treats 200 level class like 123892380198 level
really hard class dont take
very tough class, he grades papers tough and works his students hard
he is really hard
he is a horrible prof
what can i say... the man's a genius
I loved him even though his class was hard
Do the work; get an A. Pete is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
he made me hate the English language. I didn't gain much from the class.
Very interesting, very intelligent. not difficult if you study and go to class
Very hard for ENG 101. However, super great guy and very intelligent!!
Super great guy
Koper is the best. His class requires some actual effort, but it's worth it.
very helpful and cares about students
Very intelligent and nice but expects you too know too much in detail and his lectures can get boring.
Had him my freshmen year. Hardest teacher ever. I hated him at the time. He was very helpful though. I still don't know how to write very well but he gets to know his students and five years later he still knows my name. Makes a huge difference.
This class is a lot of work, but it's certainly not impossible. He really knows his stuff and if you ask for help, you'll get it. One of the best professors I've had yet.

one word: aaaahh!! The only thing amusing about this class was him dancing to Cajun Music!
STAY AWAY SERIOUSLY! After taking him the 1st semester of my freshman year I thought I was too dumb for college! He expects you to study 2 hours a night... lots of memorization and papers. Can't get better than a C... at least in my class! SAVE YOURSELF !
Bad.....I hate this teacher
Dr. Koper is a great teacher. Treats college courses like *college* courses, not dumbed-down remedial courses for people who shouldn't be in college.
Horrible!!! Don't ever take this class!
COMPLETELY AWFUL!!! This is the worst teacher I have had and I have had probably 50 of them by now. Get out while you still can! NO joke. I am a smart guy, don't assume i'm dumb. He wasn't hard, just terrible.
Too high expectations, ridicules skills acquired from high school. Very big hard ass.
This guy is ridiculous. No matter how hard you work on a paper he will cross out most of it and say it isn't relevent. Hates opinions. Expects you to think like Aristotle and learn everything he knows in one semester when he's studied it all his life.
All I have to say is good luck! The class itself is intimidating, although Koper himself is nice, he just expects a lot out of his students. Definitely be prepared to study! This class makes me not want to be an English major anymore!!
He is a hard ass. You write a paper, and all he does is cross it out, and tells you what he thinks should be in it. Trys to help, if you fail a test, but doesnt make himself very clear. Exxpect to study for two hours or more, and then you will get a C.
Koper is a nice enough guy, and can be funny if you appreciate a dry sense of humor, but this class was really hard. I can't count the number of nights I was up until at least 4 or 5 am writing a paper for his class I had started at 1 in the afternoon.
He's a nice guy but if you value your GPA at all stay out of it. Everything that has been said is true. Just stay away.
I love this man, he is challenging and funny. If you don't like him, it's because you cant take his criticism or his jokes. He tries to make you better. I am horrible at writing, and i did great in his class. You have learn from what he tells you.

Very hard class, he tried to help, but I still didn't understand. I worked on papers about abstract concepts for over 8 hours only to get everything crossed out. Alot of grammer work in the begining.
Unless you really really really like literature.. like you are DEVOTED to it.. be weary of this class.
It is true he is one of the hardest teachers in the english department. Crossed 3 out of 8 pages in my essay and I got a C, I had the fourth highest grade in the class. Tests, extremely difficult, you better LIVE English to take this professor.
Don't take him unless you are interested in the material or like to read.
Dr. Koper's demanding nature will not only make you a better student but a better person as well.
Hardest teacher I've ever had. When you write your papers, he only wants it the way HE thinks it should be done. Only take if you need, and plan on lots of reading along with lots of frustratiion.
He's a nice guy, hard grader, thinks he knows everything. He's **** and **** but doesn't know it. Take this class with a grain of salt.
The first class he said "be prepared to spend 3 hours a night on this class"... he wasnt joking. It's time consuming and very difficult.
Koper was very unclear in his explanations of his assignments and very hard on people. His degrading comments on papers made you feel worthless. I witnessed him drawing a redline through every line of my roommate's paper.
Insane, but a decent guy. very picky on papers. Once made me redo one because my last name was to far away from the page numbers.
Tough teacher. Was better for having had him.
Koper is a tough teacher, but is VERY VERY helpful. There's no question that the class is a challenge, but if you put the time necessary into it and ask questions when you don't understand something, you'll be fine.
This guy is a **** and doesn't care what students have to say, he jumps to conclusions and gives no one the benefit of the doubt.
RUN RUN AS fast as you can, and dont look behind you, also girls watch out for this one. Hard class, hard papers, hard test, took points off me, because I spelled words wrong, when he only gives a hour for tests that should take 2 to 3 hours to do
Knows what he is talking about. However, fails to teach the class his knowledge. Grades extremely hard. I would not ever take him again.
GET OUT NOW! very conceited... can shove grammar down your throat... long memorization lists on grammar! took 3 days straight at the library... run or hide under a tree from this guy!
He knows his stuff, its a challenge though but you come out feeling like you actually learned something and it wasn't all a waste of time. Would definitely recomend him if you are into that whole actually learning bit.

SO HARD (for me at least) Non-stop reading; two -four ancient greek books a week. Dont take this class unles you really love lit, or are an english major.
Stay as far away from this man as possible, he is jerk and grades way to harsh. Too much work, reading, and stress for a 100 level course. Do yourself a favor and never take any of his classes!!!
I really disapprove of a professor who believes that a freshman is supossed to be able to write an award-winning essay worthy of the New York Times and grade you accordingly. ): He is helpful if you ask, but still expects you to read and write WAY beyond mortal human ability.
I'm a freshman, so I was a bit intimidated coming into this class. It's tough, and there's a lot of work involved, but you really know you'll learn something when you come out. He sometimes tends to ramble, but the material was relatively interesting to me and he knew what he was talking about.
I have never hated someone more in my life, he wants to make me kill myself and drop out of college

Koper knows his stuff. His class is good for the mind, if bad for the GPA. I'm afraid reading all the angry comments from people with bad grammar only made me like him more. The exams are killer, but if you actually care about the subject, I highly reccomend him.
Koper is a great teacher- he's hilarious and actually cares about his students but he expects way too much out of them. No matter what I did in this class I would never get above a C. He drills grammar into you, is a tough grader, and will most likely make you cry at least once.
Koper is by no means an easy prof, he's probably one of the hardest in the university. If you are just a flat out bad writer, I don't reccomend him. But if you have a moderate degree of skill with the English language he can really help you. It's a hard class, a hard prof, but a great experience.
I wanted to drop out of school because of Koper. He's horrible, demands too much and is just a bad teacher. He talks about nothing and makes you feel stupid. Also, he gives half credit for essays on the exams because he WANTS everybody to fail. He had a support group on facebook thats how bad it is!
Wow... what to say about Peter Koper... He is a really great prof, although ridiculously difficult. If you don't mind the damage he'll do to your GPA, definately take his class. Although the class may seem less than enjoyable, you'll really learn from him. Peter Koper is just... inspiring.
This guy would scold the class for not participating, but shortly thereafter, he would interupt people when they were talking. He thinks he knows everything about everything, and anything that contradicts his beliefs are automatically wrong.I have never seen so many notes on a paper before taking him.

The class is really hard but Koper is a rally god teacher who actually cares about educating you. I dont know how I passed this calss but I do know that I leared a lot from it to take with me in life.
Too demanding, very anal. No room for our own opinions, even though many of his differ from respected scholars on the subject. Had to be corrected by a student over who killed Agamemnon! Read, go to class, and REGURGITATE EVERYTHING, WORD FOR WORD, THAT HE SAYS and you should get a B. An A is nearly impossible. And I actually liked the material.
Koper is likely the best prof I've ever had, and one of the toughest. He's a wonderful person and professor. He knows more about ancient Greece than anyone I've ever met, and he'll force you to learn a ton about it as well. If you can take the heat, then definately take him at least once.
Seek and you will find. Ask and you shall receive. If you keep that in mind, you have the potential to receive a B in this man's class. He was the greatest and most influential teacher that I have ever had. Do your mind a favor and take one of his classes.
I thought that Koper was very helpful when he was asked for help. If you showed a geuine interest in learning he would do whatever he could to help you understand the material. His essays and exams are graded very hard, but showing improvement is also cons
Koper is into sentence fragments and clauses. Picky on written papers. Expects you to learn a packet of 8 pages within a few class periods with just random words such as is, the, and. Demanding teacher but helpful when your unclear of things. Cannot read his handwriting. No new techiniques when you don't understand the first time.
I felt that this class we very difficult, but Koper really wants you to learn and in the end I think most of us who tried really hard did learn something.
This is likely the hardest class I have ever taken!Koper is probably the best professor I will ever have, and the hardest. Very demanding but he will go to any length to help you understand. Take advantage of study sessions even if you are just struggling a bit. This class will take you very far!
Professor Koper is awesome! This class was a 6 credit class and yet it was so interesting. Sitting through 2 hours at a time of discussion on a great book can be boring with any professor, but Koper tried to make it interesting. I didn't go to him for help, but he gave plenty of opportunities to do so. Overall, I did well in the class.
Luckily, the Honors department isn't forcing Centralis scholars to take this class anymore. This class had absolutely nothing to do with my major, yet I had to sacrifice studying time for those classes to do well in this one. Koper himself is very demanding but intelligent. You will become a better writer after taking any of his classes.
good teacher but expectes to much out of first year freshman
This class was extremely difficult, even for a strong English student. However, it was worth it all!! Those who try hard to the very end, have all improved writing by a lot! He always tells jokes and random stories...he will do anything to help you, he wants you to do well. If grades dont matter to you, but how much you learn, take Koper...
Fantastically intelligent and sharply witty, also great at what he does (hacking and slashing papers with extreme prejudice/red pens.) If things do get dull though, you can always go to sleep, he'll just joke about it sometime in the future. In fact, fall asleep the first day of class. Right next to him. Trust me, it'll make for good laughs later.
I took Koper's Ancient Lit class...YEARS ago...but he is one of the few professors from CMU who still sticks out in my mind. More telling, he is one of the only profs who taught me material I still remember. The class is VERY hard, but Dr. Koper makes his expectations very clear from day one. Plus he is entertaining as hell!
Great teacher, probably one of the best I've had. Class was very hard, but I learned a lot. I would take Koper in the future just because he taught me so much.
He feels the need to keep students late after class to talk to them about their papers or their class performance. Then the student can't get in a word edgewise! Classmates and I have been kept back over fifteen minutes after class several times so he can listen to himself talk. Way too much work for any student who ever wants to graduate.

This guy is awesome. He will make you become a great writer (or at least a better one).
Straight-forward. Pompous
Best professor I ever had. That most students dropped his class says more about those students than it does about his class. Koper refuses to dumb down his standards, and I respect that greatly.
So I like how this guy did a study on this website. Personally, I think this website is beneficial, but I guess not everyone does.
i'm a 38 year old professional editor who took his classes years ago. his advice is still in my head. best teacher, all around, that i've ever had.
Do not take this class if you expect some reading, a paper, and an easy A or B for the work. koper teaches you and expects you to learn and do well, he does not give out grades and goes over material thats self explainitory. he loves what he teaches, knows a great deal and makes class interesting with funny jokes. If you want knowledge and enhanced
Great Prof!
Hard grader, but I learned a lot. He tells a lot of jokes in class that are not funny, which made me laugh because he tried so hard. Expect to work hard in this class, but if you take it and put effort towards it, you will learn a lot and can get a decent grade. I Tried really hard on most of my papers and got a B.
Horrible teacher. Shouldn't be there or still teaching!
A great teacher. I remember once he agreed to work with me outside of office hours because my schedule didn't work. Anyone who doesn't take a class from him misses out and anyone who badmouths him, has gotten by way to easily up to that point. If you work and improve you get the grade you deserve.
He is a horrible professor. He thinks that english is the only thing in the world to learn about!
Since junior year I was an editor of one of the top high school newspapers in the country. I had never recieved lower than a B on any essay or paper I have ever written. UNTIL I met Peter T. Koper. He crushed all of my hopes and dreams in one semester. Thanks Peter. Possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. If you have him, drop.
This man is inspiring. He makes you want to learn everything there is to know about everything. He is extremely knowledgable about the subject matter. His class is not easy, you have to work, but it is totally worth it. I learned so much from him! Also, he forces you to become a better writer. Seriously, take a class from Peter Koper!
The first professor here that actually cared about my learning. Koper can be difficult, but only because we've become too used to getting A's for substandard work deemed to be a 'good effort'. I did not do much more work in this class than I do for others, but I got a lot more out of it. He loves his subject, and cares about his students' learning.
Hey was a very challenging teacher, but he really cares about you learning the information. He has a way to learn the information (that works extremely well) or you fail. I've never worked so hard for a C in my life. I couldnt tell you the countless hours he spent working with me on the material. Best teacher i've ever had and the worst grade haha
Hard to get an A in this class. But you can expect to learn a lot. He is extremely helpful.
Koper is probably the most intelligent professor I've had at CMU. His class is VERY hard, but if you go to him in his office hours, he's very helpful and understanding. He expects a lot out of you. He'll probably rip your first paper to shreds, which I think is a little overdone, but don't think your grade is hopeless from that alone. Very fair
Ego is very big. He thinks that every high school didn't teach anything and that it was a waste of time because his way is the only way and thats that. Somewhat helpful, yet doesnt tell you your grade till after the final. Bad teacher, don't take unless you like being looked at as a 3rd grader.
I'm 33,been teaching for 10 yrs.Koeper is mainly responisbile for my success.Up until his class,I just slid by with papers, all that changed when I took Koeper's class.I'm glad I did. He made me a better writer,a better student and a better teacher. I'll never forget what he said,"It's hard because it's supposed to be,otherwise everyone would do it"
peter koper is a terrible teacher. He does not help you and speeds along to fast in class....I hate COD fish
He was awful. I went into him 2 to 3 times a week and he would help and I would do what he said on the next paper, and then he would flip- flop and say that I wasn't doing it right and come up with a different way of writing. I did however understand more grammer then I had ever learned in high school. Avoid taking him even though he is nice.
Koper is the most challenging teacher i've had in my 4 years at CMU.He makes sure you know the material and reviews often. He expects that you work hard and your grade reflects the amount of effort you put in.He was always willing to help and never assumes that a student just KNOWS the material. Hes a great prof and looks like Robin Williams in Hook
Koper is one of the most difficult teachers ever. He will break your writing down and cover your papers in lines. If you want an A, don't take this class. However, he is a good person and it's hard to hate him despite the fact that he is a TOUGH grader. I guarantee you will not get anything higher than a C in his class.
Best professor I have ever had. Very tough but I actually learned something. Dont go in expecting an A but if you want to improve your writing and reading comprehension Koper is the man. He is very funny and always accessible to his students, phone, email, etc. I highly recommend Koper for any class you can take with him.
This man is completely unreasonable. His expectations are far to high. The course load is ludicrous, and he expects perfection. This is a pass or fail class. I do feel like I learned something, however I would like my grade to reflect that. He also goes on pointless tangents...
writing improved, but extremely frustrating!!!!
At first he seems like a very inspiring man, however, that will quickly dissipate. He wants perfection and if you stray from his interpretation, you will be marked down further. He's a stickler for detail. Expect lengthy and mostly irrelevant answers full of analogies, pointless tangents, and a pompous attitude, "check." Do the reading, "10-4."
Koper's a very hard prof, but is truly intelligent and knows his stuff. Show up to class, do the reading, and proofread the papers, and you'll do fine. People say never gives A's, but I got a B+ for a moderate level of work. He's very helpful, and if you go to school to learn and not for the sake of the grades, he'll be one of your favorite profs.
He expected you to know exactly what he wanted without his guidance. Then when asked he gives contradicting advice every time. He criticized students in class and had no grading rubric, so the grades received in this class were purely subjective and if he does not like you there is no chance to get an A or even a B.
If you want to fail and retake Eng 101 then sign up with this professor. The highest grade in our class was a B-, and that student went to the teacher almost every single day for at least an hour reviewing and studying and such and she only recieved a B-.
Capricious grading habits, if he does not like you then you will not do well in the class. Avoid him at all costs.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Best and most helpful prof. I've ever had. If you actually want to learn, then take him. This is not an easy A.
What can I say other than he's hard, but it's because he cares about YOU and wants you to be better at what you do. I really think he was one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life.
This professor is AMAZING. Not for slakers, bums or stupid people. Sean Connery of professors. Very helpful,if you ASK. Fantastically knowledgeable, funny, patient, and challenging. Sure, you *must* study for the tests and he's tough on your papers. He will make you a better writer and thinker. And that's what college is about!
I graduated from CMU in 1994. Math/Eng. I had Dr. Koper for Classical/Greek Lit. I can honestly say that it was the toughest class I took at CMU. At the time, I had alot of contempt for this prof. He worked me/us hard. I had to study many hours. All I can say now, almost 20 years later, is THANKS. Dr. Koper was/is one of the best at CMU.
15 yrs later, I still remember both professor and material...that tells you something. I sweated blood to get an A, but no one can say I didn't earn it. I learned a ton(he has a gift for making ancient literature fascinating), but also, earning an A in such a tough class boosted my confidence immeasurably. I thank Dr. Koper for that opportunity.
This class was a joke. Pete just talks about how interesting he is and thinks without ancient lit. you are nothing of a person. Sure I liked the reading, that is why I took the class. Not to hear his manifestos about "if you want a fascinating convo meet me and my friends for a drink on thursday nights". Its his interpretation of material only.
Dr. Koper is enthusiastic, energetic, and extremely engaging. An uncompromising historian, his classes are excellent for English students or anyone with an interest in improving their critical thinking and writing skills. The class on Greek literature was my favorite college class.
