this course was tedious and the lectures were boring.
His lectures were painful to listen to, cause he was so boring! Everyone fell asleep! He did post notes on the web, which was good, and the exam was very easy. He jumps all over the place in lecture. Advice: Bring a blanket and coffee for class!
Good instructor, often uses the same overheads to explain very different issues and it is very confusing. Likes to repeat himself over and over....nice guy though, very knowledgeable.
Best prof ever! Funny, witty, intelligent, nice sweaters
love the sweater(s).
Interesting in many respects provided that one takes the time to listen to the Doctor.
Not a bad guy. I remembered alot of stuff due to his overheads and things he spoke about in class. The readings are BORING!
great guy, very inventive in his presentation of material. His lectures are all over the place and it's sometimes hard to keep track of where he's going, but it is always an interesting trip. My only problem is: very soothing voice + turns off the lights a lot for overheads = sleepy.
encyclopedic knowledge. this guy's as well-rounded as they come - well versed in a vast number of disciplines and pursuits outside of academia, including protest stuff, zen, mythology, and films. good way to get to know him? strike up a conversation about cinema, and away you go. indispensible guy.
love the way he can bring up anything, and make it funny while relating it to the topic at hand
He's a funny guy, a little monotaneous during lecture a times. Can tell he's very intellegent and knows A LOT. Hard to keep up and u never know where he's going with the topic. But an easy exam!
Timmerman is definitely a Renaissance man: prof, Buddhist monk, go'vt consultant, etc. Overwhelming intellect matched only by his wit and sympathetic ear. This is the only class I really enjoyed all year...make sure you get PHEDRA as your TA, she's as amazing as the prof.
Great prof. A lot of biblical knowledge!!! I like the way he uses his hands when he is explaining something. I would definetely give him a 4.5/5

This is the only class that i actually learned something useful! The only class that I didn't skip every other lecture! and the only class that I actually enjoyed!
Timmerman is the man. Always has my full attention, I think he is doing great things.
Peter Timmerman is a great prof. I really enjoy his snide comments about how humans are ruining our planet. He's one of the few that don't take themselves to seriously, even though he's really intense :D
lazy, old material, oversimplifications about world religions
taken a couple of his classes.Nice guy but lecture material is exact same class to class. If he's as thoroughly intelligent as everyone says then why does he always give the same readings and same lectures?Great in first year but wouldn't recommend going any farther with him.there is an air of old school prof that students fall for like bad poetry.
good prof
P. Timmerman is a great professor, and a great man of knowledge. You learn a lot about the world and about interconnectedness between the matters.
Good prof, but he tends to go all over the place. In the end it makes some twisted sense but he takes the long way around to get there. Its the nature of the course (1000) to be broad and theory based but this guy goes to extremes. And yet he makes it somewhat entertaining at times. I also recommend him for 1000 but beyond that, probably not.
This class was disorganized, the readings were old, the non-western religious and cultural information did not reflect my own experiences of these things. I did not enjoy this class or professor.
Great introduction course to what Environmental Studies is all about. Only thing is that he tends to be all over the place but it'll all make sense by the end. Easy assignments and exams as well!
I looked forward to his lectures every week. He definitley goes off on tangents but everything is very interesting so it's ok.
I see some nice comments here but this guy has been the absolute worst advisor or professor for that matter that I have ever worked with!
this dude is all over the place..form the history of the clock to judaism you name it hes said it. i have yet to see how all this relates to one another...perhaps someday soon i will.
Best professor of my life. He has a very sarcastic sense of humour and is a very likable character.
The most interesting course of my first year
What is up with these reviews? To some people, it may seem like Dr. Timmerman is rambling all over the place but he IS getting somewhere in a very different way than many other professors. This class is a total breeze, and I wrote all my essays practically the day before it was due and got nearly perfect. Timmerman is a total genius!
Peter Timmerman is an absolutely amazing professor. His lectures were so interesting and fun. Personally i didn't even wanted to take notes, just wanted to lean back and enjoy his lectures, because it was like watching a good documentary. Very approachable. Easy essays, easier exams. An interesting elective nonetheless.
This prof was one of my very worst profs in university, disorganized, hard to follow, gives irrelevant materials, states wacky religios views in class, he was really really bad. thankfully i had a good TA. most lectures you could see half of the class sleeping.
average ratings. it's hit and miss during lectures. course is pretty simple, but you must try to engage in readings or else face difficulty. in general, i would still recommend anyone to take ENVS 1000 to get a broad concept on the enviornment.
Good professor overall. Lectures are good and no textbook is required all articles are on his web page or handed out in class. You can do well if you work hard.
entertaining, very knowledgeable. Kudos to Prof Timmerman for caring more creating an environment that fosters critical thinking!
i absolutely loved this class. timmerman owns.
I love this class. No textbook, it's all online. He is very concerned about you, the student. Also, extremely funny.
He was the most entertaining professor I've ever had! He was well-knowledged and witty with his remarks.
He's awesome! I feel like he has so many interesting stories to share with the world. He makes learning topics that are somewhat boring actually interesting. The class is pretty easy, but interesting. Sometimes its hard to focus cause the lecture is 2 hours and he keeps the room dim.
The most unique proffesor I have ever met! He brings his own real life experiences and ties them with the course. His lectures are also very lively with pictures, demonstrations and good humor. Gives very little notes, which makes for good note-taking practice... but could also be seen as a downer to those who want to skip/ copy notes off o/h.
Uses the same course material over and over. Takes a long time to make his point, and talk about things that I'm not sure have to do with the environment. No textbooks are a plus, but the online readings are super boring.. Nice green sweater though.
CANNOT stand his lectures. I may be the only person to find him so dry. possibly because I took the course before and now again
First and one of the best profs I ever had his lectures are some what hit and miss with some being awesome and other being kinda ok. But those that are awesome are really awesome.
He has a unique way of teaching, like a gradual build up to the climax. Some people may dislike it, some may find it interesting. I'll admit my eyes closed sometimes, but there are lectures he did that still rings through my head. I recommend talking to your TA's to clarify what message he is conveying. But useful course overall.
GREAT first year course. He cracks genuinely FUNNY jokes and sometimes demonstrations to help keep interest during lectures. Well-spoken and witty. NO textbooks, but several online readings. ENVS 1000 covers a LOT of material. Great pre-exam review. But My TA, Mr.Stone, had difficulty engaging the students and seemed like he'd rather be elsewhere.
excellent prof! excellent course! patience is required.
Very nice guy, and approachable. lectures sometimes boring to follow. there is a lot of material that he goes over, but overall great class. He doesn't believe in text books or making exams a trap. Exams very straight forward. ie 10 different terms and you will have to define 5 :) totally recommend this class.
He tries, but it's not enough to keep me awake. You can tell he's passionate, but he tends to get off topic and doesn't engage the class. In the first semester, the majority of the class didn't even know the relation of his lectures to the course topic. Just make sure you have a good TA - I was lucky to have a great one.
He definitely is passionate about environmental studies, and he has a lot of experience in the field but I don't much care for his lectures. I have never fallen asleep in a class until I went to his lectures. That said, the course is easy but it can be troublesome to follow his bias ranting.
EASIEST CLASS EVER!!the exams were seriously a piece of cake, If you know one or two readings really well, you'll definitely ace the exam. Lectures are the worst pART ABOUT THE CLASS. I would recommend this course!
Good Prof. Provides a lot of visuals which is helpful. I'd say the student has the option of either going to class or doing their readings on a basis where they are making very good notes. Either or is good enough, no need to go to class and do readings although it could help you get an amazing grade :)
Peter Timmerman is an awesome proff. He keeps you going with witty remarks and jokes, although some lectured are very bland. However the ones that are good have still stuck with me today. I recommend any first year student to take his class. It really puts a perspective of someone who's been out there starting a movement(Green Party) out there.
Prof is really awesome. Some people find his lectures to be boring, but he's actually pretty funny if you listen to him. Taking notes arent really necessary. Only 2 essays and 2 exams. Pretty easy class -TAKE IT!
Very easy course indeed! His lectures are pretty interesting sometimes but I found it really hard to stay awake half of the time. Exams are easy if you read the readings and overheads. Lectures have a lack of focus sometimes but make sure you have a good TA! Silvia Vasquez was great. Did not learn anything new though from this course.
Great Class! Peter is most definitely passionate about the environment. He is entertaining with his witty jokes and like all classes, after 3 hours it can get a little slow. SUPER easy exams, he gives you multiple options so you have a solid opportunity to succeed. Would definitely recommend this class.
The stories he told at the begining of every lecture were so boring. Cool guy. Total scifi nerd
Miss him. Best prof I've had at York.
ENVS 1000 is very boring. Exams are so stupid and some TAs mark so easy while others dont. Don't choose Ronak as a TA
it was a pleasure to have him as prof.
His lectures are so interesting and captivating! Amazing prof!
Absolute legend. Very intelligent and has lots of experience working in the environment. Very respected. Impressive background.
He's pretty great. Funny lectures.
He is the best prof in the ENVS faculty. I take his classes just to see him. He is the most kind warm hearted person. He had a meeting with us one on one just to get to know us as people. He deserves an award for all of the amazing work he does. He makes you feel both comfortable and confident in your work. I LOVE HIM
Professor Timmerman was one of my favourite professors throughout my University experience. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable, friendly, unique and inspiring. Every class left me wanting to learn more about the topics given, and both his lectures, tutorials and readings were a pleasure to partake in and read.
Peter Timmerman is a very funny and knowledgeable professor. He makes you want to attend class. Exams are very easy as long as you've done the readings and attended lectures.
Timmerman has great charisma and humour, and you can tell that he loves his subject. However, I didn't find his lectures to have much substance, didn't feel like it was a good use of my two hours, and if you do the readings, you'll be able to get by 100%. Almost no point to lectures, which is unfortunate.
Timmermans style of teaching is much more eccentric. He uses a lot of storytelling and art to convey his message. His tests are extremely fair. I got 90 on the final with minimal studying. Just do the readings and go to class and your studying time will be about 4 hours. He adds a lot of jokes but i never found them funny. He is a nice guy.
Grading work is done by the TAs. Hes a good professor but certain readings are very boring.. hes gonna put up anything from the slides he shows and he doesnt upload them.
He's a very interesting guy. Tells lots of jokes throughout lecture and tries to make lectures at least slightly interesting. Many of the readings for the class are written by him. They are well written and highlight key terms important for the exam. Course is not difficult if you put at least some effort into it.
Prof Timmerman is a really nice guy! He was very accommodating when people accidentally missed deadlines or submitted stuff wrong. His lectures can be a little much to handle at times because he covers a lot of content. The course was a little disorganized too. He made his tests/assignments fun and/or easy though! Overall a great guy! :)
Peter was a great lecturer and made the content interesting and fun fused with jokes. You can tell he is knowledgeable in what he talks about and it passionate about them. His lectures can get very long because he will explain a topic in lots of detail. He is a charming professor with a very laid back attitude and the exam was EASY!
THE BEST PROF EVER !!!! I never attended lecture and only attended tutorial, only read a few readings and ended with an A. This exam is soo easy if you put some effort in. Exam was a little hard cant lie
