He's alright, study from his practice tests, and go to office hours
It was his first time teaching a class; he is a researcher not a professor. That being said, his lectures were sometimes unnecessary to attend. Just read the book, go to section, know the homework and practice exams and do your best on exams.
Peter has gotten a lot better since last year, I had him this fall and he improved a lot this quarter, especially with working out problems in class. His lecture slides are online and downloadable and should probably be looked over before coming to class. The first midterms and final was manageable, although he might try and trick you so be careful
The class started off a little weak but Weiss progressed to become a interesting and passionate professor. He explained all the work thoroughly and most importantly, he applied what was taught to situations and examples in the real world. Attend all lectures, finish and understand all the homework, practice exams, and you'll do well in the class
Peter started off pretty awful, but improved drastically through the quarter and was a very good teacher by the end. The material is generally pretty easy, don't read the book just make sure you understand the homework problems and the lecture problems and you'll do fine.
Weiss is such an amazing professor. He really improved through out the course. Go to his office hours & get to know hi. He is very conceptional so half the test is all concepts so make sure to pay attention. Good luck
The midterms and final have multiple choice questions and free response. He does practice problems in class to help with Webassign hw. Read the book, do lots of practice problems and you should be fine! He's a good teacher :D I recommend taking his class
He is a very nice professor, but there probably won't be a curve. To do well in the class, make sure to get a copy of last years midterms and finals. He reuses the same questions... but just changes the order of the multiple choice answers. If you don't use it, you will be at a disadvantage from all the other students whom already know this.
He really cares about his students. Very good teacher!
Peter was a good lecturer, the homework was tedious, the tests were fair and very closely related to his lectures. If you have questions he's pretty easy to talk to and helpful.
Peter is awesome! Definitely take this class with him if you can. There was not really a curve but his exams are very straightforward. He reuses questions from past exams and practice problems. Just go to class and section and you should do well.
I managed to earn an A on the first midterm, an A on the second midterm, 101.7% on the hw and ended up with a C+ in the class. How? God only knows. The final was all multiple choice b/c no graders were available and the average was very low. However, Peter curves the extremely low grades and disregards the high grades. Not fair, he's getting tough!
Started out not really liking him because power-points go really fast, but I guess you get used to it. Curves well when needed and tests aren't too hard as long as you do his practice exams. Does occasional hw problem examples in class. Helpful during his office hours. Pretty okay professor and a cool guy. Don't regret taking him for 1C.
Weiss isn't the best lecturer, but if you study his practice tests and have an okay understanding of the material, you're guaranteed a B or better.
He is a fair tester. His tests really are doable and a lot of the questions are recycled from previous midterms. If you have the material down, don't even sweat the tests. They are very straightforward. He also likes to sing and play the guitar.
thanks, dr. pete. what a standout guy. super charismatic. sings and plays the guitar really well, too. excellent teacher. gives a crap about his students.
Great professor, super fair. First 2 chapters are pretty challenging, but the last 4 are very simple. He recycles lots of questions so make sure you do his practice exams, and extra problems as well as review his top hat questions (wish I had done this, would have gotten a higher B maybe even an A :)
Weiss was very clear about what was going to be on the tests. It was based off of the homework and practice midterms. If you understand those, you will do well on the tests.
Be sure to memorize everything in the notes, even if it is only discussed briefly.
tests straightforward, but include ALL your work and units on exams, his TAs are typically difficult on grading because he wants ALL the work, homeworks super easy its just webassign
Very charming and nice man who really seems to care about his students. Lectures are straightforward: he never makes the material more difficult than it needs to be. Spends a lot of class time giving detailed explanations of how to do the homework, which can be nice but also tedious sometimes since the work's really easy to begin with.
Peter is a great teacher. Super excited about science is studies Mercury affects on the environment and loves sharing research and things with students. He puts all of his slides online but it's nice to go to class to see him work out solutions. He's so sweet and gave us donut holes and sang with his guitar on the last day of class.
He's my absolute favorite! His midterms are super easy (got an A on both), just do the practice exams and you should be set! But the final exam was such a mess. It's all multiple choice and considerably more difficult than the midterms or the practice material he had up on his website. I ended up getting a D on it, and I was actually prepared!
Don't skip class even though the powerpoint is online. His lecture style is very entertaining, and he often brings in demos that relate to the content. To do well in the class, do the practice tests that he provides! They are very similar to the actual tests. Overall, he's a great professor and makes chem enjoyable for his students.
Peter is a very friendly and humorous professor. He sometimes does experiments in class which makes the lectures a little bit more interesting. Tests do look similar to the practice exams he posted, but expect curve balls. It is not an easy class like people say. Study hard if you want an A.
Weiss is probably one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. He really cares about every student succeeding and provides a LOT of resources for them. However, he's a very hard tester. No note sheets allowed, and any small mistake on a test will get you marked down. I did worse in this class than 1A and 1B, despite it actually being easier.
He'll spend a lot of time working out math problems, since that's what the majority of chem 1C is (it's the only class he teaches). He cares a lot about teaching, and isn't just here to do research. He's hard, but not unreasonable. Focus on the equations and study.
Pete is a very lovable, pure man. He is in a band that creates children's songs about saving the environment (he played his guitar for class on Earth Day). As a teacher, however, I can't say he is my favorite. He isn't atrocious, but he isn't the greatest either. You will really have to study outside of class to understand the material.
This is my second time taking Weiss's class. Failed it the first time bc I overloaded myself Spring quarter with pure STEM classes. SO first off, don't expect it to be easy. Actually put some time and effort, go over the midterm and final practices and review them to know what you're up against. Don't procrastinate and you'll be fine.
Class is by no means easy, but you can definitely get an A if you put in the work. Weiss is approachable and helpful. Lots of respect for him.
Peter is a really great Chem professor. He was really good about explaining the concepts and went over all the examples that showed up on HW. His HW is a lot harder than his tests. He also gives practice problems that are harder than his exams. How well you do on the posted practice exams will tell you what you will get on the exam.
Explains chem well. He's got good lectures, though the tests were a bit hard.
Weiss can explain things fairly well, if you have questions he'll stop lecturing to answer. He is very considerate and his practice tests are very similar to his actual tests.
Professor Weiss is a gem of a professor. He is kind, extremely patient and condenses difficult material to make it simple for students. His tests are very fair. Review the Tophat questions and work through ALL his practice material and problems. The first unit is pretty challenging, but the class gets easier. Tests are free response and MC.
Weiss is a wonderful professor. I'm not much of a Chem person but he really made the class enjoyable. He also brings his guitar to class and will sing to us. 10/10 would recommend!
Was great at teaching the material, but when it came to tests it felt like he rushed teaching us the material and still expected us to be able to master the midterms, and finals-- which was especially hard. If you attend MSI, and go to section you'll prob do fine. He doesn't really curve the overall grade, but does curve midterms (sometimes)...
He tends to rush through the topics without being clear and his test are a bit hard. All together though, not an easy class but not a super hard class for college.
Lectures weren't mandatory and notes were posted online, along with a webcast. Homework was due every 2 weeks. He gave lots of practice quizzes/midterms/finals to prepare us for him. Study lots and go to your TAs.
Peter has been the greatest lecturer I have had so far. He is always enthusiastic and makes you work to get a good grade but it is worth it
This class wasn't too hard, except my grade plummeted from an A to a B- after the final. The midterms and quizzes I got As on all of them, but you really need to study for the final. Peter is a great teacher, and cracks a good amount of jokes. He also plays in a band, and played a song for us on the last day it was great!
Absolutely phenomenal. He's a great teacher for a difficult subject. He's a super nice guy and he's happy to help if you don't understand a concept.
Nice guy and tries his best; but, lectures were pretty disorganized when I took the class which can make it hard to understand sometimes.
Weiss goes very fast through material and his notes are hard to understand. I had Randa Rowland for chem 1A and I prefer her way of teaching much more than Weiss. However, this is a hard class so you do have to pay attention and work hard. Weiss teaches you what you need to know and you have to be prepared to work for a good grade, it can be done!
Pretty funny and likeable teacher overall, material is kinda hard so you gotta put in the work outside of class to. He has a couple in-class quizzes on top of midterms and final, so don't fall behind.
Weiss was a very fair professor. He puts a ton of practice problems online which really helps prepare you for exams and quizzes. He does go very fast in lecture so you do have to keep up outside of class. As long as you put in the extra work you'll do fine.
Peter was a really nice person and good teacher. I personally didn't like his slides and the pace that he went through them. Classes were kinda bland except when he brought in experiments. That being said, he is super helpful in office hours and his tests are super extremely fair. He posts questions and basically tells you what will be on exams!
After taking a previous Chem class with an awful professor, Weiss is a breath of fresh air. His lectures are fairly slow and not too exciting, but his syllabus is very well outlined and if you choose to not go to class, it is easy to know what the class has been doing.
Peter is great lecturer. It shows that he is interested in helping his students succeed in the class. The midterms are very similar to the practice midterms, so as long as those are done, then you should be fine. He even provides practice quizzes, and drops the lowest quiz score. The homework can be tough though. He also gives extra credit!
Peter is very clear about due dates with homework so you're never caught off guard by assignments. He is also very clear about what will be on tests. His practice tests look extremely similar to his real tests. His lectures are always webcasted so it's not an issue if you miss a lecture. He's very funny and genuinely cares about his students.
Peter is such a nice guy! His slides weren't the best and sometimes he would rush things (I mean it's a 10 week course for a big part of chem so). However, he would bring experiments and sang to us a couple times so it was a nice treat. Tests were fair and HW wasn't bad. He's such a sweet, humble guy and his character makes up for any downsides.
hw 20%, quiz 15% (3, 1 drop), mid 25%, fin 35%, clicker 4%, ec 1%, ws 1%. Tests were mc, good if you do hw (write it out) and watch lectures for review. Incredibly clear lecturer, very approachable. Quizzes are harder than tests and on webassign, prepare for them. Midterm was 20q, final was 40q. Do all practice quiz and tests, will be ok. GL!!
He was okay. I am a visual learner and had a hard time in his class. If you memorize some equations and know a few conceptual things you'll be fine. He leaves hard material for the last week before a test, so watch out.
Weiss was a good Chemistry professor. He taught the class well and actually had a very fair and curved grading scale. He moves a little fast, but that's to be expected in a 10-week chem course. There is a lot of homework and I would definitely study, but overall, he's a solid and fair choice for General Chemistry and I'm glad he was my professor.
Peter is an amazing professor with an obvious passion for the subject. I had the pleasure of taking peter for chem 1A and chem 1C and enjoyed both classes while getting a lot out of them. His homework assignments always had very specific deadlines and his practice quizzes almost directly mirrored his in class quizzes
Peter is a real one. Cares about subject and his students. Tries his best for you to understand if you ask him. Accommodating and respectful. Overall great experience. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are clicker questions after every class. Class isn't too tough, but you do have to put in some effort. Definitely take his class if you can.
Professor Weiss is an amazing professor. He truly cares about his students. I think that he was one of the only professors that did everything possible to provide a great learning experience for his students during the whole online classes thing. If you are thinking about taking one of his classes, definitely take his class.
Professor Weiss has been one of the most caring professors I've encountered at UCSC. He is genuine about his concern for his students outside of academia and of course, within as well. During this pandemic, many students have been affected by all the events transpiring but he has been extremely accommodating! Would definitely take again, 10/10!
Peter Weiss is by far one of the best professors I've had since I've been at UCSC. It's pretty disappointing that my only class with him had to be remote but he handled it so well and genuinely listened to the students and did what he could to accommodate us. I would highly recommend taking a class taught by him. Such a wonderful professor!
Weiss is an amazing chemistry teacher. He is very clear in class and gives tons of examples!!! If you review the old tests/files that are on Canvas, do the clicker questions, and complete the homework, you're pretty much all set. This class is pretty straightforward!
Peter Weiss is an amazing teacher. If he is teaching your quarter, 100% take him. He loves to develop relationships with his students and is available outside of class for any questions you may have. It is super important to do the WebAssign homeworks because they prepare you for tests and midterms and finals.
One of the greatest professors in the chemistry department. Weiss and his TAs made all of the concepts super clear. Weiss and his team really understand their students are really helpful when you ask for it. I only wish that I could have taken this class in person as opposed to online.
Easiest chem class at UCSC, and he even gave us 6 hours for our final which is on webassign. Explained concepts clearly and if you put minimal effort then an A is likely. Highly recommend and remember to do your webassign work
I'm not sure if he will be teaching ENVS 23 again but Peter Weiss is honestly probably my favorite professor so far. He genuinely cares about his students, gives great lectures, makes deadlines very clear, and is always willing to help. Truly 11/10 professor.
Chem 1A is hard but Peter Weiss makes it as great as he can. Lots of homework, but it's helpful for the exams. Quizzes are easy if you pay attention to lectures and put in the work for this class. Love this guy
Professor Weiss gave fun, engaging lectures. Beware, he has video lecture quizzes that you get 2 attempts on. His quizzes are timed, but you get 2 attempts for each question. The homework can be a bit difficult. Overall, he's a great professor that truly cares about his students.
Prof Weiss is really nice and funny, but his lecturing skills aren't the best. While his lectures were engaging, I had a hard time understanding the material. The homework and quizzes weren't that bad and it is easy to get an A if you put in the effort. I wasn't a big fan of Prof Weiss, but I do recommend him for others.
Sections are not mandatory. You really only need to watch his lectures, do the homework, and do well on the quizzes to pass this class. There is always a practice quiz that is similar to the actual quiz. No midterm just 6 quizzes and a final. Each quiz has 5 questions and you have an hour to finish. I think the homework was harder than the quiz.
The lectures are prerecorded and you need to answer 6 questions embedded in lecture. Theyre easy enough and make a solid fraction of the grade so dont ignore them. The material is well conveyed and the tests are open note so make sure to take good notes.
if you watch all the lectures, do the video quizzes, and do the homework, you'll be fine. All assignments/assessments were done on WebAssign, almost always 2 tries on test/quiz questions which was immensely helpful
Professor Weiss is amazing! His video lectures are so fun to watch and allow me to understand chemistry! This class was a lot of fun, homework due every two weeks with quizzes too. We also had quizzes based off the video lectures, but they werent too hard. Overall this class was fun and made chemistry less of a scary topic.
I can't say enough good things about this professor, he gave us two tries for each question on the biweekly quizzes, he gave us two weeks to finish the homework(typically 15 questions more or less), amazing detailed lectures, accessible outside of class, he drops your lowest quiz score. He's just the best! You'll get a good grade if you try.
Professor Weiss is definitely one of the better professors I've had so far. He really knows the content and can explain things well whenever you have questions. I wish I had taken his class on-site but I still enjoyed taking CHEM 1C remotely with him. His class is still challenging for sure but you can do well if you work hard enough.
Lectures ain't great and gives hw off of Webassign, quizzes and final are also in that system. Definitely study those. He's a caring dude and the content is difficult imo bc I worked from 0 haha
Peter was honestly one of my favorite professors at UCSC. His lectures were clear and the homework was very similar to the tests. His lectures were also pretty enjoyable!!
Based on the grading system and the amount of resources you can really tell he wants all his students to pass unlike some professors. You get lots of attempts on homework and two on tests and quizzes, so just do them and youll be able to get a good grade. Was able to learn without the serious stress like in other classes. 10/10 would recommend!!
weiss is hands down one of the best professors i've had. his lectures were great and he was good at answering questions. homework was on webassign which was annoying but that's not necessarily something that should be held against him.
The class was 100% online so I never met him but the class goals were clear. You have 2 attempts on lecture questions and 5 attempts on homework. Super sweet guy & offers feedback quickly. Chegg came through this quarter.
Such an amazing professor! His lectures are well planned, clearly explained, and really helpful. Easiest chem class I've taken. Would love to take another class taught by him. If you can, take chem taught by him!!
Great Professor! I took the class online with him over the summer, there's video lectures, chapter quizzes, and homework on webassign. All of which have ranging from 2 to 5 tries to ensure everyone does good. His pre recorded lectures were helpful and everyone is available to help you succeed in the class. Definitely recommend for Chem 1C.
Great guy and a really fun class. Goes out of his way to make the class enjoyable and engaging. Doesn't communicate the material very well. Doesn't prepare you well for exam questions. Test questions are fairly simple if you pay attention to the lecture. Video quiz questions are nearly impossible without Chegg. Buy Chegg for your grade being > 80%.
Weiss has his class formatted in a way that you could miss his lectures and still pass. Online lectures are long and can be a bit difficult to stay focused.
does not grade, gets everything automatically input with webassign. Lectures don't correlate w/ the webassign work at all, hw and tests were a guessing/cheating game. Does not prepare you at all for any of the actual graded work. Lectures are long but online so attendance not mandatory, in class lectures are interesting but not helpful.
Peter is a good guy but god this class sucks. Its too easy. Every homework & quiz question is available on chegg and he allows you to use the internet on tests. Everyone who had above an A cheated. Good guy but I feel so underprepared for the chem in my future. If you want an easy A, take his class, but dont expect a deep understanding of chemistry
He was a great teacher and very understanding. Was also easy to sleep through bc all the lectures were recorded and you were allowed to use notes and the internet during the online quizzes, hw, and final. Easy to get a good grade with him, but go to lecture if you want to actually understand the material and to be prepared for future classes.
Very passable, good teacher
Took this class for GE credits needed and did not disappoint. The content is interesting and flexible with your schedule making it accessible and low stress. There are a couple of quizzes, a discussion, and an assignment do every Sunday but most of what you need can be found in the short online lectures. Take it!
the lectures for this class were all done by a different professor but everything is open note and online and therefore very easy to do well. Peter himself doesn't do much but this class is def a good option for a GE and pretty interesting.
Take this course if you are interested in environmental studies. The async course has weekly lecture videos, quizzes, discussion posts, and water case study country assignments. There is a multiple-choice midterm and final based on the lecture info. A very straight-forward course.
Prof Weiss is great; nothing more and nothing less. He's a great guy who does his job well!
Good professor who cared about his students and their success.
Peter Weiss is the first professor whom I felt like he genuinely cared about his student's success and learning. He is very transparent with his grading and what will be on exams. Most of the grading is exams and completing ALEKS, which is not too difficult if you are on top of the material. It was seriously a pleasure to have taken his course!
Peter is the most understanding professor I've ever had. I can fully admit that the C+ I received was due to outside circumstances. His grading scale makes passing a lot less stressful and he's very understanding. Lectures have really cool demonstrations. Homework is worth the largest portion of your grade, so just be sure to complete the ALEKS pie
His class on air pollution was interesting and understandable. Class isn't mandatory but I would say attend them either way because mostly all the worksheet answers are given throughout the lecture, and he provides well-explicit steps to solve the projects. He's helpful when you require assistance, and I easily made friends in this class.
There is homework most days of the week but it's easy to manage if you stay on top of it. He gives fun lectures and explains the material very clearly. Exams get a notecard cheat sheet and plenty of provided resources.
Good lectures that prepares you for the tests
Easy A, asynchronous. Has some interesting topics, but the lectures are from a previous professor (boring). About one discussion post a week, open note midterm and final. There were also "Mandatory discussion section Zoom meetings" for extra credit. If you are looking to focus on major courses and just need an easy class, take this.
Peter is an amazing professor. He explains concepts very well, and never tries to trick you on his exams. No midterm, just four quizzes throughout the quarter, and he drops the lowest score. Class is really straightforward, and very easy to understand.
This class was easy; there were no midterms. Only four quizzes and a Final, he provided a lot of practice problems for the quizzes, so as long as you studied, it was easy to pass them with A's. He also let us use an index card for the quizzes. Attendance for discussion sections was mandatory, and there was also ALEKS hw, but it was manageable.
Very clear grading system, 4 quizzes (lowest gets dropped) and 1 final. ALEKS also takes up a good chunk of your grade so if you stay on top of it and study enough there's no way you don't pass. Notecards available for all quizzes/the final. Great and kind professor, probably my favorite from the 3 series.
Tests were terrible: two midterms, one final. The class average for the midterms was below 70%. The test material does not match what we practice on ALEKS. Do not recommend.
this class made me crash out so bad. i don't know who lied and said chem 3c is the easiest in the gen chem series. it is definitely not. tests are weighted the most. do not take this class over the summer. final was two days after the second midterm with barely enough time to study. aleks and lectures unhelpful for preparing for exams.
He is AMAZING! The grading is pretty light, with weekly discussion posts, vocab, and quizzes. In the summer, optional Zoom attendance even counted for extra credit. Overall super easy course, if you are looking for an easy, low-stress GE, this is it!
He's honestly super great, practice tests and lecture example problems were exactly like actual midterms and final which is amazing. He's very clear in what he's teaching and he's easy to understand. Also super chill guy
Ok so I took this class over summer (5 week session) and it was not super fun. Tests were difficult. Most of the topics I would study wouldn't be on the test and I would end up being pretty stumped. Id say take the class if you just want to pass (if you want to not really try or studying a little bit) (which is what I did). Aleks did not help .
Works on problems w/ you when goes through his slides. First day of class did experiment in class + one a week since. All lectures posted on Canvas. Easily accessible in office hours or after class and willing to help. Small quiz every 2 weeks w/ final. ALEKS is 1000x more difficult than any quiz/in class and sucks. Overall, cool guy.
Professor Weiss is a great professor and teaches you everything you need to know for exams. Aleks can be very dumb sometimes, but personally I felt like quizzes are easy and barely needed to study. The class gives you all the tools in order to succeed, but the lectures can feel boring and could be more engaging. Otherwise, you're in good hands.
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!! he's an amazing professor and he's really understanding. His exams are exactly what he says: easy and straightforward. The practice exams are harder than the actual exam and students walk out literally telling him it was easy and he's glad. Everything is straightforward and his grading is always in a timely manner!
He is a great professor who cares about the subject he teaches. Try to sit in the front and be attentive. He tends to get tunnel vision and not call on people to ask questions in lecture so have some patience when you raise your hand. He is more than happy to talk to students after class and work with people to improve.
Very Chill Dude
He was amazing. He explains every topic clearly and provided many examples during lectures. He gave many practice quizzes and worksheets. Also there are no midterms, just quizzes that happen every two units. He provides a formula sheet and you get an index card as a cheat sheet. For the final you get two index cards.
Chill guy, always good vibes in class and high quality lectures. Quizzes were very reasonable difficulty and lowest gets dropped. Aleks is mad annoying though but definitely a good professor
Professor Weiss is AMAZING! I would take him for the rest of my chemistry courses if I could. He is super chill and understanding, and the class is very much structured for you to learn the material rather than just go in and get a grade :)
Great professor, lectures move quickly but you'll adjust to it. Do practice questions and you'll do fine on the quizzes. Definitely recommend.
He is very well respected, well known, and he loves to play his guitar and teach. However, if you have a learning disability/adhd/autism and you ask for your DRC accommodations, be prepared to either be called a literal idiot by him or having to FIGHT FOR YOUR DESERVED ACCOMMODATIONS.
