good teacher with alot of ideas but does not allow others to completely voice there opinions even though he claims to. He will back you if your liberal and attack you if your not or just have a different opinion. you cannot argue with him,is never wrong!

i think that he does let you voice your opinions but you have to back it up with evidence. i like his class environment because he encourages debates and makes his students see both sides

Professor Matthews considers himself to be a Progressive, which is more to the left than typical democrats, but more to the right of extreme left wingers. He is NOT a communist. Republicans and beyond will hate him, or change their views, and join him. People dislike him, but truth is, he's honest and legit. Many share his views, just not on TV.

He likes to hear what ALL of us have to say. Even if you space out in his lectures and debates, if you actually read the book, you should easily land an A or B.

Prof Matthews is a great teacher and a great human being. He makes lecture what they should be- an interactive venue between students and teacher. People criticize him but it is only because he says the truth. If you are a Republican and cant handle argumentation then dont take his class. The basic outline for all of his classes will include a panel where you and some people will give a presentation, and some tests (higher level tests are written, lower level are multiple choice). I spend most of the class arguing conservative views - he argues liberal. As long as you know your stuff you'll get an A in the class, regardless of your political affiliation. However, if you make bad arguments on your tests or on the panel you'll get a bad grade. Use logic and facts.

Mathews is a good teacher. He can be scattered at times though. He's vevry liberal and isn't afraid to express his views which makes for some interesting debates in class. If you're republican and get offended easily i wouldn't suggest taking him. I enjoyed his class and learned a lot. his tests are fairly easy and he offers plenty of extra credit.

I enjoy going to this class everyday. He really opens your eyes and gets you going. He tries to get you involved in the political process and teachs you that you have options and a voice.

Mr. Matthews is probably one of the best Political Science teachers around, he's actually a politician. He speaks the truth and points out how mainstream media is extremely biased towards the right.

Very liberal, as stated before by others. Fun debates take up most of the class period, but if you offer anything that possibly contradicts anything he says, he'll cut you off and ram through his point of view [and I'm not a conservative either! If anything, I'd be liberal]. So, that's not good. Anyways, on the whole- it's an easy/interesting class

great teacher. discussions practically take up the whole class period. offers 50 extra credit points for internship, just attend class! doesn't really teach, but talks a lot about everything in the world. you learn a lot. he's really into it.

If you hate history & want to take up a polisci class that'll grab your attention, i advise you to take Mathews' class. He's a great teacher, even if your bad at understanding government. He clarifies everything. The test are easy because he provides you with notes which you'll go over as a class. Great teacher, he's not one sided on politics.

As said before, definitely a liberal/progressive slant to his views. Most of class time is taken up by discussion - which is fun. Other than that, its just reading from the textbook, which is INCREDIBLY boring. Class consists of 2 in-class essays and a group project summarising a book chapter. Somewhat hard because of few points. DO EXTRA CREDIT!

He's passionate about the subject matter. Not very good at reading the students though. Comment on things once in a while and he'll praise you for it, even if you totally BS it. Just pay attention and you'll do fine.

Grades you on one essay exam, one panel discussion on a book, one objective fianl, class participation, and attendance. Gives extra credit. Lots of reading but you sill do ok even if you can't get to it all. Over all, great class. I totally recommend his class for poli sci majors.

While he provides interesting lectures, he bring a VERY liberal stance, even for a social democrat like myself(reviewer). I appreciated his opinions during the sem, but lost me when he insinuated men like Castro had altruistic intentions and just wanted to provide universal health care. Always late, his congressional campaign seems more important.

Took this as an intersession class and it was soo easy! Let us miss up to 4 times (on a 9 day class) and gave the opportunity to make up a whole test with extra credit! EASY A!

What a persuasive guy, he has what it takes to lure in people to work his campaign. Am glad he is not a Congressman, though he is very nice and have good ideas; I do not think he will represent like he teaches. Class is pretty boring if your not interested. Great Person as a Human being. Has great issues to talk about. Class is pretty ez...do the EC & Internship...boost ur grade from C to A. Lots of class discussion, debates. Super easy, dont need to do any of the listed reading. Using the study guides will get you an A. Class is really boring unless youre into current affairs. Leave class if you can, easy prof to take if you need it for GE. Do extra credit if you bomb the tests. Make sure he knows your face, thats how he bases class participation.

He definitely knows how to rile up a class of teenagers who is generally apathetic about current events. Enjoyed the class and learned a lot, however I did not agree with how he shoots down every person who tries to challenge him. Make sure to read the textbook! It's not enough to just listen to lectures to do well on his tests.

After taking his class I changed my major to political science. He is very extreme in his views but knows what he is talking about. He is an amazing teacher and I never thought Id ever be interested in Political Science until i met him. AWESOME. class consists of 4 tests all you have to do is study the study guide and you will be fine.

He's a very opinionated professor. He's somewhat biased when he speaks but he's just opening up our eyes to what we haven't seen before. His class is pretty fun and he doesn't take roll after the first month of the semester. As long as you use the study guides he gives you and quickly skim through the book, you'll pass the tests.

Professor Mathews is very passionate in his views about the government, which shows his dedication. He gives lecture notes and a study guide for each test, so the books aren't really need. He tends to get off topic but they are really interesting. He urges students to be more informed with the events and challenges us to counter ideas in debates.

Professor Mathews is truly brilliant. Though I can see why some classmates dislike his teaching style and views, he is still a very qualified instructor -- I am personally impartial to his views but understand his logic. Be sure to read the book!

One of my Favorite Teachers Ever. Has improved greatly from the rants he used to go on. He is passionate and cares about real life issues and is honest and true about them. Approach his class with an open mind, and it may change your life. at the least, take bullet points of what he goes over and some study helps. i've taken 3 classes of his.

I admire his passion, but he really needs to pay more attention to presenting both sides of the story when talking about philosophy, and not just his far-left viewpoints. Do your homework on Marxism because this guy paints a way too rosy picture of it, and even some of its worst case poster boys like Mao Zedong.

I have taken him for Poli Sci 120 & 100 and if you are a student interested in learning in depth about the politics and economy of the world he is the professor for you. He definitely makes you earn your grade, and the more you participate in class lectures the better you will perform and understand the curriculum.

I took Professor. Mathews for Political Theory (PoliSci 120) I have to admit it was pretty easy. Just study for the exams and you'll be golden. Well. For this class there were only 3 exams including the final. In addition, Mathews expresses his passion for political issues through his inspirational lectures. In the end, great professor.

I wish I had more time to spend with this instructor. He was very interesting and informative. I never knew politics was this soap operish and cutthroat. I learned a lot and was able to finalize my choice of becoming a Democratic voter. He uses his own book, Dollar Democracy, and it was a good read. Read the two books, take the tests, fair grade.

Please don't be deceived by the negative criticism. I've taken Prof Mathews for a few of his classes. He is sensible in giving objective lectures and wanting students to engage in critical thinking about political science.. He is a genuine, sincere and an inspirational instructor. For me he was one of the greatest Professors I had at Cypress.

Had Professor Mathews for POSC 100 and he was great! Feared the class was going to be bad, but he really makes it awesome! Prepare to have your mind blown by his facts! Do what you gotta do, and you'll pass. Do nothing, and you probably won't. No internship by the way! Definitely recommend him!

E. Peter Mathews is a great professor and makes his grading and assignment layout clear as day. This was a very easy class to pass. I averaged every test at a B and did all of the assignments and some of the offered extra credit and passed with a high A. He is a great professor but is very lecture heavy so missing lectures are on you, and on tests.

By far the greatest Political Science Professor one can ask for. The man changed my educational outlook and perspective in a greatly positive manner after taking his classes.

Prof Mathews is what every professor to be like. He is inspirational and cares about all his students. He simplifies his lectures so that it is easy to understand politics. While attendance is not mandatory if you will want to go to his lectures due to how interesting they are. His lectures correspond with current event and are easy to understand!

I retook this class because I failed with a different professor and Im really happy I took Professor Mathews. He doesn't just read off powerpoint, he shows you videos and is very clear with his notes. He made his class interesting and clear with test. Definitely recommend him you will not fail if you do the his work and try.

His "lectures" are more of a class discussion on modern issues. He goes over the notes but does get sidetracked a lot. However, the discussions are interesting and are thought provoking. He hands you a packet with all the notes. Just review the packet and read the textbook and his book to get an A. Drops lowest exam. Offers extra credit.

He gives his 2 cents on politics and which he uses data to back up anything he claims. 100% I'll take again. I am now a more educated voter.

Very easy class. Showed up maybe half the semester and passed with an A. He gives many extra credit opportunities and there is little to no homework. One paper required, the rest are extra credit. All tests are online and can be done from home. Gives study guide packet that has most test answers, however a lot of the questions do come from textbook

I really enjoyed his lectures esp when other people participated, it was really fun and interesting to listen to. I don't know why he gets low ratings, personally I liked how he taught, and he doesn't make you feel stupid for any questions. You have 3 tests and 1 final, and the lowest grade gets dropped. Had him for 2 classes. Super easy class, just be in the ZOOM call and be there for attendance. Only 3 exams, 1 essay, and extra credit. He appreciates participation but not many do, and kinda goes on long tangents. If you're not left-wing you might not agree with him but wasn't an issue for me! I have to take him again but I don't mind his classes!

He is very professional and nice, just a bit disorganized. I had him during pandemic times and the class seemed very improvised. This was years ago, don't know if that has changed or not. He is very passionate about his subject. He wants people to learn about government and be more engaged with current events and politics for their well-being.
