If you are a good math student take him, but you have to be able to keep up with him. As far as extra help goes it's easier to find someone who enjoys flik food.
An easy math 101 class. He gives workshops which can boost your grade. No surprises on tests. He goes over the type of questions for the test. The homework is mindless. Take him if you don't mind the yah's.

If you want to get a D or an F he'd be my number 1 choice. Do not take him. He is a horrible teacher. His teachings are completely backwards.
Excellent teacher. I do not enjoy math but he does and he has been helpful and interested in my success.
First of all, the man is German so it's "ja" not "yah." He's really easy, and it's not hard to get and A. He's a little crazy and really loves what he talks about. The class is never boring because it's so easy to laugh at him.
Being that he barely understands the english languesge hes a little hard to follow. The course should be easy but he makes it much more difficult then it ever sould be. If you have a problem in class he is extremely NOT helpful during his office hours.
dont be surprised if u ask a question during class and he doesnt answer, he is very unwilling to help and is not very nice at all. if ur looking for a challenge, take him. but if ur looking to understand math, dont.
not a fan... not a good professor
take alot of notes and pay attention and you should be in the clear. Hard to understand but if you work on the workshops he gives you in class you will be able to score high on his tests which are fair. Not bad compared to some other math teachers.
all i have to say its von cooookie plus two coooookie equals three cooookie!
unwilling to help, or explain hw and alternate ways of doing problems if ur not a math genius n want to fail miserably than this would be the way to go
Though the accent is a little thick, his teaching is fair. If you work hard you can achieve the 'A' and in the end you will feel proud. His workshops are helpful and his methods are very clear. I actually learned something in his class and I do not like math. Thank you Professor Loth!
AHH PETER LOTH cannot understanding his freaking accent for my life.....loves loves loves math too much. and will not help you out at alll
worst math teacher ever, he doesn't help you at all, if you ask questions he belittles you and doesn't explain it. i got straight a's in all math's before this, and had to withdraw because he wouldn't help me to understand. thick accent makes it even worse and harder to understand. never take a class with him
honestly the worst professor i have ever encountered. A word to the wise GET OUT OF HIS Class he will make your life hell and make you feel dumb! Offers no help and just laughs, he should not be teaching!!!
He really isn't that bad, I am terrible at math and I was content getting a C in the class, it's not easy, and you do have to work for it, but he does make much of the methods easier the way he teaches them, atleast. One of the better teachers for math, take him.
Please Get Out! I never in my life recieved below a B in math and I was failing. Get OUT of HIS CLASS!!!
i came from calc 1 with an a-...and now this guy. This guy is a BAD teacher, he should be doing research in some hidden labrotory not teaching. It is impossible for him to communicate the material with the class. also he grades VERY harshly with out comments and wont go over it with you. speeds through class as if hes readin dr zeus. DO NOT TAKE TH
a hard teacher but if you go to him for help.... he is well worth the extra time... it shows that you care... if you want an easy class, do not take it but if you feel like a challenge, go for it.... be makes you think abstractly
TERRIBLE MAN he is not out to help u get out now, ROTH is a great guy
First off, Loth does rush through everything; he does treat everything like docter suez (including complex integration, and complex limits). Then he makes things more complex than need be; we spent 4 pages covering increasing and decreasing amounts (something someone in elementary school could understand). Loth is a nice guy, but he can't teach.
In a word: Terrible. Had to drop his class when I otherwise had no problem with math. He made me hate it. Very hard to understand. Only good math teacher I've had at SHU so far was Molitierno.
Loth sucks. He can't teach, You would be better off taking math with another teacher in the department. No offense but I actually understood math and did well before taking his class. If you want help your GPA, do not take math with him.
ok, so he might be good for MA 101, but my calc class started with 16, and ended with 4, and i even dropped. awful and useless! i learned nothing. i thought i wanted to be a math teacher, but after this, NO WAY! because i will inevitably have to take him. i even wound up switching my major!!! AWFULLL! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!
Loth is clear and always available before, during, or after class for extra help. Thoroughly explains everything. Take this class to get MA101 out of the way with an easy A. Failed Math in high school yet got an A here.
Prof Loth is amazing! he writes everything in the board so its really easy to follow through.. if u wana get an A in math take him!! hes really funny and sweet!!(sometimes)
Professor Loth is a really good teacher. He gives quizzes almost every other class though, but they aren't hard. His tests are easy and he drops the lowest of the 3. Just take good notes and do the hw/work shops. If you have an issue he is really understanding.
Good for Modern College Math. Not too difficult, class was more of a logic class. Homework and attendance not mandatory - tests are only 9 questions.
hard to understand. quiz once every week. never ends class on time.
Math is math, either you're good or not, don't blame the professor. Dr. Loth is such a nice guy. His accent is not hard to understand at all. He is very fair with grading and wants you to do well in the class. I would recommend him.
I am going to give the most Obvious Quote, if ur a slacker don't take his class, its as easy as that, cuz no matter what he's teaching u miss one class it just starts a horrible snowball effect, Yes he sucks, and if ur using RatemyProf.com in General then Loth is not for u.
I've never understood any of my math teachers before and this is the first time im doing well in math! He is a great teacher and he drops the two lowest quiz grades, we have one every friday to make sure we can keep our grade up. He also goes over everything before our quizzes to make sure we understand it. Quizzes are normally 3-4 questions long.
hes a good linear algebra teacher now. i heard in the past the curriculum either was different or harder, but i love this class, and hes not too bad. he was willing to work with us when our grades were below par and made us do a hw presentation to drop our lowest test grade. if you have to take him, its not the END of the world.
dr loth isnt thatttt bad. he loves linear algebra and its a great class. either the material changed from the past when i heard it was miserable, or i just study hard, but if you have to take him for this, its definitely not the end of the world. i thought i was gna be screwed, but i have an A- at midterm. cant complain. its def dooable
He is nice, but when you see him during office hours its useless. Sign up for tutoring because your going to need to do extra work. Gives quizes every Friday that help your grade. He's not exactly fun to have but hes not horrible.
Very tough teacher. Smart, but isn't an easy professor. He will not lower the standards of his class if everyone is doing bad. Go for extra help and he will be nice.
took his art of thinking class. fair grader. TAKE NOTES! if he tells you to do certain problems as homework DO THEM. quizzes are 10 homework/class problems done on board. tests are pretty much the same. you have to not try to pass his class. do well on quiz & you'll pass. very helpful & nice
He's a nice guy, but he's got a very thick accent and is not an easy grader. I'm not a math person at all, so I found this class a bit difficult. If you're good with numbers you'll be fine. I also thought that the problems that we did in class were a lot more complicated than the problems on the quizzes, tests, and hw.
Very smart, but very hard. Avoid if possible.
Very difficult to understand. Not very helpful. Take a different prof. for this course because you will need someone to explain very clear and talk normal english to do well in this class.
He isnt a bad teacher, you just cant understand him sometimes. Do the work, do the extra work and homework and your gonna do well in the course. If you dont understand what he is teaching, look it up in the text book. It will help. You deff need the book!!
Loth is a really nice person, and he is totally willing to help! He lectures very quickly, and is not always clear with what he teaches. Some of the concepts were taught very clearly, others not so much. DO the homework, because the problems on the quizzes are exactly the same, and the test problems are similar. Definitely an interesting class!
has a harsh accent and not easily able to translate. HE IS A GENIUS though. he drops the lowest quiz score and sometimes he has workshop days which are where you just do math and whatever like talk go on your phone or even just leave the class. he is willing to help i recommend him just beware of the accent
the best this school has to offer! so smart so willing to help and its so easy. HW is never checked collected or graded unless he says the class before there are quizzes every Friday like 3 questions and its a huge grade booster. He hates phones but if you sneak it you can make it! take him you will nit regret it!!!
the best
teaches with variables not numbers. worse class I've taken. took calc senior year of high school and got a A in it but in his class can barely get a C
is a very confusing teacher, he goes very fast, you have hw every night and a quiz every friday, its way too much. he's always late to class, and doesn't make the material very clear.
He was really really nice, but he went almost too fast with the material. It was so hard to follow him due to an accent that was very thick. The weekly quizzes were something many weren't looking forward too, even with understanding the material I still did poor. I had a very hard time with the course. I wouldn't recommend if you struggle in math.
Honestly the hardest class I've ever taken(calc 1), goes way to fast and doesn't explain anything nearly as good as you need it to be explained. He tries his best but it's not got enough
Professor Loth is by the worst professor I have had. Quizzes every week. He talks 5 miles a minute and does not stop lecturing. If you need to take calc take it with anyone else. Exams are ridiculous and the problems are nothing like what you do in class. He barely gives partial credit and does not help at office hours. Do not take this class.
If you want to take/ have to take Calc 1 do not take it with this professor. He is a horrible teacher, he might be a nice person but can not teach. He doesn't check homework but every week there is a quiz which includes all the homework problems so best do them or else you will not pass. No extra credit and no curves. Tests are very difficult.
Professor Loth is a smart man. Though, that is the only nice thing I have to say. He should ABSOLUTELY not be teaching Calculus. My whole class never understands anything and is constantly complaining about him. 65 average on tests and no curve. 11 quizzes and lowest isn't dropped. There isn't even enough space in here to express how bad he is.
Prof. Loth is a very smart man and I'm not gonna take that away from him. Math is one of my favorites things and I have always done very well in math. He teaches unnecessary things that you don't need to know. He goes way too fast. He uses variables instead of actual numbers which gets confusing . Overall he shouldnt be teaching a course like Calc.
He's a nice man but an awful professor. Quiz every week on the homework and he doesn't care how you do. Started with 35 people in the class by the end 15 were left. Does not treat the class like a 101 for non-math majors.
WORST TEACHER IN HISTORY OF TEACHERS.
worst math teacher in history of math teachers. He goes against every rule of math ever existed. He states that 1+1 is 11. That does not even make close to sense. He is illeterate. He teaches you about clocks and computer surcuts and makes 0 sense and is horrible at explaining the math criteria. He actually makes MA101 hard.
Loved this professor. Sure there was homework but you can't learn math without practice. Loth would always go over the assigned homework before the quiz and there was always time to ask questions. I liked having a quiz every week. It allowed you to boost your grade up. If you did poorly, it only prepped you for the test. Also, loads of extra cred.
Dr. Loth is a confusing instructor. The course material is easy, since its liberal arts math, but the way Dr. Loth taught was awful. He talked in circles, confusing himself, making the students even more confused then when he first starts teaching the subject. There are quizzes every Friday, some are easy and some make absolutely no sense.
Terrible, professor. very confusing and nothing he says makes sense
Adored taking Professor Loth's Calculus 1 class! I took it online at 8am which can definitely be a drag some mornings but so worth it with how understanding he is. Learning online is hard and he definitely struggled with some topics but if you stay on top of homework you'll be fine. Quizzes every Friday, do the HW, it helps!!
Moving into an online format, a lot of professors were unclear of how to transition. Peter Loth was very friendly and did his best to adapt. He was good at breaking down concepts for those confused during class, and genuinely just wants people to enjoy math. He's a sweet person, and the class was relatively easy. Lots of notes and no textbook.
Probably the worst teacher I've had in my entire life. He really doesn't deserve to be a professor. Barely teachers anything then makes you take a quiz every Friday sometimes not even on the stuff you just learned. He talks in circles and doesn't even seem like he knows the material himself. Manages to make the easiest class hard. NEVER TAKE HIM!!
I stink at math. This guy did not make things any easier. Lectures that make you want to blow your brains out and quizzes every week that aren't even on the material he taught the previous class. Just an absolute disaster.
Peter Loth is a sweet man who is very passionate about math. He doesn't give a lot of homework. There are quizzes every week, so pay attention in class. The class itself isn't very hard, but it's definitely math I've never done before. I wouldn't even classify it as math. The most you'll do in Mathematics for the Liberal arts is +, -, x, and /.
Prof. Loth wants his students to like math and gives plenty of opportunities for success. Quizzes every Friday and frequent tests, but if you study its not too hard. That being said, you must work hard for a good grade. This class is no easy A or even easy B. A lot of students dropped the class early in the semester. Tests are online and open notes
With a combination of a strong accent as well as poor teaching techniques for a math class; this class is a no-go. Quizzes are more than likely things you have not learned or had on homework before, and getting any questions you may have answered is a rarity. If you have no other options but his section, wait a semester for the class instead.
you are so much better off taking college algebra than math 101. Math 101 is the randomest things to learn ever. It is by far the most difficult and confusing math class I've ever taken & I took pre calc in HS
The class had weekly homework. Somehow the homework was always easier than tests. The subjects were strange and difficult. I was struggling for a lot of the semester.
Do not take his class. If you can choose another professor, it doesn't matter who it is, just do it. Dr. Loth made us feel dumb and always seemed agitated and impatient when we had questions. He would never answer them either, and expected us to know things from other classes that we haven't even taken yet
I had to withdraw from this class because of health problems and missing three classes felt like too many. There is a quiz every week and I could never understand his style of teaching.
Professor Loth makes it extremely difficult to do well, and his teaching style does not translate when it comes to learning math. He has a strict no technology in class policy and will openly call you out Infront of everyone if he suspects you are one your phone. Weekly in person quizzes with no calculator allowed.
Yeah if you can do not take him. He is very passionate for math but he over explains things and makes it confusing. I had to watch Organic Chemistry Teacher after every lecture. You really have to study, if you study a lot you will pass the class.
Worst professor I have ever taken. He teaches in a lecture format based on a slideshow and doesn't even hand out a worksheet with practice problems. After the first exam, he stood in front of the class and told us how embarrassing we were since we don't know "basic math." He doesn't give partial credit AT ALL. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!
Took this first semester of my freshman year and I regret that I did not withdraw. I am a sophomore now and have taken college algebra and precalc and got As in those course which are supposed to be way harder than math 101, which shows he can not teach. He is so mean and rude, only cared about letting us know how dangerous COVID is. DO NOT TAKE!!
I personally like Loth. As much as his lectures drag on, and he cannot explain concepts or answer questions to save his life, there is a charm to his class. Take it if you only need one semester of math, and if you already have a good understanding of math. The topics do link with each other, and his exams are easy so long as you do the homework.
Prof. Loth's MA101 class is easy as long as you pay attention and do the homework. There are quizzes every week but they are 3 questions max and easy if you put in effort. He lectures with a PowerPoint, which isn't very engaging but he posts the notes online. He has a strict no-tech policy and dislikes when people talk during class.
Professor Loth is adorable. I understand why some people don't like his lectures. At points they can get confusing, and if you're distracted or (clearly) on your phone, he will call you out. And yet, he's funny when you pay attention. He explains things the best he can, and he's very endearing. Only complaint is that he doesn't give extra credit.
Didn't even go to any classes because in the syllabus he wanted us to wear masks
I love Loth! He goes over a lot of material every class, so try not to miss any. But if you are at every class and actually paying attention, he does a good job at explaining the concepts. There is a quiz every week and quiz questions are directly from the homework, so it's easy as long as you do the homework. I plan to take him again!
legit hardest professor at shu. i took his class for 1 month and dropped bc he was awful. he is so hard and he didnt answer any questions we'd ask instead he'd start talking about other stuff, he was super mean, etc.
When starting this course I was told the material would be easy but little did I know Professor Loth would make easy material into the most difficult material I have ever had to learn EVER. Not only does he make the material unbearable to learn/comprehend he also does not care about if you are successful in his class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, SOS
Loth is cool for the most part, his lectures are boring but as long as you do your homework which most of the time isn't even graded, you'll be fine. Quiz every week but very short and can help you study. Textbook was on syllabus but I never got it and was fine without it.
HE'S AWFUL! Homework due at the beginning of each class and was pretty easy and relevant, but it did NOT count towards your final grade! We had a quiz every Friday and 4 tests for the semester. I did really well on the quizzes but none of that material was on the tests. When ppl would ask questions he told us to drop the class and join another!
Personally, I could not learn by a powerpoint presentation. Not in a math class. Do not take him if you are unable to learn by powerpoint. He barely taught and gave weekly quizzes. I dropped because I knew I would've failed if I continued to take it with him.
Tests multiple times a week with little preparation
Gives you a quiz once a week, so many test with very little preparation, and lectures of a slideshow. He was such a tough grader and barely made any sence when lecturing. Would not recommend this professor.
I would rather stitch every blade of grass together on this earth than have to sit through 5 minutes of this man's lecture.
His class will test you! Theory based learning; the questions he asks are very hard, so make sure to study. Quizzes are weekly (as per almost every math class) and it's straight off the homework; Exam questions build off of quizzes and are usually applications. This is not an easy class, but it preps you well for whats to come. Actually a nice guy.
Accused me of cheating when I didn't. Then told me id be kicked out of school and yelled at me
Honestly, I don't understand the hate. If you do the homework every week you'll pass the class and won't struggle. Most of the quizzes are 3 or 4 questions long and usually are only once a week. His lectures are all on slides and he posts them after class every week. Don't be afford if you get him for MA101.
his lectures made no sense half the time, get ready to teach yourself the material.
there is a test every single week with very little preparation on a topic you just learned. he genuinely makes zero sense and u have to teach everything to yourself. hes nice but not worth it.
This class isn't necessarily hard, but covers confusing concepts of math I've never even seen before. He's very lecture-heavy and doesn't do a good job explaining topics. He gives a quiz once a week, based on the homework at the very end of class. Exams are based on the quizzes and homework, so just do those and you'll be prepared for the exams.
actually the worst professor at SHU take a different math class you will regret it. He never answered his emails and if he did it was several days later. Sometimes he showed up to class late and would always go 10 minutes over class time when I had another class to be at. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND FIND A DIFFRENT MATH CLASS
He is rude and does not truly help support his students. It feels like he teaches what he feels like that day I even had a tutor who had to report my work to those in charge. Asked to meet for help/support and was told this isn't high school anymore and laughed in my face. also yelled at me in front of class for using my accommodations. just rude.
