great guy, awesome webnotes, willing to help you out
Keeps your attention during lecture pretty well
the web notes were really helpful
great guy, very good lectures. what is up with the first two midterms for 113 this year tho? impossible...

Very friendly, funny and helpful. The best webnotes ever (but you have to attend the lecture to understand it). Easy midterms = hard final! Don't ignore those last lecture bits he skims over at the end.
Excellent professor, explains chemistry really well. He is also awesome in the labs too. Hopefully you haven't taken chem12 or else you can't take his course.

HE RULES!!!!!
Best professor I've ever had
He maked the class interesting with his humor, stories, and special appearances by another chem prof to do cool experiments in the class. The material was pretty easy and the notes were really helpful - only if you went to class.
Fabulous prof, one of the best I've ever had..explains everything clearly while remaining interesting and entertaining. Labs are easy as well, just make sure you go to class.
always prepared for the lectures and makes class worth attending
realy good notes, makes chem fun
He's a great prof! I hated chem in highschool and now it's one of my best courses! He's awesome!
very cool prof. He's funny yet not silly. I loved his lecture notes. He told us exactly what we needed to know so we didn't have to study garbage. Labs were easy! Pretty hot for his age.
Dr. Wassell replies to all his emails! hes quick on them too.. gets back to you the next day. i didnt take chem 12 in highschool cuz chem 11 was shietty. I was reluctant to take it in university.. but this is the only course im doing good in.
P Was is the man!
I wish he would teach higher level chemistry courses, specially Organic chem 233.
If you go to class AND do the homework you're set. P. Wassel is a solid, FAIR, and interesting prof. Relly good.
Dr. Wassell is the best University Professor I ever had. He speaks articulently, he answers questions, he makes class interesting. If he taught all the chemistry courses I'd major in it. He makes Chem less intimidating. He's awsome.
Dr.Wassell is the best prof ever! If you didn't take chem 12, that was the best choice you ever made in your life.
Awesome prof; has a sense of humour; actually CARES about his students; very helpful & responsive. I'm lazy and I hated chem in HS, yet Chem 111 and 113 were 2 of my best courses this year! So glad I didn't take Chem 12! Overall he's an excellent prof!
I think Dr. Wassel is my favorite professor because he's not only funny at times, but he makes chem easy and understandable with his powerpoints and notes.
P made someone who hated chemistry consider majoring in it...absolutely awesome teacher...
An amazing prof! Definately, makes the subject more interesting by creating a positive environment, where questions are encouraged and clarity is projected. Overall, this is the class to take.
Dr. Wassell is the best prof ever!!! I consider myself so lucky for not taking chem 12. =)
super helpful, clear, sweet guy, always fair, teaches the labs as well which is nice. answer questions, and makes time in class for going over hw Q's. GREAT prof. Thanks, P!
Awesome professor...print out his powerpoint notes befroehand..makes it easier to follow, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK! He WANTS you to pass.
he's the most interesting professor i've seen.the exams are very similar to the practice tests that he gives , so if u do them u'll get quiet a high mark
Sooooo easy :D do his practise midterms--theyre almost EXACTLY identical, only with different numbers. he's got the best sense of humor too--my most interesting class so far
Barely a step above high school. Lectures are not necessary provided you read the powerpoint in your own time. Labs are easy. Easy A
excellent prof!
i'm taking him again next term =) that must mean he's pretty good =)
He is like the best prof I ever had, certainly made the first year fun and easy.. I wish I can take his classes again~~
Great Prof. I'm an arts student and I managed to do well with no background in chemistry. If you're stressed about taking chem, don't be this class is great
I don't know whether it is a product of excellent teaching, or if I am just very skilled in chemistry, but I found this course very, very easy. He taught well enough that I tutored my friends in Chem 121/123. He is usually very patient and receptive to questions, and explains things with clarity.
this class was very interesting, i enjoyed the class, and prof. wasswll was very engaging and nice to the students. he always was willing to help. the labs were also all very well done and interesting.
Good Prof. Actually gives a sh** about teaching the students. Makes material understandable and interesting (assuming you like Chem).
Excellent teacher, really cares about students. Makes it difficult to fail, and tries to make it interesting.
great prof. he has really good notes and is fair to his students.
VERY GOOD PROF.
I can't believe all the positive ratings! This man is disorganized, his lectures are unclear, he does not explain concepts, and his frequent comments like, "this is basic stuff, if you don't get this, you're really in trouble" do nothing to foster student success. I should have just taken this at Langara.

this guy is a great guy and a funny teacher. he really does go through things in class fairly thourly. But the only problem is that if you don't get the concepts quickly you wont understand him. He makes alot of mistakes on his slides and when he notices them just kinda assumes everyone else isn't messed up by them. Great proff otherwise
Truly was a great proff, took the extra time to explain the right things. Good average in the class and very fair tests, hopefully the finals the same......
He takes time to explain each concept and is very open to questions from the students. Very easy midterms and takes time to go through problem sets in class. Good Prof, enjoyable class.
Easy midterms, good labs, clear notes. Do really well on the miterms and lab cause you will see stuff on the final you have never seen before. Fair? Probably not...
Best prof! Loved him! He made me continue to take Chem in the second term! Clearest notes ever seen! Save you time and money while learned a lot! Strongly recommended!
Not a bad prof, and a far as first year science classes go, it was pretty easy. Easy to talk to, and doesn't really try to trick the students who've put in the time.
OK class but I must admit Dr. Wassell is getting grumpy and impatient in his old age. As far as UBC profs go though, he is pretty good.
He seemed to be getting grumpy towards to end of the year, and the final was pretty though.
Great Prof. Especially if you think you know nothing about chemistry he is very helpful.
Peter is a very straightforward prof who always has understandable midterms/exams. all his online notes are very clear and he is very approachable. I definatly was not looking forward to this course, but i now want to be a chem major!!
The most understanding prof I've ever had. I missed a lab because I was sick, and he just gave me the data to do the lab write-up. Didn't give me sh*t for not emailing him about it. His sense of humour keeps the class very interesting. Great online notes! He provides you with a printer in the chem lab to print his notes for free. BEST PROF IN UBC!!
AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
a very good professor.
Fabulous teacher! he was very clear and the tests weren't too hard. Labs were simple. Kind of intimidating but very very nice and helpful if you approach him! take his class!
The best prof I had so far! Every single class my friend and I would praise him in various ways, " He is so cute" " He's so good at explaining, breaks everything down to the core!" " He's so funny" " I wish I could marry him"
An excellent teacher. If you attend lectures and work the practise mid-terms and finals you will do well. The take home work is reasonable. Wassel has a great sense of humour. The only reason why he doesn't have a great hotness rating is because everyone in the class is 17-18 years old.
I cannot sing enough praises about this wonderful man.
AWESOME! He is one of the best teachers I've had in University so far. Great sense of humor and easy going.
I actually enjoy his lectures because if you attend and even pay attention somewhat, you WILL understand it. he is soo helpful if you need him before, after, or during labs. he's the most adorable thing ever, and its not impossible to get an A in his course! Take the class but dont buy the textbook, his notes explain everything.
Hands down the best prof at UBC. I wish he would teach all the chem courses..I'll definitely miss his class.
He's a pretty easy Prof. He's fair with his marks. One of my best courses I have with him.
I loved Dr. Wassell! He actually cares about you understanding the material and receiving a decent grade. He's funny in lectures and labs and totally cool about appointments. Up there with the best prof's I had this term!
Great Prof! Highly Recommended!
Sure he's a nice guy. I can't hate him but he seems to get all mucked up when he speaks, which I do not like. Sense of humour is amusing, sometimes. xD Overall I wish he challenged the class to think more.
I took both 111 and 113 with him (inevitably). He reminds me of a british gentleman! His notes are quite clear, his exams are quite easy. The materials are not challenging enough, however, which gets me concerned about next year. Fair in grading, apparently looks over each student's grade and tweaks them according to their overall performance.
Dr. Wassell is an amazing teacher. His notes are very clear, and if you study from them and understand what they are talking about you will get at least an 80% in his class. He is always available for help outside of class, and his labs actually have something to do with what he is teaching in class. I would 100% recommend his class.
I liked him while he was talking about his life but otherwise it was utterly boring...
This guy is so funny...and midterms are super easy..final is a little bit harder but still very fair.
looks unapproachable but is really kind. midterms are super easy, final is a bit harder but still fair...
EASIEST EFFING CLASS EVER!!
simply put, HE WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED.
A great Prof. Really really easy class. Doesn't joke around too often but when he tries to be funny he's absolutely halrious! Chem 111 was great thanks to Dr. Wassell :D
Our prof has British accent... So it's a bit hard to understand...
His lectures were sometimes boring but he is such a great guy! However, I need to refer to the textbook quite often because he doesn't explain everything.. otherwise, great class
Not helpful, few examples in class. Learned majority of course online.
Professor Wassell makes absolutely no sense in his lectures whatsoever. I have no idea who is commenting saying he's great. I learned everything I needed online and could not once access him during office hours or in lectures. If he didn't have tenure he would be fired because of the low ratings he gets on class feedback. Even the TAs hate him.
He is a great guy who knows what he is talking about but during the lectures, he just reads from the lecture slides and moves threw them very quickly because they are online. A little too monotonous for my taste but good person.
IF YOU EVER HAVE TO TAKE CHEM 111/113 DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO NOT GET WASSELL! you might as well be doing a self directed study. he reads off his slides but forgets what he's talking about, doesnt give a rats ass about his students; not only wasting your time but puting you even farther behind other first year students. Shouldn't be working atubc!
I am sad to say you have no choice but him for this lecture! His TAs are amazing but his lectures are terrible, were agonizing for me to sit through. I have mild ADHD and couldn't bear his monotone and sole reading of the slides. good person but if he didn't have tenure, be outta here! I couldn't make it bcoz of this and agony of listening.
Funny guy, the autobiography he gave of himself on the first day made me seriously giggle. In fact, I think I spent a great deal of that course giggling (when I did show up) although I'm not sure he was always being funny on purpose. I suspect he's a bit confused.
Funny guy, not necessarily always on purpose. I suspect he's a bit confused. Nice guy though, and easy enough course (just don't do what I did and get frustrated and stop attending/studying)
He's a nice funny guys, just wayyyyy tooooooo monotonous I fall asleep in his class so often and the reading off the lecture slides the countless numbers and units is just so tedious and hard to follow if you are already falling asleep from listening to chemistry.... Anyways, nice person though.
If you are reading this for the first time, sorry to break it to you but you're stuck with him, and, even worse, he just doesn't cut it. The only way I earned that B was by gluing myself to the text and Vista slides and figuring it out on my OWN. He's just too monotonous. I'd say avoid him but for all I know, you won't be able to, sorry.
Get a tutor you for this if you have no Chem background like me. He doesn't give any practise in the things he expects you to do in mid-terms, such as drawing diagrams. However his tests and final are identical to the practise ones he provides, so base your studies off of that. Labs are straightforward. Lectures were understandable, but I got lost.
