophomore year. There's a lot of reading, so if you're interested in what's being taught, it's so much easier.
Professor Katzenstein is clearly experienced and knowledgeable in his field, but more importantly does his very best to engage the class during his incredibly interesting and informative lectures.
PK is a great professor, always challenging you to think critically and grow as a learner. He clearly appreciates the students and TAs, and 1817 was a fascinating course. Highly recommend taking one of his classes; you will come out a better student and thinker than you were before.
Great course. PK is incredibly knowledgable in IR, and constantly encourages participation and debate. I learned a great deal. Genuine interest in IR helps, as previous knowledge/interest of current events will help you understand material much easier. PK is a funny guy, and keeps lectures entertaining. Lots of reading, but don't pass up 1817.
Professor Katzenstein is a very good teacher. You will learn a lot while also being thoroughly entertained.
This was the greatest class of my Cornell experience thus far. The lectures were incredibly interesting, and although it was stressful at times ensuring I was participating enough (it's graded), it was rewarding when I did contribute to the discussion, and no other class I've had at Cornell has had such active participation. PK is the best.
Truly one of the most inspiring and enjoyable professors I've ever had. If you have the pleasure of taking any of his classes, be prepared for each lecture. Do the readings, give your thoughts when asked, and try not to let the 35 page research paper at the end of the semester bog you down! Again, it's a lot of work, but it's SO rewarding.
Def take a PK class before you graduate.
One of the best resources at Cornell!! He's truly one of the most knowledgeable people and makes it super accessible to have discussions/talk about world events. Also keeps lectures and discussion super light-hearted and humorous!
PK's classes are always the most difficult but most valuable classes I've ever taken.
This is the second class I've taken with PK. As expected, the lectures are amazing, inspiring and forces you to think differently. The work is heavy - readings and a big 30 page paper at the end. I wouldn't recommend taking this course along with other heavy classes.
Brilliant lecturer, lots of student engagement, difficult research paper.
PK is the best professor I've had at Cornell. He makes lecture fun and engaging, challenging us to think critically about current events using the course materials. The class is a lot of reading, which are the primary focus of the papers and exams. However, 1817 is so rewarding and I would highly recommend for anyone interested in foreign affairs.
PK is an amazing lecturer, and 1817 is a fascinating class especially if you're interested in IR. It's the hardest for the four intro gov classes (tough to get an A), and many students put off taking it until their sophomore year. I'd say that if you're very interested in IR, definitely take it freshman year. If not, take it as a sophomore.
One of the best professors I've ever had at Cornell- always was so excited to come to class. He is hilarious and engaging. Take a class with him before you graduate!!
Tough but rewarding class, I found it challenging because of the amount of material we had to learn. Genuinely improved my reading and writing skills. PKs a great professor, he's incredibly knowledgable and funny. TAs are great.
Overall, PK is a brilliant professor who is personally invested in his teaching and expects the same from his students' learning. The class is very theoretical, sometimes to the extent that you question its usefulness. I found the class's TAs to be frustratingly unhelpful and their grading schemes unclear.
I respect PK a lot, he is very brilliant. The lectures dragged on a bit sometimes, but his class material is interesting most of the time.
Tough grader, ton of readings, but one of the most intelligent and engaging professors I've ever had at Cornell. Lectures and readings could be dense but he has a supreme grasp of international political theory (literally wrote the book on several subjects). Highly recommend.
Would highly recommend taking 1817, really enjoyed the course and PK's lectures. Definitely a good amount of reading so take that into account, but all things considered was a great course
Lectures are always a review of readings for that week and are very engaging. Protect this man at all costs. He's a national treasure.
PK is probably the most brilliant person I have ever had the honor of meeting. This class was not easy and I did struggle at first, but with time I began to settle into the course. This class has a lot of reading, but it is 100% worth it to be in his lectures. The TAs of this course are also spectacular and very helpful under the guidance of PK!!
PK is an amazing teacher and provided a great class. Learned a lot about international relations and the current world through the readings and discussions. I think I did improve my reading and note taking skills from the assignments. It is a great class to learn a lot and be challenged, it is rewarding!
Took PK's class for a CAS distribution requirement, but ended up with it being my favorite course this semester. The amount of content was pretty substantial, but it definitely taught me to think about politics differently. Will probably take another Gov class in the future as a result.
PK is one of the best professors at Cornell, and 1817 is one of the best courses; you will go out of this course wishing you could take it again.
Incredibly inspirational.
Amazing lecturer and sweetest man ever, but so so much reading. Do not take this class if you don't have a lot of free time. Also, grading depends a lot on which TA you get, and the number of A's given out per section is limited.
PK truly cares about the class and about you -- readings are long but interesting, lectures start with 10-20 minutes of current events. Absolutely would recommend, whether you want to pursue international relations or not.
I've never had a professor so well versed in his field of study
Took 2817 after taking 1817. 2817 is the easier one. No exams but equally engaging. Go to lecture!
Absolutely recommend this course - PK is probably my favorite professor at Cornell so far and he's a genius. Everyone has something to learn from his lectures and an added benefit is how genuinely interesting the course is!
PK is a knowledgeable lecturer. If you bring up a subject of international relations, he almost certainly has an opinion or answer. Be aware of the "labs," those can be easy to forget.
PK is the absolute GOAT. Take this if you want to think critically, to combine intellectual perspectives, etc. It's clear that he's a genius, and I predict that what he talks about at the end (parahumanist/post-newtonian thinking in IR) will revolutionize the field. Ultimately, it's not as hard as people say. There's a reason he's a legend.
The lectures were super engaging. There is a lot of reading every week in this class. There are only 2 exams (one prelim and then the final), 5 papers which are due every other week on a Friday which typically involves ethical usage of AI and heavy analysis except the 1st writing assignment. Active Participation in sections is required. Be prepared
Great professor
Incredible teacher and very interesting course.
He's a very seasoned and likeable professor, however his lectures might be boring at times and drag longer than they need to, they usually don't really talk about the readings (which are too many to count). Participation is also very important, the TAs took very long to grade our papers and exams, which was inconvenient.
The best. PK is the best. A genius.
Amazing teacher showed clear dominance of the topics and world topics.
PK is really funny and while I can't say I'd recommend everyone to take him like some people on here, I would recommend if you're interested in IR. This class can sometimes be frustrating due to the TAs (my TA barely gave me any feedback on my papers) and the vagueness of the writing assignments. Learned a lot. Be ready for the 8am Friday lab.
I would recommend taking this class for all public policy majors who need to fulfill the GOVT requirement. It's definitely a class that will give your other PUBPOL classes a lot of sense. Lots of readings, but it will make you think outside the box.
Easily one of the best and most interesting classes I've taken at Cornell. The course material is fascinating and PK is a great lecturer. Everyone interested in international relations should take this class. Sure, there's a lot of reading, but you'd be remiss not to read; you learn a great deal and everything is intentional, no busy work.
PK is the only professor who will actually try to engage with his students, he cares what we have to stay and challenges us to be better students and people. 100% recommend taking his class!
Katzenstein has lost his touch a little recently. He is clearly still a brilliant scholar, but he read a lot from the slides and rarely covered the extensive amount of reading we had to do in lecture. The required GenAI component of the essays is also ridiculous and completely misses the point of an intro course.
I was initially a skeptic. Who is this PK guy, and why do people treat him like a god? I understood almost immediately after the first day of class. PK's teaching style is tough, yet charming. He challenges students to think both rationally and outside of the box. He actually encourages students to share their thoughts about the world to each other
Meaningful and inspiring!!
PK is an iconic professor and could be doing literally anything anywhere else (Harvard has tried to poach him) making a ton of money and only working with grad students, but he's here teaching intro gov classes and actually caring, which is rare. He makes our crazy high tuition a little more worth it, so take a class with him while you still can.
Professor PK is quite simply exceptional. GOVT 2817 is a rare course in which the professor elevates the material from “interesting” to genuinely compelling, and PK consistently does so. His lectures are clear, well-structured, and rigorous, but not inaccessible. He can take complex political concepts and explain them in an intuitive way.
Brilliant professor, the first half of the semester is the hardest part, don't be discouraged if you're struggling! The readings are truly fascinating and his lectures are fantastic. I plan on taking another class with him! Would definitely recommend, but go into the semester knowing that you'll need to work.
