HORRIBLE TEACHER !!!!!!!!!!!! STAY AWAY FROM DOESNT TEACH OR TRIES TOO ALWAYS MAKES MISTAKES QUIZ EVERYDAY GRADES VERY HARSHLY !!
Dr. Lanagan is one of the most helpful and sincere professors I have ever had. He is always humble and willing to help. He has an open door policy, he encourages his students to seek help from him during his office hour, and he even makes appointments to help the students who can’t come during his office hours. The weekly quiz is only one or two
wqs astronomy......so hard stay away from this teacher
He's a nice guy, a little socially awkward, but a decent teacher. I took the astronomy lab with him, we did a couple cool things that he made up himself, like taking pictures of the moon (we each got to keep our own copy!) No quizzes or tests, just labs- and he's always there to answer your questions. It's easy to pass if you don't skip.
He is a good professor and usually answers all of your questions but this class is very hard with practically no review for the exams, and lots of notes to study not knowing what will be on the exam.
The first test was enough to scare quite a few away. His class is a nice time to nap because its all lecture and power points. I'll probably get a C...hopefully a B.
This is a very hard teacher, but only because he expects people want to learn about the application of the ideas of the class. Need to read the book and lectures to pass the class.
The lab is pretty easy. Just pair up with a partner that will work as hard as yourself and the teacher will help you through any questions you have.
Great teacher! The class is challenging, but very interesting. There are weekly homeworks and quizzes. The tests are pretty hard. As long as you study and keep up with the lectures, you will get at least a B.
Great teacher. The labs are pretty easy, if you pay attention. Of course, attendance is mandatory. He is very helpful in answering questions and helping with the labs. He pretty much answers questions with another question that makes you think, and in the end... you answer your own question. Highly recommend this teacher and class.
Mr. Peter is awesome! He is brilliant, however, he doesn't make you feel small when you have questions!
He seems to really love Astronomy. I found that he would answer any question me or a classmate had in his class. I also took him for Ast 104 in the previous semester, and found him extreamly helpful. On Fridays, some classmates and I would have a study group and he would come down and answer any questions we would have.
Dr. Lanagan is one of the most passionate and helpful instructors at CSN. This class with such complex concepts is both challenging and rewarding.
this professor is great, makes the material very interesting, go to class, pay attention and do the work and you will learn alot
There is actually someone out there that thought this teacher was hard? Drop out of college now if thats the case.
He is an amazing teacher I was very sick the semester I took his class and he was very willing to help make up what I missed. He genuinely likes astronomy and will answer any of your questions without talking down to you. If you need an extra science class take him.
Wonderful teacher with passion for his field. You will learn a lot and have an easy time doing so. His jokes are priceless. I did put that the book is used often, and it really is, but you can manage an A in this class without buying it so long as you have any amount of internet skill and show up to class. Will take for PHYS 151.
Bad jokes run long and deep... That is the worst of this teacher. He really takes the time to care about his students and makes sure that they understand the concepts. DO THE HOME WORK or you will not do well on the tests. Drops lowest scores. If you fail you did not really try. Attend the classes to learn the most, test comes from lecture.
The labs are detailed and take some time, but if you follow the instructions step by step, it is an easy class. I got an "A" and missed one class and got a zero on the assignment... If you fail this lab... DROP OUT OF SCHOOL... Oh, and the jokes are just part of the class...
The jokes pretty much make the class. Some fairly easy homework assignments, 3 tests, and a final. Show up to the lectures, study for the tests, and you'll be fine.
GREAT teacher! VERY HELPFUL and very good at explaining the material. i LOVED this class, i would HIGHLY reccomend taking physics from him. He's hilarious and easy going, yet professional. I wish he would teach physics 152! Arg!
He's a nice and funny guy, yet professional at the same time. Always willing to help out those who need it. However, he'd be a better teacher if he broke things down in simple terms rather than presenting them as a big picture. We've a tutoring student who explains stuff way easier and quicker. Drops the one lowest score on each set of assignments.
Any AST 105 should be a fairy easy course but of course Dr. L makes it complicated and a dread. He is rude when a student ask him for help, and can will lecture a good 30 minutes on the "history" or "background" to the lab which doesn't help at all once it comes time to do the lab. CSN offers the course with better instructers. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Takes him ages to grade exams / homework. Lectures are boring & his examples make no sense.
Not the best teacher in the world. Every class is the same; powerpoint lecture, drones on about it. Maybe I just got really lazy because I didn't feel motivated in this class, but it is just a really boring class. Easy enough to pass, but definitely not the most exciting professor you'll ever have.
Class is fast moving, but he provides notes so you can pay attention. Scores Homework, In-class, midterms, and final. Drops lowest scores in each... STUDY the how and why things work and you will do fine. Thanks for a good class Dr. L
he is funny. kind. helpful. nice. loves his job. doesn't mind breaking hard ideas down for you. too bad this is my last class with him. too bad more teachers cant be as nice and helpful as him.
He is a funny, and compassionate guy! He really cares about his students and their success. He was one of the best instructors I have had at CSN. I would diffiantly take another class with Dr Lanagan. He made the class intersting+so fun.I only wish I would of taken a longer semester with him.I could of learned so much more. Take his class!
He is a grt and caring instructor.I learned alot in his class.I thought he was funny + made the class fun. He is fair+wks with you+ replies to all emails. He truely cares about his students+their success. He really put some grt stuf out there 4 us. Discussion board replies a must.I would love2 take another class with him! Take his class!
Great teacher, very helpful and will take time to explain any questions on the labs. Labs are easy, if you can read you should not have many questions. Read the lab instrustions pay attention to his explanation and should be an easy A.
His Astronomy 103 class is the best! I had a lot of fun and loved his jokes:) drops lowest score..
One of the funniest classes I've taken at CSN. He is so entertaining, and he won't keep you bored. He is extremely nice and funny and the class isn't too hard(but you will have to try a bit). I love this class and so will you. Lanagan is probably one of the coolest profs out there. Maybe I'll take the next level AST 104 yes this class was that good
Prof. Lanagan is one of the best professors at CSN, hands down. If a student is willing to put forth the effort, he will gladly work with them as much as possible. He's very patient, funny, and intelligent. Lectures are clear, organized, and fun to attend. No tricks or sneaky things - just good teaching. Pay attention in class and you'll do great!
Dr. Lanagan is a great teacher! This lab is hard if you doon't know your algebra but everything is clear for expectations & assignments. He's good updating grades online & available for help if needed. You can drop the two lowest grades but plan on attending every class. He's quirky and has goofy jokes too.
Pretty cool guy. Not a difficult class. The class was relaxed and easy to follow. He made the hardest parts of astronomy easy and he got me very interested in following astrophysics, the problem is I'm an Econ major and about to transfer. If you are taking this as one of your first classes pay a lot of attention and you will get an A.
This teacher was nice but he didn't teach the material you needed to know for the homework. He would assign a homework online then teach you everything that was on it later that week. He is unnecessarily strict about tests and his tests are very hard to study for. He offers the notes online as study guides but most of the time they don't help.
I played baseball while taking this class. He is nice but class was difficult but if you are used to being a full time student then he might be easier for you. There is a lot of homework and online assignments. A lot of paying attention in class and math involved. If you are good at math and know how to navigate the CSN web for coursework.your good
I was really disappointed by the end of the semester with this professor. I really like him and he is such a nice guy but a few others in the class agreed with me that the material on the exams were not taught or only just scratched at the surface. The class was hard even though I studied. I would not recommend him but hey astronomy is cool.
fav. science teacher!
Really nice professor, he is really excited about Astronomy. The class a little hard. There is a lot of math involved on the homework assignments. If you're taking notes focus on what he is talking about rather than whats on the screen since he puts all the slides on Angel and you can view it and study from there.
You can tell he's passionate about the subject, which made the class more interesting. Clear about topics and assignments, and answers any questions asked. Would recommend taking this prof.
I like his how passionate he is about astronomy, but for the exams no one knows what to study because the notes are just blotched together. 6 easy homework assignments. 4 tests. quiz every day in class.
Dr. Lanagan is extrmely enthusiastic about what he is teaching, however the test and quizzes were very difficult to study for. The information given in class was fairly broad whereas the tests were very specific. He does off extra credit and will drop your lowest quiz and test grades. No study guides. Attendance will effect grade.
WORST professor EVER!!!!not responsible at all. test are very hard and you must go to testing center to take it. A lotttt of work to do every week. NEVER take his course again!!!!
For everyone out there that has had a hard time with this class, a simple remedy would of been to READ THE BOOK, everything he talks about and tests on is IN THAT BOOK class is easy if you want to learn. Yes, the professor does try to trick you on some test questions but it is because he wants you to THINK things through, as thoroughly as possible.
Great class and a great guy. Dr. Lanagan is very thorough, well organized and helpful. The tests can be a bit challenging in spots, but they're fair. And if you've read the book, done the homework and studied your notes, you'll be fine. I would definitely take another class with him.
Very interesting class, but his tests are very difficult. Lots of trick questions. Class is mandatory for daily quizzes. At the same time though he does work with you. dropping the lowest test score.
Amazing professor, loves to helps students the best he can and ensures that you have the time needed to complete and turn in any/all assignments.
Dr. Lanagan does a great job at teaching astronomy and explains things as best he can. Always be prepared for class. Attendance is mandatory, as there is a quiz daily, and his tests can be difficult. If you study, read the textbook, and familiarize yourself with the information discussed, you will have no problem.
Though the class isn't easy, Prof. Lanagan is organized and helps students. He knows how to explain concepts and has many examples. There are 10 quizzes and 4 exams. The lowest quiz and test are dropped. He gives partial credit if you try and goes over every problem. He knows what he is teaching and wants to help. I would recommend his class!
Dr. Lanagan is very knowledgeable and always eager to help students understand difficult concepts.
Dr. Lanagan is very knowledgeable, assistive, and has a quirky sense of humor. I like him as a person, but couldn't stand his class! Be prepared to WORK for your grade. Tests are very difficult and very hard to study for. There's daily quizzes, six homework assignments, and some extra credit. I wouldn't recommend this class; a lot of anxiety!
Great teacher, straight forward and very clear and eager to help if you need it. The quizzes are easy and he always gives you an opportunity to get points, lots of extra credit offered, you need to study hard for the exams though and the book is useful for that. really great teacher, passionate, nerdy, funny, and.. cute in a nerdy dad kind of way
He is a great teacher!Very nice & helpful. 4 test, 6 HW assignments, & 20 some quizzes. Don't be scared by the # of quizzes, most are just for showing up to class & doing the in-class, group assignment; the rest are 2 question quizzes & even if you answer them both wrong you still get 50% for being there. He drops the lowest grades(tests, HW, quiz)
I took the Astronomy 103 course to fulfill my degree requirements. It is not a subject that really grabs my attention. However- It is quite obvious that Dr. Lanagan has a true passion for astronomy, and his enthusiasm for the material shows in his lectures. He makes a potentially boring class interesting and enjoyable.
Great class. Homework does not help for the tests. READ READ READ each chapter carefully!
Dr. Lanagan is one of the best professors I have taken. I have taken him for both his 103 and 104 courses and both were the highlight of my semester. Dr. Lanagan makes it so that students of every background and knowledge level can understand the material. His grading criteria are crystal-clear and all of his notes are online via Canvas.
Professor Lanagan is great. He genuinely cares about his students and wants you to pass, as well as learn the information and do well in the class. He provides great discussion posts that engage you in the topic. You do not have to be a genius to pass this class. As long as you complete all your assignments and try your best, you will do well.
The exams are awful. 12-13 questions each with 10 of them being multiple choice but the last 3 questions are written and its worth the majority of the exams. i wouldn't recommend taking his class.
Dr. Lanagan is a quirky, funny, super nice guy. There are 4 50 question mulitiple choice exams and he drops the lowest one. Quizzes are every day basically just to see if you paid attention in the last class. Homework is all done online and is mostly based off the textbook reading, but the textbook isn't really required to get a good grade.
Professor Lanagan has been great this semester. His class is a little dry if you aren't into it. All of his lecture slides are online so you dont have to copy notes in class. The tests aren't too bad but they are weighted the same 100 points as all of the homework so even if you bomb a test it doesn't hurt too bad. 2 Easy extra credit assignments.
Peter has a great quirkiness to him that makes class enjoyable. I went in thinking physics was terrible but he turned it completely conceptual and interesting. Physics is still hard but you can tell he likes seeing students succeed. He loves astronomy so get on his good side and talk about super novas or black holes
Professor Lanagan is a cool guy. He cares about his subject matter and does a good job of making tough information understandable to people without amazing math backgrounds. There's an easy quiz every day, so show up to class. (And if you show up and take good notes, you won't need your textbook at all. :) ) Ample excred opportunities. Nice class.
This class is SOOO difficult to follow! The professor has a powerpoint on the screen yet NOTHING on his exams has anything to do with the notes he posts. Instead of going off his note he tells long stories that are hard to keep up with. If astronomy does not interest you this is not the class for you! There is a TON of math involved in this course.
I don't want to be a hater but very boring. If you don't study straight from the book for like a week before an exam good luck. Homeworks and tests have are short but difficult. Know the material or fail.
He assigns a "pop" quiz every class. This is to make sure that you show up, so attendance does matter. He will drop the lowest exam grade and a few misc test grades. Unless you are a morning person and this topic interests you, I would not recommend taking it in the morning, I had a hard time staying awake. He's very passionate about science.
Prof. Lanagan really loves and knows about his subjects. He's dad-joke funny and tells interesting stories. This class wasn't as easy as I expected but I did learn a lot more than I expected too. This class has made me look at the universe differently. He is a great professor if you try and pay attention.
Dr. Lanagan is awesome, to get an easy A you just need to study and read the book and his notes as well. he dropped one of the lowest scores even if its the final.
Professor Lanagan is straight forward with all the material. He provides great notes. One just has to go to class and practice problems to understand the material. The class is mostly algebra, so if you are not good at algebra then you might want to study and practice a bit more. People should not blame a good professor for their lack of effort.
I really like this guy, his way of teaching is very clear and easy to understand. He also provides lots of extra credit opportunities which have helped me boost up my grades with ease. He has even inspired me to pursue the study of science more often. 10/10 I recommend taking a class with him!
Dr. Lanagan loves physics and it shows. He's pretty funny and makes lectures somewhat interesting. There is a homework assignment from the textbook every week, in-class activities, and a total of 4 exams which make up most of your grade. There is an opportunity for extra credit- it raises your grade by 2%
You can tell he really cares about his students and what he's teaching. The class itself is very hard and if you miss a class you'll fall behind on the notes. He has a bit of quirkiness about him and makes the class really enjoyable. If you pay attention and study you could pass.
The material was not easy but he really did his best to make his lectures as clear and concise and possible. His tests were on the harder side but they really tested on whether you understood the concepts of the work, which is really important for this course. Overall it is not an easy A but the prof made it bearable especially after going online.
Dr. Lanagan is the only reason I made it through Physics 151. Im not good at the class at all but he helped me every step of the way. His way of teaching is easy to understand and even if you dont, hell go over everything again until he knows you understand it. He is by far one of the best science teachers I have ever had and I highly recommend.
He is a great teacher. His lectures are clear. I do not recommend an online class. The exams are really hard If you take online, you will be required to use a webcam on proctor u; It is really creepy. There are four exams in total which are worth 50% of your grade. The lowest one is dopped. Homework, reading questions, and labs 25%
Gives really good feedback, posts updates regularly, and listens to student feedback. Most people disliked ProctorU on the first exam, and the professor told us we didn't need it for the rest of the exams.
He does not post assignments until the middles of the week, he gives no direction. not my style when it comes to learning from someone
I took Dr. Lanagan online this past fall after reading all the great reviews. However, I don't know what happened between now and then, but his lectures were awful. He used Microsoft PAINT for lectures! We have weekly hw that he never uses for exams and ProctorU was the worst. I had a lot of issues connecting with them I lost 1 hour for every exam.
I dont like his teaching style. Students ask him questions and after explaining it 2 times in a weird way students dont understand him. I feel that I am failing this class and he doesnt care even when I told him. I would never take him again. Tests are hard. It takes him more than one week to grade exams.
This class is easy if you read. The quizzes and tests are very easy if you read the textbook and his power point. You are expected to read about 2-3 chapters a week. All 4 exam are also proctored, so if you dont read you will pretty much fail. The professor is nice and makes sure to answer all your questions. I would take him again if I could.
Dr. Lanagan is a very nice guy, but his class made my life a living nightmare. He's an astrophysics major and he speaks like one. It's best to get clarification during his office hours. I learned better during the one on one time. The homework is between 10-15 problems, but he only grades one random problem. Tests are worth 50% of your total grade.
-tests are fickle, some are easy, some are hard -lectures don't prepare you for homework, homework doesn't prepare you for test -I say If you have to take him, it would be fine, but get someone else first -He isn't the worst grader and tries to give you points -lectures were a bit boring, but you would miss out on some information
This man is saint. He clarifies materials, gives hw so you learn difficult problems. Physics is a tough class and I'm blessed to have taken this class. Class activities are real great for conceptualizing physics. I wish I could take him for 152 but I'm transferring schools. Best advice is pay attention to all the class activities and have fun.
Easy grader, sometimes gives us more points on the exams than we thought we would. Expects you to read the textbook but I never did. Sometimes he would go off into story during lectures. Explains things thoroughly, you must pay attention though to really understand the concepts. Physics is difficult in its own way.
Do not take this professor. I only went to his lectures because there was an in-class activity due every class. I would never go to his lectures if that wasn't the case. Did not explain things in an understandable manner. You have to teach yourself, and he never gives practice exams so you never know what to expect. His class is a gamble.
Took him because of great ratings, but was VERY disappointed. His lectures were decent, but the homework and exams were not. Lecture barely helped with homework. Exams(4) were 13 questions:10 mp (30pts), 3 written (20,20,30pts). Exam averages were around a D or F. Got one error on one written and someone who barely answered it scored higher thanme
This is literally the hardest science class. It's test heavy, like weekly quizzes and four major exams. If you do not read the textbook, study the quizzes and ESPECIALLY study for the exams you will absolutely not succeed. He's a tough grader, but he's a nice teacher. I suggest getting a study group together because without that.... goodluck.
When I took his astronomy 103 course I was initially bored with the background information about the history of astronomy. But, as he got into the actual astronomy content I found myself genuinely enjoying class!
Physics is already a hard class but never have I been this confused in any math course like I was in here. The example problems that he gives during lectures don't help on the weekly homework and assessments that are due every Sunday, and the homework that you do manage to complete, is no help for the Exams (4 total).
Does a great job of simplifying material and making it understandable to those who are hearing it for the first time, participation isn't mandatory but his lectures do a great job that you won't be able to get from reading the textbook. Lots of homework but you can find most the problems or similar problems online if you get stuck. took 151 aswell.
stop this man from teaching physics
HORRIBLE! If you don't do good on the exams, you will not pass this class. Every exam has had an average grade of 50% or lower and he is the most strict grader. We get it Lanagan, you're a physics professional... but your students are not, stop acting like we have also studied physics for 15+ years. AVOID! Also assigned homework during Thanksgiving
Exams are taken in person so get ready to study because they're HARD. Lectures and powerpoint are all online so attendance is not mandatory only for exams and they cannot be take again if you fail the exam or miss a class. He is a nice professor but heavy grader.
I had to audit physics twice at UNLV, but got a B in his class. He's quirky & will take off points for the smallest mistake, but he's not as bad as he could be. He was engaging & walked us through examples rather than just lecturing. There is no review or study guides before tests. Do the written q's first for exams, they are worth more points.
He definitely has his flaws, but this is a doable class. His lectures involve examples and group work. Double check all of your homework answers because he will take off points for forgetting units. He allows you to make a double sided cheat sheet on copy paper for tests, so work on making that before getting to the test, its good study material.
This class is a gamble but the lectures are fine. Lanagan requires a bunch of steps while solving problems on homework and exams that are quite tedious. There are 3 exams and 1 Final, one exam is dropped. Exams are split into multiple choice and three written problems. Honestly, go to tutoring if you're struggling. Reading the book helped as well.
Lanagan's class is a mixed bag - the lectures are decent, but the exams and homework can be a real grind. Definitely utilize study tools like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook to stay on top of things. Attendance is a must, and don't expect much mercy on the dreaded multiple choice.
It is nearly impossible to get a 5/5 on homework, which makes no sense. You can have all the correct work, the correct answer, and if you forget to put a parenthesis, he docks you a whole point, and now you got an 80% even though that isn't nearly worth a 20% "mistake". He also took away the double-sided cheat sheet for tests and its now a notecard
Very barebones and unrelenting teaching. Some supplemental material and resources are provided, but don't expect much else unless you ask directly. Homework is not helpful - several problems assigned, one chosen for grade, terse feedback, next to no room for error (only 5pts). Tests are no better. Activities are too easy. Quizzes would be better
Lectures are interesting. he doesn't just read off slides like some, he actually teaches. there are hws and reading quizzes due every sunday. 4 exams, drops lowest of first 3. in class he does asks questions to make sure we know whats happening. not a hard class; material was interesting to me, would take another one of his classes
Even though I got a C- I still like the professor and he is funny and helps his students.
even if you get 100% on your homework assignments and quizzes, if you do bad on a test your grade will drop. its very hard to raise your grade even if you ace assingemnts other then tests. professor too is rude and barely helps so no I don't recommend as tests are hard too
Studying is key. There are four proctored exams based on chapters from a free e-book, with weekly readings and helpful notes posted in the modules. He clearly loves astronomy and teaching. While feedback is limited, he's always available to answer questions.
Professor Lanagan did a fantastic job walking us through complex concepts and making them easier to understand. Yes, there is a lot of homework, but it's a physics class, so that's the expectation. This class is not easy, but it feels great to earn that passing grade! He cracks jokes during his lectures, too. He's pretty funny and approachable.
Save urself the trouble and take someone else -40% on assignments and hw for forgetting one unit in your math work. Tests lowk suck and hes super strict the multiple choice is weird. So much hw and assignments
