Only if you like Ben Stein
almost got caught cheating watch those take-home tests
I unlearned addition, along with all my other mathmatical skills.

The most boring professor ever! Can't teach calculus for his life.
Put me to sleep even when I went into class wide awake - BORING!
Great teacher, explains material well.
This guy sounds exactly like ben stein, Bueller, Bueller? Buleller...?
good teacher. will definitely learn something from him
He goes fast... assigns homework before it is covered and then doesnt cover it in class unless questions are asked about it. Doesnt totally understand the material himself, so how are you expected to understand it?
Horrible teacher..doesn't know how to teach bc he doesn't know the material..if u ask a question in class, it will take the entire class to answer it..take a different teacher
do NOT take him... he cant teach worth anything... he doesnt understand what he is teaching.
Kohn looks just like the guy from ghostbusters: can we say EGON!! good news he doesnt fail anyone, just gives out all D's. Because of him i thought of dropping my math major.
He never seems to test on the material in the book or the stuff he goes over in class. He is a nice man but not a good teacher, and you have no idea how you are doing in the class. Take a different teacher if you can!
really nice, and if you study a little bit you can ace the tests. he really wants you to do well. if you don't study then prepare to get a c...
if you go to him for help he's more than willing to answer your questions...tests aren't too bad, boring teacher though.
Don't take him if you can avoid it. He had the most confusing lechtures ever, and I don't think he even knew what was going on. His tests are too long and don't cover what was learned in class. Avoid him as a teacher!
really boring, doesnt know how to teach because he doesnt know what he is saying half of the time
assigns homework before it is covered in class. really boring and confusing. very disorganized thought pattern.
he looks like ben stine and sounds like him too. he helps you only if you email him or go to his office hours and he doesn't teach well.
assigns homework problems he has trouble answering himself, random explanations that don't matter....don't recommend him
Helpful if you go to office hours. Recommend e-mailing him questions. Graded on homework. A little confusing but gets easier. Tests basically all from homework problems. Just pay attention to what problems he emphasizes.
his hw problems are harder than his test problems, very easy tests, however I'd probably rather stick my finger in a blender than go to his class......very boring. And for some reason his eyes are consistently closed
Really nice guy, fair grader. I am terrible at math but go to office hours and he's very helpful, and I like math alot more now than i ever used to. Lectures are boring but if you pay attension and do all the homeowork it's not bad
nice guy, but very unclear. I went to office hours for help and he just confused me further. Lectures are too confusing and he picks really complicated examples to do in class. Email him homework questions it helps a little.
Cool, funny, and helpful guy. Class was hard, yes, but if you work hard, you will get an A.
apparently he's a good calc professor...but do NOT take him for discrete math. worst choice you can make, and i promise you i'm not the only one who thinks this. class started with 21 ppl, ended with 9 by the end of the semester.
super awesome guy, always starts off class with some weird joke or tidbit... but DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND CALCULUS!!! He knows what he's talking about, but he just doesn't know how to teach it so we understand it. and do the homework!!!!
nice guy, tries to make u understand and always available for help. requires class participation which can get annoying. tests aren't too bad but definately require a lot of studying and review of the hw
Love him! Really easy, straightforward tests, and always gives extra credit. Also the nices professor you'll ever meet.
Take him! One of the best math professors at JMU. Also easygoing, funny, fair, and so so nice.
Requires class participation, weekly homework. Three tests and a final. Tests are straight forward. Require studying! Go to office hours and he will help you understand material. Better discrete teacher than most.
He's such a nice guy, and class really isn't that bad, but his tests are SO hard. One good thing is if you go to his office hours outside of class he his really helpful and will even add a few points to your test! Final was insanely hard.
Don't take him if you can help it! Do the homework, go to him for office hours but he usually just makes it less clear for me... Tests are hard, doesnt really like to go over the homework in class so go to office hours!
Great teacher for discrete math. Explains everything in a creative and organized way and is pretty funny sometimes. Usually only grades 1 homework problem a week, gives extra credit opportunities, 3 exams and a final.
Professor Kohn was one of the best math teachers I've had at JMU. While the final was hard, he explained things very clearly. I had never taken calculus before and he made concepts understandable.
very weird professor. however he is good at teaching. i feel like i learned a lot from him and i would recommend him. test are a little tough but nothing out of the ordinary for college.
Worst professor I have had at JMU. I love math and have even gotten A's in my 231 and 232 class. I would get problems on the tests right except for one number and he would mark the entire thing off. He gives practically no partial credit and his extra credit after tests are impossible to get full credit on. Avoid him if you can
he's a good teacher, consistent homework, hard tests but nothing too serious. Attendance isn't mandatory but GO TO HIS CLASS! I made that mistake and now I don't have any idea what's going on, and I'm failing. he's funny in a whacky way and he starts class with a cute, random tidbit. nice guy, take the class if you are motivated/proficient in calc.
I've had him for two semesters. He's great. Is very happy to offer assistance outside of class, and answer any questions you have about test questions/homework. His class isn't easy, but you will learn a great deal from him. I look forward to a third semester.
This professor is amazing. He doesn't look at notes while he teaches-- he knows the derivations, and can explain them in multiple ways. His humor is ... well, a good attempt.
This guy seriously sucks. I was in his class last semester but dropped it within the cut off date. He still insisted on giving me a WF. He gives no partial credit on quizzes and tests and he has no clue how to teach math. He is weird and incomprehensible. The worst teacher at JMU teaching the worst subject. Don't even think about taking his class.
I have had Dr. Kohn for both 236 and 237. He is a really good teacher. He always starts class with a joke. His class is difficult, but he is very helpful in his office hours. Take him if you like math.
He was a very nice teacher, JUST DO YOUR HW!!! His tests are hard but they eventually get easier as you begin to understand how they work. Overall a very good math teacher.
Kohn is a great professor. His class follows a pretty standard routine. Not incredibly interesting, but he explains things clearly and is good with answering questions and clarification. If you need help, definitely utilize office hours. The tests are definitely not easy, but overall, it's a good class.
Kohn is an okay professor. His tests are somewhat hard but if you do the homework and the reading you will probably get a decent grade. He gives reading quizzes which are easy A's and He only grades one homework problem and you only have to do 6 and he rolls a die to see which of the 6 he will collect. Overall he is fairly good.
He is a great teacher. His jokes are dry. If you don't attend class, you might be at risk of missing a quiz and he doesn't take late hw. Homework is worth 10 pts each. His class wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the book that he's so proud of. The book is the worse even though its only $20 and it has many errors. He is a great lecturer though.
If you care about this class, you will do fine, but don't expect and A or a B without a lot of work. It's fast paced, and the tests are difficult. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! And use the study guides he gives for tests, they really do help. He will extend hw deadlines, you just have to ask. No attendance policy, but you should go every class if you want any hope of doing well. 3 tests and a cumulative final, and homework grades. Not an easy professor but still do-able.
Class was fairly hard, but Mr K is really chill. The problem is he thinks everybody can get the concepts easily so he goes very quickly. Not much homework but tests are pretty hard.
Kohn is alright. He's somewhat entertaining and he's pretty clear when it comes to teaching the material. There are plenty of worse professors than him.
He is not that bad as a teacher, but his book is VERY hard to understand. Its so hard to get what he is teaching because the book doesn't explain anything. AND he calls people randomly.. which SUCKS when you don't understand the material.
BEST teacher. He's so funny. He is very clear as to what he's teaching. He gives assignments almost every other day but they're only 6 questions and he grades only 1 by rolling dye. Test are easy. I would take him again if he had another class. Met some really cool people in that class. If you don't understand his humor, get out, you wont have fun.
Professor Kohn is awesome. His lectures are easy to follow and assignments, while frequent are fair and prepare you well for tests. Study guides are very clear and accurately reflect exam content. You'll absolutely work for your grade, but in a fulfilling way.
Peter Kohn's lectures are all over the place and they can be very confusing, but if you have any questions he will help you a ton in office hours. You have to work hard in this class for a good grade, even with the curve. I wouldn't take this class if you don't have any calculus background.
He is a good teacher, but I have to retake the class. If you have questions, go to his office hours!!! You gotta practice this stuff, unless it comes easy to you. He's a nice guy and he made some awkward funny jokes in class. His tests are his study guides, but still do the HW!! He collects 10 random problems from the HW.
Professor Kohn was an ok teacher. I had taken calc in high school so I knew the material, yet most of the students had a tough time understanding him. Tests aren't hard as long as you study and there is homework every night. Very goofy and interesting guy, if I had to take math again I would try to find another professor.
He is very nice and funny. He cares about his students and will help you with anything. I wouldn't recommend him if you haven't already taken calc. He talks for a long time and really likes proofs, but the homework is easy and he doesn't give very much. He assigns about 15 problems and only 6 are required, then one is chosen by dice to grade.
Hands down one of the best math professors I've ever had. I took this level course in high school, but his lectures on the material were so much clear than what I already knew. His passion for mathematics was honestly so inspiring to me, he truly thinks of calculus as an art form.
IF YOU DIDN'T TAKE CALC IN HIGH SCHOOL DO NOT TAKE HIM. He uses a textbook he wrote that is very confusing. Different terminology than you've ever used. Tests aren't too hard but the class is. Homework every night that you have to do that is hard and time consuming. Don't avoid him but I wouldn't recommend him either. He's sweet and funny.
I went to his office hours 5-6 times throughout the semester and was not helped a single time. He does an awful job explaining tough concepts, and he has little patience with those struggling in his class. If math is not your strongest subject, I do not recommend taking him for anything.
I would not recommend taking Dr. Kohn because he isn't passionate about what he teaches. If you ask him why he does something a certain way he will just say because thats how you're supposed to. His tests are way to hard for the material, he barely gives any partial credit, and he doesn't answer questions.
Condescending. Rude. Not passionate. These are the words that come to my mind when I think of Kohn. I'm not surprised that JMU hired this professor since better universities know better than to hire someone not interested in the subject field. Grades way too hard. I've done well in math classes but his have halted my success.
Kohn shows little passion for Calc 3. His lectures are confusing, and his tests are ridiculous. Definitely choose a different professor. It is obvious that Calculus is difficult, but half of the class dropped! That should be an indication of how he conducts a class. If you're stuck with him and you don't have a "C" by the drop deadline, then drop.
A goofy, oddball professor who unfortunately cannot teach you in any capacity. You will often find yourself listening in lecture seeming to understand the topic, until you go home and look at the textbook chapter and realize it's much more complicated. Be ready to teach yourself and study for the tons of 3 question quizzes which define your grade
Kohn is a decent professor, very lecture heavy. The lectures can be dull sometimes, and attendance is not mandatory. He grades out of 18 short quizzes, no final or homework grades. He doesn't teach much honestly, and leaves it up to you to put in the extra work. All in all, Kohn's class is decent, and if you took calc in hs, you should do fine.
Kohn is a very nice and kind professor. However, he explains things in a convoluted way and just moves on when the class is clearly completely lost. I got an A, because I retook the quizzes during office hours, and because I was going off of my high school knowledge of PreCalc. I didn't learn much, and I largely guessed on the quizzes.
Above average teacher. Cares about his students, but shows no passion or enthusiasm about the class. Does a pretty good job of explaining concepts but lectures can be very boring. Tests are pretty hard but he lets you bring a notecard into each test.
This is by far the strangest class I've taken at JMU. Your final grade is based solely off of 18 mini quizzes, with 3 multiple choice questions each. He allows 18 retakes for the semester, and there is no final exam. The textbook was unhelpful, so the recommended homework is not worth doing. Overall is an easy option for 231.
Don't take him unless it's a must. He's rude and really doesn't care about his students, at all. There have even been times I've attended office hours and left feeling more stressed then before. On the bright side, he does answer all questions you may have. You MUST study for tests. I didn't for the first one and did awful but did well on the other
Not a fan. responding to questions, he tended to talk down at students and made me feel pretty lesser than. I feel like his grading is extreme and he often marked things off without offering feedback. His tests were OK, not great not bad, and the final was brutal. The homework took many hours to complete. I would NOT reccomend him for this course.
your grade is based on 18 quizzes that are 3 question multiple choice. I definitely could have done better if I studied more but overall not too difficult of a class. The textbook is not worth buying and the homework is confusing and not worth doing. Study your notes and memorize concepts and you'll be fine
Do not take this professor unless it is an absolute must. The in class lectures rarely help with the tests and homework and are very boring. He never answers his emails and doesn't really tell you what you did wrong when he takes points off on exams. Highly recommend taking another professor if possible
All recorded lectures and slides are posted to canvas which is helpful if you miss class or need to go back and review a topic. There are 3 midterms and 1 final which are worth 90% of your grade, but you can use a notecard. Homework is worth 10% and is through WebAssign. Overall great professor, and the class is much easier if you go to class.
If you attend class you'll likely do ok. However he hardly will go back and explain things. He really doesn't try to help you during office hours either. Weird humor, overall if possible avoid taking hime.
Look, it's math. It sucks. Show up to class and take some notes. All the quiz and test questions are taken directly from those he does in class. It's really not that hard at all.
Professor Kohn is a nice professor who cares about students and provides a clear syllabus. Two exams plus a final, about ten mini-quizzes (given once a week), and you will do well if you read the assigned textbook chapters and complete corresponding homework problems. Material is more word problem- and logic-based rather than equation math.
I'm glad that I took this math class, but sometimes there were random tricks on exams and quizzes. Normally the study guide for the weekly quizzes and exams were accurate, but there would sometimes be problems on them that we didn't mention in class which was stressful. Overall, if you study for exams and quizzes you'll be okay.
Kohn's class was great to take and easy even if math isn't your strong suit. I came into the class having already taken intro calculus with an A. Textbook wasn't needed except for the group project. Go to every class and take notes. Every quiz/exam is from class. Only critique is the final exam didn't reflect the most emphasized parts of the course
Calculus II is a tough class, but Dr. Kohn always tries to start his lectures with a funny joke. He's very interactive and you have to participate because he calls on you using notecards. Sometimes he does get confused but someone in the class is always there to correct his mistakes. I find his lectures and PowerPoints easy to understand.
Pretty hard class. Show up every class or you will be behind.
Dr. Kohn was a good professor. He is helpful in class and during office hours. His class is organized and has a sense of humor. He's not really a tough grader and gives partial points. The only thing I did not like about this class was the fact that exams are 90% of your grade, but other than that I'd take him again.
Super interesting class.
Dr. Kohn is a funny and good professor but his grading relies way too heavily on tests. The three tests for this class (including the final) make up 90% of your final grade, and the many homework questions assigned aren't worth anything and can take a bit of time to do. He's a good and funny professor, but just get ready to study A LOT for tests.
I think he is retired but if he comes back, he was just okay. His class was the kind of glass where I had to chug a Celcius just to stay awake. He does care about his students. Exams are fairly hard but you can kind of predict what he is going to ask. I would not recommend him
