cares about his material, but not too much about the individual students.

even though he wanders a bit you still learn all you need, so who cares?
He needs to go.
very condescending & rude. get ready to feel like a fool if you take this class.
needs to speak in english, sometimes it's like hes in his own little world.
Tough marker. His comments were not appreciated.

hard marker, dead set in his ways but you can break in!!
awsome prof... best I've had in all my education
Very clear and good teacher, fun to learn from and has good essay topics.
tends to blab on but all-in-all very intelligent
Nice guy, funny but hard marker and lacks in the clarity department.
Maidstone is an excellent teacher.

if you CAN understand sociology, he's awesome. Peter challenges students who care and doesn't put up with crap. Great all around!
I am growing very sleepy....
one of the most gentle people i've ever met. i loved his class and would be in his class again if i had the chance!
great prof- got me thinking, knows lots- interesting classes.
great teacher, very accomidating to students with disablities. interesting lectures and excellent essay topics. he was always available to assit with questions or clarifying the readings and lectures. i would take a course with him again definitly.
Very ideologically biased. If you are looking for a neutral objective prof, you won't find it here. Should do well if you are left-leaning, if not, then try not to have an opinion.
never shuts up. hard to understand, never clear about anything
I liked peter though he is unclear and unhelpful. He has interesting views and he shares them. Very little work but confusing tests, i.e. do not take class simply for good grade. His veiws are somewhat frightning(very anti-american). Good class to take.
Peter is a straight forward man that seeks to challenge his students. Some say his tests are hard, but that is because he wants his students to be able to understand not just reguritate the information. I would definitely take another one of his courses
A nice guy but very dull classes and hard to understand
class based fully on essays and tests which is good for some people, it worked for me, and i didnt go very ,uich, B- in the course and i went 6 times
Very unhelpfull. Not open mindede either. Does not even go over the readings in the textbook and that is all that is on his tests. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
He's a very interesting and informative teacher. I enjoyed his classes although they were challenging at times. He seems to really know what he's talking about and he really gets you thinking. I found his tests hard.
How could anyone not love and admire this man? He was the best prof. that I had at Camosun, he is fair as long as people do the work. The only people who don't like him are lazy students who are unwilling to work for their grades. Wonderful class &
Peter was a great instuctor and def knows his sociology. His exams are all m/c and fairly easy. Both soc 100/112 were interesting courses.
Excellent, first class teacher. Pulled together this class really well. Well organized. Would make me want to try his sociology classes, if I didn't hate sociology. :-) Come to class, pay attention and you will do well. Really good Prof.
I love Peter! his lectures may seem dull initially, but when he's excited by his topics they come alive. occasionally very witty if you listen closely. tests were straightforward, almost simple. I learned very well from him.
I never know what hes taking about, i'm sure pretty much the whole class would agree with me.
Peter made several **** comments that were not obvious but, very offensive. For example he sida that women after the second world war who had been forced out of the work force had nothing to worry about but what to make for dessert among other comments. He seems to be fairly smart but ****.
This class was barely sufferable. I will never take another sociology class.
Hated every second of this course. The reading were insanely long and then he never covered anything about them in his lectures. He gave out the exam questions before had, but you didn't know where to find the info in the lec notes and texts. Don't take this course. Nothing was cut and dry.
wanted to die...don't take the class with maidstone(r)...if you do, make sure you have some fun cell phone games...p.s. i swear he smokes mad chronic
a dry and tiring class. the tests and assignments were vague and not related to the lectures. peter doesn't know how boring he is.
Very professional professor. Topics may be hard, but Peter is really helpful answer all questions. Only those who's lazy are the ones complaining. Peter is one of the few qualified to be called "professor". His course is tough but EXTREMELY interesting. Love this man !!!
He seems like a genuinely nice guy, but the course was horribly taught. I don't feel I took very much from it at all. Very random lectures, where you don't know what to take notes on, 2 textbooks which are extremely hard to get through, and m/c exams u expect to be easy, but aren't. Wasn't happy.
Interesting class, interesting topics, but boring lectures. cancelled two weeks of classes. but he give good insight, a good class to take if you're interested in Asia
Kool class. Taught very well and was clear. If you are interested in Asia and Foreign Relations you should take this class!
Peter is a genius. Just listening to his lectures makes me want to solve all world problems! His course was well laid out, great text books, thourough lectures. Allways eager to answer questions. He makes learning interesting. Thanks Peter! Great guy! You feel smarter just being near him!
Peter is an excellent prof, very intelligent, but make sure you write down everysingle word of his lectures!! or bring a taperecorder...its hard work in his class but i love how he will bend the course timeline just so we can get into debates...he loves to observe critical thinking-i think it makes him proud..he should have a seminar group though
By far the most inspiring class I've taken. The people who are complaining about it being unclear and random are right. But it's because he lets us really dig into topics. This class is for thinkers and people who are intrested in learning, not just getting good grades. Be active in his class. Plus, he always stands on one foot like a flamingo.
I found the soc intro class easy, very easy, and very boring. He didnt require you to study for his tests, only to listen to his lectures, and you barely needed to read the large amounts of reading. Nice guy, smart but random and repetitive.
I've had Peter for two classes. He's a great progressive instructor who doesn't adhere to outdated conventions, is very easy going, and intelligent. I recommend Environmental Sociology over the Intro to Sociology 100. You'll be able to get by easily without taking Soc 100 and you'll find it a lot more applied and interesting.
The best teacher I have ever had and one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. Sociology is now my favourite subject because of him.
He tries to hide his bias but its obviosly and completely left wing. easy class tho. dont bother reading anything on reserve and take notes in class.
Assumptions. He assumed that when a community said they were uncomfortable with allowing special treatment to a religious minority because it would interfere with the rights of women, he argued that they're **** and if they're **** they must be **** too, and therefore the argument they are making is not legitimate, and is an excuse.
Really unhelpful when I ask for help. He also tends to use over-elevated language when he asks the class simple questions which makes it virtually impossible for anyone to answer (or argue against) him.

loves what he teaches, however, with 75 precent riding on 75 multiple choice, best answer questions, his test style seemed a little harsh. very interesting, but SO repeatative.
Peter's lectures are very engaging. The information he gives may seem overwhelming at first, but if you do the readings you'll be fine. He is very clear, repeats the main points and wants you to understand concepts not memorize facts. He is also very approachable. A+
Every class is unbelievably interesting. He is a very approachable guy and makes the main points very clear. The format may seem overwhelming at first but it's really effective in a discussion type manner. His multiple choice tests can be tricky, but i'm glad I took his class.
cool guy, eaily approachable. interesting lectures, engaging and prepared.
Everyone thinks he's a genius and he is. Anyone with his teachings that can make a modern day class eat it up IS a genius. We didn't learn about equality between ethnicities, we learned about how to cater to minorities. I am a minority, and his class was useless. Hated every second.
Hardcore leftist, brilliant individual, excellent lecturer... but seriously, sometimes it would be nice if he could come down to our level. If you're interested in the topic he's teaching, then def. take his class. If you're looking for a joyride, though, or even something you can pass with minimal effort... look elsewhere.
i took his soc 120 class, and i liked it, but this class was absolutly horrible, i was bored, and took nothing away from the class. thank god i had a lap top to take notes because he doesnt give notes. What if somone needs notes from the prof to study< he just reads back stuff from the texts. I think the teaching style needs an upgrade
Very insightful Prof.! Engaging lectures, down to earth, approachable, knowledgeable, and fair. One of the best profs I have had! Take his class if you wish to expand your worldview.
Very current lectures, insightful comments, highly intelligent, great class if you make an effort to engage in the material, excellent teacher!!!
Great prof, but be ready for a bias to the left. He made it easy and fun to learn the class material. I took several of his classes and was never disappointed. I'd recommend him; he's borderline inspirational.
def not a class you need to take notes in. Fun interesting material, leads great class conversation. easy tester, awesome guy.
His classes rock!
Messy single words scattered on the chalkboard, with cicles and arrows everywhere. talks way too fast, constantly asked to repeat, note taking is a nightmare in this class.unexpected multiple choice questions, that frustrate even the best students. teaches with strong left wing bais.i do not recommend maidstone.
I have honestly never learned as much as i learned in this class. I love you Peter, and i hate the neoliberal agenda!!
Is for folks who wish to expand their knowledge, challenge their assumptions, and forget their grade expectations. Peter is a fountain of insight/information. If you see Peter's classes as 3 exams, a paper, and a letter grade, you will likely be disappointed. If you're there to learn, you will love this man. One of the best classes at Camosun.
Favourite Teacher. He is knowledgeable, funny, up-to-date, and he challenges the status quo. If you have questions, ask them, because he is available and helpful.
Peter is wonderful!!!
I can't believe no one has rated Peter as HOT!!! His zesty character, intelligence and smirk puts him off the charts!!
Dry as a bone.
Great, Great teacher. Agree with poster bellow, if you're there to learn, not just for a letter grade, this is the prof for you
I love love love Peter so much. I have taken a number of his courses, as well as gone on the Vietnam field school with him. One of the best, most interesting, most challenging Profs you will have :)
What a fantastic teacher!! I have never learned as much from any one... EVER. His content is relevant and up-to-date. Everything that comes out of his mouth will blow your mind.
Peter is great. He is excited about the topic and teaches it with clarity. His marking is fair and he never puts student on the spot. He is well organized and his passion is infectious.
I loved this class, Peter was an excellent teacher. Read the text, go to class, and you'll get an A. His passion is infectious.
Can get rather confusing at times, but if you can make connections you can pass this class. Quiet speaker get a seat at the front.
excellent
no hand outs, no instructions, you are on your own and you had better done some personal reading about the entire topic before signing up for this class. interesting stuff but ridiculous to test people on it when you haven't given enough clear, detailed information. sloppy handwriting on the chalk board, no power points!
I ended up dropping this class about 3 weeks in. Reading was plentiful, clarity was not. Allowed chatterbox students to take over the discussion with their "opinions". Did not email me back with a response. Did not feel like struggling through what should be a first-year introductory course.
I have had Maidstone for three classes, first and second year and he is my favorite teacher by far! he knows his stuff and is really interesting.
I ended up getting a good mark in this class, but it was not thanks to Peter. Most boring class I've ever had to go to. Tests were short with 'trick' questions where more than one answer could apply. Slow marker. He has one view on things and only teaches that view. Was a terrible intro class.
Peter likes leaving questions open for the class to answer, so after a two minutes guessing game, you will completely forget what he was talking about before the guessing game. Not a bad teacher, just useless. Avoid if you can.
Prob better for advanced students, avoid for intro. Stream-of-consciousness teaching, take notes as anything he says (no matter how fleeting) can be on a test. Memorize every researcher & their field, you will be tested on them. Very left-wing if that annoys you. Knows his stuff, just not that good at presenting it.
Pre-req: be interested in learning about how societies work. If so, sit back and enjoy the lectures, write notes as much as possible, as he doesn't use power points. The textbook is implemented throughout and Peter incorporates a lot of his own up to date knowledge (ie. from that day) which is great! Go to office hours - he's a helpful prof.
One of my most enjoyed classes.
While lectures can get a bit tangential, Peter knows his stuff and makes it a point to confirm with the class that nobody is getting left in the dark. His exams are much more conceptual than factual (as any good sociology exam tends to be) and he provides the essay questions a week in advance and dedicates most of a class to discussing them.
P.Maidstone rocks..his classes are scintillating, informative and relevant. He knows his stuff and expects a high degree of enagagement with the subject matter and encourages/expects class participation in discussions. His Soc 100 should be a required course for being an adult in our society.
Very knowledgeable, constantly relating course material to current events which helps understand the concepts. Note-taking and regular attendance is a must with Peter's lectures as the content covered make up most of the exam and he does not use power points. Engaging lectures & class discussions. Exams are concept based multiple choice.
Great professor. Inspiring and intelligent. Not a professor for an easy mark. If you generally want to learn, this man has much to teach you. I was amazed at how up to date, articulate, and down to earth Peter was. I cannot wait to take another course with him.
