Easy teacher. Requires two papers, with a midterm and final, but nothing to sweat over
Funny Guy. Certainly appears to know his stuff and very personable. You can B.S. with the man in his office about anything from politics to baseball. Lonely hearted mets fan.
He's a great professor and is very easy and grades very fairly.
he's a funny guy. he knows his stuff and his lectures make u stay awake in class. there's quite a number of papers to write for a history class, but he's a fair grader. just go to his lectures and u'll pass his class. a pretty handsome guy too. =P
There is a decent amount of work butas long as you come to class you'll do great. He is extremely clear, funny, a good grader, and definitly HOT!!!
As long as you are in class every day and take good notes, you can get a good grade. Besides being a great teacher, he's also nice to look at. I give him an A.
great teacher, almost as good as tom munro. he is like hansel too, so hot right now. take notes + go to class = pass
He is a nice guy. He's not the typical hot teacher, but I think he's cute. Oh yea he's a good teacher too.
He's a great professor! His lectures aren't boring and as long as you attend and take good notes you'll do fine. He's pretty funny and really HOT!! You'll actually look foward to attending his class and being that he's so HOT you'll actually pay attention and learn a lot!
You've gotta be kidding me. Anyone who knocks this guy and struggles in his class, doesn't deserve to be in college. A wonderful professor and a great person, Vellon IS there for you if you need to talk to him. Good attendence+1/2 a brain= A
Greatest Professor I ever took. Always avalibale in office hours and is always willing to help. Every other class he shows movie. If you take good notes and do the papers you will get an A. Watch the movie too because their is a question on the midterm and final abot the movie. Also gives good review for tests
The best professor on campus. Vellon is not only incredibly intelligent, he has a great dry sense of humor (think Daria). Anyone who says Vellon is not there for his students has never tried to speak with him. A great professor and a wonderful person. Take his Vietnam calss and especially the colloquium, you will not regret it.
He's a really great professor. I'm not a history fan, but I learned so much in his class. I got a pretty good grade and I totally recommend taking him. There are 2 papers, 2 tests, and some journals. Not bad at all...
sigh.He is hot. no doubt about that. He has that combination of a punkas* sense of humor with a genuine heart of gold. males and females: you will want to go to class. and by doing what you anyway will want to do, you will learn and be perfectly prepped to take his no gimmicks exams. journals are short and fun, 2 papers are simple. Sit back, enjoy:)
took his class because i needed something that fit my schedule. glad i did. he is a great prof. and he is very clear when he lectures. the readings he uses are interesting and his exams are very fair. journal writngs are easy and he gives a lot of time to do them. he has a great sense of humor and can laugh with the class. nice looking too.
im leaving a review just because i want to talk about him. because hes fabulous. because hes funny and smart. and because hes so damn hot.
By far the best Prof in the History Dept and even on campus. He knows his material, is funny and is the type of Prof that cares about his students. Always available in office hours and gives a lot of helpful advice for papers by offering suggestions. Take one of his classes you will NOT be disappointted! And he's cute too!
One of my favorite teachers. Available if you help. Funny in class. He really seems to care.
best teacher for hist. funny, easy going and caring. all he asks is that you do some work and talk once in awhile. I very, very highly recommend.
Who's better than Vellon? Even if you're not a history major or don't need any more history courses, you should still take this guy. Or you know what, go talk to him in his office b/c he's simply the most helpful professor on campus. He should be an advisor or the dean for crying out loud.
BEST PROFESSOR IN QC
There is too much reading material and he adds on as the course progresses but he is an easy grader, unfortunately, I didn't learn much in the class. He does not add any more or new info. to the readings
easily the best professor at Queens. He is helpful and knows his stuff inside out. Very witty and pretty cute 2. Not a crazy workload. Very fair and easy grader. Makes class so much fun. Is open minded. You can say whatever you want as long as you can back it up somehow. SIMPLY THE BEST!!!
Highly recommend taking his classes. He is the best. Very knowledgeable professor. His classes fly by so fast becasue he makes it very interesting.
Absolutely the BEST professor at QC. Anyone who does not agree is nuts. Plenty of reading for Hist Colloquium. Fair and always available to discuss any issues. Witty & great sense of humor. Research paper, hist paper, quizzes based on assigned readings, and participation is key. Definitely HOT!
One of the most enjoyable classes I had at QC. He is never boring, very funny, intelligent and totally hot!Has a great rapport with students, approachable and helpful, midterm, final are essay format..easy if you study, two 5 page papers somewhat difficult. Also some journal papers 3-4, just your opinion on topics. I wish he taught more classes!!
You may or may not learn much from Vellon, but he's one of the most understanding professors in QC. His assignments and expectations are clear. For history majors, this class is a joyous breeze of ease.
Prof. Vellon is really nice but his class is kinda difficult. You need to attend most of the classes b/c his exams are essay format and you really need to write a lot of information. Midterm, final, 2 papers that are 4-6 pages (not easy at all!!!) and journals about once or twice a month. Pretty difficult class, not an easy A at all.
Yes, ladies, he's good-looking. But more importantly, he's a really kind-hearted professor who always asks the class how they're feeling and respects their (reasoned) opinions. All-around a wonderful human being and a wonderful professor.
yes he is a kind-hearted, enjoyable prof. BUT I did not like him because he is very unorganized, do not know how to teach, and always jokes around. I do recommend him if you dont want to work and have fun. If you are looking to learn 'History', do not take him.
Very kind hearted, jokes a lot in class. take home midterm paper and a research paper and gives some thought essays. Just listen to him in class and take good notes, you'll be fine. Prepare yourself for lots of writing though!
A GREAT TEACHER. He is serious at times, but he loves to have fun in class. He likes to joke around and make everyone more relaxed. He knows his stuff and still makes the class fun. There is some writing you have to do but not anything u wouldnt expect from a W course. And he actually makes good jokes, not like some other corny professors. :D
Prof. Vellon's Vietnam War class was really laid back and fun. He tends to be very sarcastic and jokes around alot. He encourages alot of debates and discussions. Take home midterm, quiz every class based on the readings and a 7-10 pg final paper. He is really easy, just do the readings and you'll be fine.
professor is hard if you don't like to write. if you can't write do not take this professor. he requires alot of writing.
Wonderful professor! I do not have any interest in history and he found a way to make the subject entertaining and hold my attention. He has a wonderful sense of humor and conducts the class beautifully!
Prof. Vellon the best Hist professor in QC. Work load is fair, and he speaks very well. The material was interesting and he made the class enjoyable. He is very charasmatic and easy to approach for help. I must admit that he is definitely very easy on the eyes. Will definitely take him again!
He is a good teacher. He is clear, helpful, and keeps the class interested in the material
The best professor I've ever had. So what you have to write a few papers they're so easy! Tests were a breeze. US and the Vietnam War still my favorite class ever taken at Queens. Funny, smart, cool. Perfect.
He is very unclear in his assignments and is very nonchalant about it and then grades you unfairly
History of Italian Immigrants in the U.S. with Dr. Vellon was amazing. He is intelligent, clear and funny. Dr. Vellon is a fine example of the caliber that can come out of the CUNY Graduate Center. Take him!
Great professor! Fantastic lectures and great personality. Has a great sense of humor and is very knowledgeable. I greatly respect him as a professor. Papers (because it's a writing intensive course) were numerous but clearly instructed and fairly graded. Attend the class, pay attention, and you'll go far. Take him! You'll love it.
I'm not even trying to be a d*ck, but if you don't do well in his course it speaks volumes about you as a student. You need to really take a good look at yourself and figure out what you're doing wrong, because he grades great work with a great great, and poor work with a poor grade. Learn how to write a paper, you're in college.
Prof vellon is adorable, kind and knows his material. He is brilliant, has interesting class discussions and is a wonderful teacher. He prefers discussions and wants to hear our responses to readings, so if you read the books/articles and participate you should be fine. Great teacher, great course!!!!!
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!!! VERY clear, VERY helpful!! makes class interesting. I'm not a fan of history, personally it's boring but Prof. Vellon made it interesting.
All the positive comments are true! Take him if you can! He's not only a great professor who unlike many other professors is open to student's opinions and likes hearing POV but he's also hilarious and down to earth. There's only an essay, research paper, written midterm and final.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! He makes history the most fun subject ever and hes hilarious. Hes also very good looking. 2 essay format test, a book review and a research paper. it may seem like a lot but he helps you a lot.
One of the funniest professors I've ever had. I was i tears at one point. As for the workload, it's honestly a breeze if you know basic writing. Reviews before tests, gives you a long time for the papers. Easily the best history professor at QC.
Professor was awesome. Lots of reading assignments. By far one of the better professors for 392W.
hes very laid back, he knows his stuff though! The work load is okay 1 book review and a final paper DO NOT SAVE TILL THE END. Papers seem really easy when explained but when u start its actually difficult. You really need to study for midterm & final but just remember key events IN ORDER and youll be good. I got an A!
I only took him for summer classes. Yes he is very good looking with an incredible sense of humor and very smart. What actually impressed me the most is that even though he jokes around he does take his work seriously. In order to get good grade from him you as a student have to show the same amount of effort that he puts in teaching the class.
To keep it short and simple, professor Vellon is amazing. He's a jokester but takes his work very seriously. One paper comparing two books, a 10 page research paper, and of course a midterm and final. Occasional documentaries. Despite the workload, which really isn't much, the class is relatively easy. Highly recommended.
DR. Vellon is a GREAT professor he brought the vietnam way to life in his History 299 class. Any combat veteran should here the knowledge he has on America's wars. I give him a A+
Best Professor. Down to earth, funny, and also knows what he's talking about. Highly recommend taking his classes.
great professor. if you pay attention in the class its a guaranteed good grade. he is also very nice and relaxed in class which keeps the class entertaining. if you can take him i highly recommend it.
Best History professor you are going to get. He cares about his students, and their interest. Also he is really engaging and enjoys comments and questions. Please be on time to his class though. He strongly prefers you to be on time. The class is for anyone who enjoys History and wants a professor that will engage them.
Attendance is technically mandatory but he rarely passes out the attendance sheet. Cracks a couple of joke in class Tells students to purchase the text book but most people don't even bother buying
Peter Vellon is a fun professor. It is clear that he loves to teach, and he thoroughly knows this subject. Class is lots of fun, very enjoyable. Not only that, but you will actually learn. This is a class you should take. You will see why this class enrollment closes out early..
This is my third time taking Professor Vellon and for good reason. He's very witty and highly accessible outside of class. He's also very understanding and wants you to succeed. Make sure to be specific in your research paper without going off on a tangent. He's definitely the top five best history professor in the department.
Professor Vellon is an awesome teacher. The work load is not as hard as it seems although you had to read every single night because he would give a quiz on the content of the book he makes you read. Its a decent amount tho, not to exaggerated. He is very laid back, and cracks funny and he is very understand. You guys should take him.
Dr. vellon is the man. At first I thought he was too flippant for my taste, but he's just being himself, and it helps the flow of conversation. Heavy on participation but is an excellent moderator. If you were to participate 1-2 times a class you'd get full credit (20%). He assigns some REALLY good material too. Let's you choose ur research.
Vellon's a funny guy and that definitely comes off in his lectures. He keeps things light, but very informative. Quizzes every week on the reading, midterm and final is are essays. 10 page research paper due at the end of the semester. Put in the work and you will do well
He said in the beginning of the semester if you take 10 of 11 quizzes he'll drop the lowest grade but at the end of the semester he changed his policy and said that's only for students who took all 11 quizzes. I ended up not studying as hard for the 10th and 11th quiz because of that. I would've gotten A- instead of B+ if he would've kept his word.
he the best
Professor Vellon makes it seem like he is laid back, and says he does not care about attendance. However missing his weekly quizzes will definitely bring down your grades and he is not accommodating about makeups. His tests are hard, and there is a ton of reading. Interesting to listen to, but way too difficult for a history 104 class.
How do you improve on perfection? I thought Prof. Peter Vellon was wonderful when I took his Hist-299, the Vietnam War and America, but he is even more fantastic in the small seminar setting of a Colloquium. Every class was a pleasure to attend. Students required to do a presentation on a topic of the sylabus, which turned out to be fun..
RUN. NOT a good teacher. harsh grader. would NOT take again, and would NOT recommend. Annoying.
horrible
Horrible. He is the most unprofessional professor that I have ever had. Does not cover the material that is brought on the test. He is misleading about the quizzes, he says its multiple choice but gives open ended responses and asks very specific questions based on the readings that has nothing to do with the main topic of the chapter.
Professor Vellon is hard to relate to at first, but then you get his style and learn a lot from him. He uses a lot of humor. There are a lot of readings and a quiz each week.
The class is made up of forty plus students. It's hard to participate when you're shy. I participate very well in my other classes, but this class scares me. Maybe because it was mostly males. He wants in-depth essays. There's a lot of readings. you'll be reading three books at one and write an essay on two other totally different books
I've written 3 reviews that've been deleted, which makes me suspect that he obsessively patrols this page getting negative reviews taken down. Anyways, insipid and inadequate. I get that this is a survey class, but I've had survey courses that aren't just textbook readings before. Replace him with a postgrad, and pay them the rate he's getting.
Prof. Vellon did not give all the quizzes promised. Clear syllabyus. Towards the middle when the guidelines for the optional paper were given, I did the optional paper but Vellon was unclear that we would not be given any compensation for our work. He explained it to be hypothetical after the "grades" were given. I would recommend, be mindful.
Vellon is super engaging. Some reviews say he is disrespectful at times but I disagree he just has a funny sense of humor. He makes the topics super simple and gives quizzes every week. but I have passed every single one with B or higher. Also understanding on deadlines and willing to go over assignments.
He is awesome professor. As long as you show up in class, do your work and come to exams prepared, you will be fine. I took history 104 in spring. The way this professor teaches his subject, it makes you want to learn and be more curious about history. He knows his subject very well.
Dr. Vellon was the only good professor that I ever had at CUNY Queens College. He was very loose and fair. He was flexible when it came to grading assignments. He was also open to differing interpretations than that of his own. I wish the rest of the History Department was like him!
He's easily the funniest professor I've had so far in college. Always jokes around with the class to keep us paying attention to what he's saying and assigns textbook readings before each class. All quizzes given are open book, though he is a tough grader when it comes with dbe's. Just stay on top of most of your readings and come to class.
He's probably the funniest professor I've had at QC, and the tight-knit colloquium class gives you a front row seat to the comedy show. If you put in the work and talk to him you'll do well. The amount of reading is a little excessive but you only have to get a general idea of it to do well on the reading response. Good teacher and enjoyable class.
in hindsight, he was a really cool professor and the only thing i hated about the class was the time. the assignments were never too difficult. I don't usually participate, but i felt comfortable enough to speak in this class (hallelujah), so i would recommend this professor.
This was like a 70 person class and halfway through we had to go online because of Covid, but Prof Vellon took very well. He's prepared, knows his stuff, and is quite funny too. Do yourself a favor and participate. It will make him remember you. There are weekly open-book quizzes, two papers, nothing too hard if you already know US history somewhat
Vellon is a solid choice for history. Hes very approachable and open to our complicated history in the US. He keeps his atmosphere calm and open to ideas and debates. His group projects are simple and he offers feedback, you have to do two of those. His final and midterm are basic just read the textbook and take notes from presentations!
Consider yourself BLESSED if you have this professor! He is very caring, flexible, engaging in lectures and funny! Open book quizzes every week based on textbook readings. 2 papers, midterm & final exam. Before and after COVID-19 he was amazing. He really understands the struggle of being a student and will help you as much as he can. God bless!!!!
Really nice guy. I believe 12 quizzes but we were only graded on 10. Sometimes he even allowed us to not take any quiz for the week. Lectures were good, funny guy.
Taking Prof Vellon online is probably the best decision Ive ever made. He makes time fly while learning and is super funny. 10/10 would take again
He's a good person, but he's not that great of a professor. Super harsh grader for essays like hello this is a history class not english. Quizzes are easy tho
This professor is beyond amazing! He truly understands his students and always makes the class fun. He expects you to read the textbook but honestly he covers the same material in class. The weekly quizzes are annoying but he occasionally cancels quizzes if they're at inconvenient timing such as the holidays.
This was by far my favorite professor at Queens so far. He has a great personality which motivates you to come to class, and he is very relatable. The workload is not heavy or difficult as long as you study and/or pay attention in class. There's one short 10 question quiz every week, two document based essays, a midterm and a final.
Decent guy. Took two of his classes. He's fair but you have to stay on top of your work. I was content with a B in his class.
Had him in spring, and he made this class really easy and enjoyable. It was a W class but it wasnt stressful and helped to refresh my mind on what US history was about. I didnt really have a huge bond with him like many other students but he was cool, and funny. On occasion sarcastic, but in a good way! Highly intelligent man, would recommend.
Honestly, this was one of the best professors I have taken this year. Not only is he so lenient with work but he is so understanding. The midterm and final were easy As, attendance wasnt mandated, and youre required to do just 10 discussion points throughout the semester. Hes also so lively and easygoing
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Weekly quizzes, must complete only 10 discussions, a DBE essay, Midterm & Final. SUPER EASY! If you follow directions and complete the work given, you will pass, 100%. He is also very, very understanding and caters to students. A MUST TAKE PROF!
Professor was very fun. He assigned us 5 quizzes but canceled some, so we really only had 3. One DBE and biweekly blackboard posts. Class was not very difficult. Everything he goes over in the lectures will appear on the quizzes and exams. If you pay attention, it's an easy A. The professor made online school interesting.
Professor Vellon is amazing. Dropped the second essay and let us redo the first essay for a better grade. 12 quizzes and 10 discussion boards over the course of the semester. Midterm and final all mc. Take him you won't regret it.
Professor Vellon is cool, he makes a lot of jokes during lessons. The class is easy, however I don't like his way of grading. Some people were accused of plagiarism on their DBE, even though the only sources copied were quotes from the document. I think he has a student helper grade everything
Professor Vellon gives interesting lectures. He is also clearly very personable and has a jovial attitude in the class. He is passionate and knowledgeable about history. The workload is completely manageable. There's no reason to not take this class!
I only failed because I was slacking due to my mental health att. But I remember him being a great professor and that everyone really loved him. I didn't do the last essay or final, idr, and for MONTHS after the semester was over, he still had my grade as an "INC", leaving me an opportunity to still finish it. I never did, but I'm grateful! XD
Vellon was interesting. He wasn't horrible but he also wasn't amazing. He gave his weekly DBs and quizzes (which were online). The only exam we had was the final. The DBE was light, just took a lot of energy to read all nine docs. My only recommendation is don't expect him to answer your emails in a timely fashion. I would take his class again tho!
He is very caring, nothing was too difficult. He gave us 26 DB and we only had to do 10, same with the quizzes 12 only did 10. The essay is a big part of the grade but he gave a lot of good feedback. Take his class and you will get to learn a lot!!
Had him for 163H. Awesome prof, funny guy, discussion based class. Will fight you if you don't agree with him but respectful of your views at the end of the day. 3 essays + final. Lenient grader. Pretty chill class. 10/10 would recommend. Don't need the textbook. Find a free pdf online.
A lot of writing but he is an easy grader. If he sees that you put effort in he will give you a good grade. He assigned a lot of work but if you have a problem he will listen and help you. My class had a lot of trouble doing one project and so he changed it so it would be easier for us. He assigned A LOT of readings and participation is important.
Genuinely listens to the class and is a pretty funny and chill guy. He's lenient and nice and the coursework is alright [3 reading reflections, 2 essays, 1 final project, 1 discussion leader ppt], class can get boring with the material and it's a long stretch of time but you'll get through it
NEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW YYYYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRK This professor is funny, chill, and makes history for us because he really is one of us: a real one from the New York working class.
It's a discussion class + you have to write a lot of essays. I think I wrote 8-ish essays for this class (it's a W credit). His grading is very lenient, however, so you won't struggle. He's funny, too.
Professor Vellon is a very knowledgeable and understanding professor. You could tell he really cared about his students and their academic journeys. He's also a bit of a character.
