Fun class, great sense of humor you will learn a lot
He is really funny if you understand his humor, and you learn a lot. Sharp guy.
He is so cute and funny. His class is interesting, and you still learn a lot.

If you get his humor he is very funny. The class was fun and I learned a lot.

History class was never so interesting before taking his classes and he has a great sense of humor if you are paying attention and he is an intellectual hunk.
SO boring, trails off at the ends of his sentences, really easy class, nice guy, cheesy humor
Great Class!! I actually learned something!
A very nice and informative professor. Memorize your test study guide three day before each test, have enought sleep the day before the test, and Rock the A's.
stale humor, mumbles ... essay question on exam is 50% of grade, not mentioned in syllabus...too much writing for a jc history class and 3 online writing assignments
exams have an essay ? worth 1/2 the exam grade- HE DID NOT STATE THIS ON SYLLABUS..plus 3 (3-4paragraph)online writing assignments, dry humor.. but very knowledgeable and helpfull..till i dropped cuz of essay question
Extremely knowledgable and informative. You can tell he is passionate about the subject. Gives clear study guides for the exam that explain the essay prompts. tells you everything you need to know. grea teacher
If you enjoy tests that include essay questions, then take this class. If you attend class regularly, you will seldom need the book. VERY good professor who is both very bright and supportive.
very good teacher
he is a nice guy. his lectuares almost cover everything u need for the eaxm.it was an easy class; a few writting assignments and exams.do a good job on those,u will be fine.if u like early european history take his class. it was intresting.
4 writing assignments was ONE too many. 3 is a good number. Dr Utgaard is a great teacher, you can learn from his lectures even if youre passed out in the back. he's Very well prepared, and can cover everything, chronologically & memorized. impressive!
Took the class online. It was very organized and you're able to communicate with the other students. If you don't enjoy reading about history and doing it on your own, don't take, its very boring. His lecture class is more interesting. He's good, take him.
Very easy to understand, explains things well. Straight forward tests, gives study guides with 3 essay questions beforehand(2 of them appear on the test) Great guy!

online class. An awsome teacher that is very willing to help you. He will do what it takes to help you understand and make sure you can pass your class, without just giving you the grade.
Extremely easy teacher. If you take good notes, you don't have to open the book once. 3 tests, 3 papers. He gives a useful study guide for tests and the essay questions ahead of time. Can be kind of boring but is very clear. Easy "A"
I wish all teachers were like Utgaard. His lectures include everything you need to know. 3 Short papers, all on interesting books. Tests include essay ?s but he gives them to you beforehand. An incredibly intelligent professor, not a very easy class, but if you show up, take good notes, and study, its an easy A. This class is what SDSU is like!!!
Easy class but he assigns a lot of reading...5 books! Anyhow, I didn't read them (just found cheat notes) but I did the essay and got B's and A's. Suggestion: Put a lot of thought into your papers and you can slack on the discussion part.
Great Teacher. He is fair and as long as you follow his study sheets and take notes you should do well.
Took it during summer. Very cool teacher. Exams questions are all straight from the notes. Two separate readings (and papers on them). Other than that, he's very helpful and clear.
GREAT PROFESSOR! He knows his stuff! He's not afraid to tell you he doesn't know the answer and is very understanding. He cracks jokes and his tests aren't that hard. He even provides a study guide. Notes come from lectures and you don't really need the book. Only the lazy can fail! TAKE HIM!
VERY easy course. come to class, dont buy the book, and you're set. he's pretty funny and cracks lame jokes. take him.
Cool teacher who's very fair. Study guides for tests are very clear and helpful. A little writing involved, but still pretty easy.
have trouble staying awake . . . . knowledgable guy but super boring
I am taking this class online, and it is ridiculous. I find that the discussion questions exam questions, and papers are fairly easy. Problem is...Grading? Not so fair. Don't like the class at all. Requirements lead you to believe one thing, and then comes your grade & some how you managed and F! Too bad I WAS interested in History...
Easy class, Three tests, two papers. No Homework.
I thought the class was good. The tests are easy, they follow the study guide closely. The discussion questions are also easy. There isn't a lot of work to do. I thought it was an easy A.
BORING !WILL PUT YOU TO SLEEP. serious speech impediment. the the the thats all folks.. so monotone i could bare keep awake with DOUBLE EXPRESSO! he sounds like BEN STEIN "clear eyeeeees". too much writing for a lower div class. its 100 for christs' sake! 3 papers & essays on the test. BITE ME
Anyone who doesn't pass this class has only themselves to blame! If you like a dry, sarcastic wit, Utgaard is the man. You'll often find a small minority of the class laughing outloud while the not-so-brilliant students remain dumbfounded. Utgaard is not above having fun at student's expenses, so you have to stay sharp. Awesome professor!
This is a great class to take as long as you show up and take notes, read, and do the study guides you will do fine in this class. Is willing to help if you ask him!!!
If you can find another teacher, DO IT.
Worst class and teacher ever. Class was online. Teacher rarely said a word. No help. No email responses. Weekly Discussion Board posts needed, not graded. Papers graded weird. Inconsistent grading. If you can find a better teacher for a class, please do.
I took an online class with him and even though the class was pretty easy and simple, I do not feel we had enough work to do to actually learn. The only grades we got were tests and papers. So if you were bad at either, you would not be able to pass. I think he needs to be more active in the class and participate more if he continues doing online.
I've taken two of his classes and I love him! All you need to do is go to class, take notes, and do the study guides. He's very helpful and easy to approach. If you don't pass his class you're an idiot. He helps out everyone by extra credit, giving us our essay questions before the test, an giving us an outline of his tests (study guide). He's grea
MOST FAVORITE TEACHER EVER!!! i have had him twice and absolutely love him.
Had an online class with him. Although he seems like a very knowledgeable and interesting teacher with a lot to teach, he was not very helpful as far as communication. No email responses. Weekly Discussion Board posts needed, not graded. Papers graded weird. Inconsistent grading.
A very friendly teacher, willing to engage in knowledgeable discussions with the students and has an excellent sense of humor!
Great teacher who let learn but was eager to help with any problems. I would recommend this teacher to all.
I absolutely LOVE this teacher, he was my history teacher, that made history fun. The class overall was pretty easy, and it was extremely helpful. He is also an easy grader... he re sparked my interest in history, and the books that he made us read were fairly interesting, I would recommend this teacher to anybody considering a history class :)
Needs to brush up on his online teaching skills and grading system. Have had many online classes and he rates below average. Should stick with classroom teaching and forget online classes.
Took his online class, and I felt like I was in an English class. I had to read a couple of books and majority of my grade was from the papers I wrote regarding the readings. If you hate to write or have not taken a college writing class yet, this is not the class for you.
Online Modern World Hist, not hard but frustrating with the grading scale & distribution of work load. You'll go 2 weeks with minimal work then have 2 exams, a paper and regular homework the next week. Tests are so few questions if you miss 1 answer you're doomed. A lot of reading and research. Not a bad class overall, but very time consuming.
I really like Dr. Utgaard. He's kind of funny sometimes...or at least he tries. He also attempts to keep things as interesting as possible. His class is really easy, and a good GPA-booster! His study guides have EVERYTHING that will be on the test.
I loved Dr. Utgaard he makes the class challenging yet very informative. You cannot leave his class without learning something new. I also love the fact he crushes distractions created by students who have no desire to learn. He removes them from the class allowing the students who do want to learn to have the opportunity.
I hated learning about history until i took his class. He seems really dry and bland at first, but when his personality shows he can be funny. His grading is really easy and he makes the boring subject, rather interesting. Take his class and you will be happy to go to class
i absolutely love this teacher! Utgaard was one of the main reasons why I chose to become a history major. He is very insightful and has such a quirky cute sense of humor that to be honest, not everybody understands. You will learn allot!
DO NOT take his online class, he is horrible with the grading, he does not give you the grade you deserve, I think he does not want students to pass with an A with the way he grades. He NEVER responds to emails, and if you are a student in his online class you will get very frustrated.
Easy class as long as you attend, take notes, and study for the three tests. Passed with 104%. Extra credit is worth A LOT! DO IT! Easy grader on formal papers. Tests are multiple choice with an essay. Both easy as long as you study the material. I highly recommend this teacher!
Not a difficult course. Easy A. If you do the work and take notes this is an easy A. Really is interested in History and teaches it in an interesting way. Not a boring class, and he keeps topics relevant. Has a topics packet that was - very - interesting. A good teacher. Lots of extra credit. Take him for interest and for an easy A.
Hes not a bad teacher, just a boring one. The class is super easy to pass if you just read the textbook, his questions are all based off what you read. The lectures will put you to sleep if your not careful.
Took class online.Teacher seems very nice and is helpful. His lectures are very helpful for the exams.Class can be boring if you don't like history.Weekly discussions are required and he likes it when you write more than expected and answer his questions very specific. Two papers are due for the class. There was no exta credit offered in this.
Not a very good online class. Lots of work and a real tough grader. Not much feedback. I got the feeling that he didn't like online classes.
Good instructor
One of the better professors I've encountered in an online course. He comes off as a bit intimidating at first but you'll quickly realize that he genuinely cares about his students and will keep up with you to make sure you do well. His topics are interesting; as long as you show you care, he will too. Show up(online), do the work, and you'll pass
Great person, very calm, and teaches very well. He is also funny. I have never had another teacher like him, and I loved him because I got along with him well. He also reminds me of the evil doctor in the new movie "The Amazing Spider-Man," but he is not evil, he just looks like the doctor.
Had to read the Persepolis, Propaganda at its best. Typically can't review quiz's but when I asked he unlocked the program and I found out he did not give me all the points that I had earned.
Took this online, so I didn't really get to know his personality but he seemed really chill. Weekly discussion boards, and 4 exams (non-cumulative), 1 research paper, 1 timed writing. I was very intimidated by the timed writing, but don't be, it was not bad at all. However, you have to read a lot. If you're a disciplined student, you'll get an A.
Prof. Utgaard is a great teacher, i took his History 100 in fall 2013.he has a great low key sense of humor, makes history interesting and relevant. just take notes, do all assignments, attempt all the exams and follow all the slides and everything he writes on the board and anything less than an A is impossible! i highly recommend him !
I am currently Dr. Utgaards History online course and it is fairly easy to this point. The class is very easy if you just focus and do the reading. The Dboards were worth quite a bit of points, so don't forget to do them ALL. It's a lot of reading but the test every four weeks are only 15ish questions which makes it very easy to get a good grade.
he gives topic essay not broad topics, grading doesn't explain what you did wrong so you fix it in next discussion so if you do it again not a mind reader you wont know and docs double off in next assignment.
I took his Early World History course back in the Fall of 2014. Since I was actually interested in History I took down all of the notes and I passed with a fair grade and I barely touched the textbook. His humor can be a hit or miss. There are some essays you have to do with other books so be prepared to write. I would take this class again.
He is awesome. He helped me lot even though i always came late and never studyed; however, he is awesome and i end up with C yeah yeah
Dr. Utgaard is one of the best professors I've had. He makes the lectures interesting. The exams are really easy if you study, the exams are mainly on vocabulary (everything you need to know is on the study guide he gives you). The essays he assigns are very easy to follow and tells you exactly what you need to include in your essay.
awesome teacher. he cares for the students and is willing to help outside of his class.
I took this class as a summer online class. This was not an easy class and definitely not an easy A. I would only recommend it if you are very dedicated and work very well on your own. Tons of reading and tons of online research. I would recommend this class but maybe as an actual lecture class, I would not take again online.
If you take decent notes, you should be in good shape for upcoming exams. Make him laugh and he will look at you during lectures, making you focus more and make class more enjoyable. Love, AD
I really enjoy taking his classes and his sense of humor. He knows his stuff and if you enjoy history this class is an easy A. Stay on top of hw and attend class and you'll do great!
Dr. Utgaard is an ok teacher that heavily bases his class off of purely lectures. Theres virtually zero interactive participation throughout the semester, so if youre antisocial, I guess this is a plus. Theres not much help with guidance to ensuring a good grade, but as long as you take detailed notes and use the study guides, youll pass.
Really great teacher, he enjoys what he does and inspires people! Though the tests are a little heavy, you have to study to pass. Other than that, I really enjoyed the way he teaches. I recommend Mr. Utgaard!
I took an intersession class of his so it was constant work, but Dr. Utgaard was a wonderful, thoughtful teacher. His lectures were concise and interesting, and we watched parts of two Ken Burns docs (which I LOVED). His tests we not very difficult, and the homework was easy. It's a history class so get ready to read and memorize stuff!
I took this as a summer class and really enjoyed it. Stay organized, read the chapters and fill out the outlines that he gives every week because that is what the tests are based on. Each week you have to answer a set of questions for the discussion post and then reply. If you have a free schedule, I highly recommend this teacher and class!
If you want a prof that doesn't answer emails, is unclear about how to get a good grade, and is a very tough grader than he's the prof for you. There's also the fact that I was out of town for a funeral and, without my knowledge, changed the day of the exam to the first day I was back and did not let me retake it or try to do extra credit.
The course is lecture heavy but is interesting and engaging. The way he teaches is clear and detailed. He answers questions outside of class shortly after they are asked and he provides feedback for every assignment. The units show how creative humanity is and how the Humanities is are fascinating.
Professor Utgaards positive vibe and kind disposition make for a very inviting learning experience. He believes in his students . Very professional and experienced he has all the skills needed to help you be successful in his class. Grading is clear. Assignments are interesting. He provides all you need to prep and be ready for the exams.
If you can avoid this professor, DO IT at all costs! Almost every test and quiz I've taken was extremely hard and I didn't finish because of the time limits he puts on the tests. WAY too short. Gave me a F grade on an essay that met all requirements in the instructions and that I spent so much time on. Just take someone else, trust me!
He was a great teacher! Test are based on lectures but he has a study guide that is very helpful, doesn't throw curve balls. Has 2 papers due but there not super long and doable. Very organized and responds to emails fast. You do not need the textbook just take good lecture notes! Have to buy 2 books for the papers but there interesting.
Hes very hard to negotiate and compromise. Classes are easy but so many things to watch and write.
professor keeps randomly uploading assignments and making them due in a short amount of time. they've uploaded a new assignment on thursday for the past two weeks, and makes them due on sunday. while it is doable, i feel like this is unfair because they dont take into account that students also have other classes and plan their week accordingly.
Im taking Professor Utgarrd for two classes and I absolutely love him. He gives discussions or quizzes every week which are usually due that Thursday but they are very easy and if youve done the reading and watch the videos it is an easy A. I am taking him online so take that into account.
I found this class to be confusing with the projects we had to do but the professor is very understanding and will help you when you need it.
This guy is a TOUGH GRADER. The tests and quizzes are straightforward but if you miss a few you pretty much failed. You will do two papers off books, but they're interesting. A quiz or a discussion is due at the end of the week. No extra credit. The quizzes are hard and they're worth a lot of points. Find another professor while you can.
I took the accelerated version during the spring semester. Get ready to watch a butt ton of videos. You can't pass this class without watching them. Would recommend taking the normal semester version of this class. Besides the main textbooks, you need to read a total of four books for two essays. The quizzes and exams are worth a lot. Be prepared!
4 week course from the Restoration Era after the Civil war to Present day. Overall there were quite a lot of lectures to watch I enjoyed them all as the information being given was extremally interesting to learn about and made this class a breeze to complete. Just watch the lectures, do the work, and you can Ace this class!
Not a good professor. He ignores the student and assigns extra schoolwork as if you had no obligations. I used to enjoy history, but now I don't because of this lecturer. You will not have enough time to do the assignments, therefore you must drop other classes and study history. The exam is challenging, and there is not enough time.
TOUGH GRADER ALERT. no matter how hard you worked on a paper and how perfect it came out, this professor will do anything but give you a full 100. You can answer all the prompts, have perfect punctuation, and provide more details than needed, and he still will find a way to grade you badly. doesn't help you if you reach out. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
DO NOT TAKE!! took him for 115, he literally never gives full points on film analysis' no matter how hard you try. I took him thinking he was good but he's not. Quizzes/tests are easy but lectures are really heavy. GOT A C in the class because he was a BBBBBBBB. stay away stay away stay away!
He is really a very strange professor. He is not cooperative and does not give grades because they are from his pocket. He also made history more difficult than the medical field itself. He is the worst professor I have ever known and I hated history because of him.
Not a good professor. Good luck if you take this class.
This professor is insane this professor gives us 7 questions quiz with each questions having multiple selections and you have to have it done in 12 min. Beware of his discussions because he reads each and every one of them and grades you harshly based on how he likes you as a student. Im just trying to pass and get my credits as the semester goes.
u have lectures ranging 10-20 min, discussion post with 300 wrd count and quizzes that are 5-7 Qs. u can download the transcript from lectures which made it easier to do exams/quiz. exams are easy too, everything is on the lecture vids. u have films to watch but u only have like 3-4. u do have two books but there easy. i took this as 4 week course
STAY AWAY!! this professor was the WORST seriously nothing I did was enough all the assignments that I worked hard on would end up with only half creds or zero. HE IS HORRIBLE. he made my life so much harder in this class and he was not helpful at all. He has no leniency any time i did my work he would say it is not detailed enough.
Don't let the negative comments discourage you from taking one of his classes!! His lectures never ran long, they weren't uninteresting, and he is not a tough grader. He makes it a point to leave feedback on assignments. He also gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Dr. Utgaard genuinely loves history and it shows in his teaching.
Overall, a prof I can respect as his fully online class was very organized for the most part and he responded to emails in a timely manner. Some of the mapping assignments seemed unnecessary as it is a history class and not a geography class, but he graded them fairly to say the least. Definitely not as bad as other people have described on here.
A fair professor who had an organized class. His assignments, while somewhat time consuming and sometimes tedious, were fair and were graded fairly based upon correctness and effort. One paper in the class based on an assigned book on World War II and 3 exams. Not as bad to the extent other people have rated him on here.
DON"T take his class if you don't like to watch 3 hours long videos of him yapping. I was working hard and providing the most details on my work but he wanted more and he was deducting points because of details and he accused me using AI. STAY away from him. His videos are tedious and wast of time. HARD grader, looking for small details to dedeuct
His instructions for assignments are unclear so I do what anyone else would do and ask the prof to at least explain the assignment to me. Good luck getting a reply. By the time I got my reply the assignment had already been overdue and he wouldn't accept my late work...
Absolutely STAY AWAY from this class, his instructions on assignments are unclear, and he will not respond to any of your emails and he's is extremely strict when it comes to grading. I had a B before I submitted my final paper, he didint grade until 2 weeks after I submitted and gave me 0 saying that I did it incorrectly, TERRIBLE PROFESSOR
Im taking this course fully online and so I expected to not learn much, but the lectures are really well done. Assignments are really straightforward, and he is extremely communicative, usually responding the day you send an email. Absolutely brutal on grading though. I am taking this as a 4 week tbf so not the full experience.
Lectures are packed with info, but worth watching. Use Unstuck study and other study tools to ace the quizzes and exams - they're trickier than they seem. Overall, a manageable class if you put in the work.
Posts hours worth of lecture videos and even if you write literally everything down from the videos he will say its not enough and needs more details. I dont know what he expects to be honest, theres not much more detail in the notes i can take than writing down everything in the lectures. STAY AWAY.
Do not pick this professor (Peter u) as one of your humanity or history classes becasue it'll be a nightmare. Does not help you out with understanding the assignment nor asking your questions when you email him.Very bad professor, tough grader as well.Gave me a zero for the first assignment of the the semester, which was simply introducing myself.
Dr U is amazing. Everything is on paper, no electronics. He gives detailed lectures and talks about the topics long enough to take extensive notes before switching slides. The tests are mostly multiple choice and some are open note. I've turned things in late and he's very understanding and accepts them. There are opportunities for extra credit!
You have to pay to lectures, as long as you take even ok notes you'll be fine on the exams. Utgaard gives good explanations of events and tells jokes, and it makes everything easy to remember. He has a habit of trailing off at the end of the stuff he's explaining, and it can make it hard to hear. Other than that, books are cheap or free that's cool
