Very good professor. It truly shows he enjoys teaching Biochem. He focuses on clearly explaining the course material, not just reiterating what the textbook has written and is always available for assistance. I highly recommend this professor.
While attendance is not required for the grade, I highly recommend as he has his own way of explaining the topics. He provides pdf of his powerpoint on blackboard after exam so don't copy everything on them just the things he emphasizes! Quizzes are memorization from text but exams are more on his lectures. Do well on quizzes helps get a good grade
He is pretty fair on the grading. There are three quizzes with questions straight from the text and answers you can memorize that count for a big portion of your grade. For the exams just pay attention to the things emphasized on his power point. I didn't like this textbook at all, he did a good job clarifying the concepts. And hes super nice/funn
Pretty OK class..Tests arn't bad at all, are off lecture slides. he explains and way more than you need to know but he makes it clear what you should study. Book may help but wasn't worth buying. I got an A w/o reading.30 point quizes will raise your grade just memorize practice probs he gives you.be sure to bug him for a practice exam!!
He is a really good teacher. It is not an easy class but he does his best to make the class easier. If you have any questions go to his office hours he will tell you right away if it is worth your time to be stuck on that section.
blech.
He is nice. But you'll have no idea about criteria on final grading.
Really difficult class. Average on tests is a low D. He is all over the place when he teaches, and it's hard to follow sometimes. I've gone to his office hours a lot and he usually gives his students looks like "are you seriously asking me this question?". A and B student here guys; this is one of the worst teachers I've ever had at state.
His tests had very little to do with materials found in the book.
Right now, I am just gonna write the whole truth! His lectures are hard to follow. He blames us for not studying 10 hr. per week. If he doesn't provide us the needed materials for the tests, how can we study to be prepared? If you don't wanna repeat this course, don't you dare choose him! All other comments about him are lies! Take it from me!
This class is pretty hard. There is so much material to comprehend. Tests are ridiculous! Average was a D/D-. Only thing saving you is the quizzes. I got a c- and retook the class w/ dr. love. actually I noticed 1/2 the class was retaking it. Dr. Love is so much clearer about what he wants you to study. Im getting an A w/ Love Avoid Van der Geer!
Van der geer is very enthusiastic and tries, but was just too confusing. Go to his office hours, they'll help a little. Read the chapters before going to lectures, and memorize the quizzes. The tests were HARD: random, irrevelant to the slides and book (etc). Hardest class I've taken so far. I'm a A/B student.
As long as you do the homework for this class, you should be able to ace the quizzes. Use his lecture notes as a reference to what he emphasizes in each chapter, then read those sections in the book IN DETAIL. You must put hours and hours into this class in order to do well!
Prof. Van der Geer is not worth taking. He is bluntly rude during office hours and if you ask a question or try to answer one of his questions in lecture he makes you feel stupid because it was not his answer. Doesn't give extra credit because he said he is too lazy to grade. Quiz's are almost identical to hw. Exams are all over the place.
3 quizzes and 3 exams. Quizzes are exactly like hw. You must do well on the quizzes b/c you'll need them to boost your grade! Exams are pretty difficult and the final is extremely difficult! Will tell you to learn/memorize certain things but then won't ask about them on the exam. Class is curved but only because everyone does so poorly.
His teaching philosophy is to not tell you specifics about what he will test you on; he simply expects you to study hard. I respect that, but for a class like 365 there is SO much material that memorizing everything is just not possible. Focus on lecture slides, and looking up in the book what is not clear from slides alone. Quizzes = HW questions
Peter is a great teacher. This class is very difficult, however, the material is interesting which makes the class worth it. His teaching method is a little unorthodox, but I enjoyed going to lecture. This is a very advanced chem/bio course so if you complain about it, you probably should think of another major.
Hilarious, fun, hard. C'mon people, grow up. It's an upper division biochem, what do u expect? You're probably trying to go dent/med/vet, so this is a little baby warm up. Gonna have to earn your grade here, but an A is very possible. His tests are mostly very fair, with an occasionaly asinine question or two.
He is a good teacher and he knows the material well. Quizes are easy, but test are hard. Sort of all over the place. Grading scale makes it fair though.
I have no idea why is he even teaching?
so unapproachable. and he can be rude when you ask him questions, makes you feel a bit stupid. do not recommend him at all.
You can tell he hates teaching.
Unless you want to teach yourself, do not take him. He makes you feel stupid for not knowing the material the first day of class.
I need to take this class again for sure to pass. However, I swear to God, if I ever take him again, I will die on the every first day of this class! Please, remind me, everybody, to take a different professor.
He knows his stuff. I like him better than Dr. Love. However, he does have mood swings sometimes he's nice sometimes he's mean. He is really unapproachable he makes you feel stupid.
VDG is one smart Dutch chemist, but isn't too helpful. Biochemistry is definitely NOT AN EASY SUBJECT... so do prepare to set aside a good 2 hours/day for reviewing lectures. Book COMES IN HANDY to cover gray areas you may have from his slides. At the beginning of each lecture he recaps the previous lecture- PAY ATTENTION to that!
First off he is really smart, and knows his stuff. The reason why he gets a bad rap is that he expects us to master the material so we are prepared for chem366 and beyond. He is very unapproachable though and when asked what to focus on for midterms and finals he simply expects us to know everyhting. His motto is "americans are lazy" study hard!!
He throws in some trick questions from gen chem and o-chem that he assumes that we know already. Of course, we should not forget anything from prerequisites, but a good instructor would always do a quick review of what to expect on the tests. He should not just be so assumptive like that! He doesn't like teaching for sure!
You learn a lot in this class, especially if you don't have a lot of biology knowledge. Quizzes are straight from the homework and the exams aren't too bad. Study the slides and read the book. The final exam is long and comprehensive. There isn't an assigned grade scale but he curved the final grade.
This class was a easy! The quizzes, we had three worth 40 pts, were free points if you simply did the homework (often were the exact same but different numbers). The tests could be tricky, but I studied a moderate amount of time and did the homework for practice and ended up with an A without the curve. The class was curved (80% = A-).
A very clever Dutch professor. His quizes are straight from the homework, so that is very helpful. His exams are not very bad. This class includes a ton of things to memorize and learn. take good notes in lecture, and DO NOT fall behind. Go ask him questions if you don't understand something.
awesome and fun to listen to at his lectures. great in office hours. 3 quizes 40pts each directly from hw i mean verbatim! exams are fair just know your stuff. every now and then there will be a question from left field on the exam but curve makes it extremely fair 85=A, 80=A-, final is cummulative and depending how i did I can get an A! #24
I couldn't manage to get higher than a B+ on his tests, he tests on the most random things! He is pretty funny and his dry sarcasm is entertaining. Overall i'd say it might be hard to get an A, but not hard to pass the class if that is all you're looking to do. Take notes and pay attention to what he reviews in the beginning of each lecture
I liked him a lot. His class is o chem/chem 200/bio 203 all in one. He does have a nice curve. He will also ask to come in front of the class and write to get extra credit so do it. the quizzes are word for word the HW so that is easy 120 pts out of 500. book is nice to have but not a must. I got an A-, A is possible but you have to work for it.
The professor wants a lot of interaction from students. Lectures do not cover all material: book is a necessity. No tricks on exams. I would definitely take another class from him.
This was his first time teaching the class and he was basically just using the tools the textbook provided him with. He seems like a very bright man but this was chemistry for nursing which he is obviously not a nurse.
Went to class in the beginning and then realized that his powerpoints were pretty much word for word from the book. A lot of online homework. 3 midterms and a final, and the last midterm is only a few days before the accumulative final. Lab is fairly easy and only once a week. Not that great of a teacher for a nursing chem class.
Most material was easy to understand; I just fell behind. 1st 23 of the class cover basic chemistry (stuff you learned in high school). Tests for these 2 sections weren't difficult; again just fell behindmade dumb mistakes on tests (ex: used the wrong formula). Last 13 of the class was harder conceptually. some ?'s are recycled on the final.
If you don't have a strong background in biology I don't recommend taking this course. I took it (chem major) and got a B+, but it was a pretty frustrating semester. He teaches the course as if we're all biology people. His powerpoints are empty, so you have to pay attention and catch everything he says. His exams are pretty tough as well.
This was Van der geer's first year teaching nursing chemistry, and he did it well. His first test was so easy but it made me underestimate the next few tests. I skipped a couple of classes and I got a C on that test, sadly. Do attend class! It is SO EASY to fall behind! You'll tell yourself you'll catch up, but you won't! He expects particiption
Professor Van Der Geer was such a great professor. He really does his best to make the topic understandable and is really nice. I suggest going to office hours because he's even more helpful when it's one-on-one. He has dry humor that lightens up the class and is an interesting lecturer. His exams were also extremely straight-forward. Great guy!
He's difficult to understand and is all over the place with his lectures. He comes off condescending so be prepared. Class isn't mandatory so I recommend that you read the book.
going to class won't matter. self-study.
Never went to class but still passed. Be ready to read alot.
There is a ton of online hw. You definitely have to study in this class. Lectures are practically useless because he has a thick accent so it's difficult to understand, plus he puts his slides on BB. He is very helpful if you ask for clarification, though. 3 tests and a final. The final is cumulative. Tests are straightforward, just tough material.
Lectures were easy at first, but don't skip them later in the semester. He seems very energetic but often judgemental towards students. Keep up with reading because its easy to fall behind. Tests are okay as long as you study.
I really enjoyed this class. It definitely was challenging and I had to study a lot but it was well worth it. The lab helps boost your grade a lot so make sure to attend that. If you miss a lecture or two it shouldn't hurt your grade too badly, but the material gets more dense and complicated as you progress so make sure to stay on top of it.
Peter was knowledgeable, funny, helpful, and enthusiastic, but the subject itself is pretty difficult. You will have to read the textbook and do homework every week. Make sure to go to class especially after the first midterm, because it starts to get tougher. Make sure to attend labs and boost your grade.
BUY THE BOOK. His tests are Tough but he refuses old tests from the past. His accent and handwriting is atrocious. He's a really mean professor, super dry humor, but he's a nice guy when you go to talk to him like at office hours. Make sure to study Power points and homework questions that he assigns. the curve in the class is huge.
He is a really annoying professor to have. He can make you feel really dumb in class, he asks bad, irrelevant questions in lecture, and he only reads from the lecture slides! You don't have to go to class if you can keep up with lecture slides on your own time. Homework is really helpful for learning the material even though its really long.
He's funny and all but heres the thing. The material itself was not that difficult so if you read the book and do the online hw, that should help you learn the material; however, he's all over the place with how he teaches it so the lecture is confusing.
He does a good job of giving you the resources you need to succeed in the class, and honestly if you do the homework and read each chapter thoroughly, yo will be fine. But his lectures were all over the place and difficult to follow and if anyone asked questions or didn't understand something, he could (unintentionally) come across as a bit rude.
Good lecturer, but you can definitely miss class and just go to the midterms, he does not take attendance. It's good to go to class because otherwise you have to teach yourself and towards the end of the class the material gets pretty difficult. He is a great lecturer and takes questions and answers them well. Theres many chances for extra credit
Van Der Geer is a great professor with a lot of knowledge. His lectures are not necessary at all and neither is attendance. The textbook he uses is really good and reading and taking notes on the text will guarantee an easy A. Be sure to keep up with doing the homework and get help from classmates if you need it.
He was a good professor. I read the book and came to class and got an A in the class. I would recommend to stay up to date and go to class. His homeworks are much easier than the tests and he gives lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Peter Van der Geer is one of the best teachers I have ever had at state. Lecture isn't required, but I don't understand why you wouldn't want to go; he's very informative and hilarious! Read the book before class, do the homework, and you'll be fine. Also, he hands out extra credit during lecture like its candy so PARTICIPATE!
A few weeks before the first midterm, i decided i was never showing up to his lectures again because i hated his teaching... he goes off topic all the time and doesn't seem knowledgable. I still managed to get an easy A in his class by teaching myself everything. Do well in the first (VERY easy) exam because the last chapter is significantly harder
Great class.
A great teacher and passionate about his material. I disagree with many of the comments and feel you need to attend lecture. His lectures are engaging and well presented. He tells stories to merge the concepts with real-world applications. This course isn't easy. Go to his office hours or talk to him before or after class for clarification.
Unfortunately, he is the only Chem 102 professor so you're kinda stuck with him, but there are some things you should know: 1) tests are based on the homework-but still read the book/take notes 2) he's very condescending 3) its not worth going to class-he posts his lecture slides so just do that+the book 4) memorization is key!
His lectures left most of us more confused so really just study the book and the homework. The problems in the book were very helpful and his tests were pretty straight forward
His lectures were not helpful at all so I stopped going after the first midterm. Just do the online homework, look at his powerpoints, read the textbook and study and you'll do well on the midterms. There are three of them and then the final is cumulative. The grade is made up of lab, hw, midterms and the final.
Honestly, sucks. His lectures focus on a few topics of all the work and it's better to just read the book and do the online work. The online work is what the tests are on so focus on that.
Three midterms . One cumulative final. Barely anyone attends his lecture after the 1st and 2nd midterm. Go to the 1st month or 2 of lectures to participate for easy bonus points. If you don't learn from his teaching, then don't waste your time. He only makes sense when you pre-read the lesson, which is difficult when class is 3 times a week.
I was one of about 20 people who actually regularly attended lectures, so I feel qualified to say that he is a great lecturer. His teaching style is a little different, but he always takes time to review previous lectures and offers a lot of extra credit for doing problems on the board (so show up!)I almost never read the book and did just fine.
I went to his class for about a week then I stopped going. His lectures were too confusing for me, and he talked about things that didn't pertain to the material. I read the material on my own and did just fine. Hw is harder than the exams. 3 midterms and a final. First two and the final were a breeze but the third midterm was tough.
Oh man am I glad that I'm done with this class. I did attend lecture for most of the semester, but gave up going toward the end because it felt like a waste of time. This class is hard because there's a lot of online hw and midterms are difficult (especially the last one). I read the textbook from beginning to end and that is why I got an A.
First test is all gen chem and is super easy. Final is at least 50% gen chem and not too difficult. 2nd test is hard and 3rd test is awful. He DOES give C- even though it says he doesn't in his syllabus. Waste of time showing up to lecture. The homework helps the most and read the book. THICK accent. Do good in lab to help your grade.
Lectures are not interesting at all. I barely attended them after the first midterm. The third midterm is the hardest of them all. The final is cumulative and easy. I'd recommend just reading the book and doing HW and practice problems and focusing on organic chem. Also do well in labs because they are easy.
Lecture topics are very interesting. Weekly quizzes are challenging and reflect the previous week's lecture material. Try and get as much extra credit as possible through active participation in class. This will boost your grade immensely. Good luck to all.
Peter is an excellent biochemistry professor. I think Americans do not appreciate him as much he deserves. Definitely try to earn as much extra points as possible. It will increase your grade and you will write something on board which very probably will be on exam. Final Exam will include lot of previous material! Revise!Be attentive in class!
if you took general chemistry no need to go to all the lectures for the first test. test #2 is hard and test #3 is very hard so go to lecture. his teaching style is confusing so you'll probably have to read the chapter to teach your self. lecture grade is combined with lab so graded on a lot of material. 3 tests, 1 final, and Hw for each chapter.
He appears funny during lectures but if you speak with him in person he is the rudest! Going to class helps if you read beforehand. Otherwise, it's still good to attend unless you believe you will spend your time more wisely; doesn't hurt to miss a few. The tests are straightforward you just have to read the chapters before. Final is very general.
Easy class but so hard to stay motivated for it. The first midterm is a joke, the second one is a little harder, and the third one is hard but reasonable if you put work into self studying O Chem. Rude professor but would recommend only going to class to make sure you dont fall behind but you can ignore him as most the things he says are useless!
His lectures don't make sense unless you read the book before hand. While class isn't mandatory, always go and do extra credit problems in class as often as possible. The first two midterms are easy, but make sure to study a lot for the third. Do the homework in groups to score higher.
He's a pretty cool professor and I think he taught pretty well. It was just a lil difficult sometimes because of the room we were in + his accent. Strongly recommend sitting at the front if you actually care about learning. You do have to do a lot of review at home to fully grasp the concepts but it's not impossible and he offers a lot of EC.
He is rude. He completely demoralizes you and gets paid to do it. His lectures are pretty interesting and his weekly quizzes are sometimes hard and sometimes easy. But, nevertheless, this guy is super tough. Make sure to bring a recorder for his lectures. I am so glad that this is the last class I will have to take him. Go to Huxford if you can.
This was my second biochemistry class with Peter and I like him a lot. He teaches you not only theory but also how biochemistry and science work in practice. To get a good grade record every lecture, listen to them later, make notes, and memorize EVERYTHING. He also has a great sense of humor, if you don't have one simply don't take his classes.
He is a funny, smart guy but the lectures felt so slow. Many people would skip and he relies on the class to answer questions and stay involved but our class was pretty silent. Skim the chapters before class so you don't have to take as many notes in class and do the online homework, it was pretty easy. Tests are all multiple choice.
He's a really funny, passionate guy but as a professor he is always going on tangents that dont pertain to the material. The tests are all multiple choice and honestly not that bad. The third test is by far the worst but still doable if you are willing to put in the time to teach yourself organic chem
I wish I didn't have to take this class tbh, this class is based on 3 midterms, Mastering Chemistry online hwk, & a cumulative final. The professor himself is very rude, don't bother emailing him for any kind of help. The readings were not too hard but I recommend mostly studying his slides for the exams. Don't go to lecture it's a waste of time.
3 midterms, 1 final. Does not drop any of them. 3rd final will be EXTREMELY difficult. First midterm and final are really easy relative. 2nd midterm slightly harder than first midterm. First 2 midterms are actually pretty easy and possible for anyone to get 100s on. Do well on those so you can take the hit from the third midterm and still get an A
Average professor. Read textbook or go to lecture, pick one and stick with it. No one showed up to lecture. 1st midterm - easy. 2nd midterm - study NAMING. 3rd midterm - good luck, hardest of the 3. None are dropped. Final is cumulative and EASY. Homework is tedious BUT is great study material for midterms. Offers some extra credit IN CLASS.
I never did any of the in class EC which meant solving a problem in front of the class however the EC is copied from txtbk exs. Midterm 1,2, and the final are easy, but really know your material for the third midterm. Take the online homework seriously to understand concepts, it will save your life. His teaching is hard to follow so read the text.
Really good teaching skills, and he measures your understandings. I think he knows his subject very well
Intermediary Metabolism was pretty fun with him. His pop quizzes were mostly mechanisms or structures, so study those. His tests are straight forward, and overall he was a good professor
He loves his subject, he knows his subject! He inspires students with his attitude towards science and biochemistry! Great person, great professional! Don't say that you don't like biochemistry, he will be offended since he loves his field so much! Professor Geer makes you think like a scientist!
His lectures were pretty good and he likes to make a lot of jokes. His tests aren't too bad as long as you study and the final was pretty easy. The textbook is really helpful and I wish I used it more. Also, make sure you don't forget to do the homework.
if you are not going to read the book at all then don't take it. His power points tells you just the main points in the book, but in the exams he goes really specific. if you don't memorize what you read then you are not going to pass the class. he expects you to memorize everything he says. He talk about so many things that doesn't relate to exam.
Pretty good professor, makes a lot of jokes and keeps the lectures somewhat entertaining. A LOT of homework and the tests are kind of hard.
He is such a rude professor. He has office hours, but will not help you unless you go to all of them. My friend went to an office hour before one of our midterms and he refused to help her since it was the first office our that she attended. His lectures are pointless and not helpful at all. Prepare to spend hours reading and teach yourself O chem.
Van Der Geer is very rude and not at all helpful even if you do go to his office hours. He will tell you if you haven't gone to every single office hour from day 1 there is no way to help you. His lectures are very confusing and there is not point in going. Be ready to teach yourself EVERYTHING. Read the textbook and do practice problems.
The lectures are not helpful, and he is very rude to many students.
Van Der Geer is a silly man himself, but is so smart he doesn't understand how to break down concepts for students to understand. I once attended his office hours and he refused to help me since I had not attended each of his office hours up until that point. His lectures are off track and do not help, I would highly recommend an outside tutor.
Ugh I literally can't with Peter Van Der Geer anymore. His class is so needlessly hard and he breaks things down horribly. I went to lectures for the first month or 2 of the semester but simply gave up because they would only confuse me more than when I didn't go. His class makes me cry way too much. I'm so done. He makes me feel so dumb. Thats all
Van Der Geer couldn't care less about his students. He has blamed everything on us and not his own teaching. No one I know has actually done well in the class, and if they are getting at least a B in the class, they have done hours and hours of work outside of class. Be prepared to do extensive amounts of work out of the classroom and be stressed.
VAN DER GEER MAKES ME CRY EVERYDAY BECAUSE HIS CLASS IS SO HARD FOR NO REASON. He is not a good professor and not a nice person. Get a tutor to teach you everything because van Der Geer won't.
Terrible. His lectures are pointless and he expects you to know everything and gets offended when you dont. Doesnt care about anyones grades and would be okay with failing whole class. Tests are fair except exam three and he doesnt drop or curve anything so you cant do bad. Frustrating class and lectures only touch surface of whats on exams.
gets a lot of hate but a good and funny teacher. yes, the class is mostly self-taught but the book does a good job explaining everything. his tests are straightforward and you will get a high B or an A if you do the practice problems from the book. you will easily pass if you take notes and do practice problems. do not worry
He doesn't drop any tests, if you study a bunch you still won't do amazing. Third test is actually impossible you can study a lot and still not pass it. He is also rude and his lectures suck and are too brief. Use the textbook and make flashcards. Lots of homework too. Screw van der geer and this stupid face and annoying attuide.
Van der geers chemistry class was my most difficult class this year. I studied my ass off for test 3 and failed it. The class average for thag test was a 65 if that tells you anything about its difficulty level. Lectures dont really reflect what was on the test so read the textbook!! He isnt personable
Everyone is hating on Peter but he really isnt that bad. All of his tests are doable if you put in the effort and study a lot. His third test is definitely not impossible. Just study the textbook and you will be fine. The first two tests were pretty straightforward.
He wasn't the best professor so I just read the textbook which is a great alternative. I didn't go to class all semester because his lectures didn't make sense to me. The tests are doable if you just read the textbook, take notes from the textbook, and redo the homework to prepare for the tests. These 3 things were all I did and it worked for me.
Everyone hates him but honestly just read the textbook, do the homeworks and go over his slides. If you just stay on top of the work it isnt that bad. I suggest just teaching yourself from the textbook right off the bat its a lot easier. get really high lab points too and just try your best honestly dont give up and the third test isnt impossible
I do not recommend taking Van Der Geer unless absolutely necessary. He is not the best at explaining concepts clearly and his lectures are a bit disorganized. There are a total of three midterms and one cumulative final. In order to prepare for the exams, I suggest re-doing all the HW and jotting down notes as you go to study from.
He is as rude as others say he is so don't count on him to be there for you, instead use your TA. This class was a pain but I was able to get an A was bc I read the chapters, memorized important topics, and applied the concepts to practice questions. I didn't attend lecture much bc it wouldn't help me at all. Study many days-few weeks before tests.
He made an interesting subject sound so boring. I went to the lectures but they were not beneficial. The textbook is your best friend and Youtube chem videos. The exams were pretty fair if you studied for a couple of days prior and understood the basics of it. He said grades were not curved but ended up curving them. The class was a pain & hw.
honestly, be prepared to teach yourself this whole entire class. nothing is direct, and your only source or resource is a lab manual from the 1800s. if you ask van der geer a single question, he will turn it to make fun of you and indirectly call you an idiot. i rather fail an assignment then ask him questions.
I would not attend lectures. I studied by reading the book; his lectures were not helpful.
Professor Van der Geer is nice, but easily goes on tangents and makes unnecessary jokes during lecture. There are 3 exams and a cumulative final, with no exams dropped. You can stop going to class after a few weeks, as the lecture slides are bare minimum and straight from the book, but make sure to read and keep up with the material.
Offers a lot of extra credit in class to do examples on the board. Attendance was not mandatory. Very entertaining, but the course is very dense.
If chemistry doesn't come naturally to you, you may be in some trouble. I needed a tutor and usually chemistry comes easily to me. His lectures suck and are way too faced paced at times. You need to teach yourself or pay someone to teach you. He can be funny sometimes but it's annoying when you are trying to learn. He's also pretty unapproachable.
Class is primarily based on three main tests and a cumulative final. The first test is a walk in the park, the second test begins to ramp up the difficulty a bit, and the third test is by far the hardest but far from impossible. Since the final is cumulative it is cushioned by easier units which helps. Read the textbook and review pearson hw q's!
If you take Peter there is NO reason to show up to his lecture. Just read the textbook and you will be fine. He wasn't awful just when I tried to attend his class I always regretted it.
This professor expects more than should be expected and does not pace his lectures well. He is condescending of almost all of his students, has said and done many things that could definitely be considered sexist. I would not ever take from him but unfortunately he is the only professor for the Nursing O-Chem class.
Lectures were unbearably boring and useless because all of the information he went over is straight from the textbook and he rarely elaborated on anything. He wasn't nice, wasn't helpful, and wasn't approachable. Ask him for help and he'll make sure you leave feeling dumb and still confused. Sadly the only Chem teacher for Nursing.
He is a little demeaning, especially if you are a girl in his Chem 102 class. The lectures are posted online and can be perfectly translated from the textbook. There are three midterms and a final( with the last midterm being less than a week away from the final. He does not like to answer questions when asked and often makes you feel bad.
By far the hardest chem class I've ever taken. The tests are fair, but they're really difficult given the huge amount of material that needs to be mastered. He's not great at explaining concepts so definitely use outside resources and study to understand the material conceptually, don't just memorize.
READ THE TEXTBOOK! Prof is unapproachable, unhelpful, and inconsiderate. I did well on the exams because I read the textbook, redid the Pearson, and did the textbook problems (DO THIS PLS). His exams are fair and direct luckily but STUDY IN ADVANCE! Lots of self-teaching. Pearson hw is very tedious so give yourself enough time to do them.
You don't ever need to go to class unless you want to get extra credit because he offers extra credit everyday by drawing and solving problems on the board in front of the class. He is funny but his class is extremely hard. If I were to retake this class, I would stop showing up to class and instead carefully read the textbook.
stopped going to class after two weeks he's so useless imo. if you read the textbook and do the practice questions from it you'll be fine. he offers extra credit but it's going up to the board to answer something and if you take more than like 5 seconds he starts publically shaming you. some ppl find it funny but its mainly the annoying smarta***s
Peter was such a hard professor the first test was easy, second was the hardest for me, third was so much easier and the final was pretty ok too. He isn't caring to his students and makes them feel dumb. you don't have to go to class but reading the textbook helped me. GOOD LUCK.
He's really funny and will roast you in class but I kinda love it. Knowledgeable and pretty good at explaining things, but man biochem is tough. The course would be much more manageable if he recorded lectures, gave a study guide, or allowed a cheat sheet during exams. You're on your own in this class outside of his lectures.
Hard class but great lectures that are super engaging. He is blunt to say the least... I wish he let us have a formula sheet for exams or at least the cumulative final.
He was so unapproachable and made students feel dumb for not knowing things. His teaching style is very "old-school", with no test-prep help such as study guides, exams are paper with no aide, you can try and get EC but only for walking up to the whiteboard and doing a problem during class. If you get him, good luck and really study, not like me.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He insults his students, does not know how to teach, and only relies on excessive weekly homework to teach his students. He does not announce when the homework is assigned or due and typically assigns it on the weekends, unless he wants to assign extra.don't bother asking for help he will just belittle you.
Peter honestly seems like he hates teaching. He is very competent in the subject matter but is awful at lectures. The class is fine if you read the textbook and teach yourself the material. The lectures could be canceled and the class would probably be better.
Not a great Professor at all and is very rude whenever he is asked a question. I went to most of his lectures, and he is honestly no help. The textbook does a better job at explaining the concept. If you know the book wont be enough and will struggle throughout the semester with Chemistry, get a tutor. Tutors do a better job than he does.
Peter's class is a challenging one, but with the right approach it's doable. The textbook and unstuck study are essential study tools. Attend class for extra credit, but don't rely on lectures alone. Stay focused and you'll get through this tough course.
He is a horrible teacher honestly. He has no interest in helping you since his goal is to belittle you if you don't understand the topic instead of helping you out. Use the book and get a tutor if you know you will struggle in this class. He does extra credit if you answer a question in front of the class, but overall he's not a good Professor.
He had so many favorites in the class it was unbelievable. So many of the dorming nursing students cheated on his tests yet he never suspected a thing even when they all consistently got good grades on tests for no reason. He is a horrible teacher and belittles LEARNING students for not knowing the subject. They should fire him but money.
The class was not as hard or bad as people make it out to be. Almost all of the material is surface level, but it's just a lot. He's a compelling lecturer, but I wouldn't recommend asking him questions, ask someone else if you don't get it. If you study the concepts with flashcards and do practice problems/the homework, you'll get a good grade
I honestly thought he would be a great professor during our first lecture, but boy was I wrong. He belittled us in any way he could. Going to class and taking his tests made it feel like he just wanted us to fail. Tests were horrible, lectures don't help at all. He doesn't even lyk when hw is assigned. He doesn't help when you need it. Good Luck
He told us if we failed the first test we “shouldnt do nursing.” When going over commonly missed questions, he joked about how we would “kill our patients” because we got a badly worded question wrong. He shames you for asking questions if you aren't one of his favorites. He should be fired, but probably wont since he does research for the school.
I was nervous because of the bad reviews, but it wasn't bad at all. He goes on tangents during lectures, so attending isn't necessary, but he gives extra credit for doing problems on the board. My advice: keep up with textbook readings and do practice problems. That's all I did, and the tests were straightforward—I got As on all of them. Good luck!
He sucks but there's no other option so here's some advice. It builds quickly so it's important to keep up. I wish I went unit by unit and try to get it down to properly do the homework. The most helpful lecture to go to is after the exam as he goes over the top missed questions which helps for the final. Try to keep lab and homework grade high.
The course itself wasn't absolutely terrible. I stopped attending lectures after the first exam because it is truly a waste of time. Read the text very carefully and do all the practice problems to study for the exams. He assigns homework without any announcement. Homework is long. There is a lot of content to memorize so the course is hard.
This class was hard but so is every other chem class. Classes are not mandatory, his lectures are exactly the same as the textbook so if you do the readings you'll be fine. He offers SO much extra credit in class and people are hesitant to go up and answer the question for extra credit but I HIGHLY recommend you do it because it counts for a lot.
This class is rough for freshmen still getting used to college. He's not approachable, and makes you feel stupid if you don't know the answers to everything. I stopped going to lectures after the first month, and I literally never skip. The textbook is your friend, and do all the practice problems. Homework is assigned at random, so check daily.
Do yourself a favor and take chem somewhere else and transfer the credit. He is the only professor for nursing chem. Lectures consist of him talking about the book reading but in LESS detail and rarely does a good job at explaining concepts. Exams are extremely hard and averages were always 70 or below. Treats his students like they're idiots. rude
Van Der Geer is pretty ineffective at teaching the material, usually just reading off of the slides. He assigns long homework assignments and can be condescending to students. I stopped attending the lectures after the first midterm, focused on reading the textbook, and got better scores on the remaining tests.
This class could be worse. I agree he seems rude but don't take it personally, it seems he is joking. Go to lecture because he doesn't communicate in Canvas and emphasizes things for the test. Heavy lectures go fast. The homework isn't bad, you need to do practice problems and read the textbook too or you won't pass. You won't get exams back also.
This class is definitely really hard. The professor does give out extra credit which is weighted the same as the exam points (you do have to go up to the board to answer a question to get it). He is very passionate about the topic and very intelligent. However, his comments can be rude and condescending. His dry humor is entertaining BUT HARD CLASS
Super passionate about biochem and gives extra credit if you participate. He will tell you what he expects on exams, just don't skip class like most do and then complain about it. Biochem is hard not because of the content itself, but the amount of it. His teaching style is very discussion based and humorous. Pretty good guy overall honestly.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He degrades and belittles his students in class and goes on a tangent about random things. His lecture slides are not helpful, nor is his lecture. The tests are very hard, with confusing questions, and average around 50% or below. If you need this class, it is best not to take it with him.
Worst teacher ever. Avoid at all cost,Lectures are unhelpful, not recorded, and he doesn't communicate with students outside of class. Tests are brutal, with averages super low. Homework is 20%, 2 midterms 20% each, and a 9 chapter+ 4 appendix final is 40%. People are failing. Structure of class sets you up to fail and he has a cocky attitude.Avoid
Biochemistry is a difficult concept by nature, and he does his best to make it click with analogies and will go over content from the previous lecture every class. Gives out so much extra credit. Just keep up with the material day by day instead of cramming at the last second and you'll survive. His attitude is fine, just brush it off and move on.
I would recommend taking this class with any other professor. I did not find him approachable. he does not record lectures or post slides before lecture!!! did better on exams reading the textbook. DONT MISS AN EXAM, no matter what, even if there's a death in the family with documentation,he will not let you make it up, making the final worth 50%
Unfortunately if you're a nursing student, it is required. He sets out his standards from the first day: you have to stay on top of the homework, read (ask questions or go to the tutors in STAR center), and PLEASE attend the lectures. There are some things that he says in class that are helpful for the test. Difficult but if you study, passable.
This course needs a serious restructure. The curve is generous, but exams are unfair and barely cover 1/3 of the insane info we're expected to learn. No study guides, resources, and 0 communication from the professor. You're completely on your own all sem. You need to be studying everyday of the semester.Take a diff professor please save your GPA.
I don't know how he still has a position to teach here considering all the negative reviews. Each one is valid and real. Listen to them and avoid this teacher.
ATTEND LECTURES!!! He does not record lectures and the slides he uploads are super bare bones. However, his in-person lectures are in depth and he clearly has a lot of passion for the subject. Exams are hard but he offers extra credit during lectures. Don't let his surface level abrasiveness fool you, he's actually super kind and really funny.
Probably the worst professor I've had thus far. 3 exams and a handful of homework assignments are all that go into the grade book, and he makes his exams almost impossible to do well on. Has an average of 50-60% on each exam and provides no study materials or extra help, and is extremely unhelpful if asked for help. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Biochemistry is one of, if not the, hardest classes I have ever taken Dr. Van Der Geer is incredibly passionate and clear with his expectations for his students. He makes great analogies and reviews previous material before ever class. I never participated in the extra credit and did well in his course. I learned so much from him, highly recommend.
Took him over the summer and had one midterm and one cumulative final. He provides no study guide, no lecture recordings, slides are only posted after the lecture, and they are very sparse. Exams are not given back, some of the homework assignments can not be reviewed. Passionate about the subject but you're pretty much set up to fail.
Passionate about what he talks about but quiet and really just reads through the slides. This class is built to be easy for incoming freshmen so as long as you do what they ask youll get a good enough grade. chemistry is hard but Van der geer was ok.
This professor is over-hated. He has amazing lectures and his exams are tough but very fair. He prepares you well so if you just pay attention and compare notes to the textbook you will do just fine. He can be intimidating and hard to approach but he is very good at what he does and he cares about his students and is there to help.
There's a reason why he is so overhated. He is not a bad person; it's clear he knows what he is doing. But the way he teaches this already difficult subject makes taking the class feel like an absolute chore. The textbook will be your best friend for the rest of the semester. Just keep up with him and follow up with the book is my best advice.
If you are taking this course, prepare to only read the textbook. The lectures are not put together well, and you can tell he didn't practice. He doesn't speak up and talks incoherently. You can tell he is knowledgeable about the subject, but he is not good at teaching it.
struggled a lot in this class. Lectures were difficult to understand, felt like concepts were not explained enough to prepare for tests. When students asked how to improve or what to study, the responses weren't very helpful and sometimes came across as dismissive. There was no test prep or guidance, and many students performed poorly.
Peter Van Der Geer is clearly a very passionate chemist, but a lackluster educator. His lectures lack substance and often consist of him reading off slides that tell you "key concepts" to figure out on your own time. You will likely learn more from office hours with your TA if you put the effort to go to them. He overcomplicates content.
Learned little to nothing from his lectures, I only passed by watching youtube videos honestly. His lectures were not mandatory but he does attendence points through an online website so as long as you log on to do those you dont have to go. The midterm/final exams have soooooo many TA's walking around 24/7 so be know its hard to cheat.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I took him as a pre-req. But his lectures suck, he kind of just reads off the slides. The tests are hard, most of which I studied for were not on the test, he does not give out any kind of study guide besides the exam review. However, the exam review covers only a small portion of what's on the test.
Honestly, not bad. Final was unfair, barely consisted of any new material. 3 tests, the last one being the final (cumulative) + 200 points. Wanted to see if he would count my answer I got right but got marked wrong by his TA, didn't give me the point although he gave another student back a point. Overall, not bad, he's just unfair
Just an average professor. Tests aren't his; they're the chem departments. He's a “read right off the slides and explain” type of guy, so attend lectures. Class is split into 3 midterms and 1 final, all multiple choice. Labs are fairly easy because the course is an intro. Final was unexpectedly chill because it covered mostly early material.
