Dr. Norris presents his materials in a very clear and concise manner. He is willing to provide you with the necessary assistance on homework etc. Although his tests were VERY challenging, you will not exit the course without a clear understanding.

Likely the best professor at YSU. His presentation is flawless and every detail mentioned in his lectures are important. Has a extensive web site with practice problems. Bends over backwards to help with any questions; returns tests next class.
Very good professor and has an awesome accent that makes it easy to listen to him. His tests are a bit hard, and he grades tough, but if you do the practice tests you will be fine.
dr norris is a great prof
I am currently involved in Ochem 2 and had him for the first semester, he is by the far the most porfessional, organized, open to giving help professor in the dept. His class is considered hard but fair. Hard to concentrate bc hes so delicious in class.
Great guy, great class, learned a lot, like to have him for every class offerered at YSU, or my father.
The best teacher I've ever had. He actually makes organic fun and interesting. He can be tough, but will do everything he can to help you do well in his class.
Lecture was clear and organized, very helpful website, prompt test grading...the only thing detracting from the course was the size of his ego....a bit of a superiority complex...

i had dr norris for chem 3719 and 3720 and he was great. He was very clear and through in his explanations. He is totally dedicated to his students. he runs an online message forum and has open office hours... always very helpful...
Dr. Norris was the most organized, professional person I have dealt with in my college experience. As stated before his lecture presentation is flawless and I guarantee you will not encounter a harder working professor.
Dr. Norris is a wonderful professor. He takes a very hard subject and makes it "doable" for those who would otherwise have troubles. He teaches you in a way that you don't just memorize it.

very good professor, plus he's a chem stud
I enjoy his class very much. He truely cares about his students succeeding in the future.
one of the best teachers ive ever had, bottom line.
Most dedicated professor that ever walked the planet. His office hours are unbelievable, and he sits down with anyone, as long as you don't ask dumb questions the day before the test. Very organized, and he makes you learn the material, so keep up.
Even though the material is hard, he teaches it in a way that you can manage it! He's always answering questions on the message board, you'd think he didn't have a life! Great prof!

simply put, as good of a teacher as any . . . he's rather difficult but he makes every attempt to make learning Organic Chemistry as "doable" as possible . . .
Exams are difficult, but his lectures are really understandable. He seems to be interested in the success of all his students. He is the best and most sucessful Organic professor at YSU period. All his students get good jobs. Very funny guy when he gets upset. =o) Take his classes in order to learn
good class
He's amazing. I hated chemistry until I took his class. Highly recommend.
While he is an great teacher....he has serious attitude problems and he takes them out on his students which is very unprofessional. So if you take, you will learn a lot, but make sure that you talk to him when he is in a good mood!!

best teacher ever
For as difficult a subject O.Chem is, he made it very doable. I still remember the material after several years of taking it. Gotta love the accent too!
will talk to you for a half-hour after class, no worries, and then when you show up to class the next day, 30 seconds late, will tell you not to ever-ever again . . . great teacher though ~ his reputation for being difficult off a little; it's organic chemistry, it's suppose to be hard
No Comments
Excellent Teacher in terms of classroom instruction. Organic chemistry itself isn't terribly difficult but his exams are built to be difficult & extremely long. He is approachable depending upon what mood he might be in which swings from hour to hour/day to day. Great Guy, Good teacher but very difficult to associate with at times.
Amazingly available.
Norris is very hard, but he teaches very well.

The few negatives are SO BAD they supercede the positives. UNPROFESSIONAL! Quite literally sought opportunities for BOISTEROUS ranting in class but was a paper tiger at best. The chafing from his ENORMOUS ego superheated my blood and ruined lecture day after day. Dr. Norris, you could be a great professor if you learned to be HUMBLE.
His lectures were good and I got an A but I found him distracting. It looks like he seeks reasons to belittle others. I guess it makes him feel important. One day he went on ranting and threatening some girl saying he didn't care if she had a class that she better be in his office after. It was unprofessional, embarassing, and it wasted our time.
Dr. Norris is a good teacher and at times I think he means well. I learned alot but I also learned alot about his personality. He is very unapprochable & he tries to intimidate some students. He has insulted me SEVERAL times. Good teacher but he has some serious personality issues that will make the average person very angry and frustrated.
He is the most available teacher you will ever meet at ysu. His office hours are insane. I actually learned organic chemistry and not just memorized mechansims. If you are having any trouble at all, go talk to him early! He cares about his students and wants you to succeed. One of the best professors at ysu.

THE best professor I've ever had, and I'm in my senior year. He is great at teaching o'chem and you'll learn a lot from him. HOwever he is probably one of the hardest professors you'll ever have. You must literally know EVERYTHING. If you want to go to med, pharm, dental school, take Norris. Ive had Dr J and Dr norris is better. hot british accent
Happy, happy student. I hated gen chem & took O Chem w/ apprehension - LOVED the class. It was fun & interesting & Norris is an amazing prof. Never had a prof that was so available & able to answer questions like him. Actually learned material & tests were really reasonable (study the old tests), curve is unnecessary. TAKE NORRIS, HE'S GOOD! :o)
awesome
Wonderful professor. very open to answer questions during class opens himself up to help at all hour of the day and night. his online chat room is very helpful because we see each others questions and Dr. Norris's responses to the questions. His exams are a little more challenging but if you keep up with the material then you can do really well.
Great professor! Is very helpful and explains clearly. He is in his office during his office hours all the time and cares very much for his students to understand the material. But he does have his favorites in class though.
excellent lecturer, but skips steps in mechanisms that he goes over in class (e.g. resonance structures, etc..) and then tests on them. He will randomly then take points off your tests and justify it with some strange explanation. This happened to a buddy and me. He told my friend one thing, and then told me another thing completely different.
He's 95% good. I got confused every day because when I looked away to write he would say "then this attacks that over here to make this and more of that." He ripped alot on what a bad job other profs did, which wasn't cool, but he was a decent prof. Hope he corrects this stuff for the next class. Overall good, just needs a little adjusting.
Better off taking Dr. Jackson using Dr. Norris' notes and released exam(s). Norris is NOT that good as people have said. I ended up teaching myself everything.
Dr. Norris is a great teacher.O Chem is not suppose to be easy but he gives you plenty of practice problems and multiple ways to get ahold of him if you have questions.Seems intimidating but is very approachable.Tests can be tough if you put off studying.Suggestion:when it comes to mechanisms,write/draw each step for each mechanism.
very smart. for the subject being so difficult he does a good job instructing as long as you put in the work and keep up with the reading and practice problems on his webpage. if you don't, it's very easy to get lost but that isn't his fault.
Norris is a great professor. Extremely approachable. Study this stuff, ask questions you shoulad get at least a B in this course.
Very helpful, LOTS of office hours and really cares about students! You'll like him, but if you dont, just wait till he turns the lights off and pretend he's David Beckham (hot british accent!!) Also dresses nicely, much better than jackson.
teaches you how to work hard!!!
Dr. Norris is an excellent teacher. He is extremely helpful and available, even by text message. He has a message board on his website and responds to questions, even when redundant, quite quickly. You will need to put work into the class, but Dr. Norris provides the tools for success. It is up to you to utilize them.
Dr. Norris is a very good professor that will make you really work for your grade. he realizes that not everyone is chemistry material but is very helpful during office hours. if you work hard from the beginning you will get at least a b
Norris is very helpful, teaches well, but expects A LOT out of his students.Be prepared to WORK HARD FOR YOUR GRADE!Very available, loves 2 b visited. TONS of prac mat'l online plus a msg board!Past exams posted for review, but exams given get more &more difficult! Some ques seem a bit ridiculous..make sure u know EVERYTHING! Hard 2 get an A. Good luck.
Best professor at YSU, but you have to LEARN the material. He will sit with you for an hour if you want, but he will not give you an easy grade. Anyone could get at least a b in this class if they use the nearly limitless resources that he provides and takes it seriously. Attend class everyday. Come finals, you wont regret it.
Was extremely helpful. If you are ever going to take an MCAT or PCAT then Norris is a must! You will leave his class knowing way more than anyone else at other schools. This man isn top notch and will not slow down so make sure to keep up. Look at his old tests and make sure you understand them... do not try to memorize because it won't work
Great guy!!
This class is NOT easy, but you do LEARN the material, which is essential for the PCAT or MCAT. Study every day, work hard at it, take the recitation course, and if you have any questions make sure to attend office hours. He is extremely helpful if you are having trouble.
He's awesome!!! He's really helpful in lab and he will help you with exams in the actual class, even if it isnt his.
I've had Norris for both O Chem 1 & 2. He is a great teacher. As long as you keep up with it and put in the effort you'll do great. Some students find him intimidating but he's been nothing but friendly and helpful. I'd recommend him if you want to LEARN.
Awesome guy. Very sarcastic sense of humor that can be taken the wrong way if your not use to it. Very helpful. Seems intimidating at first but very nice and loves office hour visitors. Really cares how well his students do, and challenges them to do better. You'll definitely learn from him and his class. Worth taking for sure.
He is extremely helpful, if you let him. He offers tons of practice files and genuinely cares about his students. If you have to take Organic, take it with Norris. He'll keep you interested for the most part.
If you want a career in chemistry, look no further, just taking it as a requirement, don't take it with him. He will challenge you to no end and you will be better for it.
The best there is to it. I love the fact that he tells the students that this class is based on conceptual learning, which makes it that much more interesting. If you want to be challenged and not afraid of working for you grade, go with Norris; you won't be disappointed.
I think Dr Norris is a wonderful professor. He can be sarcastic and tough with a big ego at times, however he absolutely knows what he is lecturing about and you can tell he loves what he does. I love his teaching style of asking questions to the class while he lectures. He really keeps me engaged and I must say I actually enjoy organic chemistry!
Peter Norris is a good professor, he knows his information and stresses to go to his office hours and will help you. However, if you are considering a career in anything other than grad school prepare for his discouragement. The class was very helpful and if you make an effort you will do well.
If you take organic chemistry with Dr. Norris, you WILL WORK HARD for the grade you get. He does not sugarcoat anything and is extremely straight forward. Encourages students to seek help outside of class and is mostly always available in his office. Tests are 6 pages long. Most answers require an explanation for full credit. No grades dropped.
I don't like his personality, and I believe his expectations for the average student are outrageous. You should go to class every day and study every day, if you don't do those 2 things expect a C or lower.
Fantastic professor, very sassy but he really knows his stuff. Makes class interesting and motivates you to try your best. Keeps you on your toes in class by asking and answering questions. Very helpful in office hours and has tons of resources available (videos). You will work hard for your grade but you will actually understand organic chemistry.
Dr Norris takes his role of preparing students for pre- medpharmaetc very seriously, and the course difficulty and depth of material reflects it. There is no reason anyone can't do well in this class if they put the time, effort, and discipline into it. Take recitation!! And see him in office hours, he has a whole different persona than class.
Dr. Norris has been the most helpful professor I've had thus far. He has a ridiculous amount of online resources to supplement the lecture, so you'll never run out of practice problems. He realizes he is preparing many students for the next level and takes that very seriously. Not an easy A, but this class will make you a better critical thinker.
Dr. Norris' course is worth the work.
I loved taking Ochem 1 and 2 with Dr. Norris. I wish he taught more classes at YSU. Great teacher!!!
umm he is not bad obviously knows his stuff however makes you feel dumb when you ask questions and when you go to his office to ask questions its just him blabbering and you usually leave there more confused then when you went in and sometimes he pulls questions on tests on things you covered in class for 2 minutes and never had any practice
You definitely have to approach this class differently than other ones you've taken especially Gen chem 1 and 2 - this requires practice every night. Norris has a true passion for ochem and is great at conveying the material, though he does teach fast at times, however he is super available for questions. how well you do depends on your desire
One of the toughest professors/classes I've ever had but Norris does a great job clearly explaining the material and being accessible when you need him.
He is one of my favorite professors and I learned a lot from his class. He really helps prepare you for MCAT, etc. makes jokes in lecture and explains things well. He will not like you if you aren't in recitation and don't go to office hours. Incredibly smart and passionate he almost convinced me to change my major. OCHEMs a tough class in general
He's the most knowledgeable professor I've had so far. He understands organic well and is probably the best person to take it with. It's obviously a very difficult course so prepare accordingly. Go to SI, office hours, recitation and do all online assignments on his website. This class isn't like others, but Norris helps make it as clear as can be.
Great teacher, really cares if you pass or not, will scare you into asking for help if you need it.
The 3rd exam only had 3 As unacceptable. He tells us to ask questions in class, but in reality he is trying to trick you so that you have less time to learn the other material, which will be heavily tested. He has said If you dont read this all weekend, you might as well not come to class on Monday. He tells you you are going to fail everyday.
Dr. Norris makes organic chemistry doable, but if you aren't willing to put in the work, he will make sure you know that you're going to fail. Can be funny at times, but is often very serious. Do the practice problems and practice exams, they help a lot.
You probably know that OChem is a very difficult class and Dr. Norris makes sure to remind you that unless you put in the effort you will fail. But he is a fantastic teacher and provides countless ways to succeed in the class. His website is extremely valuable and he always makes himself available if you need help. Overall, Fantastic Professor.
Dr. Norris is simply one of the best professors at YSU. He is a great guy who really cares about his students. Ochem isn't an easy subject by any stretch, but he makes it very doable with tons of online material and outside of class help. Office hours and recitation are strongly recommended. The ONLY way to do Ochem in my opinion.
From the start of ochem 1 to the end of ochem 2 less than half the class passed. Also there will no longer be SI.
Dr. Norris is a great professor. Ive only been at YSU for a year and already see how much better he is than all the professors Ive had thus far. If you dont understand something, go see him. He stresses going to office hours heavily and I highly recommend going. Its not easy by any means, but be prepared to put in a lot of work.
Dr. Norris is really an incredible prof. Ochem is a very difficult subject, but he has tons of available online practice, and is always available for questions in office hours. If you keep up on the content and ask him questions it is a manageable class.
Great professor. Pay attention and go to class. Read ahead and stay on track by studying every day. Use his website to study and ask questions during office hours. You will learn a lot, and have to study a lot!!!!
if he is not the best professor at YSU i will eat the 5 inch stack of notes i took during the two semesters
Took OChem 1 and 2 summer 2020, A in 1, B in 2. Hes really great when you start out but throughout the class I started to get aggravated with him; wants us to ask questions but either goes off on tangents so you dont know the answer to your question or makes you feel bad for asking. Funny, but condescending, scares you instead of encourage you
So attendance isn't mandatory, but you'll fail if you skip. He is very accessible outside of class, but don't go crying to him if you never take the time to ask questions and then end up flunking an exam. If you HONESTLY put in the work, you will succeed in this class. It's a tough class and difficult material, but with hard work its very doable
Dr. Norris is probably one of my favorite professors at YSU. Can come off as rude and condescending at times, but he really just wants you to do well. Ochem is no joke, so you really have to work, but he has a lot of helpful material in blackboard. Also, who doesn't love a British accent?
Dr. Norris is a truly exceptional professor! Organic Chemistry is notorious for being a difficult subject, but Dr. Norris provides immense resources, including his own time, to help students succeed. However, he will not hold your hand. Go to class, work hard, and engage in the subject; you will do very well and truly understand the material!
He is a helpful professor who cares about his students. Tries to make the class engaging and memorable. A good choice.
Dr. Norris is a great lecturer and he's great at answering questions in office hours. He also has an entire website filled with useful supplemental material. The more you engage, the more you will learn, and the harder you work, the more help you will get from him. Can be a little intense, but he's not a bad guy.
Made having class online due to Covid even worse. He would give us negative points and questions we got wrong on exams because he said we were guessing. Honestly the only grades were exams. Only like two people was even get an A on exams.
Dr. Norris is a very blunt person that wants only the best from you. Recitation is a must if you want to continue to OChem 2. Previous practice exams help to study.
Organic chemistry is regarded as one of the most challenging undergraduate classes. Dr. Norris formats his class so that students learn how to truly master material instead of memorizing everything. This can seem daunting at first because many people need to change their studying habits. Once you know how to study, organic is fun and interesting!
Dr. Norris is a great O-Chem professor! He presents the material in an eloquent and easily comprehensible way. He provides numerous resources and study tools and has plenty of available office hours to answer questions. Success in the course requires hard work and understanding. Overall, he is very knowledgeable, fair, and helpful.
I would take Norris if I were doing anything in the medical field. I am a chemE major and don't need to understand ochem as much as he wants you to. His exams rely heavily on understanding the material and he is a very tough grader. If you need to understand ochem, take Norris. If you only need to know the basics of ochem, take Jackosn.
To be blunt, worst professor I have ever had in terms of interacting with the students to make it a comfortable learning environment. Doesn't care about anything but ochem. Avoid taking it over summer, he is a nightmare x2. Very smart guy but extremely arrogant. If you can(summer) take Genna he is combo of jackson and norris and I learned very well
Peter Norris is an incredible professor whose classes truly separate top pre-med students from those who arent good enough! His course is tough but invaluable, teaching the skills needed to succeed in medical school. A challenging yet rewarding experience for those aiming to excel. If you are top of your class, you will succeed and dominate!!!
Study and work hard. Doing lots of practice problems and pinpointing your mistakes helps. Don't fall behind on material and keep up you will be just fine. Lectures were ok but one too many weird and unnecessary comments were made.
Pre-med major here. This class can be time consuming but do not fear! Put in the work and you will see results! Tutoring is a great option and good overall. Group study helps too! For lab grading criteria was unusual. They analyzed every little thing. Office hours were questionable and at one point was refused help which was unfortunate.
Just about the rudest professor on campus. Could of been much more professional in office hours. Some of the lab TAs were also rude and talked about the students. Lectures were ok for the most part. And recitations were ok too but grading could of been MUCH more lenient. Working and studying hard for this class is an obvious must plus go to class.
I took his classes in Organic Chemistry I and II. He is a great professor with deep knowledge who explains the reasoning behind every question.
Norris is a tough but fair professor. His class is challenging but rewarding - stay focused, use the resources like his website, and you'll learn a lot. Unstuckstudy was a game-changer for my study prep.
Made organic chemistry much more difficult than it needed to be. Attempted to make the course seem intimidating and convince students to withdraw. Harsh grading on tests. Even with tutoring I struggled, and I consider myself to be a very good student.
Take Ochem seriously!! Study the textbook before the lectures, and don't miss a single lecture. Go to tutoring, and don't take too many other heavy courses because you'll need a lot of time to study. Dr. Norris is the best professor I've ever had. He is the best teacher and appreciates manners and discipline. He forever changed my academic life.
The material and grading is fair for the course and he is good at lecturing. He is a bit unprofessional, starting the semester saying x amount of us will not pass and just saying to drop it. Many students will go to him and he will talk down to them or think they are a waste of his time. He could improve is etiquette toward his students.
