Really funny guy but sometimes was unclear. His lectures are a little confusing at times, he tries to explain things in a sort of complicated way. Homework is easy but tests are a little hard.
Tough but it is definitely possible to get an A in his class. He teaches bio 148 which is full of freshman that have not learned how to study or take notes. His lectures are great- but it is your responsibility to take notes and listen and study and make sure you understand. The tests are tuff- its more about understanding the question.
Mirabito's exams are defiantly tough. His lecturers can be confusing, I mean very confusing if you don't go to class prepared. If you know the material ahead, it's not bad. He has pre-homeworks for that but it didn't really help me because I used to just rush it the last min. However, his whole "final exam replaces all your other exams" helped.
Mirabito is SUPER smart and SUPER organized. If you want to do well, follow the schedule in his syllabus like your life depends on it. I found him generally friendly and approachable. One word of warning: before you ask a question, spend some time thinking it through on your own. He hates distracting questions and may be a bit rough to the asker.
If you can take Osterhage take her. He's really nice and funny, but when he lectures he's not clear. He expects you to know more than you will.
It is irritating that you will never need to know this information again, yet you are graded like your life depends on it. If you read along with the course schedule and attend all of the lectures, it is do-able, otherwise, good luck.
I went to every lecture and still had a hard time understanding. He doesn't really go over stuff in the book, it's more whats on the homework is whats on the test. He expects you to know a lot more than you actually do.
He's smart. Like, extremely smart. This is probably why he thinks that we already know the information, even when we don't. He's hilarious in class, and if he's sarcastic to you, don't take it the wrong way. He really is willing to help you if you ask for it. Great professor!
Mirabito has a unique way of explaining things, and these explanations are often muddled and confusing. His tests reflect his teaching, and so even if you read the book, if you skip class don't expect to do well. His lectures are not engaging. However, he tries to lighten the mood with jokes, and he does seem to care about helping his students.
Mirabito knows his material, but lectures can be very confusing and hard to engage in. Echo recordings are a life saver. Tests are very difficult and he expects you to know a lot. He is there to help, but his "genetics is the easiest science" mantra makes it difficult for struggling students to approach him.
His class is tough. Probably the toughest class I have had but with hard work and going to office hours for questions about material, you should do fine. He expects you to know all of the terms and general concepts because his questions are built to test your application of the material. It is hard but he is a great teacher and is willing to help.
Lectures were a little boring but that was more of the material than the professor. I plan on taking him again.
Pretty good professor overall. His lectures can get long and boring at times but he is very good at stopping to answer questions. I personally don't learn very well in large lectures but the homework was extremely useful. Tests are moderately hard but if you mark down what he goes over and study that material well enough you will be fine.
Initially I was nervous about having Dr. Mirabito as a professor, but this nervousness was soon put to rest. Dr. Mirabito is honest, funny, down-to-Earth, and willing to help you if you ask for it. He really knows what he is talking about, and I think that as an intro bio student that can be why his concepts are sometimes hard to grasp.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. Half of his lectures are spent trying to prove how much he knows. He is not an effective teacher. He claims that he wants you to know all of this information for life, but exams are just all about learning how to master his "games." He is also incredibly demeaning. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Mirabito's teaching style isn't something many people are familiar with, but it's this uniqueness that makes him a wonderful professor (in my opinion). He is very well versed in genetics, genomics, and biochemistry and always looks out for his students. He knows the common misconceptions and general reasons students misunderstand genetics.
Great class, but be prepared to work hard. He'll work with you to help you understand material, and seems to be really after a solid understanding and application rather than just memorization. Go to class (that's not optional) and keep on top of the assignments and readings and you'll do fine!
hes INCREDIBLE! by far the coolest prof ever, he knows what hes talking about and hes very clear. Genetics is tough but he makes it extremely understandable and so much fun! do the practice exams and you'll be golden, he also loves when you come to office hours with reasonable questions, he'll put you on the spot if you're not prepared
Mirabito is literally the worst professor out of all of mine. He's hard to understand and he's monotone so it's very easy to zone out. It feels like he doesn't care about his students because everyone will be talking loudly (because they zone out) and he'll just keep lecturing like you can hear a pin drop. Literally awful.
Bad teacher with an attitude problem. 1) lectures are insanely boring. He makes no sense at all-- information is not organized and doesn't flow well. Needs to learn to organize thoughts. 2) tries to be techy but it works against him. 3) makes rude comments; talks down to us 4) no verbal questions. Using piazza for in class questions sucks
If you take what you learn in his lectures and apply it to his homework, it is really easy to learn from him. He also has a very unique dry sense of humor that spices up lectures and makes them more interesting. Stay on top of the material in this class and an A is attainable.
Lectures are very important, but he posts all of his lectures online. BIO 304 is easily the hardest class I've ever taken in my life, but Mirabito made making an A possible. He replaces every single exam score with whatever you got on that section in the final. Work hard and you will definitely get an A or a B!
Dr. Mirabito is THE BEST. He really wants his students to succeed, he loves what he teaches, and he's absolutely hilarious. I had him for Bio 148 and was super excited to have him again for genetics.
Genetics has been one of the roughest classes I've taken. Its easy to blame professors when classes get intense and your grades suffer but not with Dr. Mirabito. I feel like he genuinely wants students to succeed. He is great "teacher," meaning he teaches you the subject instead of just describing concepts. He loves genetics and it shows in class.
There are some really annoying things about Mirabito. He doesn't let you ask questions during lectures and he can come off rude a lot of the time. BUT he puts a lot of effort into helping students understand and is very willing to sit down and work with you. His lectures are terribly boring, but he lets you make up all participation points.
I love Dr. Mirabito, I had him both for Bio1 and genetics. He's so smart and has lots of office hours to help students.
I would not recommend this professor. I struggled in this class and when I went to his office hours, he called me stupid for not understanding the concept right away. His office hours are filled with tons of other students, so good luck ever getting to ask your question before he leaves.
I believe that the students that do not succeed in this class is because they give up, not because of Mirabito himself. Can come off as rude, but loves to help students and makes his grading criteria crystal clear. His tests are not simple memorization like many other classes. He makes you critically think WHICH IS HUGE FOR FUTURE MCAT PERFORMANCE!
He's so condescending in class and it really irritates me that you can't ask questions but outside of class- he's like a different person. Has LOTS of office hours and tries to help you understand the content. Grade is very well outlined from the beginning. Occasionally he posts multiple homework assignments due before class that seem tedious.
The homework is impossible and the office hours are not helpful. He does not answers questions if a student asks during class. If you miss a reef question, your attendance is heavily effected, even if you are there. 10/10 do NOT recommend!!!!
Dr. Mirabito definitely knows biology, but sometimes explains it in terms difficult to understand for introductory to bio. However, he links several resources on canvas that are extremely helpful to 'dumb it down' so you can understand. Also for his class knowing the info isn't enough, you have to have a good understanding to pass.
He is very lecture heavy and tries to trip you up with the wordings of questions. He does want everyone to succeed and is willing to help you if you go to his office hours. He can be monotone when teaching so it was easy to not pay attention but the material is not difficult to understand.
Genetics is the hardest class I have taken so far at UK. Dr. Mirabito didn't answer class questions. He made you feel like an idiot for even asking them. I feel like he did genuinely want all of his students to succeed but I also feel like he expected too much out of them. His lectures are hard to listen to but participation is mandatory.
I loved him! I thought he explained things very well and genuinely cared about student success. It can be homework heavy at times but the homework is quick and easy and is useful for studying for the exam. He also provided lots of practice tests/hw to help you prepare for the exam, I only really did the practice stuff and got A's on the tests
grade based on homework and exams. exams are very difficult because they are laid out in a very strange way that some can't adjust to. Doesnt really explain some of his answers with the exact correct answer, sometimes he will explain without giving you a definite answer
Dr. Mirabito is a prof who believes in understanding the material instead of just memorizing things. His lectures were interesting if you like biology - which you better if you're on this path. Also had some funny moments. He did a good job balancing seriousness with humor.
He is a very approachable professor, utilize office hours! He is incredibly helpful in a smaller setting. Quizzes are so important for formulating exams so understand what you miss. Participation and homework is fairly graded.
Dr. Mirabito is phenomal. He truly cares about his students doing well and makes himself readily available in office hours. I had him for 148 and 304 and am happy I chose to take him for both. Make sure to go to his office hours so he knows you want to do well too! One of my favorite professors.
Dr. Mirabito is great!! He truly does care. The problem is that genetics is just a tough class. I had to study ALOT to get an A, but he definitely makes it doable!! Word of advice: you can replace all your exams on the final, but DON'T neglect the semester exams thinking you'll just replace them because you more than likely won't replace any.
Mirabito gets a bad rep, but he really is good. Go to class, participate in reef questions (you'll usually see those on the test), and go to his office hours/approach him after class. He might seem intimidating, but he really isnt and wants to help students that want to learn. He also makes all expectations clear.
Mirabito is definitely a more challenging teacher than the other BIO 148 teacher, however, he is pretty straightforward with his expectations and how to pass the class. Just pay attention! He lectures with his powerpoints (everything is on the website), then you have 3 tests and a final. My test grades were 82, 82, 86, then a 93 on the final.
This is the only class I've ever had to drop. When people would ask questions in class for him to further explain something, he would respond with the exact words he had already used, but just louder. It did not answer the question. His tests are also made just to trick you. Lectures were also extremely boring-- nearly fell asleep every class.
Dr. Mirabito seems to be a great guy outside of lecture, however his teaching methods make even the simplest of concepts confusing and difficult. His tests are extremely difficult and often require you to guess on half the questions. I would recommend taking another professor for BIO 148.
Dr. Mirabito's teaching methods make simple concepts confusing and difficult. His tests are extremely difficult and he does not review at all. I would recommend taking another professor for BIO 148 like O'Quinn.
Lectures are long and boring. Easy to fall asleep so bring coffee or something. Tests are hard. Tells jokes sometimes though.
I am a straight A student and I struggled to pass this class. This is definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken. Mirabito is a good professor and the information itself isn't hard, its the tests. The exams are extremely hard, however you can replace all of your exam scores on the final.
He is great teacher if you pay attention and do what you are supposed to it will not be as difficult as others have posted. He is funny during lectures but the test questions were very confusing at times.
Dr. Mirabito is one of my favorite professors! He is kind and funny. He can be sassy in class which is really funny. Go to his office hours!!!!
Genetics is not an easy course and Dr. Mirabito makes sure you work for your grade. Go to his office hours, do the practice problems, and practice exams. He knows it's a difficult course so he lets you replace your exam scores on the final exam. I had a D at midterms and ended up with a B because of the replacement option.
Dr. Mirabito is an inspiring professor, who knows genetics like the back of his hand. The material is decent, but the exams are designed to make you fail. I am a straight A student, and had no problem with Bio 148, but this was the hardest class I have taken. I understand challenging your students, but he will test you on material you never learned
The professor is terrible. Ive never experienced something so brutal. He tests you on material we didnt discuss. I did multiple practice exams and got atleast a 78 or higher and studied and took good notes on top of that but when I went in to take the exams I did poorly. The exams are worth 69% of the grade which is a lot. Dont take him!
Very similar to AP bio. Use the practice exams and visit him in office hours!
The bottom line with Pete is you're either going to like him a lot or not at all. My class this semester has had very mixed feedback for him. His teaching style did not mesh well with me at all and I struggled a lot to get the grade I needed, but others thought he was a breeze. It's really about how you learn with this guy. Lots of jokes tho.
You either like him or you hate him. I found his quirky ways pretty funny, & I think he was very confident in his knowledge of the subject. He was very open to explaining his lectures. Be very careful when answering clicker questions, & take advantage of practice exams & homework!
I took bio304 with Mirabito this past summer. He made a miserable fast paced class very enjoyable. It was alot of work, but that is to be expected since the department crammed a 16 week course into 6 weeks. Mirabito is great at simplifying genetics and explaining things in layman terms. I wish I could take him for the rest of my classes at UK.
Mirabito is an acquired taste. At first I didnt know what to think of him. Give him a chance and youll eventually catch on to how he does things. His lectures can be a little scatter brained but theyre usually funny. He also focuses a lot on helping you understand how to learn best and prepare for tests. Overall I enjoyed having him.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. His notes are messy, lectures are unorganized, and if you don't grasp it the first time through you might as well give up. Luckily, I had a good TA that helped me pass the class. Do not take Mirabito unless you have no other option.
good lecturer who clearly conveys most information, very lecture heavy his classes can be draining at times. overall a solid course and instructor.
Dr. Mirabito is amazing! Hes really good at teaching the information in a way that just makes sense. He provides good notes to fill in and learn the material. Theres a ton of practice questions given before tests which help the most. Go to class, know the vocabulary, look at learning objectives, get help, and youll be okay.
You either love his teaching style or hate it. I hated it, the notes are very messy and unclear, and I thought the lectures were confusing. I wish he had used a textbook more as a resource, I hated having to scroll back through the messy notes pages trying to find information. He is really funny, though, and a really nice person.
You either love or hate his teaching style. I hated it, I thought the notes and the lectures were very unorganized. I would be stuck on a homework question and had to scroll through my notes looking for a simple answer to a question I had. I wish he had used a textbook instead, so I didn't have to rely on the messy notes pages for studying.
Dr. Mirabito is awesome. He has a genuine passion for bio, and of course, a very strong knowledge of it. This class is all lectures, but Dr. Mirabito makes them interesting. Hes funny and overall a great choice. This course is tricky and requires a lot of studying, but Mirabito helped me really understand the content.
Dr. Mirabito is honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. He cares so much about his students and genetics. His passion for the subject makes the lectures interesting. Utilizing his office hours is KEY. He did everything he could to help me this semester. Don't be afraid to ask him for help. Genetics is NOT as bad as everyone says.
Loved him, funny guy. His organization can be kinda funky, so go back and review in an order that works for you. Class is very straightforward if you study smart and pay attention. Classes are live-streamed on echo and exams are all MC, some questions are hard/wordy but nothing unreasonable. Great piazza response times its kinda iconic.
Mirabito is kind and accessible, but he does not teach. He plows through problems with no explanation of the rules or foundations, then pulls exam questions out of no where. It's one thing to push students to apply their knowledge, but he does not give students the tools necessary to have a fair shot at doing so. Ask questions EARLY and OFTEN.
Very nice guy and is very accessibly outside of class, but he is very vague when he answers questions and rarely just gives the information clearly. Exams are the same format as practice exams, but he tends to use questions that we never remotely covered how to approach. He does let you replace every single exam if you do better on the final.
Dr. Mirabito is great. Genetics is a very tough course and he knows that. He gives you ample opportunity to work for the grade you desire. Tests are extremely hard but the ability to replace them off the final is a huge plus. Make sure you do test corrections and get all the other points available from hw, labs, participation, etc.
Dr. Mirabito is fun and caring, but the class is really based on four test grades. There's notes and homeworks due for points, which did manage to bring my grade up to a B. The lectures went over test like questions, but all questions are poorly worded and confusing. Okay class and teacher, but be prepared to work a lot and hard.
Dr. Mirabito is the best professor I've taken at UK. He has a unique teaching style that throws most students off, but his use of the socratic method when answering questions is actually pretty beneficial. Always ask him questions inside/outside of class because he wants to help you and try to do well on the first 3 tests because the final is hard.
Although this class is very difficult, Dr. Mirabito does a great job teaching it. He talks about how much he loves genetics and you can see it through his lectures. The exams are difficult but he gives tons of past exams so that you can be as prepared as possible during the exams. He teaches through fill in the blank notes which I enjoy a lot.
I had him when it was online, and he was scattered during lecture time, requires you to watch 30-50 minute videos before class. You honestly can just pause the video and write everything down and skip ahead to a next slide. During lecture time, bewary of others making the material more confusing. The exams are exactly like HW/lecture problems
the best bio professor out there!! awesome lectures, very easy to follow and very fair tests!! 10/10
You dont have to go to class to pass just watch the videos and do the notes
Professor Mirabito is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He does not teach, he uses google surveys during class. He gives us notes, which are very helpful but he didn't make them. When we did the google surveys and the majority answers were wrong, he wouldn't tell us any info on the correct answer, he said "You're making me look bad".
I really enjoyed his class. He is a very easy going guy and in BIO148 he does not require attendance, but I would recommend going as he goes over a lot of information in greater detail. There is no late penalty besides the quizzes and if you miss a quiz you can make it up. He wants you to succeed so I recommend taking him.
Attendance wasn't required and you could always join the class meetings on Canvas. I really liked this class because there was no penalty for turning in work late at all. This class is just very heavy on the test grades, but you do get the chance to make up one test at the end of the semester.
Dr. Mirabito is a fantastic teacher. Main lecture is through videos before class, class is used for concept practice. He has an funny sense of humor, and is very personable. He is willing to talk after every class and gives every student attention. Do practice exams and you will pass. I would definitely take this professor again.
Dr. Mirabito sets himself apart from other professors at UK in that he truly cares about his students. He and Dr. O take every measure possible to assure the success of their students. The course material content is very interesting and Mirabito could not have been better (he does not require attendance!).
Dr. Mirabito is one of the best professors at UK! He truly cares about his students and wants them to do well. He made the concepts in cell bio very digestible and accessible, a skill that is rare in a lot of stem professors. He is also very easy to contact outside of class. So if you are struggling, just reach out! I would highly recommend him!
The majority of Mirabito's classes consists of review, as lectures + notes were given through video modules that you did for homework. Hilarious guy who always started class with "remember, my job is to help YOU succeed." Overall very positive experience, just put in effort and turn things in on time
Dr. Mirabito made it very clear from the beginning of class that he really cared about us and our success. 10/10 would recommend.
He made bio very interested and he was interactive which made it SO much easier to learn!!
Started class everyday by chugging a Monster energy drink. Made lectures fun and always answered questions. Any work that needed to be corrected would be able to at least get a second attempt on it. Some of the content is hard to learn, so it does require outside of class commitment, but 100% would take a class with him again.
Don't trust anyone who complains about this man. There's no excuse not to get an A or B in this class. He always wants to help you, you can earn points back on almost every assignment, and retake an exam. Plus exams are not weighted heavily at all (55%). You will have to work, but all of it helps to prepare you for the test. He is also very kind.
Dr. Mirabito is a very nice guy who is willing to help students in various ways. Because of the many lecture videos and usual worksheets, you'll need to set aside some time for this course. As long as you participate and review what you've missed in activities, you'll have a plethora of points that can be used to cushion exams.
Dr. Mirabito always emphasized how he is there for us to use and to use him fully to pass the class. He genuinely wanted everyone to pass the class and made it really easy to do so. As long as you did your class work and paid attention in class it is an easy A. He's also a really great person and is always willing to talk to his students.
Dr. Mirabito is very passionate about biology and is quite approachable. While much his class grading is based on in-lecture participation, he is really good at helping students recover after potentially bad exam scores. My lecture required pre-lecture videos, however, if you watch them, lecture becomes a way to hone your understanding.
This man is a godsend that should not be taken for granted. He does everything he can to get you to pass.
Dr. Mirabito is an amazing professor, does his best to keep lectures entertaining and has LOTS of office hours. Very kind and wants you to get an A!
Dr. Mirabito literally refuses to let anyone fail and offers sooo many opportunities to improve your grade. You get one exam retake at the end of the semester after going to a few office hours and his feedback is very helpful. He is also very fun to listen to during lectures.
very fun professor, made the class fun.
Dr. Mirabito is one of the best professors I have ever had. Cell Biology instantly became one of my favorite courses because of him. He has a passion for educating and genuinely cares that his students do well. He uses PollEverywhere to measure understanding in class and provides amazing lectures with tons of practice. Amazing!
Dr Mirabito is an amazing professor, i had in twice this semester and really enjoyed the content received and class overall. participating and attendance matter so be ready to show up and work!
I am not sure if it was my TA or Pete but we got out of our 3 hour lab early two times. It was extremely difficult to stay engaged for this long but there was absolutely no outside class work which was nice. BIO 155 could be much more enjoyable if the content was more exciting, instead it was all computer work. Easy grading which was nice.
this class is super easy. I barely ever saw Dr. M in my section -- it is taught by TAs mainly. grading is VERY lenient; a majority of the class is filling out worksheets online and learning how to research. I think my only issue with this class is that it is 3 hours of just computer work.
