worst math teacher ever
Terrible Professor!! Not helpful at all......
59 students started, 11 dropped, 7 received 0.0. Overall gpa fall 2002 not counting 0.0 was 2.07.
sorry, I had a good experience, after BURKE anybody was good, he tried to explain and was open to questions, at least I passed this time around, general fail rates are 80% no matter which teacher you have
So he's really a Calc teacher. Why in the hell is he teaching begg. math? He was horrible! He looked down on everyone. Don't take him. He talks to much about things that dont relate. HIs test .ha nothing like u expected.
worst experience ive ever had. Hard to understand. He didn't teach me anything. I got a o.o from him than I took the same class with another professor and got a 3.0
No Comments
I did all of my homework, went to class every day, asked questions, and went to the academic skills center. I have a 3.5 gpa mind you and I still managed to fail every one of his tests. The material on the tests is very hard and mostly theory.
Very hard to understand, he usually teaches a higher level math class so he expects everyone to know everything already. I managed to get a failing grade on every single one of his test, and also recieve a 0.0 in the class...do not take him.
Multivariable Calculus class: He was okay. Don't let these slackers turn you away. He is a good solid prof in his field. His tests are very simple, but not easy. They can be done quickly, but only by students who KNOW THOROUGHLY the material. A+
Do the homework ask questions and see him in his office to ask questions. It is amazing that his tests are so simply solved yet seem so difficult at the time.
When u ask questions, he makes you feel stupid for not knowing the answer from the start. Never finishes problems. Teaches based on philosophy, not a problem-based professor. Told us we were getting a Harvard Education from him. Yea Right!!
He is extremely nice, and willing to help, but makes you feel uncomfortable about asking questions. When anyone would ask a question, he'd put us down, saying his 10 yr. old daughter can do the problem. Very inappropriate.
still cant speak the english language very well. hard to read the board. says he wants you to ask questions but ridicules you for doing so. tests are very hard. the one good thing is that he doesnt collect the massive amounts of homework he assigns.
While he comes to class usually in a good mood to teach, don't be fooled. He considers himself God's gift to teaching, and assumes everything you have learned prior to the class is trivial. His tests are tricky, and are more abstract then the assigned problems from the homework. Bad at English
Mr. Shi is one of the most un-genuine, demeaning and essentially belittling instructors I have ever come across…..I am not exaggerating….I would rather give myself an enema with a rusty spoon than attend his class again….This guy is terrible! AVOID HIM PLEASE.. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID....
He knows what he is doing but he is just very hard. In order to pass his class with an 4.0 make sure you really know your math! Avoid taking him if you can!
Well this guy is hard. he thinks everyone is under educated and he thinks most math is trival...He belives if you know the method you know how to slove all problems so you need to understand the methods. So if you want a better grade or to pass his class take all math at occ.
man, this prof is so hot. he starts bouncin up and down in the middle of class while talking about the red book in China. He's Communist.
Worst professor ever
he is a very demanding profeesor. He wants you to understand the concepts behind cal..His exams are harder than the average instructor but work hard and as long as you are committed you'll be ok. You will learn a great deal from him also. But If you are looking for that 2.0 don't take him....
you know hes really not all that bad of a guy, he's actually pretty nice most of the time, but i have no problem at all admitting hes the worst professor i have ever had...ever. he doesnt have the ability to dumb down what should be and he just cant plain teach that well. F'05 154 students look out.
He knows his material well and is prepare for any questions. The only thing I suggest before taking this class is review past mathematical concepts. There is homework in the class, but he doesn't collected it. He is a good teacher. But make sure that you know the CONCEPTS WELL!!!
unapproachable. Assigns homework and if you don't understand something refuses to answer questions. Gets a thrill out of humiliating students in front of the whole class. Inconsistent grading techniques. If you are a girl you are downgraded from the beginning. I know a lot of differential equations no thanks to him though.
This guy is so predictable!! Just learn the examples from his notes and that is all you need to know. His tests are based off of his examples he gives in class. Everybody is giving him such bad ratings because they don't pay attention in class. If you can't stay awake for two hours of math, then I suggest you don't take him. Excellent teacher.
I would not even refer to Shi as a teacher, as much as a malicious, angry and spiteful individual who will indeed make your life a living hell. He is extremely demeaning and has told me "I am not prepared" a thousand times. I am really surprised Oakland employs a person like this? If you think I'm exaggerating, take him, you'll see.
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN! My only advice is to avoid taking him if you can. He merely lectures examples from the book and frequently goes off topic. His exams are very tough and have a lot of theoretical questions. Frankly, his class was a living nightmare. Anyone who tells you otherwise must be accustomed to bad professors.
Talks sort of funny, does go off topic, but he explained the problems pretty well. Tests were not too hard. Eh.
Watch out if you are female for he can't stand your kind....no joke. It's weird, he'll actually rag the girls pretty hard...it's really unprofessional
Tests are not too hard **WRONG** The 1st test average was a 38%. There are only 5 people in the class and its only Oct.10. Terrible teacher and person. AVOID at all costs, do not make the same mistake I did. Please kill me now.

This guy does not deserve to be on this site because this site is for professors. he is not a professor. he is a guy who will ruin your life. literally. i was considering going into engineering, but he changed my entire vision of my future, and not because i can't do math(I CAN) but because of this class; i dont want to approach math ever again!!
Shi is literally alful. He's a stain on the already blemished math department within oakland. I'm not kidding. This guy is bad. Dont belive anyone that says he's ok, they must be used to terrible teachers
No Comments
wow, this guy is bad. There is no other way to say it. He's just plain bad at teaching. Good luck winter calc 1 kids, you're in for it if you take him :(
WOW. Too bad this class blew. Tests are about 10 questions and impossible because everything must be written out like a paragraph. I got a 27 % the first test. By the way I went to all the classes, did all the homework and have always done well in math. Take a different professor.
BAD BAD BAD
can you say "FAIL"?, if you can, you probably will. NOT KIDDING stay away from this one, he's an odd-ball
Why? How did this guy get a teaching job is beyond me. He would be fired in the REAL world from any job. No people skills, condescending, and thinks he's better than you. Avoid if possible. the semester is almost over.....and i just keep asking myself WHY?
Good professor, makes you think about what concepts really mean, rather than just crunching numbers all day. I would take him again.
Who is the last person that wrote that comment. Are you crazy? Maybe your used to poor teachers. Or maybe is was shi himself. Listen, do not listen to anyone that says shi is a "good" teacher. HE'S TERRIBLE, this is why oaklands math program is so bad
Horrible, absolutely horrible, bad, just the worst teacher you could ever possibly encounter...avoid at all costs!
I would rather have my ass kicked every morning when I get up than attempt to understand what he is talking about. SO THEORETICAL. Is this calc 1, I took calc 1 in highschool and this is not it?
Oh my god! I have never had a worse teacher in my life. I could probably not show up for his class and do just as freaking well. He doesnt TEACH anything. He just sits there talking about theory but when I try to do the work I havent even seen one example. I try to read th book and it makes no sense. Never take him, EVER!!
This guy sucks. Shi is a very smart guy, but he is a terrible professor. It's not that he's hard to understand. He just sucks at teaching. His exams are impossible. You will end up either dropping or failing his class. Got a 3.6 in Precalc with Wright, and ended up failing this guy's Calc class. He's ridiculous. Avoid at all costs.
Guys, I liked the Shi's class. I agree that he is smart. He gives lots of theory. But it helps.I would encourage people to take his class. He helps a lot.He will do everything for you to pass his class.
This last comment was not from a student. I had Shi twice, and he is absolutley terrible. Lecture is all theory, where is makes fun of his students and compares them to his 8 year old daughter. Tests are literaly impossible. If you think I'm kidding, take his class, you'll see.
HORRIBLE---NEVER TAKE HIM.....Read the other reviews they are all true--he should not be teaching and as far as im concerned OU owes me $.
He really seems to enjoy humiliating the students, it seems as though in order for him to feel secure in himself he belittles us. He always makes it very clear that he wants you to ask questions then when you do he mocks the question and makes you feel like an idiot for asking it. I never thought that a teacher like this existed. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Shi is a smart guy - no doubt. But in order to get anything higher than a "D" in his class you have to put in the time and effort to actually understand the material rather than just cramming for tests. All his test have SIMPLE 2 minute answers that you will clearly see if you have done your work. Very hard professor, but you will learn from him
The worst professor I have ever dealt with. I will never take a class with him again.
Very hard prof - but very funny when he gets to talking about ecomnics/politics/China. Test are based off of *OBSCURE* in-class examples. Do not try cramming - you will get a "D". Try to actually spend 3-4 hours/week understanding in-class examples and you will at least get a B. Decent guy to know - he likes to smoke with his smoking students.
BOOOO!! Once Again; TERRIBLE Math teacher at OU. Very Insulting, makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Gives problems on the test that are no where to be found in the book or anywhere else for that matter. Though he did let us use our BOOK for the 2nd exam! (Don't expect this though, he's very inconsistent) AVOID like the Avian Flu (hehe)
This man is the reason I am no longer a math major. I went to his office hours and even improved my test grades from a 30 to a 90. He said that if I improved, he would drop my first test. When I got my grade back, he did not drop that test. His reasoning was that I did not get 100% on the final exam so I did not improve enough. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He did not have a teaching skills or better communication skills that himself aware of. He is very knowldgible on math and also arrogant. Don't be afraid asking the questions although may you feel he is humiliating you. Since he came from different value system, he pushes students hard. If you show your effort, he will help you.
He's a really really smart guy, but he kinda makes the class impossible--at least for high schoolers. i mean its not even possible to do the homework in one day when you have school that day. So ya, if you REALLY REALLY wanna get degraded and feel useless TAKE Him. Or just be smart and not take him.
smart but tough
he is horrible. he doesnot understand questions and is extremly challenging to understand. He just kind of points and mumbles at the board. I would avoid him at all costs
He is a very tough, but smart professor. It was really hard to pass his class, however, if you put time and work hard it is possible. He seems always too busy, nevertheless, if you ask him for help he will be more than happy to do so.
Not easy, but an excellent teacher.
Terrible teacher, lectured us more on history than Math. Was more concerned about us understanding how communism was better than teaching us math.
Worst Teacher ive ever had. Hes constantly late for class. No question that he is very smart but he does not know how to teach. Examples and Sample tests are horrible, and hard to comprehend the steps used to solve them. He does not come to his office hours, and does not respond to his students emails. Avoid at all costs.
I worked hard and studied all the time. This professor is smart but not a good instrcutor. Take all math classes elsewhere because math at OU is realy bad!
Avoid this man like the plague! He's smart, but he really wants you to know the theories in case you're going into calc 2 or more. Plus, he grades hard and teaches bad. I learned more about his passion for econ and what he thinks is wrong with the president than math. He literally goes of in tangents about it. Do NOT take him if you wanna pass.
Do not take him. I am surprised they let him teach still. We got our test back and out of 60 people only 10 received 60% or higher. I studied and did all homework and still got a horrible grade.
Worst teacher I have ever had. I went to every class, took notes and read the book and still managed to fail every test. Our class average was a 20% on our first exam and he blamed it on the students. He loves communism so he talks about it constantly and teaches you stuff you don't actually need for the class.
Horrible teacher. Do not take him for any math class. Spent more time talking about communism and economics then math. He is very difficult to understand and his hand writing is far from legible. Class consisted of two exams and a final, no chance for extra points.
Be prepared to show up for 8AM class and have him talk about politics for 20 minutes. Falls behind schedule very often. Since he was raised in China, he expects his students to perform the same as a Chinese student. Very anal about solutions and proper explanations. Thick accent, sometimes condescending. Avoid if you want to not hate math even more
Everything is True. Syllabus chapters do not coincide with text. His "theoretical" problems can not be found anywhere. They are questions that math theorists ponder, not college students! I took some of the Problems to Spagnuolo and she had NO idea what he was asking us to do. Condescending to Americans. Oakland, its about time you deport his A$$.
Relax. His philosophy has meaning..and its true. If you can understand or even come close to understanding the theory behind it, than knowing how to do it in actual problems(not arbitray ones)will be easy. Exams are HARD, but he is willing to work with you if you show some sort of thought process. I missed the exam1 for hockey and he worked with me
I would probably rank Professor Shi on the lower end of teaching ability, he is unclear, extremely boring, and very confusing. he can appear a bit condescending as well. (typical from math at OU.) if you need the class, dont fear to take it. if you get 60% on the final, you pass the class regardless of previous grades. just learn from the book
I am a mostly all A student but i couldnt pass his class. Most of the questions on his example are theoretical and do not require any calculations and the ones that no require calculations are way more advanced that what we learned and take an hour just to do. He doesnt curve and he could care less if you pass or fail , he proudly admits it.
Stay away! Hard to understand. Talks about the concepts of math and not the actual material. You can listen to an entire lecture and still not know how to do the assignment problems in the slightest! This guy should not be teaching.
Extremely interesting class to take. Professor Shi is by far one of the smartest people that I've met with regard to mathematic principles. Do not take the class if you are not able to put in time, read the book, and thoroughly understand mathematical concepts.
Mr. Shi is not clear on the topics in the book that you may need for future math classes. He cares more about theories and government than the math needed for the class. I would advise taking this course with a different instructor becuase it really is a lost cause with this guy.
I really like him as a person and think he is interesting and even funny, however i'm here to learn and everything I have learned has been on my own. That wouldnt be a problem except the tests are based on his lecture rather than the book -_-
One of the absolute worst professors ever. He does not explain the material very well. His tests are very hard. He's not very good with speaking english or using a computer. When you ask him if you can do an example, he says that you should already understand how to do it and dismisses you without giving any help. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I wouldn't recommend Professor Shi. He is terrible at explaining and his tests are based off of his lectures rather than the book. He expects you to understand calculus at an analytical stance. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS I haven't learned anything valuable.
Worst teacher I have ever had, and I normally find it annoying when people complain about teachers. He made fun of his students, I got in a argument with him just trying to withdraw from his class. He is very smart, but tries to teach you like china teaches math. Literally will not answer questions. Never take him, ever
He is brilliant, but an awful teacher. He says he doesn't care if you can do the problems or not as long as you understand the concepts. Too bad you're graded on the problems. Does a poor job explaining how you reach a solution and doesn't do enough examples. I stopped going to class because I could learn better from my book.
Has online tests and quizes. they're hard, even with google/wolfram alpha. Really bad at explaining things. Rushes over material very quickly. Has an accent, but you easily get used to it. Is very intimidating. Constantly made mistakes on moodle quizes/tests.Would almost ridicule students for incorrectly answering vague questions with vague answers
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. I even went to office hours for help and he dismissed me, saying he had no time to help me. Laughs at you if you don't understand and talks about how terrible american teenagers are. Made me hate math. Does not curve and will not help. Bad accent and is not clear. STAY AWAY.
This class is insanely difficult and with Prof. Shi, it's about a hundred times harder. Online quizzes/exams are difficult and timed but working together is allowed. Get a study group together and you'll pass -- it's impossible to get an A in the class. Don't even try.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER... Very hard to understand, goes off on random tangents about subjects not related to class at all, has many errors on tests, teaches some material that does not appear on test, and does not teach material that DOES appear on test. I do not... DO NOT reccomend this professor to anyone.
He OCCASIONALLY says something noteworthy in lectures that is useful on a test, but mainly teaches from the book. He also makes things seem hard. Study on ur own!! Problems on his tests are related to homework by TOPIC. They are not "recreations." You need to SUPER-WELL understand how to do the methods you learn and apply them in NOVEL ways.
Expects you to learn how he teaches. He's not a bad person but he is a bad math teacher. Online quizzes sound good but trust me they're not. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take him. You'll thank me later.
Professor Shi is definitely a difficult instructor. He is set in his own ways, and students are taught based on this rather than the book's methods. However, he knows the subject more than any instructor I've known. He is able to solve any problem, and can explain the steps, but you have to ask specific questions to prompt explanation.
He is the worst professor i have ever had. He refused to help or answer questions.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. As a 4.0 student who got 20% on his first quiz, I can't stress this enough. Don't put yourself through it. I love math, but he was confusing, not helpful, and went off on distraction tangents. I dropped the class, but hear other people are still having trouble.
Good prof
Never take with him. Unclear and rude. Expects his students to know the material, rushes over it and makes a lot of errors. Skips a lot of things assuming that the students in his class knows what he is talking about. Never responds to emails and once posted the wrong sample final exam for our class and didnt tell us until we realized that later.
I have no doubt that he knows his stuff. He just can't teach it. Half the time, he got his own problems wrong. He is very unclear on his processes; basically he wants you to read his mind. He also speaks low and he is natively Chinese, so his accent is a little thick. He's about "his way or the highway", even if you got the right answer.
Prof. Shi did an excellent job making sure his students understood the material. If you pass you understand Calculus and he makes sure that is the case.
He is willing to help as long as you say something. He has an excellent teaching style by teaching theory and making sure you understand. He's really an inspirational man and makes you want to learn Calculus. His analogies are useful pay attention.
Calc at Oakland is tough no matter what prof you take. However, Prof. Shi makes sure that you clearly understand the background behind the math before applying it. He wants to make sure that you actually get it before moving on. He may come off the wrong way, but he will tell you multiple times that he wants you to succeed and do well. Great guy.
As a high school student who dual enrolled for Calculus, I must say I was caught off guard by how truly awful his class was. He is absolutely unapproachable during office hours and unwilling to answer questions or clarify anything covered in previous classes. If you are unfortunate enough to get into Prof. Shi's class, drop out before the deadline
Peter Shi is a very smart man, but he just can't teach it. Half the time, he got his own problems wrong. He is very unclear on his processes. He Expects everybody to remember everything they have learned in the past. His accent is a little thick. He's about "his way or the highway", even if you got the right answer.
Don't go into this class expecting an easy time. His lectures, while stocked with information, will not fully prepare you for exams. STUDY ON YOUR OWN! I cannot stress this enough, you will need it.
Shi is a very smart man, but a horrible teacher. Your grade is based entirely on four exams which are full of trick questions. He will do these problems after grading the tests, and often gets the answers wrong. He rambles and goes off topic most of the class, and he likes to talk more about politics than math. He's a tough grader, and not helpful.
Very unclear lectures - makes many mistakes himself. Doesn't fully complete examples because he expects you to know how to do it already. Could get the right answer but if it's not done his way it's wrong. The average for the first exam was a 45% so if that tells you anything.... don't take him. I almost failed calc 1 with him as well.
Was a tough grader. The homework was not mandatory. Except the Homework that took place instead of a final project because he didn't think the class was smart enough to accomplish the final project.
Professor Shi lectures using only theorem and will not use real number examples even when asked. His exams are very difficult and is also fairly rude to students when they do understand.. The only reason I might pass is that the exams are online. Have never even come close to failing a math class in my life before this. Just don't take him.
Peter Shi is a funny guy, but is likely not what you are looking for in a proffesor. He has a very distinct teaching style; he teaches theory and does very few examples. I disagree with other ratings, he is not rude and condescending. He wants you to know the material, the problem is he doesnt explain things very well.
100% the worst professor I have ever taken. Good luck trying to learn anything from his lectures because he cannot teach. Almost all of his problems are abstract-based which would not be a bad thing if, again, he knew how to teach. Grading is extremely inconsistent. Gets off track in his own lectures. Do NOT take him.
Hands down the worst professor I have had in my 4 years at OU. He is brilliant, but a terrible teacher. The average on our first exam was a 30%. I never got more than a 30% and I ended up with a 2.3 simply because he had to curve us a full grade-point so kids would pass. If you have him DROP him. I have a 3.2 GPA in ME. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
Absolutely horrible. Linear Algebra exams were online so it gives you a slim hope of trying to get a good grade. The average of our 2 exams was a 60% and Shi thought that was good. Final is cumulative and is impossible. Teaching style is horrible and he just derives things. No concrete examples or real world examples. Don't ever take this professor
Professor Shi is a legend. The class was very theoretical. The tests were online and you had plenty of time to consider how to approach a solution. With hard work, you can succeed in the class and leave feeling like you learned. It helps that this man is very funny.
Really funny guy but not the best professor. Lectures proofs and tests on applications of proofs. I studied how to solve problems and that did not help. Would not recommend taking him.
His personality is awesome! Although he isnt a very good professor. Theres very few homework grades and well his lecture is very theory and proof based, and he also very much teaches you the "my way or you can use the book but it's not elegant enough like mine". Anyone who loves math and how it's done, take Prof Shi!
Don't take Professor Shi. He assigns homework but never collects it so you don't get a homework to help you out. Exams are very difficult. Our highest exam average was a 55% and lowest was in the 30's. This is because he is very strict with his partial credit. I very easily got an A in Calc 1 and now I have to retake Calc 2. Don't take him.
Professor Shi enthusiastic and fundamental heavy teaching approach is really well suited for calc. If you understand his motive behind his lectures you will do well. He wants students to learn the fundamentals, understand preciseness behind math and want students to think, ask questions and participate. You will enjoy it if take it seriously.
Prof Shi expects students to learn from fundamentals. If you participate in the class ask questions that are more based on theory he will love you. He is very enthusiastic and wants students to do well. Take this class seriously and you will not regret. Its a great learning experience. Make sure to work on homework as soon as possible
Do not take his class. Heavy accent which makes him hard to understand, rude and makes you feel unintelligent when you ask questions. 50% of the class dropped the first week.
This is a tough one. His approach to calculus, and mathematics in general, may come off as tedious, or exotic. However, it is designed for your success, and to grant the student a more comprehensive perspective of calculus and its applications. If you don't want to spend undue time proving things, leave it. If you're patient, it's worth your time.
Professor Shi is a great professor. It took me majority of the course to realize this, but he teaches in a way that is different then what we are used to. If you learn to appreciate his teaching style, you can learn a lot. Be sure to start homework as soon as possible! Do not postpone this. If you pay attention and participate you will pass.
AVOID A CLASS WITH HIM AT ALL COSTS. Told the class he was gonna make it harder since were online (due to the pandemic) which makes no sense. Calls on students then bullies them when they dont understand. Also goes off on tangents about politics.
Before starting my class with Shi, I saw the comments here saying he's horrible and I saw the comments saying you just have to work hard. I thought I could handle it and I was wrong. Shi makes simple concepts impossible to understand. If you take the class you will have to teach yourself calculus. Get out of the class if you can.
Professor Shi is actually a really good professor. He teaches in a different way. The homework is hard and tedious. He does however, genuinely want every student to do well. He worked with our class throughly to make sure everyone understood and got good test grades. Hes a kind soul and should get credit for his approach.
He was extremely rude to students who asked questions. Exclusively teaches theory with very little practical examples. I honestly have a hard time imagining a worse experience.
Professor Shi was probably on of the worst professors I've taken in my three years in college. He routinely botched examples in lecture and barely acknowlegded his errors when someone called him out on it. Questions in class were often met with hostility and were barely answered. Only graded on two midterms and a final.
Peter Shi is the worst professor I have ever had. He is a racist mean man. He made fun of women, Canadians, and shamed a kid in my class by calling him "a disgrace to his country" in front of the whole class. He was unclear in explanations and could not answer questions from classes. He made so many mistakes and would not fix them.
Professor Shi has proven in his first lecture that he is rude towards his students and incapable of teaching the material. He assigned a chapter's worth of material and refused to cover any of it even when asked. When asked a question, he takes a condescending tone, acting as though the student is an idiot for asking. Lectures are incomprehensible.
Unaware of student reception of concepts. Unable to explain at a level below his own so his teaching skills are lack luster at best. Asks questions on topics not yet covered and then blames students for not being able to understand. Altogether, shows the standard level Oakland is settling on.
I had Peter for about 7 weeks for the course over the summer. His grading scale was solely based on homework and exams. He was horrible at teaching and had a very different teaching style and would always pick on me. I would email him and he wouldn't respond. It's unfortunate he's a ten year because the head of the department won't do anything.
This was one of the hardest classes I have taken so far, but it makes sense it the last math class you are required to take, but its not the teachers fault, its mostly because they combine Linear Algebra and Differential equations in 1 class, other schools just offer them separately. Attend every lecture and participate in class.
Lowkey he's not that bad, I took him over the summer and he did explain the concepts well. The only issue I had is that his way of setting up exams was confusing because all the students had to retake the first exam because he didn't explain the questions clearly enough. But he does go on a tangent on his past, so watch that out.
He seems like a nice person, but the lectures, the homework, the tests, the teaching is all very awful.
Shi isn't as bad as people say but ONLY if you had previous calculus knowledge. He makes simple things way too complex for the first half of the sem, but he gets better as it progresses. He goes on random tangents some being if we know how to read english correctly, taught us the Chinese language, he also gets really political at times.
Professor Shi clearly has an understanding of the material but strays from the way the book does it and asks you to rely on his was which does not help when doing hw (not graded). 3 Exams total, 2 in semester and a final. Does review before exams but changes problems slightly. Curves every test because he has no choice.
Peter Shi is nice but only teaches theory which he explains is the only real way to understand mathematics. I don't learn well from examples with letters and no real worked math it made his class very difficult. As long as you do the work you'll pass but he is a stingy grader that gives biased partial credit.
The guy's smart but just a very bad teacher. class is somewhat doable if you put in the work. I took him for diff eq and tbh, he teaches more concept and barely any problem solving. He will turn such simple concepts and make them look way harder than what they acc are. Class avg for the first exam was a 53. Just learn this stuff on your own.
P. Shi is a smart individual but his teaching skills are poor when it comes to theoretical DE, his grading can be harsh on exams if you made a small error on a problem. Offered 15 point extra credit for the first exam due to a very low average on it. Sample exams are different than the actual exams, I wouldn't rely on them too much. Don't recommend
