Knows his stuff but teaches incredibly fast...a frustrating prof if you are not a math genious
No Comments
He is very very smart...so if you are not very very smart, he will no doubt make you want to scream once in awhile. I failed the class, and I got a 26 in math on the ACT...lets just say he teaches way to fast to fully understand.
Good teacher... MATH IS THE COOLEST SUBJECT EVER!
He takes things slow and grades pretty easy, but he does not offer any extra credit
he's kinda tough...
I hate Math I failed 041 the first time. I took 141 with Lampe and got through the first time with a good grade. If you show up to class, study for exams, and ask for help you will be fine. The big thing is show him you actually care to learn.
BORRRRING
I passed his class with an A. He does teach very fast but if you stop him, he will slow down and go back.
good teacher.works well with the students
easy to understand, very helpful
he teaches pretty fast so you have to pay attention but if you ask him for help he will help you. if you do bad on a test dont worry because one of his main concerns is that youre making progress and care to learn the material and not just to get the grade.
Lampe was a fun teacher, but there was a lot of material that was not covered in our course material that he would tell the class about. He taught fast, but he would slow down if you asked.
Awesome professor. Received D's in high school math and got a B in 141. Explains things very clearly to your level, and extremely willing to help you.
I would not take this professor again. He moved too fast through the material for me. If you are not good at math I wouldn't take him. He has a good personality and is understanding. Tests are hard.
Best math teacher on campus. Is tremendously intelligent, and explain things as much as you need. Do every chapter review and you shouldnt have many problems. If you want succeed in math, take Lampe.
Great teacher, crystal clear, tremendously understanding. The best math teacher on campus! Take him if you have the opportunity for Math 141!
I don't understand how there are people on here that actually liked this professor. He teaches everything really fast, he doesn't offer any extra credit, only tells us about maybe two things we'll need to know out of the section, and then blames the class when everyone fails the tests..
Loved this professor! Hes crystal clear and gives plenty of opportunities to seek help and ask questions if you have trouble-and helps you until you get it 100%. He's easy to understand and he always keeps the students' point of view in mind. His tests are difficult but fair. I suggest doing at least some of the homework if you expect to pass!
He does not state what he wants you to do for quiz, he expects you to know the material. If math is not your strongest subject I will suggest you not to take his class ever and I mean EVER! He does not explain the work he wants you to learn it on your own. for example, he wants you to read every packet that he assigns and get it right away.
Lampe is a nice enough guy, but his lectures are extremely boring, and do not really explain the material well to people who have troubles with math. If you do not already understand the material or don't dedicate time to visit him during office hours, good luck!
Pretty good professor, really personable and is pretty good at teaching the subject. The fact that his tests are difficult is a downer, but no mandatory attendance, and rarely assigns homework
Lampe was extremely clear and used good examples to help students. Always taught very thoroughly before moving on the next section. Do the assigned problem sets and you will understand the material. It's a hard class, and you need to invest time into it. I did and pulled off a high A.
Stood up at the board and proved a bunch of theorems for us then expected us to prove theorems for homework. I had no idea that's what Discrete Math was, I thought that was for 301... He then put the proofs on tests where most students could not get them and failed, then he blamed us for the failures. Awful teacher.
I do not recommend this teacher for anyone who is the least bit shaky with math. My advisor told me this would be an easy course (math 140) but it has proven more difficult than my previous algebra class. Never hands back homework and makes very little sense. The text book is even worse, all word problems and no examples Stay away from this teacher
This professor expects you to know a lot when coming into the class. My high school teachers made it more easy to understand then he does. I would not recommend him to anyone who struggles with math.
This professor is ALWAYS willing to help, and will usually stay after class to do so. He finds ways to make math more interesting, (like applying probability to poker hands.) Friendly and professional all around, he will treat you like a fellow human being instead of just a student.
HATED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PROFESSOR. He was absolutely horrible at teaching math and all he did was compare math to sports but he never actually taught what was needed for the test. He moves very quickly through things. He blames the class when everyone does poorly but grades truly reflects his teaching. I never struggled with math till his class
I only had him for half of the semester, and my grade dropped a whole grade. I DO NOT recommend him. I hated going to class, and was really boring to listen too. he is a complete nerd.
Bad at teaching material for test. Only gave examples and never taught specifically how to do it. Very hard to keep focus as he bored the class with his not so funny humor...DO NOT TAKE HIM
Did not explain things well at all in class. And when it was time for him to explain something, it was not even on the test. DONT TAKE HIM!
Gives vague examples that are significantly easier than anything on the exams. Expects students to know a lot of material coming into class. Doesn't hand back homework or explain grading. If you struggle in math at all, avoid him.
Peter Lampe is literally the only math teacher who has actually explained math to me. I took the class 5 days a week which really helped, and I already took Pre Calculus. If you do the homework and you do it until you understand everything, you will be just fine. Ask a lot of questions! Also, bond with him with his Star Wars Nerdiness.
I thought Lampe was a very good professor. As long as you put in the work outside of class and practice the homework, you will do well on the tests. I worked hard and got an A.
Lampe is great. He explains really well and does a lot of examples. He's also pretty funny and nice. Make sure you go to all classes and practice problems really help. Homework is pretty easy, and exams are alright.
Lampe expects too much of out of his students. Requires students to use Excel even though it is not a prerequisite.
Expects far to much, as if we should already know what is being taught. Excel is also a huge part of the class homework, nothing to do with book unless you do homework on your own... which is honestly the only way to pass, which I did not. Not a very good teacher if you struggle in math.
Lampe is not a complete waste of a teacher, however he expects his students to know and use Microsoft Excel almost to an expert level. If you are an excel expert take Lampe's class. If not, do NOT take this class. If Lampe had half a brain he would not expect 19 and 20 year olds to be excel masters. Lampe quit making your students use excel.
You might as well just read the book yourself and not go to class. You do not learn anything in his classes. Does not cover what is on tests and grades extremely hard.
Only four tests and three worksheets that are extremely hard. If you fail one test, good luck getting your grade back up. His worksheets are extremely difficult. Not even my math tutor could figure them out. If you take his class, expect to go to SI, extra tutoring, and office hours to be able to pass.
In his class you can't use a calculator. He doesn't grade homework so your entire grade for the class is based off your test scores. If you're a bad test taker don't take him. His office hours are also at really inconvenient times.
I've been a fairly average math student my entire life, until I took Lampe's course. We never used the book, is tests were the biggest part of the grade and extremely thorough and difficult, he expects you to be an IT major with the excel homework he assigns. Terrible office hours, I do not recommend him for anyone trying to pass math.
Tough tests but a really great professor. You will need to work hard and go to SI sessions if you want to do well.
NOT ALLOWED TO USE A CALCULATOR IN CLASS!!!! It hurt's to much which that and his lecture patterns are set by days that don't make sense. It's painful to be in class and his tests are nothing like the questions for his homework at all. I do not recommend taking him at all because of this.
Well I'm going to be blunt, if you are bad at tests you won't pass. I'll be honest I can't take math tests. I am really bad at them and I barely passed. He assigns homework but doesn't take it for a grade. He only graded like a few assignments but he will warn you beforehand.
Peter is a math teacher that from my own personal experience doesn't know how to explain something when you don't understand it. Multiple other students have experienced the same issue with him. I would never recommend him as a teacher, ESPECIALLY if you struggle with math.
Very easy, can't fail if you go to class. Walks you through each homework. Homeworks at the end of each chapter along with a test, no final however. You can retake 1 test at the end. Works through problems on the board, but doesnt mind if you are working on problems out of the book in your own time.
Professor Lampe is an awesome guy to have for math. If you're like me, you don't mind math, however some professors have made it harder than it needs to be. Professor Lampe explains everything I've ever had a problem with, and makes it clear. He also is a little bit of a nerd, but also really funny. You really should try and get him as a professor!
I personally don't like him but that's just me
Peter is one of my favorite professors of all time. He is excited about math and he explains the material in a relate-able manner so that everyone can understand him. This class is tough, but he gives enough background information and keeps it interesting enough to the point where I honestly loved going to class every day. 10/10 would recommend!
This class is difficult. He definitely knows his stuff but he can be all over the place sometimes. We only have homework due every exam day but it takes hours to do. The exams aren't too bad but it's very easy to make mistakes. Go in for office hours, he will assist you. He sometimes lets us have work days where we can ask questions.
He's an okay guy, he tries to be funny and likes puns a lot. He hands out all the homework you will ever do at the beginning of class and doesn't check anything. Doesn't provide materials online at all. I had a hard time in this class because all he does is lecture and a lot of times he doesn't even talk about the material we need to know.
I took Lampe more than once I liked I him so much. This class wasn't easy, but he is available to help often. He wants you to succeed both in the class and as a person, and does his best to help you in doing so. He has a great sense of humor and is just a fun guy to be around. I would definitely recommend Dr. Lampe.
He is always available for extra help. Before each test there are 2-3 days of review. There is only one required homework assignment per test. He doesn't allow calculators, so the questions tend to be easier.
Profesor Lampe was a very difficult professor mainly because he was very lecture heavy and his explanations made absolutely no sense. Homework is given out at the beginning of the year however, he only looks over 3 assignments. This makes your grade largely based off of non-calculator tests. Overall, I would chose a different professor.
Unless you are a math genius, this class is really difficult. Do not wait to take this class, if you do not remember anything, he won't go over it unless you ask. He will make the homework extremely difficult and will only give cryptic hints. Material in book is only vaguely covered.
Math 254 is definitely a difficult class, but if you've got Lampe, it's not too bad IMO... Well, if you show up to every non-review class, that is. He doesn't spend much time going over what he's already lectured on, so if you miss more than a couple classes, you're gonna have to work very hard for a good grade.
Math has always been a subject I have enjoyed and understood pretty well until I got to Lampe's class. He teaches two chapters at once. He tells you to do all of the work problems from each section in the book and doesn't teach half of whats in there. You never know what to expect on his exams. Overall just an awful professor. Would not recommend.
Missing one or two classes will be extremely hard to make up. Expect to do 30-50 HW problems every day to keep up, he will not go through examples in class. Four midterms worth 60% of your grade, final worth 20% and 20% HW. Does not give feedback through email, and hardly helps with HW in class. Does not do reviews or study guides. Don't take!
He's tough. But he is do-able. You won't have a calculator, and you have to basically memorize the unit circle. Office hours are a joke, go to SI and a tutor. Go to Laurentide for help, nobody else will be able to help you. Tests are problems for the crazy amount of practice problems he gives, so look over those before tests.
Please, if you are not very good at math, do not take this class with Professor Lampe. I've never been a stellar math student and every exam is harder than the next. Calculators are off limits in this class and for the final review, we never went over a review packet and its worth 20% of our grade. If you aren't good at math you won't pass.
You have to stay on top of homework because he doesn't go over how to do every kind of problem in class. If you do the homework (odds) you can ask questions during review class which he has before every test. He also has office hours every day and there's also SI. I thought his lectures were good.
Get ready to do 60 homework problems a night. Theyre not graded or anything, but the only way you have a chance of doing well is to do these. He doesn't go over any of the test problems in class you just have to hope you study the right stuff. Teaches 2 chapters at once its the most confusing thing I have ever experianced
I am normally fine in math, but when thrown 2 different chapters at the same time, along with not actually being taught everything in class, along with HW that isn't mandatory but is the only way to know anything in the damn class lets just say I would never take him again. He won't even give out study guides for tests for Pete's sake.
Lampe is the hardest professor I have ever had. He doesn't assign HW so your entire grade is based on bi-weekly exams. I found myself having to get a tutor multiple times a week just to understand the class because his lectures were so poor. He also does not give extra credit or round up any grades. It feels as if his tests are meant to trick you.
absolutely awful. will not make appointments for you outside of office hours even if youre struggling. you dont learn anything and he still blames half the class for not trying hard enough. your grade is based on exams, which will destroy your grades/gpa if you struggle on exams or in general with this course. this man will make you miserable.
Professor Lampe is a pretty decent professor. He tries to make the student engage in class, enough that I'm sure you won't fall asleep. The way he teaches lecture makes sense to me. We have an online textbook but I never use it, the only time you would read it is probably for extra practice problems. There's weekly homework unless it's exam week.
One of the best teachers i've had! really explains things and gives you real life examples of what you are using in class. Always helps in office hours, and gives you a second chance on some exams if you are willing to show him you will put in the effort. very helpful.
he didn't really teach sometimes. for one unit, he just had everyone work in groups through a packet. we all know ain't nobody talking in the groups we just copy off of the only person who knows what's happening. he was extremely annoying and ridiculous to work with through misunderstandings. he insists every mishap is everyone else's fault.
A very underrated professor in my opinion! He is one of the most understanding professors I have had so far. If you really are struggling, be honest with him and he will try to accommodate to the best of his abilities. He is also a very funny man with dad jokes. Truly interested in his students background and their upcoming which made me feel great
Peter made me enjoy math a little more. Homework was assigned one web assign per class, all was doable. He is a super chill, funny guy. Class was not mandatory but you should attend class because he doesn't post any material on canvas. His office hours were in person during covid so that was very helpful.
one of the worst professors ever class lecture were not good homework was impossible never had one problem we did in class never on the homework assignment deadlines were like random days even some on Saturday nights like really just a bad professors says he cares but does not. So unless you really love a huge up hill battle DO NOT take this class
He is a very fast pace professor so make sure you show up and listen during class. Most of the grade book is Webassign HW so make sure you do those. Very nice and funny. Make sure you study for the exams as he doesn't allow make up or extra credit.
Currently having to retake Math 139. Lectures don't match up with webassign homework at all, he pulls the info out of nowhere. Due at weird times, some at 10pm on saturday. Quizzes are longer than other math professors. Skip class and you might miss the graded group assignments. Little to no material on canvas. Would not take again.
Math is not my thing, quite frankly I get most questions wrong- but quizzes (calls them Exams) he gives points for HOW you did the problem. You may have gotten an answer wrong but he will give points if you set up the problem correctly. Office hours are always a great option, lectures get boring and I get sleepy, overall great for a math professor!
This professor is a good guy. He teaches very fast and skips through some important things during lectures. You will also receive hours of non graded homework every night. If you are someone like me you will not do this homework or do very little of it. If you don't do it you will fail. He wont give review guides. He hardly goes over any answers.
He truly is a nice guy, but the class is bad. I missed a lot of class due to being an athlete and he was not very easy to reach out. His office hours are also at the worst possible time, making it hard to attend. He takes a long time to grade quizzes and tests. Also does not really teach just expects that you know what is being discussed.
Overall solid professor. Did not grade hw so hw was not required except a few, so your grade was based off of a few hw and tests, so if you are bad with tests, dont take him (at least for calc 2). Tests were straightforward. Wished he graded hw since it would make you do hw and put less stress on the tests. Final had some EC though. I recommend him
Professor Lampe is really good at communicating mathematics. While he doesn't allow calculators, he makes the questions easy to do without them and does not take many points off for calculation mistakes. You will need to study outside of class to do well, and he expects you to memorize a lot; if you are going into STEM, he will set you up nicely.
Peter was great, he has good knowledge of what he teaches and clarifies any questions. I've never been good at math so this class was harder for me, but overall the work isn't that bad. Lots of webassign homework, 3ish quizzes and excel sheets to accompany the exams. He also saves you points on exams if you show you know kind of what you're doing.
Isn't very clear with his teaching and loves to tell personal stories and side tangents that are super long and don't make sense to course material. Very confusing.
Doesn't actually teach the material, just gives a bunch of examples and doesn't really explain how he got there. Likes to answer questions in riddles and tell random stories about his life.
barely covers any of the actual materia and just gives a bunch of examples without actually explaining it, will teach differently than the questions given on the homework making it impossible to do it without looking stuff up. terrible professor DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
doesnt properly explain how to solve questions just gives the same examples phrased differently. won't post answers keys for some of the reviews and says to make our own questions. yaps for majority of the class about personal stories and gives like 15 mins to take a quiz. do not take if you actually care about your grades.
This class was very easy overall. Basic high school math. Mr. Lampe has a great personality and is a really good human. Tends to over-explain things as he gives many many examples. Reviews are just as the test are just different numbers. Cares and encourages questions! Has a normal amount of homework for any math class.
If you are not good at math, I do not recommend him. He either over explains a question or does not explain it at all. He will also make you feel dumb if you do not know the answer to a question. Office hours are a way to get some help, but not much, as he seems annoyed when you ask for questions to do. He also is not quick at answering emails.
Dr. Lampe is a great professor. He truly cares about his student's success. He was open to taking questions and going over things again. With extensions, if you asked kindly he would give them. Study guides were just like his test, and the quizzes were always harder than the test, which made me study harder for tests, giving me better grades.
So glad I took him, he talks a lil slow but I kinda need that. He tells a lot of stories about himself and incorporates them into math problems which kept me entertained and more willing to learn. overall great awesome guy and I highly recommend him if ur a lil slow at math
Peter was by far one of the worst professors I have had, he is VERY hard to follow. Your grade consists of 60% for exams, 20% for homework, and 20% for activities. He comes in and starts writing on the board with little to no explanation/context. He is very hard to follow, making it hard to comprehend what you are learning. DOES NOT ANSWER EMAIL!!!
Personally I was not fond of him. He goes through lectures super fast and barely explains anything. I emailed him a while back asking what I could do to bring up my grade and he never got back to me. Overall, I didn't think he was a good teacher.
Mr. Lampe is genuinely one of
He is such a kind teacher. He really tries to connect with the students and he's so funny. He wants people to do well, and he explained the material in a way that made sense. I'll miss his class he was the best!
He explains the material pretty well, gives lots of examples. His examples are long though, and by the end of if you don't really know what he was talking about anymore. He'll go on tangents during lectures that are somewhat entertaining. Overall, he is a good professor, and I do recommend him for this class.
Dr. Lampe is a very nice guy. He can go off on tangents that leave you forgetting about what you were originally discussing. I will say if you are not the best at math, steer clear of him as sometimes his explanations are not great. If all you need is a review of the content, he does a wonderful job. Homework and assignments prep you for the tests.
Only three exams the whole semester, the final exam was a lot different than all of the other exams. You are expected to read the textbook and learn from it. He throws random problems on the board and does not make sense.
