Not helpful. Self-centered attitude towards society and general public. dont like the way he structured the class at all. Force you to participate so people in the class put up their hands and discuss non-related materials.
Everything is hard. He marks hard too by excusing himself with "department required" and the bell curve. Basically, he talks lot of bull in class that are somehow irrelevant to the course material but manage to argue it is relevant.
felt uncomfortable in class. he always complains about banks, and uses terms like "chinese wall" which probably offends chinese people in class.
he talks none sense. and dont know how to guide students.
Did I take the same course? I guess it goes to show that we are all different. Sure he marks really hard but the comments were useful and he was really helpful. I think it was a good course.
hard prof, hard course and hard hard hard! Absolutely no soft stuff!
banks and banks and banks XD
Will definately intimidate you - thinks much faster than the average person, and expects you to do the same. But certainly a worthwhile prof to be taught from, since he takes you out of your comfort zone and challenges you. Dry course however.
Tingling loves to talk, gives insightful comments, and is very helpful - he is a person whom you need to take time to realize that he is a great professor.... the class is a little competitive though
Dunno how his 300 and 400 level courses are going, but Bus 237 with Tingling is awesome!! He actually makes the course interesting, although we do cover a *lot* of content...speaking of which, I have 400 pages of notes and 200 pages in the text to study for the midterm exam tomorrow...(Certainly not an easy course, but he does make it fun!)
Great professor and person. I guess he may seem a little intimidating at times, but he is a very helpful person and willing to answer any question u want, no matter how inane it might be. If u simply engage in the course, u'll find him to be AMAZING with tons of useful and applicable info to ur future courses/career!
good pro but the lecture is not that useful for u to success in this course, u only need to read through the text book.
I respect him for trying to make lectures interesting. Course is useless for learning about computers because you are not tested on basics, which is difficult for people who only take this course for requirements.Makes course more difficult than it should be. Intimidating.
He likes to talk about himself a lot. He's an arrogant man who likes to put himself up on a pedastal at least for 20 minutes out of the 2 hour lecture. He's an interesting lecturer, however the accolades he gives himself are questionable.
Too much reading, but easy grader
Makes himself very available to students, and makes the course interesting and useful.
He is a terrific speaker. He is probably the only professor who has made me walk out of lectures in awe.
you either love or hate this guy. but either way he is a VERY entertaining speaker.
I really liked him. Great prof. He tells good stories. Grading seems fair.
by far, the most energetic professor i have encountered. he can get pretty cocky at times, but obvously, you go to lectures, which are quite fun. i can't say i enjoyed the material, cuz its so damn boring, but his lectures are interesting enough!
He said at one point "Don't pick your profs just because of their rating on ratemyprofessors.com" I don't see why not thats how I picked him and he was the best prof I have had yet. He made what would have been a boring class with anyone else an very interesting class with him.

Probably one of the best speakers in the department. The material was boring as hell...With that said, he still manages to keep you awake during lecture. High interest level in the course and pretty available for extra help. Don't take his classes if you're looking for a GPA boost. However, you're probably going to learn something!
good prof. made sure we all learnt something from the class. good speaker.
He is great and makes the lecture interesting, the material isn't fun too much to cover but I really enjoyed th class
Awesome prof. The semester was great with him. I recommend him for any class having to do with M.I.S. and decision-making.
he is a very good teacher, kept everything interesting eventho MIS can get boring, test are fair but you need to study, webct helps, overall a great teacher
Definitely one of the best instructors in SFU. I would not be able to imagine another professor teaching this course without it being boring. >>What's your competitive advantage? If you do the same thing all the other students are doing (read textbook, attend lectures, do OL quizzes) then you're going to get the mark everyone else is going to get.<
He is a good prof, just that MIS the course itself really makes me sick. Some said he talked too fast, I think he talks clearly and talking fast and accurate is something we should be admired of. He uses real-life examples to explain stuff, and I would have hated MIS even more if not because of him!
Good speaker, dull material. BEWARE the front row, chances are good that you will be picked on to answer questions.
Peter's a very good professor. He can come across as somewhat pompous at times, but he definitely makes a dry class interesting. I found it quite tough though, and ended up with a C+. Be prepared for a lot of reading.
Excellent prof. He makes the classes very interesting. It is important to read the textbook though. Would definitely take another class with him in the future.
boring class! the subject is dumb and i took nothing away from learning the material. prof comes off as conceited even though he doesn't think so. intersting story telling, but i walked away with no useful information. horrible prof, and stupid tutorial requirement. useless class and retarded MT intended to make him feel he's smarter than students.
The course material is very easy, although some questions on the exams are tricky. Tingling makes an effort to keep the lectures interesting through his story-telling. You'll need to read the text to do well, but who cares? The chapters are really short anyways.
Easy class but he makes it really boring. Tutorials have nothing to do with the lectures, exams are tricky. He is sort of conceded and full of himself. Definitely NOT the best prof at SFU. He's just OK.
He has an extreme fear of spiders. If you want to pressure him into reviewing your grade, just threaten to bring a big tarantula to his office hours.
Interesting lectures but hard assignments and exams. Prof can also be arrogant
lectures can be interesting but are often filled with Prof's personal stories that aren't super helpful. The assignments have unrealistic expectation and tutorials are unrelated to course material and unterly boring! Exams are tricky! Prof can also be arrogant and intimating at times. He's definately nicer if you engage in the lectures.
Overall course is easy, but the prof is very arrogant. In class arrogance is good, helps people become active at learning. However, outside of class arrogance is extremely disrespectful to students. Do not expect a proper answer when you ask questions. The class assignments and tutorials are really helpful in business, but not for the class.
i think he is not good. no any related materials for exams. that means, i don't even know what will be on the exam. what topics are important, or what are less important.
The Final was definitely hard, but if you studied hard, you can get about 60%+ of the questions. As for in class stories, it was more about engaging us with how the concepts can be applied to life. He's a good speaker and makes the class interesting. Overall, fairly hard class, as I think it's to distinguish the great students from the good.
Well, the average of final exam is 62..no one gets higher than 89 out of 100
Well, i have to say that I will NEVER EVER take his class. Hard exams, projects suck, even his TAs don't like him though. Always tell stories in the classes, nearly no use to the material, and the material is boring. He is a little bit discriminate about those students who are not in Business Faculty.
There was an extremely hard final that was almost unrelated to the textbook and his materials. I'm pretty sure i dropped a letter grade due to the final. If you gotta take bus237, take another prof.
although i got an A for this course, but i highly recommend u not to take with him!!!!his lectures are useless for the mt and final, so you may skip almost lecs that would not affect your final grade
Tingling cares about his students and wants them to succeed once they're out of school. He has had an extensive career in the bank industry as well as the consulting industry and will train you for the real world. Always available and very helpful I recommend Tingling. However, if you still need mommy to make your lunch, I would suggest you skip.
The comment he left on my assignment was offensive. His lectures are fairly engaging because he likes to tell stories but they are pointless. I would NOT take a class with him again because I find him to be very rude.
Tingling is a hard marker and you end up reading a lot of material. He tends to come off as rude and blunt but if you go to his office hours and try in his class, the course is really enjoyable. His lectures go by really quickly. Anybody that says he tells useless stories is wrong. The stories teach life lessons and at times they are on the test.
Hard marker, the midterm and the final may seem like they are okay, but when results are out they are dissapointing. Have to do a lot of hbr reading for bus 201, also gotta do a quiz prior to class.
Very interesting lectures, but have little to do with the textbook. Often spends a lot of time offtopic. You'll never be bored, but you also have to keep in mind that most of his lecture will not be on examinations. Exam is based on textbook and harvard business reveiw readings. He is a very hard marker and does not exactly explain what he is looking for in an assignment. I can't complain though, got an A.
Very vague when answering questions. He tries to keep the material interested but his arrogance makes you neglect the class. The TAs are nice and helpful but try to not get him as your prof!
Peter is a man with priciples,to which he strictly stick. He can be rude sometimes, but on the other hand he is a very inspiring instructor. The most valuable thing you will learn in this course is not whats in the book, but how you can better plan your life.Although the stories told are not relevant to the txbook, they do teach a lesson.Hard exams tho
WOW, where to start? Peter is one amazing instructor, easily the best I've had at SFU. Even tho I ended up wit a B his class has taught me so much more then any boring txtbook ever can. He really makes you think about your future and inspires you to do something about it. Sure he's tough but i can honestly say i'm a better student because of him.
I actually loved Tingling as a professor because as most people would say, he's very inspiring and teaches beyond the textbook. However, his lectures and assignments/exams had little to do with eachother. I tried extremely hard in this course and ended up with a B+. Try to get perfect on all assignments because exams are very difficult!
The best Prof I've ever had. He's really funny and keeps you really interested. I felt smarter after all of his lessons and although he claims he tries not to "demotivate" people he really does motivate you. Best class, made me seriously consider majoring in MIS.
maybe its just me, but I can't believe a word that comes out of this guys mouth, he tries to seem sincere, but at the same time comes off as such an ***hole I have a hard time believing he gives a damn. like i said could just be me but i can't stand the man and do NOT recommend him
Has an unparalleled ability to relate material to real world examples and experiences, keeping lectures interesting. Challenging exams, but don't hesitate to infuse answers with your own knowledge, perspective, and conclusions - that's what he is looking for. Motivating guy and somewhat inspiring. His teaching extends well beyond the text.
Absolutely terrible.
Possibly one of the best Professors I have had to date. Very inspiring and relates course work to real life. I ended up with a B+ in his course but have learned a ton. I highly recommend this Prof. He managed to turn a course that everyone dreads taking into my favorite class.
Good guy, interested in the subject. Goes on rants a lot. I didnt like the material, forgot everything I learned. But can be good if you really try and study the material. Make sure to get help with the assignments though! so so course
I did bus 201 with him this year and I honestly have to say that it was an amazing experience. His teaching style is just outstanding and I feel that after taking this course, I am able to effectively apply my knowledge in real life. Definitely recommended to all students. Real easy GPA booster too. Just do your readings, np.
Great teacher, very helpful outside of class. Fairly chill course, I got an A- with minimal studying. Taking Bus201 with Ting for first year was definitely the right thing for me. Learned lots of stuff from him. Highly recommended!
Always keeps lectures interesting, but isn't very related to the material learned in class. He'll go on frequent rants and stories that may be applicable to the course, but other than that you're on your own. Textbook use is heavy for all the material on the exams are from textbook and HBR articles, both of which are assigned texts
your textbook is the only thing that will keep you alive throughout this course, he rants a lot, most of the times it is too quick however. visiting him in his office hours BEWARE most intimidating prof experience ever if you say something stupid. its a bus class however, everyone is doing bad but just do better than the average and u get an A
If you're a first year Business student, don't take this class. Don't do it. It's way too general to help you with future business courses and he marks extremely hard.
Peter is an excellent speaker but the lectures are usually quite boring. Just read the textbook and you will be fine but he has inclass assignments sometimes on the HBR articles so make sure to read those. Also, try very hard on the group project because it will pull your mark up if you do well on it.
Peter gives some interesting lectures although sometimes they are irrelevant to the material. He isn't very approachable even though he claims otherwise. Also, he is a very hard marker; especially for the group project. Keep up with all the weekly readings (textbook and HBR) and you should be fine. But be warned, his final exam will not be easy.
He is a very entertaining prof and is cleary interested in teaching. He may be a hard marker but the class is curved so thats irrelevant. I found the final to be easy. Keep up with the readings including the HBR article and you will be fine.
best prof ever.really helpful.keep the respect when you are with him in office hrs tho;however this doesn't mean you can not criticize him, but really know what you are saying, since he is really outspoken and he may get back to you in a way you don't expect it! the course is not hard(except the second assignment) but he makes it hard for you.
Peter comes off as an arrogant, intimidating prof, but he teaches you useful life lessons. Quizzes are easy. He is a tough marker so my advice is to take unique stances backed by solid evidence. The midterm is okay; the final is more difficult. Memorize the definitions in advance and get the general idea of the HBR articles for a good grade.
very intuitive and encouraging prof.exams are a bit challenging.you're very welcome to come to his office and talk about anything.Overall a good professor.
A prof that I really admire and look up to. He may not be the easiest marker, but it's fair. He will teach you things in this intro to business class that you will carry through to your future courses. I really enjoyed the class even though it wasn't a mandatory course for graduation. Really keep those HBR articles in mind and you'll do well!
He made the course immensely hard to enjoy. Too much weekly readings and he'll ask for feedback on what he can do better, but never ends up taking it into consideration. Instead, he'll just get defensive, might as well not both asking for feedback. Overall, too much work for a course that he makes challenging to get a decent mark.
The guest speakers are interesting, but I wouldn't recommend taking this class. You don't actually learn too much if you already have a background knowledge of business. His exams are not hard and his lectures aren't that interesting nor necessary because it is based on the textbook. He marks fairly and comes off as intimidating and harsh.
He is a really good prof. Comes off as intimidating but wants students to succeed. Midterm and exam not too hard read the book and HBR articles and it's not too difficult.
This class seems daunting at first, but once you adapt to University life this course gets pretty easy. Highly recommend taking your own textbook notes, and attending class just for the sake of in-class assignments.
OK, he tried very hard to be funny, but he is cold when you ask him some question!! he is hot in during the lecture, but after lecture, he is super cold! he do not want to answer any question, it seems asking him any question is wasting his time!!!
I had a horrible time in this class. He changed due dates last minute often and he had us convinced it was all for the sake of fairness. All marks are final or fairness would have been violated. His lectures are disparate from his tests resulting in borderline failing averages and he releases no extra study materials.
hard exams, lectures quite boring and he frequently goes off topic. I found the assignments interesting, and it is important to do well on them if you want a good grade. Overall, not a prof I would recommend
1 1/2 years after this course, I know that no other professor could've prepared me for university like he did. He expects a lot, but helps you achieve ambitious goals. There are 2 types of tasks: Important and urgent ones. Getting to know professors is an important one. Take initiative, visit office hours, be driven and you won't be disappointed.
The lectures are really essential for passing. He basically gives you the material you need to know in class. Textbook is like the lecture. He makes you read it before class. It is good to read before because then you have a basic understanding before attending lecture.
Good guy.
He's not bad; we're just dumb.
Peter was the only professor that was informative and engaging in his lectures. I was never bored for a second and I felt like I was actually prepared for university. I can't wait to take bus 237 with him. Would recommend.
Though he might sound tough at first, he really really wants to see his students succeed. His lectures are boring if you only half pay attention to them. Fully immerse yourself into his lecture and you'll find that they stuff he talks about not only helps with exam prep but applies to all aspects of life.
Lectures was completely irrelevant from the textbook since he just talks about life. But the exams were mainly on the textbook. Remember his favorite HBR's and you will be good to go. He's not that helpful or clear on assignments. Even the TA's don't know what he wants sometimes. His class is a lot of self learning & guessing what he wants from you
Your grade is dependent on your group projects. Pass the exams with flying colours but get stuck with a bad group usually results in a ok grade
Love him! If you can get through him, you can get through any prof. Had him for a mandatory first year Bus course, everyone had their opinions. He's up front, it's upto you whether you can handle it or not. A lot of student engagement (as you would expect in a business class). Show up, participate and know your key terms. That's all!
Good guy all around, you can tell that he genuinely likes teaching. Good use of "news", keeps material current. Textbook is mandatory, you could probably get away with a later edition, but you definitely need it for the online quizzes and in-class assignments. Midterm and Final are formatted the same - mc is easy, written is marked hard.
Did not like him as an intro to business course, very intimidating and tough. Encourages discussion but shuts down people. Important lecture, kinda interesting, but not very relevant to the textbook. Exams are very much related to the textbook and they were between fair and hard. If you can, take the course with another prof!!!
Super tough Tests, the rest of the content is very easy including the weekly quizzes. the quizzes are word for word from the book but the tests have very tricky multiple choice. It's definitely one of those "choose the best answer" type.
Not sure he is talking about on the lecture all the time, sound related to the topic but actually not. Rude, Rude, Rude!!! If possible, do not take his courses.
A very intimidating prof. His lectures were fairly interesting, but all you mainly need to pass the course is the textbook. He marks quite difficulty, and you never seem to know his expectations until after you've done poorly on something. In that regards he is not a very clear teacher. Although he is knowledgeable, would not take his courses again
Really good prof. Took 201 a required course and he was great. Intimidating in class but very approachable in his office hours. Fair exams. Really good prof.
Avoid Peter if you can, you will prob fail his class without sufficient readings. The assignments take up a lot of time but worth very little.
really arrogant, lectures are long and off topic. Usually ends up talking about himself, HBR articles are long and pointless
tough graded but good pro
He gives you all the material you need to know in the lecture slides. The exams are 60 multiple choice & 4 short answer questions. The final is cumulative and it is difficult. The assignments are alright - the grading depends on your TA.
I took Bus 201 and Bus 237 with Peter. Lectures were dull at points and not necessary to attend but he does do a good job of relating course material to current events. Exams are straightforward for the most part but he marks written answers himself and is a tough grader.
I really like him as a prof, I think you could do a lot worse than him. He expects a lot from his students, and tests are hard, but those marks can easily be made up for in assignments. He's very concise, will sometimes say a sentence in class not on the slides that will appear on an exam, so skipping class is not an option.
He picks random people in lectures to answer questions, most of them are opinion based, but i'd rather he open up a discussion where people can express their opinions if they choose to. He tries to make the class interesting but I literally have to force myself to attend his lectures. He is not the best prof for 237.
Easy class, read the text book and you'll do great but dont underestimate the final like i did
Really smart guy, really passionate about the material. He does pick students at random to answer his questions, but you get used to that.
Avoid him if you can! This professor is full of himself and often spend the majority of class time talking about irrelevant things. He makes the exam extremely hard which is funny because when in class, everything he talks about sounds simple and he gives very little explanation on the technical parts.
Class is fair, just study and you'll be fine
Avoid him if you can. He makes a business foundation course harder than it should be. He marks all the assignments and exams by himself so look out for low grades. Boring lectures, very intimidating and he doesn't even respect his audience enough to put on a mic. Overall, not a good prof choice for BUS201
Far too full of himself. Tingling is one of those people who is very knowledgeable but has very little personable qualities. His lectures are hard and off Topic. He is rude and unfair. Condescending is a word that springs to mind. If you want to do well, do NOT take the course with him, otherwise be prepared for the most work you have ever done.
Very intelligent and approachable guy, would definitely recommend him. Fair grader and you'll learn a lot.
good prof
What happens when you cover short man syndrome and childhood neglect with a layer of arrogance? You get Peter tingling. Peter's anecdotes, which he spends most of his lectures on, mainly include his wife and his "superiority." He is the part of BBA that everyone wants to avoid. Take his course to learn about the bad people of the business world.
Peter Tingling was rude and dismissive at SFU, only paying attention to those who did case comps, etc. Despite my involvement, I avoided him due to his personality. Even post-graduation, he remained rude. Why choose to be miserable to 20-year-olds?
