My favorite english professor. I was so determined to add his class no matter what. He wants to teach you how to think cri-ti-cally. He's intimidating at first but you have to get to know his humor and kind nature. It's worth it.
good teacher but not easy. great deal of reading (44pgs first day) but he is fair if you are showing up and showing effort. if you slack in classes stay away from this one...you will fail.
Easy class and not a bad guy to look at. You could do a lot worse with your critical thinking GE req. than Pappas.
Love this teacher! I can say the BEST teacher at College of Alameda. He may seem intimidating but he has a good sense of humor. He also gives homework everyday but it is pretty light usually reading a chapter or two then answering a couple questions. He is very clear about what he expects from his students and goes through all material!
He recently started teaching at COA again, he's an amazing professor. Very witty, he seems intimidating at first but he's very friendly. Gives out a lot of homework but overall he's clear about what he wants and is clear in lectures. He gives a lot of group work as well.
Clear on what he expects. You learn a lot and he enjoys to hear others point of view on things. Easy but assigns a lot of homework- the homework is easy. You'll learn a lot.
So boring, we don't learn anything in class. We just have discussion but never learn how to do anything. He doesn't teach and he assigns way too much homework. He's not easy at all.
Just attend his class and do all the work and you'll get an easy A. He's a very understanding professor and is willing to help students. Love him!
Very kind professor. Though he seems very intimidating he's a very supporting Professor with a great sense of humor whom will help you whenever you need assistance in class or in catching up. I struggled in his class thinking that I would fail but passed with a B. I have high respect for him. You will enjoy this class if you're into group work.
Very clear but not easy. As long as he is seeing effort he will try to work with you. He has a great teaching style that has you leaving each class feeling more developed intellectually. Assignments seem tough but if you stay attentive and listen to him you will be surprised at how quickly you can complete them. My favorite teacher by far.
He's the worst teacher ! Do not take him, I REPEAT. People says that he's an easy A but he's really not. A lot of homework and attendance is mandatory. If you're late, don't show up to class at all. I end up having a C for his class and I did all the assignments, showed up to class everyday, though, my effort was not seen. He grades really hard.
Best English Professor at COA. You will regret if you dont take any English classes with him. Total easy A. Just show up and you get an A.
At first he seemed intimidating, but he really isn't bad. He is actually quite nice, understanding, and also funny -- while being strict. He is a very good teacher and inspires you to think, rather than just passively taking the class. Assigns a lot of homework exercises, a couple of short papers, and a few BIG papers, which can get overwhelming.
A lot of essays and a lot of reading. He's pretty easy on grading and really easy assignments, but expects a lot out of his writing assignments.
The two books we've read in class have changed my outlook on the world. Very interesting and relevant class. I would highly suggest anyone take his English 1A class. He takes grading very seriously, and he has quite the strict late policy. If you put in some work you'll get a good grade. This class was very rewarding; I learned a lot.
Seriously do not regret taking ENG 1A with Pappas! I learned a lot this semester with him. He's intimidating, but he is quite nice & understanding. There was hw all the time (essays, reading, questions) which was overwhelming, but he isn't a tough grader as long as he sees effort. This class was basically media studies incorporated into English.
A lot of writing in his class. He gave good lecture. You have to register for his class early because he won't give the code for waiting list students. He taught you a lot about how Tv affect your perspective to the world. He does not give extra credit. No quizzes or tests. Only final and essays.
Pappas is an inspirational professor! He gives good lectures and there is some writing but not a lot. He teaches about looking at things from other preservatives and taking him is a life-changing experience! Quizzes and tests are not given! Take him for English 1A and English 5. Definitely, won't regret it.
Pappas is one of the harder professors, since he makes us read and write a lot for a community college class. STRICT on attendance and tardiness. Spends his whole life talking about how the media affects the way you think and act. He's a pretty nice guy, though. Not an easy A or even an easy B, but I learned a lot. Recommend!
He is one of the best English teachers I ever had. He makes us work in groups randomly almost every class for discussion, then goes "class level." His teachings are very clear and although this class was a 3-hour-class, I thoroughly enjoyed every single session. It is a must take class, and the teacher is very "critical" about the subjects.
He's a good teacher but he's one of the toughest when it comes to grading. You can put all your effort into an assignment but still receive a bad grade. He's extremely picky . I don't recommend him at all!!!
He knows what he's doing. He's specific about what he wants from a paper, but as long as you do your reading and research you'll be fine. He expects you to think and participate, but I didn't come to class a few times and I was fine. Lots of group projects, but he was pretty chill with us. He talks a lot about media studies and cell phones.
Mr. Pappas is a gifted teacher. His goal is to make sure that every student has a grasp of English - writing, speaking, and so on; by the end of his course you will have garnered enough tools that will serve you well beyond college. He's not an easy teacher or an easy grader, but, anything worth having isn't easy.
I took Pappas for English 1a this fall semester. What you'll find real quick is that Pappas is a very good teacher, he will constantly have you try your hardest just to impress him in the form of writing, and group work. I don't recommend Pappa's if you are looking for an easy A I recommend him if you are going to actually learn.
This class is very content-heavy, this is especially true in the hybrid course. Likes to laugh at his own jokes. Be prepared to read or google like crazy. Feedback is very vague.
Pappas is definition of a great teacher, although not an easy one. He really makes you think in different ways that is very mind-blowing. I personally like his humor. He makes mediocre topics seem very interesting. Despite his intimidating personality, he actually does go easy on the class.
Dr. Pappas Sets high expectations for all students, and he knows his materials . He is extremely passionate about the material and teaching it to his students. I learned a lot from professor Pappas and I really admire the way he makes his students behave in the classroom.
Professor Pappas is not an easy A, but more than likely you will learn a lot from being in his class. This is not the teacher for you if you are hoping for an easy A, Pappas will grade based on homework, essays, and class participation.
Pappas was one of the best professors I've had in a while. Not an easy class to take, but the challenge is worth it. If you want to take a class that's different from other English classes where you can actually learn something and can be put into the real world, take his class.
Professor Pappas is a real gem of a teacher, his class incorporates media studies and is a really engaging class. He assigns an assignment every class and is a bit of a tough grader but don't be intimidated, he makes you work for your grade but gives excellent feedback if you ask politely. He is also a pretty funny guy! Take his class! Its great!
he gives great feedback and makes sure everyone in the class knows what's going on with the reading. He's a tough grader but allows revisions and he will help make your writing better for sure. He thinks he's a funny person but his jokes are so not funny that they're funny.
I love Dr. Pappas! Harvard-educated and such an amazing man, professor, and lecturer! He really makes you think in his class, and my writing skills have definitely improved so much without his class being too much work. His class is super well organized, and he even remembers your name and gets to know you!
He is really chill and wants you to succeed which he makes very clear the first day. There is a ton of group work and you need to be prepared to work together. Make sure you type all your hw assignments in MLA and check in with him if you're feeling like you're failing. Read all the handouts and bring a dictionary. Do everything!
Very intimidating at first, but by far the best teacher I have ever come across. Definitely not an easy "A" class if that's what your looking for. He definitely puts you to work with writing essays, but gives great feedback, and has great "class level" discussions. I definitely learned a lot from his classes. Very beneficial towards my education.
Class was alright. As long as you put in the work and give it your best, you'll pass. Get ready to read Brave New World.
Always wanting to help you out. Had some personal problems and stopped attending class but he was so helpful and willing to work with me. Very funny and interesting, is a little intimidating at first but a very cool professor. I am definitely going to look to take him again once I sort things out. Last thing, he gives great and helpful feedback.
What everyone else said: Intimidating, funny, not an easy A. He is willing to work with you if he feels as if you're actually trying in the class. As long as you try, he is willing to give extensions and go easy on you. I felt that I learned a lot in his class. He wants you to think about things and connect them to everyday life.
His class both, 1A and 5, have an uncanny ability to relate to a lot of problems outside of school. This class is more than just a class for credit it is a class that will benefit you for the rest of your scholarly career and adult life. Do the assigned readings right away and read the syllabus for proper essay/hw structures and you'll be set.
Great lectures. Challenges you to think critically. If you want an easy A don't take his class but if you want to be educated he's the guy. I personally didn't pass bc of my attendance but this guy kept it real with me and sent me off with words of wisdom before I dropped the class. His words made me take my education far more serious.
Basically a media studies class. Not an easy Eng1A class at all, but he makes you think critically of media around us. You will learn and think about his life lessons and his stories. He earned his PHD from Harvard, and writes books as well.
I came to this site as well to get honest reviews, with the reviews I found here I decided to take his class, Now that I've completed the class I wanted to share some tips, always read, remember word count, he is a very tough grader, no excuses, you will not get full credit no matter how hard you try, overall he is decent, I would not take again
I thought Dr. Pappas was one of the best teachers I had through the Peralta colleges, even though it was an online class. He gives good feedback and requires you to think critically. He gives parameters and expects them to be precisely followed. I enjoyed his class overall.
Peter Pappas is an amazing teacher that makes you critically think about social media and its effects on society. He is a very funny and enthusiastic person who is passionate about teaching english. Getting an A in is class is very difficult but manageable. If you want to develop your writing and critical thinking skills, he is the person to take
Pappas is great . He gets annoyed calling him professor and will correct you . I dont know what everyone means by tough grader . Hes not that bad . Pay attention in class and youll do great . Alothough I received a C Im his class , was my fault because I missed a few assignments . But youll do great if you listen . Hes funny and awsome
Best english teacher I've had! He really wants you to get better as a writer/critical thinker and succeed which is why he can be a tough grader, but if you put in the effort you'll do great. I had a lot of fun times in his class during discussions and I'll miss it. Theres only 2 big essays and a lot of minor homeworks, but make sure you do them.
At first you may be put-off by his caustic comments but once the class thins he's quite good at what he does. Do your best, show up, participate in discussions, and put in the work. Pappas' was easily the best and most rewarding class I have taken at COA.
Do every single assignement. If you miss even one, that is a letter grade. Otherwise, he's fine.
I have never received below a B in English until I took his English 1A class. He grades very low on papers and has strict writing rules. I would not recommend his class at all. VERY STRICT TEACHER!!!
I like how the lectures and the grading were very straight forward. it felt like a high school class sometimes, but that could've been because of the class dynamic. You get to learn a lot in class and through the readings he assigns. Very tough when it comes to grading, but it isn't anything that's not expected from a good instructor.
Took him three years ago and in my whole college career his class is the only class where everything he taught continues to be relatable or applicable in my life. Tough grading but the red marks are red like the color of love! That's not a coincidence! Use his critique and feedback to become a better student, writer, person.
Don't take the online class. The course itself wasn't much work, but the assignments were vague and frustrating to understand. Canvas was also frustrating, because assignments were posted in different categories each week with no set schedule. Also, word limits were nearing the unreasonable, like 300 words for a complicated compare/contrast prompt
Pretty much what I expected going into the class. As long as you do the discussions and stay on track with the reading, you should be fine. He wants you to think critically, so make sure that your papers, etc. are thoughful!
The fact that he didn't overload work once covid-19 came about made me like him that much more pay attention to the feedback and the notes he leaves on your papers thats how you will pass be requires you to dig deep so get ready to do more than scratch the surface he has a lot of papers but this is a writing class
I used to go to a University but no class was as difficult as this class BUT this class his worth taking. He is a tough grader and there are only a few assignments but if you work hard you will get an A. I thought I was going to get a B but got an A. He wants to see that you're trying and thinking critically. Not much feedback on work tbh.
When I talk about this man I refer to him as the most inspirational professor Ive ever had. It might not look like it but he really cares, and youll notice by how passionate he is about the class. He really wants you to think. The class is hard but I not once complained about attending. Mr. P thought me that hard work really pays off.
Never in my life have I EVER seen an English professor who couldn't even give their assignments in proper English. I'm left scratching my head on how poor of English and vague the instructions are. Also barely assigns things and never tell you so you just MISS assignments. Only announces RESPONSE ROUNDS of finished discussions and nothing else. )^:
His online class is an incompleted class. He doesn't have a rubric for assignments. You need to figure out his taste. He will help you if you ask. And he assumes that you had taken other English classes like eng 1A and eng 1B already. Pretty much this class is pretty tiring and confusing.
I thought professor Pappas would be better considering his reviews but honestly don't take the online class I don't know about in person but online is not worth it. Basically, there is no teaching not sure if this is because of the level or just the professor. We just read and do essays and the text is a bit hard to understand or connect with.
Pappas is the worst English professor I have ever had. Instructions and prompts are vague and it's hard to understand exactly what he wants. Tough grader and won't even give feedback if you got points off. The required books are horrible and he somehow thinks we enjoy reading and writing about it. There is no positive in this class, don't take him.
He assigns a lot of work and the deadlines are so soon. Also, he has a strict word count limit I dislike because, for someone who enjoys writing a lot, his word count limits are quite unreasonable especially given prompts that ask for in-depth answers. Though in the end the class is doable and I don't have many complaints other than word count.
Dr. Pappas is at the top of my all time professor. He's very serious but at the same time very funny and completely understanding. He is a fairly tough grader but his class teaches you how to write at a college level. I really recommend him if you're willing to put in the effort. He makes you work for an A but you can get a lot out of the class.
I want to rate him 0 out of 5 but that isn't an option. Maybe he is a good person, I don't know but he never demonstrated he cared about us students or our growth. Only assigns vague prompts and grades late! His style of teaching is liked by some and hated by others but from my experience it was really bad. Would not recommend to anyone.
Professor Pappas holds high expectations for his students, and he often uses complex readings in his classes. He definitely makes you work for it, but he cares so much about his students. He's a tough professor, but I would suggest meeting with him outside of class for extra help (worked for me).
If you can handle vague instructions, strict word count, and more, you are ready to take this Professor. As for me, I was not lucky enough to have had these traits. A tutor who took him said he was great though, so I suspect my difficulty came from his online class. I bet he is a great instructor in person, but his online class does need some work.
The homework and research papers are very interesting. However feedback on assignments are left vouge. Thought provoking content. Hard grader. Following the rubric. Once summited, you don't get to resubmit. Great if you're fluent in English and not so great if you are not fluent in English. Books are reasonable at less then 20$. 7/10.
I took his class online due to the pandemic, he was okay. the comments he gave were really vague though, but if you follow his instructions then you'll be fine. A lot of writing/discussions and essays. You'll get an A if you put in the effort
This instructor is a very harsh grader for them not to give detailed instructions on what they want done. Assignments are very unclear. Word count has to be completely accurate and rubric has to be followed completely. Comments on assignments are also unclear and when you ask for elaboration so you know what not to do again he does not respond.
Grading criteria on needs more details but doesn't outline what need to be addressed really left us students struggling. Mediocre at best. Spend hours at the tutor lab and with tutors that have taken his ENG5 AND ENG1A and somehow there was always a problem with what I wrote. Sign up for somebody else as there are better teachers.
If you put in the work and actually follow instructions you'll get an 'A'. As long as you put in the work and try you'll do great. Comments are kinda vague, if you know what you're doing you'll pass.
I took this class a while ago but he's overall a good teacher. I wish he was better with communication. Overall not a bad class pretty easy.
This man is a joke. Only if I can rate him a zero. He extends the hell out of the wordcounts and the feedback he gives you on your assignments make little to no sense. I just wasted my time with this man, don't take his class. Look for anyone else I wish I got out before it was too late.
I had papers revised by tutors at the LRC and there was always something wrong with the paper. It's as if his grading policy is to pick some random line in the paper and mark it down to give the impression, he is reading the paper. I thought RMF reviews were bias and decided to give Pappas a chance. I regret that decision. Learn from my mistake.
Try asking him to explain how the essay doesn't match the rubric and he will be little you. He told me "Just read the rubric its self-explanatory" or " this is a college class, and you are not demonstrating you are analytical ". I thought RMF were biased. Boy did I learn this the Hardway. Research your professor prior to registration. I wish I did.
Hes not terribly hard, he grades pretty fairly. Only thing I didnt like was the outline he requires before an essay, they weren't clear at all. Other than that not many assignments.
I took professor Pappas class for Eng-5 (online) and you will need to buy one text book and he provides articles for papers. Weekly discussions are very good and will received extra credit participation points as long as you are engaging in class. There will be only 3 papers and professor provides clear instructions. Very good class overall.
Professor Pappas is a fair grader. Get ready to read. This is not an easy class. Not much feedback. Only one book is needed. Assignments are posted randomly throughout the course. Good Luck!
Dr. P assigns work you can't BS. Great educator. I Googled my way through the three other classes I took, but in ENG5, I had to work it out with my own thoughts. "There is no right or wrong answer" kinda teacher. It's not math. The book is easy to read if you have the audiobook ($15) and the Google play book ($20).
He assigned a book he clearly likes, but then marked students down for critiquing the opinions in that book. There were also no further readings, lectures, or any teachings outside of the book other than a single article from 2006. I don't feel as though my writing or critical thinking skills improved in this class, and I can't say I recommend him.
Incredibly difficult grader. The book was hard to understand and he makes you really work for your grade. Asked some questions through email and got a response to a question I never asked... very confusing. He is fair with grading (sometimes), but again, insanely difficult. Would not recommend.
I took the Summer class which I expected to be challenging. I believe Mr. P really wants his students to think critically and he structures the class in a way that requires you to. Ensure you are prepared for this class, as you will need to double check any due dates for assignments since they are not provided in the syllables ahead of time.
The reason for dropping his class was because his directions for his assaignments were unclear to me, Im a person to as question and for clarification. I would ask questions and he would respond to look at directions (as it wasnt already unclear). I did assignments & he would say I was missing things but not answer my questions. Dont recommend
No exceptions on anything. Incell ideation. dont waste your brain power to be told you dont know anything. be prepared to unlearn what you know.
honestly i rly enjoyed his class, only one book was required and at first i didnt much enjoy it but slowly did. i enjoyed writing the essays and all the other article assignments that were given throughout the semester. reading low grade reviews rly just show how people managed this english class. for me it was simple but challenging at times.
despite what people say, he's a good professor. he's hard, but he really breaks down your work and shows what you can improve on. you WILL have a decent amount of work, and at times his work is challenging. his instructions weren't too clear at the start of the sem, but after taking in feedback his directions and lectures improved to help everyone.
I had to comment and rate because I did really enjoy professor Pappas class. It can be tough and you have to put in the work but the readings and feedback from materials written are great and really rewarding. I really believe I came out of the class a better writer and a better critical thinker.
If, you are taking online 4 week class and you can't write somewhat good academic essays, don't expect a good grade, he states that in the syllabus himself. However if you have taken, some English courses and your grades were ok, then you will love this course.
At first I genuinely thought that he downgraded my assignments for my disagreement with the author of the book. But as the course progressed and I learned little more about academic writing, I reread my early assignments, and the grades, were, rather flattering. He is "army" straightforward which sometimes comes out as blunt.
He gives good feedback and responds to emails, but that's it. Technologically challenged; Canvas and every assignment on it are impossible to navigate. Parsing what he wants from you is harder than the actual work. The requirements of each assignment are incredibly hard to understand, but they do show that he cares about teaching. Weird priorities.
He's a decent professor, BUT THE ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS! Some assignments will have very vague descriptions, so perhaps dedicate some time to decipher them. Other than that, you will get an A as long as you complete the assignments on time with a decent amount of effort. Just do the readings and put some thought into the HW, and you'll be fine 👍
