very knowledgeable, laid back, and friendly. good guy and a great teahcer.
interesting class, keeps things upbeat so you don't need to take a nap
Very well versed in subject matter, interesting and fun until test time.
Very interesting class! Teacher is excellent. Lots of memorizing, hard tests.
Very Friendly and knowledgeable, repeats himself for clarity frequently.
Doesnt return email or projects or helps.Cool class but i left class on bad note
very hard prof, not enough tests, too much to learn, deathly boring lectures
great professor! enthusiastic, explains things well... tests are hard though...
good teacher ,tests hard if you don't review previous exams(on his website)
Great prof, very knowledgeable, and fun
No Comments
unhelpful, his lecture has nothing to do with the tests
good teacher, good lectures
No Comments
great prof, very friendly & encouraging, smart but long-winded
Horrible, out of high school and college this was the worst teacher i ever had.
Very clear and organized lectures
only 2 tests, so you wind up readinglike 15 chapters the nite before the exams..
so boring, always late.memorizing old exams on website=A
Worst class I've ever had. He has no clue about reality. Incredibly Boring!
studied my butt off and got a c+
very knowledgeable, interesting lectures, helpful, challenging
shares my last name, therefore is good.
Very knowledgeable. Will astound you with facts. Nice guy too.
very interesting person; take class if you have a chance; tests are kind of hard
Class is interesting, Roe knows his stuff; test are hard but you will learn
This guy is great. He made anthropology interesting, this was by far the most interesting anthro class I have had. He lectures are good, he knows alot and seems to really enjoy it. He gives you a website with old exams, it really helps.
The tests were kinda hard, but if you do the reading and take good notes you should do okay. Roe has some really interesting stories - he reminded me of "Wilson" on Home Improvement.
I've taken 4 classes with him cause he's such a great teacher. Really learned a lot in all the classes but especially enjoyed Technology and Culture and Ethnic Arts
Very Interesting class. Cares about students, always helpful after class and in office hours. Go to lectures = A
Prof Roe is by far the best professor I have ever had. He knows his stuff, loves teaching, loves the students and cares about you're learning. I've taken three classes with him and I consider him a mentor and a fantastic person! You'll be glad you took it
He's an awesome prof! His office is decorated too! Very clear in lecture, but tests are hard. He's so intelligent that he uses huge -- non understandable terms on the exams.
Not an easy course, but very nice teacher, wants everyone to do well.
not bad. gets alittle boring at times. would take again. try to go to all classes.
Knows EVERYTHING! Amazing to watch him lecture b/c he never has to refer to notes, just just knows it all. Class is pretty interesting. Two exams (midterm & final) which are okay as long as you look at the practice exam. Readings are a must.
knows a little about everything, which makes it easier to relate to things. real nice guy and makes class interesting... i never looked at the clock
nice guy, cares about students, talked to him many times after class about material, went to office hours for test help, funny, lectures off top of head, brung in artifact, videos, writes on blackboard, uses overhead, did not read textbook, studied notes and tests on website and got a C-. enrichment center
This dude knows everything! He never once looked at notes while lecturing. This is definatly not an easy course but it's a good one if you like anthro. You better study your ass off because your entire grade is 2 pretty tough exams.

very gregarious nice guy, interesting material although somewhat incoherent at times. Very difficult tests.
AH! HARD EXAMS. study!!! and READ!!! the lectures are amazing though, he never looks at notes, and even brought in visual aides like stuff he has brought back from his field work. really cool... i never dozed off, but the extra credit is prolly a good idea.. 2 exams, 50 mult choice each.
Exams are extremely difficult and the midterm and the final are your entire grade. But,he's a REALLY nice guy,and will help you out if you go to his office hours. One of the smartest professors I've had at UD,his lectures are extremely interesting and he knows everything there is to know about anthro.
Likes to jump from topic to topic, doesn't stick to syllabus. Always willing to answer questions in class, but often winds up on a 30 minute tangent. Exams are mc and not too difficult.
Only took the class for a Group A req, but was my favorite class at UD yet. Tests can be difficult for some, so reading and note taking is a must. Also, do the practice exams and extra credit, he uses the same questions from year-to-year. Teaches by memory, and is a very good and entertaining speaker...never thought Anthro could be interesting
Roe knows what he is talking about because he has experienced the antho field work. A very interesting guy, but the tests are difficult and 2 of them equal your grade. Study.
Soc. and Cult. Anthropology--one of the most boring classes I've ever had to take. Roe is very interesting, though, and very knowledgeable in anthropology because he has experience as an anthropologist. He make the material seem interesting. The two exams are REALLY HARD, and they make up your whole grade. STUDY LIKE CRAZY!
Very interesting teacher who knows his stuff. However, can go off on tangents and end up spending an entire class telling you about tribes he's worked with and how they believe they are killed in the night by horse flatulence. Still a fun class though.
Intresting professor really excited about what he does. Agreed he goes off on tangents but gives a****load of notes but he is so excited about the field that its ok. 2 tests look online on his website and he pulls several from there. Not bad got two B's out of the class.
Go off talking about tribes and things he's done which adds to the class. However, there's only 2 tests:midterm and final so STUDY
Awesome class. Awesome teacher. Take it!
Whoa doggie! Ok, this guy, 2 tests... midterm and final ONLY! Very easy to mess one up and be screwed forever. His notes as all over the place with little organization. Tests are on readings from text and outside sources, however, classes consists mostly of his field experience recollection. take it only if you can stay awake READ THE HW!
Roe is probably one of the most interesting people i have ever met. Has spent a lot of time in various placing living with and studying tribes. Only 3 grades for you entire grade so reading and taking class notes is a MUST. and be sure to take advantage of the easy extra credit!
Man made me want to kill myself over summer session. Talks over movies, notes are scattered, and unless you LOVE tribal nations, then staying awake is difficult.
He is a very nice man, and a good teacher, but has too much info in his head! He kept going off on tangents and never finishing his original thought. Kept falling behind the syllabus too, but gave easy extra credit options and very helpful if you asked him a question.
Very interesting professor. He'll go on tangents, but always finds some way to justify it with what he was saying earlier. He's also very prompt with ending the class, usually ending class a few minutes early. He'll just be giving his lecture, stop and say "...and that's it for today." I'd take his class again anytime.
Very intelligent guy, definetly an expert in the subject matter. Don't come to class tired because while he may seem to be off on a tangent, he might be making an important point. Limited material graded: midterm, final, and term paper; intstructions for paper are about as clear as mud. All in all good class.
Goes off on tangents as said before, but he knows his stuff. Had lots of reading to do, most of it isn't necessary. Pay attention in class, do the extra credit assignments and STUDY PAST TESTS! The whole class is based on 2 exams and a research paper, he posts an example midterm and final online. Go over them/your notes and write a good paper.
When you first see him you, he looks like a truck driver…Simply put, this was the most interesting course with the best teacher I ever had at University of Delaware. I would recomend him!
To keep it short and sweet the classes were great and so was he.3 grades consisting of 2 exams and a paper. He is very helpful and will give you great ideas for the paper. So far I've had 2 classes with him and it has been a great experience.Overall easy if you have an interest in subject and go over his notes and prac. exams.Don't need to read boo
Great guy. one of the most intellegent people ive ever met. talk about a guy that knows his stuff. just fun class. he is easy to take notes with. 2 50question test and a research paper. helps you as much as he can and is just a nice guy. didnt take atendance cuz everybody always came cuz it was fun. great guy dont skip over the class. read book lil
GREAT CLASS, very interesting, great guy, sometimes he repeats himself a lot though. exams are very manageable if you do the readings & go to class. LOVES what he does. ask him about his field experience.
Someone should tell this guy this is a 100 level class. textbook, and 2 other books in their entirety. 2 pretty hard exams. Yeah hes "cool" and "interesting" but id rather just have a class thats easy.
Attendance not mandatory but if you skip then you're screwed. Boring lecture- I fell asleep every class and still got a C. Hard tests but if you stay awake and read then you'll be fine. One major paper that is a big grade boost- make sure you do well on it. The paper saved my grade. Without it I would have probably failed. Showed a lot of videos.
This guy really knows his stuff and he is really interesting, although his notes are a little all over. HOWEVER, this class is not a cake walk. Even though I did my readings, went to class almost every time, and studied I still got a C on the exams. If you like learning about naked, primitive tribes, then this is the class for you.
hes a pretty smart guy, but this class is absurd. his notes are so scattered and he goes off on tangents about irrellevent nonsense. doesnt go over things on the test, goes over things not on the test. he just has too much information in his head. dont take this class if you expect an easy 100 level class. only two tests so its easy to screw up.
He is a very smart guy who is very knowledgeable on the material. HOWEVER, half the time I have no idea what he is talking about. He writes right to left, which as an English speaker, makes things difficult to understand. He is monotone and has the personality of a doornail. I would definitely not recommend this to anybody. This class is miserable.
He was an awesome professor. He really cares about what he's teaching and wants his students to get into the topic also. His tests were a little hard, really read the book and the key terms. Use the previous exams on his website and his summaries. I skipped class atleast once a week and still pulled of a B+. Nice guy, learn a lot.
He does know a great deal of info,go to class, nice guy, will help you,the two tests are 50 multiple choice, gives you an assignment for e.c. liked the video on the Yanamamo, Take Him!
you better LOVE anthro or fake it for this class. he knows his stuff...lived in the amazon, so he's not kidding. go to his office hrs bc i really think that boosted my grade. I thought I was getting a C in this class...got an A. HUGE paper due after 2-3 exams, that are not a breeze. know your stuff or you are screweddddd. besides that, real niceguy
He is a very helpful prof. that is very interested in his subject. Loved his way of teaching. A lot of reading, but if you like anth. you will not have any trouble.
i've taken a couple of classes with Roe and he's very good. he's extremely interesting to listen to and very passionate about his subject. he seems to be a very knowledgeable guy, and is very nice. plus his voice sounds like the guy on whyy
Professor Roe is brilliant. Hes really passionate about what he teaches. Even though the things that he is teaching are not familiar to us, the stuff he is teaching is the stuff that directly correlates to the reasons for everything we do today. He is NOT BORING. Everybody who gives him a bad rating is lazy or just not at all interested in anthro.
Awesome professor. Knows his stuff. He is basically indiana jones. Will learn some crazy/amazing things in this class. Pretty easy. Only 2 exams and 2 extra credit papers if you want to do them
just an absolute amazing professor and one of the smartest individuals I've ever met
I am in love with this man. Not as a professor, just as a man. As far as teaching goes, he is still amazing. You can tell by the look on his face when he talks that he's really passionate about this stuff. Doesn't use email though, and isn't too helpful if you don't understand the material.
Peter Roe is the best professor at Delaware hands down. Technology and Culture (222) was the most interesting class I have ever taken at Delaware and I'm a senior (having taken close to 50 courses). He is the smartest person you will ever have the privileged to listen to. Still, I got a C+ in this class due to the amount of memorization required.
Notes on board are disgustingly unclear and out of order, you won't be able to follow and piece things together unless you're paying attention 100%, notes end up being useless.Extra credit offered but otherwise he is completely unresponsive to email and not the easiest grader. Not the worst guy, but I wouldn't recommend for a group requiremnt/elec
Really good teacher. Makes the class interesting
I took this class by accident and somehow managed to get a B. He has a lot of books necessary for the class. He does not follow the syllabus, never stops talking throughout class, has no organization, and the board would be completely covered with words in tribal languages. There were only 2 take home essays.Worst Teacher Ever!
This is a horrible class. I took it as a breath requirement and ended up changing it to pass/fail. He writes on a board that looks like it hasn't been washed in 100 years and his writing is illegible. He only has 2 tests so if you mess up one you're done. I would not recommend this class at all
This class isn't difficult at all, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone. The notes are all over the place and so off-topic. Plus, with only two exams, it's difficult to sift through 2 months of non-sensical material. Offers some extra credit, though. Nice guy.
In order to do well you MUST go to class. If you want to have good notes to study from for the test just write down what he says when he's lecturing, not what he writes on the board. He literally tells you a good amount of the stuff you need to know for the test. So LISTEN. Do the reading, go to class, study and you will do well. Loved this class
I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT MISS CLASS!! I missed once and it dropped by grade an entire letter because of the notes I missed. You will fill tons of pages with notes and he puts the info word for word onto the final and midterm. Write down everything he repeats more than once. Otherwise he's a nice and likable guy, and he offers ex credit.
Didn't buy any of the textbooks, skipped a few classes, and still managed a C. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. I would have been fine without the books, but the notes I missed dropped my grade by a lot. Really nice guy, just a bit distant.
This class was definitely interesting. However, that is probably the only good part. The tests were hard and you only have two exams, a research paper and two extra credit opportunities. Definitely read the books and attendance is MANDATORY if you want to do well. He's pretty disorganized always late to class! I would NOT recommend him AT ALL.
He is a very nice guy. I probably would have done better in the class if I were more engaged in the material. His lectures are disorganized as he tends to ramble; I think this may be b/c he knows so much stuff and loves what he studies/teaches.
Roe is awesome, but you shouldn't take his class. The lectures were interesting, but had a hard time staying awake. You will never know when his notes are something you should know. only grades: 2 tough exams that you don't review and a huge vague research essay that the class won't prepare you for. Won't read email, can't use internet research
Quirky guy who wears cowboy boots and turquoise belt buckles. Definitely knows his stuff! Can't stress enough how important lecture notes are tho.. the entirety of the exams is from class. GO TO CLASS or else you'll miss so much. Probably could get by without books. He talks about them in class anyway.
His classes are interesting, however, the exams are impossible. He is very helpful when it comes to writing the essay though. I went to his office and he literally told me everything I needed to know to write my paper. Good guy, ridiculously hard teacher
Most interesting class I've taken at UDel, also the most impossible. His tests are confusing in that he uses terminology only he understands. You will be fascinated and think you're learning a lot in class only to be dumboundead on the exams even if you write down everything and study. Write a good research paper; only chance to boost your grade.
If you are taking Roe for a breadth requirement, it is NOT an easy A. You MUST go to class and there are only 2 assignments he bases your grade off of so if you mess up it screws up your whole average.
Classes are interesting, tests are harder than needed. Says he doesnt ask trivia but questions are in trivia form so its confussing. Offers extra credit that can help. Random questions from the readings that y wouldnt expect which makes studying pretty hard.
I would not recommend taking Roe at all. Only grades are 50% midterm and 50% final. He is disorganized and rambles in class. We had a textbook and 4 ethnographies to read. If you end up in this class do all the extra credit because it will save your grade. He does curve which is good though. But not an easy breadth requirement.
Nice enough guy, knows what he's talking about but he's a space case. It's almost impossible to comprehend the things he says. 10 page paper and 2 tests. Do the extra credit and the assigned reading, it'll make the class easier.
Try not to take this class. It can be interesting at times, but it is impossible. 2 hard exams and a 10-12 page research paper. Avoid this class. At all costs.
Roe is a great guy. Always 100% enthusiast about the subject. This class was nice because there was only 2 exams w study guide and extra credit optional. Study the guide day before and do well. 2 books that aren't so bad, i just read summaries.
Only 2 exams which are pretty hard given the material... He rambles in class and there are several required readings... Hard to tell what is pertinent and what isn't. Seems like a nice guy, but pass on this class unless you really need it.
Definitely avoid at all cost. Class is so boring and he just rambles on and on. Lots of assignments and he's all over the place. Overall the worst class I've taken so far.
Do not make eye contact. Do not start a conversation. At all cost avoid stepping foot into his classroom. Teacher ruined my life. The city of newark would benefit if he were't around to teach anymore
This class was interesting but extremely boring at times. A lot of the material he covers isn't even on the exam! I came to class all the time and always took notes for the first exam and barely got a passing grade. 2 exams 50% each with extra credit. I got A's in all my other classes and barely passed this class.
Roe is one of my favorite professors at UD, you will learn a lot from his class if you pay attention. Do the extra credit and study hard for the two exams and you will be fine.
It was scary that only the midterm and the final would result in your final grade, but he usually curves the exams grades AND offers 3 extra credit options that can raise your grade so much. The terms he releases on sakai before the exams are a very large portion of what will be tested. Awesome guy who loves what he does and pretty funny too.
Lectures were boring, as were the 3 books assigned to read. 300 pages about inventing the wheel were just too many, as were the other books page counts. Theres only 2 exams and a 10-page paper. Hard to tell whats important and whats not during his lectures, making studying difficult. The course is not worth the effort required to do well in it.
This class ruined my life. Take this class only if you hate your GPA.
