Tells you that your opinion is wrong. Runs his English class like a social issues class. Gets mad if you don't know the right answer.
best teacher i ever had
HIS THOUGHTS ARE CORRECT AND YOURS ARE WRONG. ALOT OF READING THAT HE DRILLS THE CLASS ON. LIKES TO PUT DOWN STUDENTS AND COMPLEMENT HIMSELF. HIS BETTER THAN GOD ATTITUDE TURNED ME OFF.
will look to validate his modern policital views in any work of literature. its ok to see plato is a moron even if you agree with one little portion of his rhetoric, pete. america isnt the devil, buddy
Not recommended for most upper middle-class pampered girls and boys. He questions your values, questions capitalism and the foundations of our value system and makes you THINK. Yes, think! Great professor -- great individual.
He does too much vocabulary and says irritatingly how you will thank him later. way too much reading and be prepared to write 48 pages worth of papers during the semester. Also preaches his political left wing opinions and if you dont like it too bad
yes - his english class is more of a political issues class and there is quite a bit of writing but he has some good left wing ideas. This is a good class to take unless you are a moron republican who cant stand to deal with the fact that you suck.
I had him freshman year- really helps you learn how to write a good paper- that is very helpful to the reast of your three year
He was very opinionated and that's the way he taught. He talked way too much about war and how he was anti-war.
I had mixed thoughts on him.. I got an A in the class, and I felt I learned much about war, but he taught it more like a social issues class.. luckily i was anti-war.. he tended not to like those who weren't..
Leftist democrat. We talked more about the war with Iraq than anything else. Those who were anti war seemed to be favored. Still a good professor.
Oh man, did this guy make me mad. I had him when we decided to invade Iraq, so I heard it good. I'm on the conservative side, so he picked on me. I annoyed him by writing A papers and peppering them with pro-war sentiment.
he speaks louder when you don't know something and expects you to magically find the right answer.
The Doc is a great teacher. I would take any class he teaches. He will improve your writing skills. Do the homework; be prepared for class. If you can back up your opinions, he is receptive to opinions that are not the same as his own.
Personally this is my favorite class because English is my best subject... he's a great teacher and I'm really learning a lot about social and global issues... but I'm learning the exact same things in my SOCIAL ISSUES class
take his class for college english.. also take social issues that same semester.. u read the same book, and talk about a lot of the same stuff.. all his work might be overwheming at first but he helps you a lot and he makes you think. great teacher!
I think his class is very fun to go to and learn about media and current world issues, however he is a bit of a grammar nazi. He would rather have you write a paper that is mechanicaly perfect rather than a paper with a good statement.
College English Or Social Issues? I don't think the he knows which class he is teaching...if you don't like politics and your not a liberal democrat, don't take it.
good class. he hleps you become a better writer.
This class was awesome, except for the fact that NO ONE participated!! He is very interesting, and encourages class discussions, which is better than a lecture. I'm here to learn and everyone else came to class to not get an absence, not to participate.
Professor Scheckner is very political and hates Bush. His class was fun though, and he was a fairly easy grader. Never had to much work due at once. Alot of in class debates and discussions. Only had 5 3pagepares and 1 10pgr,but no final or midterm.
College English is NOT the title of this course, he teaches you NOTHING about English. If you don't care much about current issues or the newspaper (which is almost all you read) get out while you still can!
I had him a few yrs back, everyone except for me and 2 other students dropped the course. He continuously hounded us to answer his pointless questions.
Call it current events not English. Preaches about America not where the comma should go. Boring but if you bring a magazine or something you'll be ok. Easy grader. You can BS an essay and get an A. Take him for a good grade but be prepared to be bored.
What a horrible man. Though he is rather easy, you want to end your life as you sit in his class. HORRIBLE, stay away if you can.
a VERY hard grader on papers, but overall a nice man. do not take him if you want an easy A. you will dread going to his class.
ok... I got an A in the class and I still hate this guy. He's a jerk, it's as simple as that. If you feel like being talked down to and made to feel stupid all the time (which I didn't really, but it bothered me what he said to other kids) then take him. You better hate Bush too.
Ok really he isn't the worst teacher in the world, but he in no the best. He gives you so much readings to do. half your grade is a journal which sounds easier then is it, but still really isn't so hard. The research paper is ****.
tough class, not a typical english class. all u read is anti-bush essays and editorials. the class is not about learning english, its about learning what the wars that the us is currently in. have to keep a bs journal that is much harder than he makes it seem, and the final is a bs research paper.
can be condescending to those unprepared for college and those afraid to disagree with him. do your work, stand your ground and edit your papers.
50 page journal which sucked, 100 word vocabulary list and bs research paper...i worked hard and got a disappointing b+ but the class was still somewhat interesting...alot of unneccessary reading
Don't take this class if you're looking to study english and learn to write good papers. You have to write a ridiculous 50 page journal (which you can BS) and a 10 page paper (also BS). Not the hardest english class you could take, but don't expect an easy A. I did most of the work and got a B.
This is not an english class. All we do is read stuff about politics. But, he is a good guy, his class is interesting, and the work-laod is ok. 50 pg Journal, 100 vocab words, 10 pg research paper, and other random other stuff.
very nice person! but be ready to do a hell load of hw!! 50 pgs journal, 100 words vocab list, 10 pgs final paper, and tons of reading!! but you can bs on all of them!! take him if you like to do lots of work and participate in class.
great personality once u crack the shell. too much reading about nothing. very political...i thought i was taking a history class. 100 word vocab list. 50 page journal and a bs 10 page research paper based on editorial pieces. all in all an okay class!
One of the most boring classes of my life with the most irritating assignments. Doesn't give due dates, doesn't hand back papers in a timely fashion. Awesome that you can revise a paper as many times as you want. Very politically minded...
Great guy.. wants everyone to learn about everything! 8-10 pg paper, 50 page journal, 100 word vocab list, reading (all short stories and essays none longer than 30 pgs -most very interesting) and quizzes on the readings (very easy!!!) You can bs the journal.. trust me! he barely looks at it and its half your grade!! I did all the work and got a B+
This is definately not an english class. We read a book that was basically a history book and the 10 page paper you have to write is based on editorials alone. Nothing here we really did had anything to do with literature or english, it was just your opinion or how you felt about the readings. You also have a hundred word vocab list due by the end of the semester (easy) and a 50 page journal (also easy to ****) all in all i was not a big fan of this class. too much work about nothing.
so if you're interested on taking a class on history and editorials, take this one. it had not much to do with english, well in fact not really anything at all. only good thing was that you could revise your papers and hand them in for a better grade. all in all, i couldnt wait until the semester was over.
HORRIBLE CLASS! Definitly not an english class, I do not even know where to begin. Does not grade the papers you write, just the first and last page if your lucky. You have to do endless amounts of work, and he gives HARD quizes on readings which are pointless, boring and the minimum of about 70 pages. DO NOT take his class.
Scheck is a funny guy... he's laid back and pretty chill. The whole class is pointless and the fifty page journal was a drag but it was wprth it
Scheckner is a great guy. His class was not your usual English class, but I think thats what made it so interesting. The readings can be a bit boring, and the papers are a drag but he doesn't really grade them anyway, so anyone should pass this class.
I am not a fan of Scheckner, and I definitely would not reccomend him to anyone! A 50 page journal which is probably graded only on quantity and nothing else, and it was a complete waste of time.
I'm certain that he gave me a lower grade only because of my political background. I went to every class did all the homework well and on time and even did extra credit work only to get a much lower grade that I should have gotten, no question about it. I make the Deans list almost every semester for a reason. This guy didnt help my learning except
I really don't like this class. It's really hard to sit through his class for 3 hours. And he gives you a lot of freakin reading every week. And i really don't like the papers. there is one every week, but we are going to the Metropolital Museum of Art. YAY!
Had him for College English and I hated him, the class discussions are all about politics which is interesting but there is one term paper and a 50 page journal. There is nothing there to actually help you become a better writer. Lots of reading, lots of busy work, couldn't stand him. Avoid him if you can.
This guy is awesome. I felt like he was my mentor to life. He takes each piece we read and applies it to the problems we as a society face. Very liberal which was a plus. CONSERVATIVES STAY AWAY!
If there Are TWO words that describe this class best they would have to be ENTIRELY USELESS. If you take this class prepare for backbreaking work and pointless classes. And like that isn’t bad enough, you learn absolutely nothing about the English language, what so ever. The class was three hours, and all we ever managed to accomplish was to go
i would say TAKE HIM! he is really nice and always gives you the option to rewrite papers or do stuff for extra credit. no final or midterm. 2 research papers that weren't too bad.. 4 essays.. we watched 3 good movies.. the only bad thing about class was that it was three hours and sometimes difficult to sit through but it is definitely do-able.
He's a nice guy who tries to help, I guess, but he's never quite long enough to hear a question or an opinion. Always says that he wants to have a discussion class, but ends up never shutting up. You can redo the papers, but don't expect much difference in grade. Never know what final grade will be though. Watched sooo many movies. Waste of time.
Brilliant Man. His class is so entertaining and he is EXTREMELY passionate about his teachings. His reading assignments may seem overwhelming, but the literature he assigns is brilliant. He always answers all your questions and explains thoroughly. (Plus he takes his classes on trips to the city!)
ALOT of reading as long as you read give feed back on the work and hand in your papers you will be fine.do the journal as you go along it makes it so much eaiser. he really knows his stuff and is willing to help and accomadate you... JUST BE READY TO READ ALOT
Took the English novel with this guy and it was such a fun class. He made the lectures very entertaining it was like a book club every class were we talk about the book topic were on. Expect a lot of reading though but well worth it. Four short papers and a large journal was required but overall a great teacher.
I loved this class! There is a lot of reading but most of the books are very interesting and enjoyable. You have to write a 20 pg journal and write 3 papers but if you keep up with your work you'll be fine. He's a tough grader but he allows rewrites. Take him if you can!
Absolutely fantastic. Seriously the best professor I've ever had.
Prof. Scheckner is very liberal. If you have any views that are against his and you turn in a paper expressing them, expect a c-. It's his way and the rewrites do absolutely nothing. He is never clear on what is the topic or how to write a good paper. It is current events class not College English too. He is tolerable but I would not take him again
This is my second time taking Scheckner and I will take him again if I can. I hate poetry, but he makes it interesting. You write a 20 page journal, you have 2 papers that you can rewrite, and the last Friday of every month you read your own poetry. P.S creates a friendly environment and you quickly become friends with your classmates.
This man is not QUALIFIED to teach English. The class was three hours long and all he managed to do was read us the New York Times and tell us how great it is. Oh, and don?t disagree with him on ANYthing or it will reflect negatively on your grade. Allows revisions for papers, but that?s amusing seeing as he never actually reads the first one.
The man just would not be open to any idea besides for his own. He lived inside a bubble of his own thoughts and believe the book he EDITED was the best book ever. His grading is unfair and biased. He has his favorites. Would not take him again. Rewrite is a useless mind trick to believe you could get a higher grade. Watched some decent movies
First of all this class in all honesty wasn't too bad and the readings weres somewhat interesting but at times long-winded for a gen-ed course. Being a communications major he is definitely a a hard grader and every paper i did wasn't good enough for an A.Overall its an okay class easy vocab quizes etc.
Hates any ones' ideas but his own. Loves the sound of his voice. Never clear as to what you should be doing. I spent 14 weeks of my life wondering why i was in that class. Dont take it if you need intruction from a teacher, but take it if you can speak moron
I've taken Professor Scheckner four times. Not only is he an excellent teacher, he truly cares for his students. He's more than understanding and willing to work with anyone who comes to him. There's a fair amount of work, but its expected because we're in college. I don't know what all these ridiculous ratings are about, but Scheckner's the man.
Very interesting. He may scare you a little, but he teaches english from an interesting angle. The readings and assignments are to get you to think, and I guarantee you will. Lots of writing, and at times he's a bit confusing. Despite all that, he's a good guy who is passionate about what he teaches. You'll get a lot out of his class.
Dr. Scheckner is a great prof. While he can be extremely blunt sometimes, he's a very nice person. He wants everyone to do their best. He can go off on tangents at times, but he still keeps it interesting. We had 4 papers, 4 critique papers and a journal. It's a pretty laidback class. Can't wait to have him next semester!
Scheckner is the man. I didn't do ANYTHING the entire semester. I missed like 8-10 classes and NEVER read the assigned readings. I texted in class and didn't hand in but 2 of 11 quizzes. He gave me a 'C' for the final grade. He is helpful and funny. The class is tough and I am suprised I got a 'C' . Take him if you can. Very nice man.
He was one of the worst teachers i've had. He was not clear about anything he wanted in his papers and i found him extremely difficult. He grades papers extremely hard.
He is not always very clear about what papers should be on or what is due in class. Contradicts what is on the syllabus regularly. He's a nice guy and grades pretty easy. Also he lets you rewrite all of your papers.
English is my best subject, I received straight A's in it all my life. Then I took him. It felt like a history class,he makes you use the book he wrote,self-centered.He wouldn't even grade my papers, he'd hand them back and write re-do on every one. Still don't know what the man wants. Have fun with him.
He's always writing up new assignments for class the night before. I don't check my email that often. And he expects everyone to know everything.
I really enjoyed him for Readings in Humanities. At first I could not stand him and thought he only wanted to hear his thoughts spoken back to him. But he wants to challenge his students to think more and really do the work. He will allow rewrites for all papers countless times and will let you hand them in late.
Stay away. Stay Away. The guy is crazy. He screams at the class. Yes he is passionate, but he takes it too far. He grades papers incredibly hard. Assigns an incredulous amount of reading. Give him his opinion or you fail.
I had this professor plenty during my Lit degree at Ramapo in the late 90's. Yes, he is tough and no this is not an easy A. But he is intense and thorough and his goal was always teaching us how to think and interpret for ourselves. I am a writer today and so glad I had this professor!
Nice guy. Does not go by the syllabus, so he is very flexible. Watch good movies in the class and talk about important current events. A lot of papers but they are not difficult. The class featured a lot of political discussion. No final exam.
He's a great guy and is knowledgeable but take an easier class for a gen ed. He gives way too much work and will email you the day before with extra assignment. He's a really hard grader. Half the things he asks for are opinionated but will mark them wrong. If you want an A don't take him. 20pg journal due at the end of semester
Dr. Scheckner is a very respectable man and his expectations of us (although overexaggerated) were clear from even before we entered the classroom. He assigned a total of 6 essays (cut down to 4), a 20-page journal reflecting on readings, articles, etc., and a 6-8 page research paper. You are allowed to redo any paper so it's easy to get an A!
He is pretty lenient and lets you re-do papers. He also allows extra credit. The class itself has a ton running so be prepared to read and also write in detail essays. Other than that, he is a good professor with good values.
Do not take this class! 20 page journal at the end of the semester, lot of reading, gives huge assignments the night before class. Strict with attendance and bathroom trips... Does not follow syllabus.
You either love or hate him. The class is very discussion-based so be prepared to talk about politics and social issues. He also doesn't follow the syllabus most of the time except for when essays are due. He's very precise and detail-oriented about the format of the essays and will almost always find something wrong, but he'll give a good grade.
Nice guy, very knowledgeable. If youre looking for an easy class then dont choose him, but if you really want to learn and really enrich yourself then do it. He assigns many papers, but never without a good purpose. He gives clear grading criteria and is approachable about grades. Lets you resubmit almost everything for a better grade.
Funny guy, interesting class. Shows good movies and makes you read good books. Gives a lot of work for a gen-ed class, however, you can resubmit any work any amount of time to get a better grade. Easy on deadlines, and conducts discussions and debates in class which are fun. No exams or quizzes, just do your work and you will have a great time.
Scheckner does not give ridiculous amounts of work, however you will have to read some books for this class. There are 5 short papers, one 6 page research paper and a 20 page journal covering all the works you have done in the class (which isn't really that bad if you don't procrastinate). He is an understanding prof and would recommend!
emails assignments in the day before they're due. Yells a lot, not out of anger but it puts everyone on edge. Gets distracted constantly, very political and historical. Sometimes upset when students don't know things he thinks you should, relevant to the class or not. Yelling puts me off enough that I wish I'd taken a different class
If you want to be screamed at for no reason at all every class, give this a shot. He wants people to be passionate, but only if your opinion is his opinion, too. So many books that just get breezed through, and gives zero guidelines for the papers other that to write about the books/movies. It was lit and film, but really more lit and politics.
If you like getting yelled at for not knowing every definition for every word in existence or for having your own opinion then this professor is the one for you. Going to class terrified that anything you say can easily be harshly criticized is probably not something you want to put yourself through. Not a class I look forward to or enjoy.
Watch out if you don't know everything about politics and whats going on in the news at the moment or your head will be bitten off. You'll be writing a paper a week with no instruction and a syllabus with spelling mistakes and wrong dates. Get ready to be publicly attacked with all your mistakes in your papers.
the mental trauma i have from this class has lasted far too long. open up your mouth? everything you say is wrong. prepare to write until your hands fall off your body. no midterm, no final exam. instead, you have an insane amount of tears falling onto your keyboard from typing a copious amount of essays. take a different professor. i beg you
embarrasses his students. lots of reading. not forgiving on grades. criticizes to the max. makes you feel dumb. felt more like a politics class.
