The keys to this class are 1. Go to class and take notes 2. Go to his office hours. He may re-give you the lecture, but that's because he's so passionate about his subject matter. Very helpful

DROP THIS CLASS- the teacher is unclear. He teaches the course as if he's talking to a group of experienced anthropologists. He gives boring lectures, hard tests, and very limited help.

there is no doubt about it: it's a bad class. very boring and his lecture is very confusing sometimes, and he takes attendence, which is actually good because if you miss a class you're in trouble. a lot of the test comes from his lecture unfortunately.
The WORST Prof at UD by far! If you're in his class DROP IT! Still have nightmares about his awful lectures (and you can't miss class - he takes attendance). Oh, and don't make a stupid comment/question - he'll embarass you in front of everyone :-P

He's very knowledgeable about anthropology and is quite passionate about his work. Sometimes there's a lot of info to cover and taking effective notes is difficult, but if you do the reading and don't miss a class you're gonna do well.
I still have no idea what this guy is talking about! Sewing machines on people's doors? Without the TA, I would be failing this course. Boring, STRICT on attendance, and not very helpful. If you have a choice, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!
This guy blows. Never ever take his class. His lectures are 1hr 15min of nonsense that has no meaning at all. His exams are even worse. The first isn't too bad but it all goes downhill from there. The final is damn near impossable.

Great lecturer! Very interesting class, with many interesting stories from his experiences in the field. All exams were multiple choice, but still very difficult. I read all the material, took good notes, and got an A.

Wow, horrible. First off, he rambles on and on about nothing, I leave class with about 1 sentence of notes. Second, if someone has a question, he just can't seem to answer it, he talks about something completely different. TESTS are ridiculous, he's constantly walking around telling you to cover
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. He's fairly interesting, explains well, and has interesting experiences he shares to make the info more pertinent. If you get less than an A then YOU are the problem, not him.
That last person is sick. THE MAN IS CRAZY. Honestly, last class I took zero notes. He went off topic so many times I was never sure when he would get to the point. BORING BORING. WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! He has no idea how to teach. His lectures have no organization whatsoever, making them impossible to follow. Also, his exams are way too hard. Don't ever take a class with him, or it will kill your GPA.
Having this professor for a 100 level course is SUICIDE, but for higher level classes he is fabulous. He knows what he is talking about, which,unfortunately, he wants all his students to know as well. If you seek help outside of class he is always willing to talk. Just be prepared and be interested or drop while you still can.
Took this class freshman year. As a senior, I'm still regretful. There are so many other ways to get the multicultural requirement, so its really not worth it. Wouldn't let us fill out evaluation forms for him because he knew what was coming. Just avoid at all costs.
He was a very interesting teacher. He told a lot of interesting stories in class that helped reinforce the material that he lectured about in class. The idea of no notes on the board and taking notes purely from his speaking took a bit to get used to but other than that it was a very fun class. Tests are fair, with only a few tricky questions.

i guess i thought it would be different. pretty boring, only 3 tests but the 1st wasn't TOO difficult. then again, i don't know my grade yet. pretty hard to stay away in class, hard to take notes, unorganized. the movies are cool though and he's an extremely nice man. you'll like if you're obsessed with the papua new guinea culture!
It's an easy class if you pay attention. He explains things very thoroughly and applies examples so it's easy to understand. He's a really nice guy, and will help you with anything you need.
Very personable man. He knows your name even if you weren't ever his student. Will go to great lengths to help you out as well. Some say they can't understand his Texan drawl but I never had a problem. As a professor, comes off stricter than he really is.
No essays, lots of reading, but if you go to class you do not need to do all of the readings. tests get specific from case study book, so read that. Boring lecture, but go if you want to pass.
Great teacher, very clear and explains things thoroughly. Make sure you go to class and do the readings and you will get an A. He's a really nice guy and will help you with anything.
The material is a little dry so you really have to apply yourself when you read the material. The small book is essential if you want to do well on the tests. Also you MUST go to the lectures. If you don't, you will be lost. If you don't understand something (which is likely) go to his office hours. He is really helpful when you ask..

Incredibly interesting and important subject. Attend class. Readings not necessary for a good grade if you really are interested and think about the material. Very intelligent professor who will help you understand why certain systems developed in history. Most interesting class I've taken at UD and recommended for any IR major.

Material is dry, confusing but lectures even moreso. Weil is a nice guy with plenty of knowledge and experience but his style of teaching is all over the place, incredibly difficult to follow and off on tangents every which way. There are 3 tests, all 60 question multiple choice. Only permitted 2 absences. Don't take.

Weil is a man with a goldmine of experience that he frequently imparts during class. Tons of interesting, loosely-related facts and situations are described in class. Great class to learn and grow from. Exams were extremely easy. As others have said, he can be a bit confusing at times, but that takes little from the overall experience. B+
This class was nuts, did not teach off the syllabus for me. I got a 65 on the first test, 56 on the second both with 8 point curves. I showed up to the final not reading anything, scribbled down 60 answers that looked like they had a correct word and PASSED the class!!! do not recommend for people not interested in ANTHRO
You guys should totally take this class, if you're into being bored senseless three days a week and failing exams... I don't understand, this guy's been around, he danced the hokey pokey with trobriand islanders, he sat in saunas with Indian chiefs, why the hell can't he bring that wild side to class?!? But seriously guys......NO.
Craaaazy. This man is all over the place. you really have to pay attention to EVERYTHING he says because he will put questions on the test that are extremely random. interesting topic, but hard to pay attention.
If you are doing this to satisfy a requirement...choose another class. The exams are too random to prepare for. Make sure you do the Spradley & McCurdy readings, a lot of his test questions are from there. Avoid if possible, easily the most boring class I've ever taken.
The worst class possible. If you have a hard enough time paying attention in other classes this isnt for you. He goes on and on and you'll never have any idea what he is say. He doesnt use notes or powerpoint which makes it even more difficult. Tests are difficult and he takes attendance in an 150 person lecture! Stay Away
An interesting guy with a lot of experience, but you have to be into Anthro to enjoy the class. Yes, the does ramble on at times without great structure in his lectures, but you can pick out the basic facts of what he is trying to emphasize. Read the material, go to lecture, and if you're not interested, don't take the class!

This was a very interesting class and not too hard. The fact that he is completely insane sometimes put a damper on the lectures because he would tell an hour long story and at the end you would think to yourself "what was I supposed to learn from that?" Also makes humorously bad drawings on the board.

He is a very nice guy but he does tend to ramble during his lectures. The exams want specific information but if you do the reading and pay attention to what he's talking about you should know the material. If you want a class that you can do minimal work to get by I don't recommend this one, but it's not a hard class if you put the effort in it.

Has no notes or slides, extremely hard to follow. Rambles on and on about random tribes as examples that do not relate AT ALL to the topic we are covering. Rude and snide when asked any questions. Exams are extremely detailed and ask questions that do not test knowledge of concepts.

Absolutely DO NOT take this class. He is the worst professor, I cannot understand him, if you look around the room there are at least 20 kids asleep. His tests are impossible, he has a thick southern accent, and he never makes sense. Doesn't make himself available. This class DESTROYED my GPA

If you read the textbook and stay awake in class, which is the hardest thing ever, you will do fine. Try to get a different professor if you can.
AVOID THIS TEACHER. I did well in ALL my other classes (B or higher) EXCEPT this man's. He rambles about issues that are not on the exam AT ALL. I studied A LOT for his last 2 exams (out of 3 total exams) The first one I did not study much at all, just looked over the notes = D..2nd exam, did ALL the readings, reviewed ALL the notes = D+ AVOID!
I tried to enjoy this class, but just...couldn't. I simply couldn't pay attention to him for the whole hour and fifteen minutes. Tests were tricky, and definitely not ones that you could get through very well on "wits alone". He seems knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, but...he just couldn't hold my attention.
By far one of the worst profs I've had ever. Took this as an easy group rec..got a C+, went to every lecture, took notes, paid attention, and read the book. I took Anthropology 101 over Winter Session, I don't see what everyone is complaining about, his lectures were interesting, he choose good selections out of the reading book and his tests were relevant to everything in the book, reading, movies, and lectures. Great professor overall but requires a lot of book reading.
I taped one of his lectures. Every time I have trouble falling asleep at night I put his lecture on and I pass out in about 30 seconds. That's how boring he is. I never stayed awake for an entire lecture and did better than some people who did.
i love him, his stories are facinating, the reading is interesting, and your grade in 101 is based on 3 scantron tests, i did well. i cant imagine missing class though because lectures are extreemly important as is reading you must do the reading

My least favored professor at UD. He would go on and on about insignificant stories. I could not stay awake most of the time unless I had two redbulls before class. If he was clear and to the point, it might have been a good class.
One of the best professors at UD. He knows the material and makes it more interesting by incorporating personal stories and how what you're learning can be applied in the real world...if you go into anthropology. He's really great if you're a serious student. If you aren't, however, he isn't, much like most professors.
The most difficult and most rewarding class I've taken thus far. I would not recommend this course to anyone who isn't prepared to really devote themselves to it for the whole semester. One exam, one paper. To get a good grade on the paper, start as soon as humanly possible.

If you just need an MC, don't take this prof. Not an easy A. However, if you want to challenge yourself, learn to apply concepts instead of just memorizing definitions, you will really enjoy his class. His lecture style seems scattered at first till you figure out where he's going. He's very helpful if he sees you've been paying attention in class.

At first I thought the lectures and reading material were scattered and disjointed; then he told us that for the exam, we'd be putting that info together and giving it meaning. That made me like the class a lot more. I've always loved this professor; he's tough but very fair and very available for extra help. Take him if you really want to learn.
This professor is the most boring, hardest to follow Professor I've ever had. He goes off on constant tangents and you can never guess what is going to be on the tests! The only advice I can give if you have to take the class is to pay attention to his examples and read everything he tells you to read in the books! but don't expect an A.
If you are not prepared to read ALOT and if you are not planning on attending lectures, you WILL FAIL. In the syllabus he outlines a lot of reading and you need to complete all of it to do well on tests. Also, in his lectures have nothing to do with the text books and include examples of his experiences and random tangents so come to lecture.
Worst teacher ever!!!! Not helpful, yelled at me in front of other students, came to office hours and then turned away. Readings were disjointed. He was disorganized. I agree with another post... he needs to retire... NOW. A professor is supposed to mold minds for the future not make them feel like a failure.
He is very polite to his students. Lectures were often very boring and extremely unclear. He assigns A LOT of reading that you need to do in order to pass his exams.
I concur... fired. He is all over the place. No clear correspondence between reading assignments and class. Tests are so particular and half of the questions start with "according to the instructor..." Teach the class, not your random compilation of slightly relevant experiences.
DO NOT TAKE. Grade is based on 3 tests. Tests are wicked hard. I attended every class and did all the reading assignments and still got D+s on the two tests we've taken. He curved the first test 11 points and the second 7 but i still got Ds with the curve so it clearly didn't help too much. Had to make this class Pass/Fail to avoid ruining my GPA
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is a nice guy, and very polite, but he is not organized at all, lectures don't go in any order at all. too much reading for a 100 level intro course. Test a very hard and he always has to curve them because everyone does poorly and even then you still do bad. Wish i would have dropped or made P/F
He is very proud of his work, therefore you hear a lot about it, which may or may not be relevant. I found the tests to be easy if you took good notes on both the reading and his lectures. Write down everything he says. If you sleep through class, of course you aren't going to think the tests are easy.
Pure Lecture, rarely interaction beside when you interrupt him to ask a question. Must do readings, ask detailed questions on exams about them. Pay attention to the details... overall, don't take him. Unless you like grades based off of exams only.
Worst professor ever, hands down. His lectures are so random and have nothing to do with the material. He rambles about his personal experiences that again, don't relate to the material. The lectures themselves are out of order. He had to curve the tests at least 10 points because everyone would fail. He needs to retire.
WORST PROFESSOR. He is extremely UNHELPFUL. On the first exam I got a D+..with a 13 point curve! The next, I was determined to get a better grade, read every chapter and attended all lectures..got a D with a 15 point curve! I can't be the only one who is doing poorly..AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He sucked every bit of life out of the subject of antrho.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE TEACHER! Avoid this class if you can because he lectures the entire time, and if he does write on the board it is in his illegible handwriting. His tests are ridiculous and don't test your knowledge of the material. Many questions begin with "according to the instructor" and ask about particular things he has said. Awful teacher
If you can stay awake during class and consistently god bless you. As I look around now half the class is asleep. Can't follow lectures, Incredibly hard tests and will ask the smallest details about absurd concepts rather than understanding broad topics. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He's a nice guy and is clear very intelligent, but I wouldn't recommend his class unless you are extremely interested in the subject. If you, like me, didn't know all too much about Anthropology before signing up, I'd probably avoid it. If you do take it, however, here's my advice: Record the lectures and READ, READ, READ, then read some more.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is an awful professor, his lectures are long and if you don't fall asleep or leave halfway through you are gifted. He doesn't use slides at all, and what he writes on the board is illegible. I pass/failed the class because it would bomb my gpa otherwise. I can't stress enough how terrible this class is.
This professor will diminish any interest you have in anthropology. He lectures nonstop & nothing makes sense. However, he seems really passionate about what he teaches and is a nice man. 3 exams and that's your grade. They are not cumulative, but they are just like his lectures, hard to understand. Attendance is mandatory.
This professor was fine; I disagee with all the the negative comments. Did you have to do the work? Yes. But he was very generous and experienced. I enjoyed his class very much and retained what I learned in it.
Since attendance is mandatory, you would think you'd obtain som information from the class. But no. He makes no sense and is so boring! He rambles off into meaningless tangents and will ask the most specific questions on exams. And so many are his opinions! Don't take this class if you're hoping for an easy A.
Terrible class. Slept through the class. Test questions started as, "According to your professor..." Take with another teacher and I am sure it will be better.
