Very good professor. Cared about what he taught and did well teaching it. Very funny but it can often lead people to misunderstand him. Overall great professor and he is nice and caring person. I definately recommend that other students take his course.
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. He is very disrespectful and doesn't care about his students. He likes to say hurtful things to his students and their was many times i have left his class crying. If you want a good grade do not take his class. I have never had a more worse experience at Century College.
I've gone through accelerated english classes and passed all with a's. I go to a lousy english class at a lousy community college and i'm stuck with straight c's no if's, and's, or but's. Do not take!!!
English with Saiz is a difficult but rewarding experience. He pushes his students to excel, so slackers beware but I needed a jolt to get my boat afloat and now I am a more disciplined and effective writer. Saiz is tough but fair and he is funny at times too
Though he cares about what he teaches, he is a VERY confusing teacher. Most of the class got D's on our last paper. His expectations are not clearly defined. I'm a little curious: what crawled up his butt and died?
I am lost when I walk through that door in to his class, everything he talks about we are suppose to understand. When we got are papers back half the class was out in the hall talking about how poor of a teacher he is when it comes to grading we took time to make these papers, and the lest he could do is come around and help us fix them, but no h
very helpful, just the work is demanding.
The very first day I wondered what I got myself into. After that, I realized that his class is not full of busy work like others. He really has good intentions for us to learn. I actually enjoy class. He answers all of my questions, even if I email him three times a day about something.
This professor encouraged me to stay in his class, despite my absences and struggle with the subject. For that I am extremely greatful. i learned a lot about writing and myself, but without Dr. Saiz's support I might never had made it and just dropped out. Overall, he is a fine teacher and human being.
HERE IT IS: 1. Come to class 2. Show him you want to do well and improve your writing 3. Contribute to discussions 4. He puts up an intimidating front. DO NOT LET IT GET TO YOU! 5. I thought I was going to get a "D" up to the last week. I received a "B". Don't give up. Keep showing him you're trying. 6. He gives extra credit, but you'll work for it
If you're looking for an easy A to boost your GPA, this professor is not for you. But if you seek a great learning experience and the opportunity to enhance your writing skills, this professor is your match. Show up to class, complete all the assignments and papers, conform to his criterion, and you are guaranteed a B or even an A.
Good teacher, serious about teaching, knows what he is talking about. He was tough, but you learn a lot. I would recommend him.
he makes you feel like an idiot. he doesn't take the time to learn your name and treats students as grades.
He's not as bad as what people think. Yes, he can come across as condescending but towards the end of the semester he became very nice and closer w/ the remaining students who stuck through his class until the end. Attendence is not required but it's wise to show up to class most of the time. He takes the time to write comments on papers as well.
At first I expected to coast and learn little, but I soon found that I was actually going to work to simply pass. I progressed a lot and I did better than expected. I have to write a lot in my job, and am I glad I took prof. Saiz. I strongly recommend. Best prof I had.
Excellent professor. He's very knowledgeable and takes English very seriously. I've had too many "nice" teachers who wouldn't teach me anything. I love his teaching style: Very straightforward. One of the best prof's I've ever had. Despite the comments I hear, he's definitely a good person. My English has improved dramatically because I took him.
Outstanding professer. I enjoyed every class that he taught & I can honestly say he's the best professor I've ever had. English is a passion of mine now. He's very crystal-clear with what he expects & very experienced with his teaching. Intelligent man too.
Best professor I have ever had at the beginning I hated him, English had been my worst subject and after taking his class he has helped me become a better writer. Dr. Saiz is terrifying but he also cares about his students and he is there to teach and not to become your friend
Great teacher! I learned a lot in his class. He even helped me get a scholarship! Make sure to participate in class and you will do great!
O my gosh this guy is a hard grader. However, he is a wonderful teacher that knows how present the material. If you strive for a good grade in his courses you can certainly obtain it.
He's a real professional with teaching and he's very informative in his lectures. I never knew how much I could appreciate English after taking him. Easy to understand. Be sure to write down all his expectations (which he repeats numerous times) and you're bound to do well. He is intimdiating, yes, but he deserves a better rep on this website.
This professor is intimidating and belittling to his students. You'd beter have the right answer when he calls on you because he is not afraid of making you look like an idiot amongst your peers. Thank God I was already a proficient English student or else I would of dropped out of the course like many others.
This teacher challenged me all semester to learn, and I learned a lot. He appears intimidating but will work one on one with you. Best class and prof ever. Prepared me for the university, after I was just an average student.
he is a very nice guy and he will call u out and make u look like a idiot if he can tell u didnt read but he is a very good teacher .
This instructor doesn't give out more examples of the papers. He gets mad really easy. He has emotional problems! If you can't stand an instructor with emotional problems then don't take him.
No push-over, demanding and fair. Don't text talk or be rude in his class.
Saiz is an intelligent guy but he is really disrespectful to his students. He will call you out in non-joking way. Also, he grades super hard and has super high expectations. He will tell you that his grandpa and dad were also professors. If you disagree with his values in your papers you will receive a bad grade. Be prepared if you take his class.
Exceptional at teaching; I've gained a tremendous amount! Intimidating and belittles his students. It's a real shame. I was slightly confused over something and he made me appear dumb in front every classmate. Not sure if that gave him an ego boost, but it hurt me. Professors are expected to be RESPECTFUL. Everyone learns at different paces.
The course over all is fairly easy. Attendance isn't mandatory and he is really relaxed. He does call students out and makes jokes. Just keep your head low and don't make rude comments and you will be in the clear. He is very willing to help you and clarify anything if needed. Overall, a good professor and easy class to pass.
BEWARE THIS PROFESSOR IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Do not take him he is rude, disrespectful and if very conceited. He will call you out, embarrass you and try to make you feel bad. If you are looking to take a college level course as an adult DO NOT take his class.
i WOULD NOT recommend this professor, ever. Such a hard grader, rude, doesn't have the interest of the students in mind very much. He is very knowledgeable, but it's not worth it... seriously, take the course with a different teacher
Yes he is a hard teacher, intimidating, but I understand him, in a way where I can't explain, just cause he makes you look like an idiot doesn't mean he's mean, it means you are an idiot for taking the class and not doing anything in it. He's really a nice teacher and funny too. He's serious but understanding
Just one thing about him, lol, he needs to write more legibally, I cannot read his handwriting, though some, but not all, but overall he's a good teacher.
I got 99 problems, but Saiz ain't one of them. Loved the guy. Hard but fair so slackees beware and be scared.
He is a very smart person but he forgets that he is not teaching grad students. If he slowly teaches and makes sure students actually understand the material he teaches thoroughly, there would be a lower percentage of students dropping his class. Overall, he's a smart man who just wants his students to succeed.
The best part of this class is learning the four stages of writing. Learning these made me a better writer and student. This class has been eye-opening. I had actually thought about dropping the course, but am glad I stuck with it. Just during week one of the class I learned more about writing than i had in years of other classes. Eye opening.
One of the WORST professors of my life. His grading is beyond expectations. He grades hard and tough. Coming from a 3.8 GPA high school student, I wouldn't recommend this professor. Although he is some what nice, he isn't afraid to call YOU OUT for answers. It's as if he thinks he teaches at Harvard.
Avoid this guy if you can!!! He is condescending to students and his grading makes no sense. It seems that he gives bad grades on papers when he does not agree with your opinions. Graduated with a 3.80 GPA, but I got a C in this class.
My first thought of the professor was he doesn't like himself? He would really see the world in a whole different way if he stopped putting himself and others down. Anyways I feel sorry for the guy. He tries to be this hard ass, but he's a total slacker. You won't learn anything unless you read the book. I don't recommend taking his classes.
I wish more teachers taught like Saiz. passionate and energetic, and knowldgeable about his subject.
He's a slacker at the most. His lectures will be more about how you're a college student now, and time to stop slacking. He takes sick leaves and days off from my class it's been four days. Reading the book is best way to pass his class, and he won't even notice you're there in class.
One of the worst professors of my life, avoid this guy from this great college. I am 3.4 GPA student, and I have to graduate next spring, but by this guy, I ended up C, and I just want to advice for any hard worker minority student don't take his course. if you registered, drop it now. He is already confused, and his grading is confused too.
If you work very hard it pays off in ALL your courses. My grades improved everywhere. If you intend to feel sorry for yourself and sit on your hands forget about this class
He takes his personal life frustration out during class. Not a clear teacher as to what he wants to see on tests as answers. Don't question him.
He's very inconsiderate. Never struggled as much as i did in school untill I took his Comp 1 class. Would not recommend him if you want a decent grade. Luckily his cat ate one of my essays and gave me an A. That saved my butt. All the other comments below who think he was good are obviously geniuses. Don't take my word for it if you dont believe me
His class is definitely not easy. I struggled at first but mid-semester was able to understand and receive better grades on the quizzes. Do not correct him about grammar, student did in my class and we reaped the consequence. Definitely handled the situation immaturely but got over it in a few weeks. Great teacher though, full of passion & sarcasm
He knows his stuff, that's for sure. I learned a lot from his class and I feel like I'm a better writer because of him. However, he is rude, arrogant and loves to try to intimidate his students. Just do the readings and assignments and try not to make eye contact during class and you'll do great... Or just find a different professor.
Some students seem to struggle and I thought I would be one of them but his class makes my week more interesting. I find interpretations and he builds on it. Literature was intimidating but I work hard and I trust him and he meets me halfway. I love to come to class
Saiz is a very strict grader. He pushes you to be a better writer through in-class exercises, thorough textbook use, and essay examples. I had two classes in the same semester American Lit and Comp 2. I would suggest staying away from taking two classes because of the amount of work. Otherwise I grew a lot as a student.
I took Dr. Saiz for Comp II, Fall 2014. I ended up withdrawing from his class because he made me feel inferior. I am planning on being an English major, and I felt like his criticism was not said to be constructive, but rather said to be spiteful. He is generally egotistical and crabby. I would not recommend taking his class.
This guy is very Arrogant. He accused me of Plagiarism even though he lost my sources that were attached to my paper. When i approached and said i have my sources and that i can verify, He turned the other way. would not recommend.
He seems like he's been doing it for too long. He kind of makes everybody inferior, and he seems quite derogatory at times and is not careful with what he says. He's a tough professor to have, an incredibly tough grader, but most quizzes are open note and if you do what your told and you show that you really try in your writing, you'll do alright.
Worst Professor I've ever had. I did everything that was asked of me, asked questions, did my homework and studied for the tests but it was never enough. I had a 4.0 going into his class but had to drop. He yelled at me for correcting him on an answer he marked wrong on my test even though I had it correct. Constantly condescending and arrogant.
I loved this professor because he helped me all the way through. I came to his office hours and I found him modest and patient. I am grateful he spent so many hours and I even teamed up with another classmate for extra explanation on tests. If you don't act self righteous with him he is most respectfull. Earn your grades don't demand them:)
It was a big step to climb but I did it! Corrections sting at first but when the dust settles and I feel in control of my writing I am totally grateful to Dr. Saiz. Not so good for your GPO at first glance but I foresee it will in the long run. His rec. letter gets you accepted too.
Saiz is a RUDE man. He makes fun of students, puts themdown. Has nothing nice to say about our Dean either. There is no clarity when it comes to his interpretation of a story/poem. Tests are only 8 or 9 questions. If you miss 1 you automatically have a B. It is HIS SPECIFIC ANSWER in HIS words or it's going to be WRONG. No ifs, ands, or buts. Awful
He is a jerk. Criticizes students in a negative way and is not clear or constructive at all. At one point 3/4 of the class was failing because the comprehension of the tests is nothing like the lectures. I did a presentation and was told that it it wasn't my own work, gave me a C-. I couldn't believe it. Interesting class;Tyrant of a man. Stay away
Saiz is an awesome professor. He knows so much and makes difficult texts ultra clear for you. I now have a much better understanding of how to analyze literary works thanks to his guidance and unflagging erudition. Amazing teacher. So gifted intellectually!
He is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Claimed I stole someones work when I did not. He is the biggest jerk I have ever met. Take this class if you ever want to lower your GPA and get nothing out of it! Never has a clear grading criteria, he would tell you one thing then the next day its a new thing.
Stay away.!
Professor Saiz was quite difficult to take in. His grading criteria was never specific and it was not easy to understand what he wanted from me. He has good intentions but I think if you were considering a class of his you should reconsider unless you are willing to work VERY VERY VERY HARD!
He gives clear corrections with page reference and details. Overwhelming compared to school but I like the possibility to take free credits. I stuck it out and I don't regret it. You need to work hard but he wants us to succeed past his class. I feel I can write now. I know I can cut it in college now.
A lot of people would say he is a bad teacher. But, after reaching a respectable maturity level, I realized just because a class is hard doesn't mean the teacher is bad. Do you actually expect to learn? Do you want to get better at writing, and improve? You will become a better writer, but you will have to try. You're in college. Buck up.
Class wasn't too difficult. He just seems grumpy a lot of the time.
Read the assigned pages over at least two times and take super good notes. Summarize certain words and passages in the readings because the quiz's will ask for that. This teacher is pretty aggressive and grumpy, so I suggest you just do your work and get out. This class is more of a self taught type class and that depends on how much work put in.
Potentially the worst professor you could get. He would yell at me and other students for the strangest things. He thought it would be funny to pick on a student with dyslexia at one point. Work very hard on papers and still fail. Meet the requirements he explained, still fail. Overall a terrible guy. Saiz if you read this please take a step back.
Greatest professor I have ever had. I have actually learned more that semester than all English classes in highschool put together. Tough grader. Students need to show work ethic to gain his respect. If I could go back I would take the course again! It can be stressful but it's totally worth it. I definitely miss that class!
I really dreaded this class everyday. He made me hate writing. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS OF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE. he is mean and arrogant. JUST DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! literally the devil in english teacher form.
get organized or you will sink not swim. Learnt a lot
The instructor has a wild passion for the subject; I guess that aiight, but he gots to understand others may not share his passion for a dull composition class. I . struggled all semester and was only saved by the writing center peoples. It ain't fair to a brotha to demand so much out of us when our teachers in high school taught us nothing,.
He is a horrible professor, he expects you to learn at a doctrine level. I took another class and passed ,highly recommend any other teacher !
Composition with Saiz is a fight for survival. i was a pretty good high school student with AP Honors English but this class was a death march. The essays are long and complex with detailed rubrics which are unquestionably difficult. I never received more than a C on any paper which I spent hours on with the writing center's help. Brutal.
I took Saiz's COMP II which a semester's worth of rhetoric and research. He is a hard man. The work is incessant, something due every week, either a test, rhetorical analysis, or an essay. It is an unforgiving class. I recommended it to driven, able students with a penchant for logic and conceptually driven learning. I learned a lot though.
Saiz taught me genres are just as important as writing itself. I am a much better writer now. Everybody struggles at first. But in the end we all got better.
Honestly, I struggled in his class because his expectations are too high. I know that it's college and college level is expected, but I just came here to get my AA not my Masters. He's a very tough grader and looks for people who think, write, and know what their doing, like him, which definitely is not me. I was late in registry, it was a mistake..
My buddy and I don't see the time pass in the Shakespeare class. The information he gives is not for the sake of information, it relates to the scenes we focus on. We can be interpretative and creative. I did not know a class could be so much fun
Yes, he's a tough grader, but if you give him a chance he'll change your style of writing drastically. If you want to challenge yourself take this course. He stays on track and keeps you engaged. If you miss a class or two you're missing on hands-on activities which are vital to succeed in the class. Overall he is a good professor.
Quick Disclaimer: He absolutely despised my class. So, I'll admit my class didn't participate all that well, but speaking as the obnoxious kid in class who has all the answers, he sucked. He gave good feedback, but he gave GRADED learning activities/quizzes that were EVERY CLASS on material we would learn THAT day. Walked out with a B in a Comp I.
Take one piece of advice: DO NOT REGISTER FOR A CLASS WITH THIS MAN! Don't read any further down the page, just stop and re-register for a different professor RIGHT NOW! He was the worst instructor of my college career and I will never forget how awful the class was (keep in mind we're talking about an introductory writing class).
His class has been the most useful class I have ever taken in helping me to write. The feedback I got back on my paper was golden. Overall, his critical comments on punctuation and sentence structure really helped me to learn to write.
Looking forward to my next class with him. I never had a more caring, thorough, dedicated professor. I learned a lot. I am so grateful that he was so so helpful. The book was well selected. Be prepared to write a lot :)
Trust me. Do not take any class with this professor if you hate being harassed.
Was a long time ago that I had this professor, maybe 5 or 6 years and I still remember him to this day because of how awful he was. Way too difficult for a Composition I course.
