Mr. Svensson is the best teacher! And his zoology class rocks! He teaches the material in a fascinating way and really gets students interested in everything. I learned way more than I expected to and had a lot of fun besides!
very smart, very helpful, and helps the student develop a clear understanding for the material. always willing to learn new and useful way to educate.
Excellent teacher; fun class; but DO NOT PROCRASTINATE

very helpfull teacher. one of the most interesting classes in westvalley. i feel that the teacher works hard for the class and really cares for his students. great class :)
He is helpful,if you go to him. If you do the studying, you will do good in the class.
great teacher. He is always there for his students.
Mr. Svensson can be unclear with regards to what he wants. It took me a while to figure out just what kind of pondering is expected and graded...but Svensson is the kind of professor who will chage your mindset as you leave his class. Nothing beats that
Thick accent, but generous grader and an easy class. Beware of the BUG PROJECT!
He can be very unclear at times about what he wants. Doesn't really give assistant. He wants you to figure things out on your own which can be impossible at times.
great teacher, quirky and fun. my favorite class of the semister.
Very into himself, tends to forget that students have otherclasses rather than his own. Required obscene amounts of work for this class. Tends to overload himself and students. Never had a class that I've tried so hard in to get a "D"!!
Very hard and never lets you leave early. he also takes attendance every class.
The workload for this class is insane. I spent about 20 hours a week on studying, plus 9 hours in class. He is a very interesting teacher who is good at sharing his passion for the subject, however. You will learn a lot in this class.
Airheaded girls who like to memorize some and then bull**** about it do well in his class. I've been serious and hardly pulled a borderline A. Think twice but the class is very informative and enjoyable.
its not that the class was hars just that he doesn't specify what he expects at all
Easy teacher, easy class. Very strict about attendence to class lectures and labs, but as long as you take notes and do the work you should do fine in the class.
Mr. Svensson is awesome! I had so much fun with him as my teacher. His tests can be a little difficult, but he keeps you so interested that it isn't hard to memorize things. He is very fair and extremely informative!
class was very interesting, and i learned a lot. however, he had this journal thing; he wanted us to "express ourselves". i was ever really clear on what he wanted. he also expected us to write every day about what we thought of marine bio. oh w
the journal sucks but he makes biology interesting
the topic itself is much easier compare to Botany or Cell Bio but he asks for sufficient amount of works. To get an solid A you probably need to study more than 10 hours in a week. Not recomended for those trying to finish lots of units in a semester.
The class is pretty hard if you don't put any effort into it. If the opinion of a stranger counts for anything, then take mine. I loved this class with Svensson.
Its true, Mr.Svensson does assign a ridiculate amount of work- but I have learned more from this class than any other. This class really makes you think and is extremely informative. Plus he's is a really good and fair professor.
GET READY TO WORK YOUR BEHIND OFF
Workload was out of hand, he was very late turning back assignments, oh and the videos were stupid.
You know the kind of clothes you wear. You know the kind of food you eat. Why don't you find out what kind of world you live in? Mr. Svensson has the ability to clearly share his knowledge in a way that is easy for his students to understand. No abstr
this professor was very demading. the workload was unberable. definatley picks favorites. picks on some students.
The class really changed they way I think about animals. It was a lot of hard work, but it was really worth it. Svensson is really passionate about animals and it shows. He also really cares about his students. Thank you!
Great class; motivated instructor. If I knew then what I know now about workload, I might be too intimidated to sign up for this class. However, having completed the class, I feel that I learned a lot about evolution, physiology, and biodiversity.
This instructor challenged me greatly but always answered all of my questions even if my questions were repetitive. He opens your eyes and tries to teach you things that affect your life and he also helps you to get through the course as best as he can.
Whoever gave him bad ratings is just lazy. He doesn't pick on anyone is completely FAIR in his grading. Although there might me "favorites" he doesn't grade them any higher or lower. He is really helpful and answers ALL of your questions nicely.
Get ready for A LOT of work. Lots of reading in additon to his long lectures & labs. He's really smart and knows tons about every animal. STAY AWAKE IN LECTURE!
Engaging and interesting lectures. Cool slide shows during lecture and good examples. Relates material to things that are easy to understand. Go to all the lectures!
Fairly easy class, you basically show up and take good notes during the lectures, study somewhat for the tests (which are really easy) and he offers extra credit. Plus he usually will make some off hand yet humorous comment.
Makes the subject matter more intersting than anyone else ever has. Comical and yet enlightening. Makes you think about the world around you. The class is demanding, but worth it.
The journal is impossibly hard if you fall even the slightest bit behind and very unclear as are some of his projects. he is very enthusiastic about the subject but unless you're ready for the work load, the best you can hope for is a C.
Good class His lectures can be a little confusing sometimes but he'll always help if you have any questions. He also has a really funky sense of humor that makes me laugh really hard (not corny). I had a little bit of a hardtime preparing for the tests but overall the more I studied the better I did
Without question this course is probably the most demanding course at westvalley. If you fall behind it will be tough to catch up. Dont take this class if you are craming in units. This class is really like a 10 unit class, no joke! He is a good teacher but asks for too much work from his students.
This teacher is awesome. He is very funny and he has a great Scandanavian accent. Gives you study guides and is very helpful especially with listserv. I recommend this teacher.
Interesting class, good teacher. Has Scandinavian accent, sense of humor. Notes are on power point, you could video the whole lecture and get everything. Not a lot of homework
He is a great instructor. Extremely helpful and knowledgable. I did not get a very good grade in this class because I was lazy but I would reccomend the class to anyone who is interested and is willing to put the time in.
Peter is a wonderful professor! I have never met a bio teacher with such passion! He loves to teach to students whom care about biology, but is easily discouraged (but tries really hard) in low div bio courses. He's hilarious, & has GREAT power points! He's TOTALLY willing to help, go to office hrs!
An excellent, yet tough instructor. Lecture material is always interesting; labs make good use of available materials. Just be prepared to work your ass off every night.
Mr. S is very clear on what he wants his students to accomplish. There is a LOT of material without breaks but there's extra credit. He doesn't respond to a lot of emails but ask questions in class. Sometimes he lectures too long but his powerpoints are very organized and he has a cool accent.
very very hard teacher. i usually do good in science classes, his tests are crazy hard!!!!! tries to be funny though!
there is alot of work to be done in the class, journals, insect collection, papers, and tests. try not to slack in this class or you will be spending alot of sleepless nights trying to finish something or studying for his test. usually a visual test and a 80 multi choice test and a writen part too.
dont take this class unless u hav the time for it. the journals are the best part of the class though. i think that that what makes it a fun and interesting class. didnt study much for the tests, but they are straight forward if u can elimate the wrong answers. the field trips are boring and its a waste of time. dont go to them. dont slack off.
He is a great professor. He knows what he is teaching. Take his class. Take a good note in the lecture. study the study guide on his web site. he is a really nice professor.
awh nao!! i love this guy. he's great. silly tall man who has interested lectures, for the most part. i strongly suggest taking this in summer!!! waaaaay easier.
This was probably the most intense course I've ever taken (even compared to the university), but also the most rewarding- it made me absolutely fall in love with science. Do not get behind, and be sure to have fun with the journals.
difficult teacher to learn from and understand
A little hard to understand due to heavy accent. He is very knowledgable and interested in the subject. Pay attn and study hard and this class is very rewarding
I LOVED his class! I had a hard time with some of it, but he was always very helpful and enthusiastic. He's not at all hard to learn from. Always write as much as you can in the journals, and then some!

This class really made me look at animals in a different way. Way interesting.
so enthusiastic and loves biology; heavy accent; you had better know your subject matter because his tests are NO joke; great sense of humor, loves to make class laugh; labs = quiz easier; but just as happy and helpful as his lectures
There was a lot of things to learn but he made class fun. I have a whole new outlook on the animal kingdom now because of his class
One of my favorite professors at WV. He really cares about what he's teaching and his students. Great sense of humor. Really makes you think about things, and in a way changes your life. Review notes to do well on exam.
Best class I have ever taken. Period. notice the use of these periods. thats how serious i am about how good this class was. svensson is awesome. but be prepared, theres a lot of work to do.
He looks nice and he seems to be helpful but at the end he is not.Iam graduating from UCLA with GPA 3.7 and the lowest grade in my transcript is still his class. I would go to him before each project to make sure he is happy with it and he would say yes but my grade end it up to be low. I still can not forget him after 3 years, he was really mean.

Great guy, very devoted teacher. Material easy. BUT DON'T PROCRASTINATE! I stayed up till 9 in the morning doing journals. You need to keep up with everything because it is a lot of material. I really lked this class. Don't take if ur not a bio major, you will die! However, I liked the class. Sometimes boring though.
The worse class I have ever had!Don't take it! All his lectures are in power point and you don’t have time to write everything! Lots of material. Just don’t take him.
Interesting! Changed my view of biology, but lots of work. Cool class.
This class is terrible, and he is such a boring teacher, tones of material with a not that helpful professor! very hard to get a good grade from him, he is very bad with grading and he does not teach the material up to what he expects you to know, DONT TAKE HIM!
Wonderful teacher. He is extremely dedicated and willing to help. Changed my view of biology. It is a lot of work, but its worth taking!
the FUNNIEST,nicest, most intelligent,&FAIR teacher i've ever had.Very straightforward,so be careful withwhat u say.He CARES so muchabout his students,&isalways there to helpthem.LOTS OF WORK.changed my view of bio.Givesu enough time to finish the test:MC&essayQs;ifu hate MC like me,ustill hav EQ Defi use the site wikipedia.ABSOLOUTELY LUV THAT SIT
anything but boring.lovedhisessayQuestionsHis mc tests are hard, butthere isSoMany projects thatCanHelp bringUpUr gradeDoesteach u up to the point he expects u2know.i went 2hisoffice so much;everytimeHeHelpedMe the entire time, neverMade meFeellike iWas botheringHim.WTHECK,very fair interms of grading.may have favorites but doesnt show in his grading
Ok, to whoever said this class was boring...WTH? the most interesting class, hard, lots of work, but definately worth it. changed my perception. hard tests, but very fair grader. and the class is anything but terrible...
Animals are interesting. Loved the class.
Fun and informative class sessions, good use of visual aides on presentations, good class discussions.Rewarding field trips.
He is a very nice guy but needs to be a bit more clear with the material, if you fall behind your screwed. moves at a fast pace. be careful
wonderful teacher. he is extremely dedicated to his students. the lectures are very interesting and he knows so much about animals. the field trips are fun esp the one to davenport landing. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE on the journal. do the study guides and you will get an A on his exams.
I've been going to wv for 3 years now, and i have enjoyed every teacher more or less EXCEPT for this one. He insists on field trips on the last minute, even if it's raining. class moves very fast (everything lecture, everything BORING). note this: i struggled, asked for help, and he literally ignored me, didnt even write back.no lie:worst teaher
I learned a lot in this class. Really interesting stuff, but def a majors class. Prof loves biology. Take it!
When he says "ponder", he means memorize HIS ponderings and only then feel free to add yours in spare time. BTW, present only HIS ponderings on the exam. Instead of skipping over the fact, I wish he made it more clear in class(tests strongly emphasize class material). While blunt here, there're ways of saying this nicely. HEVR, very rewarding class
His class is very interesting and I liked it, but his grading is ****. Its hard to get an A real hard. But take him, its really easy to get a B or C. And the class is so interesting.
Took this his class and failed miserabley, took the same class/diff teacher and passed with flying colors. I even asked svenson for help come the end and he didnt respond. Hated this class, least favorite of 3 years at wvc.
The worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He pretend to be nice but he is a real A**. He was not clear with his lectures and his exams were HARD, and he was not considering how hard you are trying in the class he would just give you a low score, overall terrible teacher, never ever take him!I hate the guy!
LOL - Come on you guys. The class average was 84%! That rocks! How can you get a C? I worked hard, put in the hours and got an 'A'. The prof was way helpful. I felt like he really wanted us to understand stuff instead of just memorizing facts.
Come on... this class was a lot of work, but easy. Exams were all on lecture material. If you think the class was hard, there's something wrong with you, not the teacher. But don't take this class if you don't have time.
This class was brutal. There is tons of work--there were so many study guides. The final was the worst (10 study guides). I did not learn a lot from lecture because it was unorganized. He went from one subject to another and it was very confusing. I spent hours on every sg (about 4-6 hours). He grades unfairly and I did not enjoy it one bit.
It is pretty easy getting a B in this class because of all the work he makes you do. You have so many projects and if you do well on those, it will deff. raise your grade even if your test grades are not that hot. He's not that helpful because I emailed him and he did not always respond back. He's funny though and the labs are really easy.
Jeez, it's horrible that people boast about their grades when they get an A, while making others who did not, feel dumb. Anyway I thought this class was the most complicated and time-consuming class I have ever taken in my life. It's not easy, and I got an 'A' in this class. You really need to work hard in this class, so do not slack off!
i took his summer Bio class. he graded on a curve which was good for everyone. not sure if he still grades on a curve since this was summer 06. be ready to take a lot of notes. as long as you sudy those you will pass, i barely picked up my textbook except in lab
I really liked this class as it was interesting and made me think. I was a premed at the time so this was really not my 'area', but I learned a lot. Animals are very cool and complex! Lots of work, but nothing compared to medical school (where I am now). You think this class was hard? Ha ha ha! Wait until you transfer! ROFL! ; -)
You can barely understand this guy. Thank god for ppt slides or I'll be lost. Goes too fast you can barely catch up.
Great teacher. One of those that you can really tell has a passion for the subject and knows what they're talking about. Instead of boring lab write-ups, he has students do a sketchbook which gives people a chance to earn creativity points. Has a good sense of humor and makes an effort to make class fun.
Biology is pretty cool. A lot of stuff to think about and lots of time studying. The prof explained things very well. Funny.
SO HATRD! You should study a lot for Bio 41, and focus on his study guides for the midterm exams. This class is kind of different with any other bio classes/He is not so clear& he goes too fast.U can get A only if you spend more than 15 hours a week studying. Lab is also a huge part of job for this class. Tests are so hard.
Animal Bio is such a hard class, you should spend a lot of time for it, and you should work really hard if u want a good grade. Mr. Svensson goes too fast, &you can barely catch up with him. there is no answers for his study guides, and you should spend a lot of time searching for the answers. tests are so hard. i think he has a passion for biology
The amount of work given for this class is clearly over the top and far too rigorous. The reason being is some sort of disciplinary act of preparation, please... it's just plain annoying and puts a damper on my love for the field, It's not needed to understand the material and the class would be 100 times better without ENDLESS busy work / study
I really liked this class. I enjoyed learning about different kinds of animals. True, I had to study a fair amount, but I kind of expected that in contrast to the whiners below. Not an easy class, but well worth my time.
Ecology Biology: this is a great non-majors course. The level of difficulty is moderate at best, especially when you take into account his liberal use of curving scores. I like the fact that the academics of this class did not distract from the content - lots of eye opening stuff to consider.
Great/SOLID Professor. Very clear lectures. Study guides available for exams. Go to class! & study. You'll enjoy it
Great teacher. I looked forward to going to his lectures every mon/wed. Easy to get a good grade if you pay attention and do a little studying because he curves. Got to love the swedish accent as well. Also, the lectures get more entertaining towards the end of the semester, when you go to more the macro scale as opposed to the micro scale of bio.
Professor Svensson isn't easy by any measure, but he's good. If he hadn't curved the first exam, 2/3rds of the class would have had D's or lower. It isn't an easy A, but it's not at all impossible. He's also very friendly and caring if you engage him outside of instruction. He's not the easiest pick, but he is a good one.
He has a little bit of an accent. nothing paying attention cant see past. He can't tell you enough how important studying is.
No homework. no projects, the exams are all multiple choice and he curves them. If you're good at taking tests, and you halfway pay attention, you'll do fine in the class. I wouldn't say this class is 'easy', but it sets you up for success.
Kind of eccentric. His ego tends to get in the way of any helpfulness that he could have. Class was simple, study guide rarely covered material actually in the tests, copious time and gas consuming field trips, lectures will put you to sleep with long power points. Multiple expensive textbooks required whoch you will never actually have to use.
I learned a lot taking this class, but it was not exactly easy. the prof friendly and seemd to really be into what he was teaching, lots of multiple choise questions. Interesting stuff to learn.
For a semester length online class you would think you were taking a summer session class. A lot of unnecessary reading assigned. I'm a straight A student in 18.5 units and this is the only class that bothers me. It's easy if you do the work but annoys me because of how inconvenient his material is. The quizzes don't cover all the material you read
Svensson is a great professor! He's soo funny. His class is easy if you do the journals and go to lab. I've learned so much in this class - animals, the environment, and western society. I've really become aware of how our consumerism has affected our planet and the organisms we share it with. And he's really cute!
Great teacher, solid. High volume of content, heavy studying required. Impossible to get an A if you procrastinate. It's important to do the labs one at a time after doing them in class, not all before being do. Very reasonable tests, grades are curved. Overall, very knowledgable prof. and very helpful as long as you are willing.
this class depends on the individual. My friend never went to lecture and got an A. However, I needed to go to lecture to understand the material. Doesnt take attendance. No homework besides read/study notes. Gives you a 20 pt EC project..lengthy but worth it if u bombed a test. grades on curve so that can be to your advantage. Four tests.
People that say he gives busy work are wrong. It is all work relevant to the understanding of the animal kingdom. If you are scared of work your in the wrong field. His lectures leave you thinking. Some comments stated that he is not helpful and he is rude to other cultures. I had a lady asking crazy questions every day and he answered every one.
Tons of busy work. 12 page writeup per lab, most weeks you have two of these writeups to do. Thinks he's funny and constantly makes cheesy jokes. You're expected to know a lot from lab dissections, but most of the time is wasted with videos and pointless tangents. >200 questions on the study guides and he doesn't help you narrow it down at all.
Just Lectures and text book reading. Alot of studying if you want to do will on the tests. He's a bit boring because all he does is talk in class but then again, we get to watch movies whitch is cool. I'll never take this class again though.
He made me love zooalogy & care for earth. Not an easy A. I got over 100 through hard work and study. He was very helpful during his office hrs. You can stay longer after the lectures and ask him your questions. The journal, insect collection, aquarium, presentation all very time consuming but were worth every second and effort. I miss his class.
You reap what you sow meaning you get the grade you work for. Very helpful and really cares about the subject and the students! *hint: don't actually do the study guides, just read over them and make sure you know the answers to most of them. And do not procrastinate unless you got a thing for all nighters
Like many other people had commented, yes there is a lot of busy work. In fact, exams are just a little over half the grade of the class. Many bio/premed majors are required to take this class, so take it with a lighter schedule and start all projects right away!
There are not enough words to describe how amazing this class is and what an inspiring instructor prof Svensson is.His seemingly endless supply of knowledge of all things biological is a true resource to the aspiring student. His greatest strength is his ability to instill and promote a love of learning in his students.I will never forget his class.
LOVED THIS CLASS! He's very nice, reasonable, and knowledgeable. Very littlet to no homework. Super easy and fun! As long as you actually show up and listen you're going to get an A. The few essays you have are very simple and interesting. The mid term is a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The whole class is like a big nature field trip!
OH MY GOSH! His class was super difficult and demanding! So many things to do so little time. But let me say, the class is AMAZING! He's so passionate about what he teaches, just an awesome class if you're a bio major or pre/med. If you're not, I wouldn't recommend this class.. it's pretty hard core.
I agree with the poster before me. Great class. Don't take it with a heavy work load, there is a lot to do and you will learn more and do better if you have more time. You will learn the history of earth, the evolution of animals, and the effects our society has on the environment and life within them.
Never in my life have I worked so hard and had so much to do for one class. Peter is a great teacher who is passionate about what he does and has us to a lot to spark up our own passion. Though it was a lot of work and time I've never been more proud of the grade I recieved. Hard work pays off.
Knows his stuff and believes what he teaches
If you're a Bio major or PreMed, you'll be hard pressed to find a better instructor. I finished my undergrad in Biology at UCSC & Prof Svensson remains one of the finest teachers I was privileged enough to study under. Yes, he assigns a lot of work but it is all totally worth it if you plan on having a career related to the Biological sciences.
Never knew what info to follow the lectures were very bad his bullet pionts were pointless
There was quite a bit more information than I expected and I struggled a little bit with the class. The writing project was difficult but was something I've never done and completing it was very rewarding. He offered some extra credit near the end there and studying the book is essential. Overall this was a very enjoyable Bio Class.
AMAZING CLASS! If you love bio, TAKE THE EVO CLASS! If you don't, stay the hell away from it! It was soooo much work but insanely interesting. Def a very difficult class but I was one of the few to pull off an A. Workload: at least 3 hours of video footage, 350 word post and 200 word reply,a chapter in one or both of the textbooks, BE CAREFUL!
BEST TEACHER EVER! He will prepare you and you will leave being a better person for it. You will be ready for the realtime universities. Do not complain that he gives too much work because YOURE IN COLLEGE! Wish I could take more classes with him and soak more knowledge from his classes.
Such an awesome teacher. He is very passionate about animals and the natural world and it shows as he incorporates conservation in his labs and lectures. Yes the insect collection and journals can seem daunting, but it really helps you see the natural world in a different light. Loved the class.
Probably the most intense class I have ever taken at West Valley and I wish I could do it all over again! BEST TEACHER EVER! Wahoo!
Decent online class, have to post in forum once a week and respond to 3 other people. lot of videos every week, reading articles and the textbook, 2 options for extra credit which are just watching videos and taking quizzes. very manageable. 2 quizzes each week timed and no more than 20 qs. no final.
Mr. Svensson is a wonderful teacher! He really cares about his students doing well. His classes were fun and interesting but there is a ton of work in this class! Be prepared to work but its fun learning and you really come out feeling accomplished. If I could take every biology class with him I would!
You must watch tons of videos, articles and text book to do quizzes. But tricky question and hard to get an A :(
He does not have knowledge of his assigned books
Fantastic teacher! Very inspiring and very calm in class. Talks a little fast but all around good.
This is by far my favorite class taken at West Valley. Svensson knows the subject and has an obvious passion for it. The tests are very reasonable, you get study questions ahead of time and there are extra credit opportunities. Highly recommended.
The only professor I've ever had who has had such a great syllubus week speech that I found it inspiring. He is a demanding professor, not just for the sake of it, but because he wants you to really learn, not just cram for a test; and you do if you do the things he tells you to. If you try to cut corners to get an A you miss the point of the class
Prof. Svensson is consistently my favorite professor at West Valley College because he genuinely cares about his students learning. I've had him for Zoology, Env. Bio., and Animal Behaviors. Based on these classes, I changed my major to Wildlife Ecology. He expects a lot from students, but it's worth it! Take his classes!
Professor Svensson is a great professor! He is extremely passionate about the subject and he gives a lot of good information. The class is challenging as it requires diligence and time, but I truly believe that the knowledge gained from the class out ways the work that I had to put in. I walked away from the class with a new perspective.
I highly recommend taking Professor Svensson's online Bio 24 class to satisfy your science GE. I took this course because I *had* to and was not looking forward to it. Yet, not only did I learn a lot, but I loved it! It is the perfect level of being challenging enough so you retain information, yet not so difficult that it's stressful.
Incredible professor, his syllabus talk was one of the most inspiring lectures I've ever heard. If you want an easy A or a class you can pass with minimal effort, go somewhere else. After taking his animal bio class I really believe that you cannot pass his class without the tenacity derived from a genuine passion for the subject at hand.
Hands down, hardest class I've taken so far. But the material is great, his teaching style is perfect, the tests are hard, study guides are long. Simply, it'll be the best class you've taken and your final grade reflects your overall performance accurately.
Animal bio has an insane workload due to the infamous journal (writeillustrate 12 pglab, up to 2 labs a week). But I learned a ton, was very engaged, and got a lot out of this class. Svensson is passionate about his subject and an interesting lecturer. Tests are nitpicky and require a good memory, but lots of extra credit is available.
He's one of my favorite professors. Why? He's interesting, engaging, smart, and not opposed to new ways of looking at things. He is always helpful and ready to listen to what you have to say. I highly recommend you go to his office hours if you need help or are just interested in holding an intellectual conversation. He's a good guy all around.
He responds to emails so quickly, choses interesting videos and articles to share, the class is relevant to things that really matter. This class is excellent and I would take another taught by him in a heartbeat.
Professor Svensson is extremely passionate, helpful, and approachable. Bio 41 will open your eyes to the beauty and diversity of life and nature. There are several assignments that require hard work and many hours; however, the concepts of these projects are relevant to the information you need to study. I HIGHLY recommend this course!!
Peter Svensson is my spirit animal. He changed the way I live my life and made me realize what is important. His class is a lot of work. There is a journal component; its a LOT of writing. I failed the bug catching project but did well on journals and tests and still got an A. Tests are intense. Be sure to take detailed notes and attend lectures.
Holy moly this teach is tough!!! Taking his online Environmental bio class, it's been one week and I'm already swamped with homework. You will have 3-4 videos, chapter readings, 4 forum posts each week, and 2 quizzes (which you don't get to see answers to what you missed. make sure you post at the beginning of the week or you will lose points.
Be prepared for tons of work and an huge, time consuming insect project. My biggest problem with him is he's rude. Don't bother asking for clarification on anything because he'll snap at you if he doesn't consider it a worthy question. He also wastes a ton of lecture time going on tangents that are hardly relevant.
This is the best online course I have ever taken. He responds to emails in a timely manner and he has answered all the questions I have had. He also makes his expectations crystal clear! The class is so easy to follow. It is a lot of reading and videos every week, but it is do able. If you do all the reading/videos you will get an A!
Great class, fantastic lectures, truly a passionate instructor. If you want to learn and be a little challenged, take this class and pay attention!
He is so hard. The hardest class ever. Alot of home work. Very long test. This class is need at least 10 hrs studying per week. He is very hard and strict
Lecture and Test are very different from each other. Tests would cover something he never mentions in the lecture. Need to read and do research on your own to pass. Test is long includes 3 essay questions. Assigns films to watch which are longs and will never show up in your test.
This was a very long class with 6 hours of lab and lecture back to back. Mr. Svensson was also very judgmental and his tests were completely different from the material taught in lecture and lab. There is also a lot of homework that does not seem humanly possible to complete. This class is the reason I dropped out of being a bio major.
Peter is the best Bio professor I have taken at WV. Although this class took over my life as you must dedicate yourself to it 110%, I learned more than I expected. Labs are the easiest part of this class. DO NOT fall behind on journals and study 1-2 weeks in advanced for the exams. Peter is very helpful if you ask and listen to what he has to say.
I loved this class. He cares a lot and it really comes through in his lectures. In class we are either watching a movie or listening to his lecture, but either way, everyday in class there is something extremely interesting to take away. I have left this class actually caring about the stuff I've learned and applying it to daily life.
If you major in Biology, this is the right choice. Otherwise, it might be a hell. Do expect a lot of work. You have to work really hard, dedicate 100% of your time and effort to get a good grade. But in return, you will learn a lot. Svensson's enthusiasm and passion in animal biology and ecology are sometimes contagious. He is also very humorous.
There is a lot of material covered and you definitely need to attend lab and lecture. However, if you put in the work and time, an A is obtainable. Also, I never used the book, he provides everything on Angel. There is A LOT of information!
Svensson's class offers extra credit&essays to compensate for quizzes, which may be difficult. Quizzes are easily done if you watch the films and take notes on important numbers and text that comes on the screen. Turn in things on time and ask the professor for guidance/suggestions. He really makes a difference&opens your eyes to conservation!
I absolutely loved taking this class! I was a little worried since its a science course but Professor Svensson is so passionate about his work. Starting class off with a lecture covering the material and then watching a documentary that goes into more specifics was an awesome way to get through the course. Just take notes &don't procrastinate!!! :)
Awesome class! Professor was really nice and provided many great resources for students to learn from. Assignments and exams were very fair. Keep up with studying every week and you will do well and have a lot of fun. This class has changed the way I view the world and makes me want to go out and do something for the better!
First, education has been fun and interesting. Love learning. He chooses very interesting articles to read that will entice you to continue to further your knowledge. His courses have opened my eyes to the changing world and I am in my 50s! Highly recommend his courses. I am taking his 3rd online
I learned so much taking this class - the coursework was so interesting and inspiring. Svensson makes his expectations clear in the first week. It seems like a lot, but as long as you take diligent notes and set aside enough time each week to complete the coursework, you'll be fine. Plenty of extra credit opportunities as well. Highly recommend it!
Peter Svensson's personal love for zoology and nature make his lectures more engaging. He also has a slightly dark sense of humor that I enjoyed immensely. If you show up to class, keep up with the work, and make sure to use the online resources, the textbook is not really necessary. Put in the time, don't fall behind, and you'll enjoy the class.
He's a great professor, but it is a hard class. If you manage your time properly and pay attention to the very many and often long lectures you're bound to do well. Heavy work load but overall great class, especially for those interested in biology, evolution, and animals. He's a great teacher who will support the students that put in work.
This class helped me grow as a global citizen. It not only made me aware of the many serious threats to the biosphere, but introduced me to inspiring individuals and organizations dedicated to preventing environmental disaster. Weekly quizzes and discussion posts mean you have to keep up with the material. Taking this class will open your eyes.
Excellent class. Very informative and interesting. Instructor is very clear on what is expected of you and due dates. He responds quickly to emails in the event that you do have a question. Average amount of work that you would expect for a college level class. Lots of extra credit. It's easy to do well as long as you do the work.
In my opinion everyone should take this class. The information in this class is critical to our future and the future of generations to come. This class will inspire you, concern you, and make you want to do better in regards to our planet. Fascinating films to watch each week. Excellent teacher, very clear and fair. Lots of extra credit.
Svensson is the best! Taking this class taught me so much about the natural world. Easily one of my favorite classes ever but it needs lots of time & effort. Take good notes, do well on the numerous projects, study & you'll get an A. Class itself is long but low pressure. Tests are long but if you study they're easy. very organized!!!!!
This course wasn't easy and you definitely have to work to get an A, but I really enjoyed the content. The way that the professor structured the class made me learn a lot, which I liked. Getting a good grade is very achievable as long as you stay on track and make sure you complete all assignments on time.
Professor Svensson is AWESOME. I'm so glad that he made this class! Easily one of the best classes I've taken at WV. The class is super interesting and is really worth your time. Show up to class, take notes, and watch the documentaries. You will learn so much about our world! Every human being should take this class! What are you waiting for?
He's a really nice teacher, If you show up to labs you will pass. Lectures don't have required attendance and I was able to skate by with a C
Very simple guidelines established for grading, but can be incredibly frustrating. If you don't make your forum posts by Thursday, your grades start to severely suffer, which is difficult when you work & have other classes with minimal times to complete his weekly 5+ hours of videos & readings by then. It's a good class to take if you have time for it.
Lectures were a mix of movies, short video and reading so suits all types of learner. online class very flexible. Class work has consistent dates and deadlines (not like some classes), so you can plan your week. The content was inspirational and interesting. Extra Credit opportunities early and near end so no need to drop. Lots of movies and readi
I'm so glad I took Prof. Svensson's class. It changed both the way I view my future career in the field of biology as well as the way I view the world. The one thing you should know about Svensson is that he expects effort from you. Mentally prepare yourself to be given a boatload of work every week, but know that you will learn heaps from it.
Difficult professor, tough quiz/midterm (trick questions), outrageous amount of readings & work per week. Syllabus is poorly structure, course poorly planned. Without extra credit half the class will fail, extra credit is a MUST do. This is NOT an easy class, expect to work your butt off for a B. It will be one of the hardest class you ever take.
I love Svensson! While he gave a heavy amount of homework/projects, he was a great teacher. He is passionate about conservation, which I find inspirational. He loves what he does, which is always nice to have in a teacher. He is cute and funny, I think that the only reason someone would not like him is if he/she tried to cut corners to pass.
Not happy with the method of teaching. grade hard. you lose half point if miss spell words. very difficult class. don't take a chance with him.
Really passionate about lessons and is a fantastic teacher if you are looking to get into the biology field. However, for those of us taking this as a science credits and not looking for a science degree, it's a little much. There are at least 3 essays (scientific) and he is a very harsh grader. There's also no room for missed classes/assignments.
Animal biology had a lot of homework outside of class, from completing a lab journal to killing a bunch of insects for insect collections, but this has by far been the most enjoyable biology class I have ever taken. Mr. Svensson's lectures talk about interesting topics that I never considered pursuing until I took this class.
Svensson was by far the best teacher I've had in college so far! Very inspiring and fun to learn from! The insect collections and journal projects did require quite a bit of time (and I will tell you now, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE), but overall the material was fun and I had a blast! Even the dissections were pretty fun! I highly recommend Svensson!
Deeply impactful and informative class. Gained knowledge that will be in use for the rest of my life. Grade for the semester is based off of four non-cumulative, lengthy assessments (graded on a bell curve). Multiple substantive extra credit opportunities. Would absolutely take another course with this committed and widely-knowledgeable professor.
Bio 41 is content heavy so you cant afford to miss lec. However, he provides all the info you need to ace the test in his ppts so I never used the book. He's extremely sweet, helpful, and passionate! Yes there is a lot of hw but its given with reasonable due dates. difficult class but with all the extra credit its easy to pass with at least a B.
I absolutely LOVED taking this class, it seems like a lot of work at first but once you see how interesting and captivating the material he chooses is you can't help but be fascinated. All of the issues were up to date as well as the great textbook, all of the films he assigns are really great too. Truly inspirational teacher, you won't regret it!
He is a nice guy but sometimes his accent is hard to understand. He also puts many things on tests that he only said once quickly in class. you need to take a TON of notes and rewatch all the films he played if you want a good grade
This class is extremely work heavy, so be prepared! Don't procrastinate, you won't regret it. However, you learn so much from this class and it will change your perspective on the animal kingdom. Although he often throws in surprises or very specific details on exams, Prof. Svensson is super passionate about these topics and is there to help you.
Prof. Svensson is by far the most demanding and intense professor I've taken at WVC. Some students may dislike his method of immersing into the Animal Kingdom(do not procrastinate!!). This is the perfect class for passionate, hardworking students. Your grade truly reflects the time and effort put in. I loved his class, and he really is passionate!
Despite many of the reviews, Svensson was one of my favorite professors. As long as you do your work & genuinely try in his class, you will pass. His journal was one of the hardest projects Ive done, but Im also very proud of the end result. This class helped me appreciate the endurance & hard work it takes to succeed.
This class changed my life! I absolutely loved professor Svensson. He is very knowledgeable and really cares about his students. It is a challenging class and you will have to work hard but if you manage your time right, you will find yourself being very proud of what you have accomplished at the end of the semester. I highly reccomend this class
Dr. Peter Svensson is an incredible professor in that he provides very relevant and eye-opening resources to really get your brain thinking about real issues related to our world. He also provides frequent feedback on your writing and strives for you to improve and reflect on the ideas presented each week. Prepare to work hard and be inspired!
A bit weird at first, but he turned out to be one of the best professors I've ever had. You'll have a very time consuming insect collection project as well as an intense journaling project. His exams are also fairly difficult, but he does provide exam study guides. Also get ready to memorize quite a lot of species nomenclature.
Worst teacher Ive ever had extremely monotoned, gets way to distracted goes way off track his exams are ridiculous he tests on about 10chapters at a time and you have to remember every video hes shown since day one
Animal behavior class. Super sweet and passionate. His class consists of lectures and documentaries which we discuss and take notes on. Only has two projects, just don't procrastinate. "Homework" is just occasionally watching documentaries at home, the information in them show up on the exams. Exams are semi-hard. Didn't use the textbook at all.
I thought Peter was slightly a good/decent instructor, but his quizzes are quite difficult that features essay questions with constant word-minimum you have to reach. Weekly discussions are Medium. Overall, take BIO 002 online, only if you're taking less than 12 units because he gives constant films/readings you have to watch, and take notes.
He is literally the best teacher ever! Hes so inspirational and if I was a bio major I would try to get all his classes! really sad that I dont have to take any more science :(
Easily the best online class I've ever taken. While some might consider his workload a bit tough, as long as you make time for it you will do well. His passion for conservation biology really shines through and you will leave with a new understanding on a variety of topics and the material selected is very engaging. I'm very glad I took this class!
Zoology with Professor Svensson is definitely a journey. Yes, you will be hand-writiting about 200 pages of journals, collect 50 bugs, and have various exams/projects, but it's not as much difficult material as a lot of work. In my opinion, through the hard work you will learn the story and evolution of life, and the effects humans have on life.
Professor Svensson is the best! His classes are difficult & there is an intense amount of reading so I set aside extra time to complete his courses. He is very helpful and accessible and spent lots of time answering my questions via email. His classes will definitely prepare you for the world of science & critical thinking! Highly recommended!
If you are taking 6 units or less, take this class. If not, I would highly advise not to. THERE IS A LOT OF WEEKLY WORK/ASSIGNMENTS: Reading 1-3 Chapters from 2 different text books, 3-4 hrs of films, discussions, 2 quizzes on reading and films. Quizzes are super hard and contain essay questions up to 500 words minimum. It's just way too much work!
Incredibly interesting. Professor provided a combination of lectures and videos that provided a comprehensive understanding of the material. Don't take this class if you can't show up every week. All lectures are very valuable to the course. One of the best Professors I've ever had.
I enjoyed the course very much
Peter Svensson is a thoughtful professor whose bio course is very engaging. There is a lot of homework, but the material itself is not too hard. The teacher was very helpful whenever I had questions or technical problems and always gave very thoughtful responses to my posts. I learned so much from this class and am grateful that for what I learned.
Professor Svensson is passionate about environmental biology. I've learned so much in his class and appreciated all of the coursework and subjects. He makes you work for the grade and there is a TON of homework, but he gives students plenty of opportunity with extra credit. Take his class!
I took Bio 10L this summer with Prof Svensson. It was a great class & he did a wonderful job of keeping the information engaging as well as relevant to what is happening in our society today. It is a lot of work since the course is only over 5 weeks but it's not difficult. He gives a clear understanding of what he wants. Easy A with hard work.
He's a great professor, so inspirational and passionate about every topic that gets passed to the students. Lots of work and assignments but lots of extra credit too. Material isn't that difficult, curves all tests, and is flexible.
Would not recommend this class. Not an "easy" online class. Expect 15-20 hours of work every week. Every week: Read 2 chapters + articles, 3-5 hours of movies, a a comment forum of 350 words + 3 comments, 2 quizzes (reading & film), and the final is a 1200 word essay :(. Would suggest you take another class. Will get burnout and sick of all hw.
Was a little nervous for the bug collection project going into this class, but it wasn't too bad. If you've taken Geary's Bio42, this class has a heavier workload (hard to believe I know). Daily quizzes on anatomy and taxonomy, study guides posted online. Curves tests, offers extra credit, and makes class fun. Journal project can be rough.
The class is so difficult. Discussion and respond to 3 other people in the class. Two quizzes for each chapter, T/F, multiple-choice, and short answer. You have to read articles, watch long films/ videos, and take notes from the movies so you can receive good grades. should rent textbook and spend time to read the materials. The final is an essay.
Professor Svensson is a phenomenal teacher. He is also by far the toughest and most work demanding class I have ever taken. Daily Anatomy Quizzes. Around 9 Tests Including Final. Extremely Demanding but It pays off at the end as you will actually remember what he teaches.
I adore Svensson! I highly recommend him. Bio 41 is very work heavy but such a great class and worth the effort. Stay on top of the work load and take advantage of extra credit. STUDY!!! Tons of quizzes, several essays, 12 pages of journal for every lab- draw big anatomy diagrams and get out in the field and write reflections. I loved this class!
I am here to save other Bio students the trouble of going into this class blind. Peter was a great Teacher his class is inspirational and you will learn an immense amount. Listen carefully: THIS IS A WEED OUT CLASS. Many reviews will mislead you. He lets you know in the beginning how difficult it will be, it is true.
Asks thought provoking questions on evolution and animal bio. Posts tons of required external sources on canvas. Exam Qs mostly from external sources. Expects in depth analysis on open ended Qs; sometimes not covered in lecture-lab. Critical grader on exams and projects. Practice good study habits. Expect an onslaught of information in this class
Write down everything. Don't watch the random videos he posts - he will only grade you on in-class movies. Get excited for dissections and it will go better. DO NOT fall behind on your journal - it's a big part of your grade. The bug project is a lot of work but not as bad as everyone says. He likes people who come to his office hours. Curves exams
First off, Professor Svensson is an amazing teacher. Sure, he requires a large amount of work but it is all to help you. The journal is crucial to understanding the topics. His lectures cover exactly what the exam covers. I wish more teachers were like him, very passionate about his studies and carries that passion over to the students, he's great
Professor Svensson's lab was fine. The material tied in with the corresponding Biology 10 class even though I took that course with a different professor. The expectations were clear and related to the activities present in the lab modules. Sometimes long videos and documentaries were assigned, so plan accordingly.
This Professor truly cares about his field, wants his students to pass, showed a genuine interest in all of the student submissions and taught them accordingly. He offered me help whenever I asked for it, and even supplied extra material on subjects I was interested in. I took Animal Behavior with him and loved every minute of it. Great Professor!
Prof Svensson's passion is infectious and truly invigorating! I took biodiversity and extinction with him and he makes you so excited to learn, the resources he provides are relevant and new and continuously updated, he gives thoughtful responses to your grades, he is sooo fast at responding to emails! A real pleasure and makes you love to learn!
Svensson is by far one of the toughest professors I've ever had, and his class is extremely difficult. He's uncompromising, seemingly running the class on autopilot with copy/pasted feedback. At least 6-10 hours of media to watch a week, on top of several chapters of the textbook and a dozen+ articles for two brutal quizzes and a discussion a week.
Took this class over the summer. It was a lot of work, 3 modules per week and each module took me 2-4 hours to complete (with no distractions and being completely focused). The material itself was not hard but there was a lot of it. Just dedicate time to it and you'll be fine.
The class is extremely straight forward and every week is on the same schedules, about twice in the semester there were extra credit assignments that were worth a good amount of points (not you 10 or 15 like most teachers). There are at least two quizzes a week and a forum but everything is straightforward. Do the work-- Get a good grade. :)
I took his asynchronous environmental biology class, and while it was very educational, it was far too much work for a 3 credit class. Dont take it if you have no patience for reading and note-taking while watching documentaries.
Professor Svensson is my favorite prof at west valley! You can clearly tell how much he genuinely cares about what he teaches and the success of his students. His class format is great and he's a fair grader. There's a decent amount of material but it's all so interesting! He's very inspiring and helpful esp if you're a bio/enviro major. Great guy!
Lots of films and lectures weekly. WATCH THE FILMS OR YOU WONT DO GOOD ON EXAMS! Weekly discussion post (fairly simple). Participation in the posts matters! Easy A if you try.
Svensson is a great professor! He's passionate about what he teaches and wants you to do well. The class is a lot of work, but the material is not difficult. It's a lot of memorization, but as long as you put the time in, you'll be fine. Don't fall behind on projects and do the extra credit. Make sure to use the study guides he provides!
LOVE THIS PROF hes amazing. His lectures are extremely boring so be ready and they run almost an hour and a his swedish accent is heavy so turn on subtitles . Hes understanding when it comes to extensions and will pretty much always give you extra time if you email him and give a valid reason. He gave me a generous due date and is great w feedback
Great professor who you will learn a lot from, but be prepared, THIS IS A WEED OUT CLASS. There is a bombardment of material about animals if you take his animal bio class, and his tests are extremely challenging. Make sure to stay on top of everything, ESPECIALLY the journals, :).
I have had multiple classes with Svensson and have really enjoyed them. Principles of Animal biology, a major class, is intense and full of work that ensures you learn your stuff! His lectures are chock-full of information and are delivered in an interesting and fun way. Svensson's passion for science comes through and makes class fun!
The amount of material to get through in a week is more like 6 units than 3 units. 2 quizzes a week with several long essay questions. 2 chapters (20+ pages each), often up to 12 articles, documentaries, and several videos, to cover in a week, including posting on a forum with specific word counts. This class will kill your passion for the subject.
I've taken 3 classes with him and my only regret is that they were all online. Svensson is the #1 reason why I am currently pursuing a degree in animal biology. I cannot recommend him enough to anyone interested in bio, he changed my life. His assignments were a bit tough but so fun! Warning, his passion for animals and bio really rubs off on you!
so refreshing to get a teacher who seems passionate about their job I took a winter async bio class it lasted 4 weeks and was work heavy he gives a bunch of films and articles. put the films on 1.25 speed and take notes than ace every test really easy to contact and grades things practically the same hour you submit and gives helpful feedback 10/10
Hated everything about this class. 3 hr labs but he takes up 2 hrs lecturing and ranting. The journal is a big part of the class, 12 pages for each lab each week, sometimes 2. Exams are very difficult and he puts stuff he doesn't even mention in class. Plays favorites and is very passive aggressive and always sounds irritated if you ask questions.
Amazing teacher. Heavy courseload, lots of long documentaries to watch, many short articles to read but was my favorite class I have ever taken. If you read and watch the material, you will pass. Very understanding, cares a lot about this topic, and it shows. Class is broken down well, lots of material covered in depth. Stay ahead and you will pass
Amazing online course. Not too much reading or writing besides on discussions and some of the quizzes. Very clear with instructions and leaves no questions unanswered. Highly recommend if you don't want a super taxing course, but also want to learn something new and interesting every week. Would definitely take again and highly recommend him.
I absolutely loved this class! - His passion for the material was truly inspiring. - The lectures were wonderful & the chosen documentaries were very impactful. - He was responsive to questions - Gave detailed feedback for each written homework assignment, which was greatly appreciated. I def learned & gained a better appreciation for biology.
Avoid taking animal bio with Svensson. You will have a 12 page lab writeup after each lab(2 labs/week) which ends up being awful. His tests are very long because there's also a visual test which requires students to memorize different phylas, he's also a tough grader. If you can take this class elsewhere avoid taking animal bio with Svensson.
For Prof Svensson, be prepared to read a lot of articles and watch a lot of videos. However, you learn A LOT in his class and it is well worth your while to prepare for quizzes, read the material, and set aside time to work on his class.
This class has inspired me to get back into biology. The class is lecture heavy and prepare to spend the entire class period listening and taking notes. There will be a lot of assigned documentaries and videos to watch outside of class so prepare. But all of this work is worth it if you truly want to learn something new. Very good and inspirational!
Professor Svensson is not only knowledgeable but also friendly. Prepare for a substantial amount of homework and quizzes; the course is challenging. However, the instructor's approach is reassuring, making the difficulty level feel less intimidating.
Animal Behavior with him was a super informative and inspiring class! His lectures and videos posted on canvas for homework are full of interesting facts about cool animals. Weekly discussion due on canvas about the subject of the week, requires some outside research but you learn fun things. And he will give you extra points on these if done well.
Good class to take if you need a science without a lab. But holy crap. The amount of work is insane. 2 book reports, 4 exams, 1 final practical/written project that's worth over 200 points. Every week, between the lecture and all the assigned videos, you're looking at over 10+ hrs of videos alone. Discussion posts (300+ words, plus 3 150+ replies)
He is so passionate about what he teaches. Lectures are really long and part of the lab section usually ends up being part of the lecture as well. Lectures are jam-packed with info, so TAKE GOOD NOTES. The journal portion of this class WILL 100% be your downfall if you dont stay current on it. Overall tho I loved the class and would take him again
Lackluster lectures: mostly him reciting info and he doesn't post modules pre-lecture, so it's hard to take focused notes. Says he's a 'nice guy' but actions speak louder than words. He doesn't care if you have other commitments. Students asked for an extension in PRIVATE, so he ranted in class about 'respecting deadlines.' It came across as petty.
This class was transformative for me, and Prof Peter Svensson is amazing, super kind, and gives very constructive feedback. I am looking to take more of his classes. The course material is heavy but you learn a ton. Grading is very clear, and a lot of extra credit is available.
this class is by far the best class I have ever taken at WV. The classes media and article heavy, but you learn a ton. The Prof. is passionate and very kind. He gives great feedback and the grading criteria is clear, with tons of extra credit. if you follow the grading rubric, you will do great
A greatly transformative and inspiring class!
Great class, lots of reading and documentaries but you learn a lot. Prof is great and very passionate about the environment. Easy grader with lots of extra credit
Really great class and you will learn so much about the environment and how to make a difference. Pay attention to the discussion subjects as a lot of the quizzes are based on these. a lot of extra credit and feedback. Prof PS was really passionate about this subject, readings, media. Alot of the films we watched were inspiratoinal
Very knowledgable professor, you can feel his passion for the natural world. LOTS of lecture but they are all quite interesting so it's not too bad. Also offers a lot of extra credit opportunities!
4 tests on taxonomy & 3 midterms, journal w/ 16 sections (10 pg each), three 900 word MB Aquarium trip essays, 20 forums (350 word + three 150 word replies), & conservation presentation. Exams cover physiology/phylums (use the study guides & memorize numbers from lecture, videos are less important unless shown in class). Good luck, you'll need it.
The class is designed for those who are willing to do the work. Do not procrastinate on the journal, especially if you have other classes as a lot of exams happen around the same time. Study guides, lectures, and anatomy help immensely on exams. Genuine passion radiates from the Professor and he is very knowledgeable about this subject.
Professor Svensson is very pasionate and has a lot of knowledge on animals &the natural world. class is a lot of work& procrastination will screw you over so hard Stay on top of the journal study as you go throught the modules that way by the time the test is coming up you arent scrambling to learn about each phyla &answer the studyguide questions
Be prepared to spend LOTS of time for this class. Journal (16 write-ups, 10 pages per write-up), visual tests, and exams were the main aspects you need to spend time on. Plan to take this class during a sem you're more free in. He DOES NOT post his lectures, so take notes! Most (sometimes all) of lab ends up being lecture.
This class was very hard with two 10 page journals a week, 350+ word discussion with 3 150+ word replies biweekly ,LOTS of memorization of animal taxa, very long tests, essays, and more. Even if you study the provided study guides and all of your notes from lectures, the tests are still confusing and even have material that was not covered.
Unfairly expects ppl to free up schedule for the class. The 6+ hours of lecture a week gets old FAST & he doesn't post it on Canvas. Claims the journal is 20 min a day, but the work he wants to see says otherwise. Material prioritizes memorization rather than understanding, contradicting his intent on having students take away something meaningful.
Other than the brutal work load and exams, my main issue was unclear grading in terms of xtra credit (which you will need). Got differing scores on the discussion posts despite the quality of post remaining constant and comments were just a generic copy-paste for the whole class. Xtra credit for journal, unfortunately, depends on artistic aptitude.
Tons of unnecessary work like thousands of words of writing each week for the summer course. I took lab and lecture. Big mistake. No feedback on grades. Not enough time to complete exams, especially essay questions. I regret taking this class, but I don't have time to retake it, so I can't drop it. Avoid this professor, if you can.
Professor Svesson's environmental biology class was awesome, took an online class for the summer, a lot to absorb in 6 weeks but not an issue if you know how to manage your time which he is very clear about from the beginning. Learned a lot of great information and would take this class again! Finished with great condfidence in my future studies
This class is intimidating because of its fast pace, but professor Svensson helps by making CLEAR weekly reminders and suggestions on when to complete the material by. I loved the touches of humorous answers in the tests! Once you find your groove and understand that this is essentially a full time course, you will find success!
Professor Svensson's ANIMALBIO class is a lot of work, but the lectures are engaging and informative. The textbook is helpful, and using unstuckstudy AI for study prep can really save time.
The professor was not willing to listen to student suggestions on how to learn. He asked our class what are some helpful ways to help you learn, and we provided suggestions, however he did not want to listen. He refused to change his teaching styles. The average on our exams were about a 50-60%. Everyone was failing the class. He does not listen.
honestly don't know how this dude is allowed to teach. Grading criteria is so subjective, wouldn't be surprised if he just grades based on if he likes the student. He asked if there was anything he could do to help us study better after everyone got a bad grade, and when we gave him suggestions he just talked over us. probably a sad person inside.
The class averages on the exams were consistently low. He asked for ways to improve the class, just to say we were wrong. Grading is subjective for the Journal; he said it himself. He gets defensive whenever you speak up or say something he disagrees with. Randomly hands out extra credit without notifying the possibility of it on most assignments.
Very knowledgeable but it translates into long and boring lectures. The journal is highly demanding to receive a high score and the grading is subjective. This course could have been amazing if the exams had less material and/or more tools to be successful.
Mainly discussion posts once a week. But for the exams most of the time he doesn't give you enough time for the written part.
Professor Svensson is an exceptional animal biology professor who brings passion and clarity to every lecture. He has a deep knowledge of the subject, and is also very kind and approachable. He is also very supportive and genuinely wants students to do well in his class. As long as you put in the work, you will definitely succeed in this class!
Peter Svensson is a caring, knowledgeable instructor. His online course materials were well-chosen videos of fascinating animal behavior from all over the planet. The required reading was interesting and we had plenty of time to do the work before assignments were due. Exams were fair and graded quickly and the main project was a very informative.
Mr. Svensson's class required a lot of work, but it was rewarding. The discussion posts made you learn a lot about animals and it was really interesting. The exams were quite hard because of the time limit. The written parts were hard to finish on time. The films will be on the exams so watch all of them. Put in the effort and you can get an A.
I took this class online and although I got an A, the work load is intense, I am talking 15+ hours a week with two tests and a discussion, although there are a lot of extra credit opportunities if your grade slips. The professor is very easy to get ahold of which was very helpful through out the semester.
Awesome Professor, he makes us read of few articles online and watch films and then we write of what we learn base on what was going on and there two quizzes every week which is important to study. As long as you're in task you will survive the semester ;)
Professor Svensson is great! Don't be too intimidated to take Animal Biology, it can be difficult but it's fine if you manage your time well and have a passion for zoology. Professor is very clear about expectations and offers VERY generous extra credit. My tips would be stay on top of the journal project, and pay close attention during lecture.
I loved Svensson, he is super friendly and informative. He does his job well, and almost always knows the answer to any question. A lot of videos, good lectures, and a LOT of studying. This is not a breezy class but I was happy to have a good professor. study guides he gives are helpful. A fun class and if you like bio the studying is bearable.
I was a 4.0 student until this class. He lectures for 90% of the lab period. You must HANDwrite 10-20 pgs per week for a journal assignment. They should hire another professor to teach this so you don't have to take him.
Prof. Svensson's class is reading heavy, however if you simply reach out and tell him what you need, he's extremely accommodating. The criterion for grading is extremely clearly laid out, and it's far from a challenge to get an A in his class. He writes paragraphs worth of comments for each assignment you turn in with crucial feedback to improve.
Professor Svensson is awesome but also the ONLY Animal Biology professor at West Valley. I do not recommend taking another lab at the same time as this as the journal will have you working vigorously. DO. NOT. PROCRASTINATE. Svensson gives informative lectures but will not upload them to canvas so note-taking is a must! Office hours are helpful! :)
This class was VERY homework heavy, but the material was very interesting. Be prepared to watch 2+ hours worth of documentaries/videos every week. It may seem like a lot but I actually really enjoyed the course and everything it covered. Svensson gave very good feedback on my papers and responded to all of my discussion posts. He was also lenient
Very easy to understand instructions. He gives very good and clear feedbacks, as well as recommending a few additional writings and films that might interest you. The class was not very hard, it was very fun. The sources assigned per unit were also very interesting and meaningful. Ten out of ten, great class to have!
This class was engaging, and the content was interesting. The course is not too difficult, and it is important to watch assigned films and lectures. Professor Svensson is clear about how he grades, and leaves detailed feedback.
